30 Mar 2022Landmarks of New York with Tommy Silk00:54:25

There is no New York without its landmarks and history, and I have the perfect guest to open up the new season 5!

Tommy Silk, creator of @landmarksofny not only offers knowledgable posts and insights to an array of landmarks in the city, but he can also give you a tour of them as a certified tour guide in New York City. Sprinkle in his history degree from Fordham University and you have yourself an expert on landmarks.

With a great deal of knowledge about the city and Tommy’s New York story, it can all be digested in just under an hour. Here’s a little of what we chat about on this episode…

✧ Making the move from Manhattan to Brooklyn - the pros and cons

✧ His #onlyinnewyork story of a big raccoon taking over Central Park

✧ How the preservation of landmarks in NYC got started

✧ The most overrated and underrated landmarks, landmarks for newbies in the city and also for natives to explore as well

✧ His favorite landmark and the amazing story behind it

✧ We even talk Staten Island and give it a landmark shout out

✧ Plus we play a fun pop quiz game on landmarks, which he was not expecting. How did he do?

I’m so excited to have had the opportunity to interview him.

06 Apr 2022Raising New Yorkers with NYC Mom & Native New Yorker Bethany Braun-Silva00:50:09

Realities of NYC Parenting - all packed into one conversation, which  includes an unbelievable Upper East Side story!

On today’s episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Bethany Braun-Silva, who I feel I’ve hit the New York City Lottery of guests, to represent raising New Yorkers in so many ways than one. You’ll have to tune in to  the episode to hear them all.

“Bethany Braun-Silva is an on-air parenting, entertainment, and lifestyle expert. She is the former editor of Parenting.com and frequently writes about the latest and greatest gear for parents and kids in the city.

She was previously the Senior Editor of Big Apple Parent Magazine and has written for OK! Magazine, Hollywood Life, Mom.com, and CafeMom. She is a graduate of New York University, but her proudest accomplishment is being a mom to Elias and Jake, who make life (and work) endlessly fun”.

During our conversation Bethany notes how her first born birthed her career as a parenting expert as well as nostalgia of watching her children loving the same things she did growing up as a child in the city.

Bethany’s energy and through-and-through native New Yorker personality, which she wears like a badge of honor, shines throughout our interview. She also brings a very realistic perspective on raising children in the city, plus what she likes and dislikes about New York City for kids; how the school system in NYC is bound to be the biggest barrier for city parents; why Times Square is not popular among New Yorkers; how you must live 20+ years in the city to consider yourself a New Yorker,  and when I say so much more…I mean so much more!

NYC parenting resources mentioned by Bethany in our interview can be found below. Reach out, if you have any questions.

13 Apr 2022Upper West Side Dream Living in NYC with Native New Yorker Hattie Kolp00:44:17

This episode is a must listen if you ever wondered how New York City apartments work (outside the regular market) and how you can lock yourself into the city and an apartment forever, if you choose to.

Hattie Kolp my guest today notes, “everyone can get a rent stabilized apartment in New York City.” But nearly no one, will get an apartment for the price and square footage she is paying today, in her childhood home on the Upper West Side. She reveals all the details and more in our interview today and helps to break down rent stabilized vs. rent controlled apartments, as well as how you can get one in NYC.

I’m fortunate to have connected with Hattie to share her unique New York upbringing in the city with an even a more unique living situation. She shares the details on her pre-war gem of an apartment; family history on rent stabilized apartments; how she fell into fame and recognition during the pandemic due to her home; and lovely interior design skills and handy work. Also, how three Master Degree’s later she is finally doing what she loves.

27 Apr 2022Plant Powered Metro New York with Lianna Levine Reisner00:41:49

This is one of the most impactful topics and conversations to date on the podcast, with guest  @plantpoweredmetrony, because it could actually help transform and save lives in small steps but dramatic ways.

