05 Sep 2023Desire Discrepancy and other questions direct from you: Q&A with Dr. Kate 00:32:42
Dr. Kate loves getting questions from you, the listener, about anything on your mind, no matter how bold, embarrassing, or shocking. Not much phases this Sex Therapist. So, please keep your questions coming. Email your questions to: question@getnakedpodcast.com  This episode covers one question about Kate’s trajectory to becoming a psychologist and how and where one can get credentialed in the specific area of Sex Therapist. She also answers a question from a woman who experienced sexual trauma much earlier in her life, and her question reveals that her husband “gifted” her a vibrator and the very complex reactions she has to this present.  Dr. Kate gets into it and reminds us maybe his own need for getting his wife more interested in sex was actually dismissing the effects of making her feel less than, shamed and other undesirable emotions. Dr. Kate suggests ideas to bridge the gap of desire discrepancy and how “waning” libido can be for many reasons that need to be discovered together. She shares a reminder: Intentions and actual impact can be very different. Dr. Kate also answers a question from another listener which has some of the same theme. He is sexually frustrated and wants to hear how he can have open communication about it. Again, desire discrepancy is part of the situation. Kate makes a big point of not guilting or shaming your partner, ever. Again, Dr. Kate gives ideas of how to address solutions together and suggest other ways to cultivate connection with your partner. Listen and leave a rating and review below if you can. And remember to send in any question you may not be able to ask others about. Dr. Kate loves an interactive platform that is here to help you. 04 Jul 2023The Wheel of Consent: The Art of Giving & Receiving with Dr. Betty Martin00:42:00
Dr. betty martin has had her hands on people professionally for over 40 years, first as a Chiropractor and upon retiring from that practice, as a certified Surrogate Partner, Sacred Intimate, and Somatic Sex Educator. Her explorations in somatic-based therapy and practices informed her creation of the framework, The Wheel of Consent®. As part of her work with The School of Consent, betty travels around the world teaching practitioners how to create empowered agreements in their client sessions, in her highly sought-after training “Like A Pro: The Wheel of Consent for Practitioners.” Originally developed as an offering to teach much-needed consent skills to sex workers and touch providers, this training is now attended by somatic therapists, massage therapists, sexuality educators, medical and health care workers, activists, human resources folks and the spectrum of touch-based professional providers – all of whom complete the training with a clear understanding of how consent starts with our own bodies, and then expands outwards into all forms of human relating, with or without touch. Dr. Kate and Dr. betty talk about the 3 Minute Game: founded on two questions: "What do you want me to do to you?" and "What do you want to do to me?" which uncover so much, including how detached we are from knowing what we really want and what we are truly comfortable with. We learn that until we get in touch with what we want, it is difficult to give and receive authentically. And until that, we are potentially giving and receiving but actually getting resentful and angry, as we stand disconnected from our wants, and performing to what we believe our partner wants, acting as if it is all good. Learn tools to discover more about yourself and your sexual or non-sexual giving and receiving with a partner, co-worker, client, etc. It can be liberating step toward balanced relationships. __ Email your questions to: question@getnakedpodcast.com Stay Connected with Dr. Kate: IG: https://www.instagram.com/themodernintimacy/ https://www.instagram.com/drkatebalestrieri/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/drkatebalestrieri/ https://www.tiktok.com/modernintimacy/ Visit www.modernintimacy.com Learn more about your ad choices. Hope Ray, LPC CSAT CHFP CCPS is a therapist, theoretician and the pioneer of Complex Partner Trauma (CPT), a complete framework that pinpoints the endangerment betrayed partners face when their significant others use abusive deception to hide fidelity violating behavior. 27 Jun 2023Awareness of Emotional Labor: Uncompensated and Not Valued with Rose Hackman00:50:45
