The Uptown story starts with its founding in 1986 via a $75,000 deal with MCA for a compilation album and effectively ends with Andre exiting to run Motown Records with a contract worth millions. Jimmy Jenkins, also known as Jimmy Luvs or “JLuvs”, had previously been the Vice President of Uptown Records alongside Andre’ Harrell. Jimmy “Luv” Jenkins – “Andre was the visionary of every record label that came behind us. 

The blueprint was Uptown. Without him, the spirit of the party ain’t go be the same because through any tragedy or anything we always party. That’s how we grieve, that’s how we celebrated, and that’s how we love.”

Jean-Marie Horvat is a 5x Grammy nominated multi-platinum mixer, writer, producer who has worked with some of the biggest artists and producers in music. Starting out as in-house engineer for Teddy Riley, Jean Marie’s mixing credits while working with Teddy included Wreckx-N-Effect, Michael Jackson and Blackstreet.  Jean-Marie went on to work with Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, and producers Stargate, The Neptunes, Polow Da Don, and Timbaland to name a few.

Jean-Marie’s list of hit records is long and includes TI/Justin Timberlake’s "Dead and Gone,” Jessie J’s "Price Tag," Chris Brown's "Say Goodbye,”  J Lo’s "Jenny From The Block," Beyonce/Shakira's duet "Beautiful Liar,” and Destiny’s Child’s  "Say My Name.”  He also co-wrote, produced and mixed the multi-platinum Rae Sremmurd hit “Powerglide."

Jean-Marie’s ability to work across diverse styles has led him to become one of the preeminent mix engineers in the music business today. His most recent credits include The Weeknd, Saweetie, Ty Dolla $ign, Robin Thicke, Ant Cleamons, and the latest album from Trey Songz.

TL Cross is a multifaceted artist whose work is rooted in love and community. A cultural historian, musician, and educator from Queens, New York, he grew up immersed in hip hop and jazz, which shaped his artistic journey. For Woody Rock, his move into the realm of gospel music is not totally surprising. The former member of the hit R&B group Dru Hill received a steady diet of gospel music while growing up in Baltimore, MD, listening to groups like the Winans. Raised in a strict Christian-centered home, Rock wasn't allowed to listen to secular music, but always found himself bobbing his head and tapping his feet to the pulsating grooves delivered through the gospel sounds that engulfed the house.

After only three online “Pass The Mic” episodes, an overwhelming emotional response from viewers, and tens of millions of views, DJ Cassidy partnered with BET for an epic prime time television “Pass The Mic” special which aired immediately following the 2020 Soul Train Awards and attracted more than one million live viewers.  Now, DJ Cassidy has now partnered with BET for a series of six primetime television “Pass The Mic” specials to air throughout 2021.

Gina Thompson began singing at an early age and was signed to her first recording contract with Mercury Records shortly after graduating high school.  Nobody Does It Better was Gina Thompson's first album. Released in 1996, it featured production by Missy Elliott and Diddy, and featured appearances by Elliott, Diddy, and Craig Mack, among others. 

Her first single from the album, "The Things That You Do", was a success, peaking at number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and number 12 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.   Thompson's second album, If You Only Knew, was set to be released on September 21, 1999 on Elektra Records through Missy Elliott's The Goldmind Inc. imprint. 

