29 Sep 2022Botrytis Semillon - 2019 De Bortoli 'Noble One', Riverina, New South Wales00:10:44

"I am a FIEND for this wine"

Ex-Radio Announcer Angus O'Loughlin insisted that this sweet wine be included in this season of Got Somme after tasting it during his WSET level 2 course. This wine, which Carlos had heard of before EVER visiting Australia, is the literal gold standard for dessert wines and the ideal half bottle to present to our palates. It is best suited and suggested to assess together with some cheese and crackers.

Expect a literal treat for this episode in the form of this deep gold colour, full bodied wine tasting of burnt pineapple.

This episode helps to distinguish youthful wine just by its appearance and differentiate Semillon from Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

It's also the first time the term "sulphur" has been used when describing the wines we've tasted on our journey to find Australia's best $30 bottle.

18 Jan 202496 point wine for $33! The value bottle that impressed a Master Sommelier00:32:00

Late last year Got Somme host Angus O'Loughlin was asked via our Instagram

"What bottle would you cellar for ten years"

He held up a 2021 Demi Shiraz that he was drinking in that moment.

That led to a phone call to Syrahmi owner Adam Foster who was inspecting the vines and they confirmed his studio attendance as first winemaker on the podcast in 2024!

Bottles brought into studio:

2022 Demi Shiraz

2017 Lala

2018 LaLa

2022 Syrahmi 'Angus'

2004 Syrahmi (first ever vintage)

A bit of Syrahmi: The name Syrahmi is a made up from “Syrah” the French word for Shiraz and “Ami” meaning friend. The idea being a “friendly Shiraz” or “A friend of Shiraz”. Syrahmi began in 2004 when Adam Foster gave up his day job as a Chef to pursue his dream of becoming a wine maker. He purchased his first tonne and a half of grapes from Heathcote winery and the dream was born. Each year grapes for Syrahmi are sourced and selected from different vineyards in the Heathcote region. Thus each year the wines are given a different name to reflect the vintage.

20 Apr 2023ONE BOTTLE Phillip Jones would drink if it was HIS LAST! 🍷00:37:27

Premier Winery Bass Phillip's founder and winemaker Phillip Jones brought in two of his own bottles, after generously decanting them prior to coming into studio, including:

2010 Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir

2015 Bass Phillip 'Issan' Pinot Noir

The reason for his choices is to show the difference between the two vineyard sites even though they are only 15kms apart!

In this Part 2 of our Phillip Jones interview we speak:

  • The peculiar way Phillip knew what bunches of grapes were going to be the best of the bunch
  • How not all corks are created equal
  • The reason why only 300-400 bottle of the Bass Phillip 'Reserve' wine is made each vintage 🍇

08 Dec 2022Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon: 2020 Vasse Felix 'FILIUS', Margaret River, Western Australia00:12:25

Our FINAL $30 or under bottle of wine has been hand selected by Master Sommelier Carlos Santos.

Why this bottle?

Carlos wanted to find a similar bottle that could knock the Chateau Haut Madrac, our current #1, off the top of the podium.

They're both traditional Bordeaux blends and both influenced by coastal climates. Carlos knowing the Vasse Felix winemaker thought it could topple our old world classic but can it shake up the competition before next weeks 'finale'?

22 Sep 2022Grenache - 2020 Spinifex 'Garcon', Barossa Valley, South Australia00:10:52

"Grenache (by itself) is not something I really, really enjoy but then again if done right can be very, VERY good" - Master Sommelier Carlos Santos

A thin skinned grape variety that usually thrives in colder climates we are excited to see if this Spinifex Barossa Grenache can surprise us by going against the climate 'norms' and producing a balanced, fragrant, high alcohol wine that makes our Top 3 lists.

What do you prefer: Grenache by itself or blended with other grapes like in a GSM?

04 Aug 2022SGM - 2019 John Duval 'Plexus', Barossa Valley00:10:58

We apologise!

This podcast is on a mission to find the best quality bottle of wine UNDER $30 and this week we splurged and spent $35.99 at the time of recording. Why? Master Sommelier Carlos Santos was interested in trying this bottle because it was made by John Duval, one of only four Penfolds chief winemakers, who was also in charge of developing Australia's most well-known export, "Grange."

We genuinely hope you don't mind reaching a little further into your pockets this week as we learn about "SGM." Stay tuned for an interesting explanation of why this isn't labeled "GSM."

"What I love about this podcast is you're introducing us to bottles of wine we would never have the confidence to pick" - Angus O'Loughlin

Originally thought to be Riesling this grape varietal is semi aromatic on the nose and more shy on the palate. Presenting us with oranges, apples and tropical tones it's a bottle that might become a favourite and certainly a talking point around the table.