In 2015, while working as a features writer for The Guardian in New York City, Rose wrote a widely-circulated article on emotional labor, which radically changed her way of understanding how power, gender and race affect the most intimate ways in which people relate to one another. Her research on emotional labor in the eight years since — as an invisible, devalued, feminized and yet essential form of work — has sought to drastically reframe our view of women, work and the nature of persistent inequality.  In 2013, she graduated with a master’s degree in Human Rights from Columbia University, where she focused on social and economic rights violations in the United States.  Rose’s first book, Emotional Labor, is out now.   Dr. Kate and Rose talk about: Women are expected to play an impossible game: show compassion and submission while being assertive and confident How women have to put feelings aside in order to make others’ feel more comfortable.  How this is expected behavior, and raises heads if not acted out Emotional labor is uncompensated work to make others’ feel better. The book is not just about white women and not just heterosexual dynamics. Our society does not value Emotional Labor. How can we change the dynamics of Emotional Labor so that is more equal and works in a way to better society? Listen to the conversation as Rose and Dr. Kate uncover the insidious prevalence of this, and all it effects, while bringing to light ways to possibly fix this into creating a better society. 22 Aug 2023Birthing and the Power Men Have Over Medical Choices with Allison Yarrow00:48:21
Allison Yarrow is an award-winning journalist, speaker, and author of Birth Control: The Insidious Power of Men Over Motherhood (Hachette/Seal Press, July 2023).  She is also the author of 90s Bitch: Media, Culture, and the Failed Promise of Gender Equality (Harper Perennial, 2018). She has written about health, politics, and gender for many publications including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Vox, Insider, USA Today, Time, and Newsweek. She was a national magazine award finalist, a TED resident, an Aspen Ideas Festival fellow, and a grantee of the International Women’s Media Foundation. She produced the award-winning Vice News documentary “Misconception,” and gave a TED talk called “What to Expect Post-Expecting.”  Dr. Kate and Allison talk about how modern medicine should make pregnancy and childbirth safer for all. But in Allison’s book Birth Control, she reveals how women are controlled, traumatized, injured, and even killed because of the traditionalist practices of medical professionals and hospitals. They talk about the dangerous misogyny that permeates pregnancy, birth, and early motherhood in our hospitals. Kate and Allison also talk about how doctors were trained by midwives and then stole control of birth from them in the 19th century. Allison touches on specific birthing practices that are steamrolling women by a male-dominated medical establishment that has everyone convinced that birthing bodies are inherently flawed and that every pregnancy is a crisis that it alone can “solve.” Misogyny and racism, not scientific evidence and support, shape the overwhelming majority of America’s four million annual births. Drawing on extensive reporting, expert interviews, an original survey of 1,300 mothers, and her own personal experiences, Yarrow documents in her book how modern maternal health care is insidiously, purposefully designed to take power from women to the detriment of their physical and mental health—not just during labor, but for years after. She shares this in her conversation with Dr. Kate and discusses better ways this can be handled They also talk about a new post-partum depression drug and so much more. 02 Jan 2024The Chronically UnderTouched & the Effects on the Global Majority with Aaron Johnson00:44:35
Dr. Kate and Aaron talk about how men benefit from Platonic Touch with other men including physical touch as well as energetic presence, song, movement, nature connection, and deep listening. Aaron is committed to interrupting the Chronically UnderTouched trauma story and be a part of the collective healing of closeness. It’s a movement supporting People of the Global Majority — people of color — to access healthy, nourishing, platonic touch in a culture that, in the United States, denies it at every turn. Tender touch means seeing people as full human beings. It is the antidote to the invention of The Black Brute archetype. Aaron Johnson is a teacher of closeness, a consultant and activist. He has made a lifelong commitment to end racism. He uses intimacy and closeness as a primary means to that end. 26 Dec 2023Sexuality and Shame in Asian American culture with Christene Lozano00:44:56
