09 Jun 2022How To Conduct Customer Research (And Set Up The Foundation For The Future Success)00:59:38

Do you know your customers? Like really really know them? Most businesses say they do, but the truth is they only THINK they do.

The difference between THINKING you know your customers and actually KNOWING your customers can be the difference between a thriving business and one that just gets by.

Think about it this way – if you really know your customers, you would be able to anticipate their needs and wants. You’d know what they like and don’t like. You’d know what makes them tick and what turns them off. You’d be able to give them what they want, when they want it, and how they want it. And you’d be able to market to them in a way that resonates.

But most businesses don’t operate this way.

They think they know their customers, but they really don’t.

And that’s a problem.

So how to actually get to know your customers?

Well, in today's episode of the Funky Marketing Show, we'll be discussing just that.

We are joined by Ryan Paul Gibson, the Founder of Content lift, a B2B marketing company that helps businesses research and understand their customers better.

Ryan is in marketing for over 20 years and the reason why he even got into the marketing industry was that he was really curious about how and why customers buy.

Now, he's on a mission to help businesses understand their customers better so they can create content, products, and services that their customers actually want and need.

And, in this episode, he's going to show us exactly how to do that.

Overview of what we talked about:

0:00 - Intro

3:12 - Ryan Paul's background story

9:52 - The importance of understanding your customers and how they think

15 Sep 2021Rory Sutherland: Biases in B2B decision-making00:53:44

There are far far more biases in collective and institutionalized decision-making than in consumer decision-making.

Companies pretend that the process is hugely rational when in reality it really isn’t.

That's why we've invited a guest. And what a guest that was!

Rory Sutherland dropped by and we recorded a great episode for the Funky Marketing Show on the topic of Behavior sciences in B2B

In case you've been living under the rock and you have no idea who he is, Rory Sutherland is a Vice-Chairman Ogilvy UK.

He co-founded a behavioral science practice within the agency.

Before founding Ogilvy Change, Rory was a copywriter and creative director at Ogilvy for over 20 years, having joined as a graduate trainee in 1988.

He has variously been President of the IPA, Chair of the Judges for the Direct Jury at Cannes, and has spoken at TED Global.

He’s a writer, speaker, and inspiration.

We said lots of things, such as

1. B2B decision-making is definitely not exempt from the psychological analysis

2. The key to B2B is understanding business people’s problems

3. B2B buyers make their decisions to avoid blame and that's why we have defensive decision making.

4. Unlimited seating capacity greatly impacts online events

5. Spreadsheets and data can’t read human emotions

6. The reward for thinking weird is greater than the risk

And we dived deeper into more with amazing examples from everyday life.

Now tell me, what are some of the most known biases in B2B that you're seeing?

p.s. find Rory on Twitter @rorysutherland and feel free to reach out to him to continue the conversation

10 Feb 2021MJ Peters: How To Boost Your B2B Marketing Strategy00:47:27

Funky Marketing is a podcast in which we're talking with entrepreneurs, marketers, advertisers, designers, artists, and all those people that are doing a good job for good people.

It is organized by Funky Marketing.

Your host is Nemanja Zivkovic, CEO, and Founder of Funky Marketing.

This episode is a part of the Funky Marketing Top Vices awards, and MJ Peters is one of those voices.

MJ is a VP Marketing at Firetrace, challenging industrial companies to think differently about marketing. She's interested in shaking up the way we do things on an industrial scale.

She told the board of one company to develop a fire detector for dog owners. One year later, she pitched an audience of 60 senior execs on an IoT sensor for live fish transport. The first thing got her laughed out of the room. The second one won her team 1st place and $150k in funding.

She learned from both experiences, so she wouldn't change a thing.

It turns out that the fish project was ROI positive in under 5 months. That success was enough to propel her into her first leadership role, heading up marketing for Firetrace.

As the company's first ever VP of Marketing, she changed how the organization defines marketing - from the brochure department to a strategic driver for the business. Today, they use market insights to set demand generation, sales, and product strategy.

Her approach to leadership is simple - she tries to do all the things that she used to wish managers would do for her. She combines that with a player/coach mentality and an insatiable drive to produce results. She can honestly tell you that what she is most proud of in her career so far is her positive impact on some of the talented people that have worked for her.

