Taking The Night Off 01/09/25

We’ve had it for now. At least until the back-to-back this weekend. Tuesday’s SO loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets positively broke Jeff’s brain. Jordan doesn’t seem too well-for-ware over it, herself. Your co-hosts had posted up at a South Hills gin mill for what they’d hoped would be a gratifying win over what Matt Vensel called “Border Rival” Columbus - alas, the story was all too familiar, with Jarry flailing to make even a single save in the shootout.

Enjoy this spirited catch-up and hockey chat. The Penguins are probably going to get their asses handed to them tonight when McDavid and the Oilers visit the Paint Can, but there’s more hockey this weekend, against far more ‘human’ teams. We’ll be back with you on Monday morning!

Islanders mascot, Sparky The Dragon can’t seem make up his mind which team he wants to root for …at least that USED to be the case, when Sparky served as the mascot for the New York Dragons of Arena Football fame. The NHL’s New York Islanders, though unable to come up with their own mascot idea, have remained a thorn in the collective sides of the Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey Club. Brock Nelson looks to make his return following a brief stint on the IR, and he’s been red-hot of late. So, for that matter, has Sidney Patrick Crosby, the two veteran centermen with 35 (Crosby) and 34 (Nelson) points on the season, respectively.

Listeners, thanks for being with us in the 2022-2023 Pittsburgh Penguins regular season. Things didn’t turn out the way we’d all hoped, but it’s been a wild ride - one we’re glad we took. If it weren’t for YOU - yes, we mean YOU - then we’d just be talking out into the void. And that, to say nothing of the Penguins’ season coming to an untimely close, is a pretttttty dark thought to think. OK, folks: Let’s tune in and support these Pens, one last time, and root them on to defeat the presumed champs of the Conor Bedard Lottery (CBJ-CBL). Sidney Crosby. Evgeni Malkin. Kris Letang. Jake Guentzel. Bryan Rust. Jason Zucker. Rickard Rakell. These players put on a truly entertaining show this year, did they not? Of course, there are other fish who require frying, and those stories will play themselves out as the horn - and hopefully not the blackpowder cannon at Nationwide Arena - sounds for the final time tonight.

Enjoy this game, it’s the last Penguins game until mid-October of 2023. We’ll be back with off-season episodes, starting next week, on an official schedule which we’ll soon announce. Tonight, your Penguins pay the Toronto Maple Leafs a visit at Scotia Bank Arena in Ontario Province. The recent seven-game losing streak snapped in Washington just two nights ago, the Pens go back to goaler DeSmith, comma Casey, of Rochester, NH in an attempt to ride the momentum of whatever chemistry may have led to the team’s first victory - 4-1, over the Caps - in over two weeks. Felt longer than that, didn’t it? Sam Poulin is sent down to WBS, Mark Friedman is recalled but didn’t skate this morning. What seemed like it might be a wiping out of PIT’s D-Corps by a bruising Capitals team earlier this week …apparently wasn’t. All defenseman were present for today’s morning skate. Let’s hope the Penguins of Pittsburgh can keep a good thing going. And finally, a moment of silence in Remembrance of one Cheeks Klapanen, a healthy scratch again tonight as the Pens take on 42’s old team.

Last time Missouri’s NHL franchise were in town, the Pens came from behind in a tough-fought victory over a team who did just about anything they could to get under Pittsburgh’s skin - literally - including a brawl that led to a bleeding cut on the bridge of 87’s nose. It wasn’t a good game plan for Berube’s Blues, though, as the Penguins emerged with a 5-3 comeback W and, in the words of Josh Getzoff, a “2-pt Party on 5th Ave.”

“Evgeni Malkin’s 1,000th NHL Game” PIT@CHI 11/20/22

Last night in Winnipeg, Tristan Jarry and the Pittsburgh Penguins played hard-and-smart for the FULL sixty minutes of regulation. They got rewarded, in the form of their very first shutout victory of the season. Following a historically bad losing streak, the Pens needed two things to come together in order for the team to feel stabilized. For one, they needed to play their game for the entirety of three periods. Then they were going to need their top goaltender to ratchet-strap the payload down to the bed of the bed of the pickup, chisel the ice off the tow hitch, and get back to work. Forget the recent 7 game losing streak, because when it comes to playing on the road in Chicago, the Penguins haven't won in that barn since 2009. So on the night Geno hits the 1.000-game mark, I'm hoping we see the Penguins throw that particular monkey off their back.