New York City isn’t just about the dining and food experiences, nightlife, attractions, landmarks, etc., but it’s also the energy of the people, the communities built here, the connections we make, giving back and not just taking, and how we choose to build our everyday lives here.

Did you know chronic diseases are the leading cause of mortality not only in the U.S., but across the world and Covid-19 did not help. All caused by a short list of risk behaviors that are generally under our control:

•Tobacco use and exposure

•Poor nutrition, including diets low in fruits and vegetables and high in sodium and saturated fats

•Lack of physical activity

•Excessive alcohol use

With pizza, bagels and BEC’s as the culture of NYC…I bring this conversation to the forefront to not only inform and educate myself and fellow New Yorkers on what resources are available in our community, but also for those who want to elevate their well-being and lifespan.

***TONS OR RESOURCES LINKED IN THE SHOW NOTES***

Lianna Levine Reisner, Newtwork Director at Plant Powered Metro New York, a non-profit organization in the city that started in 2019, helps to empower people to find better health and overcome chronic disease through whole food, plant-based nutrition. Lianna joined me to share her NYC story and initial culture shock of NYC and how finding places beyond the tourist traps ended up being her safe haven, as well as, how freedom of movement with transportation and all that the city offers has been a dream come true.

She’ll also share how she and many others like our NYC Mayor have overcome chronic diseases through nutritional changes and how one can start their own path today. This is a much listen to interview, if not for you, then for your loved ones.

25 May 2022Respect & The City with Native New Yorker Katherine G. Mendoza00:52:55

A thought provoking and super informative interview with, Katherine G. Mendoza. There was so much to unpack in our conversation that you can expect a second episode drop with her, which is set to be a surprise, so be on the look out for that.

Katherine is a Brooklynite and (I might add) a Manhattanite of Ecuadorian-American decent, a comedy writer, creative content producer & talented voice actor who has taken the online world by storm. She has produced for companies such as Buzzfeed, Mitú, NBC Latino and Amazon Prime Video's Tik Tok division. Her work has also been featured in many publications including Entertainment Weekly, Variety, Univision, Telemundo, Huffington Post, and many more outlets.

In our episode, Katherine and I discuss: New York City’s culture, subcultures, our Hispanic and Latin American roots, gentrification of the city, transportation and crime in the NYC. We also touch upon Los Angeles, along with her advice for those looking to make the move to the city (how it’s not like the movies or should one expect it to be like their hometown), and even provides native New Yorkers an even more REAL dose of advice of stereotyping the community.

Katherine brings her raw, compassionate, savvy and naturally humorous self to every question delivered and leaves you wanting more.

01 Jun 2022New Yorkers in LA with Daniel Zahler00:54:59

New Yorkers in LA - do you feel the heat already on this topic or is it just the weather!?  This topic never gets old and there’s so much to learn from those who call these places home as well as their fascinating stories.

My guest today, @danielzahler started a movement to unite New Yorkers in Los Angeles. That’s right, The New York Times picked up Daniel’s unique, yet much needed community of New Yorkers, who have made the transition to Los Angeles and who have connected through a What’s App group of 250 ppl (with a waitlist to join) called, NYC in LA.

Why he started this community and more on what his New York & LA story is - you’ll have to tune into the episode for that. However, what I can share is that Daniel has so many tips for both coasts along with pizza recommendations that will have you wanting to visit both cities to confirm.

Daniel is a Harvard graduate in Chemistry & Chemical Biology, and has a JD from Harvard Law School. He even had a fellowship at Yale Medical School. He knows his east coast and is currently making his best life in the west coast while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Also did I mention, he not only offers multiple quotes on New York City, but he also shares a poem intertwining the city and Burning Man as one. Queue the heat and enjoy the episode!

13 Nov 2022Moving to NYC Post Pandemic with Brittney Scardina01:07:31

Living in New York City is attainable, but not without many learnings along the way. In this week’s episode I sat down with Brittney Scardina, a new local to the city, who although did some extensive research before her move to NYC - she never saw the Ikea couch situation coming her way that would become one of her first #onlyinnewyork moments (like an episode of FRIENDS), and a pretty hilarious one yet, although not so funny when you’re actually living it.

