On the television front, Isha most recently starred in debut roles for season two of “Run The World” on STARZ and opposite Colman Dolmingo in the eighth and final season of AMC’s “Fear The Walking Dead.”  Isha is also well-known for his role in the 12th film in Tyler Perry’s iconic Madea franchise, “A Madea Homecoming.” Before Isha landed his breakout role in a feature Netflix film, he honed his craft with a handful of recurring appearances in television, appearing on the Emmy-nominated HBO Max series, “The Flight Attendant,” opposite Kaley Cuoco, as well as Violet Hour Media’s horror-thriller series, “Red Riding Hoods,” and a SBS6 action series, “DNA” in the Netherlands.

22 Aug 2022#177: Brittany Schmitt - Gratitude01:19:53

Brittany Schmitt is a comedian, writer and podcaster. She currently has a new comedy special from Ho to Housewife where (her words) she quite literally went From Ho to Housewife. She crafted a comedy special that tackles her experience of sex, drugs and basketball, plus a lot more. It’s very funny.

Here’s a little snippet from her life story which blew me away. Brittany fu*ked up and got a DUI. Super depressed, mortified, broke and with her back up against a wall, a friend suggested that she try stand-up because it was ‘cheaper than therapy’ and she could laugh at herself. The first time she stepped on stage, she knew that’s what she was born to do. The road hasn’t been easy, nor has it been exactly linear. So, she made up her mind to get sober, get her sh*t together and get serious about comedy.

Most recently, Brittany appeared on Comedy Central’s Stand-Up Featuring her debut comedy special, of course, titled From Ho to Housewife which premiered on 800 Pound Gorilla’s YouTube channel. Links are in the episode notes below if you’d like to listen to it.

So, as you can imagine, we dive deep and cover a lot, such as meeting Usher, going to jail, drugs, alcohol and getting sober, her new comedy special, her holistic forward moving mindset, gratitude, intuition and happiness.

29 Jul 2024#256: Caitlin Cook - Do what scares you01:27:52

Caitlin Cook wears many hats, she is a comedian, singer-songwriter, artist, writer, director, producer and designer. She began writing songs at age four, she’s not your conventional stand-up, Caitlin combines witty one-liners and scintillating storytelling with hilariously irreverent musical comedy and projected visuals. She has taken the stage all across the US, Canada, Europe, and Oceania at top-tier venues (like the Meltdown in Los Angeles, Union Hall in Brooklyn, and the Bill Murray in London), comedy clubs (like Comedy on State in Madison, the Comedy MIX in Vancouver, and Dead Crow Comedy in Wilmington), festivals (like the New York Comedy Festival, Skankfest, and High Mud), theatres (like Theatre 99 in Charleston, the Bug Theatre in Denver, and the Throckmorton in Mill Valley), dimly lit bar basements, strangers’ living rooms, and even a houseboat once.

She has two other successful musical comedy albums: Zinger-Songwriter, which she recorded at 12 different venues while on tour across the US and UK, and Betty Pitch, which she recorded after writing 250 songs a day during the pandemic. A fierce champion of mixed media and genre-bending works of art, Caitlin has carved out a space for herself smack-dab in the centre of the Venn diagram between comedy, music, and theatre.

She has a number of shows out now called The Writing on the Stall and it sounds brilliant! Links below.

Caitlin Cook became obsessed with bathroom graffiti a decade ago while she was studying art history (of course) and getting frustrated at the pretentious exclusivity of the art world.

Fascinated by this perspective, Caitlin set about creating her own art from the bon mots, wise cracks, witticisms, bizarre ponderings, and silly doodles that make up bathroom stalls across the world.

This led to the creation of The Writing on the Stall, which sold out its 2023 Off-Broadway debut and was a New York Times Critic’s Pick; the accompanying studio album has over 25M+ streams.

We chat about leaving ones comfort zone, doing what scares you mentality, stage fright, sound healing, songwriting, not fitting in the ‘traditional comedy box’, her brand new shows in Edinburgh, graffiti and unique take on musical comedy plus plenty more!

17 Feb 2025#274: Charlene Kaye - Being Cool01:04:20

Charlene Kaye is a singer- song writer, musician, comedian and actor who releases music under the moniker KAYE. She has carved out a unique path in the entertainment industry, beginning with her time performing with TEAM STARKID, the viral internet sensation founded by her University of Michigan classmate, Emmy award-winning actor Darren Criss. Since then, she has released multiple albums and opened for Arctic Monkeys, alt-J, St. Vincent, and Metallica. Rolling Stone Magazine gave Kaye’s 2019 single “Closer Than This” 5/5 stars and hailed her as “a fully realized pop goddess.”

Charlene’s short-form comedy on Instagram Reels and TikTok is a phenomenon in and of itself. This spring, she skyrocketed to viral fame with “Every Taylor Swift Song,” a genius musical breakdown with 16 million views on Instagram, which incited BBC 1 to interview her on UK national radio. She has since followed it up with “Every Dua Lipa Song,” “Every Charli XCX song,” and “Every Chappell Roan Song,” which Chappell herself commented, “EXACTLYYYY YOU GET IT” with copious heart emojis.

Charlene’s recent expansion into acting and comedy has attracted a larger following. She made a cameo as herself at Kendall Roy’s birthday party on HBO's hit series "Succession" and played synthesizers for Coldplay on Saturday Night Live while dressed as an alien. Her upcoming role as punk rocker Jade Power in the movie RON opposite comedy legend Margaret Cho further solidifies her ascent in the acting world.

Also exciting news, Charlene will be in Melbourne for the comedy festival with her show ‘Tiger Daughter, Or: How I Brought My Immigrant Mother Ultimate Shame’, so if you’re around check them out (links below)!

