04 Dec 2017Empowering the Body and Mind ft. Tom Bilyeu || Episode 5000:50:41

One of our core philosophies is that humans are a system. We should think and approach the human system in a systematic, holistic manner in order to fully optimize our outputs. Tom Bilyeu, co-founder of Quest Nutrition, which was ranked #2 on the Inc 500 fastest growing companies, has his own experience realizing and pursuing this philosophy.

16 May 2018Pushing the Limits of the Body and Using Data Effectively ft. Tim Don || Episode 6800:47:21

A day before the Hawaii Ironman World Championship, Tim Don was hit by a vehicle, breaking his C2 vertebrae...an injury known as the hangman's fracture.

His only option for continuing his athletic career was to wear a halo, something he compares to a "medieval torture device". One look at it and you'd agree. 5 titanium screws were forced into his skull, severely limiting his movement so his neck could heal.

Six months later, he completed the 2018 Boston Marathon in under 2:50.

After such a traumatic injury, how did Tim manage to get back on his feet so quickly? We dive into the determined, strong-willed, and astute mindset of one of the world's greatest triathletes.

In this discussion, you'll discover:

  • The physical and nutritional interventions Tim followed in order to heal faster so he could get back to racing
  • The science component of triathlon training - How should athletes think about the growing set of data available to them?
  • As "amateur" sports gain in popularity with the culture shift of people wanting to become more healthy and active, how will that affect professional sports?

05 Feb 2020#142 - Summiting Metabolic Health: MHS 2020 Recap, Joe Rogan Goes Carnivore, & the Latest in Keto Science00:34:03

Fresh from the Metabolic Health Summit (#MHS2020), Geoffrey Woo and Dr. Latt Mansor sit down to chat about their experience interacting with the community and learning from all the fascinating presentations.

The Metabolic Health Summit was created to bring two worlds together: science and society. Over four immersive days, Geoff and Dr. Mansor were exposed to some of the most cutting edge research and applications of ketosis and metabolic therapies from leading physicians around the world. It's where research meets the real world.

In this episode of the H.V.M.N. Podcast, Geoff and Dr. Mansor discuss...

  • The presentations Dr. Mansor found especially interesting (Dr. John Newman, Dr. Mary Newport, & Dr. Benjamin Bikman to name a few), and sharing nuggets of the latest science he thought would be most valuable to our listeners.
  • Meeting the community! Many of the guests we've had on the podcast were at MHS in-person, along with fans of the podcast. Geoff & Dr. Mansor express their gratitude and joy interacting with everyone. The movement is truly growing!
  • Perhaps unsurprisingly, given recent popularity / controversy, one of the big topics underlying the summit was the #carnivore diet. Geoff and Dr. Mansor discuss the diet, shouting out Joe Rogan's instagram post on closing out #WorldCarnivoreMonth with truly amazing results on his physique and autoimmune condition.

We hope to see the event grow even more next year...look out for the H.V.M.N. Team at MHS 2021!

02 Oct 2020Free Fatty Friday #4 with Geoffrey Woo00:37:25

It’s Free Fatty Friday! Its been a couple weeks, and we missed you! We have a metabolism heavy line up of questions this week, especially with the publication of a new UCSF study that supposedly showed that “intermittent fasting” doesn’t work. Is that true? Let’s find out!

Q1: 2:32 Breakdown of UCSF fasting study. A Potential Downside of Intermittent Fasting?

Q2: 16:07 How long does it take to create cellular autophagy?

Q3: 21:37 If I am doing OMAD (keto or carnivore) what is the best strategy of timing the meal and workout? And could it be goal specific (e.g. gains, autophagy etc.) or type of workout specific (strength or cardio)?

Q4: 29:16 Can you use the G/K ratio such as 107/.6 to obtain an insulin level. Can a table be extrapolated?

16 Oct 2020Free Fatty Friday #5 with Geoffrey Woo00:47:01

We have a great lineup of questions this week. We cover topics ranging from lean mass changes in fasting; how glycogen, the storage form of carbohydrates, works in the body; various nuances and applications of the ketogenic diet for hypertrophy, and long-term longitudinal use; and target blood glucose fluctuations after a meal!

Free Fatty Friday (FFF) is a rapid-fire Q and A session with Geoffrey Woo, where he answers all your questions with a 5-minute cap on all answers.

Feel free to send your questions here: podcast@hvmn.com

Q1: 02:49 Very nice critique of the IF study. Any comments on the Lean Mass changes? Does it really make any sense?

