Our guest is architect Brian Silva on the various elements and features that are incorporated into a golf course design. During the conversation, Brian refers to “Redan” features, which was a new term for me, so I misunderstood it as the famous sculptor “Rodin”. But here’s the actual definition from Wikipedia: “a Redan hole has a green which slopes downwards and away from the point of entrance, typically the front right portion of the green. Links golf is played on the ground as much as in the air and, consequently, the green slopes away from the golfer playing to the green from the tee or fairway.”

29: This is pt2 of our driving range-side conversation with Hall of Fame PGA Tour Caddy, Andrew Martinez. Andrew began looping on the PGA TOUR for Grier Jones in 1968 before spending 12 years alongside Johnny Miller. Martinez was on the bag when Miller became the first player ever to shoot 63 in a major championship to win the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. Golf in the Kingdom published in 1971 has sold over a million copies and been translated into 19 languages. I’m honored once again to feature this conversation for the next two episodes talking with Michael about the book, the failed attempts to translate it into a movie, and his approach to golf. Michael became interested in the similarities between descriptions of successful athletes and people who said they had achieved the state of Zen. The novel spawned the Shivas Irons Society, an organization whose members combine golf and meditation.  Golf in the Kingdom tells the story of Michael Murphy, a young traveler who accidentally stumbles on a mystical golfing expert while in Scotland. 75: Do you have expectations when you step up to the first tee? According to touring professional Aaron Oberholser, if you're thinking about how you did last round, then you won't perform well and you won't enjoy yourself. If you feel pressure to perform at a higher level than where you are, you have to understand that pressure is what happens to an unprepared athlete. If you don't practice or train like you're in a competition, don't compete. If you want to compete in golf, then practice. A coach is necessary when you want to play to a certain level. We've talked to so many golf instructors on GOLF SMARTER who want you to believe that they can get you to the next level, but from this professional's perspective, you may be taking the fun out of the game. Golf is a game and it's meant to be fun, so give yourself a break.

In the beginning of golf, all clubs were the same length. With the advent of steel shafts, mass production, R&D and huge marketing budgets by major manufacturers, we've been convinced that every club needs to be a different length to be effective. But isn't the most important element in the variables of distance the angle of the club face? "No fear" putting is a goal that few achieve, but please get us there! Glen Coombe, the Putting Doctor, has retired from teaching, but his advice is just as helpful today as it was when we originally published episode #170 in March 2009. Glen gives us great tips on how to read the speed of greens, the importance of warming up your putting stroke before each round, and answers some listener questions. Legendary golf instructor and World Golf Teacher’s Hall of Fame inductee Manuel de la Torre started playing golf at 18 months as his parents’ apartment was above the golf shop in Madrid, Spain. His father, Angel de la Torre was a European tour professional and five time Spanish National Champion. His father was also close friends with Ernest Jones and the two of them talked for hours as the young Manuel paid attention. In this interview from 2009, at 87 years young, Manuel is in his 59th year teaching at the Milwaukee Country Club. In our conversation, and from his book, “Understanding the Golf Swing” he believes that we make the golf swing too complicated, don't visualize our shots enough and fail to recognize that the golf swing is similar to so many other things we do in life that can make it much easier to grasp. He was the first member of the PGA to be awarded their Teacher of the Year Award in 1986.

The next day, Golf Smarter listeners drove North across the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County (home of podcast host Fred Greene) to play 18 holes at Peacock Gap Golf Course.