Two singles were released in advance of the album's anticipated release date: "Ya Di Ya", featuring Elliott, peaked at number 38 on the R&B chart, while "Caught Up", featuring rapper Beanie Sigel, failed to chart. The album was shelved, and Thompson asked to be released from her contract. Brian Alexander Morgan is an American record producer that was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, United States. He was discovered by Club Nouveau founding member Jay King, who got Morgan's group a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1987. When his group's album failed to chart, they were dropped and Morgan was mentored by producer Robert Brookins. Morgan was also labelmates with singer Chanté Moore at Warner Bros., but her album never saw the light of day due to Jay King losing the production deal over the failure of the second Club Nouveau album. Morgan- who had feelings for Moore- penned the song "Weak", which later became a hit for R&B group SWV. He originally intended to use the song for Charlie Wilson. In the early 1990s, Morgan wrote and produced songs for Lalah Hathaway, Martha Wash, and Usher, among others. Outside of R&B, Morgan also worked in house music in the mid 2000s. Around the early 2010s, he was summoned by DJ Khalil to work on a few projects with him. Khalil's desire to work with him caused Morgan to relocate from Sacramento back to Los Angeles. Donnie Simpson (born January 30, 1954) is a longtime American radio DJ as well as a television and movie personality. He hosted The Donnie Simpson Morning Show on Washington, D.C. radio station WPGC-FM from March 1993 to January 29, 2010. Currently, he hosts The Donnie Simpson Show on D.C.-based radio station WMMJ-FM (Majic 102.3 FM), which began airing on August 17, 2015. Simpson is the first urban-format radio personality to have an annual salary over $1 million without being syndicated.   

In 1983, Simpson was recruited by Robert L. Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television BET, to host the network's primetime music video show, Video Soul.  Simpson remained with the show until its cancellation in 1997. 

Over several decades, Simpson has hosted many network specials and tributes. He has interviewed well-known stars, including Stevie Wonder, Prince, Elton John, Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, Janet Jackson, James Brown, Usher, Jay-Z, Notorious BIG, Whitney Houston, Tupac, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Smokey Robinson, and many others. In 2004, Simpson was inducted into the BET Walk of Fame.  

In 2015, he was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame, the only non-musician so honored at that point. On October 29, 2020, Donnie, along with six other honorees, was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in a live two-hour ceremony broadcast live on radio stations across the country.

Five Star (also styled as 5 Star) are a British pop group, formed in 1983 and comprising siblings Stedman, Lorraine, Denise, Doris and Delroy Pearson. Between 1985 and 1988, Five Star had four Top 20 albums and 15 Top 40 singles in the UK, including the Top 10 hits "System Addict" (1986), "Can't Wait Another Minute" (1986), "Find the Time" (1986), "Rain or Shine" (1986), "Stay Out of My Life" (1987) and "The Slightest Touch" (1987).  

They won the 1987 Brit Award for Best British Group.  Doris Pearson, the eldest of the three Pearson sisters, was born in Brent, London. She was the choreographer of the group, teaching the other members of Five Star the dance routines to their hits. She, like the other members, sang backing vocals and wrote songs for Five Star albums.   Her first self-penned song, an uptempo pop track "Don't You Know I Love It", appeared as a b-side to their second UK Top 10 and biggest US Billboard Hot 100 hit, "Can't Wait Another Minute", and later popped up on their multi-million selling 1986 album, Silk And Steel. She also contributed to two consecutive albums, writing one song for each project with brother Delroy: "Knock Twice" from Between The Lines and "Someone's in Love" from Rock the World. 

The latter track was chosen as the lead single for the album in the US and was a top 40 hit on the Hot R&B Singles chart.   Her most notable input to a Five Star project came in 1990 when Doris took lead vocal for the first time on a UK single, "Treat Me Like a Lady" and again on its follow-up "Hot Love". Pearson also wrote and sang a third track "That's the Way I Like It", which followed the usual Five Star song format.  

The final time Doris appeared as lead vocalist for Five Star was on the Heart and Soul project, released in 1995, for which she contributed another three tracks. "I Give, You Give", notably the most upbeat of the three, was released as a single in that year, and reissued in 1996 as a club remix. In 2001, she recorded the track "Get a Life Together" for the Five Star album Eclipse.   #DorisPearson #FiveStar #5Star

But, with all the accomplishments, notoriety, and monetary blessings achieved in the entertainment industry, Lelee still felt empty and unfulfilled.