Brittney was an absolute joy to speak with, she brought a different perspective and approach to her move to New York City and she’ll share her tips in our interview. You can expect everything from:

  • Why having a real estate agent/broker was pivotal to her move
  • How research and visiting the city ahead of her move was so impactful for a smoother transition
  • How coming with an open mind and a side of grit is a recipe for success in the city

And, why she choose the neighborhood she moved to plus so much more! You won’t believe how lucky she got in getting her apartment in the height of the summer in 2022 when rent prices were soaring and the housing stock was limited post pandemic and everyone returning to the city.

Tune in and let us know what you think or if you have a moving to New York story you'd like to share.

27 Nov 2022Native New Yorker & Gossip Girl Star Johnathan Fernandez01:13:21

Are you ready for Season 2 of Gossip Girl on Dec. 1st?!?

I hope you everyone enjoyed the thanksgiving festivities, because I have one more juicy dish to bring to the table on this New York Sunday.

In giving my thanks, I’m grateful Gossip Girl existed, inspiring the Gossipnista podcast to be born, then bringing GG 2.0 to life in a bigger & bolder way, ultimately leading me to my run-in & interview with the talented & fun actor, Johnathan Fernandez, who plays Nick Lott, a series regular on the New Gossip Girl.

So the questions are…..has dad Nick Lott gone bad boy in the upcoming season of GG? And, do him & Zoya end up caught up in the glitz & glamour of Manhattan losing their bond along the way? Oh, and where does that unassuming relationship between Nick Lott and Ms. Kate Keller go? Rumor has it, it’s all or nothing. Sparks will fly as Georgina light’s up the second season and Monet de Haan had better watch out thinking she can be Queen B. The sisterly love/hate relationship between Zoya & Julien continues as does the ménage à trois with Max, Aki, and Audrey. So much to cover and so little time!

You’ll have to tune into my podcast interview with Johnathan to get the scoop on some of these topics, plus get a behind the scenes story of the GG cast members living in the city. Johnathan will of course, share his relationship with New York and his perspective as a native, as well as dive into his acting career.

And might there be another O.G. cast member making any appearance this upcoming season - I'll never tell! Enjoy the interview.

12 Nov 2019Trailer: Welcome to New York00:02:36

Welcome to Gossipnista, a New York City lifestyle podcast that seeks to continue enriching the lives of New Yorkers and those looking to move here.

I’m your host Mariana Monks (@gossipnista) a newlywed and newbie to NYC. This podcast which has a pop culture reference to it was created for those who love New York City and want to live their best lives in it.

After my lifelong dream of moving from one coast to another - Los Angeles to New York City, I quickly realized the Big Apple would be no easy walk in the park. I had a million questions and needed answers, so I decided to start this podcast with the intention to learn, educate, and more importantly answer all the questions about the city for the many that would come after me.

Bringing you my insight and lessons periodically on the podcast, you’ll most often hear the stories of those who live in the city, along with native New Yorkers, recent transplants, experts in various topics, and staples of the Empire State.

Im beyond excited for this journey and to learn more about you as well as connect with all who share my same passion for NYC. I’d love to hear from you, so please feel free to DM at @gossipnistapodcast or email me at gossipnista@gmail.com.

20 Jan 2020Renting 101 in New York with NYC Realtor Katharine Walter00:59:05

Did you know that you don’t have to go through the hassle of renting an apartment on your own, in the city, and you can afford a Broker to help you? You know why, because you don’t have to pay the high Broker fee to have one! Simply ask your Broker of choice to look for no-fee apartments, or a listing where the landlord is willing to pick-up the Broker fee and pay them directly. Why go through hours of looking yourself, when you can find professionals such as my guest this week, @katharine.walter who is one-hundred-percent transparent in her work. Hear more about this and pretty much every question you may have about renting in New York - from condos and co-ops, to what percentage a Broker can charge, paperwork, questions to ask before renting, and why you need to know about 311, etc. With that being said, make sure to grab a notebook!

