Dr. Jamie Newsome started as a Research Associate for the University of Cincinnati Corrections Institute in January. She earned her doctorate in criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati, with concentrations in corrections and criminological theory.  Jamie has experience working in a community-based correctional facility, and conducting research on the causes of crime and delinquency and translating research into practice.  Her research has been featured in the Journal of Criminal Justice, Criminal Justice and Behavior, Development and Psychopathology, and the Journal of Youth and Adolescence.

The boys sit down to respond to the recent cancellation of therapy by political commentator Matt Walsh. They share their opinions and insights on what Walsh got right and where he may be going wrong.

Today, the GSW Crew is discussing the Dark Triad. The Dark Triad is a set of three personality traits that are often associated with negative and destructive behaviors. These traits are narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Narcissism refers to an excessive focus on oneself, including a sense of entitlement and a lack of empathy for others. Machiavellianism involves a willingness to manipulate and exploit others for personal gain, often through deceit and cunning. Psychopathy is characterized by a lack of remorse, empathy, and impulse control, often leading to impulsive and antisocial behavior. These traits can be found in varying degrees in individuals, and while they may provide certain advantages in certain contexts, they are generally associated with negative outcomes for both the individual and those around them.

The boys sit down to discuss the YouGov America Article Rumble in the Jungle: Which Animals Would Win in a Fight? 1,224 US adults were asked to choose which of two animals they thought would win in a fight in a series of head to head match-ups. On each page they saw two animals with the prompt: “Which animal do you think would win in a fight?” Each respondent saw seven match-ups, and no animal featured more than once. Data was weighted to be nationally representative of all US Adults, 18+. The survey was conducted between April 12-13, 2021. They also link this with the Dunning-Kruger Effect. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people wrongly overestimate their knowledge or ability in a specific area. This tends to occur because a lack of self-awareness prevents them from accurately assessing their own skills.

Today, the GSW posse reviews a large-scale experiment on new year’s resolutions. Despite the popularity of New Year’s resolutions, current knowledge about them is limited. We investigated what resolutions people make when they are free to formulate them, whether different resolutions reach differing success rates, and whether it is possible to increase the likelihood of a resolution’s success by administering information and exercises on effective goal setting.

The boys sit down today with Hilary Hislop. Hilary is a Certified Social Worker with six years of experience working in the social work field. Out of those six years of experience, she has worked with troubled at-risk youth, homelessness, substance abuse, and sexual offenders. Hilary specializes in cognitive behavior therapy, case management, and motivational interviewing. Hilary is a powerful force in the workplace and uses her positive attitude and tireless energy to encourage others to work hard and succeed. Hilary is inspired by her three daughters, who have given her the motivation to never give up. In her free time, Hilary likes to hike, draw, run, and take her daughters on dates.

 Jeff, Justin, and Mace discuss how to help clients beware of their triggers and what situations can be high-risk. The discussion involves how to decide what can be a trigger and how to “zoom out” on the situation and learn more about what events can lead up to a triggering situation.