After realizing the real blessing would be in blessing others through her life experiences and pain, Lelee would dedicate her life bringing awareness to “Teen Pregnancy Prevention”, “Domestic Violence”, and Child Sexual Abuse—all of which she experienced as a young girl. Brian Alexander Morgan is an American record producer that was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, United States. He was discovered by Club Nouveau founding member Jay King, who got Morgan's group a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1987. When his group's album failed to chart, they were dropped and Morgan was mentored by producer Robert Brookins. Morgan was also labelmates with singer Chanté Moore at Warner Bros., but her album never saw the light of day due to Jay King losing the production deal over the failure of the second Club Nouveau album. Morgan- who had feelings for Moore- penned the song "Weak", which later became a hit for R&B group SWV. When Reid and Edmonds relocated to Atlanta in 1989, to form their own company, LaFace Records. The duo was joined by Simmons and together they discovered, signed and produced their own artists such as Toni Braxton, TLC, Usher, Damian Dame and OutKast. In 1991, Simmons co-wrote and co-produced Boyz II Men's most successful song to date, “End of the Road”, from the Eddie Murphy movie, Boomerang. The song garnered a Grammy Award in 1992 for “Best R&B Song”. “End of the Road” topped the charts from August 15 through November 7, 1992, setting a record for most weeks at number one with 13 weeks, beating Elvis Presley's 11-week hold with "Hound Dog" and "Don't Be Cruel". Presley's record had stood 36 years.  

Simmons, Edmonds and Reid collaborated again with Whitney Houston on The Bodyguard soundtrack (since 1990's album "I'm Your Baby Tonight"), which went on to sell more than 45 million albums worldwide. The trio also worked with Michael Jackson on his Dangerous album. Although the trio’s songs didn’t make it into the album's final cut, Simmons enjoyed working with Jackson and deems it an “amazing experience”.

Karyn White is known for several hit singles including "Superwoman" (1988), "Secret Rendezvous" (1989), "The Way You Love Me" (1988), and the US Hot 100 No. 1 single "Romantic" (1991). The Darkchild instinctively knows how to showcase the best attributes of each artist that he works with. CEO of his Darkchild Productions, Inc., Jerkins has been responsible, through his numerous hit productions, for over 170 million in record sales worldwide.  Born the youngest son of a minister father and choir director mother in Pleasantville, New Jersey in 1977, Jerkins began taking classical piano lessons as a child and combined that with the gospel music that he heard in church. Rodney's God‐given gifts quickly blossomed, as the young phenomenon diligently worked on his music and began recording demos for local talent.  When New Jack Swing's Teddy Riley came across one of those early demos and opened the first door, Rodney's career took off like a rocket. 

Subsequently, his first professional writing and producing job came in 1994, for an artist named Casserine and at the tender age of 15, he and his brother, Fred Jerkins III, wrote and produced his gospel rap album, "On The Move." Since that time and continuously into present day, the Jerkins discography reads like a Who's Who of Hit Music.  In 1997, Jerkins continued his ascent to legend status by working with Mary J. Blige; he co‐wrote, arranged and produced five songs for her four‐time platinum CD, "Share My World," including the hit single "I Can Love You." That year, Billboard magazine touted him as one of the hottest R&B producers in the country, and again bestowed that moniker on him in 1999. He re‐teamed with Blige in 2006, with his production of her huge hit, "Enough Cryin," from her record‐setting CD, "The Breakthrough."   

Rodney's 2006 production of Beyoncé’s Number One smash "Deja Vu," dominated the airwaves and garnered him another Grammy nod in the process. A testament to its greatness and his genius, the perennial, memorable tune was highlighted during Beyoncé’s 2008 Grammy Awards telecast performance.  Happily married to Lifestyle Music artist, Joy Enriquez, Rodney is also the father of four children, Rodney David Jerkins III, Heavenly Joy, Hannah Joy and Royal David Jerkins in Los Angeles. Jerkins also produced her latest Contemporary Christian album and debut of his Christian label, Lifestyle Music, titled “The Call” in partnership with Capitol Christian. He says "this is what the world needs right now, and we are happy to be the ones that God is using to deliver it."   

