Benjamin Ayers is one of the most popular Hallmark leading men with movies like Cranberry Christmas, Long Lost Christmas, and Color My World with Love. But most importantly to us, he is Drew, the inquisitive reporter sidekick of Alex McPherson (Alison Sweeney) on The Chronicle Mysteries.
Ben took some time to sit down and talk with us about what life is like on and off the set and his latest venture, Romance University. One of the most exciting things he shared is that The Chronicle Mysteries is NOT canceled and there are some still discussions of what comes next.
Our fingers are crossed.
We talked for an hour, but it was so interesting it felt like 10 minutes.
The featured cocktail for Benjamin and Romance University is Love Potion Punch.

3oz vodka
2oz Cranberry Juice
1oz Pomegranate Juice
2 lime wedges
Heart Shaped Ice
Romance University Mug!

Sydney and Eric tackle Hallmark's latest mystery, The Jane Mysteries: Inheritance Lost. There were some high notes and some low notes. Plus there were some deep 1960's, 70's and 80's pop culture references. In addition to the movie, we discuss 6th grade dances, pronunciations, and the Spirit Hermes.
Sydney and Eric usually see things pretty similarly, but Carrot Cake Murder: A Hannah Swensen Mystery proved they don't always see eye to eye. Like many fans of the series, our hosts' opinions were split over the latest installment of the sleuthing baker, Hannah Swensen.

But our conversation wasn't just about acting and costumes - we also talked about our favorite ice cream flavors, the importance of Hawaiian pizza, and Hollywood crushes. What if the mysteries we watch on television had a much deeper connection to the classic works of Agatha Christie than we ever imagined? Settle in, dear listeners, as we embark on a journey that takes us from the spookiness of our possibly haunted home, through the British countryside of Mid-Summer Murders, and right to the stylish mysteries of Australia.
We kick things off with the peculiar behavior of our family pet, and the eerie occurrences that have us suggested our house might be haunted. Transitioning from the supernatural to the mundane, we put our weight behind the actors and writers currently on strike, while lambasting the studios for trying to subvert human creativity with AI. As we cross the Atlantic, we immerse ourselves in the charm of British mystery with a deep exploration of the enduring British series, Mid-Summer Murders. We look at its evolution, favorite characters, and the drinks that enhance our viewing pleasure. The journey continues with the popular show Monk, which we find bears a surprising resemblance to Agatha Christie's masterful compositions.
As we head Down Under, we can't help but fall in love with the unique blend of style and mystery that is Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. A comparison with the British mystery shows and Agatha Christie's works, further enriches our discussion. We close out this intriguing episode with a fun quest, as we go on the hunt for the boots worn by Kate Cassidy in the Royal Christmas Crush movie. So join us for a fun, illuminating, and sometimes spooky adventure; a perfect blend of mystery, opinions, humor, and camaraderie.

Ever find yourself wondering if a movie sequel can reignite the magic of the original? Join Eric and Andrea as we dissect the return of "Garage Sale Mystery: Search and Seized." With a plot as clear as murky water, we tackle the unconvincing mystery and debate whether the series still carries its initial charm. While we rate the latest chapter a lukewarm three out of five, we can't deny the comfort in seeing familiar Hallmark faces—and the unexpected joy we find in the series' fashion choices and lovable side characters.
Finally, we're time-traveling—not literally, though that would be handy—to give you our candid take on The Way Home Season 2 and share nostalgic musings about high school life pre-technology. There's a dose of anticipation for the "Gilded Newport Mysteries," as well as a personal connection that makes our discussion about "The Way Home" series more than just another review. So, slide into those detective shoes and join us on this laughter-laced journey through the mysteries that keep us coming back for more.

