18 Jul 2024 | 177. Worthy: Self-Confidence, Self-Worth, and Insights from Jamie Kern Lima’s Book | 00:10:55
In our previous episode with Melissa we talked about trauma and if not dealt with can result in being an over-achiever or trying too hard to more. And my take away was that it could results from an underlying belief that I am not enough. Jamie Kern Lima’s book, Worthy, jumped off my shelf and called to me. I knew it might be helpful for us to cover it and see what Jamie has to say about this as it relates to our theme for the month, self-care.
Topics Covered: Self-Confidence vs Self-Worth Fear of Rejection Narcissism Resilience Success & Fulfillment
Here are 3 takeaways: 1. There’s a difference between self-confidence and self-worth. One way to look at is self-confidence
is the foundation that the self-worth house is built upon. 2. We can live out and experience every great thing in the world and feel unfulfilled the entire time because our deep sense of self-worth has debilitative cracks in the
foundation.
Mentioned in the Episode:
Worthy, How to Believe You Are Enough and Transform Your Life by Jamie Kern Lima.

Welcome to a Girl Take the Lead Sound Bite, a short episode which may be a bit more about a topic we’ve covered or a quick inspiration. This episode builds on Ep 76 where we explored Emotional Intelligence by digging into the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman. He had so many great things in that book that I wanted to share some of the insights he offered us. This episode is about what he had to say about what Artificial Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence will bring in the next 25 years. Enjoy the listen! As mentioned in the episode:

11 Jul 2023 | 80. Book Discussion: Emotional Agility by Susan David, PhD, With Help From The Velveteen Rabbit | 00:25:11
In this episode Yo digs into the book Emotional Agility by Susan David, PhD, to explore the science-based approach to navigate life’s twists and turns. It’s about getting unstuck, embrace change, and thrive in work and life. She states that how we deal with our thoughts, feelings, and self-talk ultimately determine how successful we’ll be. David has a special chapter on Becoming Real and she works in the book, The Velveteen Rabbit by Marjorie Williams. Yo discovered this book in college and treasures her own copy. You’ll hear a bit more from the book than what David offered because it’s so close to her heart. Enjoy the listen. Here are the episode take-aways: 1. Emotional agility is the absence of pretense and performance which gives our actions greater power because they come from our own core values (not someone elses). 2. It takes courage to appoint ourselves as our agent for our own life – it involves embracing a new identify and releasing narratives that no longer serve us. 3. We reach that level of being REAL, that level of emotional agility, not through magic, but through a series of steps in everyday moments over the course of a lifetime. 24 May 2023 | 71. Let’s Talk People Pleasing with Dr. Ilene S. Cohen, author of When It’s Never About You. | 00:33:52
Dr. Ilene Cohen joins Yo to discuss her book When It’s Never About You, The People-Pleaser’s Guide to Reclaiming Your Health, Happiness, and Personal Freedom.
Dr. Ilene, as she likes to be called, is also the author of the book we discussed in Ep 61 about Forgiveness. I liked that book so much I asked Dr. Ilene if she’d come talk to us about her other book and she agreed.
Here are the 3 Takeaways:
1. Pleasing behaviors usually start as a way for us to feel
less anxious about our lives. 2. It’s not selfish to be self-full; seek a health balance between being selfless and taking care of your own needs.
3. To help overcome any fear you might have about confrontation, don’t overestimate other people’s anger – they could be fine hearing what you have to say.
We hope you’ll enjoy this episode!
As mentioned in the episode: Dr. Ilene’s book, When It’s Never About You
Dr. Ilene’s book, The Forgiveness Workbook Ep 61 Alignment and Forgiveness, and the Forgiveness Workbook

28 Jun 2023 | 76. “Don’t Take It So Personally!” – Can Daniel Goleman and Brené Brown Help Us Understand the Comment? | 00:24:42
Yo was super intrigued about the comment she would receive: “Don’t Take It So Personally!” Her go-to response was defensiveness. Perhaps you can relate? She went to the experts when it comes to emotional intelligence and emotions: Daniel Goleman author of the book, Emotional Intelligence, and Brené Brown, author of the book, The Gifts of Imperfection. Perhaps with their help we can all handle comments like this or others like it? Here are the 3 Takeaways: Instead of immediately becoming defensive or reactive, when someone says “Don’t take it So Personally”, let’s take a moment to pause, take a breath, and reflect on the situation. Play your Empathy Card: consider the intentions and context of the other once our emotions are managed. No matter what, understand that a comment or criticism does not define our entire identity or worth. As Mentioned In The Episode: Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence

Janine Klein, CEO & Co-Founder, and Andrea Canny, Actor & Interactive Learning Specialist, of the Emotional Intelligence Institute (Eii), join Yo to talk about how avatar-led training is delivering human-focused solutions. Eii is taking the power of creative storytelling and instead of using it to entertain, they help people understand each other on a deeper level. Their mission is to create immersive training experiences that blend artistry with emotional intelligence. Janine is an Innovator of immersive learning, virtual and live action simulations and role play experiences. She is a film & theatre actor, storytelling/improv and EQ consulting and awarded playwright. As Owner and Creative Director, she leads her team in pioneering methods for leader development and challenging conversations, making a definitive impact in the fields of defense, healthcare, and education.
Andrea, you may remember, is my beloved sister-in-law and amazing performer with a 40-year career spanning through Asia, Europe, and the USA. She’s joined us on 4 other episodes and you can check below for those details. Her Disney career began at Disney’s MGM Studios as the original Belle (Beauty and the Beast), original Laverne (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Adventurers Club, and more. Andrea was voted Vocalist of the Decade on Broadwayworld.com in 2020. She also won Critic’s Pick: Best Actress in a Musical 2018 for her portrayal of Mama Rose in Gypsy at the Garden Theatre.
Topics covered in the Episode: Emotional Intelligence Institute Origins Avatar-Led Demonstration Benefits of using Avatar-Led Training Improvisation & Storytelling Role Client Feedback
Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1. A demo really helps put yourself in the role and you will find yourself suspending disbelief. The technology allows one to practice and do a dress rehearsal so the body can be relaxed during what can be difficult conversations. 2. Avatar-led technology is different than role-playing because of the vulnerability involved in 1:1 conversation with people can have unintended consequences while avatar-led training allows individual practice and results in complete buy-in. 3. The actor/avatar provides the safe-space (no right or wrong) to allow participants reveal their personal stories that they’re naturally open to in life for their own self-discovery.

