07 Feb 2022DHT & ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA ~ W/ Adeeba Aqeel00:34:25

DHT & ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA

Adeeba Aqeel loves helping people, she is a self care and personal development blogger, and also works as a liaison for a University, helping foreign & international students settle in.

She enjoys helping people achieve their dreams and stresses that work isn't everything, encouraging people to set goals in all aspects of their lives.

Adeeba started to notice her hair thinning when she was a teenager, which had a large effect on her confidence, and she struggled to find answers as to why this was happening.

Eventually, she was diagnosed with having a sensitivity to Dihydrotestosterone, the androgen hormone, which was likely set off due to the changes in hormones around puberty.

Topical treatments were not effective, as this condition causes the hair follicle to shrink and eventually miniaturise.

She practices self love and acceptance, which has helped her to love herself more regardless of her hair.

Alopecia Areata ~ How reducing stress is important in combating hair loss
'Permission to do nothing'

Denise Ferguson specialises in Property Law, mentoring salon businesses, negotiating salon leases and helping to deal with any conflicts or problems in salons.

Denise used to work for the NHS, but realised, when she had to raise the rent on a Salon who fitted wigs for cancer patients, that she was working for the wrong side! She now enjoys working with and supporting salon owners, giving them more confidence and knowledge.

She first experienced hair loss at 18 years old.
We talk about how she first noticed bald patches in her hair, but didn't get it checked out as she was living on her own, and was embarrassed and ashamed to ask for help.

Denise describes how when her hair started to grow back, it was a completely different texture!

We explore how stress can trigger patches of alopecia to start to appear, and how this can be a warning sign to look at stress levels and slow down.

04 Apr 2022Losing hair after cancer treatment ~ finding your 'new normal'.00:40:53

Losing hair after cancer treatment ~ finding your 'new normal'.

Ania Kasprzak shares her story of her ten month long fight with triple negative breast cancer- one of the most aggressive types!
And yet despite this, and her previous heart attack, or maybe because of these, she believes in the power of positive energy and community.
She says that following her cancer treatment, one of the most emotionally difficult moments for her was when her hair started to come out in handfuls.

She describes her experience with no hair as a mainly positive one, with people being nicer to her, and sharing their own stories with her. She didn't feel that wigs were for her, and so she went around bald or sometimes wore a hat, if it was cold!

We explore how beating cancer can feel like just the beginning, and how there can be a huge journey of recovery after, where life is slightly different and you have to find a new routine, including filling your time which was taken up with hours and hours of treatment.

She also talks about how waiting for her hair to grow back in was torturously slow and a very emotional time for her.

Whilst looking for something positive to fill her time, she took a stained glass course with Kent Adult Education. She took inspiration from the stained glass windows of her childhood catholic church, and started making angels, using recycled materials to help create them.
She finds this therapeutic, and in this way is managing to touch the hearts of many and spread her positivity and love.

11 Apr 2022PTSD induced hair loss ~ The road to recovery01:04:37

PTSD induced hair loss ~ The road to recovery

Julie Wilcox-Jones had just moved to South Africa when her house burnt down in a fire storm that wiped out over 700 homes over three days.
Her and her family lost everything. She was in shock and afterwards she had panic attacks, and didn't want to go out and socialise.

As her life slowly started to return to normal, she noticed that her hair began to come out in handfuls, her hairline was receding and her scalp was becoming visible. Losing her hair really knocked her confidence.

She has a background in clinical trials for medicines related to gut health, and believes that our gut health and diet have a huge impact on our hair health as well as our overall health.

Following her traumatic experience, she started to take collagen, as recommended by her hairdresser at the time, who had kindly invited victims of the fire to come to the salon to get their hair washed and blowdried.

She describes her recovery as being like a phoenix rising from the fire, as a new, stronger person.

Telogen Effluvium ~ Why you shouldn't blame yourself for hair loss.

Bente Jakobsen has had a series of devastating events in the last five years, but despite her many ordeals, she says that losing her hair was one of the most devastating experiences of her life.
In 2017 she was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive breast cancer and had a double mastectomy. She lost her hair during chemo, but it grew back again.
She then lost her mum due to medical negligence
6 months later her dad committed suicide
6 months after that, she got divorced, and one month ago they found cancer again and she had a hysterectomy.

Despite all this, she met the love of her life and is due to get married, and just as she found happiness, she started to lose her hair!

Her hair was shedding drastically and showering was a traumatic experience.
She describes how she learned to love herself and change her mindset to be mentally supportive of herself instead of being hard on herself.

She shares how once she started to talk about her hair loss, she found that she was not alone and wants to share her story to normalise female hair loss and help others.

09 May 2022How hair loss can affect your body image00:49:21

How hair loss can affect your body image

This episode explores how body image can be affected by changes in your hair, and why it's important to seek help from a professional as early as possible.

