10 May 2022EP:91 | Get Ducks With Ramsey Russell01:36:55

This week we have outfitter and waterfowl enthusiast Ramsey Russell from GetDucks.com. Ramsey is arguably the worlds most traveled and accomplished waterfowler, so we sat him down in the studio to hear some very interesting stories from his travels, but also hit on a few theories about the seemingly recent changes in the North American duck migration patterns. It quickly becomes obvious he’s in this game much more for the journey than the hunt. We also deviate from the ducks for a moment to hear his story about pursuing the western capercaille in Russia – a huge species of grouse that hunts very much like a turkey. 05 Jul 2022EP:100 | Insight into Oak Masting and More with Dr. Marcus Lashley01:31:57

This week on the Gamekeepers podcast we welcome one of our favorite guests, Dr. Marcus Lashley (@DrDisturbance), from the University of Florida. We begin by discussing summer scouting for desirable plant species, while many are blooming and easier to identify PLUS how to gauge them as indicator species. We also give a tip on an app or two that can help a Gamekeeper ID them. The presence of these plants or lack thereof can be important information to a Gamekeeper. Marcus also explains a recent study on “oak masting,” and how this information can help improve your hunting. It’s commonly thought that many trees of the same species synchronize and drop their mast/acorns at the same time, but the study shows some interesting insights.  It’s the 100th episode, but the guys don’t reminisce much and get right to the subject matter. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!

The change in the physiology of bucks from summer to fall, the change in the native forage and planted plots from summer to fall, and the change in antlers from velvet to hard-horned. We also discuss the importance of the mighty acorn to wildlife. Did you know that bucks will eat the velvet off their own and another bucks antlers? That surprised us. It’s an interesting one as we ask a lot of questions. You won’t want to miss this one. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!

11 Oct 2022EP:114 | The Do’s and Don’ts of Feeding Whitetails Explained01:17:57

This week we discuss a topic that can be polarizing. No doubt feeding and the use of feeders is rampant across the whitetails range. Where legal, feeders can help a Gamekeeper’s efforts to attract and hold wildlife on a property, BUT IT HAS TO BE DONE in a way that minimalizes potential problems. There are right and wrong ways. In an effort to learn, we have Dan Moultrie discuss what he believes works, and he gives tips that Gamekeepers can utilize. Ronnie “Cuz” Strickland also joins us to help ask the best questions. It’s an interesting discussion. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!

18 Oct 2022EP:115 | Gamekeeping with Gerald Swindle01:28:27

This week we have a lot of fun with our guest Gerald Swindle. He’s a well celebrated professional bass fisherman, but is also a rabid Gamekeeper who intensively manages properties in multiple states. We discussed improving the hunting, habitat and value of his properties in between his funny comments. You just have to hear his story about qualifying for The Bassmaster Classic with an upset stomach. If you don’t laugh, something is wrong with you. Juxtaposed against his funny stories, Gerald also may have made the most poignant comment said so far on the Gamekeepers podcast. It had to do with wearing camo and it really hit home. 25 Oct 2022EP:116 | Why a Gamekeeper Needs a Suppressor01:06:55

This week we have an interesting discussion about how suppressors can help Gamekeepers manage their properties. We have always preached how important it is to reduce pressure and noise pollution and suppressors can really help a Gamekeeper do that. Especially when having to harvest a high number of does to meet management objectives. The guys from Nosler and our own local expert explain the whole process to us from how to purchase, the geometry of sizes, how suppressors work, what ammo works best for hunting, subsonic ammo and can they help save your hearing.  Do you have a lot of does to shoot? Have a small place and worry about pressure? Just like the idea of being quieter?  This informative podcast is for you. Listen , Learn and Enjoy.

This week, we take a deep dive into where and how brassicas (including radishes) and certain clovers have been developed. Long time New Zealand seedsman, Stephen Bennett, of the 100 plus year old seed company, PGG Wrightson Nutrition, explains the whole story. The science PGG Wrightson has put behind these plants is nothing short of impressive, and there are many questions answered. Not a hard sell, just an honest and well versed guy explaining how and why certain cultivars perform better.  If you are into food plots, you don’t want to miss this one. 22 Nov 2022EP:120 | Hunting Accidents Can Happen01:36:00

This week we have three uniformed Mississippi game wardens in the studio, reminding us to be safe this hunting season with stories of other hunters who weren’t. After years of repetition it’s easy to become complacent, get in a rut and take for granted the things we need to do to stay safe in tree stands and around firearms.  This podcast is a shocking reminder to wear your safety belt, unload your weapon before you cross a fence, let someone know where you’re going, wear a life jacket in the duck boat, and much more. It’s one you will want to share with younger and new hunters and a great refresher for the seasoned. Listen, Learn and Stay Safe.

