his week’s guest, Nathan Price, has just co-authored a newly published book from Harvard Press called The Age of Scientific Wellness: Why the Future of Medicine is Personalized, Predictive, Data-Rich, and in Your Hands. Nathan is the Chief Scientific Officer of Thorne HealthTech and has a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego. He has a number of other degrees as well which you can learn about by listening to the podcast. We talk about Scientific Wellness, some of the new health information available, new developments in Alzheimers and aging, and his varied path from UC San Diego to his present position at Thorne. Thorne itself has pivoted to focus primarily on healthy aging and how do we do that. That includes working with health care practitioners & doctors and online direct to customers, both of which gets their information and products faster and more easily into the hands of the people who need it. It was so interesting and there was so much valuable information about new things in the pipeline that will make it easier and faster for all of us to get test results and advice. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the show as much as I did. You can go to Thorne’s website, thorne.com, to learn more about what they’re doing and how you can access new developments and supplements in the field of aging.

01 Sep 2020 | How Good Is Your Balance? | 00:17:56
How Good is Your Balance? As we age our bodies get weaker and then our balance starts to get worse as well. Once that happens we have a tendency to take a fall. Falling is one of the main reasons that older (over 65) people end up in the emergency room and the hospital and that every 19 minutes an “older adult” in the U.S. dies from a fall. Scary isn’t it? This is also a huge financial burden on the U.S. Medicare system. It can also become a vicious cycle once people start taking falls - they get weaker and go down again. We all need to stop this cycle before we get caught in it. The podcast covers most of the many physical issues that can negatively affect our balance. There are diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, inner ear issues from calcium crystals moving around, medications that lower your blood pressure too much or just naturally having low blood pressure. It can even be something as simple as getting a new pair of bi-focal glasses. The important thing is to be aware of these issues and to always ask your doctor if your medications can affect your balance or interact with some other medication you already take. Then it’s important to keep up your fitness by doing things like yoga or tai chi and to also do strength exercises that are specifically designed to improve your balance. I go through 2 different balance exercises in detail at the end of the podcast so you don’t have any excuse to not start improving your balance now. As always, leave me a comment here or on my website and let me know if you have any other exercises you like to do to “stay in balance”…
15 Sep 2020 | Health & Wellness Coach Cheryl Borchardt | 00:47:26
Health & Wellness Coach Cheryl Borchardt My guest this week, Cheryl Borchardt, is a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach and National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach. She helps individuals calm bothersome symptoms associated with chronic disease and autoimmune conditions by helping them get their lifestyle and gut healthy. We talk about how her own personal journey to good health led her to become a health coach working with integrative and functional medicine physicians. Her specialty areas are dealing with chronic health and autoimmune conditions. Our discussion covers a lot of different issues that Cheryl has dealt with personally and with her clients. Food issues, meal making, and challenge diets; motivation that comes from a couple of little wins in feeling better; working with patients and their doctors to modify or stop medications. And of course, we talked about Covid and how it has changed some of the things she’s helping people with. We talk as well about how it hasn’t particularly affected her practice as she was already all online before Covid hit. Cheryl also talks about helping people who are over 40 and over 60 and the impact that self-care improvements can make in their lives. The way that just paying attention to what we’re doing and eating can stop the fatigue, help us lose the extra weight we’ve been carrying around, and/or adjusting their medications that don’t play well together. If you are interested in talking to Cheryl about your personal health you can contact her at https://www.gutcoachcheryl.com/ Watch this space next week to see my October coaching special for you to take advantage of and tell your friends and family about.

23 Sep 2023 | Celebrating Menopause Month: the Harmonious Relationship Between Cannabis and Sex | 00:25:37
To Celebrate Menopause Month starting Oct 1, I have a very special guest with a unique perspective on menopause, sex, hormones, and more. Joining us is Katie Enright, founder and CEO of Lavinia, a company that focuses on enhancing people's sex lives through the use of cannabis. Katie shares how she transitioned from studying theology and considering a life as a nun to becoming an advocate for sexual education and incorporating cannabis into her own recovery journey. Her company, Lavinia’s mission is to enhance peoples sex lives through cannabis and to normalize two historically taboo subjects (sex and cannabis). She explains how cannabis acts as a vasodilator, increasing blood flow, and how it can improve sexual experiences when used topically or ingested. Improving women’s sexual health before, during, and after menopause is very exciting (if you’ll pardon the pun) for all women going through the multi-year, multi-decade process of aging. While currently only available in California, Katie discusses the future potential for broader distribution and the benefits of cannabis in improving various aspects of our lives. Stay tuned to learn more about Katie's products and the exciting possibilities that lie ahead. If you live in California and are 21 or over you can legally purchase cannabis locally and/or order it from a list of sites on their website - www.ohlavinia.com