She's also a co-host of The Industrial Marketing Show with Matthew Sciannella.

We talked about a variety of topics, such as:

Leading Group of Kids vs. Leading Marketing Job

Benefits of Modern vs. Traditional Marketing

Leadership Lessons: Having Right People in the Right Seats

How to Generate Demand for the Specific Niche?

07 Aug 2024Bootstrapping SaaS Success and Transforming Marketing Strategies - Peter Caputa00:51:08

In this episode of the Funky Marketing Podcast, I had an enlightening conversation with Peter Caputa, the CEO of Databox. Peter shared invaluable insights from his extensive experience in scaling SaaS companies, including his journey from bootstrapping Databox to achieving significant revenue growth. Here are some key takeaways and recommended actions from our discussion:

Key Insights:

- Bootstrapping vs. Venture Capital: Peter highlighted the benefits and challenges of bootstrapping Databox, emphasizing its freedom and flexibility compared to the fast-paced, high-pressure environment of venture capital-backed growth.

- Three Types of Agencies: Peter outlined three distinct approaches he sees among marketing agencies:

Check-the-Box Reporting: Agencies that do minimal reporting, often trying to make the process seem more complex than it is.

Client-Partner Agencies: Agencies that integrate deeply with their clients, ensuring campaigns generate ROI by connecting various data points (advertising, sales, finance) for comprehensive insights.

Strategic Agencies: Highly sophisticated firms acting as strategic partners, helping clients make sense of their data, compare performance, and connect business goals to actionable strategies.

- Evolution of Inbound and Content Marketing: The landscape has shifted dramatically. Inbound marketing now requires more sophisticated, multi-channel strategies. Simply publishing educational content is no longer enough. Successful strategies involve creating demand, telling compelling stories, and engaging with audiences across different platforms.

Importance of Data Integration: Peter stressed the need for businesses to consolidate their data into a single platform to enable better decision-making and leverage AI for performance insights.

- Empowering Teams with Data: Empowering team members with access to performance data is crucial for driving informed decisions and improving overall company performance.

Recommended Actions:

1. Consider Bootstrapping: If you’re starting a SaaS company, weigh the pros and cons of bootstrapping versus seeking venture capital. Bootstrapping can offer more control and less pressure to scale rapidly.

Identify Your Agency Type: Reflect on which of the three agency approaches your business aligns with and strive towards a more strategic partnership model with your clients.

2. Innovate Your Content Strategy: Move beyond traditional SEO. Focus on creating high-quality, multi-channel content that includes data-driven insights and engages your audience through various formats and platforms.

3. Integrate Your Data: Ensure all your business data is pulled into a single platform. This will not only help in making better decisions but also in leveraging AI to uncover insights that might be missed manually.

4. Empower Your Team: Make performance data accessible to your team members. Educate them on how different metrics impact the business to foster a culture of informed decision-making.

21 Aug 2024Homepage Pitfalls in B2B SaaS: How to Avoid Common Messaging Mistakes - Adam Kirsch00:51:30

Today, I had the pleasure of speaking with Adam Kirch, a seasoned messaging strategist and B2B conversion copywriter.

Adam is not just any copywriter; he's a B2B SaaS copywriter and messaging strategist who has mastered the art of turning vague homepage messaging into clear, compelling, and conversion-driven narratives.

He’s helped fast-growing startups like Helios.io, Raft.io, and neptune.ai transform their web presence, leading to impressive results—think 80% conversion lifts and 56% more qualified leads.

He shared some invaluable insights on how SaaS companies can elevate their messaging to stand out in crowded markets.

Key Takeaways:

Customer-Centric Messaging:

Many companies make the mistake of crafting messages too close to their own perspective, rather than their customers'. Adam emphasized the importance of truly understanding your customers—know what they value and why they choose your product over competitors. Your homepage messaging should reflect this deep understanding, not just generic benefits like "faster" or "easier."

The Importance of Differentiation:

In competitive SaaS markets, differentiation is key. Adam pointed out that many SaaS homepages look the same because they all try to meet customer expectations in the same way. However, it's crucial to highlight what makes your product unique as early as possible on the homepage to capture attention and stand out.