Dr. Kate talks with Christene about Asian Americans and their cultural and mental attitudes towards relationships and sex as seen first hand by Christene growing up in this culture.  She says there is almost always a sense of shame or guilt whether talking about sex, having sex, seeking therapy, dating before marriage, etc. and the weight of that shame can be seen as a betrayal to the culture historically and present day, as well as to the family. This overall taboo causes multiple problems for the individual as they try to balance what they want in life versus what they think they should do for the family.   Christene works as a BIPOC AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, IITAP Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, and Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Christene specializes in the treatment of sex-related issues and compulsive sexual behavior.     Email your questions to: question@getnakedpodcast.com Stay Connected with Dr. Kate: IG: https://www.instagram.com/themodernintimacy/ https://www.instagram.com/drkatebalestrieri/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/drkatebalestrieri/ https://www.tiktok.com/modernintimacy/ Learn more about your ad choices. Artimus Wolz is a film school grad and Digital creator. He is an artist and a musician and created tik tok videos that have received wide spread attention. His Tik Tok followers are over 670,000 and his likes have reached 13 million. Artimus’ hit, Incompedance was his comedic but insightful video pointing out the male tendency of Incompetence in the avoidance and manipulation of feigned incompetence of daily chores and beyond. This is the basis of the discussion between Artimus and Dr. Kate: The phenomenon of Weaponized Incompetence and how good men are at it.  Wolz picks up on social ilks and is honest and vulnerable in his videos. In the podcast, he speaks of a tense relationship with his father and his video Eggshells talks about that and going home for the holidays. Raw but comedic, insightful and entertaining, his lyrics hit home on many subjects as does the conversation between Dr. Kate and Artimus. In this podcast we learn more about who Artimus is, how he takes real vulnerabilities, anger and comedy and mix It up in a number of great videos. 22 Nov 2022Bodily Autonomy, Sex and Relationships with guest Dr. Theresa Gallagher, Psy.D00:33:08
Dr. Theresa Gallagher, Psy.D is a Licensed Psychologist in NY. She earned her Psy.D at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona, and received training in trauma-informed therapeutic techniques, Forensic Psychology, and psychological assessment. She believes in empowering individuals to find strength within themselves. Dr. Gallagher helps clients break free from cycles of the past and move into the future with confidence and self-efficacy. Dr. Gallagher is a Clinical Associate on the Modern Intimacy team.In this episode, Dr. Kate and Dr. Gallagher talk about Bodily Autonomy as it relates to sexuality and gender.  This subject matter is particularly relevant on the heels of Roe v. Wade being overturned and other misogynistic policies enacted globally that infringe on a uterus owners' right to their body.Bodily autonomy means, "My body is for me; my body is my own." It’s about power, and it’s about agency. It’s about choice, and it’s about dignity. This episode of Modern Intimacy talks about a shift in uterus owners knowing Roe v. Wade is overturned and options of putting into effect one's own choices are limited now. Women are feeling unheard, disconnected, anxious, and alone. There is also a question of if they feel supported by their partner. As therapists, the Doctors have been hearing fallout from Roe v Wade, such as how the uterus owner’s partner may never understand how helpless they feel.  They may also be looking for empathy for the feeling of having sex being risky now. It has impacted and hindered feeling sexually curious, available and how their partner understands this downshift. There are so many side effects of this decision on women and ultimately it affects their partners as well. We hope this shines a light on these new results from a “no choice” decision. And can help define what you may be experiencing but haven’t been able to define where it’s coming from. All of this is discussed in this important episode of Modern Intimacy. 29 Nov 2022Erotic Foreplay for a Good Fvck with Raquel VanLoon, LPC, CADC, CSAT-Candidate00:48:43
Dr. Kate talks with Raquel VanLoon, LPC, CADC,  a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist - Candidate. Raquel is a Clinical Associate at Modern Intimacy, and earned her Masters degree in counseling psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology with a specialization in treating addiction. Raquel works with clients feeling overwhelmed with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, stress management, life transitions, trauma, substance use/abuse, building coping skills, body image, and lifestyle balance, to name a few. Raquel meets clients where they are and supports them through getting where they want to be. Foreplay is necessary for a good f*ck. So many of us know how important foreplay is but yet it doesn’t get a lot of attention.   Without adequate foreplay, partners can have feelings of disappointment, feel less than, confused, disconnected if sex did not live up to their expectations. Often, partners carry misinterpretations from porn that sex does not require foreplay, clitoral stimulation or consists of quick penetration, and still have the expectation for ecstatic orgasms. When this doesn’t happen in our reality, partners often feel deflated.   