01 Apr 2024 | Gettysburg | 01:46:11
Brendan's mentor and dear personal friend Ronny Maxwell makes a big blue-gray splash in 1993's Gettysburg: the story of the pivotal American Civil War battle and the various monologues and wistful bittersweet remembrances that changed a nation. Ronny gives the war a grandeur steeped in myth and Lost Cause attitudes (though nowhere near its embarrassing sequel Gods and Generals) and some of the most careless beard-work in recent memory. Jason monologues, Brendan listens and in the end, they both die valiantly in the service of different dreams (Editor's Note: they do not die).

The war is over as Germany surrenders to the Allies but there is much uncertainty. As soldiers return home, the government is in chaos, unrest is in the streets and the only thing that helps is some out-of-place comedy. Good luck, listener.

How does this movie manage to have such "big" acting that works so well on film? Did Brendan go too 'tiny film glasses' with his war metaphor theory? It's time for some Maritime shine as the guys break down the classic 1970 rags-to-rags (?) story about two Nova Scotians traveling to Toronto for the promise of better work - Goin' Down the Road. How authentically Maritime is this movie? Did director Donald Shebib use authentic transients and war veterans for key scenes? Does Jayne Eastwood make a seemingly thankless role worth something just based on her facial reactions alone? Does the movie have an anti-Capitalist stance? Plus: IF ANYONE HAS THE SEQUEL, PLEASE TELL US.

Before they move back to the realm of British, Brendan and Jason decide to talk about a "Canuck Puck," a Canadian film pick from each of them that they have never seen before... and it's Brendan's turn first - Porky's. Yes, it's the Floridian Canadian classic from director Bob Clark that answers the question "can something that ages this horribly still be funny?" with... well, you'll have to listen to find out. Kim Cattrall's committed howling performance, super horny "teenagers," washroom peepholes, clumsy attempts at addressing racism in the 50s - it's all here, baby!

07 Apr 2025 | Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk | 01:16:06
And now it's time for something completely similar, folks. AKA we did another Ang Lee movie that one time. Anyhoo, this week the fellers discuss Ang Lee's wartime satire (?) Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. Is this a case of a source material's tone being lost in the adaptation? Why is Steve Martin in this movie? How does Vin Diesel go up against expectations and give the best performance in this movie (not a knock, it's a good one)?! Filming at 120 frames per second - why? Did we need the romance that maybe should've been more obviously satirical instead of a seemingly straight-forward subplot? All this and more in this week's episode!
