15 Aug 2023Beyond Fairytales: The Cultural Impact of Disney EP 5100:25:55
Remember the first time you visited a Disney park? For my husband, Eric, that magical moment was not as enchanting as he'd imagined. Plunging into the heart of the Magic Kingdom, we found ourselves grappling with contrasting emotions and the looming question - is the Disney experience worth it for every family? Reflecting on my own fond childhood memories of Disney movies, we debate the pros and cons of the Disney world, taking into account the unique experiences of different families. As we navigate the spellbinding universe of Disney, we also uncover the less obvious impacts of Disney's cultural sway, particularly on our little ones. Join us as we step behind the magic and into the real world of Disney. In this episode, we discuss:
  • Reflection on personal experiences and varying opinions on Disney parks and their entertainment offerings.
  • Disney's cultural influence and the controversies surrounding it, with a focus on the changes in Disney's content and values.

07 Mar 2023Discussing Faith, Intimacy, Marriage, & Motherhood with Lindsey Maestas (PART 1) EP 2800:28:32
Buckle in because this conversation is so good we had to break it into two parts! If the title makes you nervous, these two episodes are for you. Faith, intimacy, marriage, and motherhood need to be talked about. The truth is the more the “secret” topics are discussed, the less taboo they become! I met Lindsey Maestas when I was actually on her podcast two years ago. Lindsey is the mom of two boys and wife to her husband, Jesse. She was blogging for seven years and providing marriage counseling before the Lord put it on her heart that she needed to launch a marriage course. Not only that, but Lindsey and her family packed up and moved from Albuquerque, NM, to Franklin, TN! I am excited to have Lindsey on the podcast to talk about the personal struggles many of us, especially women, face at some point in our lifetime. In this episode, we discuss:
  • How there is power in doing things that scare you.
  • What it looked like for Lindsey and her husband when they first started to take leaps of faith into business.
  • The effects of being taught that everything is disposable.
  • How we can facilitate better conversations surrounding the subject of intimacy and marriage.
  • Lindsey’s journey with postpartum depression and how medication changed her life for the better.

28 Feb 2023Training Your Kids on Inclusion & Acceptance with Laura Wifler EP 2701:03:44
Maybe you know what it’s like – your kid sees another kid at the store or in school that is different from them, and they don’t know how to act. They try to look at them out of the corner of their eye, maybe they giggle, or they loudly ask you what that thing is they sitting on and if they can get one. Sure, it’s embarrassing, but it’s in no way a reflection of your parenting. Rather than shushing your child and moving on like it never happened, you can take this as an opportunity to teach your children about inclusion. In this episode, we had a conversation with the infamous Laura Wifler, co-founder and executive director of Risen Motherhood. On top of producing content for Risen Motherhood, Laura is also an author of multiple books and creates resources for moms, kids, and families. Laura has a daughter with a rare genetic condition – in this episode, she shares some parenting tips to help teach children on how to react around others with disabilities, practice acceptance, and maybe even make a new friend! Enjoy! In this episode, we discuss:
  • How to train your kids to act around children with disabilities – and find similarities instead!
  • How inclusion has improved (or not improved) in church.
  • Moving from tolerance to acceptance.
  • How to have conversations about inclusion with your children with regard to the LGBTQ community.
  • Why it’s important to have friends who are different from us.
  • How Laura manages all the things in her life – because she is one busy lady!

Justin Earley, author of 3 books, Habits Of The Household, The Common Rule, and Made For People, joins Heather to share his insight on the life-changing difference of navigating life with a community vs without. Justin shares how friendships impact our overall mental health and how anxiety and depression are baked into loneliness.

We are the most physically connected and yet spiritually isolated people who have ever walked the planet. This is a spiritual crisis, not just social, because this endemic modern loneliness because it’s much more about your soul being hidden not just your body. It’s deadly. Loneliness kills us, body and soul, because it’s the opposite of what we were made for.”