12 Apr 2021SPOTTED: NYC Apartment Renting Tips (Series) Episode 100:18:08

Making big moves in 2021? The rental market landscape has definitely changed due to the pandemic, and I believe it’s still very much a renters market in New York City.

Whether you’re a current New Yorker who looked to optimize during Covid’s availability in NYC and upgraded your apartment to get those views you always dreamed about; or move to a new more desirable neighborhood; maybe have more amenities; or need more space, etc., it’s all been possible and it’s only the beginning.

If your new to the city and/or dreaming of a New York Lifestyle, it’s more than possible!- I’ve gathered some tips throughout my apartment search, which you may find helpful and I’m here to answer any questions you might have.

I’ve had my finger on the pulse since early on as well as the height of apartment rental vacancies in the city during September/October 2020 and have experienced it firsthand.

From what’s going on with brokers and fees right now, to the stringent application process, the difference neighborhoods in the city, things only New Yorkers would know about apartments and searches, etc. There is so much more to share that I’ve decided to start an ongoing ‘Spotted’ series on Apartment hunting.

This would not have been possible without the number one source New Yorkers look to find an apartment, StreetEasy.

03 May 2021Making NYC Your Temporary Home with Mark & Kristen Morgan00:53:36

Who doesn’t have the travel bug right now? I definitely do! How amazing would it be if one could try before they buy into something - especially a place like New York City!

That’s exactly what my guest’s this  week did, Mark & Kristen Morgan. Scientists by trade and world travelers by design, they left everything behind and set off on an 18 month honeymoon around the world in 2018 and ended it right before Covid-19 hit. However, that did not stop them towards the end of 2020, settling into New York and experiencing the city nearly all to themselves for a couple months in 2021.

With a world of knowledge learned  from traveling to 4 different continents and 35+ countries...and counting 'Where Are Those Morgans' travel blog - tune in to hear their perspective on the city, what they liked, disliked, and if they’ll make New York their permanent home. Also, hear some of their amazing travel adventures, which seem right out of a movie. What countries they enjoyed best; how much you can expect to spend in some countries and what 18 month of travel will set you back, plus suggestions on where to go next and of course, how to explore and live in NYC just as they did.

All of this and so much more on the episode. Let me know what you think and what you’d like to hear more of. Thank you, Mark & Kristen!

Karla wanted to express her gratitude to the following businesses below. Please check them out and see how you can support-

Specialized - Specialized gave Karla and other healthcare workers a commuter bike which they could use to go to work. It was a immense resource and alternative mode of transportation especially at the height of the pandemic to fell safer.

Transportation Alternative - This company helped match Karla with Specialized for a commuter bike. They accept bikes (used or new) to be given to those who needs it.

First Descents: Experience the Healing Power of Adventure - During 2020 this company awarded Karla and several healthcare workers with an all expenses paid rock climbing trip upstate. They generally serve  Cancer and MS patients to offer these life changing outdoor adventures - but of course they made an exception for healthcare workers.

Allow me to introduce a thrilling and unique New York Story, that many including myself would have not known if artist, Allan Bridge (Mr. Apology), had not created such a captivating idea. And now, Marissa Bridge, who was married to Allan, is sharing it with the world.

“The Apology Line,” hosted and Narrated by Marissa Bridge and made possible by @wonderymedia - shares the journey and creation of her late husbands work, in which he created a phone line in New York City to simply allow those who would have done something (mostly crimes), to call in and confess to a tape recording.

Little did they know, the calls and messages they received would change their lives. It is said, the infamous Zodiac killer called into the line as well as others such as  runaways, petty thefts, and major criminals confessing to murders and so many others. Some of their experiences are recounted, along with notable caller confessions, through “The Apology Line” podcast.