Sarah Grant is an image consultant and NLP practitioner.
She has worked with cancer charity look good feel better, to help and support ladies going through treatment.
She helps people find their best colours when shopping for clothes, and identifies their wardrobe personality, but she says its not always about the clothes. Your internal dialogue can be just as influential on the way you perceive your body. Internal conflicts and limiting beliefs can impact your confidence for years.

We look at how hair colour and texture can change as you age, along with skin tone and complexion. Many ladies experience fine or thinning hair, especially as they get older.
Just as you may change your hair colour slightly with the changing of the seasons, you might need to think about changing your hair colour, and the colours that you wear, depending on the season of your life.

30 May 2022Why hairdressers make great Trichologists00:49:52

Why hairdressers make great Trichologists

Wil Fleeson has been a hairdresser for three decades, and is now on the board of directors for Rainbow rooms international.

After attending a hair show, he became aware of Trichocare and felt that learning Trichology would give him the knowledge to meet his clients' problems. He found that as his clients aged alongside himself, their needs and concerns changed.

He thinks that having a background in hairdressing is an advantage for trichologists and loves the balance between the emotional clinic sessions and the upbeat days in the salon.

He outlines the importance for hairdressers and trichologists to have a network of specialists to refer clients to, including mental health workers and nutritionists, , so that they can work together to create a good outcome.

06 Jun 2022Pilomatrixoma ~ why you should get that lump on your scalp checked!00:35:00

Pilomatrixoma ~ why you should get that lump on your scalp checked!

Sarah Brooks shares her experience of being told she had skin cancer after developing a tumour on her scalp, which originated from a hair follicle.

Sarah first noticed  she had a problem with her scalp when it became so tender that the cold wind was causing her pain and discomfort!

She didn't really know where to go for help, but her GP referred her to a dermatologist, who made her feel like she was to blame, and gave her a shock diagnosis on the spot!
He took a biopsy and it was sent off for analysis, and she went home on her own, stunned.

She describes feeling abandoned and lonely after her diagnosis and after surgery, with no real follow up or aftercare advice.

It only occurred to her afterwards that her experience could have been very different and may have had a very serious outcome.

She advises anyone with any suspicious growths or lumps on the scalp to go and seek help now, and not to wait.
Pilomatrixoma, or pilomatricoma, is a benign skin tumour derived from the hair matrix, often found on the scalp or neck. They can turn into pilomatrix carcinoma, which are malignant. So it is important to get it checked out.

SMP ~ When a career change leads you to enhance people's lives

Will Quaye began doing scalp micropigmentation in 2019, and has completed a foundation course in Trichology.

He loves how low maintenance and user friendly the treatment is, combined with seeing how his clients have increased in confidence and are happier.
He describes some people who come to see him as desperately suffering, and how amazing it is that something that could be deemed as cosmetic can make such a difference.

He offers a personal level of service, and says every scalp and every treatment is unique.

We also discuss how you can persuade clients to promote and share your work when you are offering a very personal and private treatment.

27 Jun 2022Life after chemotherapy ~ When and how is it safe to colour my hair?00:48:03

Life after chemotherapy ~ When and how is it safe to colour my hair?

Raoul Perfitt shares his knowledge and expertise on what cancer treatment does to the hair, and the best advice for those wanting to return to colouring their hair after their treatment.

We discuss how to proceed cautiously and safely when introducing anyone who has had cancer or illness back to colour. We also look at using professional techniques to create great results using safer options.

Organic colour systems was borne following the need for a safer hair colour with less chemicals, organic ingredients, no animal products or animal testing.
They noticed that colour technicians who use the products day in, day out, were becoming allergic to hair colour. So much so that they were having to abandon their careers.

Approved by the NHS and the British Trichology Association, they have created a safer product, not just for clients but for the hairdressers that use them too.
A safer product means a less chemical working environment. This enabled those with allergies or health issues to be able to return to industry again.
It also gives salons an option for those clients that have health issues and need a gentler option.

11 Jul 2022Hair transplants and scalp micropigmentation ~ how they can be used together00:29:04

Hair transplants and scalp micropigmentation ~ how they can be used together

Caitlin James has a background as a beauty therapist.
She expanded into medical beauty options and started to work alongside a hair transplant surgeon as a transplant assistant.

She first became aware of Scalp micropigmentation  at a conference in Alaska; it wasn't common in Australia at the time.

And so
SMP Australia was set up  7 years ago.

Caitlin realised the potential for SMP to work hand- in- hand with transplant surgery to camouflage scarring, add density to transplanted areas and also work to minimise any scarring on the donor sites, especially if they have been over harvested.

She also finds that as clients age, they may find that hair systems or wigs can be limiting for their lifestyle and also start to look unnatural, and SMP can then help people transition to a more natural option.

