19 Dec 2024Week 16 deep dives: Penix' first start, Steelers minus Pickens, dysfunctional Jets01:15:35

In this week’s action-packed episode of Football 301, hosts Nate Tice and Charles McDonald deep dive into the best matchups of Week 16, including a full breakdown of the weekend’s slop watch games and heavyweight matchups. First, Tice and McDonald open with a report on the New York Jets, whose dysfunction continues to spiral, especially with owner Woody Johnson reportedly nixing a trade for Jerry Jeudy because of his Madden ratings. The conversation takes a turn as C Mac reflects on the bizarre, unhinged decisions Johnson has been making for years and how the team’s dysfunction has only worsened over time.

From there, the guys shift to some of Week 16's most intriguing games, including the New York Giants at Atlanta Falcons on slop watch, where Charles questions why Kirk Cousins wasn’t benched sooner, and Tice outlines what to watch for with Michael Penix Jr. in his first NFL start. Nate also mentions a New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills matchup that promises an intriguing duel between rookie QB Drake Maye and Josh Allen before the duo turn their attention to the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens automatic hoss fight. With George Pickens out, the Steelers' offense looks in peril – will they be able to keep up with Lamar Jackson and the Ravens’ stout run defense? The Washington Commanders are taking on the Philadelphia Eagles, where they will look to improve upon their woes from the last matchup.

Finally, McDonald and Tice wrap up with their analysis of Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs, where Patrick Mahomes' ankle injury could spell trouble for KC, and a Minnesota Vikings vs. Seattle Seahawks clash that promises explosiveness as both teams deal with key injuries. Finally, Nate and Charles wrap up with two mailbag questions, including thoughts on Jaxon Dart as a potential NFL prospect.

Nate and Charles start with the Detroit Lions taking on the Houston Texans on Sunday night, as it's hard to see how Houston can stop the Lions from dominating both sides of the ball, but Nate points out that having Joe Mixon on the field makes a big difference. Next, Nate and Charles give one thing to watch for every Week 10 matchup as they get into the one interesting matchup in the Munich game, a big rookie quarterback battle, the Pope sending encouraging words to the New Orleans Saints, how Bo Nix can beat the Spagnuolo defense, Jayden Daniels vs. Mike Tomlin, how Aaron Rodgers will attack the Arizona defense and much more.

26 Nov 2024Thanksgiving Special! Eagles-Ravens, Bears-Lions, Dolphins in the snow & more Week 13 matchups01:20:32

In this Thanksgiving special episode, Nate Tice and Charles McDonald dive into a packed Week 13 slate with plenty of playoff implications. From explosive performances to key matchups, they break down the top games of the week, including the Philadelphia Eagles’ high-flying offense, the Baltimore Ravens’ blue-chip coaching and a Thanksgiving Day showdown between the Chicago Bears & Detroit Lions, plus a potential snow game for the Miami Dolphins in Green Bay.

Charles gives his thoughts on the Eagles’ thrilling win over the Los Angeles Rams, pointing out that while Philly’s offense wasn’t overly efficient, their ability to generate explosive plays was the difference. Meanwhile, the Ravens continue to prove their playoff contender status, with the two hosts highlighting Derrick Henry’s second-half dominance in a win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Thanksgiving games are on the agenda as well, with a look at the Bears facing the Lions. Can Chicago’s offense find consistency after a rare strong outing, or will the Lions’ top-tier defense stifle them? They also break down the Dolphins in the snow against the Green Bay Packers, discussing Miami’s offensive firepower, the cold-weather challenge and how the Packers’ defense could take advantage of the Dolphins’ struggles with the run game. The duo also cover the Chargers taking on the Atlanta Falcons, who are coming off a brutal loss against Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos.

Other Week 13 matchups include a deep dive into the Arizona Cardinals vs. the Minnesota Vikings, with Nate highlighting Minnesota’s defense against pulling blockers and Arizona's surprisingly good defense. Meanwhile, Charles and Nate give their take on Eagles vs. Ravens, with the matchup between Lamar Jackson and the Eagles' defense shaping up to be the hoss fight of the week.

Finally, the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills are discussed, with Charles hopeful that Brock Purdy will play and lead San Francisco back to form, though both Charles and Nate agree that the Bills’ defensive speed and offensive depth will likely be too much for the 49ers to handle.

31 Dec 2024New Year's resolutions for NFL teams: Lions, 49ers, Vikings, Patriots & more01:13:17

In this episode of Football 301, Nate Tice and Matt Harmon are ringing in the New Year with their resolutions for NFL teams as the playoff race heats up. Matt's resolutions focus on teams in the playoffs, while Nate takes aim at franchises that are in need of some serious soul-searching.

First, the guys tackle the red-hot Minnesota Vikings, who are gearing up for a crucial Sunday night game. Matt admits to regretting his past doubts about Sam Darnold, while Nate discusses how Darnold’s recent performances are reshaping the team’s future. From there, they turn their attention to the New England Patriots, discussing the lack of supporting talent around rookie QB Drake Maye and the need for a drastic roster overhaul. They also dive into the Detroit Lions’ identity, where Coach Dan Campbell's aggressive philosophy is clearly paying off.