Structuring the Homepage:

Adam recommends using a messaging hierarchy that presents information in the order customers need to hear it. This means leading with differentiation and addressing the customer's main concerns upfront. Avoid cramming the page with unnecessary information; instead, focus on building trust and clearly communicating your value proposition.

Testing and Iteration:

Validate your messaging with your target audience using tools like Winter or Usertesting.com. Adam shared a cautionary tale of a company that saw a 90% drop in conversions after redoing their homepage messaging without customer input. Regularly iterate on your homepage based on customer feedback and performance metrics.

Action Steps:

Talk to Your Customers: Gather direct feedback to understand their pain points and what they value most about your product.

Refine Your Homepage: Ensure your homepage clearly differentiates your product and aligns with customer expectations.

Test Your Messaging: Use tools and customer feedback to validate and refine your messaging continuously.

Adam's insights remind us that effective messaging isn't just about what we want to say—it's about what our customers need to hear. Let's get closer to our customers and let their voices guide our messaging strategies.

14 Nov 2023Intersection of product value and go-to-market messaging in B2B - Erica Jenkins00:46:35

My guest today is Erica Jenkins! She has over 30,000 hours in B2B Enterprise SaaS, heading up Product, UX, and GTM teams for 15 years from startup to scale over $100 million on a global MarTech platform, which gives me a different perspective on technology.

30 Jul 2024Insights on CFO Alignment, Small Teams, and Effective Metrics 00:54:13

In the latest episode of the Funky Marketing Podcast, I tackled some of the most pressing questions I get from you all. Here's a quick rundown of the key insights we covered:

1. Demand Creation vs. Demand Capture: A Balanced Approach

- Demand Creation involves generating awareness and interest among potential customers who aren't actively looking for your product. It's about planting seeds for future opportunities.

- Demand Capture focuses on converting interest into action from those already in the market to buy. Think PPC, SEO, and retargeting ads.

- Why Balance is Key: Companies that only focus on demand capture miss out on 95% of potential customers who aren't yet in the market but could be in the future.

2. Building Relationships with Your CFO

- Aligning marketing goals with financial objectives ensures you get the necessary budget and support.

- Regular communication helps the finance team understand the long-term value of your strategies, not just short-term gains.

- Strong relationships mean your CFO can advocate for your marketing budget, understanding the value of your strategies.

3. Importance of Small, Agile Marketing Teams

- Speed and Flexibility: Smaller teams can pivot quickly and adapt to market changes without bureaucracy.

- Efficiency and Innovation: Smaller teams often find creative solutions, maximizing resources to deliver impactful campaigns.

- Alignment and Focus: Easier to ensure everyone is aligned with the same goals, leading to more cohesive and focused efforts.

4. Effective Metrics Beyond MQLs and Demo Requests

- Cost Per Opportunity (CPO): Measures the efficiency of marketing spend.

- Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC): Total cost of acquiring a new customer, including marketing and sales expenses.

- Pipeline Velocity: Tracks the speed at which leads move through the sales funnel, indicating sales process efficiency.

- Engagement Metrics: Time spent engaging with content, social media interactions, and email behavior.

- Brand Awareness: Social listening tools and self-reported attribution questions in forms.

I hope these insights help you in your marketing journey! Feel free to share your thoughts and ask any questions. Let’s keep the conversation going. 🎙️

28 Aug 2024Paid Search vs. Paid Social Strategies - Roman Krs00:58:00

In the latest episode of the Funky Marketing Podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Roman from Grouts Online, a true expert in B2B SaaS marketing. We dove deep into the nitty-gritty of paid search and social strategies, and let me tell you, there are some game-changing insights you won't want to miss.

💡 Key Takeaways:

Paid Search vs. Paid Social: Understand the strengths and limitations of each. Paid search can give you quick wins, especially in less competitive spaces, while paid social is more of a slow burn, gradually building awareness and trust over time.

Setting Up for Success: Start with a solid foundation—know your audience, refine your targeting, and never underestimate the power of a well-crafted landing page.

Creative Content: In today’s crowded digital landscape, your ads need to stand out. We talked about the power of memes, thought leadership ads, and why your creatives should feel organic and engaging.

LinkedIn Ads on a Budget: Whether you're working with under 5k or have more to spend, the approach needs to be strategic. Retargeting, audience insights, and experimenting with content are key to maximizing ROI.