A devout Christian with strong moral values, Rodney has not forgotten his roots in the church, nor does he compromise in order to conform to today's music landscape; instead, he consistently uses his myriad talents to shape ground-breaking music on his own terms.

Kathy Sledge is an American singer–songwriter and producer. Sledge is best known as the youngest and founding member of Sister Sledge, an American vocal group which is made up of her sisters that formed in 1971. After achieving success beginning the late–1970s thru the mid–1980s with Sister Sledge, Sledge embarked on her solo career in 1989. She has had several hits on the International Pop and Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, including "Take Me Back to Love Again", which hit #1 in 1992. Sister Sledge is an American musical vocal group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formed in 1971, the group consisted of sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim, and Kathy Sledge. The siblings achieved international success at the height of the disco era. In 1979, they released their breakthrough album We Are Family, which peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and included the 1979 US top-10 singles "He's the Greatest Dancer" and "We Are Family". Kameelah Williams, aka Meelah, is a singer and song writer who got her start as the lead singer of the famous Motown 90's trio: "702". 702 consisted of Williams and sisters LeMisha and Irish Grinstead, all of who were students at the Las Vegas Academy of Performing Arts. The restructured group was christened 702, which is Las Vegas' area code, and was now ready to record their first album. The group's first album was entitled: "No Doubt" and soared to #1 on the charts. Missy Elliott co-wrote & produced four songs on the album including the smash hit single "Steelo" and its remix. The album spawned three hit singles: "Steelo", "All I Want" and "Get It Together". Gina Thompson began singing at an early age and was signed to her first recording contract with Mercury Records shortly after graduating high school.  Nobody Does It Better was Gina Thompson's first album. Released in 1996, it featured production by Missy Elliott and Diddy, and featured appearances by Elliott, Diddy, and Craig Mack, among others.

Her first single from the album, "The Things That You Do", was a success, peaking at number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and number 12 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.   Thompson's second album, If You Only Knew, was set to be released on September 21, 1999 on Elektra Records through Missy Elliott's The Goldmind Inc. imprint.

Two singles were released in advance of the album's anticipated release date: "Ya Di Ya", featuring Elliott, peaked at number 38 on the R&B chart, while "Caught Up", featuring rapper Beanie Sigel, failed to chart. The album was shelved, and Thompson asked to be released from her contract. The group is most notable for a series of number-one R&B hits, including popular cover versions of the songs "All I Do Is Think of You" and "Sweet November", originally performed by musical acts The Jackson 5 and The Deele, respectively. The road to success hasn’t been easy, but after 20 or more years in the music industry, Angel Sessions has proven she is in it to stay. Angel started out early on as an R&B recording artist. Before her first deal with Pittmobile/Ichiban records and Volt Records, Angel was traveling to Guam, performing at the Grammy’s pre-party’s in Los Angeles, and performing at the same venue with acts such as The Whispers, H-Town, Teena Marie, James Brown, Eric Benet and many more. She performed also on many local Television stations in the Bay Area and was interviewed on local radio programs shows. Angel Sessions writes all of her own lyrics. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve always wrote songs of love to my heavenly Father. In 1992, Lelee became the visionary behind the 3x platinum,  Grammy-nominated supergroup we know today as Sisters With Voices (SWV). Along with her group members, Cheryl “Coko” Gamble,and Tamara “Taj” George, the trio went on to sell almost 30 million records to date, with songs like: "Weak", "Right Here", and  "I'm So Into You" just to name a few. But, with all the accomplishments, notoriety, and monetary blessings achieved in the entertainment industry, Lelee still felt empty and unfulfilled.

