"The most valuable lesson I’ve learned as a journalist is that everybody is interesting if you ask the right questions. If someone is dull or uninteresting, it’s on you” - Kate Murphy

For this minicast episode, I’m excited to share my thoughts on a question that was sent in by Jamie, a listener who has been incredibly supportive of my show and who will soon be a guest herself! Jamie sent in several great questions regarding podcasting that I couldn’t wait to dive into!
For this minicast I answer her first question about advice for being a guest on a podcast.
I truly want to thank Jamie as it was such a great question and an awesome way to kick off this new series!  If you're curious about starting your own podcast or have general podcasting questions, contact me and let's get those questions answered.

Send us a text

“I never wanted another woman to feel alone, or to feel shame about her body or to go through experiences alone in the way I went through experiences; if I could just touch a few women’s lives, to me it was all worth it, I had to tell my story.”

Hope is a renewable option: If you run out of it at the end of the day, you get to start over in the morning.― Barbara Kingsolver

Hello and welcome to part 2 of a listener submission Q & A! One of my listeners, Jamie, answered my call to action by submitting a question when I announced my new segment, Conversations About Podcasting.

This week I answer the second of Jamie’s questions by sharing my thoughts on equipment and hardware best practices for guests. Admittedly as a guest, these two items aren’t a heavy lift, but there are, in my humble opinion, some hard stop rules to try to follow.

You can find more minicasts or submit a topic you would like discussed at:

17 Apr 2022Rising To The Level of Our Talent, A Sassy Have A Seat Minicast00:30:25

Send us a text

"There comes a point when you have to rise to the level of your talent"― Ryan Clark

This week's topic is centered around something I heard a few months ago during the 2022 Super Bowl week. Many of you are very vocal about how far you’ve come in your careers and how you’ve quite deservedly, risen to the top level of your career ladder. Great! So why is it that I am constantly seeing posts about, to be perfectly frank, petty issues that should be well beneath you at this stage of your career? Either you’re the high powered, talented executive assistant you claim to be or...you’re not.

Yes friends, this episode gets a little sassy, I do go there, and if you know me you know I’m not afraid to say what needs to be said. Have A Seat with me and hear why “rising to the level of our talent” had me running for the record button this week.

01 May 2022Can True Happiness At Work Be Found? A Conversation with Happiness At Work Researcher, Dr. Kathryn Owler00:44:12

Send us a text

"It’s good to take a pause and really think about what is going on for me, how do I want it to be, why is it not going quite how I would want it to be, why am I having these feelings about this job that maybe in the past it was all kind of fine, but now has all these different things going on; start to ask ourselves, am I having fun at work and if not, how can I start to do that a bit more?"

Dr. Kathryn Owler has become passionate about finding ways to experience more fun and enjoyment at work.  As a woman researcher she started her career expecting to have a blast at work all the time - only to become disillusioned in her first job and subsequent jobs thereafter. Consequently, she channeled her despair & disappointment into academic research – most recently sharing the secrets of workers who’ve had fun at any job they’ve ever had!

08 May 2022A Peek Inside the World of Supporting HNWI's, A Fascinating Conversation with Executive Assistant, Kaleen Skersies00:43:22

Send us a text

"At some point you cannot physically do everything that is on your list, I had to delegate to trustworthy individuals because I couldn’t possibly do every single task myself; there just aren’t enough hours in the day"

Kaleen Skersies is an Executive Assistant to the CEO at Esper. Kaleen specializes in the holistic support of C-Suite executives as they lead their teams.

Before joining Esper, Kaleen previously worked for multiple HNW individuals and has served as estate planner in the private service sector. I was excited to talk to Kaleen as she represents a segment of admin professionals that I haven’t had the opportunity to talk with in depth, executive assistants who support high net worth individuals or HNWI’s. Kaleen’s engaging tales of the level of support that is expected for this incredibly niche client base was fascinating to hear, I was truly both astounded and impressed.

15 May 2022The Value of Bridging The Literacy Gap, A Conversation with Hindi's Library Co-Founder Leslie Gang00:42:22

Send us a text

“It’s very gratifying to see that these books are helping to bridge the literacy gap and that the team is able to get books into the hands of children who don’t have any; they want to read, to experience being a kid, seeing that it’s really theirs, there’s nothing that can replace that.”

In August of 2018, a community lost an incredible human being, Dr. Hindi Krinsky, at the young age of 32. To continue Hindi's legacy, family and friends chose to build three free-standing libraries in her children's school. In order to fill these libraries, they reached out to the community for gently used books.