Q2: 11:01 I have been wondering about carbs in liver. It is in the form of glycogen. Do we have digestive enzymes that can let us even access this? Is it available as a nutrient? When is a carb not a carb? When you can't use it.

Q3: 17:21 What causes insulin resistance? Why would the body resist something that is useful and why do some have no resistance and others do? I know the answer seems to be genetics and poor health but what is the mechanistic aspect of the resistance?

Q4: 22:25 For a ketone ester, are they the same ketones our body produces naturally or what? What happens if you chug the whole bottle?

Q5: 28:59 What's your view with alternate day fasting and hypertrophy training on feeding days?

Q6: 34:45 How much should blood glucose fluctuate after a meal?

Q7: 38:45 Can keto help build muscle? Is keto diet recommended for longterm use?

17 Dec 2017Evidence-Based Holistic Medicine ft. Dr. Felice Gersh || Episode 5201:18:49

Dr. Felice Gersh is a rare combination of a Board Certified OB/GYN who is also fellowship trained in Integrative Medicine. Her career has evolved over the years into one which utilizes the most cutting-edge and high-tech diagnostic testing, while incorporating science-based therapies – from the herbal to the surgical – to assist in the healing process.

"I don’t do things that aren’t tried and true and evidence-based. Part of the difference from me and the other natural paths, is the way I researched and learned cell biology and biochemistry…I take a lot of what they do and find the science to really explain it.”

“That’s what it takes, right? If we really want to change how health care is thought about, we have to target the people who are actively practicing medicine and educating the everyday patient how to be more self aware and armed about their own performance and health.”

11 Dec 2019Immediately Reduce Glucose Levels Even After Drinking 75g of Sugar · Research Roundup (Ketone Ester)00:12:26

It's the holiday season, and that often means big, happy meals with friends and family. That apple pie (that you may or may not give in) would be a glucose challenge for your body to handle.

What if you can preemptively improve your body's metabolic ability to handle that serving of pie with exogenous ketones? A pair of studies from University of British Columbia by Prof. Jonathan Little and Oxford Prof. Kieran Clarke researched how H.V.M.N. Ketone impacts glycemic response in both normal and obese populations.

Before participants consumed a 75g glucose drink, they consumed a ketone monoester. The results?

Reduced glycemic response and markers of insulin sensitivity.

In this episode of Research Roundup, Geoffrey Woo explains the studies' design, analyzes the specific results, and finally, what one could take away from the science and apply it to their personal life.

On a keto "cheat meal" day, could you perhaps reduce the negative effects a carb-heavy meal would have on your metabolism? Let's find out.

24 Dec 2019Good vs. Bad Science: Keto Hype, Cancer Research, & Fighting Misinformation · Kevin Bass, MS · #13801:37:53

Kevin Bass is unafraid to publicly call out those in the health & nutrition community he deems irresponsible...perhaps even dangerous.

Kevin states: “Bad science will hurt people”.

Passionate about truly helping people, his mission is to stop misinformation from spreading.

Albeit a controversial figure in the ketogenic diet community, we’ve found that Kevin isn’t as “anti-keto” as some would say. He’s an MD/PhD student whose thesis research actually focuses on the ketogenic diet and cancer. He’s acutely aware of the positive, neutral, & negative research, and does his best to bring a balanced perspective backed by published science.

In this episode, Geoff & Kevin discuss:

  • What about keto is overhyped & what is actually exciting? For example, is it curing diabetes or just putting it into remission? Does it have the potential to treat cancer?
  • Sensationalism vs. pragmatism: How can we create better science for the public? How can we determine who is a legitimate science-based health expert and who is not?
  • Kevin’s own personal health journey, nutrition protocols, challenges faced in medical school, & what motivates him.

12 May 2020#157 - Coronavirus Crisis Finally Reveals Metabolic Dysfunction as the True Pandemic? · Dr. Paul Saladino01:19:51

"Absolutely there are diets that can protect you against coronavirus. The health of an individual at a metabolic level is...everything."

Dr. Paul Saladino is the leading authority on the science and application of the carnivore diet. He has used this diet to reverse autoimmunity, chronic inflammation and mental health issues in hundreds of patients, many of whom had been told their conditions were untreatable.

Since the beginning of the global COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Saladino has been boldly voicing his opinions on how various countries implemented their lockdown policies and why the best, science-driven way to protect yourself begins with the root cause of so many diseases in the first place...

The state of your metabolic health.

According to this study (https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/met.2018.0105), only 12% of Americans are considered metabolically healthy. While there has not been formal random controlled trials published just yet, there is a strong case to be made with existing and emerging correlating data / science suggesting that the state of one's metabolic health is an essential factor when faced with the virus.