After realizing the real blessing would be in blessing others through her life experiences and pain, Lelee would dedicate her life bringing awareness to “Teen Pregnancy Prevention”, “Domestic Violence”, and Child Sexual Abuse—all of which she experienced as a young girl. Born in Columbus, Georgia, where he started playing guitar and drums at the age of 12, Walter “Mucho” Scott’s big break came in 1988 when opening up for Guy in Columbus Georgia. As a member of The Basic Black Band, Mucho and his fellow band members were asked by Gene Griffin to travel to New York to play behind the R&B group, Today, who was on tour with Teddy Riley and Guy. Basic Black, an integral part of the New Jack Swing era, soon after recorded a single on the Sounds of New York label, and was later picked up by Motown Records, where Mucho served as a songwriter and producer, in addition to being a vocalist and musician in the band. Basic Black had hits such as “Special Kind of Fool” and “She’s Mine” which garnered huge airplay in the early 1990s.   

Basic Black was later dismantled, with its members pursuing various musical projects, and Mucho moved to Virginia Beach to join forces with Teddy Riley, where he produced hits for MC Lyte, Blackstreet, Guy, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, SWV, Big Bub, Gerald Levert, Amerie, and the incomparable Michael Jackson. Mucho has been called the “King of Remixes,” with remixes for Patti LaBelle and Keith Sweat, in addition to the artists above. 

While in Virginia, Mucho also wrote and produced songs for his new group, 911, where he served as one of the groups vocalists.  Over the years, Mucho has continued to write and produce hit music in Atlanta, and is now releasing his electrifying single, “Mary” which has garnered musical acclaim in the Pop genre.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is an American hip hop group consisting of rappers Bizzy Bone, Wish Bone, Layzie Bone, Krayzie Bone, and Flesh-n-Bone. The group was signed to Ruthless Records in late 1993, when they debuted with their EP Creepin on ah Come Up. The EP included their breakout hit single "Thuggish Ruggish Bone".

R&B starts Woody Rock formerly of Dru Hill and Jacci McGhee share their experiences as recording artists in the Music Industry.  Jacci McGhee: Best known for her belted out duet with Keith Sweat on the hit song of the 1980s, “Make It Last Forever,” Jacci has returned, from a self-admitted dark place, to her passion and gift of singing. Actually, Jacci began her reappearance on the music scene in 2015 with step out vocals alongside Dominique, on DJ Jay Salter’s international EDM hit, “Angel of Mine” (Soul Remix).   Jacci’s music career was spawned by her duet with Sweat on the R&B chart-topper “Make It Last Forever”  and lead vocals on Salt-N-Pepa’s hit “Expression.” Immediately afterwards, she was signed to MCA, now Geffen Records, releasing a top 10 R&B single, “It Hurts Me.”  With corporate shake-ups, she got lost in the fray. Woody Rock: Dru Hill is an American R&B group mostly popular during the 1990s, whose repertoire included soul, hip hop soul and gospel music. The group was founded in Baltimore in 1992 and is still active. Dru Hill recorded seven Top 40 hits, and is best known for the R&B #1 hits "In My Bed", "Never Make a Promise", and "How Deep Is Your Love".   The original members were lead singer Mark "Sisqó" Andrews, Tamir "Nokio" Ruffin, Larry "Jazz" Anthony and James "Woody Rock" Green. Riff is an American R&B group from Paterson, New Jersey. The group RIFF appeared in the 1989 biographical-drama film, Lean on Me starring Morgan Freeman as the 'Songbirds' in the bathroom scene. They recorded two albums in the 90s. Three of the members (Anthony Fuller, Dwayne Jones, and Michael Best) joined Men of Vizion but have since returned and the group has re-formed with two new members. They are still performing and making songs

American Music Award Winner, Donell Jones is a renowned R&B vocalist, an exceptional songwriter, and a master producer.  For over the last 25 years, the multifaceted Chicago native has experienced greatness and adversity during his musical journey as well as he’s been signed to LaFace Records, has had many chart-topping hits, including unforgettable classic ballads that are fan favorites like “Where I Wanna Be,” “You Know What’s Up ft. Founded by group member Michael Keith and groomed by Sean “Puffy” Combs, the Atlanta based group 112, had a meteoric rise that solidified them as the hottest R&B group of their time. Their debut, album “112” (1996) went double Platinum, and gave us hit records like “Cupid” and “Only You”, which featured memorable features from the late, great Notorious B.I.G while also introducing us to then newcomer on the scene, and Bad Boy label mate, Mase.  