09 Nov 2020 | Getting Stronger As We Age | 00:56:08
Getting Stronger and Healthier As We Age My guest today is Joseph Oniwor. Joe is a pro arena football player turned transformation trainer who has been in the fitness industry for 28 years. His mission is to help women 48 years old and older to take back control over their bodies while they are dealing with the energy loss and weight gain that typically comes along with menopause. Listen in as we talk about what family and personal health issues brought him to become a health coach and to work with menopausal women in particular. I know from personal experience that we can be a bit moody and temperamental during that age. Joe and I also talked about how to keep your fitness and strength during Covid and exercising at home. He has some very helpful suggestions for how to set up a kind of gym in a small space inside your own home. Continuing, we talked about how people need to find a “why” for making healthy changes and choices in their lives. Switching to healthy foods, starting or continuing an exercise regime, while creating and maintaining a mindset that allows them to confidently take care of themselves first in their lives (one of my favorite topics). This podcast is one of my longer ones but I think you’ll find it full of good advice and information. Let me know what you think. If you’d like to get in contact with Joe I’ve added his website and other specific information about some of his programs and free information below. 22 Jul 2020 | Walking During Covid-19 | 00:17:27
WALKING FOR EXERCISE DURING A PANDEMIC Exercising anytime is important and it’s particularly important during a pandemic like we’re experiencing right now. We all need to support our immune systems to be able to fight off this disease and to be strong in case we actually end up getting it. Being over 50 makes us especially vulnerable so we need to do what we can beef up our immune system. Because so many of us are at home most of the time that means that we are sitting more than usual, on our computers or watching something on our big screens. We are not socializing as much and we probably are just wearing our sweats and shorts (I know I am). It’s very easy to gain weight because we can’t go to the gym, exercise classes, and/or to the track at the local high school. That’s why it’s important to go out and walk. I walk around my neighborhood every day and I’m lucky because it’s mostly all flat so it’s easy. If you can’t walk in your neighborhood then go some place close where you can walk. If you’re in good shape and you have some hills where you live you should try walking on some of the hills as it’s very good exercise to do. Start with short amounts of time and build up as you it gets easier to do. This podcast goes through the long list of benefits you can get from walking regularly. Things like helping to ward off varicose veins, increased creative thinking, being in a better mood, keeping your weight in check, and a reduced risk of developing heart failure. Listen to it today (it’s not that long) and you’ll agree that with all of these benefits it’s worth putting on your walking shoes (that’s all you need) and getting outside every day. If you are feeling sad, lonely, or out of balance because of the pandemic and/or how you have been affected by it please reach out to me as I am offering a free coaching session to anyone who needs some support during this time; there are no strings attached and no sales pitches. You can contact me at my Healthy Tips After 50 website or Facebook Page or you can send me a DM directly on Facebook.

23 Nov 2020 | The Naturopathic Path to Health | 00:45:22
The Naturopathic Path to Health My podcast guest this week is Dr. Cris Azzola, ND. Dr. Cris is a licensed naturopathic doctor in San Francisco, CA, and is a descendant from a long line of physicians who believed in balancing conventional medicine with natural healing techniques. From early childhood, she was inspired by her family’s dedication to helping others and became curious about the natural remedies her family used to stay healthy, always wondering “how grandma’s stuff worked”. That’s why she decided to go the naturopathic route instead of the traditional MD route. Cris specializes in helping people prevent and treat chronic conditions, including stress and burnout, and re-optimize their health. We had a great conversation about the different types of conditions and complaints that she has been treating during Covid and before. I really liked the way that she supports each person she sees as the unique person they are tries to make their healing journey as engaging as possible. Another area we talked about was food and how important healthy food is to keeping us strong. She suggested looking at the book The World’s Healthiest Foods by George Mateljan if anyone is specifically interested in learning more about different foods. Per Cris’ recommendation, the book provides a great index and helps us identify foods high in specific nutrients and other details. The book can be bought on Amazon here or on his website at http://www.whfoods.com/ If you want to get in touch with Cris for more information about her naturopathic practice you can go to her website at www.DrAzzola.com or email her directly at Contact@DrAzzola.com
25 Jan 2021 | Mushrooms As Food and Medicine | 01:02:28
Mushrooms as Food and Medicine Today’s guest is Jeff Chilton, the owner of Nammex (North American Medicinal Mushroom Extracts). Jeff’s interest in mushrooms started when he was a student at the University of Washington in the late 1960’s. He became a mushroom grower in 1973 and in 1989 he founded his company Nammex which raises organically certified mushrooms for the Nutritional Supplement industry. We had a very interesting (and long) conversation which I’m sure you’ll enjoy if you like to eat mushrooms and/or take mushroom supplements. I know that I sure enjoyed it and I learned a lot from it as well. It’s always so valuable to be able to talk to an “expert” and Jeff is definitely an expert on everything mushroom. He explained how and why mushrooms are not a vegetable nor a plant - they are in between in what Jeff calls "their own kingdom". I also learned why I’ve had allergic reactions to some mushroom supplements I’ve tried and what to look for when I go shopping for one again. We also talked about the many different kinds of mushrooms both to eat and to supplement with. Jeff explained how mushrooms are grown, their nutritional values, and how best to cook them. It really was a fascinating hour and will be well worth your time to listen to it all the way to the end. To contact Jeff or his company directly you can go to his website https://www.nammex.com/
02 Mar 2021 | Worse Than the Dirty Dozen | 00:13:30
Worse Than the Dirty Dozen Today’s show brings us up to date on one of the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) dirtiest food. They reported on the Department of Agriculture’s 2020 pesticide residue tests on fruits and vegetables and for the first time the DOA included raisins in their tests. When the EWG compared the raisin results with those on the Dirty Dozen list they found that it was worse than all of them and would rank #1 if it was included in the list - which it isn’t because it is considered to be a processed food. 99% of conventional raisins and 91% of organic raisins tested positive for two or more pesticides. The EWG’s recommendations were to eat organic raisins if you want or have to have raisins but otherwise try and eat prunes (especially organic prunes) instead. Go here to listen to my previous podcast on the EWG Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen - https://healthytipsafter50.com/buying-organic-food/ Go here to read the EWG’s full report on raisins - https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/raisins.php
16 Nov 2021 | What Song Makes You Dance? | 00:13:26
What Song Makes You Get Up and Dance? For me I love almost any kind of music and it makes me feel good to know that there are positive, physical benefits from listening (and dancing) to it. I talk about an NIH-funded music and health initiative. It’s so exciting to learn about some wonderful results they are getting from their research into Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and stroke recovery. There are also interesting updates related to the grieving process, using music to help be more productive, and learning how music affects the brain. Music can help people support and connect with others. It can help us to strengthen our own brains by learning and playing an instrument. It can also help you to remember where you parked your car or left your keys. All of these are in the podcast.
13 Jul 2021 | Mushroom Power | 00:08:15
Mushroom Power What do you think about eating mushrooms as a way to beat cancer? Sounds good to me. This podcast is about a few studies that looked at mushrooms and their connections to lower risks for premature death and cancers. One study’s finding said that people eating 18 grams of mushrooms per day - equal to 1 medium white mushroom - had a 45% lower risk of cancer compared to those who didn’t eat any mushrooms. Listen in to more information in this short podcast! let me know if you eat mushrooms in the comments below!