15 Aug 2022Alopecia Universalis ~ What it's like to lose every hair on your body00:33:29

When Candace Christina turned 42 years old, after a mild case of COVID, she began to notice bald spots one month later. She also started to shed hair rapidly, and was finding it all over the house!
She then began to lose more and more hair, and was then diagnosed with alopecia universalis. She says that losing her hair was very traumatic, and the beginning of a huge journey for her to be more intentional and to embrace joy.

She created a documentary, sharing her hair loss journey. Being so open about her hair loss is difficult for her as she is usually a very private person, but she hopes that this will help and support others.

She describes how this experience has led her back to joy, and embracing the positive, fun side of life, including spending better time with her kids. She is determined to make her healing journey a positive experience.

She encourages anyone experiencing hair loss to make room for the new version of you; work out what makes you happy and do more of it!

Dealing with cancer and hair loss ~ My New Hair W/ Trevor Sorbie

Trevor Sorbie MBE joins me this week to talk about the My New Hair charity, working with clients who may be experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatments such as chemotherapy.

He has worked with L'Oreal for the last 15 years, their longest running seminar, teaching over 1,000 hairdressers how to cut and fit wigs and how to care for cancer patients.

We talk about his career that spans over four decades, after he found that he had a natural talent for hair.

Trevor shares information around the course, and how he has dealt with clients who have experienced cancer, including working at a hospice.

Information is key, and knowing where to go when you need help, or who to refer a client to, is key.

29 Aug 2022How Hairdressers can better support clients with hair loss00:43:19

How Hairdressers can better support clients with hair loss

Louise Howard-Long set up her own salon at 24, and thought that she was an understanding hairdresser, who could help support her clients through problems such as hair loss.
That is, until she experienced hair loss herself!

She describes her experience with two simultaneous alopecia conditions as one that affected her wellbeing, her sense of self  and caused her to lose her sense of perspective.

She took to Instagram and created videos documenting what was happening to her, and got a really positive response. She even took time off work to come to terms with her hair loss.

She is now passionate about supporting her clients in more ways if they suffer from hair loss, giving them more options and adding more information to their website about products and techniques that can help them to disguise and manage their condition.

Why business education is just as important as being a great hairdresser

Antony Whitaker has been hairdressing since 1978. He has trained with the best and owned three successful salons and had his own training schools.

He now puts his wealth of knowledge and experience to good use as a salon business coach after finding that stylists on his hairdressing courses were just as keen to learn about their business as they were their craft.

Many hairdressers are creative people, who don't have any formal business training or qualifications. Creative people often see the business side of a salon as boring.
But Antony is here to explain how business can be just as creative, and how it is an ever-changing entity in itself, constantly growing and evolving.

He also hosts the 'Grow your salon business' Podcast.

How many everyday medications could have an effect your hair

Araz Nelson from combed education has been a hairstylist for over two decades, starting her career when she was just 15.

She has carried out months of research on the effects of different medications on the hair, the side effects that can be experienced, and how this can produce unstable - sometimes terrifying - results when using chemical treatments such as hair colour!
We discuss how minerals and medications are excreted from the body, including inhabiting the hair. The Contraceptive pill, aspirin, thyroid medication, blood pressure treatment, to name a few, can all have different negative effects on the hair.

She shares the benefits of her experience through her own education brand, including her podcast, to help inspire and develop others, as she knows how much learning has enabled her to grow professionally and also personally.

Araz believes that you can always learn more, and you can gain from those around you, such as our clients, who can be an untapped resource! Education and knowledge should be sought out to ensure you excel in your career and enjoy what you do.

Medically induced hair loss ~ How some small, achievable steps can make a big impact.

Lesley Hoad shares her real-life story on her hair loss following her cancer diagnosis and treatment.

As a hairdresser and an educator, she felt more pressure when her hair began to fall out, as if she 'should' have all the answers. She describes not feeling like herself as she began to lose not only her hair but her teeth aswell.

She describes the small, realistic changes that she has been able to implement to lessen the impact of cancer on her life and her body, helping her to regain her sense of self.

As a self-confessed workaholic, she shares how she would have chemotherapy on her lunch break and then return to work! And how the experience has actually helped her to learn to slow down, listen to her body and make the necessary adjustments to improve her health and recovery.

Lesley is an inspiration with her positivity and selfless approach to life. She feels that by not letting it get the better of her, and keeping up with normal life as much as possible, it has helped her work through her depression and fight for her recovery.

14 Nov 2022How to handle those difficult conversations around wigs and hair loss ~ With My New Hair Charity00:48:10

How to handle those difficult conversations around wigs and hair loss.

Ann Fox and Joanne Atkinson both join me for this touching discussion around their incredible work with the My New Hair charity.

Ann's Mum died of lung cancer when she was 18, and this spurred her on to work in nursing.
Similarly Joanne has spent 35 years in cancer care and has a PHD in end of life care after a friend died of leukaemia.