Proving that lightening can in fact be caught in the bottle, the group quickly followed up their debut with yet another double Platinum offering. “Room 112” dropped just two years later and featured records like “Come See Me” and “Anywhere”  The Grammy-winners were declared victorious on VERZUZ scorecards from both Billboard.com and Revolt.tv after the legendary group went head-to-head with Jagged Edge in a Memorial Day edition of the music battle.  Playing cuts that included five number one Billboard hits to a live crowd of nearly 400 thousand fans, the group gave a teaser listen of their newest single "Spend It All" to raving responses. Garnering over 6.5 million media impressions following the battle, the pair were noted for their comedic and competitive spirit. 

While social distancing halted their robust 2020 concert schedule, the group has been performing to sold out crowds for the last two years, and the new releases will mark the follow up to their 2018 single, "Tonight."  

The Billboard chart-topping group will release their first album since the 2018 split, 112 FOREVER EP on August 28, 2020.  The legacy continues for 112 as Mike and Slim embark on a quest to achieve their ultimate dream: receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and cementing their place in music history.

When Reid and Edmonds relocated to Atlanta in 1989, to form their own company, LaFace Records. The duo was joined by Simmons and together they discovered, signed and produced their own artists such as Toni Braxton, TLC, Usher, Damian Dame and OutKast. In 1991, Simmons co-wrote and co-produced Boyz II Men's most successful song to date, “End of the Road”, from the Eddie Murphy movie, Boomerang. 

The song garnered a Grammy Award in 1992 for “Best R&B Song”. “End of the Road” topped the charts from August 15 through November 7, 1992, setting a record for most weeks at number one with 13 weeks, beating Elvis Presley's 11-week hold with "Hound Dog" and "Don't Be Cruel". Presley's record had stood 36 years.

Formed in Cleveland, Ohio in  1984, LeVert was a dominant force on the music charts and created a successful blueprint for urban male groups. The trio’s formula of combining soulful ballads and up-tempo beats with catchy hooks produced a dynamic catalog of music to be enjoyed for many years to come.   The original group was comprised of Marc Gordon, Gerald and Sean Levert.  

The trio hit popular mainstay through urban radio delivering a string of HOT records such as “I Get Hot”, “Bloodline”, “The Big Throwdown”, “Just Coolin”, “Rope a Dope Style”, For Real Tho” and “Whole Scenario”. Damion Hall, also known as Damion "Crazy Legs" Hall is an American R&B singer. He is a member of the new jack swing group Guy and is the brother of Guy member, Aaron Hall. He has released one solo album, Straight to the Point in 1994, which spawned one single, "Satisfy You", featuring Chanté Moore. That song managed to reach No. 48 on the Billboard R&B charts.

Joyce Elizabeth Sims-Sandiford (August 6, 1959 – October 13, 2022) was an American singer and songwriter, whose biggest hit single, "Come into My Life", reached the top 10 in both the US Billboard R&B Chart and the UK Singles Chart in 1987/8.  In 1986, Sims signed with the now-defunct record label Sleeping Bag Records. Her first hit single was "(You Are My) All and All" in 1986, which was produced by Kurtis Mantronik and reached No. 16 on the UK Singles Chart. It entered the US Dance Chart at #51; peaking at No. 6.  Sims followed up in 1988 with "Come into My Life" also produced by Kurtis Mantronik which peaked at No. 10 on the US Billboard R&B Chart and No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart. This became her biggest success, although it was her only top-10 single on the R&B chart. Both "All and All" and her remake of "Love Makes a Woman" with Jimmy Castor were also chart entries. 

Sims' debut album, Come into My Life, reached No. 22 in the US R&B album chart and No. 5 in the UK Albums Chart following the Top 10 success of the title track in the UK Singles Chart. All songs on the album were written by Sims except for "Love Makes a Woman". Sims' second album, All About Love, was released in 1989 and reached No. 64 in the UK Albums Chart.