19 May 2020 | Living with Arthritis Through Exercise and Diet | 00:15:19
Manage, Improve, & Heal Arthritis Growing up I always thought that Arthritis was something you got when you were older and it didn’t go away. Now I’ve learned that you can actually not get it to start with and if you have it you can manage it, improve it, and actually cure it. This podcast gives you information about how exercise can help strengthen your muscles and your joints which will improve your arthritis, if you have it, and will also set you up to not develop it if you don’t. But you have to do the exercise consistently and the right way, that’s where your doctor or physical therapist comes in. Yoga and Tai Chi exercise have both been found to be very helpful in pain reduction and improvement in coordination, balance, and body awareness. The other part of that equation is your diet and the food you eat. It has been shown in multiple studies over the past 5 years that the Mediterranean Diet can ward off, improve, and/or heal both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The Mediterranean Diet is a very anti-inflammatory regime and arthritis is caused by inflammation so it makes sense that it can help your body to fight off the arthritis before you develop or heal it if you already have it. Here’s a link to my previous podcast on the Mediterranean Diet where I go into more detail than in this show. https://healthytipsafter50.com/mediterranean-diet/ I also mention the interview I had with my friend Louise Tyrrell. who is a yoga teacher and inspirational speaker based in Ireland. Louise is currently leading online yoga classes on her website https://louisetyrrell.com The interview show is at this link - https://healthytipsafter50.com/yoga-inspiration-grounding/ I hope you enjoy this podcast and both of the previous podcasts.

28 Apr 2020 | Benefits of Red Wine During a Pandemic | 00:11:52
A Glass of Wine Makes For a Healthy Life This podcast is all about the many benefits of drinking one glass of red wine each day. There are many studies which I talk about that show the positive benefits of red wine. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer behavior in your body as well of benefit in the fight against cardiovascular disease. I talk about studies that have shown it reduces the risk of diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, and stroke along with heart disease, obesity, and infectious diseases. It also provides food for beneficial gut bacteria that stop the creation of gut bacteria which is a cause of atherosclerosis. There are many other studies that I cover in this podcast related to colorectal cancer, stem cells, inflammation, aging, blood vessels, and blood clotting. Enough with the lists - listen to the podcast and get all of the details. But remember that this applies to 1 glass for women and 1-2 for men a day, more than that and you will lose the health benefits. So, enjoy and don’t overdo! You can listen to and comment on the podcast on my Facebook Page - Healthy Tips After 50 Page or at my website - Healthy Tips After 50
02 Nov 2020 | Coffee and Caffeine - Are they healthy for us? | 00:16:50
Coffee & Caffeine - Are They Healthy For Us? I read an article about coffee and the health benefits of it which aroused my curiosity and led to this week’s podcast subject - Coffee & Caffeine. I found quite a few recent studies that showed the health benefits of coffee and especially of caffeinated coffee. The only bad kind of coffee is very hot coffee - drinking that can increase your risk of developing esophageal cancer. Otherwise it can lower your risk for multiple kinds of cancer, there’s a list in the podcast and the relative amount in each. If you drink unfiltered coffee on a regular basis it can cause your cholesterol to rise. There have also been studies looking at the association of coffee and gallstones, with poor cognitive functioning, and with high blood pressure. Coffee is considered to be a food and at this point I would venture to say a health food. 19 Apr 2021 | Improving Memory and Focus | 00:10:10
Improving Memory & Focus Everyone, but especially those of us over 50, is trying to find out how to improve our memories and our focus. And there are a lot of people and places looking at that subject. I was interested to find 2 newsletters with articles about it on their front pages this month. One of them explained the 3 phases of memory - encoding, storage, and retrieval. The other newsletter gave an explanation of and suggestions about how to improve focus and concentration which results in better memory recall. As with so much else in life, it all works better to be calm, attentive to one thing at a time, and to add feeling to the memories as we create them. There are also some other specific suggestions for increasing your focus and improving your memory. I learned a lot from both of these articles and I’m sure you will too! Enjoy!
05 Dec 2020 | An MDMA Love Letter | 00:55:22
An MDMA Love Letter Charley Wininger is a psychotherapist in private practice, and the author of "Listening to Ecstasy: The Transformative Power of MDMA", a story of his life and marriage, that he calls An MDMA Love Letter. Licensed as a Psychoanalyst as well as a Mental Health Counselor, he specializes in relationships and communication skills, and has been treating couples and individuals in his NYC office for over 30 years. I asked Charley to come on HTA50 to talk about Aging and Ageism. Our discussion ranged to quite a few different subjects that were all related to aging - some of those subjects were opportunities to get more involved in life and learn new things, volunteering with organizations that are appreciative of extra help, and physical and mental changes that we all go through as we age. Charley has also been featured in The New York Times and Newsday (a NY area newspaper) as “The Love Doctor”. If you listen in you’ll find out what his experience has been as a couples and individuals therapist. It was an interesting and enjoyable conversation which I think you’ll also enjoy. Charley's new book Listening to Ecstasy: The Transformative Power of MDMA is on Amazon. If you want to watch the video of the interview it's available on YouTube or on my Healthy Tips After 50 website.
13 Sep 2021 | Integrative Medicine Conversation | 00:53:44
Integrative Medicine Conversation This is one of my longer interviews because there was just so much to talk about and we really only skimmed the surface of the whole subject. Dr. Hartman is originally from and currently lives in Virginia where he is one of the rare Integrative Medicine doctors. Dr. Hartman became interested in this area of medicine because of his first adopted daughter who had Cerebral Palsy. His daughter's health struggles forced him to confront an uncomfortable realization: Our current healthcare system doesn't have all of the answers. His wife, however, refused to give up hope. She ultimately pointed him to functional medicine. His daughter & other two kids began to thrive. After years in family practice, he felt called to make a dramatic shift. In 2016 Dr. Hartman founded Richmond Integrative and Functional Medicine where he helps patients identify leverage points in key areas of their lifestyle & health that harness their body's remarkable power to heal and begin living the vibrant life they deserve. He has become the ‘go to’ doctor for difficult and hard cases in central Virginia. 09 Jun 2023 | Built Lean with Marc Perry | 00:33:21
Marc Perry started out with a normal weight of 165 lbs. After working long hours as a financial analyst mostly while sitting in his chair he realized that his weight had gone up to 200 lbs. It was at that moment that he saw that he had to make a change in his lifestyle. Marc started working out more often and created an efficient eating plan - that’s when the pounds came off. Next he helped his brother do the same, then he created a blog to share his story and his transformative plan. That was 15 years ago and the rest, as they say, is history. In the podcast we talked a lot about how he works with “busy professional men” who want to shift their lives and transform their bodies. One of the amazing things is that they only work with their clients for the 12 weeks of the program, that’s all that’s needed for them to change their clients’ lives for the rest of their lives. If you want to know more about this bold way of working together you can listen to the podcast and then go to Marc’s website BuiltLean.com to find out more, get his Free Guide, and connect with him.