They were shocked to find that although they strive to give their patients the best possible care, the aftercare they received when it came to procuring a wig was severely lacking.

The ladies decided to get involved in the L'Oreal My New Hair programme, along with Trevor Sorbie, to help educate hairdressers in how best to help cancer patients get a better standard of care and service.
They have produced a toolkit to help patients to get a suitable wig and be able to have it fitted and customised.

You can contact the charity for leaflets, resources, templates and information for fundraising and support.

Is your business sustainable? How you can recycle 95% of your salon waste!

JC Aucamp has spent 25 years in the hairdressing industry.
He was shocked to realise that the local council made no provisions to recycle any of the Salon's hairdressing waste.
He began to measure how much waste the business was producing and decided to develop his own solution.

JC is now the founder of the Salon Sustainability Club, enabling salons to recycle 95% of all the waste they create.
They work to support everyone in the industry from freelancers to large salons.
We discuss some simple ideas to help begin your recycling journey, and how to get the clients involved too.

Almost all waste products can be recycled, including hair, which is compostable, but can emit greenhouse gasses when sent to landfill.
They recycle 2 1/2 to 3 tonnes of foil every two months!

Salon Sustainability works to support the HABB & Enham Trust Charities.

What is the cold cap and how is it used during Chemotherapy?

Julia Smith was shocked when she was diagnosed with Paget's disease, a form of breast cancer, despite her having no lumps on her breasts.

She had surgery to remove one of her nipples, which she thought would be the end of her treatment, but then found she had to have chemotherapy as her cancer was hormone receptive.

After much deliberation, she decided to try the cold cap during chemotherapy to try to minimise her hair loss from the treatment.

She describes her experience, what she has learned and how it works.

Alopecia Universalis at 17 ~ Why it's important to find connections

Frank Cornine, 38, has been living with alopecia since he was 17 and in High School, when within 6 months he experienced a total loss of hair from his whole body!

He describes his visit to the dermatologist to get help as quite cold and not very compassionate, saying his initial patches of hair loss may get better, or they may get worse.
The uncertainty of whether his hair would all fall out or return was difficult to deal with.

He describes losing a part of his identity, how he no longer looked like his family members and actually admits he had an Identity Crisis because of not looking like himself.

High School and College were difficult; he didn't know anyone with alopecia and didn't have anyone he could talk to who understood what he was going through.

He has now set up his own podcast, Alopecia Connection to help people going through hair loss realise they are not alone.

12 Dec 2022Should all hair salons cater for Afro Textured hair?00:39:46

Should all hair salons cater for Afro Textured hair?

Karen Roberts lives in Bromley, UK. She is the owner of Mintwave Radio and the host of 'A coffee with Karen' podcast.

She is mixed race, with Afro Textured hair.
She was adopted by two white parents, and lived in Tunbridge Wells in Kent, where there was very little diversity, and they didn't really know how to handle her hair type.
Support for adoptive families at that time was minimal, and none of the local salons were capable of working with Afro Textured hair.

She found herself as a teenager learning how to braid her hair herself, and getting a train into London to visit a specialist salon.

We discuss whether salons should endeavour to offer services for Afro Textured hair, or whether it is better for some salons to specialise.

Karen talks about how unsolicited comments on her hair affected her self esteem and the damage this can do.

Your vibe attracts your tribe ~ How to create the best outcome for 2023

Jennifer Louise is the Salon Marketing coach.

She believes that the way you start your day is up to you- how do you talk to yourself? Are you grateful for what you have?

We discuss how attitude affects your progress, and how we can get the best from our clients and business in 2023.

Jennifer left school at 14, recognising that the education system didn't work for her. She began working in a salon and ended up negotiating with her head teacher a way to work towards her NVQ in hairdressing alongside her GCSEs!

By 24 she owned her own salon, but spent ten years learning important lessons in business along the way.

She believes it is important to get clear on who you serve and base your business and culture around your ideal client.

Does alopecia affect beard growth? ~ How to promote a healthy beard

Tudor Tanase,  known as The Hairloss Dude, began to take an interest in hair loss when he wanted to improve his beard growth at 18.

He started to use minoxidil, but found that he experienced negative side effects. As he began to develop the signs of male pattern hair loss, he began to apply the solution to his scalp and the same issues arose, causing dandruff, dry skin and irritation.

He then began to look into the formulation of the different products and the ingredients these products contained.

We discuss how genetic hair loss happens, what is the cause, and how can you access accurate information on effective treatments to prevent unnecessary spending on products and treatments that don't work.
Tudor shares tips on how to promote healthy beard growth, and we explore how Dihydrotestosterone affects hair growth and beard growth in different ways.

He shares his knowledge on product formulations and ingredients to aid the metabolism and absorption of products, and describes how there is a huge difference in the quality and performance of a product depending on the amount and quality of the ingredients and the manufacturing processes.

