Dave has a wealth of knowledge on all things fitness, but today we're not here to talk about his gym. Instead, I wanted to get Dave on the podcast to talk about the future, and more specifically about something that we have all seen pop up across social media and various other places in relation to fitness, which is the metaverse of fitness. 

Now, as you're going to hear in this episode, it's not because I don't think these things are going to impact everyone in a big way, especially in the fitness industry. They definitely, definitely are. It’s more that the metaverse, and crypto, and blockchain are all getting so much airtime and that, for the average fitness industry professional, these concepts are a long way off from impacting how people run their businesses. It's causing a lot of people to stress about a failure to keep up with something that, right now, doesn't matter.

We talk about diversity in fitness a lot, and that applies to culture, ethnicity, body shape, and age. But it also relates to disabilities and physical limitations, too.

Today’s podcast guest is Laura Ellis, a SH1FT Instructor. As you're going to hear, Laura was diagnosed with scoliosis at 11 years of age, and she’s been dealing with her back problems ever since. But that hasn't stopped her from pursuing her dreams of working in the Fitness Industry and meaningfully changing the lives of people in front of her. Laura talks about the transformation she has gone through just since the pandemic in the last year, from hiding her scoliosis to proudly showing what her body can do.

In my view, one of the most important things we can do as Fitness Instructors is inspire other people into movement. And sometimes one of the most inspiring things we can do is be authentic and transparent about our limitations (or what other people may view as limitations), showing that we do not let those limit us.

Here at SH1FT Fitness, we like to make sure we are giving our instructors what they want in terms of education, product, as well as the topics they want to hear about on this podcast. We recently conducted a global instructor survey and were really stunned by the number of instructors who wanted to hear more about menopause, hormones, and their impact on both class members and instructors.

Well, you asked and we’re answering! Today on the podcast, I'm chatting with friend and colleague, Tracy Minnoch. Tracy was previously on Episode 12 talking about Studio Fitness in Your 50s, but since then, has developed a platform called, Sexy Ageing, which is an amazing resource that is focused around menopause. As you're going to hear on the show, menopause is a process that half the population is going to go through at some point, one that completely changes the way women interact with life and fitness. It was serendipitous that this episode was scheduled to be released today on World Menopause Day. 

You may either be thinking that this topic is super relevant to you, or that it’s not something that's relevant to you right now, but don't switch off because as a fitness instructor, this is something you need to know about. Whether or not you will personally go through this process, your class members will, and having a base level of understanding will allow you to be a more compassionate instructor and create better connections with your classes.

17 Nov 2022Pump No More? The New Rules for Strength Classes00:56:37

Programming real strength development training in a group fitness setting has always been a challenge. But if you can do it well, it can be the biggest opportunity for you as a group fitness instructor to attract a broad audience of people to your classes. The question is, how exactly do you achieve effective strength development when you're dealing with the constraints of the group in the setting? And why is the strength development audience so attractive? 

In today's podcast, we're going to tackle these questions head on. We will look at the evolution of strength training as a group fitness format, and how it's changed from the traditional barbell pumped style class into something that's far more closely resembling gym floor training. We're also going to look at what we can learn from hugely successful strength training boutiques, and how we, at SH1FT Fitness, have translated all of these learnings into a group fitness format that delivers a varied and interesting workout that works with the equipment available in a typical group fitness studio and actually delivers on strength gains. 

Now, there's always been a fair amount of opposition towards strength in the group fitness setting, particularly from PTs who argue, perhaps correctly, that you can't achieve the same strength gains in the group fitness setting as you can with the gym floor program. But guess what? Most people aren't working out so that they can lift the heaviest weight possible. They're training to be fit, strong and healthy, and that's something that we should be able to 100% get behind and achieve in the group fitness setting.

We’ve all been thrown into teaching virtually this year and for, I would say, 99% of Instructors, this has been a MASSIVE learning curve. Trying to figure out the audio, the staging, the platform, the booking system, the payment provider. It’s been a lot to learn in a very short amount of time. 

I’ve had a lot of Instructors asking for advice on how to simplify virtual and so I wanted to bring Kal from Onpodio onto the podcast. Onpodio provides a full-service product for Instructors that facilitates the running of live and virtual classes. Onpodio is one of a number of different providers available to Instructors that take all of the complication out of virtual and, if you’re struggling with trying to manage a million different elements of the virtual process, then I’d highly recommend considering this type of approach.

From talking to Joel, and also from my own experiences and struggles with body image, what our conversation reiterates is that it doesn’t matter whether you are in a smaller, bigger, rounder or leaner body - body image issues can affect everyone - even those you least expect.

Do you often worry about what people think of you? Or been concerned people might judge you for a certain aspect of your life or your body image? 

These are all difficult, but common things for humans to feel, and they can be even more exaggerated for us as Group Fitness Instructors, as by nature of our jobs, we are putting ourselves in front of people every day, and that can make us feel very vulnerable. 

Today on the show, I’m speaking to Ellen de Werd, former Beachbody Master Trainer, and creator of the Warrior Method. Ellen opens up very honestly about how she got into fitness, the struggles she had to overcome and also her constant friction between becoming comfortable in her skin and worrying that others would judge her for her decisions. 

Ellen has had some challenging moments and has gone through an amazing personal journey to get to where she is today. But what is really inspiring about Ellen's story, is that by allowing herself to free her mind from the worry of others judgement, she was able to become the person she wanted to be, and in doing so, has created a life and fitness career where she feels truly happy and fulfilled.

Diversity and inclusion. Two incredibly important concepts, but also two words that can cause a lot of emotion, confusion, apprehension and fear of judgement.