Inside-Out Thinking: An Interview with Clesia Mendes Clesia Mendes is a Speaker and Mindset Coach who has over 25 years of experience in the personal development world. She loves traveling and teaching a new paradigm of psychology that, in her words, “has been discreetly emanating throughout the world”. I had invited Clesia to come on the podcast as a part of my continuing brain series of podcasts and because I felt that she could help me and all of you to better deal with the uncertainty and upheaval that we are all living in right now. Covid-19 is creating a lot of stress and anxiety around our health and the health of the world. There are also protests, anger, and uncertainty in reaction to the murders of George Floyd and other men of color by the police over the past few months (and years). Clesia and I talk a lot about these stressful issues as well as about the many levels of human reaction to them. Then we go down a level to explore the Inside-Out psychology, how it changes our relationship to ourselves and how we live in the world around us. As a Transformational Coach, Clesiia is dealing with these issues on both a personal and a professional level. She tells us about what brought her to the Inside-Out philosophy and she explains the impact that it has had on her life and for many others who have heard her talks on the Principles. 12 Oct 2020 | Kari Klein - Changing Her Message and Her Vocation | 00:46:11
Kari Klein - Changing Her Message and Her Vocation My guest on this week’s podcast is Kari Klein. Kari was a chiropractor for 16 years before she decided that she wanted to work with people from a more whole body/mind point of view and not just specific aches and pains. To help people to live from a deeper sense of well being. Some of the areas we talked about included looking at health & wellness as encompassing not just physical and mental health but also how mindset and inner wisdom are basic integral parts of our lives. Kari saw that a lot of her patients were exhausted from trying to fix specific aches and pains instead of looking at their body and mind as one whole entity that needed to exist in balance which would bring them better overall health. We continued our discussion talking about how we all need to have more curiosity about everything in life including our health, wellness, and how we look at ourselves and the world. This had led her to spend a year studying cellular biology and see that each cell is like a universe in and of itself. Be sure to listen to that part of the interview at minute 30 of the podcast. Overall, it was a very interesting and enlightening conversation and I hope that you all enjoy it. The best place to contact Kari is on her Facebook profile at https://www.facebook.com/thislifekariklein.
16 Feb 2021 | Maintaining Your Balance | 00:12:37
Maintaining Your Balance This podcast is about keeping your balance physically, not emotionally, better known as not falling and hurting yourself. I have a lot of experience with falling, not purposefully, and usually with some resulting bumps, bruises, and once a broken clavicle. There are a lot of reasons that people take falls and I talk about most of them. Things like losing muscle mass from aging, medications like anti-depressants and antihistamines, some cognitive disorders like Alzheimers and dementia. Arthritis and osteoarthritis and low levels of Vitamin D can all cause falls to happen. There are a few others that I talk about as well. Then there are a number of exercise programs (like yoga & pilates) I suggest as well as what not to wear, do, or consume. My last suggestion is to not only think about your own life but to watch for these issues in the lives of family members and friends and help them to do proactive self-care to ward off falls and the resulting issues that can impact their lives. I hope this helps keep this in everyone’s consciousness as we get older and our parents get older because one fall can drastically alter a person’s life and the lives of those around them.
05 Apr 2021 | What is Calorie Density? | 00:10:37
What is Calorie Density? Have you heard of calorie density before? I hadn’t and I was surprised as I’ve been a student of healthy food and diets for over 30 years. I was especially surprised to learn that it is one of the main reasons that we overeat. Calorie density is also known as energy density (hadn’t heard of that either) and is a measure of the calorie content of food relative to its weight or volume. The usual measure is the number of calories per 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of food. Fruits and vegetables are examples of low calorie dense foods. They are also examples of foods that can fill up your plate at the same time as providing lower calorie totals. Another interesting fact is that low calorie dense foods are not necessarily low in carbohydrates so you can end up eating healthier foods with fewer calories leading to weight loss. A perfect trifecta! I quote from the Nutrition Health Newsletter which is published by CSPI, a non-profit who has been “America’s Science-Based Food and Health Watchdog for Nearly 50 Years. 09 Jun 2020 | Food and the Brain - How They Impact Each Other | 00:18:28
Food and the Brain - How They Impact Each Other In putting this podcast together I learned so much about how food can affect our brains as well as how our brains control and influence satiety, overeating, and obesity. I found so many different kinds of studies dealing with food and our brain that I couldn’t even include them all. Colorful fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, whole grains, avocados, oily fish, coffee, and green tea are so important to maintaining our brain health. Eating them is linked to better memory, cognition, and a lower risk of Alzheimers, heart disease, and strokes. Obese people have been found to have similar brain activity patterns to people who abuse alcohol and drugs. It isn’t just a matter of not having any self-control. There is research trying to see if the same treatments for opioid addiction can be used for food addiction and obesity. Another study is using “cognitive behavioral therapy” to help adolescents learn how to control their cravings for certain foods that are not good for them. It’s helping them to lose weight and improve their health. Overall the Mediterranean Diet ticks off all of the foods that the studies have shown to be healthy and health maintaining - especially as we age! We can get away with eating a bad diet when we are young because our bodies are so much better at cleaning out the bad stuff. As we get older our bodies slow down and can’t clear junk out as easily. They need more of the good stuff to feed our health and our brains. That’s where the Mediterranean Diet comes into play. It has all of the fruits, vegetables, grains, coffee, tea, and red wine that will make us happier and healthier because we will feel better. Check the podcast out and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did in making it. How healthy is your diet?? Comment below.