In 2014, Sims released the album Love Song, which includes a duet with reggae vocalist Maxi Priest.  Sims' music can be heard on the soundtrack of the film Species, and her songs have been recorded or sampled by Randy Crawford, Angie Stone, and Snoop Dogg. Sims released "Wishing You Were Here" on her own record label, August Rose Records, and another album, Back in Love Again.

Sybil Lynch, known simply as Sybil, is an American R&B and pop singer–songwriter. Sybil gained notable success in her career with songs during the mid-1980s into the mid-1990s. She is the cousin of former En Vogue singer Maxine Jones.  Sybil signed to Next Plateau Records in the United States (with a licensing deal with Champion Records in the United Kingdom) and began recording in 1986 with the release of her first single "Falling in Love". 

The record reached the top 30 on the Dance charts and began a successful career for Sybil, releasing her debut album Let Yourself Go a year later, which was a minor hit.  Sybil achieved worldwide crossover hits with her cover versions of Dionne Warwick's hits "Don't Make Me Over" and "Walk On By", which were released in 1989 and 1990, respectively. 

The former became Sybil's biggest hit in the US, peaking at 20, and was a 1 hit in New Zealand. "Walk On By" is still, to date, the highest charting position for this Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic in the UK, peaking at 6 closely followed by Gabrielle (7). Sybil's self-titled second album became her biggest-selling album in the US. She signed with PWL Records for the UK market for this album, where it was titled Walk On By. Sybil would be signed to PWL Records until 1998.

Gina Thompson began singing at an early age and was signed to her first recording contract with Mercury Records shortly after graduating high school.  Nobody Does It Better was Gina Thompson's first album. Released in 1996, it featured production by Missy Elliott and Diddy, and featured appearances by Elliott, Diddy, and Craig Mack, among others.

Her first single from the album, "The Things That You Do", was a success, peaking at number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and number 12 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.   Thompson's second album, If You Only Knew, was set to be released on September 21, 1999 on Elektra Records through Missy Elliott's The Goldmind Inc. imprint.

Two singles were released in advance of the album's anticipated release date: "Ya Di Ya", featuring Elliott, peaked at number 38 on the R&B chart, while "Caught Up", featuring rapper Beanie Sigel, failed to chart. The album was shelved, and Thompson asked to be released from her contract. Naughty by Nature is an American hip hop trio from East Orange, New Jersey consisting of Treach, Vin Rock and DJ Kay Gee.  The group formed in East Orange, New Jersey, in 1986 as The New Style. The group first appeared on the music scene in 1989, releasing an album called Independent Leaders, and the album generated the minor hit "Scuffin' Those Knees". 

After the release of their first album, the group was mentored by fellow New Jersey native Queen Latifah and subsequently changed their name.

Heavy D & the Boyz, is a group which included dancers/background vocalists G-Whiz (Glen Parrish), "Trouble" T. Roy (Troy Dixon), and DJ and producer Eddie F (born Edward Ferrell). The group maintained a sizable audience in the United States through most of the 1990s. 

The five albums the group released were produced by Teddy Riley, Marley Marl, DJ Premier, his cousin Pete Rock, and Eddie F. Myers also released four solo albums and discovered Soul for Real and Monifah.  

Heavy D & the Boyz were the first group signed to Uptown Records, with Heavy D as the frontman and only rapper. Eddie F was his business partner in the group, DJ, and one of the producers. 

The other two members, T-Roy and G-Wiz were the dancers. Their debut, Living Large, was released in 1987. The album was a commercial success; Big Tyme was a breakthrough that included four hits. "Trouble T. Roy" died at age 22 in a fall on July 15, 1990, in Indianapolis. Dixon's death led to a tribute on the follow-up platinum album, Peaceful Journey. Pete Rock & CL Smooth created a tribute to Trouble T. Roy called "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" which is regarded as a hip hop classic