Self-Reported Attribution: Don’t just rely on the numbers—get the qualitative data too. It’s crucial for understanding how your marketing efforts are truly impacting your audience.

25 Jul 2024Game-changing marketing insights and customer secrets to help you win - Andi Jarvis00:56:08

In our latest Funky Marketing Podcast episode, I had the pleasure of hosting Andi Jarvis, Strategy Director at Eximo Marketing and the Strategy Sessions podcast host. Andi shared incredible insights on how customer feedback can revolutionize your marketing strategy.

Actionable Tips:

1. Conduct Regular Customer Conversations:

Schedule regular calls or meetings with your customers to discuss their experiences and gather feedback. Focus on understanding their problems, not just their desires. Ask questions like, "What challenges are you facing?" rather than "What do you want?"

2. Differentiate Between Strategy and Tactics:

Clearly define your business goals and target audience (strategy).

Develop specific actions to reach these goals (tactics), ensuring they align with your overall strategy. Regularly review and adjust your tactics to stay on course.

3. Master the Fundamentals:

Ensure your basic processes and systems are solid. This includes having clear messaging, a user-friendly website, and reliable customer service.

Regularly revisit and refine these fundamentals to avoid long-term issues.

4. Engage Directly with Customers:

Don’t rely solely on focus groups or third-party research. Engage directly with your customers through surveys, interviews, and feedback forms.

Use complaints as opportunities to learn and improve your products or services.

5. Maintain Brand Consistency:

Keep your brand identity consistent across all platforms and interactions. This includes visual elements, tone of voice, and customer service.

Regularly communicate your brand values and mission to all employees to ensure a unified representation.

6. Test and Learn:

Use small-scale tests to gather data and insights before committing to large-scale campaigns. Experiment with different markets or customer segments to identify new opportunities.

7. Prioritize Customer Experience:

Ensure every interaction with your brand leaves a positive impression. This can be through timely responses, helpful support, or personalized experiences. Regularly review customer touchpoints and make improvements based on feedback.

8. Focus on Solving Customer Problems:

Create content and solutions that address specific customer pain points at different stages of their journey. Move beyond just providing information—aim to guide customers towards the next step in their decision-making process.

9. Balance Performance and Brand Marketing:

Invest in both performance marketing (short-term sales) and brand marketing (long-term brand building). Aim for a balance, such as the 60/40 rule (60% brand, 40% performance), but adjust based on your industry and goals.

9. Stay Nimble and Adapt:

Be prepared to adjust your strategy based on new data and market changes.

Encourage a culture of flexibility and continuous improvement within your team.

Tune In Now! This episode is packed with practical advice and real-world examples that can help you fine-tune your marketing strategy. Don't miss out on Andi's expert insights!

26 May 2022How To Set Up The Foundation And Find The Best Strategy To Grow Your Startup - Vukasin Vukosavljevic01:00:57

Growing a startup is a daunting task. There are a million things to think about and a million different ways to approach each one. Enough to make your head spin and your stomach churn.

But don't worry, as always, we've got you covered.

When it comes to growing a startup, setting up the foundation is one of the most important steps.

Think about it, you can't build a big house on a shaky foundation, can you? Even if you manage to do that, it's only a matter of time before it all comes crashing down. The same goes for your startup so it's obvious that setting up a strong foundation is of utmost importance.

However...

Setting up a strong foundation is not enough, you also need to have a solid strategy in place. A strategy that will help you grow your startup and take it to the next level.

Now, the question is:

How do you actually go about setting up the foundation and finding the best strategy to grow your startup?

You're in luck because that's exactly what we're going to be talking about today.

So, if anyone knows a thing or two about setting up the foundation and finding the best strategy to grow your startup it's definitely Vukasin. So sit back, relax, and prepare to take some notes.

Here's an overview of what we talked about:

0:00 - Intro

Value Creation: Investors acquiring companies aim to uncover value creation levers. Shiv discussed the crucial role of a strong marketing strategy in enhancing enterprise value post-acquisition.

The First 100 Days: The first quarter after an acquisition is pivotal. Shiv outlined the critical steps companies should take in this period, including getting data in order, reallocating budgets, and ensuring the right team is in place.