Next, they touch on the Chicago Bears, who have a lot of work to do, particularly in finding a long-term solution at center to help their young QB Caleb Williams. The conversation shifts to teams in need of renovation or a redefined sense of direction. The Los Angeles Rams need a refresh on offense with more speed and explosiveness, while the Indianapolis Colts seem stuck in the muck, lacking defensive leadership. On the flip side, Matt and Nate give props to the Houston Texans for their surprising playoff berth but caution that they may have overestimated their readiness for a deep run. Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers might need to trim the fat in their offense, and the Las Vegas Raiders must decide whether to commit to a long-term plan or continue with their half-measure approach. The episode wraps up with a look at the San Francisco 49ers, who need to eat their vegetables.

(2:15) - Minnesota Vikings

(11:05) - New England Patriots

(19:40) - Detroit Lions

10 Feb 2025Super Bowl LIX recap & analysis with Nate Tice & Matt Harmon01:00:32

In this special episode of Football 301, Nate Tice and Matt Harmon join you live to break down the Philadelphia Eagles' dominant Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Nate and Matt discuss what went wrong for Kansas City and what made Philadelphia’s roster construction and game plan so effective. The guys break down every key moment, from the Chiefs’ offensive line woes to the Eagles' defensive line getting after Patrick Mahomes all game long.

While the Chiefs couldn’t seem to get anything going on offense, with Rashee Rice missing and Travis Kelce struggling in both receiving and blocking, Matt and Nate pinpoint what went wrong. The Chiefs were constantly pressured by the Eagles' four-man rush, and even though the Chiefs' defense hung in there, giving up 40 points was too much to overcome. Nate explains the missed opportunities, like DeAndre Hopkins’ crucial drop and what the Chiefs will need to address in the offseason—like bolstering their offensive line and adding more talent to their receiver corps. For the first time in years, the future looks shaky for Kansas City.

But this episode isn't just about the Chiefs' struggles; the Eagles also deserve plenty of credit. From Nick Sirianni’s leadership to Howie Roseman’s masterful roster construction, Matt and Nate give praise to the Eagles for building a team that was built to win big. Whether it's Josh Sweat dominating up front or Cooper DeJean stepping up in big moments, the Eagles' commitment to their unique team-building strategy paid off. Looking ahead, Matt and Nate discuss the possibility of a Philadelphia Super Bowl repeat with Jalen Hurts leading the charge and Howie’s continued emphasis on bold strategic moves. Discussion around Drake's unfortunate Super Bowl night and other thoughts on Kendrick Lamar's halftime show wrap things up.

(1:20) - Eagles win the Super Bowl!

(19:40) - What went wrong for Kansas City

(33:00) - Breaking down the Eagles' dominance

(50:45) - Kendrick halftime show thoughts

23 Dec 2024Week 16 fifth quarter: Pickett doesn't scare Commanders & Justin Jefferson is too elite to be stopped00:37:16

Week 16's biggest fireworks were in the NFC East, where the Philadelphia Eagles' 10-game win streak was put to a halt by Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders. The Eagles have looked unstoppable since early October, but a Jalen Hurts concussion sent the team scrambling to find an offensive identity under backup QB Kenny Pickett. Despite five turnovers, the Daniels-led Commanders came back late to get a statement December win against a division rival.

Nate Tice and Charles McDonald close the book on Week 16 with this Sunday's edition of the fifth quarter: the five games that intrigued them the most. In addition to the Commanders-Eagles tilt, the guys discuss the Minnesota Vikings staying atop the NFC leaderboards with a win in Seattle, Michael Penix's first start with a solid 34-7 win for the Atlanta Falcons over the New York Giants and close out with the two Saturday games: the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs taking home big conference wins with two games left in the regular season.

Closing out the show, the guys hand their game balls out to a pair of offensive masterpiece performers in Minnesota's Justin Jefferson and the Colts' Jonathan Taylor.

24 Oct 2024Week 8 lookahead: one thing to watch in EVERY game, Bills & Bears deep dive01:05:21

Nate Tice is joined by Charles McDonald to preview the Week 8 slate of NFL games, highlighting the two biggest matchups and giving out one thing to watch for the rest of the particularly sloppy Sunday slate. Nate and Charles start with the Buffalo Bills heading to Seattle, as they break down how the Bills run game can take off in this game and the one interesting thing that the Seattle Seahawks offense and the Bills defense have in common.

Next up is the Chicago Bears taking on the Washington Commanders (who may be without Jayden Daniels), and the duo discuss what's lead to Caleb Williams figuring it out so fast and whether or not the Commanders run game can keep rolling against a nasty Bears defense.

The hosts move on to the rest of the Sunday slate and give one thing to watch in each game, leading to conversations on Jim Harbaugh's run game, Tua Tagovailoa, why the Tennessee Titans defense is actually really good, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers creamsicle uniforms and much more before finishing off the show with a mailbag question on the best role players in the NFL.