17 Feb 2020 | New Nutrition Label | 00:19:41
Should You Care About the New Nutrition Label? This is the first update since 2006 of the Nutrition Label on food products. You may have already seen companies using this new label. Most of the information is the same but there are some important changes. Added Sugars are broken out from the Total Sugars, they took out Vitamin A & Vitamin C Daily Values and replaced them with Vitamin D and Potassium, and most importantly they enlarged and bolded the print for serving size and Calories. Another change only shows Daily Value percentages for a 2000 calorie per day diet (dropped the 2500 listing). Overall it is a better label with more important nutrition information than the previous label. Hurrah! Be sure to check out my other podcasts and blogs at the Healthy Tips After 50 website.

02 Jul 2019 | Hearing Loss, Dementia & Alzheimers | 00:19:43
Hearing Loss, Dementia, & Alzheimers - Are They Connected? According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a part of the US Government's National Institutes of Health (NIH), they are connected. There are numerous studies in PubMed showing that people who have hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia of any kind than those who have no hearing impairment. People with hearing loss who don't get some kind of "intervention" such as a hearing aid or implant tend to have more brain shrinkage which also correlates with cognitive decline. Listen to this podcast to learn more about the causes of hearing loss, getting your hearing tested, how to deal with hearing loss, and how to communicate with others who have a hearing loss. 01 Dec 2020 | Get Some Exercise Everyday | 00:12:34
Get Some Exercise Everyday! Today’s podcast is all about exercise and how important it is (or should be) in our lives. Especially with all of us limited to exercising outside or in our house/apartment (at least that’s how it is here in California). Exercise is so, so important to our health, under regular circumstances! It’s how we keep our hearts, lungs, muscles, brains, … working at their best. Today that translates into having a better chance of surviving COVID if we get it. But it also means that we will live longer to spend more time with loved ones. You can find groups, classes, workouts, equipment, etc., online and on TV/cable. There are books, magazines, and social media filled with information and teachers. You can do yoga, zumba, tai chi, and every other kind of exercise - so go out and do it, now! I do walking, floor exercises, and weights. Let me know in the comments what kind of exercise you like and actually are doing these days.
14 Dec 2022 | Healthy Skeptic Revisited | 00:49:36
This week's episode is a repeat from Fall of 2021 and I'm repeating it because this is a good time to remind people of how to eat well, stay healthy, and not gain weight during the holidays. I wish everyone happy & healthy holidays and I will return with a new podcast interview after the New Year (or maybe I'll do one next week all by myself). My interview guest is Robert Davis, Ph.D., also known as The Healthy Skeptic. Robert is an award-winning journalist whose latest book is “Supersized Lies”, How myths about weight loss are keeping us fat - and the truth about what really works. We had a very interesting conversation about dieting, food, and individual health and how trying to follow the many diet plans out in the media can be confusing and in the long run a waste of our time and money. This podcast is one of the most valuable you can listen to, especially if you have bought too many diet books and still not found a a diet that works for you. Robert’s website is https://www.healthyskeptic.com where you can check out his videos and books.

