04 Feb 2022 | Are UK equities making a comeback? | 00:24:52
For years UK equities have been seen as laggards compared to the US. The UK market has been seen as too focused on value stocks such as banks and oil companies, with the focus on equity income often coming in for criticism. Indeed during 2021 investors pulled £4.4bn from UK equity funds. But has this changed? Since the beginning of 2022, amid rising inflation and interest rates, the Nasdaq has fallen by 12% and the S&P 500 has fallen by 6%. Meanwhile the FTSE 100 has remained stable, rising by a little under 1%. This week reporter Sally Hickey is joined by Ed Smith, co-chief investment officer at Rathbones, and Louise Kernohan, manager of the BNY Mellon UK Equity and BNY Mellon Sustainable UK Opportunities funds. They discuss the what might happen to UK equities if US growth stocks continue to struggle, whether the UK remains too focused on income stocks, why fund managers often appear so much more bullish on the UK than investors and whether attempts to encourage more growth stocks to list in London are likely to work. 24 Jul 2020 | Advice after coronavirus: Platforms | 00:27:25
Over the past few months, advice firms have been turned upside down as they attempt to adjust to the lockdown measures put in place to curb the coronavirus and the impact of the crisis on their business. For advisers, platforms were thoroughly in the spotlight. When the coronavirus crisis sent the UK into lockdown and effectively ended face-to-face meetings between advisers and clients for the foreseeable future, this presented an issue for an industry that still relied heavily on wet signatures. The latest FTAdviser Podcast sees reporter Imogen Tew discuss with Andy Bell, chief executive of AJ Bell, and Mark Polson, principal at the Lang Cat, how the platform sector has confronted the pandemic and what it will look like post-Covid. They discuss whether the pandemic has changed adviser expectations about the platforms they use, whether all platforms will make survive the coronavirus and what characteristics a successful platform will need after the lockdown. With the stamp duty holiday at an end and the Budget taking place next week, what does the future hold for stamp duty? Regularly referred to as the UK's "worst tax", stamp duty is regularly seen as in need of reform. Hosted by Damian Fantato, digital editor at FTAdviser, this week's podcast explores what the future of the stamp duty land tax looks like, and how its future could impact the housing market. He is joined by Mark Hayward, chief policy advisor at Propertymark, and David Hollingworth, associate director of communications at L&C Mortgages. 01 Mar 2021 | Talking Tax | 00:22:58
As we approach the end of the tax year, clients inevitably kick-start their tax planning. Perhaps we’d wish them to do this earlier, but let’s face it, tax isn’t the easiest thing for most people to grapple with as a concept. This FTAdviser in Focus podcast explores why tax can be so tricky to tackle. The panel talks to Simoney Kyriakou, senior editor for FTAdviser, about the language of tax reliefs, duties and allowances, and why education needs to start earlier. The panel also discusses how financial services need to be aware of people's vulnerabilities and lack of understanding when it comes to the jargon we use, and make sure we approach every client conversation in plain English. Joining this podcast are Peter Glancy, head of policy, pensions and investments for Scottish Widows; Martin Stewart, co-founder of The Money Group; and Sarah Saunders, manager at RSM. This week chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak his second Budget as the rollout of the coronavirus vaccine across the UK gives hope of a return to some degree of normality over the summer. Despite unveiling plenty of schemes to demonstrate how much he was investing in the UK economy, Sunak made clear that the bills racked up during the pandemic would soon be coming due. This meant several revenue-raising initiatives were announces, including an increase in corporation tax, frozen thresholds on income tax and capital gains tax and a frozen lifetime allowance on pensions - though the stamp duty holiday will continue for a little while longer as the government encourages more lenders back into the high loan-to-value mortgage market. FTAdviser digital editor Damian Fantato is joined by Claire Trott, head of pensions strategy at Technical Connection, Kevin Roberts, director of the L&G Mortgage Club, and Chris Etherington, private client partner at RSM to establish what this means for advisers. They discuss the various frozen thresholds, what the corporation tax hike might mean for dividends, how the lifetime allowance freeze could affect workers such as doctors and the concerns of boosting housing demand without also boosting supply. Over the course of the past 18 months, the government has spent a lot of money to get the UK through the Covid-19 pandemic. But Rishi Sunak, the chancellor of the Exchequer, has made repeatedly clear that the bills we have racked up during this period will soon be coming due. This puts into sharper relief the debates around tax which have been rumbling on in the background for several years. Reforms to capital gains tax, inheritance tax and pensions tax relief are often discussed, but might they finally become reality? This week FTAdviser's digital editor Damian Fantato is joined by the Office of Tax Simplification's Bill Dodwell to discuss some of the recent reports the body has published for HM Treasury on CGT and IHT, as well as its recent proposals to move the beginning and end of the tax year. 28 Aug 2020 | ‘Reckoning’ to come for fund management fees | 00:36:01