14 Sep 2023 | 99. Personal Letter Writing vs email: How Would You Score Chatgpt? | 00:08:52
Today’s Sound Bite episode builds on Ep 98 where we discussed the book A Daughter is Special by Meenakshi Singh which was about the letters sent by her mother in India while she was studying in the U.S. – it brought the following question to mind for me after that episode: What do we think about letter writing, as defined as either handwritten or typed AND mailed versus an e/m sent digitally? So I did some research and checked in with my new best friend, Chatgpt and asked why letter writing is important. And then I thought it would be fun to see what you thought so I reached out to listeners in our FB Group to take a poll to indicate if they agreed with what Chatgpt said. They didn’t know at the time that the statements were ai generated and we’ll compare their answers to mine as we go along. 15 Sep 2022 | 33. The Emotions of Change: What Brené Brown in Atlas of the Heart and the Tao of Leadership Tell Us | 00:20:20
Yo shares her journey as she shifts her career to academia and all the emotions she’s noticed along the way. Her hope is that you’ll notice these emotions as you pass through your own emotions of change. To help things along she references the following Atlas of the Heart chapters: Places we go when things are uncertain or too much: Stress, Overwhelm, Anxiety, Worry, Avoidance, Excitement, Dread, Fear, and Vulnerability. She was trying hard to avoid: Places we go when we fall short: shame, self-compassion, perfectionism, guilt, humiliation, embarrassment. But she could see herself going to: Places we go when it’s beyond us: Awe, Wonder, Confusion, Curiosity, Interest, Surprise All the time hoping to get to: Places we go when the heart is open (love & trust) or Places we go when life is good (joy, happiness). These were a couple quotes she found helpful: “To be authentic, we must cultivate the courage to be imperfect—and vulnerable. We have to believe that we are fundamentally worthy of love and acceptance, just as we are. I've learned that there is no better way to invite more grace, gratitude and joy into our lives than by mindfully practicing authenticity.” “By cultivating our courage to be who we are uncensored, compassion to others and to ourselves, and connections with people through both good times and bad, we can begin to recognize our self-worth and live with meaning and satisfaction. We can be us, exactly as we are, and go through life with confidence and joy.” There are two podcasts mentioned in the episode that could also be a valuable references about change: Raising Vibrant Kids (Rachael Blair), Episode 26, “Navigating Change”. UnScripted (Rachel Brumberger), Episode 40, “Your Late Summer Meditation is Here!” Shout out to Whitney Baker, Electric Ideas Podcast, for her idea to ask my students "What Brand Would You Be"? 20 Feb 2024 | 135. Unleashing Creative Brilliance: A Conversation with Lane Gardner | 00:37:01
Lane Gardner, Gen X, Speaker, Author, Coach, Singer/Songwriter joins Yo to talk about her book, Lifeline, Recovering your Mental Wellness through Uncovering Your Creative Brilliance. Lane is devoted to guiding individuals to discover their authentic selves through creative expression. She’s crafted Self-Mastery Tools for mental wellness, empowering others to embrace life with joy, creativity, and the freedom to be you. Despite a tumultuous start marked by the fallout of her father's PTSD, her family's involvement in a religious cult, and the challenges of an abusive stepparent, Lane found solace and inspiration in her family's rich musical tradition. Lane discovered her own gifts at age 9, excelling in singing and finding refuge in the local community theater. After being invited to work with students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida after the horrific mass shooting at their school in 2018, Lane knew she needed to mobilize a new mission to foster connection and healing within communities by transforming individual and collective trauma into original works of art. She founded a therapeutic arts non-profit organization THREAD, brings the healing power of creative expression to individuals and communities living in and with trauma. Through arts centered and therapeutic workshops, THREAD serves the needs of survivors of abuse, those struggling with addiction and mental health, cancer survivors, incarcerated men and women, veterans, and those impacted by inequality and discrimination of any kind.
Here are the three takeaways from today’s episode: 1. We already have everything we need inside us to navigate the ups and downs of life and find greater fulfillment by aligning more with our fullest selves.
2. Our one-of-a-kind, unique creative expression is the perfect toolbox for each of us, opening a direct line to all the inner-resources, assets, skills for everyday mental wellness and deep healing.
3. Accessing our inner creative brilliance isn't about feeling pressure to be an "artist", it's a pathway to self-discovery, healing and fulfillment.
As Mentioned: Lane’s Book: Lifeline: Recovering Your Mental Wellness Through Uncovering Your Creative Brilliance Hear Me Out (written by students living in the aftermath of the February 14th, 2018 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, FL) Inner Critic Ep 126
More About Lane: As Lane facilitated programs for others, she concurrently unraveled her own journey, gradually healing from early traumas. Shifting from finding solace on the stage to delving into her own stories, Lane embraced songwriting as a powerful form of self-expression. This transformative process culminated in her debut album, "Fertile Ground," released in 2015 on her record label, Third Road Records. Her life experiences uniquely equip her to guide others through a journey of SELF discovery. Reflecting on Ep 58 about Apologies, Yo takes the topic of bullying further by researching the topic. She found two books: The Bully at Work by Gary & Ruth Namie PhD, and A**hole Survival Guide by Robert Sutton, a Stanford professor. The book title is actually different that A**hole but we don’t want to label the podcast as explicit so kept it clean but you get the drift. These authors offer us lots of learning that might help you or someone you know that is dealing with a bully or has dealt one in their life. This episode covers the following topics and offers research from the two books: · Who are bullies · What tactics bullies use · What happens to Targets · Ways Targets can release anger · Why bully behavior happens · Strategies for coping with a bully Yo brings her experience in this area and offers her own words of wisdom. 09 Feb 2022 | 3. Betty White: More than just funny? | 00:38:43
During this episode we’ll (Yo, Emma and Kiki) explore Betty White, the beloved legend who was actually one powerful leader and what she means to different generations. We discuss the following: * Key points from the book, When Women Invented Television, by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong where the author points out that Betty is recognized “for offering early television her crazy ideas, her willingness to do whatever it took to succeed, and her outrageously charming personality”. We are most grateful to her for this! * We recognize her leadership and authenticity in choices she made about marriage, having children, and helping others along (i.e., standing firm and keeping Arthur Duncan on her Betty White Show). * We offer many a “Betty-ism” and her philosophy about saying “Yes” no matter what! * Our special guest, Andrea Canny, offers first-hand experience meeting the legend and being forever impressed by her kindness and generosity.
Andrea Canny’s 37-year career has spanned through Asia, Europe, and the USA. Her Disney career began at Disney’s MGM Studios as the original Belle (Beauty and the Beast), original Laverne (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Adventurers Club, and more. She also has a solo CD, Cab Fab, and she recorded the role of Sleeping Beauty for the 10th Anniversary recording of Disenchanted that was released worldwide in September 2019. Ms. Canny co-produced the Emmy Award-nominated & Golden Brick Award-winning concert, From Broadway with Love: Orlando, benefiting 3 Orlando LGBTQ organizations after the Pulse tragedy, featuring Broadway stars, as well as From Broadway with Love: Parkland. 02 Jul 2024 | 173. Conquering Burnout: From Recognition to Recovery - Meet the Author: Julie Bee | 00:42:13
Julie Bee, Millennial, joins Yo to discuss her new book: Burned, How Business Owners Can Overcome Burnout and Fuel Success. In addition to being an author, Julie is a business coach and speaker. She has solidified her reputation as a dynamic consultant, a riveting speaker, and a leader who sheds light on the darker side of business ownership. She shares her personal burnout story and impresses upon us that burnout is an epidemic and overcoming it by taking a vacation, getting more exercise, and incorporating meditation into our days isn’t the advice we all need! Topics covered in the Episode:
Here are three takeaways from the episode:
1. Guilt and shame often show up around burnout. The best way to begin to deal with burnout effectively is to: a. Claim our burnout – drop the guilt and shame! b. Have a support team as you come through it
2. There are 3 different kinds of burnout and we typically go through them in this order: intentional, emotional, and physical. 3. Going on the vacation maybe be a Band-Aid to deal with burnout and not deal with the underlying issue – time and work needs to be taken to recover. You can’t escape the problem.