Within two weeks, they received approximately 500 books. They knew then that this was going to be much bigger than just three small libraries.

Meet the Co-Founder of Hindi's Libraries and children's author in her own right, Leslie Gang, whose passion and love of literacy has helped a small community project become an international literacy movement that has helped children around the world embrace their love of reading.

22 May 2022A Have A Seat Minicast: Let's Talk Training!00:27:14

Send us a text

The next time you’re tasked with teaching someone something, remember: it’s only easy for you because you already know how to do it. ~ Seth Godin

We see the signs everywhere and read the articles about the Great Reshuffling and with all this change we are bound to be tasked with helping to onboard a new employee or team member, either voluntarily or voluntold.

In either case, I think it’s important as either the trainee or trainer, to exercise a high degree of empathy in these unique times we're in. We all remember what it was like when we were new to the organization or new to the department, learning  and memorizing all the faces, names, policies, and let’s not forget those famous acronyms…yikes! It can all be just a bit overwhelming!

I recently started in a new role, which led me to thinking about how we handle those trainee/trainer moments.  This topic is one that I explore and chat about in this minicast for May.

Your turn! Agree or disagree? Register to be a guest and let's chat about it.  I would welcome the chance to continue the conversation with you too:

29 May 2022Spilling the Tea on All Things Remote Work, A Conversation with Remote Work Expert, Ali Greene00:42:30

Send us a text

"Digital nomad life, even created in your home town, offers much to explore in the areas in which people live. How can doing new things, in your life and getting out of your comfort zone, actually lead to more internal comfort and learning?"

Remote work looks and feels different for many, with no apparent hard and fast rules in place, which is why this conversation with Ali Greene, was pure gold.

With seven years and counting of remote work experience, and four years leading remote teams while traveling full-time, Ali Greene is a digital nomad at heart - spending most of her time in Spain and France.

Her mission is to empower people and companies, helping them thrive in making work (and life!) more freeing, flexible, and focused. Ali was named a "Remote Expert and Influencer to Watch" by Remote Teams (Acquired by Gusto) and is a frequent Speaker and Podcast Guest on all things Remote Work.

05 Jun 2022Real Self Confidence vs. The Falsehood of Perfectionism, A Conversation with Leadership Coach Asia Bribiesca-Hedin00:43:26

Send us a text

"No one, absolutely no one, has more agency in your career, your professional growth, your satisfaction or your contribution than you do. No one."

Imposter Syndrome. Self Confidence. Self-doubt. Unfortunately for women in the workplace, these words have never before held so much meaning as they do today.

That is why I was very much looking forward to this week's conversation with the Founder of Bridgewell Professional Services and Leadership Coach, Asia Bribiesca-Hedin. One of Asia's primary coaching focus is on assisting women in becoming their own career strategists, to help us answer the question, what is the intention that drives us, how do we show up for not only ourselves but those on our team as well?

Our conversation centered around, how we may normalize imposter syndrome, to turn it around and use it to our advantage, and how those in leadership roles, should find the managerial courage to become allies to the women in their organizations to help break down those all too real, imposter syndrome feelings, and so much more.

Send us a text

“Whatever is left over is what we leave for ourselves, so it’s shifting that perspective to start investing that time in yourself so that you can discover who you are”

Bridget Belden is Founder and CEO of Magenta Consulting, a coaching organization providing world class tools to empower women to discover who they are beyond being a mom. Prior to her current venture, Bridget worked for more than 15 years in retail and apparel manufacturing. After a very personal introspective journey in pursuit of finding her purpose, she left her job to explore her calling. In 2006, she founded Ripple Kids, a nonprofit seeking to inspire and empower kids to take action in their communities.

After 10 years running Ripple Kids full time and with her own kids gone from the nest, she realized it was an opportune time for her next life evolution, starting a venture based on her own journey of self-discovery, hence, Magenta Consulting was born. Bridget supports moms through life-changing one-on-one coaching and free transformational workshops, reconnecting with who they were before they had kids in pursuit of a life of passion and purpose.

Where there is perfection there is no story to tell.― Ben Okri

Yes this is another quick chat about WFH/remote work. I know you may be tired of hearing me speak on and on about the joys of working remotely, and I get it. However this week, I wanted to divert the conversation a bit and talk about the social emotional aspect of remote work, and call out the "mean person" tactics and attitudes that I've encountered along my WFH journey. So if you'll bear with me a few minutes, I share two quick areas I felt were worth mentioning.