In this in-depth podcast interview, Geoff Woo & Dr. Paul Saladino discuss the timeline of the coronavirus, how skewed messaging is being pushed by the media, his evolved guidance for the carnivore diet and how insulin resistance is linked to immune system function, and even delve into some fascinating hypotheses that put the coronavirus' actual danger to human health into question.

20 Nov 2019Science of Better Sleep: Regulating Temperature & Making Sleep Data Actionable · Eight Sleep · #13401:05:23

Sleep is known as a common "pillar of health", yet is increasingly neglected in our modern society. Although technology has constantly been advancing, our beds have remained largely the same.

Stanford Professor Craig Heller & Matteo Franceschetti from Eight Sleep joins the podcast to discuss the science of better sleep.

How can we translate the "gold standard" of a clinical sleep environment to our own sleeping routines...our own homes? What sleep biomarkers make up a good night's rest? How important is body temperature for optimal sleep?

In addition, we discuss:

  • Sleep technology: The drawbacks of wearables, envisioning a future in which we can control and create our own optimal "sleep environment", & the power of thermoregulation.
  • How measuring "quality" of sleep works in a home setting and in a clinical setting
  • Importance of accessible & long-term health data: How did Matteo use his sleep data to predict oncoming illnesses?

Eight Sleep is kind enough to offer our listeners $150 off their Pod: Use code "HVMN" or click this link - https://www.eightsleep.com/hvmn.

05 Dec 2018The CRISPR Controversy: World’s First Gene-Edited Babies Created in China || Unfiltered ft. Dr. Josiah Zayner00:59:56

Welcome to an Unfiltered episode of the HVMN Podcast. This is a raw conversation centered on a hot and recent topic...breaking news style.

In what will probably be known as the most controversial & groundbreaking scientific advancement this year, Chinese scientist Dr. He Jiankui announced last week at the end of November 2018 that he created the world’s first genetically edited babies. Specifically, he used CRISPR to create immunity to HIV in twins, which were born earlier this year.

The blowback was immediate, with virtually the entire scientific community criticizing Dr. He as unethical. China’s vice minister of science and technology called the experiment unacceptable and said Dr. He’s scientific activities would be suspended.

Geoff chats with Dr. Josiah Zayner, a biohacker & CEO of the Odin - a genetic engineering company. Dr. Zayner was one of the first people to inject CRISPR to genetically edit his arm muscle tissue.

We discuss this scientific milestone of CRISPR babies, the ethical and moral questions surrounding the research and the subsequent birth of these babies,  and what this may mean for the future now that the Pandora’s box of has been opened.

23 Mar 2023#219: Resistance Training to Build a Resilient Body w/ Sal Di Stefano01:13:59

Sal started as a professional in the fitness industry as a trainer at the age of 18. His passion for fitness, combined with his love of people, quickly propelled him into big box gym management by the time he was 19 years old. During his career in gym management, he grand opened some of the largest gyms in the California Bay Area and was often recognized as a top performer in sales, production, and team leadership, earning him accolades from top industry leaders.

At the age of 24, he left the commercial gym industry to open his own fitness and wellness studio after he became dissatisfied with the big-box gym approach to health and fitness. He wanted to bring a wellness-based well, rounded approach to people. In his small studio facility, he brought in hormone and nutrition specialists, acupuncturists, gut health professionals, and meditative/bodywork providers, along with fitness trainers.

This well-rounded environment formed the voice that Sal is often currently lauded for. It was during his time in his wellness studio that he figured out how to solve the hardest and most persistent problems with fitness, health, and wellness. His approach led to long-term success with his clients, and he developed a behavioral-focused approach toward health and fitness.

After a decade of running his studio, he met Doug Egge, the current producer of Mind Pump, and shortly after, he met Adam Schafer and Justin Andrews. They quickly hit it off due to their different backgrounds but similar approaches to fitness and health, and they decided to start a fitness and health podcast. Mind Pump was launched and quickly became the number-one fitness and health podcast in the world.

02 Jun 2017The Potential of Cannabinoids ft. Joel Stanley || Episode 30 (Pt.1)00:30:01

Joel Stanley, the CEO of CW Hemp, joins us on the THINKING Podcast to discuss the origins of his family-run CBD company, the state of the rapidly growing industry, and how his CBD product can be used for biohacking. The inception of his company is especially interesting. CW Hemp breeds high CBD plants, the cannabinoid substance in cannabis and hemp that is non-psychoactive (by having very little THC) but maintains documented medicinal benefits, known for its anti-anxiety and anticonvulsant effects. Their flagship product was used to stop Charlotte's epileptic seizures, a little girl who had gone through every other medical procedure to no avail. Her usage of the product was featured in a CNN documentary and garnered national media coverage, and the product was then named after her. Since then, CW Hemp not only provides biohackers with a product that can protect the brain but also continues to be a beacon of hope for parents with children in similar situations.