02 Mar 2022 | 6. Can't we just ditch performance appraisals? | 00:33:50
In this episode Kiki and Yo are joined by Birgit Hueglin-Wood, a Human Resources Executive, and they explore the following questions: · Is there anyone on the planet who likes performance appraisals? · Can performance appraisals do more harm than good? · Why are appraisals still used? · Is there bias that goes into evaluations? · Can we just dump evaluations? · Are companies re-evaluating how performance is evaluated? · What is something people should know about performance evaluations? Particularly Millennials and GenZ women? Women of color? Birgit offers five things to remember when preparing for a performance review: 1. Know that most managers don’t enjoy doing reviews. Many don’t even have the proper skills. So help them be at ease. 2. Assuming that you know the criteria on which you are reviewed, evaluate yourself in advance. Be honest with yourself. 3. Don’t waste your energy on being defensive. 4. If you are criticized for behavioral issues such as poor communication skills, being too pushy with colleagues, being too soft, being too rigid, not following company rules, ask for specific examples and have your manager model how you could have handled a situation better. 5. Don’t let the process intimidate you. No performance review process is perfect - quite the opposite. Go into the conversation with the attitude that both you and your manager just might learn something. More About Birgit: Birgit is a seasoned Human Resources Executive with a huge appetite for helping people succeed in their careers. After two decades in the corporate world, in executive HR roles with Aperian Global and Med America, to name just a few, she has been the Principal and Founder of People @ Work for the past 10 years. In that capacity, she can focus on what she loves the most, coaching individuals and teams to excellence. It ends with the following quote: “I sat down with the universe and told her I wanted to grow. I told her to use me as a vessel. So she made me uncomfortable. She stripped me of everything I knew. Made me learn how to be silent, how to let go, how to move on, how to stand my ground, how to be more understanding, how to fight, how to survive, how to be more assertive, more loving, less naïve, She told me to take everything I have learned and share it with others.” The Minds Journal We hope you’ll join our journey and be inspired to listen to other episodes! 11 Jul 2024 | 175. Do Things Differently: Alicia Berberich on Transforming Lives Through Self-Care, Manifesting, and Gratitude | 00:32:48
Alicia Berberich, GenX Motivation and Manifesting Coach, joins us to talk about how women can care for themselves and be more brilliant. “Too often”, Alicia says, “brilliant women feel stuck and don’t see the possibilities life has available for them”. She is passionate about helping women unleash their true potential to become who they are meant to become. She works with women to release the shackles that bind them to their old ways of thinking so they can achieve their goals. Alicia uses motivation, mindset, and manifesting skills to provide the resources her clients need to move forward with confidence and gusto. And she’ll share many of her insights about these in the episode. Alicia’s motto is: if you want things to be different, do things differently. She has harnessed this philosophy her entire life, from cutting her own hair as a child (much to her mother’s chagrin) to starting a professional women’s network in San Francisco because the local Chamber of Commerce didn’t have one. She believes each person has the power to create a life full of joy.
Topics covered in the Episode: How does the motto about doing things differently impact lives What holds women back from their dreams What are ways women can care for themselves What tools help women identify their Destiny Here are three takeaways from the episode:
1. Transitions can be difficult and sometimes when we go to do things differently we forget we have agency to take the step forward. The key is that we’re used to giving but not receiving and it is in the receiving we get our power and agency back. 2. Tools like mindfulness meditation, journaling, and practicing gratitude can help us deal with the intense feelings that can be holding us back. 3. Some of the best ways to identify our Destiny (future self) is to through energy management which brings forward the energy we experienced when we were “in the flow” to carry us through the present.
Mentioned in the Episode:
Join Alicia’s 31 day challenge to upgrade your mindset. Simple exercises to refresh your thinking are included. Learn more here:
More About Alicia:
Alicia has used the power of manifesting to fulfill a lifelong dream to live in Paris. She has led workshops in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Paris called Unleash Your True Potential. 08 Apr 2024 | 149. Turning Pain into Purpose: The Origin of Blue Faery with Andrea Wilson Woods | 00:35:15
Andrea Wilson Woods, Gen X, joins Yo to discuss the book she’s edited: I’d Rather Be Dead than Deaf. The book is the journal of Adrienne Wilson, a teenage artist, poet, and Andrea’s beloved sister. Before her death from liver cancer at the age of fifteen, Adrienne expressed her funny, bright soul in this prolific journal. Her musings on life, relationships, music, love, and the beautiful grime of her adopted hometown of Los Angeles leap off the page; her deep sensitivity and perspective are captured in full-color prints of her award-winning artwork. We will all relate to their love story! Andrea is a keynote speaker, a writer who loves to tell stories, and a patient advocate who founded the nonprofit Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association. For over ten years, Andrea worked in the education field as a teacher and professor for public and private schools as well as universities. Andrea obtained her master’s degree in professional writing from the University of Southern California; her nonfiction writing has won national awards. Her best-selling and award-winning book, Better Off Bald: A Life in 147 Days, is a medical memoir about raising and losing her sister to liver cancer. Here are the topics we covered:
Here are the three takeaways from the series: 1. Adrienne didn’t see herself as leader but she is taking the lead to teach us about cancer and death
through her art and poetry. 3. Liver cancer is filled with misconceptions with resources lacking to support patients, especially
women, and Andrea’s book provides a voice from a patient to patients. Andrea’s books: Better Off Bald: A Life in 147 Days Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Foundation
More About Andrea: In 2002, Andrea founded Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association after losing her 15-year-old sister Adrienne, whom she raised for seven years, to stage IV liver cancer. Blue Faery’s mission is to prevent, treat, and cure primary liver cancer, specifically hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), through research, education, and advocacy. Andrea established the articles of incorporation; wrote the bylaws, mission statement, and goals; and developed the organizational structure of the corporation. Currently, she attends board meetings, serves on committees, stays informed about liver cancer, and governs the organization. Andrea represents Blue Faery and its mission at conferences, seminars, and special events. Blue Faery has been honored for community service by U.S. Congressman Adam B. This episode is a Girl Take the Lead Sound Bite, a short episode which may be a bit more about a topic we’ve covered like our episode today or a quick inspiration. In our past few episodes we’ve covered friendships – some values we care about and some lovely unexpected magic we find in work friends.

