Living in New Zealand as a Japanese descendent Brazilian- with Maya Hasegawa (Brazil)
Hi everyone, I want to introduce Maya Hasegawa, who is born in Brazil and has Japanese roots. Maya has been living in New Zealand with her husband and her three sons for around 5 and a half years. She is currently working in a commercial laboratory as a quality officer but has a lot more skills and interests such as being a producer and host of "Kia ora Brazil" (Free FM 89.0). Maya was one of the nominees for 2019 Best Supporting Actress Award by the Academy of Movies. For the past 40 years, she has been passionate about singing, dancing and acting and performed in different shows like "Les Miserable" and "Pride and Prejudice" to just name a few. In New Zealand, Maya was honored to feature in "Urinetown", "We will rock you" and "Chicago". Besides the stage you may see her in some TV commercials, as well as in some episodes of "Shortland street" (TVNZ), "Power Rangers" or "Cold Case".
In this episode we are talking about the challenges you can face in Brazil, challenges of cultural differences and the challenge of getting a resident visa to be able to stay in your new chosen home. We also talk about the pain of missing family and friends and being so far away from your own parents who can't see their grandchildren grow up.
Please welcome with me James Elam from Alaska. He is a teacher for Technology in Cambridge and has a great hobby as a landscape and nature photographer. One of his main features is that he wears shorts no matter what temperature it is.
In this episode we are talking about how challenging it can be to start over at 49 and move to a new country. Find out how James made it all the way from Alaska to New Zealand with a massive fear of flying, to start his new life. Leaving his children, parents and friends behind, knowing he might not be able to see his parents again and still pursuing his dream is beyond brave and inspiring.
I you always wanted to move abroad but you are afraid that you are too old now or that it is too late now, please listen to this episode! :)
Welcome back to todays episode where I am talking about a few differences I have noticed between my home country Germany and New Zealand. It is a short but hopefully informative episode. :)
Please welcome with me Nasim Saeidi, also known as Niki who left Iran with her husband to start a new life in New Zealand. We met at work and started becoming close friends. Niki is very compassionate and loving and is always looking for a way to grow.
She is telling us a little bit about the current situation in Iran, why they chose to move to New Zealand, why everyone should visit the beautiful country Iran one day and how difficult it was to be so far away from her family and having visa restrictions when her parents caught Covid-19.
Please welcome with me Sorina Lloyd. Sorina is a very emotional and emphatic power woman who left South Africa five years ago to start a new life with her husband and her three children here in New Zealand. She has worked many years in leadership positions and is currently a team leader in a commercial laboratory.
We are going to talk about the safety situation in South Africa and how challenging a work day can be. How to stay safe in an unsafe environment, how to keep your children safe and how to deal with cultural differences. Sorina is also telling us about the beauty of South Africa as a country and its beautiful people.
You can feel the love she has for her home country but the fear she has for the safety of her children.
Please Welcome with me Marie Weiss. Marie is currently travelling around the world for 8 months and is collecting new memories, is broadening her mindset and is enjoying her life. We have been in the same high school together and were even in the same year and yet we have not really met each other properly. I am very excited to get to know her more. We both are from a very small town in the north of Germany and now she is here in New Zealand and says "Hello".

Please welcome with me Chelsea Blackstock. Chelsea is born and raised in New Zealand and is still living in her beautiful home country but loves to travel and spent one year abroad in Canada for her studies. Will the wanderlust take her away one day from the beautiful Aotearoa? We will see.
Chelsea and I are talking about her experience of being far away from her family for the first time as a student in Montreal. She explains her main differences between Canada and New Zealand. We will also answer the question if being in a different country by yourself means you are independent? ;)
Loving to be alone does not equal independence! Being alone does not equal being lonely!
Have you ever though about doing a gap year or being an exchange student?

