30 Jan 2025Ed Wood00:41:13

Ed Wood! The story of real life director Ed Wood and the making of the so bad it’s good film “Plan 9 from Outer Space.” Easily Burton's best film, before he became a parody of himself. Johnny Depp's optimistic portrayal of the "worst director of all time" is infectious. Ed Wood will have you fall in love with an unlikely hero and his dreams of becoming a film marker. With a strong supporting performance from Martin Landau as Bella Lugosi. This movie shows the pitfalls of success and the difficulty of maintaining relevancy , as well as the importance of friendship in dark moments. You can't help but smile at this celebration of Ed Wood and his legacy.

Join me as I do this in one take, because "I am the director!!! I make the decisions!!"

01 Apr 2025Rain Man00:52:57

A bonus episode for autism awareness month.  Rain man. The first portrayal of autism in film and one of my favourites of all time. This film brought mainstream awareness to autism at a time it was poorly understood. Although overtime there is more nuanced discussions to be had. This film shows how terrible misunderstanding and treatment people on the spectrum in the 20th century. It highlights the difficulties families can face particularly in this time period of institutionalization and shame. This film also shows the beauty of autism and some of the amazing things that people on the spectrum bring to our world. Dustin Hoffman’s brilliant performance is based on real people he worked with for over a year in order to portray Raymond with the respect and accuracy he deserved. He thanked the men he based his performance on in his acceptance speech for their work. Dr Ruth Sullivan consulted on the film to assist with the portrayal of autistic individuals and their experiences. Although through a 2025 lens we can discuss the importance for more diverse portrayals of autism across the spectrum,  the implications of the term “savant” and having a non autistic actor in the role. At the time this film was the first, and still is one of the only films to have an autistic character protagonist. As a proud family member of the most beautiful individual with autism this film touches my soul in a way I can’t explain. I’m so grateful to have such a beautiful story available to the public. Please enjoy this bonus episode. This month, and every month please bring awareness, kindness and curiosity to autism. Advocate for people on the spectrum and their families. Let’s do better in cinema going forward to amplify the voices of people on the spectrum and have more nuanced portrayals.

17 Feb 2025Making of a Legend: Gone with the Wind00:38:18

Making of a Legend Gone with the Wind

A disclaimer:

This is a disclaimer that will be at the start of every episode relating to this movie.

Gone with the Wind is the 1939 film based on Margret Mitchell’s 1936 novel of the same name. It is set in the antebellum south and the reconstruction era. It is told from the point of view of slave owners who long for the civilization that has Gone with the Wind. It is full of revisionist history and  false narratives surrounding the atrocities committed by white slaver holders and the confederacy. I feel this film is important to review and discuss. We must understand the history of systemic oppression in media in order to properly move into the future and ensure it does not repeat itself. Gone with the Wind and films like it must be examined with a critical eye in order to identify propaganda, and white washing when we see it.

I will attempt to handle this subject as best as I can as a white women who is from Canada, and I do acknowledge that I am not able to understand full nuance as it is not my lived experienced.

And to anyone listening who is bothered by a statement like this or any warnings like it that appear before films because you find it “woke” or “unnecessary” this isn’t the podcast for you. I am committed to my own learning and unpacking of systemic racism and if that bothers you, you are part of the problem.

27 Mar 2025Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed00:33:11

Jinkies! Can it be? A live action adaption of a cartoon I actually like? Well folks my snobby self hates to admit it but I do love the Scooby doo adaptions, particularly the sequel. I  know I know I know, you don’t need to tell it goes against all I believe in. I know I’m a hypocrite I accept it.

Seriously though I love this campy classic. This is the the ultimate cartoon adaption. It tries to be nothing more than the cartoon in which it’s based. (with an original mystery however, WB didn’t phone it in like Disney)

With I think arguably the best casting a film has ever had? Absolutely ICONIC! I love every bit of this little cheesy film and it will forever be in my top 10.  I don’t care what anyone says it’s great.

So get your favourite latex orange jumpsuit, a box of Scooby Snacks and let’s fucking do this 🔎 👀 👣