18 Apr 2024 | 152. Defying Expectations: Advice & Wisdom from Kristine Cherek Inspired by 'Tread Loudly' (Part 2) | 00:37:10
Today we continue our conversation with Kristine Cherek to discuss her book Tread Loudly. In addition to being an author, Kristine is an attorney, executive, professor and philanthropist. This is Part 2 of 2 and we will continue 'going for it like Elle Woods" by discussing key data & research findings, and Kristine offers advice for younger generations, plus what she’d tell her 20 something self. Be sure to listen to both parts of our interview. Here are the topics we covered in the series: Work friends and their importance· Having it all (not!) and Perfectionism. Beliefs. Elle Woods. Data (The real issue: normalized gender bias). Quitting is not failure. Here are the three takeaways: 1. We can’t have it all and trying to be perfect robs us of our happiness. Others that we think ‘have it
all’ really don’t. 2. We can begin to change our lives by changing a few beliefs within ourselves. Be determined. Be
ambitious. Believe in yourself and take chances, just like Elle Woods did! 3. Quitting is not failure but can be the only way to achieve success in the long term.
As Mentioned: Her book: Tread Loudly: Call Out the Bullsh*t and Fight for Equality in the Workplace
More About Kristine: Kristine earned her B.A. from Marquette University, and her J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School. She resides with her husband and their two senior rescue cats.
Events: Kristine is currently doing book signings and events at various locations around the country. Follow her on Instagram for the latest updates!

18 Jun 2024 | 169. Suparna Vashisht: Creating Pathways to Sustainability, Conservation, Gender Equality and Mental Wellbeing | 00:46:10
Suparna Vashisht joins us to talk about her passions: driving social change in the areas of sustainability, conservation, gender equality, and mental wellbeing. She's a founder of Women Back to Work, an initiative that helps create systemic pathways for women wanting to re-enter the workforce. For the last 20 years she has worked for conservation nonprofits in the areas of strategy, communications, and development. Suparna helps us learn about some fabulous nonprofits that are doing great acts of kindness to sustain the planet and the animals in it.
Topics covered in the Episode:
Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1. Everyone has their own way of being persuaded to take action – one message does not fit everyone. Find the one that can persuade someone to make a change for the greater good.
2. There are so many different ways to take action – like eating organically, composting, reducing our use of plastic, or supporting not-for-profit groups. It’s all of us individually having a positive impact through our choices and actions.
3. Women trying to return to work after a break face challenges and barriers – a system for diversity
hiring needs to include these women! Mentioned in the Episode:

https://www.sierraclub.org/volunteer https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/ https://www.plasticpollutioncoalition.org/takeaction/guides
Video of one of the turtles Suparna spotted that the team from Marine Institute was able to rescue and release (after 6 weeks of treatment!). She got to name her when they found her and chose the name Ikaika, meaning powerful (in Hawaiian). https://www.instagram.com/p/C6IRQVMr93J/?igsh=a3ZubWkyY3BraGl0
More Resources From Suparna:
Personal Choices/Action 1. According to the UN, our lifestyles are responsible for an estimated two thirds of global emissions and our individual choices have the power to reduce total global emissions by up to 70% by the year 2050. https://www.un.org/en/actnow/facts-and-figures 2. UN Environment Programme has free 3 hour online course on sustainable lifestyle
Plastic Pollution -Info and Action 1. https://www.plasticpollutioncoalition.org 2. https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/10/12/1081129/plastic-recycling-climate-change-microplastics/
Hawaii - Turtles and Whales 1. Land based pollution affects turtles (tumors) 2. Climate change affects turtles - wiped out island where turtles nest 3. Climate change will make 30-67% of humpback whale breeding grounds too warm More About Suparna: Suparna would like people to become more engaged in conservation in whatever way is feasible for them. For example, join the local chapter of Sierra Club, incorporate a few sustainability practices in their daily life, take action to protect the ocean or other natural environment, buy from companies that follow sustainable practices, etc.
Suparna gives talks on ocean conservation, sustainability, and mental wellbeing. She also runs workshops for Women Back to Work through the San Jose Public library. Ping her if you would like to host a talk or workshop.

16 Feb 2024 | 134. Friendship Realities: Fizzles, Changes, and Coping Strategies | 00:15:55
This episode continues our conversation about Friendships started in Ep 131 with NoorJehan Tourte and continued for the next 2 episodes. This episode explores why friendships end and how we can cope with their loss. Here are the three takeaways from today’s episode: 1. When friendships end there can be potential pain and shame, especially when there is a lack of clarity or closure. 2. Open communication can help maintain friendships and we can address changes in communication patterns, express concerns, and be willing to have difficult conversations can potentially save a friendship. The idea that "friendships heal by making the unsaid said" underscores the importance of discussing issues rather than silently withdrawing. 3. We need to normalize ending friendships as an aspect of life allow ourselves to experience and express a range of emotions, including grief and we need to exam our own contributions to friendship dynamics.