Centralised investment propositions have become an increasingly common part of advice businesses, with around four fifths of all firms running some form of centralised service. 12 Feb 2021 | What it takes to stay in the DB transfer market | 00:23:22
The market for providing advice on defined benefit transfers has shrunk by 46% over the past few years, as insurance costs and regulatory changes take their toll - and there are concerns this will be exacerbated by the contingent charging ban, which came into effect in October 2020. So what does it take for a financial advice firm to continue to provide financial advice? This week, reporter Amy Austin talks to two advisers who have remained in the market: Alistair Cunningham of Wingate Financial Planning and Dominic James Murray of Cameron James. They discuss how their firms have managed to remain in the DB transfer market, what impact the contingent charging could have, the role abridged advice could play and what it means for clients if the market continues to shrink. 11 Oct 2021 | How to help mortgage clients get back on their feet post-divorce | 00:22:36
Breaking up is always difficult. Quite apart from the emotional aspects, the financial aspects are particularly difficult for both parties, with division of assets often needing solicitors and court orders. Although there is a need for professional advice, too often people think they will simply split the assets - the man gets the pension; the woman (especially if she is the primary carer for the children) gets the house. Or the house might be sold and the equity split between the two. But these are not always the best courses of action; and while it may be a stereotype that the woman ends up with the house and the children, it is also true in the majority of cases. And this comes with its own problems on affordability, especially if the partners were not married. Talking to FTAdviser's senior editor, Simoney Kyriakou, about the issues facing women on divorce and separation are Abbie Hookway, managing director of touchstone education; Preeti Ferrier, area director for Just Mortgages; and Catherine Beaumont, independent mortgage adviser at London Money. 11 Feb 2022 | Stephen Timms on pension freedoms, guidance and advice | 00:14:45
The work and pensions select committee has published a report on the five years of pension freedoms which found that savers needed more support to navigate the pension regime. Overall, the MPs found pension policy had revolved too much around pension pots rather than the individuals who were relying on this money for their later life security. The committee said the government and regulators needed to play a more active role than they did when the pension freedoms were first introduced to help guide savers. This week FTAdviser news editor Amy Austin talks to Stephen Timms, the committee's chairman and a former pensions minister, about the report and the state of the pensions regime. They discuss what how pension freedoms should be reformed, and how savers could be encouraged to seek guidance or even advice. 07 Feb 2022 | Emerging trends in protection | 00:37:05
During 2020, advisers cited more interest in insurance than ever before. But with figures of sales tailing off in 2021, was this just a blip on the insurance radar? Are people truly seeing the value of protection or is this simply a knee-jerk reaction to Covid? Yet one trend that is emerging is a new proactivity among younger women aged 18 to 30. How can advisers capitalise on this current sentiment to encourage more clients and potential clients to consider taking out important health and life cover? Joining Simoney Kyriakou, senior editor of FTAdviser to about where emerging trends might be, are Sue Helmont, marketing director for AIG Life; Kathryn Knowles, co-founder of Cura Financial Services; and Tom Conner, director for Drewberry. 29 Oct 2021 | Autumn Budget 2021: The 'tax avoidance' Budget? | 00:25:04
This week chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak hailed his second Budget of 2021 as heralding a "new age of optimism" as the UK seeks to leave the Covid-19 pandemic behind it. Are things that simple? On its surface, the Budget focused on reforming alcohol duty and business rates, and tinkering with air passenger duty, leaving many areas financial advisers might worry about unaddressed. But with rising inflation, a hike in national insurance already in the pipeline and many allowances frozen in Sunak's previous Budget, for the panellists on this week's podcast the chancellor was carrying his own act of "tax avoidance". This week Damian Fantato, FTAdviser's digital editor, is joined by Claire Trott, divisional director for retirement and holistic planning at St James's Place, Chris Etherington, private client tax partner at RSM, and David Battersby, portfolio manager at Sanlam. They discuss why this Budget was more about the things left unsaid, why Sunak's optimism might not necessarily tally with some of the finer details in this week's fiscal statement and whether a solution has finally been found on the net-pay anomaly. Finally Amy asks whether 2021 will finally be the year we see changes in pension tax, and explains why the coronavirus has had an impact on the Sipp and Ssas market, and considers whether that will continue into the coming year. 10 Aug 2021 | How to talk pensions across the generations | 00:35:22