Welcome back to the new season of Group Fitness Real Talk! This season is going to be filled with a lot of hope and excitement for the future. There is still a long way to go in our collective journey to recovering from the pandemic, but I’m feeling really optimistic about the future and I hope you are too. 

In the first episode, we are getting the perspective of an area of the Industry that we haven’t covered on the podcast before and that’s regulatory bodies and national governing bodies for Group Fitness. Today I’m interviewing Sue Wilkie from EMD, the governing body for group exercise across the UK. Sue played a crucial role for Instructors during the pandemic, acting as their voice to government and she and the team at EMD worked incredibly hard, not only to support instructors, but also to ensure the Group Fitness industry was heard.

Now I know many of you are not UK based, but no matter where in the world you are listening from, it’s likely you had a governing body that was doing very similar to what the EMD UK team have undertaken in the last year so it’s well worth a listen to this chat to gain a perspective on this side of the Industry.

We have heard a lot about China in the last 18 months...but not a lot about what's happening there in the fitness industry. Today on the show, I'm talking to Matt Thraxton. Matt has been at the top of the Les Mills world for a long time and in the view of many, is one of the best Body Pump presenters there is. I'm so excited to welcome Kirsten Potenz to today’s podcast. Kirsten is someone that I really admire in the Fitness industry. She is the creator and founder of the Group Fitness format, Pound. Now, if you haven't heard of Pound, be sure to check them out in the show notes. Pound is unlike anything else in the industry, and you need to see it to fully appreciate it. 

As you're going to hear on the show, I'm a massive fan of what Kirsten and Pound have accomplished, their authenticity, their style, their brand -- it really, really resonates. And what also resonates with me is that they have an approach to Fitness that's all about fun and escapism. It's not about losing weight. It's not about before-and-afters. It's not about getting abs. If you've been listening to this show for a while, you know that that's exactly my philosophy as well. 

Now, this type of approach and workout definitely isn't for everyone, but Kirsten has carved out a niche and is very particular on what the brand stands for. This shines through in everything that Pound does, from their branding to their instructor mentality to the trainings they offer in the community they’ve created. There are some great lessons here for every Group Fitness instructor around understanding your purpose and knowing the environment that you're looking to create. As anyone that has been involved in fitness for a long time will know, September is a key month for the fitness industry, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. Instructors are coming back from their summer holidays, and it's a little bit like January in that they're refreshing their approach to fitness. September also presents an opportunity, particularly this year when the rest of the year has been so difficult with COVID, to focus on getting people back into fitness and creating habits they will actually stick to.

In today's podcast, we're going to split it into three short sections. In the first section, I'm going to give a little bit of real talk on a topic that I'm hearing a lot about as we come back into live classes, which is Instructor pay. Then I'm going to ask fitness authority, Emma Barry, what she thinks Instructors should be thinking about as we go into September. Finally, we're going to finish up with some data based on what we saw during the pandemic and now coming out of the pandemic. I'll share what I think Instructors can do to really make the most of the data, the learnings, and the changes that have happened.

Imagine you’re one of the leading Group Fitness instructors on the planet, you’re sitting at the doctor’s office and they tell you that you will never teach GX again. 

That’s exactly what happened to today’s guest, Lisa Osborne. If you’re a Les Mills Instructor, you’ll likely be very familiar with Lisa. For those of you that don’t know Lisa, do a quick google of “Lisa Osborne Les Mills” and you’ll find a fair few articles on her. She’s been the programme director for Body Attack for a number of years, the creative director for Body Step, and she’s an all-around Group Fitness Legend. Lisa is also a great friend and mentor who has had such a massive impact on my teaching and way I approach fitness, which you’ll hear in the podcast.

So why was Lisa told she would never teach again? It was due to a pretty serious situation with her hip, which required a full hip replacement. But...spoiler alert, she did teach again and she came back stronger than ever. 

If you’ve been teaching Group Fitness for a while, it’s likely you have suffered an injury of some sort. It’s almost a right of passage - and as you age, the years of wear and tear on the body can take their toll. Although you can’t always prevent injury and aging, there is a huge amount you can do to ensure it doesn’t end your Group Fitness career.

Lisa has a really powerful story and today she’s going to share her secrets as to how she’s still one of the most influential people in Group Fitness decades on from when she started.

Have you ever put yourself in the shoes of a 70-year old looking to stay active? If you have, you might realise that more and more older people looking to keep fit feel like there is nowhere they truly belong. The gym is intimidating for all ages, but this is an age group that didn't grow up with the gym as an option. For the final episode of 2021, I am reviewing the three key predictions I made at the beginning of the year to see how they turned out. Now, if you are paying attention to what’s happening in the world right now, you will be aware that in the last couple of weeks, things have gotten a lot more grim. It looked like things were pretty good during summer and we were hopeful that COVID was over. But now, thanks to Omicron, we are back in the depths of it.

While this podcast is intended to be both informative and uplifting, as it says in the name, the most important thing is that it's real talk. So this episode is going to stay true to the Group Fitness Real Talk approach for this final couple of weeks of 2021. I'm going to investigate how accurate my original 2021 predictions were, review the statistics and consumer trends for the fitness industry this year, and share what you, as a Group Fitness Instructor, can take away from all of it.

If you need to sit and marinate in the fact that this is a bit of a crappy time, allow yourself to do it. Give yourself the opportunity to mourn the fact that we've lost another Christmas period to uncertainty and to COVID. Just know that it is going to get better in the new year and that there’s heaps of opportunity left for us to take advantage of.