Heather and Justin unpack the make or break issue of choosing to struggle WITH other people or in SOLIDARITY. Also, how friendship are a spiritual discipline and ultimately, you cannot walk with Jesus like you're supposed to walk with Him unless you are walking in community.

Justin leaves listeners with the encouragement that if you're feeling like your life is falling apart because you don't have the right friendships, you're right. God will meet you there and He will guide you out of that place of feeling "stuck". Justin provides tangible next steps to show up and speak up -- how to look at your week and identify 1 hour where you can show up for a friend.

In this episode:
Campbell Will, founder of Breath Body Therapy, joins Heather to share his story about researching the power of breathwork and how breathwork isn't a trend but rather it is the single most important function of the body and can either drive us towards health or towards disease.

Campbell shares that one of the best things you can do for your nervous system is to manage your state and thus how a managed state impacts parenting. Children will mirror the energy and attitude of parents.

Campbell unpacks the differences between mouth breathing vs nose breathing as well as the impact each has on the mind, body, and nervous system. He also touches on stress (embracing it rather than avoiding it), self regulation (teaching the nervous system how to be calm, the link between breathing and emotions, and the difference between "breathwork" and "breath retraining".

Campbell practically walks through good breathing patterns including how to properly take a deep breath.

Campbell's best takeaway is to use your breathing as a way to hit the reset button throughout the day. When you begin noticing mouth breathing, use the moment to course correct.

07 May 2024Healing From Lies, Toxic Relationships, Loss and Grief With CMT Top Female Country Artist, Stephanie Quayle EP 8200:48:56
In this episode:

Stephanie Quayle, acclaimed singer/songwriter and author of her forthcoming book, Why Do We Stay?joins Heather to talk about healing from lies, toxic relationships, loss, and grief.

When Stephanie lost her boyfriend in a plane crash, she faced intense grief and pain. Nothing compared, though, to the shock of discovering she had not been the only woman in his life. As her world unraveled around her, Stephanie realized that it had actually been unraveling from the start of their relationship—back when he promised her everything.

Stephanie says that her faith and forgiveness of not only the one who inflicted the pain but also of herself, has been the key to freedom and healing in her journey. Her personal journey of faith in Jesus has been one that she has held close and private, but now she is opening up about all God has done in her life. Stephanie was baptized by Pastor Chris Hodges of Church of the Highlands in January – on the 15th anniversary of her pain, which has now become her freedom.

Most of us have dealt with a toxic relationship – whether in friendship or romantically. Stephanie’s journey from heartbreak to healing will encourage and inspire you that in Christ, you can be empowered to walk in freedom, lay aside guilt and shame, practice self-care and rebuild your life.

03 Sep 2024The Hidden Crisis: Foster Care, Adoption, and Spiritual Resilience with Rebekah Weigel EP 8500:42:03
In this episode of the Healthy by Heather Brown podcast, Heather dives into the importance of mental, physical, and spiritual health in children with her guest, Rebekah Weigel, a producer, writer, and foster/adoptive parent. They discuss the movie 'Sound of Hope,' which focuses on a community-based adoption and foster care model inspired by real-life events from a small church in East Texas.

Heather and Rebekah explore the church's role in supporting children both locally and globally, addressing the various traumas that children encounter today. Rebekah shares her journey from psychology to filmmaking, the challenges and blessings of foster care, and the critical role of community support in encouraging adoptive families. Families who serve children through foster care and adoption are embodying the role of local missionaries and are meeting a great need. While more foster and adoptive families are needed, the church can also support these parents by offering prayer and care in the same way it would for international missionaries. We are called to be set apart, salt and light, in a dark world. In the marriage corner, this episode focuses on the balance of phone usage to foster better family relationships and concludes with actionable insights for parents on how to stay present in their children's lives.

Scripture verses highlighted in this episode include:James 1:27 “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained.”

2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me,  ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

07 Nov 2024Re-Listen: Training Your Kids on Inclusion & Acceptance with Laura Wifler EP 2701:02:34