22 Feb 2021 | Vitamin D and Cancer | 00:11:45
Vitamin D and Cancer 2-3 years ago there were a couple of research studies published called the VITAL study which looked at the the affect of Vitamin D and Omega-3’s on almost 26,000 men and women over 50. All were free from cancer and cardiovascular disease at the start of the study which ran from 2011 until the end of 2017. The men and women in the study were randomly assigned to different groups - Omega-3 + Vitamin D, Omega-3, Vitamin D, and placebos. There were some interesting Vitamin D related results in the original study’s analysis that showed a small difference in the Vitamin D group having to do with metastatic and fatal cancers. A group went back last year to do a secondary analysis on that same group of Vitamin D vs placebo participants. What they found was a significant difference between the Vitamin D and placebo in the normal BMI (Body Mass Index) group but not so much in the overweight group. Makes me think that staying at a healthy weight and taking Vitamin D is a pretty good way to increase your odds of not developing metastatic and fatal cancer. Listen in to learn more…

16 Mar 2020 | Clear Thinking? | 00:23:31
Spend Less Time Worrying & More Time Doing! Spending time worrying about things that happened in the past or may happen in the future is like throwing that time away. You can’t change the past and you can’t create the future until you get there. We should live our lives in the present - we can only influence the future once it has becomes the present. Information from the Massachusetts General Hospital Mind, Mood, and Memory Newsletter suggests that we set up time periods during the day/evening to spend worrying. Scheduling it will make it more manageable and lower the amount of time that we spend pondering and worrying. Spending a lot of your day worrying about anything takes up room in your brain leaving less for your memory, thinking, and doing. They suggest developing more mindfulness through meditation, playing an instrument, yoga, and/or physical activities (e.g. running, tai chi). It’s really much more of an issue than any of us thought and we need to remember to breathe and relax while dealing with the COVID-19 virus because it’s easier to get sick if we’re stressed out about it all. Stay healthy and well as best as you can until it’s over. Think of it as using and developing a muscle that will serve you well going forward in all areas of your life. What do you think? Leave me a comment at my website Healthy Tips After 50.

14 Sep 2024 | More on Hearing and Hearing Aids | 00:47:26
In this podcast episode I spoke with Dana Helmink, the Senior Director of Audiological Development for Widex, about the importance of hearing health and advancements in hearing aid technology. Dana shares her extensive background in audiology and her passion for improving hearing solutions, emphasizing that hearing loss is no longer an issue only for the elderly but is increasingly being recognized and addressed in younger populations. We discussed the importance of early detection and intervention, as well as the impact of untreated hearing loss on cognitive decline, referencing significant studies like the Achieve Study from Johns Hopkins which highlights the potential benefits of using hearing aids to stop or slow down cognitive decline.
Dana introduces the latest product from Widex, the Smart-Ric, which features innovative design improvements aimed at enhancing sound quality, comfort, and user convenience. The conversation underscores the importance of seeking professional hearing assessments and considering hearing aids as a proactive measure for maintaining quality of life and cognitive health. Dana and I are big supporters for increased awareness and accessibility of hearing health care and encourage listeners to contact their doctors to get their hearing checked. _____________________ This special offer is still available. 23 Dec 2019 | Mindfulness Meditation for Anxious Memories | 00:16:39
Meditation for Calming Fearful Memories Volunteers trained in Mindfulness Meditation were able to break their "anxiety habit" caused by fearful memories. In this study the researchers used "safety memories" to help the participants in conjunction with the mindfulness meditation to do this. They also learned through mindfulness how to stop judging their own thoughts. Overall the meditation group did better than the control group who used exercise based stress management. Meditation classes are available in many community centers, spiritual/buddhist communities, senior centers, YMCA's, etc. You can easily find one near you. There's a short "holiday" tip having to do with wrapping gifts and creating expectations. Don't disappoint the person you are gifting by wrapping your gift "inappropriately". 20 Oct 2020 | Cruciferous Vegetables and Fibre - How Much to Eat? | 00:16:27
Cruciferous Vegetables and Fibre - How Much to Eat? Results from 2 studies in the UK both dealing with the impact of vegetables and/or fruit in the diet. The first shows the relation between higher amounts of cruciferous vegetables in one’s diet and a lower rate of abdominal aorta calcification. In the study a group of women over 70 years old eating 1/4 cup or more of cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, or cauliflower were 46% less likely to have aortic calcification. And having aortic calcification has been shown to make it more likely that you would have a heart attack or stroke. The second study questions how much of an impact some of the common dietary advice actually has on one’s health and specifically your gut. Things like eat five-a-day fruits & vegetables or even what five we should pick to eat. Most of this study had to do with the colon and specifically the lining of the colon. There are a few medical terms that were included - terms like terminal ileum (where the small intestine intersects with the large intestine) and proximal colon (first and middle areas of the colon). The wrap-up advice that the study writers include is that at this point in time we should all follow a Mediterranean diet plus coffee. Sounds like good and yummy advice to follow!