06 Jan 2025Week 18 fifth quarter: Lions pummel Vikings to take NFC, Bucs secure NFC South & Patriots fire Jerod Mayo00:54:34

The 2024 NFL regular season is finally in the books and the blockbuster Sunday night finale between the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings was a bit more lopsided than anticipated. Jared Goff and the Lions secured an overwhelming 31-9 victory in which Jahmyr Gibbs scored 4 touchdowns and the Vikings offense never got comfortable.

Nate Tice and Charles McDonald break down the biggest storylines from the end of Week 18, leading off with Detroit securing both the NFC North crown and home field advantage through the playoffs. Next, they talk about the Denver Broncos blowing out the Kansas City Chiefs backups in order to punch their ticket into the AFC playoffs and how this came at the expense of the Cincinnati Bengals, who beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday.

In the latter half of the show, the guys check in on the NFC South, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured another division title and the Atlanta Falcons blowing a game in overtime to the Carolina Panthers.

In a surprisingly swift bit of news, the New England Patriots fired head coach Jerod Mayo after just a single season after he had reportedly been the head coach in waiting for a number of years. Charles and Nate criticize the Patriots ownership and front office with the decision making and wonder if Mike Vrabel or Ben Johnson could be the next HC in Foxboro.

Closing out the show, the run through some quick topics including the Tennessee Titans securing the top pick in this April's NFL draft, Trey Lance getting the start in Dallas over Cooper Rush and Tanner McKee looking solid in relief of Jalen Hurts in a Philadelphia Eagles win over the Giants.

11 Dec 2024Rookie check-in: Caleb Williams, Bo Nix, Brock Bowers, Malik Nabers & more01:32:33

In this episode of Football 301, Nate Tice and Matt Harmon take a deep dive into the 2024 NFL rookie class, breaking down the highs, lows, and everything in between. From quarterbacks like Caleb Williams, whose start with the Chicago Bears has been filled with ups and downs, to offensive lineman like Joe Alt, the guys evaluate how these rookies are performing and what we can expect moving forward.

Nate and Matt analyze Caleb Williams’ struggles with pressure and sacks in Chicago, acknowledging that the Bears’ disastrous season makes it hard to fully evaluate him. Meanwhile, Jayden Daniels has been a revelation for the Washington Commanders, impressing with his football IQ and his blossoming connection with Terry McLaurin. Nate and Matt also dive into the impressive start from Drake Maye, despite a lack of talent around him, and Bo Nix, who’s been aggressive with the deep ball but still has room to improve his pocket presence.

Despite some growing pains, they remain cautiously optimistic about the potential of late-round guys like Xavier Worthy and some slot receivers who haven’t quite hit their stride yet.

Additionally, the guys highlight standout rookies at tight end, including Brock Bowers, who’s already making waves in the Las Vegas Raiders’ offense, and the impressive rookie offensive linemen, including JC Latham and Zach Frazier, who are living up to their first-round billing. The duo finish up with some rapid fire shoutouts on the defensive side of the ball.

27 Dec 2024Week 17 deep dives & Xmas games recap: Burrow vs. Broncos D, Penix vs. Daniels, Packers-Vikings01:16:26

As we enter the penultimate week of the NFL season, Nate Tice and Charles McDonald are back to break down all the action from a festive—but somewhat underwhelming—set of Christmas games before deep diving on the most interesting matchups to look forward to this weekend. The duo kicks things off by revisiting the Kansas City Chiefs' dominant win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, where despite some strong production value, the game got blown open as the Chiefs appeared to be entering postseason mode. The show then pivots to a tough reality check for the Houston Texans, who were completely outclassed by the Baltimore Ravens. While CJ Stroud did his best, the Texans’ glaring weakness in the trenches is hard to ignore, and Nate has some strong thoughts on their offensive line struggles.

Next, Nate and Charles deep dive on the Denver Broncos @ Cincinnati Bengals matchup—a defensive hoss fight that features some of the league's top talent, including Ja'Marr Chase and Patrick Surtain II, and preview an intriguing Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings game where defensive adjustments will likely determine the outcome.

As the episode rounds out, the guys tackle a high-stakes game for the Atlanta Falcons, who need a win against the Washington Commanders to keep their playoff hopes alive, and a double slop watch featuring the Dallas Cowboys @ Philadelphia Eagles and the Carolina Panthers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The duo wrap up with a mailbag question, as Nate and Charles dissect the complexities of motion in the NFL and why some teams choose not to use it very often.

09 Dec 2024Week 14 fifth quarter: Stafford, Allen & Darnold sling it, while Bears look putrid00:44:23

Nate Tice & Charles McDonald fire up the Football 301 fifth quarter with a look at four excellent games from Week 14's Sunday slate and one game that will have Chicago Bears fans wearing a bag over their heads.

The guys kick things off with the epic 44-42 carnival show in Los Angeles where the Buffalo Bills fell narrowly to the L.A. Rams in the inter-conference tilt. Both Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen looked excellent, and while only one team got the win, the guys explain that the Bills don't have too much to worry about, aside from seeding in the AFC playoffs.

