This month, Brad is joined by Sarah Marthaller, mother to Hanah Marthaller! Sarah was born and raised in a family of hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. Growing up, she went on many backpacking trips, winter camps, and leadership programs and has passed along her passion for the outdoors and hunting, along with her husband’s, to their four daughters who all participate in shooting sports and hunting upland game bird, waterfowl, and big game. When her daughters were young, Sarah worked from home raising game birds such as pheasants, chukars, quail, and Merriam turkeys. You may recognize Sarah at some of Alberta Conservation Association events like Waterfowl Warmup or the Taber Pheasant Festival mentoring or educating new hunters through the Report A Poacher program. For a year and a half, Sarah has worked for Alberta Hunter Education Instructors’ Association (AHEIA). Through AHEIA, Sarah has had the pleasure of being part of the great programs they provide to Albertans that are designed to mentor new hunters, shooters, and archers but also bring awareness of the Alberta wildlife and wildness. Doug is a lifelong hunter, keen fly fisher, and leads the wildlife program for Alberta Conservation Association. He oversees the delivery of more than two dozen wildlife projects including many with a focus on upland gamebirds. In the past he has spent time guiding in BC for sheep and goats, working in East Africa as the coordinator for a rural capacity building program, as well as pushing cows and driving tractor in northern Alberta. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta and a master’s degree from the University of York (UK). Doug hunts a variety of game birds each fall with grey partridge, sharp-tailed grouse, and snipe gaining most of his attention. He also writes in the outdoor field with articles on wing shooting, flyfishing, conservation, and the hunting ethos. He lives in the Crowsnest Pass area of southwestern Alberta. Daryl is an avid outdoorsman who was born in Alberta and has lived here his whole life. Growing up in rural Alberta he has hunted most of his life, with waterfowl being his passion. In the fall when Daryl is not hunting with his son Ron, he gives his time to helping others get involved in hunting and the outdoors. He volunteers as a mentor with the Delta Waterfowl Parkland Pintails, whose mission is to get people outdoors who have never done it before, through their various programs such as the Waterfowl 101. Daryl has now passed on his passion to his 14-year-old son Ron who was once a participant in the Waterfowl 101 program himself. Ron has since become the youngest member of the Parkland Pintails volunteer group and has recently won an “outstanding volunteer” award with the chapter. At the recent annual Parkland Pintails fundraising dinner, the group recognized his efforts, contributions, stewardship to conservation, and involvement in the outdoor world. Daryl and Ron both volunteer their time with Delta Waterfowl. As well, Ron has volunteered with events hosted by Alberta Conservation Association such as the Kids Can Catch event and is always on the lookout for more opportunities where he can lend a hand. While Daryl’s main love is water fowling, Ron has shown interest in all facets of hunting, having shot his first deer when he was 12. He looks forward to the many hunting opportunities that lie ahead. In addition to hunting and harvesting wild proteins, Daryl and Ron love the “after the trigger” moments: They do all their own processing, including complete butchering and making their own sausage.