Step into the lavish world of 1895, as we dissect "Gilded Newport Mysteries: Murder at the Breakers," with our special guest, Eric, who brings a critical eye to the nuances of period piece filmmaking. We grapple with the film's shortcomings, from its pacing to its acting, and how the constraints of a Hallmark budget impact the overall delivery of a historical mystery. While the setting promises a wealth of opulence, the execution leaves us pondering the potential of a different cast and the director's role in shaping young actors' performances within the rushed reality of production schedules.
Navigating through the tangled love quadrangle of "Gilded Newport Mysteries," we ignite a debate over character chemistry and the leap from book pages to the silver screen, especially regarding the female lead's independence. Our discussion isn't just limited to a single title; we traverse the broader expanse of Gilded Age television, comparing fan reactions to shows like HBO Max's "The Gilded Age" and the cozy alternatives like "Miss Fisher's Mysteries." Through this exploration, we uncover recommendations for fellow enthusiasts of period mysteries and consider how historical fidelity resonates with audiences.
Rounding off our episode, we voice our heartfelt concerns about the current direction of a beloved TV show, sharing the personal connections we've formed with its storylines. The episode titled "When You Were Young, the Landry Women" stirs up not only nostalgia but also disappointment in the protagonist's emotional journey and the narrative's depth. As we look to the future, we eagerly anticipate our lively group interview with the Justice Warriors, promising insights and perhaps a bit of chaos, as we continue our quest for complex characters and captivating mysteries within our favorite period pieces.

Crack open a Molson and cozy up by the fire with us as we share stories that showcase the quirks of buying beer up north and the symbolic power of our beloved maple leaf.
Our gathering wouldn't be complete without diving into the gripping world of acting, ranging from the frantic auditions of Hallmark to the intricate dance of on-set chemistry. Our guests peel back the curtain on their most memorable roles, with tales of inclusive moments that define their craft. Hear the intimate connections that form behind the scenes and the surprising fan reactions that shape the journey of characters we've all come to love.
And just before we call it a night, we speculate on the future, with a sneak peek at the projects that have our guests buzzing. Whether it's Nikki's compelling university lectures or Alex's original series, the pipeline is full of excitement. But we keep it real, acknowledging the tightrope walk of managing one's reputation in an industry that's always in the spotlight. So join us for a heartfelt send-off, full of gratitude for the laughs shared and the stories that connect us, Canadian or otherwise.

Set sail with us on a cinematic voyage where bewilderment meets charm aboard the Hallmark Mystery Channel's "The Mystery Cruise." Eric and I are your captains on this reflective journey, navigating the enigmatic waters of a film that mixes chaos with surprise enjoyment. Our candid conversation covers everything from director Ron Oliver's behind-the-scenes revelations to Carol Higgins Clark pulling double duty as writer and actress. By the end of our chat, you'll know why this film deserves more than a footnote in Hallmark's mystery anthology.
We're unpacking the treasure chest of talents in this 2013 mystery, marveling at missed opportunities for potential Hallmark regulars and giving a standing ovation to Gil Grady's accent acrobatics. As we reminisce about the film's nod to a nostalgic hairstylist sleuth series, we can't help but compare the tapestry of older Hallmark transitions to the razor-sharp focus of their current lineup. It's a mix of praise, confusion, and everything in between – it's not just a review, it's an experience you don't want to miss.
So, relax and join us for our light-hearted sign-off from a Hallmark gem that left us ready for more. Eric and I may have been at risk of being metaphorically 'thrown overboard' by "The Mystery Cruise," but we've docked safely and are already anticipating the next port of call in our series. She directed the unresolved cliffhanger in Cut, Color, Murder.
Why does she do this to us sleuthers? Listen and find out!
We sat down and chatted with Stacey N. Harding about these classic Hallmark mysteries as well as some of her rom-com, including Love Classified, Hearts in the Game, and the holiday runaway hit Round and Round.
Last, we discussed her upcoming new Hallmark mystery, Crime Time: Freefall, starring Luke Macfarlane and Lydie Greenwood.
This may be a long episode, but it is packed with great behind-the-scenes stories about some of your favorite Hallmark movies and mysteries.

In this episode, Andrea tries to convince Eric that Aurora Teagarden is not the worst Hallmark mystery by having him watch Til Death Do Us Part. In this episode, while Aurora plans her marriage to Nick, they stumble on a decades-old murder. Of course, Aurora has to solve it.
In addition, we are introduced to Aurora's father, a man seldom talked about and never seen before.
So, was Til Death Do Us Part able to grab Eric's further interest? Were the characters well developed? Was the mystery a quality whodunnit?
After we discussed Aurora Teagarden, we delved into the latest episode of The Way Home. Andrea and Eric have struggled with the basic premise of the second season of this series, as well as the story's pace. Eric also has some choice opinions on the mental health of the characters and the general level of toxicity of the show.
Come along and have a listen; let us know if you have seen these shows and if you agree with our opinions. Or maybe we have inspired you to watch an episode of an old mystery you haven't seen.

