14 Jun 2024These Billionaire VCs Are The World's Most Powerful Investors: Inside The Forbes Midas List00:10:38

The 2024 Midas List features 13 women investors, matching 2021’s record number. They include No. 99 Annabelle Yu Long, a China-based newcomer at BAI Capital, and No. 86 Annie Lamont, Connecticut’s First Lady and cofounder of Oak HC/FT, appearing for the fifth time, but her first in nine years.

A data-driven ranking, the Midas List is produced annually from a combination of public data sources and the submissions of hundreds of investment partners across dozens of firms. To qualify, investors are ranked by portfolio companies that have gone public or been acquired for at least $200 million in the past five years, or that have at least doubled their private valuation to $400 million or more over the same period. Forbes and TrueBridge allow firms to share credit for a deal between up to two investors, and put a premium on liquid exits over unrealized returns. Early stage investors who deliver large multiples on money invested, and later-stage investors who return large sums of cash, can both make the list. Top Midas investors typically achieve both, across a dozen or more eligible investments.

04 May 2024VC Renata Quintini Reveals Her Firm’s New Fund And Why She Doesn’t Aspire To $1 Billion In AUM00:29:36

In 2023, female-owned venture capital firms received just 3% of the total $107 billion raised across venture firms worldwide, up from 2% in 2022. It is within this environment that Renata Quintini, cofounder and managing director of Renegade Partners, is announcing the close of a fresh $128 million in dry powder. The close of Fund II brings her firm’s total assets under management to $228 million, a size Quintini believes is a “Goldilocks” fit for the work she and cofounder Roseanne Wincek want to do.

“If you’re managing a billion dollars, the math works against you,” she said during a sitdown interview at the Forbes studio. “At our fund size, we can write checks for $10 million, or in some cases have single digit percentage ownership that makes sense for our fund math… I’d much rather own a bite of a watermelon than the whole grape. Let’s optimize for opportunities to say yes to great founders.” Quintini also dished on what aspiring founders—of companies and venture firms alike—need to know about operating in 2024.

23 Dec 2023From Iga Swiatek To Eileen Gu: Here Are The Highest-Paid Female Athletes of 202300:08:19

Iga Świątek, Eileen Gu and Coco Gauff are the top earners for the past 12 months as tennis players continue to dominate the annual pay ranking. With Serena Williams retired and Naomi Osaka sidelined for the year as she recovered from injuries and then childbirth, the list of the world’s highest-paid female athletes has a new No. 1: 22-year-old Polish tennis star Iga Świątek, who made an estimated $23.9 million in 2023 (before taxes and agents’ fees). Since Forbes introduced the ranking in 2008, Maria Sharapova is the only other woman to have claimed the crown, reigning for eight straight years until Williams took over in 2016.

Świątek’s monster year included the women’s singles title at the French Open, and four new endorsement deals, but it’s also no coincidence that she—like Osaka, Williams and Sharapova before her—plays tennis. Twelve of the world’s 20 highest-paid female athletes, and nine of the top 10, come from the sport, which offers sizable prize money and ample marketing opportunities for female athletes.

Golf and soccer each have two athletes represented in this year’s top 20, with badminton, basketball, gymnastics and freestyle skiing rounding out the list with one athlete apiece.

Combined, the 20 top-earning women made an estimated $226 million in 2023. That is a 13% drop from 2022’s $258 million, but the decline can be attributed almost entirely to the loss of Williams (who hauled in $41.3 million on last year’s list) and Osaka’s tumble to $15 million (from $51.1 million in 2022) amid her long layoff.

Forbes SportsMoney Reporter Justin Birnbaum, joins 'Forbes Talks' to list the highest paid female athletes.

22 Nov 2023Cruise Robotaxis Forced To Cease Operations Nationwide—Here’s How This Will Impact The Industry00:12:41

Cyrus Farivar, a senior writer for Forbes, joins ‘Forbes Talks’ to discuss Cruise robotaxis halting operations nationwide. The stunning announcement comes just two days after California regulators revoked the company’s permit statewide, finding that Cruise’s vehicles are “not safe for the public’s operation” and that the cars pose “an unreasonable risk to the public.”

After ceasing operations in California on Tuesday, Cruise continued in Phoenix, Arizona, and in Austin and Houston, two of Texas’ largest cities. However, the entire robotaxi fleet nationwide has now been grounded.

In its brief thread, Cruise said that the company needed to “take steps to rebuild public trust…even if it means doing things that are uncomfortable or difficult.”

Earlier this month, at its peak, Cruise had a fleet of 400 robotaxis nationwide.

22 Dec 2023How To Choose A College That Will Pay You Back00:13:35

As the cost of college continues to rise, public discourse around higher education has sparked debate about whether the investment is worth it. Considering that college graduates' salaries have been outpaced by the costs of a degree, it's no wonder that consumer confidence has waned. Any other economic exchange would warrant such scrutiny, so it's essential that we view college in market terms, not just as a social chevron.

But what is the economic exchange between higher ed and would-be students? Prior generations were indoctrinated with the belief that a college degree promised a "good job" and good-standing status in society. However, the democratization of technology has reduced barriers to entry and created new opportunities for budding entrepreneurs and savvy creators to subvert these traditional paths and still obtain similar benefits that would typically come with having a degree. Some even argue that these outcomes are more likely to be achieved without the debt that so many students must accrue to get the degree and realize its potential benefit.

25 Sep 2024Inside BalletX: The Company Revolutionizing The Business Of Dance | Forbes00:24:25

Christine Cox, Artistic and Executive Director of BalletX, has led the company to the forefront of contemporary ballet since its founding in 2005. This season, the company brings three New York premieres to The Joyce Theater, featuring bold works by Takehiro Ueyama, Jodie Gates, and Loughlan Prior.

