On this episode of the Foxy Digitalis Podcast, I reflect a little on what Phill Niblock meant to me and the wider world of experimental sound (plus some love for IASOS!). He was one of the titans of the titans who leaves one hell of a legacy. Then, I invite Nina Dante and Sam Melancon on the show to talk about some intentions and resolutions for 2024.

01 Mar 2024It’s [redacted] Friday! I run down five albums that have come out recently that I’ve quite enjoyed, plus a new one on The Jewel Garden, and I should go to the planetarium more often.00:15:21

It’s BC Friday, hooray? No, it’s a good thing because it means you can shovel some bucks to artists and labels and entities you’d rather not get some of that cash won’t. So, that’s good! Otherwise, just rolling along and dreaming of going back to the planetarium. Boy am I tired.

On this episode of the Foxy Digitalis Podcast, Thomas Ragsdale swings by to talk about things he’s excited about right now. 09 Jan 2024Burial Beer's Tim Gormley - Songs of Our Lives #1602:01:12

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Burial Beer Company and Visuals Wine’s Tim Gormley on the show. We get deep into the origins of Burial and the ways music inspired them then and continues to as the brand grows into new spaces (they’ve just opened a music venue in Asheville called Eulogy). It was an interesting conversation about the ways music shapes so many of the things we do. Eventually we get into the goods, going on about breakdancing kits featuring Herbie Hancock, the unrelenting abrasiveness of Pharmakon, Paul Simon’s globe-trotting magic, cracking the Richard Skelton code, Joanna Newsom’s exceptionalness, and loads more!

12 Sep 2023The Seltzer Salon #14: Matthew Halsall00:34:49

For the newest edition of The Seltzer Salon, I talked to trumpeter, composer, and so much more, Matthew Halsall, about his new album, An Ever Changing View. It's a stunning album. I've been an admirer of Halsall's work for a while, but this album really swept me up in this lively, vivid world he creates with it. His compositions and trumpet playing are, of course, top notch, but the percussive elements of the album heighten its impact considerably. Add in the full package - custom fonts, cover tapestry, etc - it's an incredible listening experience. It was great to chat about it and hear him discuss those elements and how it came together to produce something so special.

24 Aug 2023The Seltzer Salon #10: Fadi Tabbal00:35:27

I've been pretty floored by a lot of the music coming out of Beirut over the last few years - and I realize I'm a bit late to the party here - but the city's scene has produced a handful of my absolute favorite albums in recent memory. One thing many of those records have in common is Fadi Tabbal and Tunefork Studios. I've been in touch with Tabbal for the last few years, and have written about a fair bit of work he's involved in, but it felt long overdue to have a conversation about his work and all that's happening around him. His recent album with Charbel Haber, Enfin La Nuit, was a perfect opportunity. 15 Dec 2023We’re all just trying to drag ourselves over the finish line of 2023 at this point, right? Inching ever closer with a wild collab between Thollem, Terry Riley, & Nels Cline as this week’s pick, plus a couple gems from Argentina & Mexico.00:12:13

On this episode of the Foxy Digitalis Podcast, my brain is completely and utterly fried and I am just counting down the seconds until things go a little quiet after next week (I thought about literally just counting backwards from however many seconds there are between when I’m writing this and next Friday at 5 PM, but spared y’all). This week’s pick is three heavyweights creating incredible soundscapes unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Plus a couple lovely bits I’ve been listening to from Mexico and Argentina. One more week!

07 Nov 2023Patrick Shiroishi - Songs of Our Lives #700:49:28

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Patrick Shiroishi on the show. It would take a novel to list all the incredible things Patrick is doing these days, but notably he has new album out this week, “I was too young to hear silence” on American Dreams. He’s also a member of The Armed, and has a dizzying array of collaborative projects on every single burner. We get into the wild backstory of Doraemon, the power of a wordless chorus, teenage screamo dreams, the levels of K-Dot, and our hopes of a new Joanna Newsom album in 2024.

14 Aug 2023Foxy Digitalis Daily - Aug. 14, 2023: Omar Ahmad “Inheritance”00:09:47
New week, new me (not really). Today’s pick is from Palestinian-American artist and musician, Omar Ahmad’s “Inheritance.” Also, I’ve released that I’m really not as drawn to harsh/noise/etc at all these days, and I’m not entirely sure why, but I think it’s interesting to think about. Whenever I need something to rattle my braincells, I generally turn to Hakuna Kulala or Nyege Nyege, but hit me with those HNW recs from the last year or so, the stuff that’ll change my mind (but also, get Elvin Brandhi & Lord Spikeheart’s “Drunk in Love” because it’s a fucken masterpiece). 12 Oct 2023The Seltzer Salon #17: Green-House00:32:45

When I first heard Green-House and read the description of Olive Ardizoni’s project back in early 2020 with Six Songs for Invisible Gardens, I felt an instant connection to the music and the ideas it conveyed. Since then, they have harvested growing sonic landscapes that, while adjacent to those early ideas, expand upon them to build a deeper conceptual framework. Green-House is now a duo with Ardizoni and Michael Flanagan, and on their new album, A Host for All Kinds of Life, the sharpest aural fields emerge. Ardizoni and Flanagan create inviting soundscapes that may have a gentle surface sheen, but inside are infinite folds, exploring the radical nature of joy and pleasure in an ever-darkening world. I was thrilled to talk to Ardizoni about these ideas and the gilded edges this music carves.