30 Jun 2020 | Memory Loss Misconceptions | 00:14:21
Memory Loss Misconceptions There are a lot of things that many of us think of as truths around our memory and our brains. This podcast covers some of them. The first and most important one is that our memories are accurate. That is absolutely not correct! Not only are our memories not accurate, they change every time we bring them up out of our brains. That explains, for instance, why you and your spouse never seem to agree on something you both saw, experienced, or participated in. It also explains why multiple “eye witnesses” tell different versions of the same event. Just because you think you saw it remember that you may be wrong! Another one that gets a lot of play on TV and in books and movies is repressed childhood memories. Turns out there is no such thing. People who had early trauma experiences in their lives are not likely to either repress it and/or forget it. Interesting, huh? I talk a lot about Alzheimer’s and its connection with memories. But the truth is that loss of memory is not the first sign of Alzheimer’s. It’s actually the breakdown of judgement and decision-making as well as anxiety, irritability, or other personality changes. So watch for those in your loved ones, not memory loss. There are some more examples I talk about and then I throw in my favorite diet to help you with any memory and/or brain issues - The Mediterranean Diet. There are just more and more studies showing how valuable it can be for so many areas of your health. The fact that you can have a glass of red wine each day as a part of the diet just seals the deal as far as I’m concerned. Here are some Mediterranean Diet books that I really like if you’re looking for one. *** Mediterranean Diet Recipes by America’s Test Kitchen https://healthytipsafter50.com/Test-kitchen-Med-Diet ***Mediterranean Method by Stephen Masley https://healthytipsafter50.com/Med-Diet-Masley
14 Dec 2021 | What is this Heart Test for? | 00:11:18

23 Sep 2020 | Reducing Food Loss and Food Waste | 00:15:41
Reducing Food Loss and Food Waste We human beings produce a lot of food waste and loss. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is observing their first International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on September 29. It will be an online event. To learn more go to this link: http://www.fao.org/platform-food-loss-waste/events/detail/en/c/1269190/ The FAO and the USDA have both committed their organizations to cutting in half the current amount of food waste and loss by 2030. This is a very aggressive goal but it’s something that needs to be done to help slow down climate change. In the podcast I explain how the FAO has created 2 new metrics which will be used by the FAO and USDA for measuring food loss and food waste going forward. The current level of food waste and food loss produces 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gas that goes up into the earth’s atmosphere which comes out of the landfills from the rotting food. The FAO is intent on increasing the efficiency in the way food is produced, distributed, and consumed. In January 2020 the USDA released a report identifying most of the supply chain factors leading to 30-40% of our food supply being wasted. Among these are supermarkets and restaurants not wanting to buy food in that doesn’t meet their quality and appearance requirements. I understand but I think we (including me) are going to have to get over this. Lastly I go through quite a few ways that we as consumers can lower our own levels of food loss and waste. They aren’t hard to do and they make a lot of sense. I hope they help you to contribute to bringing this global crisis under control. On a totally different subject, at the end of the podcast I let everyone know that as part of my celebration of the fall season I am giving away free coaching sessions to the first 15 people who email me at susan@susanrosin.com mentioning the podcast and the offer and telling me what they are doing to help lower their food waste. I look forward to connecting with you soon.

Charles finds joy in helping patients transform their appearance and boost their confidence. He received training from three royal colleges of surgeons in the United Kingdom and developed hhis passion for reconstructive surgery while working with children born with cleft problems. Below are the two key takeaways from my conversation with Charles: 1. Embrace Failure and Rewrite Your Story: The podcast emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and accepting failure, both in our personal and professional lives. By being open and vulnerable, we can rewrite our life's chapters and redefine failure as an opportunity for growth and learning. 2. 17 Nov 2020 | Reminder to Take Care of Your Hearing | 00:21:22
Reminder to Take Care of Your Hearing This week’s show is a rebroadcast of one from the middle of 2019. I’m running it again because hearing and hearing loss is such an important subject, especially during this pandemic. We are all staying close to home and even more so for us older people. We are the ones who are most at risk for hearing loss and not getting it checked regularly and/or taken care of can make us more vulnerable to brain issues. There are many studies showing that people with hearing loss who don’t get some kind of “intervention” such as a hearing aid or implant tend to have increased brain shrinkage and are more likely to develop dementia. Hearing loss can be caused by ear wax or fluid buildup in the ear, by a punctured ear drum, various health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, etc., and heredity / genetics. The long term effects of hearing loss can be self-isolation, faster decline of cognitive abilities, and as I said previously dementia. Any one of those items should be enough of a reason to get your hearing checked on a regular basis or when you feel like you’re not hearing as well as you used to. The latter is what got me to go and I’ve been wearing a hearing aid for more than 3 years now - it made a big difference in my life and it could in yours as well. For more information go to my website to read my blogpost Hearing Loss for Older Adults https://healthytipsafter50.com/hearing-loss-older-adults/