Hadley Warner (Greenwood), an experienced crime series actress, comes to a crossroads in her life and career when her television show is canceled. Unsure of her next step in life, she moves her family into the small mountain town of Mystic, Colorado, leaving her Los Angeles lifestyle behind.
To her surprise, she is propelled back into her “old life” when a body seemingly falls from the sky and into her backyard. Hadley unexpectedly decides that with her years of character study and experience playing an on-screen crime investigator, she will help Detective Shawn Caden (Macfarlane) solve the case.
Shawn isn’t initially a fan of her work or help, but he soon realizes Hadley is a fountain of knowledge and can act out of any situation with so much charm that he starts to fall for her.
Andrea and Eric had a blast discussing the latest Hallmark mystery, CrimeTime: Freefall, starring Lyndie Greenwood and Luke Macfarlane.
This mystery had a lot of laughs and introduced us to one of our favorite supporting characters, Bax.
We dissect what worked and what parts we felt fell a little short. But there were definitely more highlights in the whacky mystery.
Then we try to figure out where in the heck The Way Home is headed. The more we watch it, and the more we discuss it, the more we seem to be wavering between being lost and just generally disinterested.

And every Hallmark mystery sleuther has their sidekick.
In this episode, Andrea and Eric share their favorite sidekicks. We both love these secondary characters our top 5 ranking had to be extended to include a bonus sidekick.
Eric's Top 5 6. Baroness Janie - Mystery Island 5. Bax - CrimeTime 4. Delores - Murder She Baked/Hannah Swensen Mysteries 3. Joanna - Darrow and Darrow 2. Nikki - Flower Shop Mysteries 1. Marla - Curious Caterer
Then, we took our weekly dive into the pond and discussed the latest episode of The Way Home. Eric, with the help of some medication, found it to be the best of the second season, while Andrea remained unimpressed.

We had the incredible opportunity to talk with Lisa Hamilton Daly, the EVP of Programming at Hallmark Media, about the launch of the new Mystery Channel and what sleuthers can expect.
You will definitely want to listen to this episode as she gives some VERY big hints of upcoming mysteries, including Signed, Seal, Delivered. There are even some clues to expect in the much-awaited follow-ups to Cut, Color, Murder, Nikki and Nora, as well as Franchesca Quinn.
In addition, she lays out Hallmark's plans to slow down releasing new mysteries and get to making the follow-ups to mysteries like Mystery Island and The Cases of Mystery Lane. She may even have hinted that Travis Burke will appear with Goldy and Tom in Curious Caterer.
This episode is jam-packed with answers we have all wanted to hear.

We wanted to talk to Nikki DeLoach and Megan McNulty, the writing partners who crafted True Justice: Family Ties. But we didn't expect such an open and honest conversation that went so far beyond the world of Hallmark mysteries.
In this authentic and transparent conversation, they candidly shared stories of their friendship, families, careers, and faith. They share some really personal stories but also some of the fun behind the scenes of making some of our favorite Hallmark movies.

Andrea and Eric hit the runways of Paris for this high adventure review of Hallmark's latest mystery, Crimes of Fashion: Killer Clutch. This new mystery features Brooke D'Orsay and Gilles Marini.
An American fashion psychologist, hired to coach a fashion designer, helps a guarded French detective unravel a list of fashionable suspects after a murder happens backstage of a Paris fashion show.
While there was some guarded optimism for this mystery, Andrea and Eric and seemingly most of our Instagram followers enjoyed it.
Then they turned their attention to jumping in the pond for a review of the latest episode of The Way Home. While Andrea thought it was the best of the season, Eric is not so keen.

It is not every day you can talk to a Hallmark trailblazer that has created not one, but two of the most iconic sleuthers in Hallmark History: Hannah Swensen and Alex McPherson (Chronicle Mysteries).
But that is exactly who Alison Sweeney is.
We learned that, unlike most Hallmark talent who are simply cast in their roles, Alison actually creates her characters and stories and pitches them to Hallmark. Her true driving force is her fans, and she makes sure she creates stories that appeal to them.
We, of course, dive into the new Hannah Swensen mystery, One Bad Apple. We chat about the casting of Victor Webster to replace Cameron Mathison, the return or Norman and Andrea, and her first foray into writing a mystery.
And it wouldn't be a Hallmark Mysteries and More podcast if there wasn't at least one big clue to get sleuthers excited.