Foreplay is that important. Some therapists say just 15 minutes of foreplay can increase chances of orgasm.   Dr. Kate and Raquel talk about specifics to up the exploration of one another’s body parts and bring awareness of foreplay to both partners. Do you know that foreplay can occur in and out of the bedroom? It can start with a text, a hand on your back, helping with a chore, and then hopefully elongate the pleasure of foreplay.   Listen to this conversation and get excited about exploring the importance and fun of foreplay.   Website: www.modernintimacy.com IG: @drkatebalestrieri and @themodernintimacyTikTok: @drkatebalestrieri and @modernintimacy Learn more about your ad choices. 06 Dec 20226 Stages of Grooming Adults with guest Barrett Pall00:53:37
Grooming is the process during which a child sexual offender draws a child in by gaining his or her trust in order to sexually abuse the child and maintain secrecy. The offender may also groom the parents by persuading them of his or her trustworthiness with children. In this episode, Dr. Kate talks with Barret Pall a former model, now a life coach, who has decided to talk about his experiences of being sexually abused, and show that this happens to people of all genders.  Dr. Kate shines a light on the process of grooming so people can be aware of the steps predators take once designating a victim and the psychological make up of those predators, as well as the psychological effects on the victim, especially when this happens at a young age.  Former model Barrett Pall began his fashion career while studying as an undergraduate at New York University. Pall, now 33, is opening up about the alleged sexual abuse he received from photographers behind the scenes. Pall, as many do, thought the fashion industry would be glamorous. But quickly found out that isn’t what it is. On his very first photo shoot, he was sexually assaulted by the photographer. And on a trip to Los Angeles, he was in an uncomfortable situation with his “agent.” He says there is no one specific way that someone is sexually assaulted or abused,” “I personally was not penetrated in any way, but I was sexually abused, and I say that wholeheartedly, knowing full stop that is what happened to me. There was no consenting, there was no asking, there was no ‘Are you OK with this?’” Men also suffer from unwanted sexual advances, with 1 in 6 males reporting to have been sexually abused or assaulted.  “There is something that’s taken from you, and as more people share their stories that are similar to mine, you get to take back a part of your narrative, which is taking back some of your power,” he told Yahoo. The message he wants to send out to other men, regardless of your sexuality, is that consent is something that we also get to have for us and our sex lives. It’s an enthusiastic ‘yes’ — or it’s not a ‘yes’ at all.” Healing can take a lifetime, and for Pall, that journey includes helping others to heal. For the last eight years, he’s been working as a life coach focused on helping his clients unlock their potential. 13 Dec 2022Pleasure After Purity Culture with Rachel Overvoll, Somatic Sex Coach00:46:49
Rachel Overvoll is a Somatic Sex and Intimacy Coach and published author of Finding Feminism. Using her credentials from the Somatica Institute and Kinsey Institute, she works through the mediums of embodiment and self-attunement to help clients step into the power of an authentic and pleasure-centered life. The term “purity culture” is generally associated with the white, American, Evangelical Christian Purity Movement. However, evangelicals don’t have a monopoly on the ethics of purity culture. The specifics vary by religion and culture, but gender and sexual control upon which purity culture stands is global, cross-religious, and cross-cultural.  Rachel and Dr. Kate talk about the Purity Culture that conflates women’s worth with their virginity.Couples don’t even hold hands til engaged. Any distractions to man’s path to God are a sin.But actually, men keep control over women’s bodies in the form of sexual oppression. Some see it as positive…but in the Purity Culture, it is embedded so deeply and really is oppression. Rachel talks about how Purity culture instills in women a deep hatred of their bodies and mistrust of their bodies because they are taught it causes evil.Women in this culture cannot enjoy their bodies as it causes themselves and men to sin.The process of women trying to leave the Purity culture is also part of the conversation: Regaining love of your body, and knowing you deserve pleasure.Dr. Kate and Rachel talk about:1. what purity culture is and some of the lessons it teaches children growing up in it 2. How did Rachel begin to unpack purity culture messaging? 3.   How does purity culture impact how someone shows up for themselves? For a partner? 4.  