29 Jan 2021Free Fatty Friday #12: Defining "Modern Nutrition"00:19:09

What should we eat? When and how should we eat it? These are questions that every single generation of humans spanning across hundreds of thousands of years have pondered and debated.

In modern times, it’s arguable that even with all the progression in metabolic biochemistry, physiology, and the culinary arts, we’re further from a practical application of human nutrition than ever. 3/4 of us are overweight or obese,1/3 of us are pre-diabetic or diabetic, and almost 9/10 of us have some form of metabolic syndrome. All the while, we spend more per capita on healthcare than ever. This is an indictment of our modern food system. This is an unacceptable failure.

In this week's Free Fatty Friday, Geoffrey Woo claims and defines the term "modern nutrition." He talks the history, the evolution, the application of nutrition, and how we move humanity forward with an enlightened approach to modern nutrition.

01 May 2017 An Alternative View of Cancer Treatment ft. Thomas Seyfried || Episode 27 (Pt. 1)00:36:15

Geoff sits down and has a 1:1 conversation with Professor Thomas Seyfried, a renowned and controversial researcher who authored "Cancer as a Metabolic Disease".

Cancer has generally been considered a genetic disease since its inception, but Professor Seyfried fights against that view and argues that it is a metabolic disease. Encouraging doctors to look into metabolic treatments as the first method to combat cancer cells, Seyfried may have a point. Metabolic treatments include caloric restriction, fasting, and ketogenic diets...all of which Seyfried speculates have the ability to help the body and kill off cancer cells. There are certain bodies of research showing that cancer cells thrive on sugars and amino acids, which metabolic therapies have the potential to control. Could cancer truly be a metabolic disease?

07 Jan 2020Less is More: The Case for Minimalist Fitness & Animal Nutrition · Jerry Teixeria · #13901:36:58

Minimalism can be applied to improve various aspects of one's life.

Jerry Teixeria, faced with the realities of raising children and attending to his family, going to the gym 6x a week quickly became unsustainable.

Shifting his focus to bodyweight training & progressive calisthenics in the comforts of his own sunny backyard, Jerry reached his goals of physique, healthspan, & more...all by dropping the weights.

This shift in his training approach even carried over to his nutrition protocol. Once a follower of the common "6 pre-prepped meals a day" advice preached by the traditional fitness community, Jerry simplified his eating habits and attained even greater results. From intermittent fasting (warrior diet) to eating a carnivore diet (correcting his autoimmune symptoms in the process), Jerry has run a wide gamut of self-experiments that he dives deep into on this week's podcast.

In this episode, Geoff & Jerry discuss:

  • The benefits of progressive bodyweight training and how one can get started. Why could this more primal approach be more effective than the standard heavy squat lifts you see others pushing through at your local gym?
  • The importance of continually overloading your workouts in order to avoid "plateauing". In the case of body-weight exercises such as handstands, pushups, and pull-ups, what does Jerry suggest one can do to ensure overloading is happening during a routine?
  • Jerry's experience with the carnivore diet, and why he is now more "carnivore-ish".
  • The effect of exercise on metabolism and longevity (mTor, IGF-1)

27 Jun 2019Peak Carnivore: The Ironman Champ Who Only Eats Meat · #119 ft. Pete Jacobs01:11:21

In the world of sports nutrition, a constantly evolving field, more and more athletes are adopting low-carbohydrate diets. Especially in the case of long distance endurance racing, an aerobic-heavy activity, wouldn't it make sense that athletes could benefit from being fueled by fat vs. carbohydrates?

This is a popular debate with conflicting evidence and anecdotes presented from both sides. In this podcast, we capture the personal story from a former Ironman Champion: Pete Jacobs. He's not a carbohydrate athlete, nor a traditionally ketogenic one...Pete is purely fueled by meat.

Pete has faced a life-long battle with his personal health. Ever since he found it nearly impossible to get his heart rate up during high school sports, along with rough bouts of fatigue and gut issues, he knew he was facing an uphill battle. Although he marched on to successfully pursue a sporting career, Pete has struggled in the health department as he pushed his bodily limits in the performance department.

With intuition that the core root cause was linked to his metabolic health, Pete gave the ketogenic diet a spin. He saw notable progress, but eventually found his nutritional calling to be one (or two) steps further...