13 Jul 2023Master Sommelier’s WORST nightmare… CORKED bottle of wine 🤢00:16:48

 $120 down the drain!

"Corked" wine does not mean a wine with small pieces of cork floating around in the glass. It is a word for a wine that has become contaminated with cork taint. In the worst instances, the wine tastes of nothing but mould – which should be obvious.

BUT what if it isn't?

How do you identify when a bottle of wine has gone bad?

We are here to educate and alleviate that fear as we accidently experience first hand what a corked wine smells and tastes like, demonstrate how it can be easy to distinguish between a regular bottle and the steps you can take when asking for a refund.

NEVER in over 60 Episodes has this happened OR SHOULD IT!

Join Angus, Carlos and some brand new faces for this episode of Got Somme

Watch the reactions on our faces the moment we realise it's corked!

11 Jul 2024VALUE in EXPENSIVE wines - In Conversation with Mount Mary00:24:52

Mount Mary is listed amongst the elite of Australian wine such as Penfolds 'Grange' and Henschke 'Hill of Grace' so why does it cost $165 and the others start at $900? We asked Chief Winemaker Sam Middleton

"I wonder what would have happened if we followed their price structure"

After visiting his local wine shop Angus O'Loughlin asked Sam what his thought were when he sees Mount Mary wines marked up 100% BEFORE corkage

"We treat our mailing list like family, what people do out of that is their decision and their choice"

This episode we are lucky to have a vertical of 'Quintet' the "flagship" of the Mount Mary wines with stories being shared about each vintage and the personal and professional reason why Sam brought them into the studio:

13 Jun 2024Master (Sommelier) Class in DECANTING!00:22:33

Have a cracking bottle of Red Wine and you don't know if you should decant it?

If you should - how long for?

Master Sommelier Carlos Santos is here to debunk the decanting myths and describe the many benefits, including separating the sediment from the liquid. This is especially helpful for red wines. Decanting also enhances a wine's flavour by exposing it to oxygen, and allowing it to breathe.

In this episode of Got Somme: We decant one wine into 3 different vessels to explain the process and why once decanted we can assess 3 different experiences.

Get ready to find out how to be rid of your wine dregs aka sediment and give your cherished wines their best chance.

In this episode of Got Somme hosts Angus and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos connect via satellite to Garth Hodgson for a 'One Bottle Review' of the champagne Frederick Savart L' Ouverture. We explore the nuances of whats in our glass, the price differences between the US and Australia, importance of temperature, and the evolution of flavours as the bottle is shared.

The conversation emphasises the joy of drinking champagne in a relaxed setting, pairing it with various foods, and appreciating its complexity beyond just being a celebratory drink. We also delve into the story behind the champagne producer, highlighting the craftsmanship and passion involved in creating this exquisite bottle of fizz.

🔖 wine tasting, Frederic Savard, One Bottle Review, wine pairing, champagne appreciation, wine experts, tasting notes, wine culture, podcast

Key Takeaways:

  • The goal is to destigmatise champagne and encourage more people to drink it.
  • Champagne should be enjoyed at the right temperature for optimal taste.
  • Champagne can pair well with a variety of foods, not just appetisers.
  • The weight and body of champagne can stand up to richer dishes.
  • It's important to appreciate champagne as a fine wine, not just a bubbly drink.
  • The bottom half of a bottle often tastes better than the top half.
  • Frederic Savart's champagne is a product of passion and minimal intervention.
  • Small producers like Frederic create unique and exquisite champagnes.

08 Sep 2022Shiraz - 2015 Saltram 'PepperJack', Barossa Valley, South Australia00:09:22

After mentioning this bottle since our first EVER episodes we've finally popped the top off potentially Australia's most chosen table wine.

Now that Angus has learnt from Master Sommelier Carlos Santos that "Pepper" in wine can also be confused with "Mint" or "Eucalyptus" we were keen to assess whether the title of this bottle has been lying to us for all these years.

Does this make our top 3 best value bottle of wine in the country? Is it in yours?

01 Sep 2022Viognier - 2019 Paul Jaboulet Aîné 'Parallèle 45' Côtes Du Rhône Blanc, Rhone Valley, France00:10:47

Having tried a Viognier from Australia it was only fair to give the 'Old World' of wine a chance to show their expression of the grape. This bottle blends Bourboulenc, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc but mostly Viognier to create a "fruit basket" on the nose. How does our previous Viognier bottle from Eden Valley, South Australia compare and what is this bottle missing in the opinion of a Master Sommelier? Press play on EP35 to find out!