Much has been made of the need to start saving as early as possible and to keep this habit going as long as possible. But when it comes to pension provision, are the current products available suitable for all generations? Is the current advice or perceived wisdom around pension planning as appropriate for someone aged 20 as it might be for someone in their 40s or 50s? And why should it matter how old someone is when it comes to having a proper conversation about long-term retirement provision? Joining Simoney Kyriakou, senior editor of FTAdviser, on this podcast to discuss all these issues and more, are Saksha Menezes, intern for FTAdviser; Sir Steve Webb, partner at LCP; and Robert Cochran, senior corporate pensions specialist for Scottish Widows. 27 Apr 2021 | Making sense of IR35 | 00:30:08
Millions of Britons are being affected by "ill-thought-out rules, which have come into force for the private sector. Whether these are freelancers, concerned about how the rule might be assessed, or businesses worried about how they assess the tax status of every freelance contractor they hire, IR35 has posed problems for both advisers and their clients. Joining Simoney Kyriakou, senior editor of FTAdviser, to talk about what the new rules mean for contractors, clients and for advice firms themselves, are three specialists: Nimesh Shah, chief executive of Blick Rothenberg; Susan Ball, partner at RSMUK and deputy president of the Chartered Institute of Taxation; and Justin Small founder of the Future Strategy Club. 09 Oct 2020 | What advisers need to know about behavioural finance | 00:41:57
The advice industry is constantly evolving, and advisers are continually pushing the norms in order to get to know their clients better and improve the suitability process. Regulators and advisers agree that matching an investment to an investor is underpinned by risk tolerance and financial ability — but can advisers go further to understand the emotional ability of a client to take that risk? Is there a ‘behavioural capacity’ that can determine how a client may interact with their investment portfolio? In this episode, reporter Imogen Tew is joined by Greg Davies, head of behavioural science at Oxford Risk, Alistair Wilson, head of platform strategy at Embark Group and Niall Gunn, managing director at Prosperis to discuss the possibilities. Then Imogen talks about the headlines of the week with fellow reporters Rachel Mortimer and Amy Austin. 06 Nov 2020 | What the US election means for investors | 00:44:27

In this edition of the FTAdviser podcast, special projects editor David Thorpe is joined by Mikhail Zverev, head of global equities at Aviva Investors, Jeremy Thomas, head of global equities at Sarasin, and Ed Smith, head of asset allocation research at Rathbones, to discuss what the election means for markets in 2020 and beyond. 19 Feb 2021 | What advisers can learn from Gamestop | 00:28:24
There are many changes caused by the coronavirus crisis that were perhaps predictable at the start of the pandemic — a shift to working from home, a rise in home gym sales and far too many banana breads being baked. But one that was perhaps less easy to forecast was the rise in DIY investing and day trading. Retail platforms have experienced a huge wave of new clients, equity trades have more than doubled, and the recent Gamestop battle between amateur investors and hedge funds caused a trading frenzy. But what does this mean for advisers? How seriously should the advice market take the growth of retail trading, and how might they benefit from the trend? In this episode, reporter Imogen Tew is joined by Greg Davies, head of behavioural science at Oxford Risk, and Martin Bamford, head of client education at Informed Choice to discuss the what it means for advisers. Then, Imogen discusses the Pensions Bill and the rise of vulnerable clients with fellow reporters Rachel Mortimer and Amy Austin. 19 Mar 2021 | A year of coronavirus: what have advisers learnt? | 00:41:58
Exactly a year ago, prime minister Boris Johnson began placing the UK into lockdown, closing pubs, cafes and restaurants as the coronavirus pandemic took hold. A few days later he would tell the UK population to stay at home. A year on from these dramatic events, many advisers have changed the way they run their businesses and meet their clients. On this week's podcast, FTAdviser digital editor Damian Fantato talks to three firms of different sizes about how they have coped and what they have learnt. He is joined by Lee Hartley, chief executive of Fairstone, Neil Moles, chief executive of Progeny and Victor Sacks, director of VS Associates to discuss what they have learnt, how they have adapted and what an exit from the pandemic might look like for advisers. They also discuss how recording meetings with clients could leave to a lower Financial Services Compensation Scheme levy, how providers and platforms have coped with the challenge and what the future might hold for acquisitions and vertical integration if the pandemic comes to a close. Fixing regulatory fees is an urgent issue - but only part of the problem, according to guests on the latest FTAdviser Podcast. 08 Nov 2021 | Crypto currency ETFs: The next trend? | 00:22:26