Understanding Core Business: Shiv advised companies, especially those transitioning from services to products, to clearly define their core business and expand into adjacencies that complement their strengths.

23 Nov 2021Nemanja Zivkovic: Leveraging LinkedIn for Demand Generation00:59:00

Nemanja here! What's up, guys? Today I want to share with you an episode of another podcast where I was a guest. It was a podcast hosted by my friend Yaagneshwaran Ganesh or shorter Yarg. The podcast is called The ABM conversation podcast, one of the best out there when it comes to b2b marketing. And I'm really glad that I had a chance to be on it and share. And to be honest, I forgot to share it with you. But a few days ago, Yaag reminded me that the episode is one of the top 10 most listened to episodes of the podcast, people keep coming back to the episode and listening to it so I said, well, I need to share this with you, with my audience. So what did we talk about? We've discussed how to best leverage LinkedIn for demand generation and growth. Specifically, we talked about the way we at Funky Marketing used LinkedIn, the way I used it to go from solopreneur to the fast-growing, Funky Marketing team that we have today. We talked about our approach to content creation and distribution on LinkedIn, we talked about the trade-off between ads and organic marketing, and what could be an ideal balance. We talked about, you know, the way you can leverage LinkedIn pages the right way, but also, we tackled topics like a misconception to believe that customers who have the least amount of complaints are the best and a lot more. So there you go.

24 Nov 2023Unveiling the Synergy of Marketing and Sales: A Game-Changing Conversation - Rob Freedman00:44:57

Hey, marketing and sales enthusiasts! Just wrapped up an incredible podcast episode with Rob Freedman, Head of Growth at Zuper, a maestro in harmonizing sales and marketing strategies. We dove deep into areas where many struggle, yet few dare to explore.

Rob likes to talk about bridging the gap between Marketing, Business Development, and Sales, and ensuring all are aligned, and communicating.

With over 20 years of experience, he's an entrepreneurial-minded marketing and sales executive with a strong background in team building, sales development, demand generation, paid search, analytics, email marketing, social media, display advertising, and SEO.

Here's a sneak peek:

🔗 Aligning Sales & Marketing: The age-old challenge! Rob shed light on bridging these often siloed departments. It's not about parallel paths; it's about creating a single, unified roadmap towards shared goals. Think about it – when these two forces align, magic happens!

🌟 Evolving Buyer Journeys: We talked about understanding the evolving nature of buyer journeys. It’s no longer a linear path; it’s an intricate web of touchpoints. Rob emphasized the need to recognize and adapt to this change for impactful marketing and sales strategies.

💡 Power of Storytelling: Here’s a nugget – it’s all about the story! Crafting compelling narratives around your brand, solutions, and customer successes can significantly elevate your sales and marketing efforts. Remember, people connect with stories, not just features and benefits.

🚀 Innovation in Marketing Tactics: Rob shared some out-of-the-box marketing strategies. From guerilla marketing to leveraging digital platforms, it's about being where your customers are and engaging them in unique, memorable ways.

🤝 Sales as Relationship Building: Moving away from transactional to relational – that's where the focus should be. Sales are not just about closing deals; it’s about building trust and rapport. This perspective shift can be a game changer in how you approach potential clients.

💼 Change Management in Sales Processes: Adaptability is key in today’s dynamic market. Embracing change, whether in technology adoption or process transformation, is crucial for staying relevant and ahead of the curve.

📈 Measuring Success Beyond Numbers: It’s not just about hitting targets; it’s about creating sustainable and meaningful growth. Rob highlighted the importance of looking at the bigger picture, focusing on long-term relationships rather than short-term gains.

29 Sep 2021Nemanja Zivkovic: Relationship-centric Era is coming00:23:21

Sometimes you think your purpose is one thing, but life is ever-changing. There are levels to this shit.

But you’ve got to redesign and clarify your purpose. That's life.

Money or whatever it is can not stop you from catching one.

Crush it to get a clear perspective, just like I'm doing in a GIF below.

👆 This was said by Sean Combs, also known by the stage names Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Puffy, or Diddy, an American rapper, record executive, record producer, and entrepreneur.

Now let me add my point of view. 👇

My goal was never to build the biggest company.

Damn, I was even ok being the second guy in a company.

I have a goal of being the best version of myself, whatever that might be, and wherever that might take me.