Through Cox's innovation in the contemporary ballet space, BalletX has become a leader in pushing the boundaries of what the art form and dancers are capable of by producing 130 ballets by over 70 choreographers in under 20 years. That is an average of six per year, a feat few companies can match. Looking back at it now, that stat seems unthinkable when the modest company was established in 2005. But over the years BalletX has grown sustainably as an institution growing the ensemble of dancers from 10 to 16, providing annual salaries to dancers and becoming a fundraising powerhouse, having received a $7.4 million transformational gift this year which will allow the company to grow into a global force.

18 Dec 2023Beyoncé's New Worth Hits $800 Million00:12:54

“It should cost a billion to look this good,” Beyoncé sings on “Pure/Honey” from her 2022 album, Renaissance. Given the stellar year the 42-year-old entertainer has had, money doesn’t appear to be a problem—she is now on a glidepath to becoming a billionaire, with a net worth of $800 million, Forbes estimates.

In June, Beyoncé ranked No. 48 on Forbes’ annual list of the richest self-made women in America, with a net worth of $540 million. The dramatic boost to her fortune can be attributed to her substantial 2023 earnings—she banked an estimated $100 million (post-tax) from the Renaissance World Tour—as well as an adjustment to Forbes’ estimate of her music catalog and her art collection. Sources tell Forbes the singer’s catalog is now worth some $300 million. The remainder of her net worth is made up of the personal assets she shares with her billionaire husband, Jay-Z, as well as her business holdings through Parkwood Entertainment, which she founded in 2010. (Representatives for Beyoncé did not respond to Forbes’ request for comment.)

One of the major drivers to the increase to Beyoncé’s net worth was her blockbuster Renaissance tour, which ran from May to October and spanned 39 cities in 17 countries. Renaissance brought in more than $579 million in revenue, making it one of the top 10 highest-grossing tours in history, according to Billboard.

“She’s one of the music gods,” IAG chairman Dennis Arfa, who represents acts including Billy Joel and Metallica, tells Forbes. “The business she does, and the amount of people that she draws, that she can do a movie on her own. She can do things most can’t.”

30 Nov 2023WhatsApp Billionaire Joins The Secretive $10 Billion Startup Company: Newlands00:08:26

In the early months of the pandemic, Michael Abramson returned home to Texas to plot his next career move. A former partner at storied venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, he'd kept a low public profile despite investments in flashy startups like beauty retailer Glossier and delivery app Rappi. Hoping to maintain that quiet approach in his next endeavor, he pinged a friend with a similar penchant for privacy, and billions of dollars to invest: WhatsApp billionaire Jan Koum.

Today, with Koum’s support, Abramson quietly leads Newlands, a firm that has rapidly grown into one of the largest new funds in tech. Abramson and Koum haven’t spoken publicly about Newlands, and the firm does not appear in recent funding announcements. Its corporate website is little more than a shell. But regulatory filings reveal a firm that holds nearly $10 billion in public equities, mostly tech stocks, and is beginning to make investments in the early-stage startup ecosystem.

Forbes Senior Editor, Alex Conrad joins 'Forbes Talks' with Diane Brady to discuss the mystery of Newlands' history and big players.

25 Sep 2024Blanca’s Revival: The Hidden 12-Seat Restaurant Reimagining Fine Dining | Forbes00:30:58

After her celebrated run at Mena in Tribeca, Chef Victoria Blamey has returned to New York’s culinary scene, taking the helm at Blanca in Brooklyn—a restaurant revered for its daring tasting menu and intimate 12-seat setting. With support from Carlo Mirarchi, Blanca’s original founder, Blamey brings her inventive, globe-trotting techniques and Chilean heritage to a new chapter at the once Michelin-starred gem.

Set behind Bushwick’s famed Roberta’s, Blanca offers an immersive, nearly three-hour culinary journey that pushes the boundaries of fine dining. Each course showcases Blamey’s meticulous attention to detail. The menu doesn’t reveal how much work each course entails; that the fermentation process takes days; that before the end of an evening’s service Blamey is preparing dough which needs 19 hours to process; that the spinach leaves take hours to press and wrap; there are shells to shuck; the Donabe rice pot has to be continuously stirred; and a wood oven outside needs regular attention. Beyond the kitchen, Blanca’s experience is enhanced by an extensive natural wine list and music as eclectic as the food.

Executive Chef Victoria Blamey and Chef and Co-owner Carlo Mirarchi sit down with Forbes editor Maggie McGrath to discuss Blanca’s revival, their creative process, and what’s next for the iconic restaurant.

27 Apr 2024Inside A $46 Million Renewable Energy Swindle00:15:40

Rhino Onward International, or ROI as it called itself, launched in 2022 with some big promises. The renewables development firm claimed that its “proprietary process and technology” put it in position “to assume the leading role in Green Hydrogen production.” The company said it was building a green hydrogen plant in Arizona that would be worth about $530 million within 5 years, according to marketing materials it shared with investors.

ROI raised $31 million from over 200 investors but apparently only invested $200,000 in the business; the firm’s promoters Paul Croft and J.D. Frost diverted the rest of the investors’ money to themselves and entities they control, according to an investor lawsuit filed in Illinois last month, which cited bank records obtained through subpoenas. Beginning in 2021 until last year, Croft, a 42-year-old entrepreneur living in Chicago, and Frost, a 40-year-old accountant based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, raised approximately $46 million from a series of phony renewables investment schemes, which the pair used to live extravagantly, pay employees at their tax advisory business, pay down short-term loans and even lend money to embattled professional hockey player Robin Lehner, according to allegations in lawsuits, bankruptcy filings, former investors and ex-employees of Croft’s and Frost’s businesses who spoke with Forbes on the record, and others with knowledge of the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to speak about sensitive information.