14 May 2024 | 159 Cultural Integration, Emotions and Ego: Irene Sim's Perspective on Leadership | 00:36:02
Irene Sim joins us to discuss some topics I think you’ll find interesting like the power of emotions, new thinking habits, systemic bias and racism, and emotions and ego. Such good stuff!
Irene is the Managing Director of Coaching Alliance Group, an accredited Executive Leadership Coach, Mentor and Facilitator. Her career is amazing. She was the inaugural Chief of Staff at APEC and first Asian woman to be promoted to the Senior Executive Service of the Australian Treasury and the Australian Taxation Office. AND she was the first Asian woman that the Australian Treasury posted overseas diplomatically as the Minister-Counsellor to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Here are the topics we covered in the episode: 3:12 Power of emotions & leadership 7:33 New thinking habits 11:52 Bringing cultures together by removing systemic bias/racism 21:44 The effect of emotions and ego Here are the three takeaways: 1. Let's look at emotions look at comfortable or uncomfortable not good or bad. They can be our “north
star” guiding us to act in alignment with our deepest values and to be more resilient. Accept them, allow them and then do something constructive with
them. 2. Having an inclusive mindset is about being curious and move away from the assumption that the way I see the world is the only way to see the world. 3. One habit to break up the “all about me” and the disconnection from the other. We can look at an issue together, rather than making it personal by blaming judging or defending against the other. This allows alignment.
More About Irene: Irene coaches women at all stages of their journey to break free from societal biases to set their own terms and to thrive as powerful and authentic leaders on their own terms. Irene also coaches entire organizations on how to provide allyship support to one another, to remove systemic biases.

31 Aug 2023 | 95. Our Top 5 Barbie Movie Takeaways & The Leadership Skills We Admired! | 00:35:33
Canny girls, Emma and Kiki, are back in the house to join Yo. The 3 of us recently went to see the movie, Barbie, together and wanted to share some of our key takeaways. When originally thinking about the movie and doing an episode around it, I wondered if it might be too silly but what really convinced me to see the movie was hearing the monologue Gloria makes in the movie about it being literally impossible to be a woman which began with: “You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.” And Gloria continues to outline all the expectations and I knew I was in. See link below. “Spoiler Alert”: we will cover some of the plot and quotes from different scenes. So if you’d rather not know these and are going to go see the movie maybe skip this episode? You can come back to it after you see the movie and we hope you’ll let us know what you think! And I should also say the three of us were big fans of the movie and if you saw the movie and didn’t like it, we’d love to hear your thoughts. We also understand if you’d rather skip the episode. And if you didn’t like it and still listen to our episode we applaud you and thank you for your empathy and respectful understanding. We clearly see it’s not a film for everyone!
3 Episode Takeaways: 1. All 3 of us were a thumbs up – casting, screenplay, set design, and production all hit the mark. 2. Probably our favorite Barbie was anxiety ridden depressed Barbie - she comes with sweatpants, eats through a family sized bag of starburst until her jaw hurts and then watches the BBC's pride and prejudice. 3. Barbie had some leadership skills we admired: communication, partnering, listening with empathy, courageous, problem solving, and strategizing.
As Mentioned in the Episode:
Gloria’s monologue about the impossibility of being a woman.

This is a "Girl, Take the Lead!" Sound Bite, which is a shorter episode, building on Ep 149 with Andrea Wilson Woods about her Blue Faery Foundation and the launch of the book she edited, I’d Rather Be Dead than Deaf. We thought you might like to hear some passages from that book to feel inspired during your day. You might want to check out the video form of this episode to see some of Adrienne’s artwork. You can see a clip here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/272025931481748
As Mentioned: Andrea’s books: I’d Rather Be Dead Than Deaf Better Off Bald: A Life in 147 Days Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Foundation
Schiff, California State Senator Jack Scott, and the County of Los Angeles, and was inducted into the Burbank Business Hall of Fame for receiving the Best of Burbank Charity Award from 2013 – 2017.

30 Sep 2022 | 36. Part 2 of 2 - A Discussion: Susan Cain's Quiet, The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking | 00:26:14
Andrea Boerries, Consultant, Member of Society International Development, DGVN (United Nations Association Germany) and DGAP (German Council of Foreign Relations), terrific thought partner, joins Yo to discuss Susan Cain’s book, Quiet. Andrea brings a global perspective to help us see being an introvert as a human phenomenon we can be proud to be. Because of the depth of our conversation and richness of the content, we decided to make this into two parts. Here’s how the discussion went: · How has the book uncovered our own tendencies toward being an introvert? · How can companies help acknowledge introverts in their training efforts? · Are there characteristics of Gen Zers that could be more introverted than other generations? · How did reading this book change our thinking about being an introvert? · How can teachers and other leaders help introverts learn to be comfortable leading? During the episode, Andrea mentioned a few additional sources that might be helpful: 1. German Book, English translation 2. Aguas, J. (2019) Millenial and Generation Z's Perspectives on Leadership Effectiveness in Emerging Leadership Journeys Vol. 13, Issue 1, @Regent University School of Business and Leadership 3. Prof. Dr. Amarendra Bushan Dhiraj, (03/24/2022), Quote on Satya Nadella, CEO and Chairman, Microsoft, Redmond, WA. in CEO World Magazine, @ceoworld.biz. After graduation in 1981 and finishing her German diploma, she spent 2 years traveling the world as an air hostess with Lufthansa, went to Paris, France and received a language diploma, worked in a consultancy and got hired as an event manager in an advertising agency in Hamburg. She went on to work in the advertising business as a client consultant while pursuing a degree in Marketing and Communication. She started her family in 1994, moved to Silicon Valley and stayed for 10 years. In 2007, her daughter got very sick and she changed her life style completely to become healthier and strong to best support her family during this time. She became a yoga teacher but had a severe accident which led to numerous surgeries and couldn’t continue teaching yoga. She always enjoyed following politics, and after participating in a few online classes (Women’s Health and HR, Stanford, Sustainability, Columbia, Intro to Intl. Development, Cambridge), she settled for studying International Development at University of Cambridge, England. While in Cambridge, she volunteered as an intern for NGOs in Kenia, Myanmar and India. She also worked as a volunteer in the Hamburg refugee program for a year in school administration and founded and built a refugee camp library. She received an invite to further her education in Sustainability in a summer program at the UN Systems Staff College in Bonn. 11 Jan 2024 | 125. Discussing the book: Let it Be Easy by Susie Moore | 00:16:51
For the past couple episodes we’ve been looking at play and leadership what also comes to mind for me is that leadership needs to be easy And it just so happens that Susie Moore has a book on this very topic. So for our first book of 2024 we’ll be covering Let It Be Easy…almost sounds like a prayer, no?
A little about Susie Moore – she’s a life coach and advice columnist for some of the world’s biggest media outlets and she has a podcast. She was a sales director and advisor for Silicon Valley and NY start-ups. She is a native of England, and now lives and works in Miami.
In her introduction Susie says “…the core purpose of your life is to enjoy it and one of the first distinctions she brings up is our ability to overcomplicate things – anyone else ever do that? Here are 3 takeaways from today’s episode: 1. Asking ourselves, How Can I make this easier for myself?,
can truly help us stop stressing and start living! 2. In addition to Susie’s book, we can look at starting habits
and looking at workflow to live easier. 3. We are the ones who get in our own way – whether it’s perfectionism, taking things personally, or holding a resentment – they keep us playing smaller and living a way more complicated life. Let’s choose easier when we can.