In October, the US Securities and Exchange Commission gave the green light to the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF. This is the first US bitcoin futures-based exchange-traded fund, and for many this was seen as a turning point for cryptocurrencies when it began trading at the end of October. But the SEC drew a line in the sand just a few days later, refusing to authorise a leveraged ETF fund tracking a basket of synthetic crypto assets. This suggested the regulator wants to limit new bitcoin-related products to those that provide unleveraged exposure to bitcoin futures contracts, reducing gearing risk on what many see as an already risky emerging asset class - and which some see as pure speculation. Yet with currency trading site Forex Suggest predicting that, by 2024, cryptocurrencies Bitcoin, Etherium and Dai are on track to break into the top 10 best performing assets in terms of market capitalisation, crypto is not something that can be dismissed easily. And this is where exchange-traded funds might come into play: offering a regulated product to a regulated advice market, tracking the rises and falls of this emergent asset class. Joining senior editor Simoney Kyriakou on the latest FTAdviser InFocus podcast to discuss these issues are Rufus Round, chief executive of GlobalBlock, and Jason Guthrie Head of Digital Assets for Wisdom Tree. As interest rates start to rise, the prospect of lockdowns recede into the past and global economies reopen, the high-growth nature of emerging markets may become particularly relevant. But investing in emerging markets is not without risk and this week, FTAdviser special projects editor David Thorpe is joined by Fahad Hassan, chief investment officer at Albermarle Street Partners, Gustoavo Medeiros, head of research at Ashmore, and Zehid Osmani, who runs the Martin Currie Global Long-term Unconstrained Equity fund, to discuss the outlook for these regions. 28 Jan 2022 | Will a risk-based FSCS levy become reality? | 00:24:23
The Financial Services Compensation Scheme levy may be one of the issues which most vexes advisers who run their own firms. Indeed the overall FSCS levy has increased in nominal terms from less than £300m in 2011-12 to an expected levy of £717m in 2021-22. The Financial Conduct Authority has accepted this situation is not ideal and it has admitted the burden of the levy has fallen on firms which have done nothing to bring about these liabilities. So now the regulator has set out plans to address this by tackling the root cause of high FSCS costs through a more stringent appointed representative regime, reforms to prudential rules and the prospect of a risk-based levy. This week FTAdviser digital editor Damian Fantato is joined by Tim Fassam, director of government relations and policy at Pimfa, and Claudia Clay, risk and regulatory director at The Private Office, to discuss the proposals. They discuss the FCA's proposal that high-net worth individuals could be ineligible for compensation, whether the scope of FSCS protection should change and whether a risk-based levy is ever likely to see the light of day. 12 Mar 2021 | Has Rishi Sunak done enough to help 'generation rent'? | 00:23:08
Last week chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak announced an extension to the stamp duty holiday and a government guarantee scheme to encourage lenders to start offering high loan-to-value mortgages again, after the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic. This week Damian Fantato, digital editor of FTAdviser, is joined by Danny Belton, head of lender relationships at Legal & General Mortgage Club, and David Hollingworth, associate director at L&C Mortgages, to discuss whether this is enough to help turn 'generation rent' into 'generation buy'. They discuss whether Sunak's proposals will have their intended effect, whether the government is stocking demand at the expense of supply, whether the problem for 'generation rent' is loan-to-income ratios rather than LTV and whether products such as 10-year fixed rates could help. 15 Oct 2021 | What role do providers have in plugging the advice gap? | 00:26:52
As long as there have been financial advisers, there has been debate about how to plug the advice gap. But research has found that some 39m people have never sought any professional advice or guidance for their finances, and one in five advisers won't serve someone with less than £100,000. So there is clearly a gap to be plugged, but does the plugging of it fall to advisers? What role do providers have? And do the rules around advice and guidance help providers support their clients? This week Damian Fantato, digital editor of FTAdviser, is joined by Jamie Jenkins, director of policy at Royal London, and Prakash Chandramohan, director of strategy at Tisa, to discuss this. They discuss how the boundary between advice and guidance can be improved, how greater personalisation can help support savers who don't necessarily need advice, and why providers err on the side of caution when it comes to supporting their clients. 10 Mar 2021 | Next Act: The complexity of retirement | 00:33:03