30 Aug 2021Watching New York Street Style with Johnny Cirillo00:52:05

You can be you or be whomever you want to be in New York City.

New York lends itself as one of the most magnificent backdrops in this world, while also being a place where ones expression can be truly embraced without judgement. My guest this week on the podcast is Johnny Cirillo, 'Watching New York'. He captures not only the beauty of the city, but it’s beautiful inhabitants through street style photography in the most natural, candid, yet polarizing ways possible.

His page is what REAL New York fashion dreams are made of in my opinion as well as Vogue magazine, which he was featured in recently.

By bringing a very realistic viewpoint on fashion in the city - Johnny, showcases New Yorkers who piece their outfit’s together creatively in various ways as he aims to share the essence of the city and its people in their natural state. Rarely, does that involve high fashion runway looks, but rather the raw and eclectic diversity of New Yorkers style season after season.

In our interview Johnny reveals so much insight into his life and love for New York City, along with more about his account ‘Watching New York,’ and the creation of it. Also, his hopes and plans on where he sees the future of the account and his work going (THINK BIG). And, ultimately what he looks for in the people he shoots and where he captures his street style.

I will say I was surprised to hear the one key ingredient Johnny looks for in his subjects….and it’s not always the best style. Can you guess what he looks for?

You could end up next on Watching New York's account with all the amazing insights from Johnny.

Head on over to his account to see firsthand more amazing street style at @watchingnewyork and be sure to follow!

Enjoy the interview and style tips.

06 Sep 2021The Bowery Boys (NYC History) with Greg Young01:31:13

Podcasting is a labor of love and The Bowery Boys define it!

Reinventing the way we consume history about New York City is what The Bowery Boys podcast has been doing since the 2000’s. The podcast is a New York City staple along with their hosts and creators Greg Young & Tom Meyers.

On today’s episode and long holiday weekend, it’s only appropriate that I have Greg Young (@boweryboysnyc) to share his New York City story, insights on the city’s history, and how The Bowery Boys got their beginnings.

Today, The Bowery Boys, are a media empire, which not only includes the podcast, but live shows, NYC tours, a book, and endless content about New York City’s history with so much more on the horizon.

After countless media publications and interviews, I’m grateful to have had a chance to speak with Greg Young and have him share more about The Bowery Boys as well as how Lower Manhattan and September 11th may have had a big role in inspiring the Bowery Boys creation. He also breaks down the top episodes to start with, if you're new to The Bowery Boys podcast, (as there are nearly 400), amongst his favorites. And of course, never before heard tips on navigating the city as well as some that may already sound familiar, but that are reoccurring amongst my guests and key to navigating the city.

Some of the biggest takeaways include New York is not a passive city; there’s always a new discovery in New York to explore or by viewing it in a different way; and that New York sometimes takes you on its own course of where your life and path should go…so be open!

Shoutout to Tom Meyers, the other half of The Bowery Boys, who is on double baby duty having adopted a precious little girl during the pandemic.

Enjoy my interview with Greg Young.

15 Sep 2021Original Gossip Girl with Nicole Fiscella00:42:03

Nostalgia, it’s like it never left for Gossip Girl. I mean, New York’s mayor at the time, Bloomberg, even gave the show its own day in the city - January 26th.

Tune into this week's episode as I bring you back to familiar people, music, and an interview with model, actress, and now mom, plus wellness guru, Nicole Fiscella, behind the original hit series Gossip Girl.

It was an era that over-popularized the upper echelon kids of the #UES and sensationalized the glitz and glamor of New York City to many, which is maybe why many of us loved it.

