The Graphic Artist
00:30:26
WELCOME TO SEASON 2!
For Gwen's first episode as a 9 year old she interviews super cool Graphic Artist Paul Farrell, whose bold, colourful, geometric style of work you may recognise from seeing his prints or build sets in galleries and arty shops, or from his books, or perhaps some of the work he has done for clients. She puts his designer knowledge to the test and they have a lovely chat about what it is really like working all day on his designs, and most importantly what is Paul's tea-break biscuit of choice?
This year Paul is releasing a new childrens' book all about a mouse called Mauricette. Check out his instagram or website to see lots of his lovely images.
Shout out to Belle, Pauls' daughter who is also 9! We especially hope that you enjoy listening.

Gwen met the Makeup Artist earlier this year, when she was lucky enough to take part in some filming on location in Kent. It was a chilly day by the coast, and Jessica was on hand with her trusty kit to tone down those rosy cheeks. Gwen, of course, thought this was thrilling and so she asked Jess to come on the podcast to explain what else she gets up to at work - whether on location, on set, or hand at an event. We hope you enjoy it!

Mother's Day Special! Gwen talks to her Mum about what she really does all day while Gwen is at school.
She learns that there is more to her Mum's job than she realised, and that being a Mum is a proper actual job too.
If you are lucky enough to have each other and be together, why don't you ask your Mum what she does all day when you aren't with her, whether that is a paid job or being a brilliant full-time Mummy! You might be surprised!
We also hope everyone enjoys hearing all about the world of print publishing and selling art online.
A lot of young people want to work in the art world, and it can be hard to make that happen. Gwen's Mum chose to give up her dream of being a painter to find a job that paid her a salary and it took a long time to find her way back to the industry she loved. We hope that this episode gives other creatives some hope and inspiration. Things don't always go the way you planned; but with a few twists and turns, an open mind, and a bit of luck, you might just end up doing something else you love!

Can you imagine playing your favourite game EVERY DAY? Even better, if you got really good at it, making all your money from it? It's a risky business, but Leo the Poker Player has done just that, playing at professional tournaments and travelling the world to do what he truly loves.
He isn't so keen on all the sitting down his job involves, so when Gwen called him he was out walking his dog in the sunshine. We hope you enjoy learning about this most peculiar profession!

Sara's company helps museums and art collectors to move art and objects - including very big, fragile, or precious things - around from one location to another, in the UK and to other countries all over the world. They ensure things are parcelled up properly, stored safely, installed in their new locations, taken apart and put back together accurately. The even make sure that when they get to customs (passport control for objects) they have all the right paperwork. And they've been doing it since 1885! If you want to find out more, there are lots of case studies and videos on their website: Constantine: Fine art logistics for private collectors, museums & galleries
It sounds like a pretty serious job. Fortunately Sara really, really loves it. We hope you love hearing all about it too!

What does cardboard have to do with making coffee?? Gwen’s friend Holly has a Dad with a really important job: without people like him there might not be any chocolate in the shops! Imagine!

How do you go from Scotland and secretarial college to the outskirts of London, owning and managing an airfield......via a spot of car dealing?! Catherine's story shows that life can take some surprising turns, and that everything you do can be useful experience to bring to future jobs and roles.
Gwen gets to hear the incredible history of women in the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) - a British civilian organisation set up at the start of the Second World War with headquarters at White Waltham Airfield in Berkshire, which Catherine now owns and manages.
The airfield is home to West London Aero Club, three runways, aircraft hangers for privately owned aircrafts, a flying school, aircraft manufacturers, a model railway club, a pub, a party venue, and it is even sometimes transformed into a film set!
We hope you enjoy this conversation between Gwen and her fascinating guest, Catherine.
If you'd like to know more about White Waltham you can go to their website here.

Bob Davy is a one trick pony; so he says....but we think he is pretty multi-talented! He flies people and cargo all around the world, and he also flies Warbirds - that's ex-military aircraft. When COVID came along, bringing the commercial airlines and tourist flights to a halt, Bob found that he had time to focus on some the other things he loved doing - all to do with airplanes of course!
Gwen finds out that it's like actually spending time in the heat of the cockpit, what it's like flying at night, and why Bob's pockets have to be done up - can you guess?
If you are keen on flying and interested in becoming a pilot then Bob will give you a great idea of what that really means, and how you get there.

Welcome back to a new term of Gwen Gets To Work! We start the new term as we did the last, with a teacher of sorts. Gwen's uncle trains (mostly) young people at University in how to create the characters and environments that you find in video games.
They had a good chat about different types of video games, which video games they like to play themselves, and about their shared love of stop animation.
If you are interested in learning to code the trainer recommends Scratch and Minecraft, and if you want to get more hands on, maybe a Micro:bit from Technology Will Save Us.

Silly question - we all love LEGO! But some love it more than others and Gwen is one of those children that fell for it the moment they clicked their first two DUPLO bricks together.
Another life-long fan is this week's guest, Rob. Not only does he still love playing with these magical little building bricks but he actually works with them AND he has his very own minifigure!
You can imagine how excited Gwen was to ask him all her questions about what he gets up to all day long and to play a game of 'guess the LEGO collection'. Join in to see if you can beat him.