The events of the past 12 months have made many previously mundane things, such as going to the supermarket, more complicated. 07 Jun 2021 | Your property is not your pension. Or is it? | 00:34:04
Property investment - be it buy-to-let or commercial property funds - has had a rough time over the past few years. Questions over the liquidity not just of pure bricks and mortar but also issues with daily dealing property unit trusts have caused a lot of concern to investors. There have been fund suspensions following the Brexit vote in 2016 and then again in 2020 as Covid bit into market valuations. And there has been so much tax twiddling that buy-to-let as an investment has become unattractive for all but the most professional investor. So what is left? Is it one's house? Yet as our panel explains, you cannot just rely on the value of your home to provide a lump sum on the sale of it in retirement; and there's also equity release to factor into the equation. This panel of experts tells FTAdviser In Focus how property in its various forms might not be the sole pensionable asset on which you can rely, but can still play a part in a diversified pension plan. Joining Simoney Kyriakou, senior editor of FTAdviser, is Darius McDermott, founder of FundCalibre; Martin Stewart, director and co-founder of The Money Group; Andrew Tully, technical director for Canada Life; and James Burns, partner, investment management, at Smith & Williamson. 04 Jun 2021 | How the FCA's new duty of care might affect advisers | 00:19:20
The Financial Conduct Authority has published proposals for what it calls a "new consumer duty" which it says will set clearer and higher expectations for firms' standards of care towards consumers. The regulator has said it is concerned about firms providing information which is misleading or difficult to understand, and products or services which don't represent value. It says it wants firms to ask themselves 'would I be happy if I were treated like this?' or 'would I recommend this service to my friends and family?'. This week FTAdviser digital editor Damian Fantato is joined by Sally Plant, head of financial planning at the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments, and Stefan Fura, co-founder of advice firm Furnley House. They discuss whether the FCA's proposals are a good idea, how advisers can demonstrate they are taking their duty of care towards consumers seriously, and what changes advisers might need to make if this "new consumer duty" becomes reality. In the UK, inflation has reached 5.5 per cent - its highest level in more than a decade - and it is predicted to get even higher over the course of 2022. This surge of inflation was originally expected to be transitory but some are now reassessing this. This week FTAdviser's special projects editor David Thorpe talks to a panel of investment specialists about investing at a time of surging inflation. He is joined by Paul Graig, senior portfolio manager at Quilter, Stephen Bell, chief economist at BMO Global Asset Management, and Christopher Rossbach, chief investment officer at JStern and Co. They discuss the options for central banks and whether they are likely to make mistakes in their monetary policy reactions as they attempt to keep inflation under control. They also discuss whether assets can be expected to react as they normally might given the unusual nature of the Covid-19 recovery and how investing for income might be affected. 09 Feb 2021 | Vulnerability: Taking stock of investment risk post-Covid | 00:36:18
The Financial Conduct Authority is keen to make sure financial services companies are treating customers fairly and paying mind to whether the client is potentially vulnerable. But has Covid made us all fall into this category at some level? This is not just relevant at the time of the initial consultation but also ongoing – are our investments that we chose three years ago still suitable? Are they going to be suitable in three or five or even seven years' time? How does one best assess investment suitability when it comes to advising people who may be in a vulnerable position right now – and how do we best assess their appetite for risk? Talking to Simoney Kyriakou, senior editor of FTAdviser, are three experts from the financial services world: Serena Van Der Meulen, director of Van Der Meulen Associates; Mark Polson, principal and founder of the Lang Cat consultancy, and Myron Jobson, personal finance campaigner for Interactive Investor. The FTAdviser In Focus podcast is the monthly podcast for financial advisers, brought to you by FTAdviser. 14 May 2021 | How advisers can make the most of data | 00:24:24