17 Nov 2023Happy Andre 3000 flute album day to all who celebrate. Hey! Look! It’s Markus Floats in conversation, TWO albums of the week (Myra Melford & Gregg Kowalsky), plus all hail a foggy daybreak.00:41:54

On this episode of the Foxy Digitalis Podcast, I don’t really talk about the new Andre 3000 album, but I know a lot of people are excited about (myself included!), so maybe next time. The morning before I recorded this, I woke up early, got lost in the fog, and ended up writing a new Charlatan song around daybreak - and it was so, so nice. Go over to the Patreon to give it a listen!

But, TWO - count’ em TWO - albums of the week since the podcast will be off next week (holiday vibes), and it’s my show so I can do whatever I want. Both are gems, and I listened to them back-to-back yesterday (Melford then Kowalsky) and it REALLY worked. Highly recommend that.

Then, jump to about 15 minutes if you want to get straight to my conversation with Markus Floats about his latest album, “Fourth Album.”

Gregg Kowalsky “Eso Es”

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Helado Negro on the show. After talking a little about his process and the story of Lupe Lopez, he takes us on quite the journey (including me reacting to one of his off-the-cuff picks live - ha!). We get into the all-time greatness of Teddy Pendergrass, Piero’s timeless moments, Bonnie Raitt’s calypso side, the utter seduction of Maria Marquez’s “Loveroom,” Caliban bringing it, the understated magic of Luiz Bonfa, being moved to tears by Xenia Rubinos, and so much more!

We ramble about how much the Ghostbuster theme bangs, the art of being loud, what it is about Trent Reznor that doesn’t quite work for us, how there’s nobody else like Joanna Newsom, one of the best voices we’ve ever heard, the other side of James Brown, the greatest indie rock ever, and so much more!

Once we get into the songs, the laughs start early and never stop as we talk about the Duke of Dukedom himself, Ivor Cutler’s excellent use of fart noises, how Acetone was hiding in plain sight, the genius and divisiveness of Bobby Conn, how Daniel Romano avoided the Sub Pop curse, finally unlocking Arthur Russell, Souled American being the absolute greatest, and so much more!

20 Jun 2023The Seltzer Salon #3: Danny Paul Grody00:33:59

I don't have enough superlatives for Danny Paul Grody, but he is such a kind and generous person that even a short conversation with him will leave you feeling better about the world. His latest album, Arc of Day, captures that spirit. It plots a sonic pathway through darkness and isolation to the other side, where light still glows. Brad and Danny talk in-depth about the album and its origins, the incredible collaborators who helped bring it to life, and a little Furniture Music for good measure. 01 Dec 2023Gregg Kowalsky stops by to talk about hydrophones and synthesizers and his latest album, “Eso Es,” and I ramble on about how obsessed I am with this post-dukes album from Udmurtia. Oh, and it’s Bandcamp Friday - perhaps the last one?!00:53:22

On this episode of the Foxy Digitalis Podcast, Gregg Kowalsky swings by to talk about his latest album, Eso Es, and how it ended up being something in a different sound world. It’s such a great album, and it was great to catch up. Plus, the album of the week utterly blew my mind and just came out of nowhere (well not true, it’s from Udmurtia). post-dukes are the realest deal. There’s been some exciting new releases announced recently, too, plus one from yours truly - The North Sea’s “Somewhere Between Something & Nothing.” Let’s go!

After chatting about the record for a bit, we get into the all-encompassing everything of Bo Diddley, the new Beatlemania, a magic combination of a relentless rhythm + sweet melody, discovering electronic music, Coltrane at his most romantic, the overwhelming appeal of “Strawberry Fields Forever,” Jon Hassell’s influence, and so much more!

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Felicia Chen aka Dis Fig on the show. There are collaborations that just make sense, and one listen to Dis Fig & The Body’s “Orchards of a Futile Heaven” screams that these two projets are meant to collide. After talking about how that happened, we blast off talking about how early is too early for a memory of Naughty by Nature, the desolation Sufjan Stevens can bring, how Earth is also sexy… maybe, earnestness going too far, Senyawa’s magic, getting hyped with Nero, Portishead’s greatness, and loads more!