Tudor notes the lack of innovation in the field by the major brands and how using  experienced factories for production is important especially for higher strength formulas.

06 Feb 2023Using JAK inhibitors to treat alopecia areata01:06:59

Using JAK inhibitors to treat alopecia areata

Tommy Hall began experiencing hair loss in November 2021, and within four weeks, he has lost around 70% of hair over his entire body.

He has no idea what had caused his hair loss, and found that there was no cover from the NHS to help him with treatment.

He went to the dermatologist and was given a diagnosis of alopecia areata, which was a relief and a shock.

Tommy began researching treatment options, and happened upon a Facebook group where some members had been using JAK inhibitors to treat their hairloss, a relatively new treatment using drugs that were originally designed to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

He is now coming to terms with this new treatment regime, and that he may be living with alopecia his whole life.
We look at how to find affordable treatment, the side effects and dealing with the unknown.

Tommy describes how he feels empowered by his ambition and strength to find a solution to his condition, and he is happy to be able to help others on their journey and share his progress.

20 Feb 2023How can salons work to support trans clients00:53:33

How can salons work to support trans clients

Mac McGregor is 57, and is a trans activist and educator

Growing up, he had zero exposure to the LGBTQ+ community, but from a very early age found that he didn't identify as a girl.

They got into martial arts, which allowed him to have an outlet to be more masculine and also to see more of the world.
Due to the regulations of the sport, Mac waited until his martial arts career ended before medically transitioning at the age of 42.

Once he began this journey, he started to look for queer- friendly salons that would welcome him and understand his needs.

Mac shares how there is a high rate of suicide in young LGBTQ people due to isolation, and there is a need for more mentors in the trans community.
He invites people to look at social conditioning and question what serves you and what doesn't.

27 Feb 2023Curl Daddy ~ Helping men embrace their natural hair texture00:36:45

Curl Daddy ~ Helping men embrace their natural hair texture

Edwin Borquez is the founder of Curl Daddy products.

His Caribbean heritage has given him very curly hair and a great look which led to a career in modelling. This was a confusing time, as some people would tell him to  tame his curls to help blend in to get more work, and some would advise him to embrace his textured hair for a more different look.

He has had to learn to style and handle his hair after chemically straightening it and damaging it to 'fit in'.

When looking for products for his hair, he struggled to find any that he could identify with. He also wanted something with more natural ingredients, as he didn't want to use products every day containing chemicals that would be absorbed through his skin.
This led him to create a range of products with a natural formulation that were easy to use and apply, with hair & scalp health as the focus.

06 Mar 2023The importance of eyebrows ~ When alopecia affects your facial hair00:39:42

The importance of eyebrows ~ when alopecia affects your facial hair

Jason Berndt was a fighter pilot in the military until recently, when he sete up 'My Two Brows'.

He believes that the stress of the military training and studying an engineering degree have contributed to his alopecia.

His first experience of hair loss was alopecia areata patches at around 8 years old.
Then at 19, at military college, he noticed it again, and the hair on his right eyebrow began to disappear, along with his eyelashes.
Eventually, he had lost so much hair he had to shave it off, which he describes as a traumatic experience.

He has looked into various treatments, but really found options for men to disguise what is happening pretty limited. It was difficult to find a solution that didn't draw attention to himself or look unnatural.

In the end, he came across temporary eyebrow tattoos, but there were not a lot of options or choice, so Jason began to make his own!
He now produces many different colours, styles and sizes. These help not only those with hair loss but also conditions such as trichotillomania too.

We look at the different ingredients, what they do and how to read and understand the labels on your hair products.

How your relationship with your hair affects your relationship with yourself

Hannah Bradley, the Curly Confidante, is a hair coach who helps people not only manage their hair, but to explore their relationship with their hair, and describes how this can have an impact on your whole relationship with yourself.

Having been  bullied in primary school, Hannah has experienced having low self- esteem, sharing that it knocked her confidence and made her not like her hair.
She began to straighten her hair or tie it back so as to try to 'fit in' and not draw attention to herself.

She fully understands the impact of a bad hair day, and we discuss how the way we feel about our hair can be just as damaging as picking at any aspect of our body in the mirror every day.
We have so many beauty standards that we are expected to conform to, and Hannah advocates for us to listen to our inner voice, doing things because they feel good, and not because you feel you 'should'.

We look at how your relationship with yourself can affect your relationship with your hair, and how you need to be kind to yourself and put yourself first.

Hannah says: Be your own best friend & advocate, don't let the harshest criticism come from within!

How hair loss made me a better Hairdresser

Jessica Young has been in the Hair industry for 16 years, and thought that she knew enough about the hair & scalp to advise and help her clients; That is, until she began to experience extreme hair shedding herself!
She then realised that there was a lot more that she could learn, and tells how her own journey has made her be able to support her clients so much better too.