Topic #1 - WFH Shade and Mean Person Tactics
Topic #2 - The End of the Agonizing In-Office Only Forced Fun Activities

As usual this minicast is a bit on the sassy side and as you may or may not know, I don't care, it's how I roll and I hope you  enjoy and appreciate the sarcasm, humor and candor.

“The amount of energy your body has to deal with when faced with a trauma is comparable to a house when it’s not designed to face lightning”

Carolin Hauser is an internationally recognized speaker and teacher on the subjects of spirituality, relationships, emotional healing, and Bonding-Based Lovemaking. She combines her knowledge about energetic healing and conscious co-creation to help couples go from feeling frustrated, stuck, and disconnected in their intimacy to feeling deeply connected, excited, and fulfilled so that they can feel whole and fully expressed in life, and are able to create honeymoon feelings that last.

One of the intriguing things I learned throughout the span of our conversation was that even in these topsy turvy times many of us find ourselves in, true spiritual connection can be found with our partners and through this connecting we may find a path to healing past traumas.

Betsy Kauffman has observed and worked side by side with hundreds of leaders for the past 20 years and has seen just about every variation of how Leadership Teams operate and execute (both successfully and not so successfully). She deeply understands and has experienced firsthand when the team of individuals charged with leading the organization are not aligned, focused, and working as one, the rest of the organization suffers.

Her superpowers include the ability to see, name, and discuss the "elephants in the room" and the ability to empathetically deliver honest and open feedback.

This is part 1 of our 2 part conversation as there was a moment where we naturally ventured a bit off topic to discuss the value that can be found when administrative support professionals diversify their talents and time into something not work related.

It was such a great segment that when I cut it from episode 1, I decided on the spot, to create a part 2 featuring just that part of the chat. Be sure to check out the prior episode to appreciate the full scope of this fun conversation.

As is the case with most of my minicasts, two events happened this past week that inspired me to hop on the mic.
Inspiration #1 came in the form of a webinar that was about as far from being diverse as you could get, in unfortunately too many ways.
Inspiration #2 came when I heard an alternative definition of what it means to be an introvert. Truly blew my mind, I love when that happens!

09 Oct 2022Leading From Our Living Rooms, A Conversation With The Living Room Leader Author, Debbie Goodman00:38:11

Send us a text

“Everybody became a Living Room Leader in the early days of lockdown; depending on your home setup, you were leading from the living room, from the bathroom, from the closet…everyone was forced into this remote work leadership situation."

I was incredibly excited for the opportunity to Have A Seat with Debbie Goodman, author of Amazon #1 best seller, The Living Room Leader: Leadership Lessons for a Hybrid Future.

As Debbie has stated, around mid-March 2020 or thereabouts, many became Living Room Leaders (or Bedroom/Kitchen/Garage Leaders), having to figure out new ways to manage, motivate, hire and engage their teams with no road map, no ‘best practice’ guidelines, and no ‘how-to-lead-remote-teams-RIGHT-NOW’ training manual.

As CEO of Jack Hammer Global, Debbie understands the shift that many leaders have had to make in record time, in order to lead, hire and engage their people, during what is undoubtedly the most challenging work-life experience that any of us have ever encountered.

"You can’t be that kid standing at the top of the water slide, overthinking it. You have to go down the chute." ~ Tina Fey

As an employee of a primarily remote work organization, I am continually impressed by the amount of resources they have  available for their remote teams. One such resource is a brief feel good newsletter with helpful life tips and hacks that make for a light hearted read.

One such newsletter recently shared tips on how to gear up for holiday guests and socializing. The tips they offered were really good, and they got me thinking how great these would work within the office environment as well, whether remote, hybrid or in-office. So I took to the mic and offered my rebooted take on their advice.

So in the ghouly spirit of October, I took to the mic to chat about the ways in which we should bring back the more free spirited characteristics of our inner child that honestly, may have been pushed aside as we've gotten older.

When did we start operating from a place of fear? Fear of speaking up? Fear of being direct? Fear of taking a misstep and course correcting? Fear of learning something new? Fear of being honest? Fear of laughing until our sides hurt? Fear of admitting to what brings us joy?

We should not judge people by their peak of excellence; but by the distance they have traveled from the point where they started.― Henry Ward Beecher

Quiet quitting. We've all heard the phrase that has gained traction in the last several months. My take on quiet quitting is that it's the slow and low key disengagement from ones role at work, typically from those who are dissatisfied with their work or workplace.
I believe it's real, as I've experienced it in my career journey; however one trick truly helped me work my way through it and allowed me to gain back the control that was contributing to my quiet quitting fatigue.