Alum Nicole, who was also known as Isabel Coates on #GossipGirl was #teamblairwaldorf all the way on the show, and so it’s no surprise her and Leighton Meester are real life bffs. But, Nicole’s journey in New York City leading up to getting booked for the show wasn’t always so glamorous as she too hit the pavement in the city (like many of us) to work towards her career in the industry. She lived all over Manhattan, and one thing is for sure, she can officially call herself a New Yorker having lived in the city for 10+ years. Yes, she even lived on the infamous #UpperEastSide, which her show made so popular indefinitely. Oh, and you won’t believe the chance encounter with Tyson Beckford she shared with me that may have catapulted her career as a model in the city. There’s also a mic drop moment when she shares the favorite pastime of the #GossipGirl cast in New York City.

21 Sep 2021Hip Hop in New York with DJ J-Ronin01:20:10

In honor of his birthday and it also falling on the same day as #NationalNewYorkDay (Sept. 21st) - I did everything in my power to drop Brooklynite, DJ J-Ronin’s episode today!

Tastemaker in hip hop, business man, and best damn networker in New York City are words I would use to describe Jonathon Marvin a.k.a DJ J-Ronin (@jronin82).

Hip hop and martial arts were in his bones long before Wu-Tang made it popular, respectfully. But, when Wu-Tang changed the Hip Hop community in the East Coast and around the world with their one of a kind beats, lyrics, and uniquely skilled members - DJ Ronin became a part of it. He was signed as a DJ for them and also Wu-Tang radio - (C.R.E.A.M)!

In case you don’t know who Wu-Tang is, I highly recommend the Hulu original series @wutangonhulu. During this interview,  there will be a lot of O.G. name drops from the underground and mainstream hip hop community.

Hear DJ J-Ronin’s unique NYC story, from a Caribbean filled community in Flatbush, to his passion behind hip hop and martial arts and why he thinks “everyone should be punched in the face at least once”, as a reality check. He also gives advice on being aware of your surroundings in NYC, as well as being humbled and part of the community while respecting its roots and culture as key advice for newcomers.

Additionally…

“Your network is your net worth.”

So get out there and know…

“People can feel your spirit, they can feel who you are and what you’re about.”

This, along with many other reasons are why doors have opened for Jonathan Marvin and why I’m glad to have met him on one unexpected subway ride, when first moving to New York City.

Who said…”New Yorkers are not friendly”!

Tune in to hear all this and some of his music as well as his picks on songs that define hip hop in New York and so much more.

20 Oct 2021What's Poppin New York with Davis Burleson00:40:08

He's a boy wonder and taking on New York City by a storm!

“Washington Square Park has its own talk show host.” - New York Post

Interviewing New York’s finest and set in the heart of the city (according to New Yorkers). This weeks episode stars content creator and Tik Tok sensation, Davis Burleson, who is the host a viral show called, “What’s Poppin”. His office, is in Washington Square Park where you’ll most often catch him as a man on the streets asking the park goer’s some of the simplest questions, yet getting some of the most colorful responses and people. Only in New York, right!?

I’m obsessed with watching his short content interviews on Tik Tok and Instagram, which have me laughing all day. Bringing comedic relief and lively energy to the city during the pandemic, Davis’s show has amassed nearly 100 million likes on Tik Tok.

Tune into our interview to hear his incredible New York story and journey that is unlike any I’ve heard before, as well as more about What’s Poppin (plus my compiled NYC soundbites from his show), and how his ups and downs with the city were very short lived. Also, how he went on to accomplish…what some might call “The New York dream”, in such a short turnaround.

Beginning his career in New York City and it welcoming him with open arms - what are Burleson’s plans for the future? Tune in for this answer and much much more.

25 Oct 2021NYC Real Estate is Back with Starr Densford and Jordan White (The Rosen Team)00:58:12

Broadway is back and so is the New York City real estate market.

According to major online publications, “The first half of 2021 experienced a record-breaking number of residential contracts signed.” And…it has not stopped since! Word on the street is that the rental market is just as busy with lines to see apartments and bidding wars driving up costs.