06 Dec 2022EP:122 | We Apologize to the Squirrel01:25:01

This week we humbly apologize to the squirrel. Across the whitetail’s range, our collective love of deer and deer hunting has made many of us forget about what once was a very strong hunting tradition. We don’t want to spook our deer, so we’ve backed away from roaming the woods in pursuit of bushy tails. Squirrels are a challenging target, live in beautiful hardwood habitats and can be fantastic table fare. On this podcast, super squirrel hunter George Brown helps remind us what we have been missing.  Warning: whether you’re a seasoned hunter, or are just getting into the sport – this one will make you want to break day leaning against an old oak tree with a .22 rifle by your side. Be sure and check out the outstanding squirrel and dumplings recipe in the show notes.  Listen, Learn and Enjoy!

Where do I look for artifacts, and what is ethical and/or legal means of doing so, and how do I properly document them? What do I do if I find a “site” or “mound” on my property? We also shared a couple of stories about the dark side of artifact collecting. 20 Jan 2023EP:133 | A Duck Hunter's Nightmare (Bonus Episode)00:35:00

This week we get serious and hear a duck hunting story that came awfully close to having a bad ending. Like many of us want to do, Jason Cook found himself duck hunting during a major freeze up. When his dog fell through the ice on a long retrieve and couldn’t get out…like all of us would, he started to his dog in attempt to save him. It's a perilous situation and when Jason falls through the ice himself and can’t touch bottom, it gets even worse. We recorded this podcast hoping to remind duck hunters how dangerous things can get and what to do in case you find yourself in a bad situation.

This is one you might want to share with a friend.

We learn they are a fascinating animal, very much deserving of our respect even though we still seem to want to trap or shoot each one we see. They weren’t always in the Eastern half of the U.S., yet have you ever wondered how they got here? Why do they howl? Just how smart are they? If you trap one how long does it take another to fill the void? How large are their territories?  Her vast amount of research into their habits and habitat allow her to provide us some serious insight. We learn it all and more. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!

You’ll hear a priceless Mr. Fox story from a rainy morning hunt, plus legendary turkey hunter/caller Ernie Callendrelli joins us and has us all laughing hysterically.  We don’t take ourselves too seriously and this one proves it. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!

28 Apr 2023EP:153 | The Story of Avery Island, Tabasco and Wildlife Conservation.01:32:29

This week Dr. Shane Bernard tells us the history of Avery Island in Louisiana, including fascinating stories about the conservation efforts of E. A. “Ned” McIlhenny (1872-1949), the son of TABASCO® Sauce inventor E. McIlhenny. As the story goes, this man single handedly saved the imperiled Snowy Egret by creating protected sanctuary on the island that by 1911, had a thriving population over 100,000 birds.  E. A. also banded over 300,000 birds and waterfowl to learn their migration habits, along with authoring a book with Charles Jordan about wild turkeys. The 2200 acre island also is home to a subspecies of whitetail deer thought to only live on the island. Shane, an accomplished author himself, is the historian and curator for the McIlhenny family and the TABASCO brand, who shares some great stories with us. You’ll be surprised. Listen, Learn, Enjoy!

21 Jul 2023EP:172 | The Oyster is a Gamekeeper (Bonus Episode)01:08:26

On this week’s bonus episode of the Gamekeeper Podcast, we re-hash a visit to the gulf coast near Corpus Christi, TX, where we helped document a team of researchers and volunteers as they successfully re-established new oyster reefs with recycled oyster shells. Dr. Jennifer Pollack, from the Texas A&M Harte Research Institute (HRI) in “Corpus,” and Pat Murray, the President of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) joined in on the discussion. We also learn about the program being put on by HRI called Sink Your Shucks... "It's habitat forming." We learned there are many similarities between improving habitat on land and along our shorelines, and how easy it is to make a difference.

There's more to come on this story! In November of this year, "The Oyster Project,"  produced by AFTCO and Mossy Oak will drop. We are looking forward to sharing this with you and helping spread the word about the good work that CCA and Texas A&M Corpus Christi is doing to improve the habitat of coastal waterways.