10 Aug 2022 | 29. Love Notes to Our Younger Selves: What would You Tell Your High School Self Today? | 00:55:36
It’s a trip back to Alemany High School Class of ’72 with Terri, Cindy, Sharon, Janey, and Colleen, who join Yo, also from the Alemany Class of ‘72, to share what they’d tell their younger selves and young women today. All of us had been on a committee to plan our 50th reunion with Janey leading the way and there was so much love, understanding, and support for each other – no matter who we were in high school. Here are the questions we explored: · Who did we see ourselves being in high school? · Who are we now? · What would you tell yourself, or another young woman, about your learning along the way? · What was the experience like for you on the reunion committee? · Why should others attend (and help plan) their class reunions? “"It's the oldest story in the world. One day you're seventeen and planning for someday, and then quietly and without you ever really noticing, someday is today, and that someday is yesterday. And this is your life." — One Tree Hill You can contact anyone on the episode via Yo: Public FB group: Girl, Take the Lead! https://www.facebook.com/groups/272025931481748/?ref=share IG: https://www.instagram.com/yocanny LinkedIn:
20 Jul 2022 | 26. What do emotions (reference: Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown, Bittersweet by Susan Cain) have to do with patriotism? | 00:26:22
Beliefs about “what is it to be an American” can inform how we lead. Yo was intrigued this July 4th about patriotism, the emotions surrounding it, and how they inform how we lead. This episode discusses recent Gallup poll research, presents key articles and blog about the topic, plus includes some input from friends on the subject. Also included are passages from the books Atlas of the Heart and Bittersweet. Shout out to special input from Melissa Brunetti, Christina Vine, and Linda Gardner Crandall!! Thank you. Here are some of the questions covered: · What is patriotism and nationalism? How are they different? · What are recent Gallup Poll results about American’s pride? · What emotions could be at play given the Gallup Poll trend? · What insights could at work within the U.S.? Here are the links to articles and recordings covered in the episode: Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (definitions) Melissa Brunetti (Mind Your Own Karma podcast) Twenty Years of Data Show How America Changed – and Stayed the Same – After 9/11 (by Philip Elliott) Sandra J. 22 Aug 2024 | 186. The Fearless Woman Who Dares: Kamala Harris and Her Leadership Style, Insights from Dan Morain’s Kamala’s Way | 00:24:34
This month we’ve been covering stories about fearless leadership and perhaps like you have been intrigued by the political landscape this month and seeing Kamala Harris emerge as what one can only describe as fearless. So I dug in and found some sources that can help us elements of her leadership that we’ve been covering on the show. Topics Covered: Early inspirations Competition Determination Resilience Networking Empathy
Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1. Kamala Harris is breaking the mold for women when it comes to leadership. Her early foundation (mother-inspired, Berkeley in the 60s) set her on a course to be an advocate, empathy, and insights into politics. 2. Kamala has designed her own way (blended family, Presidential run in 2020) and is an example of learning from failure and demonstrating resilience. 3. One of Kamala’s greatest strengths are her people skills: networking, building influence and creating alliances.

19 Oct 2023 | 109. More About Unlocking Happiness: Emotion Management | 00:14:30
Today’s episode builds on our previous episode about the Arthur Brooks and Oprah Winfrey book: 'Build the Life You Want' – The Art and Science of Getting Happier. The authors brought a ton of information about emotions that we didn’t have time to cover so today’s episode will go deeper into what they have to say. As I read the book, I broke up the emotional self-management sections into 6 steps which can be a path to make us much happier as a person freeing us from being managed by your feelings. Yay!! At the end of the discussion about emotions, Oprah says this: “…today, everything I do, anything I make, any suggestion I float or advice I give – it’s all about the offering. If it works, it works. If it’s accepted, it’s accepted. If not, I have lost nothing because I had no attachment to a particular result.” This she says has made her a much, much happier life and she wishes the same for all of us. 02 Aug 2023 | 86. Book Discussion: Machiavelli for Women by Stacey Vanek Smith – 500 Years Later & What He Says About Leadership | 00:18:40
When you hear the name Machiavelli, what do you think? Historical figure? His work “The Prince” which offered pragmatic and often controversial advice to rules on how to gain and maintain power? Maybe an Amoral Realist who believed the end justifies the means and that rules should be ready to employ deceit and cruelty to achieve their goals? And if someone uses the adjective “Machiavellian” it’s done so to describe cunning and manipulative behavior? Maybe not a good thing, right? I know I thought some of those things myself but after reading Stacey Vanek Smith’s book Machiavelli for Women I learned a lot more about Machiavelli and came to appreciate the lessons he can offer all of us about leadership and power. And our hope after listening to this podcast, you will too! So I ask you to suspend any prior beliefs you may have about Machiavelli and let’s open yourself ourselves up to hearing about this man’s writing done during the Renaissance period and their application to us today as proposed by the author! 3 Episode Takeaways 1. No, you’re not crazy. The no-win situation is real but we can navigate all kinds of ways and Machiavelli offers us insights into doing just that. 2. The Cinderella Syndrome and the Hotbox can be a disadvantage but by being aware of them can open up new possibilities by changing the story. 3. Facing the bias monster will mean embracing the hardship and struggle. 30 Oct 2024 | 197. Navigating Political Anxiety: Mindfulness, Tribalism, and Emotional Triggers Before Election Day. Part 1 of 2. | 00:20:30
In many of our past episodes we’ve uncovered aspects of emotions that can come up when we’re stressed plus this month we’re looking into the topic of conflict so today’s episode goes into both these areas by looking at the political anxiety many of us may be experiencing around the upcoming Presidential election. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum we seem to all experiencing the same sensation of fear resulting from the polarization we’re feeling. We thought it might be helpful to take a deeper look at this by exploring the what and the why when it comes to feeling this way, particularly as election day approaches. We’ll call on 3 experts to guide us: Rick Hanson, Amy Chua, and Drew Westen Ph.D. Rick Hanson, Ph.D., is a neuropsychologist and New York Times best-selling author. His books include Hardwiring Happiness, Buddha's Brain, Just One Thing, Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness. He’ll help us learn more about mindfulness and emotional regulation.
And Amy Chua is author of the Political Tribes: Group Instinct and the Fate of Nations. She is a noted expert in the fields of ethnic conflict and globalization and will help us learn about tribalism and identity politics.
Drew Westen, author The Political Brain, The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation, is a clinical, personality, and political psychologist and neuroscientist. He will help us see how emotions, particularly fear and anger influence politics.
This will be a 2 part series. This is the episode covering the pre-election and the other will be post-election.
Topics Covered: Political Anxiety Defined Rick Hanson’s Concept of “Paper Tiger Paranoia” Virtuous Conduct Tribalism and Identity Politics (Amy Chua) Emotions in Politics (Drew Westen) Statistics on the 2024 Election Campaign (Pew Research Center) Mindfulness, Empathy, and Connection
Here are 3 takeaways from our episode:
1. Political anxiety, driven by high-stakes issues like abortion and climate change, is often intensified by our brain's tendency to overestimate threats, known as "paper tiger paranoia." Mindfulness can help manage these fears by grounding us in reality and reducing the sense of being overwhelmed. 2. Tribalism, as described by Amy Chua, worsens political anxiety by creating an "us vs. them" mentality. While polarization grows, she remains optimistic that local, community-driven efforts can bridge divides and foster empathy. 3. Emotions in politics play a major role in voter decision-making, with campaigns often exploiting fear and anger. Drew Westen highlights that positive emotions, like hope and authenticity, can inspire greater political engagement and help alleviate political anxiety.