One of the clichés of the 21st century is to say data is the new oil but, like a lot of clichés, there's a kernel of truth in there struggling to come out. Indeed companies like Facebook have turned data into an awful lot of money and an awful lot of controversy. But what does this mean for advisers? How can they put the data they hold to good use to improve the service they offer? And what are the pitfalls? This week FTAdviser digital editor Damian Fantato is joined by Nick Eatock, chief executive of Intelliflo, and Russell Andrews, head of solutions at SEI. They discuss what data is in the context of financial advice, what uses advisers can put their data to - both for their own businesses and for their clients, whether advisers are making enough use of it and what regulatory issues there might be. 27 Aug 2021 | What role do academies have in the future of advice? | 00:36:48
The gap between those who need advice and those who can access it - the so-called 'advice gap' - is one of the long-standing conundrums the financial advice profession has faced. For some advice firms, the solution is to encourage more people into the profession to level out the supply and demand imbalance which has led to a surge in the number of advice academies being launched. So what role do these academies - many of which are associated with large, vertically integrated advice firms - have in the future of the advice profession? And what can individual advisers do to help expand the profession? This week FTAdviser senior reporter Sonia Rach is joined by Sarah Lord, president of the Personal Finance Society, and Matt Jordan, academy development manager at Openwork, to find out more about what the industry is already doing and what it could do more of. They discuss the growth of academies in the industry, whether it will help close the advice gap, what the next generation of clients will need and the importance of teaching soft-skills. 11 Mar 2022 | How can we solve the UK housing crisis? | 00:34:21
It is no secret the UK housing market is facing one of its biggest supply crises yet. At the start of this year there were 350,980 properties for sale in the UK, 36 per cent fewer than at the start of 2020. As the number of houses available to buyers remains low, house prices have simply continued to rise. In this podcast, FTAdviser is joined by Imran Hussain, a Nottingham-based broker at Harmony Financial Services, and Ellie Bateman, policy officer at Propertymark - the professional body for estate agents. They discuss the housing supply crisis in its current state, and what can be done to solve it. The FTAdviser Podcast is the weekly podcast for financial advisers, brought to you by FTAdviser. 18 Mar 2022 | Will the online safety bill tackle scams? | 00:21:29
This month, the government has finally succumbed to pressure from the industry and included paid-for adverts in the scope of the online safety bill. Essentially, this means social media platforms and search engines will have a legal duty to prevent paid-for fraudulent adverts appearing on their services. This is in the hope that fewer people will be scammed via this method. This week FTAdviser news editor Amy Austin talks to Tom Selby, head of retirement policy at AJ Bell, and Tim Fassam, director of government relations and policy at adviser trade body Pimfa, about whether these proposals will work. 10 Sep 2021 | Why Silicon Valley is the real threat, not ‘digital’ brokers | 00:30:09
Consolidation in the digital mortgage space has spiked in recent months as larger companies buy up the technology to service their own customer bases. Having attracted some hefty investments over the last year too - most notably the in August 2020, how much of a threat are these digital brokers? On this week's FTAdviser Podcast, reporter Ruby Hinchliffe is joined by Charlotte Nixon, mortgage adviser and protection proposition director at Quilter, and Billy Grimley, chief commercial officer at Smartr365. They discuss whether the rise of digital brokers is good for the mortgage industry, how big they might become in the mortgage broking market, what traditional mortgage brokers can learn from them and whether technology can help bridge the protection gap. 23 Mar 2022 | The evolution of responsible investing | 00:27:54
Impact investing is a term within the ESG eco-system which describes investing only in the instruments of companies that have a measurably positive impact on society. This distinguishes impact investing from other forms of ESG, which can be more focused on excluding companies on the basis of specific harm caused. But impact investing does have the same challenges as any other kind of ESG investing, in that clients face the risk of being left over exposed to a narrow range of sectors. In this FTAdviser Podcast, contributing editor David Thorpe speaks with Neil Goddin, impact investment fund manager at Artemis, and Steve Kenny, commercial director at Square Mile Consulting, on the the future of impact investing. This podcast is part of the Despatches series, sponsored by Artemis. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
25 Mar 2022 | Is the party over for ESG? | 00:25:47