28 Sep 2020 | How Relaxation Improves Your Health | 00:51:51
How Relaxation Makes You Healthier My guest today is Jeff Kelton, PhD, self-described incessant wanderer and author of An Insider’s Guide to the Art of Deep Relaxation. We had a very good conversation about his background and grounding as a clinical psychologist, consultant, and nowTransformation Coach. Jeff also created his own process where he guides “leaders, truth seekers, and creatives to find and use their “Inner GPS” to navigate their journey in life”. The process is called GlobalWalkabouts and he has had much success in helping people to gain a connection to self that “provides greater peace and inner knowing of what’s next in their lives”. In our discussion Jeff shares what he has learned about himself and about serving others and particularly about the value of deep relaxation in the cultivation of Whole Body Presence. Relaxation is also a way that we can manage stress and any discomforts of daily living that people (particularly those of us over 50) are feeling. He has a Facebook Group that he invited all of you to join (I’m already a member) to discover more about the experience of truly relaxing. The group is called Art of Deep Relaxation and the link is https://www.facebook.com/groups/1640456862773196 Jeff’s book is available on Amazon (“An Insider’s Guide to the Art of Deep Relaxation” https://www.amazon.com/dp/1086230140/ but he offered to send a free PDF copy to anyone who sends an email referencing this podcast and requesting the PDF. 03 Feb 2020 | Are You Going Gray? | 00:24:08
Curious About Gray Hair? Hair turns gray when the melanocyte cells stop being able to produce pigment called melanin. Interestingly the hair doesn’t actually turn gray - it’s white because it has no pigment. It just looks gray next to the hairs with color. Men get more gray hair than women and Caucasians get more than people of Asian and African descent. Stress probably could make you go gray faster due to inflammation and free-radicals which affect the level of melanin. Smoking has been linked to premature graying because it also affects the melanin levels. Lastly, supplements aren’t of any value at this point to stop the graying of your hair. For next week's show I'll have an interview with a health coach to talk about diet and healthy eating. Be sure to tune in and pick up some "healthy tips". As always check out my Healthy Tips After 50 website for more podcasts and some suggestions on products to support your good health.
03 May 2022 | An Energetic Chiropractor? | 00:40:26

Her goal is to help people feel better and learn how to take care of their unique bodies. She blends Reiki, energetic breath work with manual therapy and exercises to create an introspective mind-body-spirit experience. We became quick friends when Zoom and/or we were having sound issues and we were both able to see the humor in our situation. After we got that taken care of we found that we shared a similar view that health involves a lot more than just your “numbers”. I’m sure you will enjoy listening to her refreshing view on her role as a chiropractor. If you’d like to learn more go to her website bodyinbalanceny.com

30 Nov 2021 | Fighting Inflammation | 00:09:45
Fighting Inflammation Today’s show tries to sort through inflammation and the different kinds of inflammation - the kind that helps you heal, the kind that creates disease, and the kind that turns your body against itself. I talk about inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods. And I also talk about how chronic stress can create inflammation and disease all by itself. It’s pretty straight-forward in a kind of round-about way so hang in there to the end. And for anyone who is feeling particularly stressed I suggested that you get in touch and we can have a conversation about it. If you’re interested contact me at susan@healthytipsafter50.com and put Conversation in the subject.

My guest today is David Greenwalt, a certified health coach, who has been coaching people for over 30 years. His interest in health & fitness started when he was 10 years old and he was determined to win the President’s Physical Fitness Award - which he did 2 years in a row. He became a police officer and owned a gym at the same time. From there he became a police fitness trainer and started a supplement company. That company grew to 45 employees and $7 million in revenue. Then the internet happened and he found that he could have a dialogue with his customers which led him to writing a book about getting healthy and losing weight. His book is called The Leanness Lifestyle and he’s created a program which helps people to implement the healthy lifestyles in his book. The program is called Leanness Lifestyle University and it has coaches, education, motivation, support, nutrition, exercise, and everything else you need to be successful. Talking Toxins With Dr. Cris This show marks the return of Dr. Cris Azzola, a licensed naturopath in San Francisco. Cris is going to come on the show on a regular basis to talk about different topics. We thought that talking about toxins and toxicity would be relevant after last year’s wild fires in so many parts of the US and the world, Covid-19, and the chance of more wildfires starting in the spring again. We also talked about environmental toxins and how our body does or doesn’t deal with those. Cris talked about the different kinds of toxins, how our bodies deal with and clear toxins as well as how our bodies can get overloaded and overwhelmed (like during the fires). She also gave us some specifics about body organs and systems (like the hormonal system). We talked about how to help clear toxins, how some supplements interact with each other which can cause toxic reactions, and be careful about self-prescribing to take clear toxins out of your body. Cris did a nice job summarizing our discussion and best take-aways from our conversation. You can also find an informative (quick read) by Cris on Medium that’s called Detoxing After the 2020 Wildfires, you can read it here on Medium. 24 Feb 2022 | Self-Care for Heart Health | 00:07:10
Self-Care for Heart Health A study published in the journal Health Psychology that I read about was the spark for this podcast. The study had found a connection between self-care and self-compassion with heart health. More self-care & compassion created less plaque buildup on their heart’s carotid artery walls - a major risk for developing cardiovascular disease. The results confirmed that practicing better self-care was good for your heart irrespective of other heart related issues which I talk about in the short podcast. It also identified 3 main obstacles to doing self-care which I also talk about. Listen in and learn a lot! I also suggested that if any of you want to connect with me to learn how I changed my life by learning to practice self-care & compassion for myself you can reach out via email at susan@healthytipsafter50.com or on FB Messenger, Susan E Rosin. Be sure to put self-care in the subject line and I will know to reply quickly.

Good Posture for Strong Muscles Posture-related muscle weakness and rigidity can develop as you get older. Poor posture can affect your balance, strength, and flexibility and lead to chronic pain. There are many exercises that can help to improve your posture. Not surprisingly yoga is good for improving your posture, it seems to be good for everything! Tai Chi is also good for you. You want to strengthen your upper body, arms, back, and abdomen to help hold your torso erect. Get in the habit of checking your posture at all times, no matter what you’re doing, but especially when you are eating, at the computer, driving, standing in a line to checkout or buy something. Check your posture at various times of day until you find that you are doing it naturally and don’t need to adjust yourself anymore. You can leave me comments, questions, and topic suggestions on my webpage Healthy Tips After 50 or on my Facebook Page. I very much enjoy hearing from all of you. |