Nate and Charles also discuss the Seattle Seahawks extending their NFC West lead with a win over the Arizona Cardinals, Sam Darnold throwing for 5 touchdowns in a 42-21 Minnesota Vikings win over the Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers staying frisky in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Closing out the show, the duo share a mind-bogglingly terrible stat from the Chicago Bears loss and give out their game balls for Week 14.

Nate Tice & Charles McDonald join forces to preview some very juicy matchups ahead of an exciting Week 7 slate of NFL action. Next up is the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the San Francisco 49ers in a Super Bowl rematch, as Charles breaks down why people need to calm down about the Chiefs offense not putting up explosive numbers, and Nate explains the dilemma facing Kyle Shanahan about how to attack the Steve Spagnuolo defense.

The Baltimore Ravens head to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Charles breaks down what makes the Ravens offense so unstoppable, while Nate explains how Baker and the Bucs can keep it close.

02 Dec 2024Week 13 fifth quarter: Cousins' 4 INTs kills Falcons & is Justin Tucker washed?00:43:06

Week 13 in the 2024 NFL season, perhaps like your Thanksgiving meal, was not without its mess. The ugly finishes and strange special teams results from the Thursday and Friday matchups bled into Sunday as weird kicking, turnovers and baffling play continued through the weekend.

Nate Tice & Charles McDonald discuss their 5 most important games from Sunday's action, starting with the Atlanta Falcons falling to the Los Angeles Chargers, thanks to Kirk Cousins' 4 interceptions. Charles laments his hometown Falcons and how this was actually a very winnable game for the Dirty Birds, if it weren't for Cousins' penchant for giving up the ball.

Next up, a tight matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens that might have finished differently if it weren't for a trio of missed kicks by legend Justin Tucker. The guys wrap up the show discussing the Minnesota Vikings coming back late against the Arizona Cardinals, Anthony Richardson's final drive heroics in a win over the New England Patriots & the New York Jets doing New York Jets thing in a home loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

19 Nov 2024Playoff hopes for teams on the bubble: Bengals, 49ers, Colts, Broncos & more01:31:05

Nate Tice and Matt Harmon take an in-depth look at the middle class of the NFL as they determine whether each playoff-hopeful team should be preparing for a playoff push or packing their bags.

First, the duo start with the news that the New York Jets fired their general manager Joe Douglas. This move was mostly expected, but it really puts in perspective how far this franchise has fallen from the optimism surrounding the Aaron Rodgers acquisition just two offseasons ago. Nate and Matt also discuss whether Rodgers could return (on another team) in 2025.

Moving on to some teams more deserving of attention, Nate and Matt start with teams on the bubble in the AFC playoff race, as they diagnose the Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals (both sit under 10% playoff odds), Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos and decide whether they are ready to make a playoff push or are destined for Cancun.

The NFC race is even tighter than the AFC, as Nate and Matt give their predictions on the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before attempting to parse out a neck-and-neck NFC West that includes the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams.

05 Feb 2025Chiefs vs. Eagles Super Bowl deep dive & predictions plus Jayden Daniels joins!00:39:34

Nate Tice, Charles McDonald, and Matt Harmon come to you from the Toyota Land Cruiser set at Super Bowl LIX to give their final thoughts and analysis on the ultimate matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The guys kick things off with some banter about Charles' run-in with a New Orleans Saints fan Uber driver before diving deep into the key matchups of the big game.

As the guys analyze both sides of the ball, the conversation turns to the Chiefs' offense and their methodical style of play. One of the biggest battles to watch will be the Chiefs' offensive line trying to hold up against the Eagles' ferocious defensive line. The Chiefs have weaknesses on both sides of the ball, and the offensive line's ability to protect Patrick Mahomes may be the defining factor in this game. The run game, led by Isiah Pacheco, is a “snoozer matchup," as Matt has little confidence in KC's ability to pop any big runs.

Switching to the Eagles’ side of the ball, the guys dive into how Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley will look to exploit the Chiefs' defense. While Kansas City is good at stopping explosive runs, Saquon’s ability to break off big gains adds a layer of intrigue to the matchup. The Eagles’ offensive line, perhaps the most imposing group in the league, will aim to dominate in the trenches. However, the key to this game could be the play of the Chiefs' secondary—especially with standout cornerback Trent McDuffie facing a tall task against Philly’s wide receiver duo of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. After all the analysis, the crew wraps up by giving their final predictions for the game.

Later, Nate and Charles are joined by Washington Commanders rookie phenom Jayden Daniels to break down his outstanding season, the finer details of Kliff Kingsbury's offense, building the ultimate receiver out of guys he's played with and more.

(2:25) - Chiefs offense vs. Eagles defense

(14:55) - Eagles offense vs. Chiefs defense

(29:20) - Jayden Daniels joins the show!