How can someone recovering from purity culture begin to explore what is pleasurable for them? 5. How can someone deal with the shame that's rooted in purity culture as they begin their exploration of pleasure? And so much more. Joel is a grammy-nominated songwriter, certified meditation teacher, life coach, and creator of the R.I.S.E. Journal.  R.I.S.E. stands for Release, Inquire, Self-Awareness, Empower. This practice reconnects practitioners to their truth by infusing meditation, asking “heart questions,” and deep listening into a modality that Joel calls meditative journaling. Joel has committed his life to be a conduit for grounding, healing, and transformation. He uses music, poetry, and meditation, to create a safe space to feel, heal, and grow in self-awareness.  Joel Cross grew up in Cleburne, Texas singing gospel songs with his seven siblings. At the age of twelve, he fell in love with the guitar. He was self-taught, finding inspiration in gospel, soul, classical, and r&b.  In 2003, he began to study jazz at the University of Houston. There, he learned the traditions of improvisation and bebop. His influences were Grant Green, George Benson, Wes Montgomery, and Joe Pass. In 2006, he transferred to the University of North Texas in Denton where he finished his performance degree in Jazz Studies. Though his formal education was focused on guitar, Joel was always inspired by creating new music and telling stories that brought the listener in. His heartfelt approach showcased his ability to make each piece his own.  One afternoon, while playing a show in Dallas, Joel decided to appease the crowd’s unconventional request for a song by Taylor Swift. A fan happened to catch his very soulful rendition of “Shake it Off” on video and uploaded it to YouTube. By the next morning, it had over half a million views and Joel’s face was on every major news source in Dallas. The viral video quickly catapulted his career as he captured the attention of fans across the globe, including Ellen DeGeneres, America’s Got Talent, Capitol Records, Time, and MTV. Four-time Grammy award-winning artist, India Arie, was also intrigued by Joel when she heard one of his original songs, “Candlelight,” and invited him to collaborate with her. In 2017 that album, Songversation: Medicine was nominated for a Grammy, Best New Age Album. Joel collaborated with India in 2019 for her album Worthy, co-writing and playing guitar on several songs.  Website: www.modernintimacy.com Dr. Kate Balestrieri  Modern Intimacy Joel Cross Socials:Instagram TikTok YouTube  Insight Timer  Web: asoulcalledjoel.com Learn more about your ad choices. 28 Feb 2023The Madonna Whore Complex with Brooke Brownlee00:51:06
Brooke Brownlee, APCC is an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor at Modern Intimacy under the supervision of Dr. Kate Balestrieri. Brooke is passionate about helping clients heal from trauma, feel more empowered sexually, and repair relationships. Brooke is continuing her education and working towards becoming a Certified Sex Therapist. “Where such men love, they have no desire, and where they desire, they cannot love.” This quote directly from Sigmund Freud describes a phenomenon he called the Madonna Whore Complex.  The Madonna Whore Complex is deeply rooted in misogynic beliefs and is damaging to women on both an individual and societal level. The Madonna Whore Complex (MWC) is a psychological complex often perpetuated by heterosexual, cisgender males which places women into two categories the “Madonna, “ a woman who is pure, virtuous, and nurturing, or a “Whore,” a woman who is deemed as overly sexual, manipulating, and promiscuous. The dichotomy of MWC creates a rigidity that limits women’s sexual expression, agency, and freedom by defining their sexuality into one of two categories. Dr. Kate and Brooke discuss the origin and effects of the Madonna Whore Complex in this podcast: the effects on women and men. Brooke wrote a blog on the Madonna Whore Complex that can be found on the Modern Intimacy website. https://www.modernintimacy.com/the-psychology-of-the-madonna-whore-complex/ Website: www.modernintimacy.com  Dr. Kate Balestrieri  Modern Intimacy Learn more about your ad choices. 07 Mar 2023Is Objectification Linked to Existential Fears? with Dr. Jamie Goldenberg and Roxanne Felig00:46:36