At the beginning of the pandemic, it looked as if New York City would potentially be making a major shift in the housing market, as many left the city in search for more space. This would ultimately shift the NYC housing market, creating a drop in demand and contribute to an overall decrease in housing prices across NY. This major shift would allow for more artists, creatives, and young people to filter in at more reasonable entry costs. However, that no longer seems the case as the shift back to the city greatly increased, but not to worry as there’s always opportunities somewhere here in the city.

My two guests today, Real Estate experts from The Rosen Team, Starr Densford and Jordan White, share what they’ve seen in the market this year and where it’s going. It’s a very insightful interview on the lay of the land on the NYC real estate market and beyond. Topics such as, where to buy, top neighborhoods, average price point in Manhattan, and differences between co-ops, condos, and townhomes, etc. Plus their unique stories as well as how some are destined to know their career path early on, although, it’s never too late to pivot to a 2nd or 3rd career change and thrive.

The Rosen Team understands the essential need to change with the always-shifting tide of the market. It was so much fun talking to Starr and Jordan. If you have any real estate questions please be sure to reach out to them.

03 Nov 2021Finding a Roommate in NYC with Rany Burstein (Diggz)01:03:01

New York is the top roommate rental search state in the US!

Today’s episode ㊹ is with CEO and founder of Diggz, Rany Burstein. Diggz, is a New York based roommate finding platform that has its pulse on the city and the lifestyle of New Yorkers. Created to help all those who are looking for roommates, or to list a room for rent and provide support to them throughout the process. Imagine a social network and dating app rolled into one, but better! You’ll have to tune in to hear why…

A startup that has grown substantially since its inception, the founder shares with me the importance of finding the right roommate/person to live with and how to take ownership of the process. His hustle mentality is what drew him to New York City initially and believes those who have the same mindset will thrive greater in the city.

Rany dives into and shares stats of typical users on Diggz as well as the top rental neighborhoods in the city, top roommate pet-peeves, how the platform works, and how diverse it is within its population of users. Even if you’re not looking for a roommate yourself, you may know someone who is and will find the information fascinating.

Also, listen in for his top three recommendations on best pizza places to eat in the city; his unexpected New York story and the creation of Diggz, along with the awkward yet disappointing encounter that led to it and so much more!

We hope you enjoy the episode. Rany was kind enough to share his direct email for any questions you may have.

08 Nov 2021Between the Lines of NYC with Uli Beutter Cohen (Subway Book Review)00:59:20

She’s the queen of the underground, and is giving back to the city and New Yorkers through sharing their stories one book at a time.

Uli Beutter Cohen is a New York City–based documentarian, artist, and the creator of Subway Book Review.

For 7+ years and counting, Uli has ridden every subway line through New York City to observe, interview, and photograph some of its most imaginative people: the readers of books. Encapsulating what type of books define the minds of New Yorkers, she has now written her very first book, Between the Lines: Stories from the Underground—a collection of conversations that beautifully illuminate who we are and where we are going. Uli has spoken to over 1,000 people in her journey and shares some of her favorite encounters with everyday people and icons alike, including Jamel Shabazz, Lynn Yaeger, New York Nico, Devon Rodriguez, and many others.

In our interview we not only talk Between the Lines, of course, but dive deep into what Uli believes is the defining make up of a contributing New Yorker who not only takes what the city gives, but also gives back; how to make it in the city and find oneself; as well as the ups and downs that led to her success, and the outrageous things people have said to her. She’ll share the magic of New York City neighborhoods and how building a community is essential in the city.

Her fun, magnetic, and relatable journey will leave you hanging on every last word.

Enjoy the interview and check out the book!

15 Nov 2021SPOTTED: European Vacation from NYC (Part 1 of 4)00:23:38

There’s a plot twist to this Spotted episode in more ways than one, but if you ever have plans to travel internationally, it’s of absolute value and a must listen.

Tune-in to hear a native New Yorker, turn recent Londoner, as we talk what we love and dislike about London and Paris. We also dive into the one tool that has saved my guest a lot of money while traveling abroad and that I wish I had on-hand while traveling.