This movie was unlike any other Hallmark movie. It featured smoking, rampant adultery, and sex jokes. Was this really a Hallmark mystery?
That is the question we tackle in our complete review of After All These Years, released in 2013. This cray movie stars Wendie Malick, Gregory Harison, Martha Burns, and Andrea Martin.
"When a woman is wrongly accused of the death of her ex-husband, she sets out to solve the murder mystery and find the real killer before the day of the funeral, when she is to be taken into custody."
The Hallmark description certainly does not do this comedy that masquerades as a mystery. There is a hijynx and honest-to-goodness laughing-out-loud in this one.

The murder of a supermarket owner puts TV chef Billie Blessings and Detective Ian Jackson on the trail of a possible serial killer while they come to terms with their blossoming romance.
We tackled Morning Show Mysteries: Countdown to Murder in this week's epidode. This was a mystery on which they definitely did not agree. While we both agreed that Holly Robinson Peete is a traffic actor and he supporting cast is fun, The story and mystery are another thing.
Finally, we wrap up with the finale of season two, The Way Home. In this segment, there was very little we agreed on.

Andrea and Eric review Alison Sweeney's writing debut in One Bad Apple: A Hannah Swensen Mystery.
Hannah Swensen has been asked to teach a baking class at the college in town, but her equipment is tampered with, causing an explosion that the fire department ruled an accident. Soon, a colleague ends up dead, and Hannah begins to put together the puzzle of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the murder. Hannah leans on her friends and family to collect the breadcrumbs of foul play and put them together, and meets a different side of law and order when Lake Eden's prosecuting attorney, Chad Norton, enters her life.
In addition to being Alison's first time crafting a story from the Joanne Fluke characters, it also marked the introduction of Victor Webster to the Hannah Swensen franchise.
Was Alison successful in writing her first screenplay? Did Victor Webster soften the blow of Cameron Mathison leaving the series to join GAF?
We answer these questions and a whole lot more.

Today, we review Hilary Dean. 2+2=Murder. Does it equate to a great mystery or does it require a bit more homework to add up?
Andrea and Eric tackle the Hallmark Mystery classic series Hailey Dean Mysteries by diving deep into the fourth episode, 2+2=Murder. And this review is definitely needed based on the description Hallmark gives you: Hailey's niece tells her that her music teacher, the main force behind collecting funds for school repairs, wanted to talk to her as an ex prosecutor. As she's missing, Hailey investigates and finds blood. Police interviews all teachers."

We had the tremendous opportunity to sit down and talk with Hallmark superstar Andrew Walker, the star of 30 Hallmark movies, including the Cruious Caterer mysteries.
We talked about some of his earlier work and, of course, got into how he brings Detective Tom Schultz to life in the Curious Caterer mysteries. We even asked him about the cryptic emoji Instagram posts by him, Paul Campbell, and Tyler Hynes.
While Andrew was amazingly accommodating and talked to us while he was on set filming his Christmas movie, unfortunately, he had to be transported to another location in the later part of our conversation, which resulted in some technical challenges. We tried to clean up the audio as best we could, but it wasn't perfect.

On this week's podcast, Andrea and Eric debated over what Hallmark mystery one-offs that we want to see more of. We always say that even mysteries that we didn't love should get at least three episodes to develop characters and build out the back story that typically just can't be accomplished in one episode.
The mysteries we considered are from 2022 through April 2024, we have not had an official announcement of new episodes coming. These included:
Cut, Color, Murder
Francesca Quinn PI
Nikki and Nora
Family History Mysteries
The Jane Mysteries
The Dancing Detective
Mystery Island
Aurora Teagarden (Prequel)
Haunted Harmony Mysteries
True Justice
Guided Newport Mysteries
CrimeTime
Crimes of Fashion
We had some agreement, some disagreement, and some wildly divergent opinions. Give it a listen, then let us know on Instagram (@hallmarkmysteriesandmore) what mysteries you want more of.

Despite the show airing its last episode in 2009, Peacock brought Mr. Monk and his crew to solve one last case. We reviewed this movie on its own merits as a sleuther mystery and holding its own to the original series.