09 Jan 2024 | 124. Come On: Click the Play Button! | 00:21:57
In Ep 123 we put forward some questions that Brené Brown offered us that I had to research. She called it Wholehearted adult play. And I was really struck by this: Play? Do I play? Do I play enough? What is play anyway? I was kind of terrified I wasn’t fun or playing in my life!
So I found there’s an actual National Institute for Play (NIFP) which is a non-profit public benefit corporation dedicated to advancing society’s understanding and application of play — a long-ignored biological capability that can lead to healthier, happier lives.
I also think that the best bosses I ever had were very playful. One of them was so good at it, she did a side gig as a stand-up comic and was quite good! Corporate life gave her lots of great material.

25 Aug 2022 | 31. Holly Springs/Fuquay-Varina & Apex Liberal Ladies, NC: Leading the way by walking the walk! | 00:23:07
Sarah Crandall, a member of the Holly Springs/Fuquay-Varina And Apex Liberal Ladies organization, joins Yo to discuss what they do to support their community by promoting progressive values. Here’s a little bit about the politics of North Carolina (source: Wikipedia): Like most U.S. states, North Carolina is politically dominated by the Democratic and Republican political parties. North Carolina has 13 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and two seats in the U.S. Senate. North Carolina has voted for the Republican candidate in nine of the last 10 presidential elections; the one exception was in 2008, when a plurality of North Carolinians voted for Barack Obama. Conversely, North Carolina has mostly elected Democratic governors in its history; only four Republican governors have been elected since Reconstruction, and of those only one served two terms. Here are the questions we explored:

15 Nov 2023 | 116. PART 2 - Inside Out: Unveiling the Layers of Internal Family Systems (IFS) with Uri Talmor | 00:24:03
This is Part 2 of a 2 part series with our guest, Uri Talmor (Gen X) and Kiki Canny returned to join our discussion about Internal Family Systems (IFS) based on the book, No Bad Parts, by Richard Schwartz, PhD. As we noted in Part 1, Kiki had recommended the book and as we read it, we realized it would be great to have an expert on the subject and Uri was that expert. In Part 1, Uri, Kiki and I talked about what IFS was and the elements of the different roles within our parts. Uri explained why IFS works so well, and the benefits of the method. We sure hope you enjoy the listen as much as you did Part 1! 3 Takeaways:
1. The “being born good in the world” belief can be looked at best from a Polyvagal Theory perspective. A link is below to learn more. 2. We are such complex beings and we make judgements of others when we’re trying to control and by staying curious it can help us avoid labeling others. 3. IFS helps us reorganize our psyche. All three of us totally recommend the book, No Bad Parts. Try the audio to get his voice on the meditations.

Peter Yaholkovsky and his partner in life, Sue Staker, Boomers, join Yo to discuss Peter’s book, Listening for Candor: Building Trust in Relationships that Matter, which illuminates a path for trust conversations by starting with a shared sense of what matters. Peter has an extensive background in the linguistic foundations of trust and communication, having studied and worked with Dr. Fernando Flores since the 1980's and being certified by the Strozzi Institute as a Master Somatic Coach. Over the past three decades, Peter has coached families and executive teams in building and restoring trust. In addition to being life partners for 25 years, Peter and Sue worked together as part of the Williams Group team to bring trust building skills to wealthy families. Topics covered in this 2-part series: What is candor and how can it build trust with others? What is the role that emotionality and intention play in relationships? How does trust differ in personal and professional settings? What does power have to do with listening with candor? What elements need to be present to “save” a relationship and when to let it go? 3 takeaways from the series: The “truth” of Candor is sincerity about one’s intention and care—about ‘what matters’—a departure from speaking “honestly” or being “right” about the past. Sincere engagement is to want to understand another more fully. Vulnerability to a power differential can wreak havoc in conversations when “what matters” is protecting oneself from the risks of engagement. For this past month we’ve been talking about connections and some have been global, some have been local, and others have been non-human. Today we’ll build a bit more on those topics by covering the book, Together, by Dr. Vicek Murthy, Surgeon General of the United States, and I’ll share a real example of connection which occurred during my 50 year Chi Omega sorority reunion and some of the accounts by those who attended. This is a Girl Take the Lead Sound Bite which is a short episode which may be a bit more about a topic we’ve covered like our episode today or a quick inspiration. This episode builds on Tara Mohr’s book, Playing Big, which we covered in our previous episode.
Here are 3 takeaways from today’s episode:
1. As women transition from student mode to career they need the ability to improvise, challenge authority, trust they already know and make their work visible. 2. Knowing your personal brand can help us know our value and build our confidence. 3. Probably the hardest thing for us in Playing Big, is making our work known and building awareness of it. 23 Jul 2024 | 178. Self-Care in Times of Change: Anne Shoemaker's Advice on Letting Go of Control | 00:27:02
Anne is a career advisor, strategist, and coach for executive and aspiring executive women. She applies her 20+ years of experience as an executive and leader in corporate, non-profit, privately held, and early-stage startup businesses toward supporting and elevating women into positions of influence in their careers and communities.
Through 1:1 and group coaching, speaking engagements, and workshops, Anne helps women unlock their potential so they can reach new levels of impact and fulfillment. Her portfolio of coaching clients is comprised of women who are CxOs, legislators, entrepreneurs, and professionals who are considering steering their career in a new direction - and want a co-pilot to help them navigate.
Topics covered in the Episode:
Here are three takeaways from the episode:
1. One type of change that comes to us is via our intuition – a kind of inner steering and we try to discern how much volume to give that inner voice. Key is to quiet everything else so we can hear our inner voice and find our ‘inner knowing’. Mindful Mediation or journaling can help find the silence and quiet. 2. We don’t need to compromise ourselves – we can find our own space to just be ourselves. Exploring what we want to do and who we are is not enough – we need to take action and ‘do it’. It can start with action that is low risk so we learn and adjust. 3. Most of us think success is reaching a destination but the journey and the steps taken can be success. Control can jump in and derail our efforts. If we hold too tight we can miss our own energy shifts. More About Anne: Anne was originally a Kentucky-girl and grew up playing soccer and running after her big brother. She took her pursuit of soccer through college and played at the professional level. Her tenacity as a young girl was the foundation of her 10 year career in corporate and her coaching business today. Anne currently lives in North Carolina with her family.