In this action-packed episode of Football 301, Nate Tice and Charles McDonald dive deep into the most intriguing matchups of NFL Week 15. They kick things off by discussing the surprising news of Bill Belichick heading to UNC—Charles is skeptical about the challenge ahead for Belichick at a program with a poor recruiting class. Can coaching scheme make up for a lack of talent? Then, it’s on to the Detroit Lions vs. Buffalo Bills, where Charles and Nate break down the matchup between Josh Allen and the Lions defense. With Allen’s prowess against man coverage and the Bills’ strength in the run game, can the Lions hold their ground?

After the break, it’s time for a hoss fight as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head to LA to face off against the Los Angeles Chargers. Both teams have been defined by their physicality, and this matchup promises to deliver some fierce battles in the trenches. Nate and Charles also dive into Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Philadelphia Eagles, breaking down what’s become an unlikely "slop watch" game. Can Jalen Hurts and the Eagles overpower a Steelers team led by Mike Tomlin, or will Pittsburgh’s scrappy defense find a way to keep it close?

The guys continue with predictions for Indianapolis Colts vs. Denver Broncos, a game that could have major playoff implications for both teams. Can Anthony Richardson take on a top-tier defense like Denver’s? Next, Charles and Nate break down Green Bay Packers vs. Seattle Seahawks, with both teams fighting to assert themselves as true playoff contenders in the NFC. Who will come out on top—Jordan Love and the Packers’ high-flying offense or Geno Smith and the explosive Seahawks’ defense? Finally, the duo end with the mailbag question of the week on the pros and cons of spot drop and man-match coverage.

17 Dec 2024Biggest concern for every contender: Lions, Eagles, Bills, Chiefs, Vikings & more | Football 30101:07:27

In this jam-packed episode of Football 301, hosts Nate Tice and Matt Harmon break down each top NFL contender's biggest concern that could send them home early in January.

The Buffalo Bills kick things off, fresh off a big win. The offense is as dynamic as ever, while the defense—specifically the run defense—might be their Achilles' heel, especially when facing a physical team like the Baltimore Ravens. From there, the conversation turns to the Philadelphia Eagles, where Jalen Hurts' consistency in the passing game is a concern. The Kansas City Chiefs also come under the microscope, where a lack of downfield explosiveness and pass protection problems have made Patrick Mahomes and company more efficient than flashy.

Next, the Detroit Lions’ injury woes have raised major red flags, but their high-powered offense may still be enough to overcome these setbacks. The Minnesota Vikings continue to live and die by big plays, while the Ravens have quietly improved their defense, but one wrinkle in their pass coverage continues to be a weakness. Along the way, the guys hit on other teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans, each with their own set of glaring questions heading into the postseason. Will Baker Mayfield’s hot streak last in Tampa Bay? Can the Texans offense improve enough to compete in January? The duo wrap up with some quick-hit thoughts on the other likely playoff teams.

(2:10) - Buffalo Bills

(9:10) - Philadelphia Eagles

(16:20) - Kansas City Chiefs

(26:25) - Detroit Lions

(32:15) - Baltimore Ravens

(38:05) - Minnesota Vikings

(47:50) - Pittsburgh Steelers

(53:00) - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

(57:40) - Houston Texans

(1:02:40) - Lightning round

Championship matchups are set and Nate Tice and Charles McDonald are here to break down the Divisional Round, starting with Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills getting the best of the Baltimore Ravens. Lamar Jackson and Mark Andrews committed some pivotal turnovers to send the Bills to the AFC Championship vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.

Later on, the guys discuss Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles defense taking care of business vs. Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams. They also question how far Jalen Hurts can take Philly’s passing game with receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith not getting the ball as much as expected. Next the Eagles will face their NFC East rivals, the Washington Commanders, who pulled off the stunning upset of the Detroit Lions behind the spectacular play of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Nate and Charles lament the mistakes made by the Lions, including Jared Goff’s four turnovers.

Finally, they break down the Kansas City Chiefs beating the Houston Texans and discuss the ongoing discourse about the way Patrick Mahomes is treated by the referees.

30 Dec 2024Week 17 fifth quarter: Vikings hold back Packers, Saquon hits 2k & Puka's elite status00:43:51

One more week left in the 2024 regular season and the playoff picture (and first pick in the draft picture) is coming into shape. Nate Tice and Charles McDonald discuss the five biggest results from Week 17's Saturday and Sunday action, leading off with the Minnesota Vikings' well-earned divisional win over the Green Bay Packers.

Nate & Charles discuss how Sam Darnold's play and Kevin O'Connor's scheming always kept Green Bay a step behind and why the Packers defense is not quite up to the task of stopping an elite Super Bowl-contending offense.

Speaking of elite, the guys look back to Saturday and look at the Los Angeles Rams' 13-9 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Nate explains why sophomore receiver Puka Nacua has entered the top-tier of NFL wideouts and why his play the last two seasons is basically unparalleled from a statistical perspective.

Also on Saturday, the Cincinnati Bengals eked out an overtime win over the Denver Broncos, keeping their playoff hopes alive. The guys talk about Joe Burrow's MVP case and how the Broncos still may backpedal into the playoffs against a Kansas City Chiefs team that will likely rest their starters next weekend.