05 Oct 2023The Seltzer Salon #16: Vinny Golia00:47:41

After a week off (to put all the focus on Songs of Our Lives), The Seltzer Salon returns with a real heavy hitter. Vinny Golia is an all-time great. A composer, multi-instrumentalist, big thinker, teacher, and so much more, all of these facets show up in his project, Even to This Day. The second Movement, Syncretism: For The Draw, is out now and stretches across nearly 12 hours and 110 tracks. Collaborators include Susan Alcorn, Chas Smith, Nels Cline, Alkis Nicholadis, and so many more. It's a sprawing, magnificent document. Golia talks about contributing to the positive vibrations of the universe, a notion that resonates with me, and it's a jumping off point for this conversation (along with so many other things)

.Even to This Day, Movement Two: Syncretism, For The Draw

The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. Each episode features a musician, artist, writer, or anyone, really, focusing on a single project or idea. I know we all have limited time each day, so I wanted to do something a little smaller scale with just as much impact, so episodes will be 25-45 minutes in length. 20 Feb 2024The Body's Lee Buford - Songs of Our Lives #2201:02:41

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite The Body’s Lee Buford on the show. First, we get the other perspective on Dis Fig & The Body’s “Orchards of a Futile Heaven.” This record just absolutely rips. Then, things go off with the Jason Molina’s crushing music, Neutral Milk Hotel’s being too ubiquitous, music that’s so vapid it rocks, Peter Gabriel’s wild romantic lines, the brutality and awesomeness of “Cop Killer,” Willie Nelson bringing a sadness to someone else’s song that is devastating, the undeniable nature of Dead Prez, our mutual Roman Empire, and more!

Listen to all of Lee’s picks HERE

16 Feb 2024Meg Mulhearn & I chat about the solstice and music pairing with wine, but I ran out mental capacity so there’s no Album of the Week but if there was it’d be Afrikan Sciences latest (will do it up proper next week!)00:41:45

On this episode of the Foxy Digitalis Podcast, I talk to Meg Mulhearn about her latest album, “Let It Burn Through the Night” on Ceremony of Seasons. We get into the transformational magic of the winter solstice, multi-sensory listening sessions, and a lot more. And there’s technically not an album of the week this week. It was going to be Afrikan Sciences’s “.5x100Rf(est.1974)” (which is so, so good) and it’ll be a proper pick next week. Promise!

16 Jan 2024Ilyas Ahmed - Songs of Our Lives #1701:11:52

For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Ilyas Ahmed on the show. After reminiscing a bit about the 2007 Digitalis music fest, Bottled Smoke, we talked about both incredible albums Ilyas released in 2023 - his solo joint, “A Dream of Another,” and Grails’ “Anches En Maat.” We had a blast getting into the underrated shredding of Steve Stevens, Velvet Underground’s ability for tender destruction, where you go after making one of the all-time records as your debut, how Bono ruins some great songs, Guy Picciotto as an underappreciated lyricist, Scott Walker being Scott Walker, Q Lazzarus’s genius and tragedy, feeling good with Donna Summer, and loads more!

Listen to all of Ilyas’s picks HERE

01 Sep 2023The Seltzer Salon #12: Bob Bellerue00:30:29

It's no surprise that I am drawn to fellow lifers, and the great Bob Bellerue certainly fits that bill. This was the first time the two of us actually sat down and talked, but having occupied similar and adjacent worlds for the better part of two decades, it was a quick connection. In addition to continuing the great Ende Tymes festival, Bellerue's solo music practice has been expanding and evolving along with his collaborative work. We get into two recent projects - an album with Francisco Meirino, and his new duo, Eternities, with Katie Porter. Lifers for life! Bob Bellerue & Francisco Meirino "Bain d'Arsenic" https://flagdayrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/bain-darsenic Eternities "Realness" https://harmonicoozerecords.bandcamp.com/album/realness The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. Each episode features a musician, artist, writer, or anyone, really, focusing on a single project or idea. I know we all have limited time each day, so I wanted to do something a little smaller scale with just as much impact, so episodes will be 25-45 minutes in length. 27 Jun 2023The Seltzer Salon #4: Ned Milligan00:41:11

I've been a great admirer of Ned Milligan's work both up close and from afar. His latest, Considerable, is the perfect opportunity to finally have a conversation about his approach to creating these inviting, organic sound worlds. His use of wind chimes, especially, always grabs me on such a core level. Considerable is an apt title for this latest album as Milligan's work is always considered and restrained, creating just the right amount of resonance and sonic space to live within. Considerable is out now on vinyl, CD, and digital formats via laaps. https://laaps-records.com/album/considerable https://florabellerecords.com/ The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis.