You may or may not be familiar with this guest on today’s episode, as he’s been on the podcast before. And, I’ll also note, he was one of my very first if not the first New York friend!

Enjoy the episode and stay tuned for more to come on my European vacation.

P.S. - Be sure to listen to the very end for a message from me.

17 Nov 2021From New York with Love with ZIGS (Part 1 of 2)01:16:46

It's the two-year anniversary of the Gossipnista podcast today and there is no better way to celebrate then with my special guest today and her amazing music about New York City....

I still can’t believe I had the opportunity to interview such a talented up-and-coming musician and artist such as Erica Zigon. And yes, she’s definitely from New York, but you’ll have to tune in to find out where…

Her authenticity and talent is so raw with so many colors and stories to share throughout our interview, I am nearly left speechless.

You can expect a two episode installment with Zigs, today’s and the next one dropping on 11/22, which actually lines up perfectly with the two year celebration of the Gossipnista podcast today.

With major inspiration from her brother, who she’s always seen as a rockstar, and who helped to shape the musician she is today, she goes deeper into this bond, as well as her admiration for pop charts sensation Jon Bellion, and many other topics including New York City.

This is just the beginning for Zigs and I absolutely love the motto she’s adopted, “I try not to focus on getting bigger…just getting better.”

Amen to that and the new Manhattan/New York song she has created for the city!

22 Nov 2021From New York with Love with ZIGS (Part 2 of 2)00:51:23

New York, we’ve come a long way! Happy Thanksgiving week to you and yours, hoping that you can spend it with those you love this year, wherever you may be.

Episode 47, I bring you Part. 2 of From New York with Love with Zigs (Erica Zigon). Zigs and I talk about how her iconic New York songs nearly didn’t happen, and how the song Manhattan was born in the living room of her small apartment. It was there in which it all began and the entire band jammed out in an impromptu session to create the foundation for the song. She also  reveals the band who sparked her creative process for this New York centric album, plus much more.

And, as the winter and holidays approach, we also discuss her non-profit We've Got You Covered (WGYC), which aims to help the homeless population in the city by providing blankets, shoes, clothes and above all a human to human connection.  Zigs notes, she’s learned more speaking to these homeless individuals and hearing their stories than she did throughout her schooling. Now, that’s what I call the school of life in New York City!

Tune in and let us know which version of the Manhattan song you like best - the studio version or regular version?

27 Dec 2021Transitions and Newcomers to NYC with Kelly Kreth (Brick Underground)00:59:15

It's the finale episode of season 4 and we're talking Transition and Newcomers to NYC...

It has been particularly challenging the last two years for those moving in, out, or around the city and will continue to be so going into 2022.

Episode 48 brings you writer, real estate publicist, and expert, Kelly Kreth to share her wild NYC story and talk more about her role at Brick Underground, which is a one-stop online resource on all things real estate as well as an informative guide on living in the city and also a platform for sharing real New Yorkers living situations.

In our interview Kelly will dive into two big narratives that have defined NYC’s ever revolving housing door the last two years. She’ll note how newcomers to the city are happy to be part of the city’s “rebirth” after the ‘New York is Dead’ conundrum that has plagued the city and caused an uproar amongst many. She’ll also dive into what New Yorkers have transitioned into the most during the pandemic, as well as, where one can get the biggest bang for their buck in the city, and also share some crazy living stories that may make one think twice about moving here.

Kelly is the first guest interview ever where someone had absolutely no negative feedback about NYC. Her positive reinforcement comes through as she states that, “no matter how long you’ve lived in New York…you’ll always still feel honored just to be here.”

Enjoy the interview with Kelly Kreth and be sure to check out all the links at the bottom of the show notes here. You can catch Kelly’s email and share your New York living story with her & Brick Underground.

It has been my absolute pleasure serving my listeners, supporters and New York City with another year and season, and I’m very much looking forward to BIG things for the podcast and NYC in 2022.