Closing out the show, they chat about Drew Lock and the New York Giants extinguishing the Indianapolis Colts' playoff hopes and Saquon Barkley's 2,000-yard season in a Philadelphia win over the Dallas Cowboys.

(1:50) - Vikings take out Packers

(12:10) - Puka's elite status in Rams win

(24:40) - Burrow keeps Bengals playoff hopes alive

(30:25) - Drew Lock extinguishes Colts

(37:40) - Saquon hits 2k yards over Dallas

03 Dec 2024Funerals for non-playoff teams: Bears, Bengals, 49ers, Browns & more01:16:11

In this episode of Football 301, Nate Tice and Matt Harmon read the obituaries for the most disappointing NFL teams of the 2024 season, declaring each team's hopes and dreams for the 2024 season, where they fell short and what to do about it this offseason. The Cleveland Browns' playoff hopes are shot, with Deshaun Watson’s struggles leaving the team at a crossroads—will they cut bait or roll the dice with Jameis Winston? The Cincinnati Bengals’ high-powered offense has been undermined by a porous defense, raising questions about how they rebuild in the offseason.

The San Francisco 49ers, plagued by injuries and a Super Bowl hangover, face an uncertain future—are they done, or can they regroup next year? The Chicago Bears, full of young talent, are caught in a cycle of dysfunction. A coaching change could be the key to a turnaround, but that hasn't worked out for them in the past. The New York Jets are stuck in limbo with Aaron Rodgers’ return not going as planned, leaving them to figure out where to go from here.

The Miami Dolphins’ fragile roster has them teetering on the edge of playoff elimination, and Nate and Matt question if they have enough to make another run next year. Finally, the Dallas Cowboys have fallen short of expectations, and with major roster questions, the guys wonder if it’s time for a shake-up or just more of the same.

(15:00) Cincinnati Bengals

(28:10) San Francisco 49ers

(42:50) Chicago Bears

(49:35) New York Jets

In this episode of Football 301, Nate Tice and Charles McDonald dive into their Week 14 preview, highlighting one thing to watch in every game. With playoff hopes on the line for many teams, the guys break down what to expect from a slate of games featuring struggling offenses and elite defenses.

They kick things off with the Cleveland Browns visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers, where Charles thinks 6.5 points is too low for the Steelers given the Browns' ongoing offensive struggles. Nate also highlights Russell Wilson’s aging but effective play as a key factor in Pittsburgh's recent success. From there, the discussion shifts to an AFC East matchup between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, with the Jets’ defense starting to unravel after Robert Saleh’s firing and Miami trying to find momentum to bring into the offseason.

The “Hoss Fight of the Week” features the Seattle Seahawks at Arizona Cardinals. Nate highlights the improving Seahawks defense, led by Ernest Jones, while Charles wonders if Seattle’s pass-heavy offense is sustainable long-term. Over in Carolina, Bryce Young faces his toughest test yet against the Philadelphia Eagles, with both guys wondering if the Carolina Panthers can keep up against the Eagles’ elite defense.

Later, the guys look at the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs, where Nate points to the potential impact of DJ Humphries' start at left tackle for Kansas City and predicts a big game for Chargers' receiver Ladd McConkey, before diving into a Slop Watch as the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the Tennessee Titans and hitting the mailbag question of the week.

15 Jan 2025Wild Card LOSERS postmortem: Where do the Vikings, Steelers & Packers go from here?01:21:24

In this episode of Football 301, hosts Nate Tice and Matt Harmon dive into the aftermath of Wild Card Weekend, offering every team that took an L in the Wild Card round both a full postmortem and a potential offseason plan. They begin by revisiting the Minnesota Vikings' season, highlighting Sam Darnold's commendable but ultimately unsuccessful stint as quarterback. Matt likens Darnold's Vikings tenure to Game of Thrones' tragic Robb Stark, while Nate dissects the ongoing issues with Minnesota’s offensive line and the team's need for drastic improvements.

Next, the duo shifts focus to the Los Angeles Chargers, who just didn't have the juice to hang against the Houston Texans. Nate points out how the Chargers' reliance on star power left them vulnerable, and the Texans’ dominant defensive line exposed their shortcomings. But it’s not all doom and gloom for the Chargers, as the team has solid foundations to build on. The conversation shifts to the Green Bay Packers, where the young roster showed flashes but ultimately couldn't put together consistent performances. Matt and Nate break down the need for a clearer offensive identity. The duo also hit on the Pittsburgh Steelers, who need to take a look in the mirror after yet another early playoff exit.

The episode wraps up with a look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos. Matt questions whether Tampa's offense can sustain its momentum, particularly with impending changes at offensive coordinator. Despite Bowles' underperforming defense, the Buccaneers could still be a threat in a weak NFC South. Meanwhile, the Broncos’ season is viewed as a success, given their offensive turnaround. Nate and Matt discuss how Denver's strong defense and improving offense could set them up for a brighter future.