As a busy mum, when she first noticed her hair loss, she didn't really take any action, and now realises that she was on the verge of burnout, with low iron, migraines, body shakes and brittle, poor quality hair.

We discuss how hair loss can be a sign of other issues such as deficiencies in the bodies that should not be ignored, and where to go to get effective help.

Jess says that her experience has changed her approach to client consultations, and has made her a better hairdresser as a result.

15 May 2023The benefits of an apprenticeship in the Hair Industry00:46:08

The benefits of an apprenticeship in the Hair Industry

Sarah Abel from TNB skills training joins me to talk about the importance of apprenticeships within the Hairdressing industry and the benefits of the programmes.

Sarah has been in the industry since she was 13! She returned to hair & beauty at 38, learned nails, and took over a business. She realised that there was a gap in the market for nail training apprenticeships.

She has had to often defend the industry against the common misconception that hairdressing or any vocational courses are not a pathway to a lucrative career, and the negative connotations that these are only for students who are not suitable for A-level courses or University.
Sarah has the stats to prove that actually these jobs can be just as high earning if not more!

We discuss the benefits of an apprenticeship programme, and what the future may hold for the industry.

Her academy has grown since 2008, and she has worked hard to find ways to work with employers to make sure both them and their trainees are well supported.

How you can create your own product range

Karen Agnes created K2A skincare in 2016, with the aim to produce a range that contained bespoke ingredients that resonated with the brand, her values, and a holistic approach to beauty treatments.

She looked at the whole holistic approach when it comes to using and buying products, and this range was made with selected ingredients, how they all work together and how they can enhance the whole customer experience.

We discuss how to set up your own range of products, how easy it is to do, the pitfalls and legal considerations, along with all the steps involved.

What are the advantages of having your own products?

Karen also speaks about the importance of choosing to work with people who are in alignment with your brand values and vision.
Along with the products, Karen has built some personalised rituals and application techniques to make sure that the salons who use them stand apart from others in their area, giving them a point of difference, and how this can build loyalty for you and the brand.

Tom Holmes describes his hair loss journey as a rollercoaster.

After having cervical fusion surgery, he was left unable to eat or drink whilst in recovery and quickly lost 30lbs. He then began to lose his hair rapidly.

He shares his story with us, his recovery and then further bouts of extreme shedding. He has correlated these episodes to periods of sudden weight loss. Every time he loses hair he finds it just as painful as the first.

He was so self conscious that he wore hats everywhere, even to dinner out and to a  wedding! Because he didn't want to answer questions around his hair loss and found it upsetting when people assumed he had cancer.

31 Jul 2023Why I had to choose my hair over my acting career W/ Shalita Grant00:56:42

Why I had to choose my hair over my acting career W/ Shalita Grant

An actress since High School, Tony- nominated Shalita grant publicly quit a popular long standing Television show after suffering from traction alopecia, thinning hair and breakage in front of an audience of millions.
Holywood's tendency to ignore the needs of actors with textured hair meant that Shalita faced daily hair practices and techniques that caused severe long term damage to her own hair. The producers did not understand or provide for the complex needs of her hair and this put limitations on her career.

She also faced backlash and trolling online when she tried to wear a wig to minimise further damage to her own hair. At the time, she could see no other option than to quit the show.

After overcoming her own obstacles, she created the Four Naturals treatment to renew, restore and rebuild her hair, which is now in the best condition and more manageable than its ever been.
This meant that her public and traumatic hair experience has not had to lead to her abandoning acting or hiding her hair forever. She chose to heal, both inside and out, and is now finding ways to be able to be on set with her own natural hair.

Chelcey discusses if the use of sunscreen is a contributing factor, what perifollicular inflammation and scaling are, and what they look like, how to tell if the condition is active or in remission, and how to formulate and effective treatment plan.

Chelcey is also a guest speaker at the World Trichology Congress, and has created her own scale of measurement to determine the amount of perifollicular inflammation.

How can you get exposure and attract potential clients

Sarah Yorke opened her own salon at just 23 years old! 7 years later and the salon felt more like a prison than a blessing.

She decided to move to Manchester to follow her heart, and found herself in the position of trying to find a new hairdresser herself.
She also needed to build a new clientele and wanted to get her work seen by as many people as possible.

Sarah knew that entering a random salon in her local area was a risk, and wanted to create a way to find out what the stylists were like within the salons, and what their work looked like, being able to see what they specialise in and their education and experience.

She created the Stylebook Directory, meaning you can search for exactly what you want and find the stylist perfect for your needs.
Following this, she also created Stylebook Education, for students and educators to look for employment, staff, and for them to showcase their work or look for models.

When should you consult a dermatologist for help?

Dr Elle de Moll is a Connecticut- based dermatologist who is in support of the Global Healthy Living Foundation's non-profit campaign, the Health, Education + Reliable Outreach + Empathetic Support, which has been created by, with and for stylists, salons & barber shops to equip stylists to support their clients with skin & scalp conditions.

