Prolific and pedagogical composer, sound and game designer Joonas Turner joins Tom to chat about working on both sound design and music simultaneously — informing the player through sound, how metal is relatively easy to work with, and how to glean feedback on audio from critics even if it’s not explicitly mentioned.

22 May 2023GXM #5: Zelda Tears of the Kingdom X Ludomusicology (ft. Tim Summers) 00:57:50

What makes the music of The Legend of Zelda series so special? Why do we have melodies like “Zelda’s Lullaby” stuck in our head decades after first playing? And, with the music of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom deviating from earlier Zelda games, what effect does this have on players?

Our guest is Tim Summers, lecturer in music at Royal Holloway, University of London, who has literally written a book on the music of The Legend of Zelda (Ocarina of Time: A Game Music Companion.) We discuss the musical minimalism of the latest Zelda duology, the influence of Debussy and Ravel, and the music theory underpinning your favourite Zelda tunes.

04 Jul 2023GXM #8: DedecoVGMDJ: Video game soundtracks are a treasure trove of electronic music00:55:30

Brazillian producer and DJ Dedeco has been playing video games all of his life, but it was the crowd’s response to hearing music from Persona 3 and Ridge Racer in his live DJ set that inspired him to create a YouTube channel dedicated to VGM remixes and DJ sets.

He chats to us about how the resurgence of Jungle and D&B is fuelling a growing interest in old-school game soundtracks; which genres of club music are best represented in games; and why his upcoming PS2 mix is his biggest yet.

08 May 2024GXM #25: Should film and TV adaptations of video games like Fallout use the same music?01:20:01

How much should film and TV adaptations of video game franchises honour the source material? And how closely related should the music be between original and adaptation? The success of Amazon’s Fallout TV series, which was viewed by more than 65 million people within two weeks of launching, is the latest game adaptation to win over both fans and newcomers alike. But would it still feel like Fallout without those familiar radio songs and nods to Inon Zur’s award-winning score?

05 Jun 2023GXM #6: Varying up music genres in video games, with Chase Bethea00:58:38

There’s a growing list of indie game soundtracks pulling inspiration from a myriad of musical directions. Creative leads on games sometimes bring their own musical ideas, or trust in commissioned composers to set the direction. Hopefully, it’s a creative collaboration based on trust — to find what’s best for the game.

We chat to composer Chase Bethea about his journey into VGM via classical piano, college and Game Boy mini-games; staying afloat on the freelance high seas; the trials and tribulations of winning projects and developers' trust; and pushing for the use of lesser trodden music genres in soundtracks.

We’ve reached episode 20! Hooray! And we can’t think of a better way to celebrate another 10 episodes in the bag than by inviting back IGN’s creative strategy lead and VGM expert, Anthony Agnello, for GXM’s Alternative Video Game Music Awards.

In the absence of a news section for this episode, expect laughs, tears, and mountains of video game music trivia. We hope you discover something new to listen to, and shout-out to all of the amazing musicians that made 2023 a banner year for game music.

11 Mar 2025GXM #40: Aaron Hamel of Materia Collective & Ship to Shore on his monstrous 46LP Castlevania vinyl set00:44:14

We're uncoupling our industry interviews from our more chatty, news-centred shows to get podcast episodes to you faster while making sure news pieces remain topical.

This episode, Tom interviews Aaron Hamel, Label Director at Materia Music, a video game record label, music publisher and rights administrator.

Aaron is perhaps best known as the co-founder of the video game record label Ship to Shore Phonograph Co., which built an enviable reputation for its historical and contemporary soundtrack releases, including Mother 2 (AKA Earthbound) and Celeste.

They chat about the absolutely monstrous vinyl box set announced by Materia — a 46LP collection covering every game in the Castlevania series up to 2010 — by far the biggest video game vinyl release to date and it might be one of the biggest soundtrack (or just general vinyl) releases ever.

27 Mar 2023GXM #1: Why we’re launching a new video game music podcast00:49:20

Hi! We're GXM (Games X Music), a new fortnightly podcast exploring video game music and the intersection of video games and the music industry.

The show is co-hosted by Tom Quillfeldt, a freelancer, game music fan and community manager and A&R at Laced Records; and Mat Ombler, a freelance journalist specialising in video game music.

In this debut episode of GXM, we introduce ourselves and how we hope to carve ourselves a niche among the many games, music, and game music podcasts. We get into what makes us curious about this area, a bit about our backgrounds, and the breadth of the topics we hope to cover in future.

tl;dl We’re looking to be as open-minded about the term ‘video game music’ as possible, since it isn’t one thing: it’s not a genre in and of itself; it involves many more people than just game composers; and we’re interested in everything adjacent, including sync licensing, VGM concerts, the covers/arrangements scene, VGM on radio, soundtracks on vinyl, commercial music artists creating interactive experiences, and much more.

18 Jul 2023GXM #9: Are we in the middle of a rhythm game revival? 01:08:42

At one time, Aerosmith was making more money from Guitar Hero than from their album royalties, but plastic instrument music games were eventually booed off stage. It wasn’t all doom and gloom for music games though: the genre saw innovation in recent years thanks to titles such as Crypt of the Necrodancer, Thumper, BeatStar, Beat Saber (which we forgot to mention!), Hi-Fi Rush, Metal: Hellsinger, and many more. Is this a revival of sorts? What’s next for the genre? And how will developers continue to innovate?

29 Sep 2024[Special] How Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Shaped Music Culture ft Scott Pease [ex-Neversoft]00:35:55

When Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was released on the PlayStation 25 years ago today, no one could have known the impact it would have on not just skate culture, but music culture too.

What started as low expectations for an extreme skateboarding game went on to become one of the best-selling video game franchises at the time, with estimated sales of more than 30 million.

In an era where there was no YouTube and no Spotify, the soundtracks in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games introduced a generation of young and impressionable kids to ska, punk-rock, rap, hip-hop, heavy metal and hardcore, while catapulting the careers of bands that featured in those soundtracks such as Goldfinger and Suicide Machine.

To celebrate the epic milestone of the series, we're joined by Scott Pease, who spent 15 years at Neversoft as Studio Development Director, overseeing the development of nine THPS games.

We talk about Pease's epic career journey, the foundations of the THPS series, the relationship between music and skate culture, and how the series' soundtracks shaped the music tastes of an entire generation.

14 Aug 2024GXM #32: The music design of Disneyland and similarities with video game music00:51:33

Tom explores how music is ‘implemented’ in Disneyland Paris and finds several ways in which it is similar to adaptive video game music, high-intensity arcade games, and how too much music can be oppressive. Like the virtual spaces found in games, Disneyland is a carefully designed, highly artificial space, and it’s obvious there’s a guiding hand directing the musical experience.