"Sometimes all that you need is someone who can believe in you; more than you do."― Andy Grammar

I was recently in a unique position to provide support to a fellow executive assistant, who, for all intents and purposes, was experiencing extreme burnout, to the point where they were clinically diagnosed with several different conditions.

From my perspective this wasn't something that came on overnight, I witnessed their concerning decline over several months. It was heartbreaking, scary and made me quite honestly, feel helpless. I wanted to do so much for them, but I had to coach myself that supportive space and a gentle touch, was what was needed most.

Send us a text

We must reject not only the stereotypes that others hold of us, but also the stereotypes that we hold of ourselves.― Shirley Chisholm

Introduction is defined as: a formal presentation of one person to another.

I believe it is a simple act that can carry a lot of weight.

The way and manner in which we introduce ourselves can be a direct reflection of how we view ourselves through others eyes.  Along with the tone and the words we use, all of which can add up to a rich or poor introduction, and in this new workplace we are in, those first few seconds matter.

As a podcaster I have the pleasure of conducting introductions weekly so listen in for some helpful tips to ensure your next introduction is on point.

Send us a text

Never look down on anybody unless you’re helping them up.― Jesse Jackson

Welcome to 2023! What Will Be Your Word For The Year?

When I first heard about finding a motivating word for the year, in place of new years resolutions, I was immediately on board.

The theory behind resolutions are to help us stay on track with any intentions or goals that we may have set for ourselves at the start of a new year.

When in actuality they can be stress inducing, frustrating and just down right impossible to maintain. That doesn't sound like a pleasant way to start the year to me.

But when I heard about choosing a word for the year that will be a guiding light or a north star, well, I was all in.

What we need now is affirmations, positivity and encouragement, not a reminder of what we aren't doing right.

I've found my word for the year, and I happily share it in this week's episode. What will your word for 2023 be?

Everybody has talent, it's just a matter of moving around until you've discovered what it is. ― George Lucas

Have you ever heard of the phrase executive presence? Do you know what it is?
I honestly really like the term and think it can cover a lot of ground in how we work within our roles.

To me, executive presence is the way we conduct ourselves when our boss isn't in the room, from the way we speak to colleagues to the emails we send even the way we speak over the phone, all come into play.

In this episode I share 3 quick tips:

  • the ways we can operate with an executive presence mindset,
  • why having executive presence matters in our roles, and lastly,
  • how all of that can tie together to become a part of our workplace brand

If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun.― Katharine Hepburn

"Because we said so." "That's the way it's always been done."

Show of hands if you are so over hearing those excuses in the workplace when leaders make these proclamations from on high dictating a new office policy or rule, offering no further explanations or offers of discussion.

Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news for leaders who operate with this closed mindset but I'm afraid the days of employees following blindly along are O-V-E-R. Thats right, over. Or at the very least, should be.

This week I put my sassy hat back on and offer my insight into why we need to question everything in the workplace in 2023.  Such as:

  • Job responsibilities
  • Office policies
  • WFH v. In office mandates

Are you with me?

This week I share a few tips to help us keep up in a fast paced office while also maintaining a positive attitude despite the pressure.

Episode highlights:

  • Knowing what the office pace is, before you accept the job offer

Look, you started your career by getting up on a stage that no one told you to get up on, saying a bunch of shit no one wanted you to say. So, tits up. ~ Susie Myerson

On this minicast episode I chat briefly about summer self-care and the TV show "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."

I chat about the main character, Midge Maisel, who defies traditional gender roles and pursues a career in comedy.

Question, why do women pretend to be less than they are to fit into stereotypical molds? I use a quote from the show that wraps this up in an amazing way.

I also offer a wish for you this summer, that includes self-compassion, optimism, and being bold, and I challenge you to apply at least one of these wishes to your summer.

Tune in for a thoughtful share on summer self-care and the relatability of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" to women in the workplace.

  • Utilizing the out-of-office email message to the max! This is especially crucial in a college campus setting, where students and members of the campus community may rely on information only you can provide,

“Don't limit your challenges - challenge your limits.” ~ Unknown

Today I'll be sharing my thoughts on the topic of "Supernatural Anticipation" in the role of an executive assistant.

With over 10 years as an executive assistant, I dive into the unspoken expectation of anticipating the needs of the executives or teams one supports.

I provide insightful advice on not being a mind reader, suggesting to look at things from a 30,000-foot level and maintaining a 360-degree perspective on tasks.

Additionally, I'll address the issue of personal errands and its impact on an EA's professional role.

As usual, offering my honest and sassy approach, providing a fresh perspective for executive assistants navigating the challenges of the workplace.