Dr Elle discusses why it is a benefit to everyone for stylists and therapists to be able to help to address any skin & scalp concerns their clients may be facing.

We talk about new & emerging treatment options, how medicines are getting more targeted & precise, and how she has studied new treatments for melanomas, using the immune system to help fight cancer.

We discuss how to recognise skin cancer and the signs to look for, inequalities and why people of colour are less likely to visit a dermatologist for help. They also may experience undertreatment of chronic conditions. Dr Elle also challenges the misconception that only fair-skinned people can get skin cancer, and how someone may have a genetic pre-disposition.

She urges anyone who is concerned to seek help, and doesn't like to see anyone being preyed upon by unethical marketing companies.

04 Dec 2023How colitis related hair loss led to a career in wigs00:38:23

How colitis related hair loss led to a career in wigs

Hediye Garcia has a background in hair, and was on the path to studying to be an educator when she began to experience hair loss.

She was simultaneously suffering from Alopecia Areata and Telogen Effluvium, which she originally put down to stress, but further investigation showed deficiencies in folic acid and iron.
Hediye was puzzled as to how she could have become anaemic when she follows a very healthy Mediterranean style diet, and after tests she was told she had colitis, which meant her body wasn't absorbing nutrients from food effectively.

She describes her hair loss, along with her diagnosis of colitis very mentally challenging, and she had to try to put her condition into perspective and focus on being grateful, not letting it consume her days.

This all led her to begin to take an interest in wigs and hair systems, and she even made her own wig!

She now offers hair extensions, wigs & toppers in Ashford, Kent. She shares her knowledge and information.

08 Jan 2024Does sugar have an impact on hair loss?00:43:02

David Barreto began to notice is hair thinning at the age of just 20, and by the time he was 22, this had began to be quite noticeable.

He tried various treatments, but did not see any markable improvement. This led him to look into genetic hair loss, where he found that there has been a lot of research done that hadn't been put into use in commercial products. He wanted to bridge the gap between science and commercial products.

He wanted to create products that used natural solutions, adding compounds found in nature, rather than chemicals or synthetic drugs to treat hair loss, as he found that compliance can be an issue with some medical alternatives, along with the health warnings and side effects putting people off or making them a non- viable option.

He then began to create System K11, a science-led company, of which he is co-founder.

Looking at  the driving forces behind genetic hair loss, he found studies that showed a correlation to the rate of hair loss and diet, researching into sugary drinks and type 2 diabetes as examples of how a dysregulated metabolism can have an effect on the mitochondrial rate of respiration which limits the amount of energy the hair follicles gain from the glycogen stores around the hair follicles.

How to look after your hair & scalp in winter

Jill Lee, a hairstylist of 25 years, qualified as a trichologist with USTI over a year ago.
Trichologists are not very commonly known in America, and she loves being able to help her clients on a deeper level.

Jill tells all on how winter can have an impact on the hair  & scalp - what does it need?
We discuss how you might want to change or add to your product range to help to give moisture and nourish the hair. Is winter shedding real or a myth?

We also look at the different scalp conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff and dry scalp- how do we tell the difference?
Jill states that scaly conditions not properly looked after can become breeding grounds for fungus and yeast, and the practices that can make these worse. We look at cleansing and exfoliating the scalp as well as the face and skin.

What do you need to add or include in your hair & scalp care regimen to get the best from your hair this season?

Why consistent habits and the right advice are paramount to regaining healthy hair.

Karis is 35 and lives in Kent. She began experiencing issues with her hair three years ago, when she had noticeable shedding which led to visible thinning.

She describes her life at the time as very stressful and difficult, a relationship breaking down and facing many challenges led to her not taking care of herself as well as she could have.  She began to notice a large amount of hair in her brush and in the shower.
She investigated all the possible causes of her hair loss including traction alopecia and chemical/ heat damage.

Karis stresses the importance of using good quality products, and recognises their value. She believes that consistency is key when it comes to hair health.
Her hair was her crown, and losing that has had an impact on her confidence.

She says 'you can't put a price on the right advice' as we talk about being able to access and interpret information such as blood tests to accurately determine any deficiencies she has. Sharing this information with Karis meant we could look at the many different supplements she had bought, versus what she actually needed to make a difference.

We look at everything she had put in place to restore her hair to its former glory.

12 Feb 2024Why your mindset is so important00:51:54

Why your mindset is so important

Belinda Hillman says she is very aware of what it is like to feel 'less than', describing herself as a bit of a lost teen who was living in a bedsit at the age of just 16.

The hairdressing industry helped her to turn her life around, going from a council estate to working on a cruise ship and travelling the world. She then went on to own a salon, but felt that she needed more help with her own mental health so as not to feel isolated.