(36:50) - Packers

16 Dec 2024Week 15 fifth quarter: Allen looks unstoppable over Lions, Eagles smother Steelers & Colts meltdown00:38:56

The Buffalo Bills dropped over 40 points for the second time in two weeks...only this time they won! 48 points was certainly enough to do it in another explosive performance from MVP frontrunner Josh Allen and this Bills squad, this time surviving a ping-pong game against the Detroit Lions where Jared Goff's nearly 500 yards of passing just was too little too late.

Nate Tice & Charles McDonald break down Bills/Lions as well as the four other best games of the week, including another win for the Philadelphia Eagles, this time over the cross-state sometimes-rival Pittsburgh Steelers, bringing Jalen Hurts' birds squad to 12-2. The guys also discuss a Denver Broncos win that was all about momentum after a costly Jonathan Taylor goal-line fumble, the Washington Commanders fighting off a late rally from the New Orleans Saints and a Cincinnati Bengals win over the Tennessee Titans that was about as messy of a game as you'll see all year.

Closing the show, the guys give out their Week 15 Game Balls to a pair of defenders who changed the course of their games.

(0:35) - Bills take down Lions in 90-pt offensive wonder

(9:45) - Eagles prove Steelers offense isn't enough

(17:05) - Colts melt down against Broncos

(23:05) - Commanders hold off late Saints rally

Can Kirk Cousins and a new coaching staff elevate the Atlanta Falcons into being a top offense? Will a below average Baltimore Ravens offensive line hamper the offensive firepower of Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry? Can a revitalized Los Angeles Rams offense crack the top 3 with the one-two punch of Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua catching passes from Matt Stafford? But really, is next season shaping up to be a battle of last year's conference champs, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers?

(3:20) - Buffalo Bills

(13:20) - Atlanta Falcons

(17:45) - Philadelphia Eagles

(21:05) - Indianapolis Colts

(23:45) - Baltimore Ravens

(29:55) - Green Bay Packers

(35:30) - Cincinnati Bengals

(40:20) - Los Angeles Rams

(45:15) - Houston Texans

(50:25) - Miami Dolphins

(54:15) - Detroit Lions

03 Sep 2024Final 2024 season predictions: Super Bowl, MVP, more awards01:15:52

Nate Tice is joined by Charles McDonald and Matt Harmon to give their final predictions ahead of the 2024 NFL season, including awards like MVP and rookies of the year, division winners, Super Bowl champs and more.

The trio start off with their picks for Offensive & Defensive Player of the Year (one chalky and one dark horse), as Ceedee Lamb is the favorite, but Charles likes Nico Collins as a dark horse. For Offensive & Defensive Rookie of the Year, the trio discuss Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Byron Murphy, Dallas Turner, Blake Corum and more. The hosts have three different answers for Coach of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year before moving on to MVP, where Matt likes C.J. Stroud to take a big year two leap, and Charles gets as chalky as you can get.

Later, Nate, Charles and Matt move on to their division winners and playoff teams, as they agree on every AFC division winner but disagree on some key NFC divisions. All three have the Kansas City Chiefs making the Super Bowl, but the NFC teams are all different. Nate gives the Green Bay Packers as his Super Bowl champ.

Next, Nate and Charles enter Four-Minute Offense to analyze a couple key matchups to keep an eye on, including a hoss fight in Indianapolis and Jalen Hurts against a Tampa Bay defense that's given him fits in the past.

The hosts wrap up with "Slop Watch," where they give you a reason to watch a game you might otherwise turn off, including a chess match in Chicago, the Arizona Cardinals trying to stop Jayden Daniels and a New England Patriots team that just might have the juice to keep it close against the San Francisco 49ers.

The duo start with the loaded NFC North, as Matt pushes back on Nate's Sam Darnold hype, Nate loves the Chicago and Detroit defenses and both are very optimistic about the Green Bay offense.

Next up is the NFC West, as Nate continues his praise of the Arizona offense, both express optimism about the Seattle Seahawks and concern regarding San Francisco and Los Angeles.

For the NFC East, Matt is completely out on the Washington defense but likes the New York defense a lot, and both reluctantly take the over for the Dallas Cowboys and comfortably take the over for the Philadelphia Eagles.

13 Aug 2024Best, worst and most interesting units to watch this season01:08:18

Nate Tice is joined by the great Charles McDonald to break down a few of the most intriguing position groups or units to watch this NFL season, whether good, interesting or primed for implosion. The duo start off the show with the news that Minnesota Vikings first-round pick J.J. McCarthy will undergo knee surgery, as the two give their (surprisingly positive) thoughts on presumed Week 1 starter Sam Darnold.

Next, Nate and Charles give their two units to watch that should impress this season: the Chicago Bears back seven and the Detroit Lions secondary, both improved over last season.

The most interesting units to keep an eye on are the Green Bay Packers defensive front, the New York Jets offensive line, the San Francisco 49ers defensive backs and the new additions to the Kansas City Chiefs offense.

Some unit groups already look like they're ready to implode before our eyes this season. Nate and Charles highlight (lowlight?) the Atlanta Falcons defense, the Jacksonville Jaguars offensive line and the Cincinnati Bengals defensive line.