We chat about transitioning to comedy, performing and love of guitar, her upcoming Melbourne shows, trolls, viral videos, courage, the magical formula to Taylor Swifts songs, her new lease on life,  listening to your gut, the reason guitar sales increase, solo vs being in a band + plenty more!

10 Mar 2025#278: Chris Parker - Creating Together01:34:56

Chris Parker is an award winning comedian, actor, writer, show-runner and podcaster.

This past year Chris hosted the New Zealand Comedy Festival Gala, and toured his latest show, Give Me One Good Reason Why I Shouldn’t Throw My Phone Off This Bridge, to full houses throughout Australia and New Zealand. He also made his prime-time Australian TV debut on Thank God You’re Here (where he won the episode) and released the highly anticipated second season of Double Parked. Chris Parker is most commonly known for his funny Instagram and TikTok videos which built him a huge social media audience over the last few years. His legendary win on the hit New Zealand TV show Celebrity Treasure Island made history!

His 2018 New Zealand International Comedy Festival show Camp Binch, was awarded the prestigious Fred Award for Best Show in the Festival and went on to play to 5-star reviews and sell-out crowds at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Fun fact, the felt hat he made during the 2020 nationwide lockdown was acquired by and is on display at The Auckland Museum and Te Papa the National Museum of New Zealand. Kinda dramatic – don’t you agree? Chris is a theatre graduate from the renowned drama school Toi Whakaari O Aotearoa and he has appeared in and written multiple theatre shows across New Zealand, most notably Hudson and Halls Live! Where Chris played one-half of the famous gay cooking duo, David Halls and won best actor at the 2017 Wellington Theatre Awards.

Chris has appeared in feature films such as Baby Done, The Breaker Upperers and Nude Tuesday and has two feature films of his own currently in development. As a comedian and writer Chris is a regular face on New Zealand television appearing on 7 Days, Have You Been Paying Attention NZ, Jono and Ben, Funny Girls, Season 3 of Taskmaster New Zealand and the sitcom Golden Boy. Chris also co-hosts the podcast The Male Gays with fellow comedian Eli Matthewson, which has an upcoming digital video series in production. Chris was listed as The Herald’s top 5 Entertainment Heroes of 2020 and in 2021, was nominated for Television Personality of the Year. In 2022, Chris was the recipient of the inaugural Topp Prize awarded by the New Zealand Comedy Trust for Aotearoa’s most generous and gifted comedian. That same year released the comedy/documentary special Chris Parker: Back To School, about all boy schools in Christchurch. Chris embarked on an Australian and New Zealand national tour of his show Gentle Man to sold-out crowds and 5-star reviews and his debut novel Here for a Good Time was released through Allen & Unwin.

In 2023, Chris toured his new show, Lots of Love, Chris Parker, to sold-out audiences in Australia and New Zealand. Chris’s new comedy series, Double Parked, premiered in June and was created and written with Alice Snedden.

He was the show runner and writer for the narrative comedy series Double Parked and is currently touring his live stand up (Stop Being So Dramatic) shows across New Zealand and Australia.

Stop Being So Dramatic are four words the self-proclaimed People’s Princess of Aotearoa Chris Parker has heard his whole life. Now those words also happen to be the name of his show touring Australia and New Zealand in 2025. At the culturally relevant age of 34, Chris is ready to address the drama queen allegations head-on. Stop Being So Dramatic promises to be an hour of high-intensity, feverishly paced and dizzyingly expressive comedy, it’s a one-man variety spectacle, chill, stand-up hour of laughs. That doesn’t sound dramatic at all – does it? Chris admits, there is some merit to the accusations, such as crying in every speech he’s ever delivered publicly, and there may have been a situation this year where he slept on his neck weirdly resulting in a neck brace. Still, Chris is sure he’s just a chilled guy, down to Earth and he’s ready to prove it to you in Stop Being So Dramatic.

We chat about his evolving voice, performing on a broken foot (multiple times), being an improv king and his 10 hour improv day, being the felting guy, his upcoming tour, being a show runner and leadership, thriving on celebrity treasure island plus plenty more!

25 Apr 2022#160: Beth Lapides - Your Story01:38:49

Beth Lapides is a comedian, writer, producer and the Host of UnCabaret.

UnCabaret is a legendary alternative comedy show which has helped define the genre over 25 years ago. In short, it’s a progressive storytelling show where comedians tell true stories they've never told on stage before. (No rehearsed bits, no derogatory jokes.), a real game changer in the industry.

For more than 25 years, UnCabaret has been the un-homophobic, un-xenophobic, un-misogynistic and un-hacky place for comedy luminaries to tell stories ripped from the headlines of their lives. UnCabaret has been adapted into an Amazon Prime series, a Comedy Central special, and five critically acclaimed albums. Its notable guest list includes Bob Odenkirk, Patton Oswalt, Margaret Cho, Sandra Bernhard, Kathy Griffin, Maria Bamford, Julia Sweeney, Tig Notaro, Jon Stewart, Jennifer Coolidge, Sarah Silverman, Natasha Leggero, Sam Jay, Ali Wong and countless more.

Her new book So You Need to Decide, features conversations with comedians, writers and cultural icons about making decisions in family, work, love, moving, and spirituality. It's part memoir, part interviews and I recommend you grab a copy.

Beth is all about authenticity and self-reflection, as reflected in both the audiobook and UnCabaret. She loves to explore the stories behind our stories.

This is only a small snapshot of what she has achieved and as you can imagine we dive deep and cover a lot, such as applying for first lady, UNCABARET, regrets, her new book, living your REAL life, yoga, Bob Odenkirk, wounds, pilots that don’t get made, addictions and drinking, shame, signs and symbols.