She then created the brand Belinda Mindset, where she encourages people to focus on what they are good at. She provides education through her HABIA accredited mindset course, sharing that she likes to leave a lasting impression on her learners and add value by paying attention to the small details. Her aim is to inspire people, even if it is just for one moment in time.

She has created six different packs of cards to provide guidance for motivation and mindset.

Belinda is currently a part of the VTCT collective tour, and is also offering education for Wella professionals.

19 Feb 2024Persistent Chemotherapy Induced Alopecia00:50:47

Persistent Chemotherapy Induced Alopecia

Jo had chemotherapy and radiotherapy in 2017, following breast cancer. She has had a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy, which plunged her into medically induced menopause.

She also lost her hair due to the treatment. She had been advised that this would probably happen, but was given the impression that it would grow back. She was not really given any information or advice regarding the cold cap, and after treatment, her hair didn't really start to grow back.

Jo sought help from her doctors, dermatologist and even a trichologist. She tried minoxidil, which yielded no results, and eventually was advised that her hair follicles seemed damaged, and after seven years, her hair has never fully grown back.
It wasn't until she spoke to a scalp cooling expert that she heard the term Persistent Chemotherapy Induced Alopecia, and found out how common it is.

Jo set up her instagram account 'Titless Wonder' to help to spread awareness around breast cancer, the options available, and the reality of the possible side effects of treatment, such as PCIA. She is determined to ensure that people know all the information to be able to make a fully informed decision on their treatment plan.

He has a background in hairdressing, hair replacement services, products and education, which eventually led to him training in trichology.

His aim is to create a better future for Trichologists, patients, and the Institute. He was spurred on to take the position as chair because of the faith that his peers had in him to put him forward for the role.

Neil has made many changes within the last few years, and the Institute is now part of the Professional Standards Authority, and the Institute has moved location to Harley Street.

We discuss the changes that have been made, along with some other interesting aspects of the industry including becoming an expert witness and what this entails, along with being involved in product formulation and substantiating any claims they make.

Alopecia Areata Incognita, Epidermolysis Bullosa Simplex & Pili Torti

Lottie lives in West Yorkshire. She has a rare skin condition called epidermolysis bullosa simplex, which she has had since childhood, which had a big impact on her life. Then just as that started to improve, at the age of 14 she developed alopecia areata incognita. She also has pili torti.

She began working in the hair loss industry when she was asked to take over Verve hair loss salon in 2020, where she used to be a client. The owner wanted to choose someone to hand the business over to who had experience of hair loss and also an interest in business. She now runs the salon with her mum.

Lottie is also now studying with the institute of Trichology, where she is enjoying learning more about her conditions within her course.

We discuss her conditions, what they are and how they impact her day to day life, how she has dealt with her alopecia and the strategies she has employed such as psychotherapy.

She also shares her decision to change from a fitted hair system to wearing wigs, to give her more choice and freedom, and how her Instagram account has helped her come to terms with being hair free.

From experiencing alopecia to opening a leading online trichology clinic

Claire suffered from alopecia areata at 27, which she puts down to stress. She lost over 90% of her hair in a matter of weeks. She describes the feeling of shame she felt, which led her to develop an alcohol addiction.

She has now recovered, but this condition led her to study trichology and spurred her on to opening her own clinic. Due to COVID, she began seeing patients online, and this became so popular that she now has a team of scalp experts working with her and can consult with upto 40 patients a week!

Trua now has over 53,000 followers on Instagram where she regularly shares tips & tricks, and debunks old myths around hair loss.

Hair loss provision on the NHS

Dr Archana Rao is a dermatologist with an interest in perimenopause, menopause and hair and skin disorders.
She trained in India and retrained in the UK, specialising in biological treatments.

She runs a trichology clinic within Kingston Hospital, where she has worked hard to establish that hair loss is a medical need, not just a cosmetic one. She now has a waiting list of around 18 months, proving that there is a huge demand for her expertise.

Dr Rao has presented at the World Trichology conference in London, and regularly lectures GP's, sharing with them education around trichology and the importance of treating hair loss as a significant concern.

Can we reverse going grey? Interesting cases from New York

Penny James is the only board certified Trichologist in New York City.
She has been a hairstylist for years, and, after experiencing hair loss herself studied trichology. Now she combines Beauty and Science within her atelier.

She finds awareness a struggle, as not enough people know what a trichologist is, and she wants it to become more well known, as long as campaigning for regulation within the industry.

Penny has seen some very unusual cases, which she shares with us today.
She presented these at the World Trichology Conference in London, which she says was the highlight of her career!

We look at the possibility of temporary greying, and how it may be triggered by a stressful event. Hair pigmentation could be used to  show past life events by being monitored and measured.
Penny describes how the pineal gland can be a variable in hair growth and colour, and that mitochondria can lay dormant and then restart.