Quiz: Head to our instagram after listening and answer this question: Why is this bottle called 'Parallele 45'?

10 Nov 2022Cabernet Sauvignon - 2021 Penfolds 'Koonunga Hill', Barossa Valley, South Australia00:11:55

Our first and overdue Penfolds on the podcast and did you know that when a label reads "Cabernet Sauvignon" it only needs to be minimum 85% of what's labelled? Master Sommelier tastes a blend in this bottle and calls out the other famous grape variety he feels is in the mix.

A great bottle to taste to realise what high alcohol wine tastes like and compare to a Pinot Noir for example.

23 Jan 2025Master REVEALS how to pick DRY ROSÈ at bottle shop!00:19:46

Ever found yourself in a bottle shop or staring at a wine list, desperately searching for a dry Rosé? But how do you know which one to pick? Maybe you’ve opted for a French label, convinced by a friend’s mum that it's dry? Perhaps you assume that the darker pink Rosés must be sweet?

It’s time to bring in a Master Sommelier to guide us through buying and enjoying the perfect Rosé.

In this episode, 25-year-old Amelia represents a large group of Rosé enthusiasts who feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. She shares her personal experiences and preferences when choosing a bottle, and we discuss how marketing and labelling play a big part in those decisions.

Master Somm Carlos Santos, alongside host Angus O'Loughlin, dives into the nuances of Rosé, exploring everything from colour and flavour to alcohol content and regional differences. Carlos offers expert tips on picking the right Rosé, whether you're enjoying it on a warm summer’s day or pairing it with food.

🔖 Rosé, wine tasting, wine preferences, marketing, alcohol content, flavour profiles, wine regions, summer drinks, wine selection

Key Takeaways:

  • Marketing and bottle design play a major role in wine choices.
  • The colour of Rosé doesn’t always correlate with its sweetness.
  • Alcohol content is a good indicator of Rosé’s sweetness level.
  • Lighter Rosés are typically seen as fresher and more suited to summer drinking.
  • French Rosés are often the most popular choice among consumers.
  • Knowing the region of origin can help you make a better selection.
  • Aged Rosés tend to have more complexity and depth.
  • When choosing Rosé, consider the occasion and potential food pairings.

05 Sep 2024Bordeaux's First Growth Wines | Explained by a Master Sommelier00:16:55

You WON'T believe what we paid for this bottle!

Master Sommelier Carlos Santos discusses Bordeaux wines, specifically the first five growth wines, while tasting a bottle of 1988 La Mission Haut-Brion and talking about its history and classification.

They also touch on the concept of super second growth wines and second wines of famous Château's. Do we dare compare Bordeaux wines to Australian wines? Discuss the importance of their individual terroir. Plus they reveal the pricing of the 1989 La Mission Haut-Brion and the great deal they got at auction.

🔖 Bordeaux wines, first growth, super second growth, second wines, terroir, pricing

Takeaways

  • First growth wines in Bordeaux are highly prestigious and include five top Château's.
  • Super second growth wines are highly regarded and often outperform some first growths.
  • Second wines of a chateau are made from lesser quality grapes and are more affordable.
  • Terroir plays a significant role in the quality and characteristics of Bordeaux wines.
  • Auction can be a great way to find good deals on expensive wines.

Sound Bites

"We are drinking Bordeaux wines, baby."

"What are the first five growths?"

"Definitely gone into the tertiary flavours, but still a little bit of fruit hanging on in there."

We've all heard about following in your father's footsteps but for Sam Middleton of Mount Mary Vineyard we wanted to know if expectation meant invitation

"There was probably never any doubt that I would end up doing what I'm doing now, wine was always a big part of my life"

Taking our conversation on the Journey through working at Gevrey-Chambertin and cutting his teeth at Coldstream Hills and Dominique Portet before returning to his families estate as Chief Winemaker

"Once you're back you're very unlikely to leave, you wanna try and get as many different experiences as possible"

Imposter Syndrome, stamping his mark on the label and the next generation of winemakers are all discussed while everyone enjoys a stunning

2015 Mount Mary Triolet. "It was a fantastic Yarra vintage, probably one of the best I've been involved in"

2021 Mount Mary Chardonnay "Great acid, great focus, great freshness, great drive but still have flavour and concentration and personality"

If you can enjoy a glass of MM alongside listening or watching this episode.

25 Jul 2024Master Sommelier reviews '100 Point Wine'00:10:09

Does '100 Points' mean a wine is "Perfect" and if so does that mean we are comparing that bottle against the worlds best?