I wanna get myself in a situation to help as many people and companies as possible with what I know, and sometimes I need more people by my side to do it.

That's why I work with other people. Not to be able to say I'm a boss, or whatever people are saying these days.

For example, I gave myself a CVO (Chief Vision Officer) position for a while not because Funky Marketing is that big. We're not that big. And I'm not that special.

For the Funky Marketing, Founder is just fine. Or CEO, because people respect more CEOs than Founders, for some reason.

I named myself CVO because I needed to do something new to get myself in the right conversations because one of the things we're doing is changing the way companies do things. Nothing else. And it served its purpose very well.

But let me get back to my main topic..

We're living in an ever-changing world. We all need to change and not only follow the existing changes but be the ones that are starting those changes.

It's not enough just to have a good or a great product. Or service.

We now live in Relationship Centric era.

Today customers want to know you as a person, not just a company. They want to engage with you as people and relate to you on an emotional level.

In this Relationship-Centric Era, your success is no longer driven by what your product does, but by who you are as a brand.

The companies that do things right are the ones that create stories about who they are, why they matter, and show how their product makes people’s lives better. They have a narrative, not just a brand promise.

The Relationship-Centric Era is all about telling your story with authenticity and presenting your company as something you are passionate about.

It’s all about creating a personal connection with your customers and forming heartfelt relationships.

It is time to make a shift from transactional marketing to relationship marketing – from pushing out the same messages over and over again to building meaningful, authentic relationships with your audience.

While you have time, whoop your own ass before somebody else (competitors, industry, market, world) does that for you.

13 Jan 2021Francisco Mahfuz: How to Use Storytelling in Communication01:07:20

Funky Marketing is a podcast in which we're talking with entrepreneurs, marketers, advertisers, designers, artists, and all those people that are doing a good job for good people.

It is organized by Funky Marketing.

Your host is Nemanja Zivkovic, CEO, and Founder of Funky Marketing.

This episode is a part of the Funky Marketing Top Vices awards, and Francisco Mahfuz is one of those voices.

When he was 10, his English teacher asked him to present in front of the class, and he said yes.

When he was 20, he got offered a job that involved speaking in front of sullen teenagers, and he said yes.

Throughout the years that followed, he said yes to every chance to tell his stories in front of an audience, and even became a National Champion of public speaking. But when friends suggested he should do it professionally, he always said “maybe one day.”

In early 2019, when a series of unexpected events turned his life upside down, a good friend asked him that same question again and, this time, he finally said yes.

When he's not speaking, coaching, or training, he's an independent financial advisor, helping people make better decisions about the money.

He's also a published author, International Wealth Manager through the Chartered Institute of Securities & Investments, and fully qualified as a UK adviser.

Who ever said men can't multi-task?

18 Aug 2021Andrei Zinkevich: Without marketing and sales alignment you're wasting your marketing budget01:02:11

Nemanja had a chance to sit down with Andrei Zinkevich, co-founder of Fullfunnel.io. His team and he help B2B Tech companies generate demand and land enterprise sales-qualified opportunities with full-funnel account-based marketing operations.

They talked about account-based marketing, B2B marketing strategy, sales enablement, nurturing strategic accounts, etc. Nemanja asked Andrei lots of questions he wanted to know the answer to, so they talked about things like:

- What does it mean for the marketing team if the sales team is aware of the company and what they're doing? Does it change the role of marketing?

- If you don’t have marketing and sales alignment and don’t audit how your sales team works, will you actually waste your marketing budget? What if you rank for your keywords on Google, if you have the best sales copy and highly-performed ads? Is that changing something?

- What can you do, as an SMB, instead of copying giants?

- One of the most common mistakes that are killing SaaS MRR is focusing their marketing on the segment that doesn't generate core revenue.

- Who should create demand in the company? What’s the sales role?

- Do webinars still work? How to get results out of them?

We talked about these topics and more.

20 Jan 2021Lorena Morales: Targeting Wrong People With Wrong Products and Messaging01:03:00

In this episode, our guest was Lorena Morales.

It all started as a fascination with TIME—an abstract construct that the whole tangible world depends on. It’s the foundation of everything we have done and will do, and above all, I believe in making the most of every minute.