The carnivore diet.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Why the carnivore diet worked for Pete and what health issues were corrected
  • What Pete eats: Organ meats, seasons with salt but no pepper, what animals he's tried, and more
  • Tips for endurance performance: Using ketone esters & caffeine, the power of positive mental reinforcement, and applying endurance ideals to normal life

25 Jun 2017The Modern Man ft. Daniel Doty || Episode 31 (Pt. 2)00:29:29

This week, Geoff sits down with Dan Doty, the founder of Evryman and a recurring guest on the Joe Rogan show. Dan leads various "men's communities", groups of men who come together to find their true selves and get in touch with their emotions...often retreating in nature to block the distractions of the modern world. Dan makes it crystal clear that these groups harbor no anti-feminist sentiments, and in fact stresses that these retreats are less about finding what it means to be a man...but what it means to be human.  Geoff and Dan discuss the importance of self-reflection, the problem with social constructions regarding what it means to be a "man", and the techniques Dan has learned over the years mentoring young troubled men and getting them on the right path.

05 Mar 2021Free Fatty Friday #16: Miami: Autophagy, Novelty, Serendipity.00:31:29

I have officially moved to Miami, Florida! It's great so far and I break down my initial positive impressions into three categories: (1) Autophagy, (2) Novelty, and (3) Serendipity.

(3:55) 1. Autophagy - how to recycle and re-underwrite our schedule and our productivity.

(15:13) 2. Novelty - how to inject new stimuli to keep our minds and our attitude young and childlike.

(22:16) 3. Serendipity - how to maximize the random luck that physical interactions enable.

05 May 2020#156 - Apolo Ohno (8x Olympic Medalist) Reveals His Mental Hacks for Success01:07:47

Apolo Anton Ohno has a remarkable track record as an athlete, becoming the most decorated American Olympian at the Winter Olympics and inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. Post-sport career (& post "Dancing With the Stars" fame, as we're sure some are aware), Apolo continues to blaze new paths for himself and dedicates much of his time empowering others to reach their own goals.

In this podcast interview, Apolo firmly states that he was at a factual, physiological disadvantage during his short track speed skating competitions when compared to his competitors.

So, how did Apolo come out so frequently on top? What was he doing differently? How did he win 8 Olympic medals?

As much as he was training his body for peak physical performance, he was also training his mind...if not even harder than his body.

Pushing his mental game to the absolute limit, sharpening it, and continuously channeling it (all the way from training to race day) was his secret weapon. His mind was the key to success.

The mental resilience and competitive edge he built up during his athletic career were never lost. Apolo, with unwavering discipline, continually adapts that performance mindset to support ongoing personal and professional growth. From following a cyclical keto diet to intermittent fasting, Apolo stays on top of both his mental and physical game.

07 May 2018The Military Development of Ketone Esters for Enhanced Performance ft. Joe Bielitzki || Episode 6700:40:14

Before there was HVMN Ketone, there was the "Metabolic Dominance" program.

This program, initiated by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), was spear-headed by Joe Bielitzki.

The goal?

To enable superior physical and physiological warfighter performance by controlling energy metabolism on demand.

The result?

15+ years of research that led to the creation of the world's first ketone ester.

Joe, who was also NASA's Chief Veterinary Officer, joins us this week to share a special, behind-the-scenes view of the ketone ester's deep history.

In this discussion, you'll discover:

  • Why the other compounds Joe tested was not reaching the bar, and how he ended up with going with the ketone ester
  • How DARPA executes on programs to improve soldier performance
  • Ponder over how primal humans utilized ketosis, and why modern humans can benefit from this "ancient" fuel

22 Jan 2019Geoffrey Woo Runs 30 Miles for His 30th Birthday || #10000:35:05

I turned 30 a few weeks ago on Dec 27. Two weeks before, I decided to do something pro-active to celebrate. I decided to run 30 miles.

It was an aggressive goal given that the longest I’ve ever run was a half-marathon (just 13.1 miles). I was going to do more than double with less than two weeks to train.

But..was it truly insane? I’ve interviewed world record-breaking athletes, Olympians, former Navy SEALS, and ultra marathon champions on this program. I’ve seen numerous examples of people achieving the impossible. The arbitrary milestone of 30 years of not dying seemed like a good excuse to see how far I could push myself.

I’m proud to say I did it, and I believe all our listeners can accomplish their own version of my 30-mile challenge. This time around, our co-host Dr. Brianna Stubbs sits in the interviewer chair, diving into my two-week “training”, what was going through my mind as the miles passed by, and what I’ve learned from the experience.