11 Jun 2024 | 167. Empowering Women in Philanthropy: Heather McLeod Grant Redefines Traditional Giving | 00:40:18
Heather McLeod Grant (GenX), social impact and philanthropy advisor, thought leader, and social entrepreneur with 30+ years expertise in strategy, leadership, governance, networks, and leadership for social change joins Yo to talk about women and philanthropy.
Did you know that there will be a massive asset-transfer of $30T over the next decade? And some estimate women will control 60-70% of the giving and control 85% of purchasing decisions?
Heather lets us know that philanthropy doesn’t look like the balding, white guy with a top hat. It looks like us! Women are going to be a significant story when it comes to giving in 10-20 years.
Topics covered in the Episode: Trends in philanthropy Key statistics related to women’s giving Giving Circles: what are they and how do they work Women making a big splash in philanthropy Key questions we should ask ourselves when it comes to our philanthropic journey
Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1. Women are stepping up and getting more involved – it’s not just men – and other trends include that donors are giving while living and tend to be younger.
2. Women give differently than men - they are more community centric, more diversified in their giving, and less interested in having their name on a building.
3. Giving circles are massively growing with more than 2500 nationwide. They serve as way to amplify
the gift and democratize philanthropy. You can contact Yo to learn more. Mentioned in the Episode: Authored by Heather:

Yo shares her learning from Terri Cole’s book, Boundary Boss, which has helped her enormously understand her tendency to perfectionism and having such a hard time saying no to things. Hard to be a good leader if you’re worried about doing things perfectly. Can you relate? Terri offers us the opportunity to break free from over-functioning, over-delivering, people-pleasing, and ignoring our own needs so we can finally live the life we all deserve! Whew, it is beyond “yummy” and “juicy” – it is mind-altering for sure!! 16 Oct 2024 | 195. Jimmy Carter’s Enduring Legacy: Peace, Music, and Leadership | 00:17:50
This month we’ve been talking about grief and this episode could be an example of anticipatory grief because we’re talking about Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States who recently on Oct 1 celebrated his 100th birthday. Our hope is that you'll be inspired by this short Sound Bite episode. There is a ton of things to admire about him – I recently shared some of them with some Millennials I know who said, "Wow, I had no idea" so we're taking the opportunity today to share some of my learning with you about this man. Topics Covered: President Carter’s key accomplishments in and out of office Why Jimmy Carter is the Rock ‘n Roll President Carter’s friendship with musicians A marketing innovator when it came to campaign events His quotes about leadership
Here are 3 takeaways from our episode: 1. Jimmy Carter certainly deserves to be called the Rock ‘n Roll president. He saw music as the one thing we all have in common no matter where live. 2. Jimmy inspires us to have faith, do what we believe to be right, no matter how much others may see as ‘inappropriate’. 3. While some will not look kindly on his time as President, he is an inspiring, decent human being. Thank you, Mr. President, for all you have done. I am already grieving our loss.

Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1. Naysayers can get in the way and keep us down and the key is to believe in yourself. Sometimes you surprise yourself. The sky is not the limit.

Naysayers are usually people not as successful as us and our cheerleaders usually are. 3. You’ll find you need help so it’s important to find mentors who know more than us. We need to own who you are, the good and the bad, and acknowledge how far we’ve come. Also important is to avoid comparing yourself to others, only compare yourself to where you want to be and where you are. 03 Aug 2023 | 87. More About Machiavelli for Women: Money, Knowing & Negotiating | 00:08:59
You may remember from Ep 86 where we discussed Machiavelli for Women by Stacey Vanek Smith. In today’s episode we got a bit deeper into that book where she wrote one of the main ways power is reflected in the workplace is pay. Oh Yeah! She states that after closing the pay gap between 1980 and 2000, the gap stopped shrinking. More and more women got degrees and entered the workforce, but the pay gap didn’t really budge. In this episode we’ll explore why that could be the case. Enjoy the listen!! 20 Jun 2024 | 170. Species Loneliness: Understanding Our Need for Animal Connections – Insights from Richard Louv’s book, Our Wild Calling. | 00:20:11
This is a Girl Take the Lead Sound Bite – which is a shorter episode which is a bit more about the topic in our most recent episode. After hearing Suparna Vashisht talk about sea turtles and coyotes previously, I knew I wanted to learn a bit more about how we connect with animals. So I found a book, Our Wild Calling, How connecting with animals can transform our lives – and save theirs by Richard Louv. One of the book reviews said that it offers hope. While this review and title of the book were wonderful, what really got me was the most amazing wolf picture on the front cover – I’m telling you that just pulled me right in – I felt connected to the golden eyes and sweet face of that wolf! Similar to the different causes Suparna mentioned, this book makes a case for protecting, promoting, and creating a sustainable and shared habitat for all creatures – not out of fear, but out of love.
Mentioned in the Episode:
More About Richard Louv: Louv has written for the New York Times, Outside, Orion, Sierra, and many other publications. He appears regularly on national radio and TV, and lectures throughout the world.