Having lived and worked in several cities around the world, she has gotten the chance to appreciate foreign cultures, embrace diverse mindsets, and apply both to her work. For her, having a global mindset has meant having a greater arsenal of ideologies with which to approach complex problems. Likewise, she is able to better understand people despite their differences, which she believes is strength in business and in life. Education has always played a significant role in everything she does. Her last degree in Strategic Design Management is an indirect product of the multicultural foundation she has built her life upon, both personally and professionally.

As a marketer, what inspires her is watching her ideas take shape—especially the less conventional ones. To her, creating or reimagining a company’s brand means turning potential into something concrete. Currently, she is the head of marketing at Go Nimbly, the first revenue operations consultancy with the goal of driving high-growth companies to increase revenue by 26% through eliminating operational silos.

Being new to this industry has again brought her back to her core professional belief, which is that every single business relies first and foremost on its people—the human capital that allows for collaboration, trust, and success. In an ever-changing, technological world, these are the things that can't be automated, and will never stop being valuable and inspiring.

She's Currently:

- Showing up to every ABM event, conference, and webinar she can find

- Plotting her next concert/music festival adventure

We tackled a lot of topics:

Bullying and the Importance of Family Being Supportive

How to Learn to Accept a Great Change

Challenges of Being Immigrant in the US

If You Don’t Try, You Lose the Chance to Win

Targeting Wrong People With Wrong Products and Messaging

16 Dec 2020Gaetano DiNardi: How to cut through the noise and compete against the industry giants00:47:54

This episode is a part of the Funky Marketing Top Vices awards, and Gaetano DiNardi is one of those voices.

Gaetano began his professional career as a lost college graduate who didn't want to do anything in life other than become a platinum superstar music producer. It was his dream to produce gold records for the biggest artists in the world.  He spent 5 years as a full-time music producer & songwriter in New York and worked with artists like Fat Joe, Shaggy, and Ryan Leslie.

He loved it (and hated it) at the same time.

The grind was brutal but gifted him with a unique competitive advantage in the business world.  He realized that musicians & B2B companies have the exact same problems.

- Cutting through the noise.
- Building a trusted brand.
- Developing an engaged audience.
- Competing against the industry giants.
- Converting leads into paying customers.
- Transforming new customers into loyalists.  He faced these challenges as a music producer trying to grow my brand.  And without knowing it, he became a self-taught digital marketer.  Literally, he fell ass backwards into SEO by blogging about his perils in the music industry.

Eventually, his blog earned hundreds of thousands of views. His articles were earning free organic traffic because they ranked highly in Google.  He built transferable skills and landed his first "real job" at an SEO company.

The rest was history.

In his first month of doing professional-level SEO, he was working with clients like Major League Baseball, Trojan Condoms and First Response Pregnancy Testing Kits.  Just imagine, going from music production to doing marketing for condoms and the female anatomy!

His background as a musician combined with my technical marketing acumen creates a unique hybrid of creative & analytical skills - this is the secret sauce that sets him apart from the rest.  He has earned results for VC backed startups, popular eCommerce brands, and Fortune 500 behemoths.

Today, he's responsible for Demand Generation Marketing at Nextiva, a leader in Cloud Communications.  His core specialty is Full-Funnel Demand Gen, with a focus on new customer acquisition via channels like SEO/SEM, Conversion Rate Optimization, Marketing Automation.

10 Mar 2022B2B Marketing Isn't So Different From B2C After All (Here's How To Make It Work!) - Evan Patterson00:56:47

What if I told you that B2B marketing isn't so different from B2C after all? Although there are some key distinctions, the basic principles of marketing and human psychology still apply.

When I decided to start Funky Marketing I had the vision to change the way B2B marketing is done. I wanted to make it more human and less transactional. I wanted to bring B2C marketing principles to the B2B world.

After all, people are people, regardless of whether they're buying a pair of shoes or a new software solution. And when you treat them like human beings, they respond in kind. They're more likely to trust you, to buy from you, and to recommend you to their friends.

The truth is, B2B marketing doesn't have to be so different from B2C marketing. In fact, by borrowing some of the basic principles from B2C, you can make your B2B marketing much more effective and more engaging.