After seeing one of Australia's best wine writers Erin Larkins review of 2022 The Standish 'Lamella' we knew we had to get our hands on it and see what a Master Sommelier thinks!

A little bit about Standish via Goodwood Cellars:

A 6th generation Barossan, Dan Standish established his eponymous winery in 1999 whilst still working as winemaker at Torbreck Vintners. His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father. All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follows a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk.

As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label. Stylistically Dan's wines are as rich and profound as you would expect from Barossa Valley old vines but they have a satin texture and dreamy perfume that sets them far apart from his contemporaries. Here, dark fruits are encased in cocoa and earthy richness but with gentle spice, soil tone, asphalt and a stony minerality that gives the wines a beautiful dimension. These are special Australian wines!

16 May 2024Top 10 Australian Chardonnays future DECIDED!00:20:47

Embarking his 20th vintage in Yarra Valley Toolangi winemaker Kaspar Hermann knows a thing or two about getting the best from a Chardonnay grape.

Marrying into a wine making family, and taking a viticulture course himself in his teens, wine is where he was destined to be and after vintages with Seville Estate, Rochford and Mount Mary, Toolangi came calling. Taking over the reigns from legendary winemakers Rick Kinzbrunner, Franco D'Anna, David Bicknell and Willy Lunn his first vintage in 2019 was made somewhat easier by starting during the harvest and the pressure of making calls about the canopy and crop being delayed until 2020.

In this episode of Got Somme: Master Sommelier Carlos Santos and wine lover Angus O'Loughlin talk about the Toolangi Takeover, the importance of 'F Block Chardonnay' and the world stage Kaspar dreams to take his wines.

10 Aug 2023DESTROYING $500,000 worth of Wine! 🔥🍷00:25:09

In 2018 fire destroyed the restaurant and cellar door, containing $500,000 worth of wine, of famed Australian winery '10 Minutes by Tractor'.

Today owner Martin Spedding sits down with Master Sommelier and Got Somme Host Carlos Santos and co-host Angus O'Loughlin to talk about the tragic day and how they emerged from the ashes to win 'Wine List of the Year' and named as one of Victorias best restaurants.

Make sure you stick around to the end to find out why Martin fought the insurance company to hold onto a $40,000 bottle of 2000 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Romanee-Conti Grand Cru and what his plans are with the famed or should we say "flamed" bottle.

We firstly assess our current #1 wine under $30 the 2017 Chateau Haut Madrac against the just released 2018 vintage and the results surprised us!

Then we take the challenge to a bottle that on paper reads a similar story:

  • Bordeaux
  • Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon Blend
  • 2018 vintages
  • 13.5% alcohol

09 Feb 2023The BEST Australian wine REVEALED (not Penfolds Grange 😲)00:31:18

"Holy S***"

Surprising a Master Sommelier with his FAVOURITE wine! 4 different vintages 🤯🍷

Master Sommelier Carlos Santos has been talking about Wendouree Winery in Clare Valley, South Australia on nearly every episode of Got Somme to date. So when we got the chance to surprise him with a flight of 4 different vintages and varietals from the brand he said "NO F***ING WAY".

The Wendouree vineyards were established in 1893, and its distinctive, high-quality wines are known to have an indefinite shelf life despite their little production. They have grown to be somewhat of an Australian cult favourite among savvy wine drinkers. The only way to get them when they go on sale is via the mailing list, which is still one of the most difficult to join in Australia.

17 Mar 2022Pinot Noir: 2019 Mt Difficulty 'Roaring Meg'" Central Otago, New Zealand00:09:49

"I would say for Pinot Noir it has a deep intensity! Compared to tasting a Shiraz then no, it's pale, but we are trying a Pinot Noir which is quite deep even in colour" - Carlos Santos MS

The first time our podcast has circled back to the same wine varietal - Pinot Noir. A very different style to what we have previously tasted hence why we picked this bottle.

Deep red fruit, no freshness, overripe and a jammy nose but with a different effect on the palate.

Enjoy the glass, bottle and episode

30 Nov 2023“NEVER drink champagne out of a flute” | Krug Champagne00:18:08

The text message from Carlos read: "Oh mate... if we can get Olivier it will be HUGE!"

The schedule was tight, 20 minutes only, to quiz the sixth generation of the founding family of Krug and it's current Director Olivier Krug. Carlos reminisces on his first experience in France at the vineyard, the incredible bottle of wine he was lucky enough to taste and how each glass should taste like a symphony of flavours.

Truly one of our favourite moments this year is Olivier describing how each Cuvee is created and how the "ego's" of some vintages need to be managed.

Raise a glass... but not a flute

(that makes sense when you watch this episode)