In todays episode I want to talk about the side of living abroad which we usually don't want to talk about. It is an amazing experience and I cherish every second of it but it also has its difficulties and tough times.
I talk about the feeling of loneliness... I talk about how you miss out on achievements and milestones of your family and friends... I talk about how you miss out on new "Hello's" and on "Goodbye's"... I talk about missing out on certain food...
You will loose some people along the way. But this will happen regardless and is part of our life.
I enjoy living in New Zealand and don't regret that I took this chance and made the move nearly 5 years ago. There are so many awesome adventures I have been on, new challenges I have learnt so much from and new people who became good friends over time. BUT there will be times when all you want is a hug from your mom or a comforting conversation face to face with your friends who you know for more than 10 years already.

Melissa is a former journalist and non-profit writer who recently published her first book called "So, you want to move to New Zealand". The importance of community and belonging- with your host
I'd like to share a brief reflection on the theme of community and belonging.
Did you know that the absence of a sense of belonging can evoke feelings similar to physical pain? Conversely, experiencing a sense of belonging can foster happiness and a feeling of security.
Growing up in a tight-knit community, leaving my home sparked a journey to fit in and find a sense of belonging elsewhere.
Community plays a pivotal role in our lives. Despite the value we place on diversity, there's an inherent ease in connecting with individuals who share similar cultural and social backgrounds, as well as comparable life experiences.
In this monologue, I aim to articulate my personal journey and observations regarding the immigrant experience, shedding light on the profound significance of community and the pursuit of belonging.

Jing holds a clear perspective on whether Chinese and Western medicines oppose or complement each other.

Studying in Rome: Exploring culture’s influence on personality- with Theresa Helbano (New Zealand)
Please welcome with me Theresa Helbano from New Zealand. Theresa studied Theology in Rome for three years through Opus Dei and is sharing her insightful experience with us all.
In this episode, we discuss the experiences of Theresa who studied abroad in Rome through Opus Dei, where her faith played a significant role in shaping both her education and decision to study internationally. Although she was in Italy, a large Spanish community in Rome led her to focus on learning Spanish rather than Italian. This diverse cultural environment prompted her to reflect on the differences between traits shaped by culture and those that are intrinsic to one's personality.
She shares insightful examples of cultural contrasts that challenged her expectations, and how interactions with people from various backgrounds offered her profound moments of self-discovery. While she enjoyed Rome for its rich Christian history, her engagement with Italian culture was more limited. Language barriers, even among native English speakers, also emerged as a surprising aspect of her experience, highlighting the nuances of how different cultures express themselves in communication.
A central challenge she faced was learning to accept her own personality and understanding that every type of personality has a valuable role within a community. She came to realize that while it’s natural to admire others, there is no need to change oneself for acceptance—each person brings their own unique contribution.

Can we outrun depression by moving abroad?- with Maria Jenckel (Germany)
Please welcome with me Maria Jenckel from Germany who left her home to move all the way to Australia. Maria has a PhD in Science and due to her international reputation as a scientist she was able to land a great job in Down Under. She is proud to now be a citizen of Australia.
In this episode, I sit down with Maria, who moved to Australia in search of new beginnings and better mental health. We explore her journey with depression and ask the question: "Can you outrun depression by moving abroad?" Maria shares candidly about her early struggles, starting with school bullying and later experiencing burnout at work, which led her to resign. The toll on her mental health included physical symptoms, like stomach issues and intense anxiety.
Her dream of living in Australia came true with a job offer, and for the first few months, her anxiety seemed to vanish. However, as routines set in, so did her familiar struggles—amplified by the isolation of Covid lockdowns. Eventually diagnosed with anxiety disorder and depression, Maria started medication but found transformative relief by embracing running. Through consistent exercise, her mental health improved, and she was able to feel good even without medication, rediscovering joy in hiking, road trips, and exploring Australia.
Maria's answer to our big question? Moving abroad may offer a temporary escape, but the real work needs to be done within. You can't escape depression by changing location alone, but you can begin to outrun it—literally—by putting on those running shoes and taking charge of your health.
If you struggle with your mental health please ask for help! You are not alone!
