All the information about the cases they research can be found on the band’s web site skynd-music.com, where you can find more information and links about all the subjects in the Case Files section. 08 Jul 2020 | Episode #222: Joyce Marie Fitzpatrick and Brian Shackelford – Producers/Directors of the Film The Color of Medicine: The Story of Homer G. Phillips Hospital About the First All-Black Hospital | 02:10:42
The guests for this episode are Joyce Marie Fitzpatrick and Brian Shackelford, the co-producers and co-directors of the documentary The Color of Medicine: The Story of Homer G. Phillips Hospital. This documentary sheds a light on the disparity between the medical treatment that the African-American community receives as opposed to others; something that we are really seeing these days with the COVID pandemic and the recent Black Lives Matter protests. The Color of Medicine not only tells the astonishing history of the first all-black hospital in St. Louis, but also recognizes and celebrates the achievements of the brave healthcare workers who were among the first black physicians and nurses to be medically trained in the United States. Using this documentary as a framework, this discussion with Joyce Marie Fitzpatrick and Brian Shackelford puts into account the world we are living in right now during the COVID pandemic and the recent Black Lives Matter protests. Many of the stories of the Homer G. Phillips Hospital really parallel things still happening today with Black people in America. This talk with Joyce and Brian is an excellent example of the type of discussions that need to happen between white and Black people, as they not only share things from the history of the hospital, but we share our own experiences and compare outcomes from the white and black perspective. For this episode, we are talking about the new graphic anthology Dead Beats 2, released by A Wave Blue World, an independent publisher of high-quality graphic novels, anthologies, and art books, focusing on socially conscious storytelling and providing a platform for a multitude of creative voices. Joining me for this discussion is A Wave Blue World co-founders Wendy and Tyler Chin-Tanner, who started the company over 15 years ago. Dead Beats 2: London Calling, is a continuation after a successful campaign for the first volume which also received high acclaim for both its art direction and storytelling. For those unaware, Dead Beats is a full-color anthology of music-themed horror comics centered around the curiosities for sale at one peculiar record store managed by the enigmatic Shoppe Keeper. Think Tales From the Crypt, but in a record store. For London Calling, we travel to the new Dead Beats location across the pond in London. The original editors, Joe Corallo (Oh S#!t, It’s Kim & Kim, Lost On Planet Earth) and Eric Palicki (All We Ever Wanted, Maybe Someday), are back for more Dead Beats featuring over twenty new comics stories and more than forty creators. Lisa Sterle (Long Lost, Witchblood) returns to provide the cover with our interstitial narrative illustrations by Val Halvorson (Finger Guns, The Sequels). During our discussion, Wendy and Tyler share how the idea of Dead Beats got started, the process of putting together an anthology, how they picked creators for the stories, along with the founding of A Wave Blue World, running this publishing company for over 15 years, how Wendy’s training in sociology informs her work with A Wave Blue World, and their favorite types of music. 17 Jun 2020 | Episode #221: J-Zone – Drummer, Author, Producer, and Former Rapper, New 7″ Single from The Du-Rites Available Now | 01:14:10
My guest this episode is drummer, producer, author, and former rapper, J-Zone. We talk about his new 7” single from his project The Du-Rites with Tom Tom Club guitarist Pablo Martin along with his transition from being a rapper to solely being a drummer/producer. A lot of the frustrations and lack of passion that J-Zone talks about with being a rapper is very interesting and something that I think a lot of people feel in their own creative spaces. Being someone that has been a jack-of-all-trades type person also in the past, his perspective on that and focusing more on specific trades really hit home with me, so this interview is a great listen for anyone in any artistic space. Go cop his new 7” single from The Du-Rites, “Jheri Curl” b/w “Du Vibrations”, on Bandcamp at thedurites.bandcamp.com. And remember, on June 19th, or known as Juneteenth, Bandcamp is donating 100% of their share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, a racial justice organization with a long history of effectively enacting change through litigation, advocacy, and public education. THE FRESH PICK OF THE WEEK:
This episodes pick is the debut album Stalker from Detroit’s own Ectomorph, out now via Interdimensional Transmissions. Ectomorph (now officially comprised of BMG & Erika) recorded this whole album as is, with only one or two takes in their own studio. There was no editing at all! They wanted to capture the mood of their live performances and Stalker is even more haunting than its name. Ectomorph made one of the most dark, yet lively albums of the year. While it embraces this murky sound, it’s one of the most unique electronic music releases I’ve heard in a while. This is what techno sounds like on Halloween in Detroit.