Dr. Jamie Goldenberg works at the University of South Florida and has been involved in the study of Terror Management Theory and Objectification of oneself and others, the body and sex, objectification of women. Roxanne Felig has been a part of the same research study. Dr. Goldenberg's research focuses on psychological experiences associated with being a woman. To this end, she has conducted extensive research examining the causes and consequences of objectification of women. One approach to these questions is to apply terror management theory, a theory that takes an existential perspective on human motivation. Her research suggests that people are motivated to deny mortality and any connection to animality (or creatureliness) – objectification of woman accomplishes this by turning women into literal (and immortal) objects. The focus on women’s appearance and consequent denial of personhood and internal attributes affects perceptions of women and can hinder their success, having implications for political progress for instance, and also affects women’s self-perceptions, undermining self-concept clarity and congruences between the self and bodily experiences (e.g., explaining why women sometimes dress as if they are imperious to the cold). They have also applied the terror management perspective to health outcomes, developing the terror management health model; this line of research led to 10 years of continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health. Recently, she and her graduate students have been interested in the consequences of social media on women’s health and well-being.Dr. Kate discusses with her guests  Objectification : the Disconnect from one’s body, the pyscho dynamic denial of the body’s natural abilities including feeling pain or pleasure. And so much more on the findings of this study and the phenomenon of Objectification, fear of death, and connection of it all.Website: www.modernintimacy.com  Dr. Kate Balestrieri  Modern Intimacy Learn more about your ad choices. It is a (shaming and misogynistic) term used to describe women who are entrenched in their own internalized misogyny, and aim to please men, at the expense of other women. Dr. Kate and Kayla discuss women being conditioned to maintain gender roles and make choices to be more liked by men.  They want to be “picked” by men. Some of this is very subconscious behavior. 26 Sep 2023Different Cultures: How Partners Maneuver to Create a New Way with Gaby Balsells, Relationship and Intimacy Coach00:46:39
Gaby Balsells is a Clinical Psychologist, Liscensed in Guatemala, and a Relationship and Intimacy Coach with almost a decade of experience guiding couples to understand each other and become a true team! Within her extensive resume, Gaby is specialized in Attachment Science & Emotionally Focused Therapy. Gaby believes that eroticism is a life force, and she is passionate about helping people find deeper connection to their bodies as a way of reconnecting to their whole Self. She helps couples become fulfilled with their intimacy through creating a sex-positive space that fosters curiosity and deeper connection. Gaby and Dr. Kate talk about the benefits of blending a couple’s 2 different cultures and backgrounds and all it can affect. Gaby’s parents were from two different cultures and both held on to their individual cultures for the family rather than blending it. This can cause some tension and confusion. Gaby and Dr. Kate talk about the 2 cultures’ need to come together and create their own new way- take the best and surrender what doesn’t work. The coming together of two different cultures effects so many things from religion, to language, to views of how to raise kids, traditions, in-laws, freedom of choice for the children, how to talk about emotions, how to express anger, being a woman, and much more. Gaby finds that it is best if it is not an “either /or” situation, but rather a blending that takes place. The blending can honor traditions of each partner and create a new design that both agree upon. They talk about steps bi cultural couples can take for better communication: Creating traditions by their own design Define roles and responsibilities Determine if the relationship takes precedent over work and family How much compromise is needed and couple defined boundaries from the in laws How much alone time each needs. It’s a deep look and practical guide to issues large and small that may affect this particular relationship and families of this coupling. Some of the key points include: - Resilience can be misconstrued and work against us when there is a lack of social care and value for care in society. - The concept of resilience has become detached from science and has proliferated as an ideology. - The science of resilience has biases and limitations, particularly in relation to gender and vulnerable populations. - Healing and resilience are not solely individual endeavors, but require community, relationships, and reflection. - Traditional notions of masculinity can hinder resilience and adaptability to change. - The idea of bouncing back to a pre-trauma state is a myth, and healing involves assimilating experiences and evolving as individuals. Rigid notions of masculinity can be harmful and lead to a lack of resilience. - Marginalized communities may overcompensate in one area to compensate for marginalization in another. - Cultivating an embodied awareness of our environments is important for resilience. - Resilience should be viewed from a relational perspective, emphasizing interconnectedness. -- Soraya Chemaly is a renowned journalist, activist, and author.