25 Oct 2019Carnivore Conquers 7-Day Fast, Bacterial Infection, & Depression · Mikhaila Peterson · #13201:00:30

Mikhaila Peterson has officially coined her version of the carnivore diet: The Lion Diet.

Strictly sticking to ruminant meat, salt, and water cured Mikhaila of her autoimmune issues back in 2018. Most recently, she's been experimenting with multi-day intermittent fasting as another lifestyle and nutritional intervention.

While Mikhaila initially targeted for fat loss, she also found that fasting was a profound tool for mental health and emotional stability.

What else happens when a carnivore embarks on a 7-day fast? Let's find out.

In this episode, Geoff and Mikhaila discuss:

  • 7-Day Fasting: Experience, biomarker data, lessons learned, and tips & tricks
  • The carnivore diet and how it may have affected Mikhaila's microbiome (resulting in C. Difficile infection)
  • Evolution of the carnivore community

05 Nov 2018From Keto to Carnivore: Did Humans Evolve From a Meat-based Diet? || #9001:08:44

The carnivore diet. Eat meat, drink water.

With no vegetables, fruits, or carbs, the carnivore diet is reaching fad/cult status as a nutritional strategy that some swear by...while many wave off as unscientific and unsafe. While it may be easy to glance at the headlines and think "Now, that's just crazy", we remember when intermittent fasting received the same mixed reactions in its infancy. In true HVMN fashion, we will look at the available data, anecdotes, and theories before closing the book on the carnivore diet.

Travis Statham, our carnivorous guest today, moderates well-known carnivore communities including World Carnivore Tribe & r/zerocarb. Before going carnivore, Travis ate keto for more than 5 years.

In this discussion, you'll discover:

  • Why carnivores believe the fiber from vegetables aren't essential for human health
  • The nutrient density of red meat & misconceptions of saturated fat
  • Theories on human evolution and how these theories inspire the carnivorous philosophy

Geoff and Brian Muraresku, the best-selling author of “The Immortality Key” discuss the provocative theory of psychedelics at the heart of the Ancient Greek and Roman mysteries, early Christianity, and Western Civilization.

This isn't a college dorm-room stoner talk. Brian spent over 12 years studying the ancient classics in their original form of Ancient Greek, exploring the Vatican's Secret Archives and underground catacombs, and tying the historical record with the latest analytical and spectral analysis techniques of archaeochemistry to demonstrate a rigorous look at the hypothesis that psychedelics was at the heart of both Greek & Roman mysteries and paleo-Christian eucharist.

If this is all true, what does this imply for the future of our civilization and culture?

23 Apr 2020#153 - Running Through Hell: Enduring Ultrarunning & Boosting Mental Health · Lisa Tamati01:26:10

Lisa Tamati is a professional ultra endurance athlete who has crushed some of the toughest endurance events in the world, such as the grueling Badwater Ultramarathon held in Death Valley. Lisa became the first woman from New Zealand to complete this infamous race.

Lisa’s adventures have taken her far and wide, including a harrowing expedition through the Libyan Desert that nearly killed her. Despite having over 140 ultramarathons under her belt and achieving various accomplishments, Lisa has also struggled with her mental health - battling with her self esteem, body image, depression, fear, and anxiety.

Ultrarunning forced Lisa to learn how to sharpen her mental health and push her physical limits even through traumatic events.

In this interview, Lisa goes into great detail about how both her athletic & general life experiences (both positive & negative) made her become the woman she is today. When her mother had an aneurism and fell critically ill, she was unresponsive to the doctors’ standard of healthcare. Lisa then took matters into her own hands and saved her mother’s life through a self-researched protocol that incorporated hyperbaric oxygen therapy, targeted nutrition, nootropics, and more.

After 4 years, Lisa’s mother is now healthy - regaining her cognition, peripheral vision, and driver’s license. Lisa has ran through hell & back, and dedicates much of her time now motivating and training others become the best they can be.

You can follow Lisa and her journey on her own podcast here: https://www.lisatamati.com/page/podcast

04 Mar 2019Making Science Accessible: Tips on Reading Studies, Science on Social Media, & Women in Academia ft. Dr. Paige Jarreau01:05:19

Hello listeners, and welcome to the HVMN Podcast. It’s Dr. Brianna Stubbs. We’re switching things up here this week, as I’ll be your host...giving Geoff a bit of time off!

This week, we are going to look at the topic of Science communication. If you’ve tuned in to my Research Roundup series, which can get quite science-heavy at times, you may find that it can be tough to follow along with the medical terms and jargon. And honestly, it can be challenging for me to break down these complicated topics and make them interesting and accessible for people who have different levels of background science knowledge.