UK investors put £37bn into environmental, social and governance funds during 2021, continuing the trend of these funds attracting huge amounts of money. But at the start of 2022, rising inflation and interest rates meant the growth stocks which tend to populate ESG funds underperformed. Indeed the MSCI ACWI ESG Universal index has outperformed the MSCI World index in each of the past five years but so far in 2022 it is lagging behind. This week FTAdviser reporter Sally Hickey is joined by Ben Yearsley of Fairview Investing and Ryan Hughes, head of investment research at AJ Bell, to discuss whether this is just a bump in the road for ESG or whether it's something more severe. They also discuss what it tells us that ESG inflows have not slowed down despite the recent underperformance, whether ESG and growth are necessarily intertwined, and what advisers and clients can learn from this period. 01 Apr 2022 | 'Get money in now': how the Spring Statement affects pensions | 00:20:46
A few weeks ago the Spring Statement was expected to be an uneventful macroeconomic update, but the war in Ukraine and spiralling cost of living meant chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak had to take action. This he did by cutting the national insurance contribution threshold by £3,000, cutting fuel duty by 5p a litre and pledging to cut the base rate if income tax to 19p in 2024. In this week's podcast, FTAdviser news editor Amy Austin talks to Claire Trott, divisional director of retirement and holistic planning at SJP, and Chris Etherington, private client partner at RSM, about what these announcements mean for advisers. They discuss the importance of communicating these changes and their implications to clients and the need to now maximise salary sacrifice and allowances. They also examine the fact the income tax rise will not be applied to dividend income and how this might mean those living off investment income in retirement are hit harder than buy-to-let landlords. 08 Apr 2022 | The future of platforms | 00:29:17
Platforms have reached another inflection point. Most, if not all, major advised platforms have upgraded their technology now, as the calls from advisers grow louder for better integration and more easily attainable routes to data. This means platforms, theoretically, have the tools they need now to truly start innovating for advisers. Meanwhile, a number of customised platform providers have emerged - all offering slightly different services - but the onus being generally the same, which is to encourage advice firms to invest more money and time in technology, and take on more risk, by owning their own platform. Hosted by Ruby Hinchliffe, Senior Reporter at FTAdviser, this podcast explores the benefits and drawbacks of both models. Guests include Andrew Back, chief commercial officer at Multrees, and David Tiller, commercial and propositions director at Quilter. 14 Apr 2022 | Investing at a time of volatility | 00:23:27

They discuss how sure we can be that assets will perform as they have in the past and that correlations that have been there in the past will be again and whether investors should view periods of heightened volatility as an opportunity or hunker down to preserve capital. They also discuss whether the turmoil has created any cheap asset classes. The FTAdviser Podcast is the weekly podcast for financial advisers, brought to you by FTAdviser. 22 Apr 2022 | How FCA network reforms could impact firms | 00:30:37
Reforming networks’ appointed representative models is high on the Financial Conduct Authority’s agenda this year, and it’s been a subject of much controversy since the publication of the watchdog’s consultation in March. According to the FCA, networks generate between 50 and 400 per cent more complaints and supervisory cases on behalf of themselves and their members than firms which are not networks. This led the watchdog to conclude more issues arise from principals and ARs than they do from directly authorised firms. Hence, it deemed a change to the AR regime - introduced back in 1986 - was needed. The FCA has said under new reforms, it would require networks to self-assess each member firm on an annual basis. Adviser trade body Pimfa has since said this will turn networks into “nothing more than extremely well-paid human resources consultants”. Ruby Hinchliffe, Senior Reporter at FTAdviser, spoke with Rory Gravatt, head of distribution and product strategy at Altus, and a former employee of Sesame Bankhall Group and Tenet, which operate AR models, to understand how networks will grapple with these changes. 29 Apr 2022 | How broken is the mortgage market? | 00:18:27
Britain's housing market is broken and the property bull market could soon turn into a bear, mortgage advisers told FTAdviser in March this year. Eye-watering increases in the cost of living, combined with every-high house prices and wage growth that is low by comparison to both inflation and the rate of house price increases in some parts of Britain, have led advisers to question how sustainable the housing market is at the moment. Speaking to FTAdviser on this podcast, three experts in the field of mortgage advice and property investment, discuss the reasons leading up to the current situation and postulate ways to help fix the market. Geoff Garrett, managing director of Henry Dannell, Samantha Bickford, mortgage & equity release specialist at Clarity Wealth Management, explain the need for some positive policy changes to improve the housing market for borrowers, renters and buy to let investors alike.