The duo finish off the show with a lightning round of their favorite individual performances from Week 1 of NFL preseason action.

Nate Tice is joined by Charles McDonald to give their thoughts and takeaways from Week 3 of NFL action. The duo start by recapping the Monday night games and discussing just how bad the Cincinnati Bengals defense is, and what's going right with the Buffalo Bills that's allowed them to cruise to a 3-0 start — including a dominant win over the Jacksonville Jaguars last night.

Next, Nate and Charles deep dive on the rest of the 3-0 teams and try to determine what's going right and how good each team is. They dialogue on the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs.

Later, the hosts take a look at some struggling players and teams and determine how concerned we should be. It's only August 1st and things are already looking charger-y for the Los Angeles Chargers. Justin Herbert is in a walking boot for the next two weeks, following a plantar fascia diagnosis on Thursday afternoon, so Nate Tice and Charles McDonald kick off the episode with the latest bad omen for the team that just can never seem to catch a break.

Later, after discussing the new contract for Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, arguably the most successful tackle product from the 2020 draft class, the guys return to the sour note and share the teams, players and general football things that make them the saddest entering the 2024 season. Both Russell Wilson's current team (the Pittsburgh Steelers) and his former team (the Denver Broncos) make the cut, as well as both teams Derek Carr has suited up for in the Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints. Who else is making Nate and Charles sad as football season approaches? Give the episode a listen to find out.

08 Aug 2024Friskiest teams of the 2024 NFL season01:05:30

Nate Tice is joined by the great Charles McDonald to determine the "friskiest" NFL teams this season. Nate and Charles start by defining "frisky" as any team with a win total below 9 games that will be a tough out for any opponent. The duo highlight the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans as the friskiest of the bunch, before highlighting why people might be sleeping on the Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Nate and Charles finish off the show with two "reverse frisky" teams (teams with a sub-9 win total that deserve to be even lower): the Los Angeles Chargers, who are still at least a year away, and the Washington Commanders, who have built a comparatively small and slow roster that doesn't appear ready to beat many NFL teams this season.

(3:20) The Arizona Cardinals will surprise people this year

(12:30) The Tennessee Titans added a ton of good players

(22:55) The Seattle Seahawks are being slept on

(28:00) The New England Patriots are not the worst team in the league

(37:55) The Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought back all their good players

(46:10) The Los Angeles Chargers are at least a year away

(53:40) What are the Washington Commanders doing?

30 Jul 2024Tua & Love get extended, plus 6 quasi-baked takes before the NFL preseason01:09:08

The NFL preseason is just days away and the 2024 season right around the corner, but Nate Tice and Matt Harmon have been stewing with some half-baked NFL takes they've been tinkering with off-season.

After kicking off the podcast discussing a pair of quarterback extensions in the deals for Tua Tagovailoa and Jordan Love, the guys open up their notebooks from the offseason and share some theories that are not quite ready for the primetime, but may prove right by the time this season is over: the Los Angeles Chargers offense may not be as bad as it seems, the Tennessee Titans might be better than this divisional foe this season and a wild NFC West playoff prediction.

(4:15) - Tua Tagovailoa's extension & the Miami Dolphins' ceiling

(10:01) - Jordan Love extended in Green Bay with young group of pass-catchers

(23:45) - Half-Take 1: LA Chargers offense won't be as bad as you think

(32:11) - Half-Take 2: Titans offense will be better than the Jaguars offense

(41:11) - Half-Take 3: Diontae Johnson was the best acquisition of the offseason

28 Aug 2024Final predictions for every AFC team: Jets, Titans, Steelers & more02:13:10

Nate Tice and Charles McDonald join forces to preview every team in the AFC. For each team they discuss win totals, give a player to watch and try to predict why each team could under- or over-perform expectations this season.

After discussing why the Georgia Bulldog championship-winning defense has underperformed so far in the NFL, Nate and Charles dive into why they are hyped about the AFC South, as Nate predicts that all four teams will go over their win totals. They're especially curious about the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts.

The AFC West looks worse than it has in years past, and both expect the Kansas City Chiefs to get plenty of easy wins against their division rivals.

The AFC East is up next, as Nate thinks Drake Maye should start immediately for the New England Patriots, and that the Buffalo Bills have an underrated run game.

Finally, the AFC North looks to be an absolute bloodbath, as each team has major question marks that could slow them down, but the talent on all four rosters is too good to ignore.

(2:20) What happened to the national champion Georgia defense?

(10:30) AFC South: Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans

(51:05) AFC West: Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs

(1:16:20) AFC East: New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and Buffalo Bills

(1:42:45) AFC North: Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens

Nate Tice and Charles McDonald preview the most interesting NFL matchups of Week 5. The Houston Texans host the Buffalo Bills but will it ultimately be a QB vs. QB battle? Then, it’s a way-too-early 2025 mock draft as Nate & Charles give their top 10 picks. How early are they taking some of college football’s brightest stars like Colorado’s Travis Hunter & Shedeur Sanders, Miami’s Cam Ward, and more?