When thinking about the ‘art and science’ of communication, with science you might need to go even more towards the art - to try and bridge the gap between research and public understanding. This has always been a pain point. With the inescapable rise of social media and the big uptick in numbers of scientists and influencers in health and performance who are taking to Twitter to share their findings and thoughts, science communication has changed a lot in the last few years. It will surely continue to evolve.

I explore this hefty topic with Dr. Paige Jarreau, whose research focuses on the intersection of science communication, journalism, and new media. Along with teaching at LSU, she works at LifeOmic, a telemedicine app we touch upon in this episode. Page also practices some of Team HVMN’s favorite interventions, such as intermittent fasting and meditation. We chat about science on social media, tips for beginners on reading research papers, and some of the challenges women face in academia.

Geoffrey Woo and James discuss the importance of not being dogmatic about diets, how certain practices from the past are making a comeback to modern society (i.e. feast and famine periods), and the influence nutrigenomics (as well as nature-based philosophies) have on each individual.

10 Oct 2017Biohacking in Silicon Valley ft. Melia Robinson || Episode 4501:03:11

Biohacking, a phenomenon with roots all over the country, has fiercely taken over the competitive tech world of Silicon Valley. Executives are taking nootropics to gain the extra edge they need over their competitors, entrepreneurs are fasting to stay clear-headed as they accelerate company growth, and even everyday joggers are tracking their footsteps and making micro-adjustments to their diet and training to beat their PR. Thanks to dedicated media reporters, everyone around the world can learn about this pivotal time of human improvement and join in. Episode 45 features Melia Robinson, a senior reporter at Business Insider. Melia's forte of covering the advancements of the 21st century led her to become intertwined with the biohacking community in Silicon Valley. She's been around the block by interviewing countless biohackers and sharing their regimes, experimenting with the ketogenic diet for 2 months and publishing a popular feature about the experience, and falling in love with Soylent (a meal replacement)...which led her to realize that biohacking can be for everyone. Geoff and Melia discuss her history reporting on the biohacking culture in San Francisco, the challenges and triumphs she had following the ketogenic diet, the rise of hospitality businesses in the marijuana industry, and answer questions from the community.

17 Oct 2017Correcting Nutritional Deficiencies ft. Christopher Kelly || Episode 4601:01:14

There comes a moment in many of our lives when we realize health is truly in our own hands. We have been conditioned to only go to the doctor when there is an obvious symptom, and once it is corrected we are good to go. It's rare that you ever find out why you had said symptom, and therein lies the gap between healthy and unhealthy. To be healthy, you need to dive into the root causes of your issues and fix them. To be healthy, you need to take a step back and read research from multiple sources. To be healthy, you need to implement the solutions and track your progress. To be healthy, you must embody the biohacking ethos. Episode 46 features Christopher Kelly, an athletic biohacker and host of the Nourish Balance Thrive podcast. Coming from a computer science background (similar to Geoffrey Woo himself), Chris was forced to use his engineering perspective to fix the countless health issues he was struggling with. Even though he looked completely normal to any passing bystander, Chris had constant brain fog, uncontrollable food cravings, non-existent libido, allergies, nagging injuries with no known cause, chronic fatigue, caffeine dependency, and was nearly diabetic. His doctor prescribed drugs to fix some of his symptoms, but Chris knew he had to attack his problems at its core. By completely altering his diet, cleansing his gut microbiome, taking multiple lab tests (& discovering underlying metabolic sensitivities), Chris began to understand what was having a toll on his health. From there, he implemented the right practices to reverse his diabetes, achieve an optimal cognitive state, and improve his overall lifestyle.  Geoff and Chris discuss the strenuous journey achieving a healthy state Chris was proud of, the importance of starting from the basics and being aware of any nutritional and hormonal deficiencies, and ponder whether the ketogenic diet is truly the "holy grail" of diets.

Whether it's through diet, exercise, nootropics, or cutting-edge biotechnology, there’s tons of levers we can pull to improve our health and performance. Siim Land, a biohacker and high-performance coach, has been experimenting with these levers much of his life, recently sharing his knowledge and experiments through his Youtube channel. While he has dabbled in many biohacks, his bread and butter interventions (or should we say just butter) are following the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting.

What do keto and IF have in common? One of the main end goals of the two interventions is ketosis - a physiological state in which ketones are being burned as fuel.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • The intuitive “feeling” of ketosis and how you may not need to rely on ketone monitors all the time as you become more experienced
  • What changes in biomarkers like IGF-1 might mean when eating high-fat
  • What is okay to consume when following keto or intermittent fasting

26 Nov 2019What NO Politician Is Saying About Healthcare · Geoff Talk00:18:17

Fixing healthcare costs & health insurance is part of standard political speeches & debates for US presidential candidates today.