In this episode of the funky marketing show, I called Evan, Head of Content & Community at trender.ai, creative, outcome-oriented content and community marketing professional with a love of all things SaaS and startups, focused on making work more human by promoting LGBTQ+ rights, fighting racial injustices, developing team-building activities, and encouraging professionals to prioritize their mental health, to talk about how to make B2B marketing more human.

Here's an overview of what we talked about:

0:00 - Intro

2:09 - How people look at diversity in Serbia vs US

5:43 - Diversity in business - Can you be different?

12:11 - How did development of the personal brands changed the way we sell and hire

15:33 - Here’s how influencers choose which tools to promote

21:11 - B2B works just like B2C - people are selling to people

25:56 - It's about experience in doing the things, not necessarily in the industry

31:15 - The lessons we learned from marketing along the way

37:40 - Copycats are everywhere!

44:02 - Do we need the community to be successful at building a startup?

46:01 - How do we define social selling today?

49:25 - How to make B2B more human?

53:13 - Outro

Enjoy!

05 Jul 2024Transforming Marketing: B2B Focus and What's Next for Funky Marketing Podcast00:31:26

The vacation is over! Welcome to another season of the Funky Marketing podcast. In this episode, I'm reminding you of the history and purpose of the Funky Marketing Podcast.

The initial episodes aimed at establishing authority in B2B marketing and helped me transition from B2C to B2B marketing. It helped me build trust and reputation in the US market.

I'm sharing with you what kind of work I did in the last few months, including moving and real estate companies.

I shared a few things that bother me, like the importance of understanding the buyer’s journey and customer interaction, along with challenges in tech and SaaS companies regarding marketing ego and lack of customer understanding.

Things haven't changed in marketing since the 1950s, but how customers buy has. So I explained the traditional 4Ps of marketing: Product, Price, Place, Promotion, and the addition of two more Ps: People and Presentation.

Emphasis on customer experience and its impact on marketing success should be at the core of everything B2B companies do.

It's essential to have a holistic marketing approach: combining organic, social, advertising, referrals, partnerships, and events. Build relationships and trust with customers, and conduct continuous customer and market research.

I talked about the plans for the podcast's future episodes and focus on B2B marketing, including the introduction of new content types for my LinkedIn, like LinkedIn newsletters and vertical videos that emphasize actionable tips.

23 Dec 2020Peep Laja Strategic Narrative and Brand Polarization As the Key to Positioning00:43:16

Our guest was Peep Laja.  He's a former champion of optimization and experimentation turned business builder. He does a lot of thinking, reading, and writing around business, strategy, and optimization.

He's building a portfolio of companies, serving as a founder and my own angel investor. He uses the profits from existing businesses to build new ones.  What's different about his approach is that he's not acquiring companies or investing in startups. He builds each business from ground-up - from opportunity spotting to customer development to product-market fit. He takes the business to millions in revenue, builds a team, and eventually let them take over day-to-day business ops.

28 Feb 2022How Complexity is Killing Your B2B Marketing Success (And What to Do About It) - Jason Vana01:14:58

We all want to be the best at what we do. But too often, our big ambitions are getting in the way of success. This is especially true for marketers who have their heads so far down in the details that they can't see what's around them. There's nothing wrong with being detailed oriented but only when basics are covered.

The problem is that many people and many companies skim through the basics and dive into complex tactics, strategies, and ideas. And it's killing their B2B marketing success.

In this episode of the Funky Marketing podcast, I had the pleasure to sit with Jason Vana, the Founder of SHFT marketing, and talk about the importance of simplicity in everything we do, including marketing.

Here's an overview of what we talked about:

0:00 - Intro

2:02 - Balancing the time for yourself and for your own business

4:17 - Why do we need to keep things simple in everything we do

12:22 - Here why you should ask your customers why do they want to work with you

23:56 - Do the best customers come through referrals or not?

27:04 - Why branding strategy should always come first

32:16 - How to come up with the right messaging for your business

40:55 - Keep the strategy simple and your customers will trust you more

47:48 - The most important question you should ask yourself when identifying ideal customers

50:58 - One thing that causes distrust between a business and its customers

56:17 - Setting yourself up for success

57:57 - If you don’t know your ideal customer, nothing will work

01:07:28 - The majority of people that will reach out to you may never engage with your content

01:12:59 - Outro

It was a great conversation, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