Everyone knows there’s a problem with the healthcare system. However, virtually all of the politician's discussions & proposals are based on bandaid solutions.

The real issue? The healthcare crisis begins with our widespread health crisis.

No politician is talking about how modern lifestyle and industrialized nutrition is destroying the health of millions of Americans.

No politician is going to talk about this because telling the masses that their comfortable lifestyle is unhealthy and dangerous is not what they want to hear.

Healthcare is primarily fixing people when they're broken. Our current society and culture are breaking too many people, too quickly.

In this video, Geoffrey Woo dives deep into the issues of healthcare, population health, and what he believes we can all do to steer society in a better direction.

28 Aug 2020#166 - Research Roundup: What happens when you mix *baking soda* with ketone esters?00:48:08

Geoff and Latt are back on the Podcast! Today, they discuss Prof. Peter Hespel's new paper "Bicarbonate Unlocks the Ergogenic Action of Ketone Monoester Intake in Endurance Exercise"

In Episode 163, we discussed the totality of data behind ketone esters. Some contexts show benefit, some contexts have shown no benefit for ketone esters. What are the deeper mechanisms behind these contradictory results?

Geoff and Latt break down Prof. Hespel's exciting new paper that shows that a combination of sodium bicarbonate (or baking soda) in combination with ketone esters enhance performance upwards of 5%, while each alone show no benefit as compared to a glucose control.

This one is a great one for athletes, coaches, and biohackers to learn the very latest recommendations and protocols of how to use ketone esters directly from Geoff and Latt. This one is also great for metabolism nerds who want to geek out about the subtle details relating to ketone esters including acidosis, pH buffering, how ion levels shift in muscles, and how these all interplay together.

14 Oct 2019Carnivore vs. Vegan Diet: Separating Science from Dogma · #130 ft. Frank Tufano00:58:28

Animal-based vs. plant-based nutrition - What's most optimal for human health & performance?

Frank Tufano, a follower of an animal-based, zero-carb diet for over 5 years, has garnered quite a unique reputation on Youtube. Along with his informative videos on the ins-and-outs of a carnivorous lifestyle, Frank doesn't shy away from scrutinizing the rapidly growing (and arguably more culturally accepted) plant-based diet.

In this podcast, Geoff and Frank discuss:

· The cultural impact of a recent study (published in Annals of Internal Medicine) that concluded that the current public-health recommendation to eat less red and processed meat isn’t backed by strong evidence

· Cooked meat vs. Raw meat: What are the proposed benefits for consuming raw meat or fermented foods?

· Analyzing the common arguments for veganism (i.e. reducing environmental impact) and how Frank debunks them

19 Nov 2018Meat Heals: The Autoimmune Disease Case ft. Mikhaila Peterson || #9200:39:47

After years of failed diets & medications, Mikhaila Peterson found the answer to her life-long issues: Meat.

"Meat heals" is a popular tagline within the carnivore community. This rings true for Mikhaila, who has suffered from autoimmune disorders & depression for the majority of her life. Simply eating an organic olive could trigger a waterfall of symptoms that could cause the next few weeks to be an ordeal.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Discussing the common critique that the carnivore diet works purely because it's an elimination diet
  • How to incorporate a meat-only diet into a sustainable lifestyle
  • Fitness vs. Nutrition...what should come first?

24 Sep 2018Hydrating the Body: Electrolyte Replenishment, Combating Cramps, & Sweat Testing ft. Andy Blow || #8400:56:50

Hydration is more than just drinking "enough" water. There's room to optimize according to your own biology, needs, and goals.

Andy Blow, a triathlete and sports scientist, suffered from serious cramps throughout his athletic career. There are many reasons why people cramp, and a key mechanism is through dehydration and poor electrolyte replenishment. All athletes sweat, yet there's a huge variance in sweat and sodium losses, which can lead to sub-optimal performance and a terrible feeling we've all experienced: Cramps. To combat this, Andy founded Precision Hydration to help endurance athletes and a number of teams in the NFL, NBA, and MLB meet their personalized hydration and electrolyte needs.

In this discussion, you'll discover:

  • The misconceptions of hydration and electrolytes, and how there is a huge variance in how much sodium each individual loses when sweating
  • How and why endurance athletes tend to lean more into the quantified-self philosophy than other types of athletes
  • The physiology behind cramping