“Paternity Test” PIT@CAR 01/14/23

Last night at PPG Paints Arena, Jason Zucker decided he’d had enough. So, Zuck picked a fight with a much bigger guy and he did just fine. The Pittsburgh crowd went wild, but the Penguins kinda just went, “Wha?” … And so, the Pens got their butts handed to them by the Jets, and the Black-and-Yellow faithful were sent home just a little more bruised than they already were, after what’s been a pretty lousy first half of the 2022-23 season for Allegheny County, Pennsylvania’s NHL Franchise. Casey DeSmith goes between the pipes against the mighty Carolina Hurricanes tonight. Just maybe, this depleted, demoralized Pittsburgh team will play their hearts out for him tonight and earn themselves a much-needed character victory against one of the best teams in the world’s best league.

Matt Murray. The very first thing that should come to mind, when a Penguins fan sees that name in print, is that he lifted the Pens to back-to-back Stanley Cups. Period, end of sentence. And tonight, “Muzz” is back on the Leafs’ active roster, set for a return to the ice at PPG Paints Arena. I, too, will make my return to the ice with last season’s beer league team, out here where I’m currently traveling for music gigs. I just happen to have my hockey bag and they just happen to have a game. My jersey number: 53. Now, is it pure coincidence that on this very night, Mr. Teddy Blueger (also #53, in case you were unaware) is himself set to make his own way back onto the Penguins’ active roster? I think not. If you’re buying a lottery ticket, placing sports bets tonight, etc… make sure the number fifty-three is in there somewhere. It should be a great game in snowy Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania tonight. Leafs at Pens, Reverse Retro Jerseys pulled over your Pengweenos, and one of them will say: BLUEGER.

This episode kicks off with my new Penguins-themed song, "Head Of The Snake (Funny Mistake)."  This is a ballad that chronicles St. Louis Blues' head coach Craig Berube's weird decision not to inform his players that poking the bear would be a bad idea. It kicks off with a sample of Berube's pregame interview from before Wednesday's epic matchup between the Pens and Blues, and proceeds to paint a heartfelt musical portrait of a man in a moment of regret: Berube. “Win And You’re In (The Playoff Picture)” SJS@PIT 01/28/23

Dustin Tokarski is a new dad; like, REALLY new. My guess is he hasn’t slept in over 24 hours. Casey DeSmith starts in net tonight, and my guess is that means Casey DeSmith isn’t getting pulled even if he gives up a handful of goals in the first period. I thought Casey played damn well against the Capitals two nights ago, but coming as that performance was on the heels of a fairly dreadful outing against Florida on Tuesday, CDS has yet to establish himself as solid-of-late. Sending good vibes out to DeSmith, may the force be with him. For if it is not, the Penguins will likely go to sleep on the outside of the playoff picture. Buffalo, who are only 1pt back of Pittsburgh, themselves play Minnesota tonight, and I've got a feeling Buffalo will take that one. Let us pray.

He’s really gotten the business end of whatever cosmic decision-making process occurs, out there in the aether of space and time. Injury. Recurring stroke. Another injury. Death of his father. And yet, like one of those water-weighted boxing-dummies that ALWAYS springs backup, ready for more, Letting is once again good to go, cleared for game action by the Pittsburgh Penguins’ coaching staff. It should be a thrilling thing to witness tonight, as 58 (probably?) lines up for the National Anthem at PPG Paints Arena for a tilt against Aleksander Barkov and the Florida Panthers.

It’s time to get one back from the team who handed the Penguins their first loss of the season. Tonight at le Centre Bell, Mike Sullivan’s waddling, flightless wonders will step onto the ice - for the first time today - around 6:30pm Eastern time. The Penguins did not hold a morning skate on this Saturday, the second half of a back to back. That’s become the norm for a team whose average age is higher than any other such cumulative figure in the NHL. I wonder who we’ll see in net tonight. There are rumblings of various explanations as to why we haven't seen Tristan Jarry in net, but suffice to say DeSmith has more than answered the bell. Speaking of Bells, will Casey go again tonight at Centre Bell?

The Isles are in a position pretty similar to where the Penguins were at a few weeks ago: Lots of players out with COVID protocol issues, injuries, etc. How will this bode for the two teams? The Penguins are on the rise, in the midst of a four game winning streak... whereas the Isles can't buy a win right now. Is this the night they right the ship and find the negative space around Tristan Jarry?  Or will the Penguins continue to dig DEEP, as they have in recent games, willing their way to victory against talented Canadian squads?

Fly Penguins Fly Episode 97: PIT@CGY 10/25/22 … It’s the second half of what will be TWO back-to-back’s for the Penguins on this western Canada road trip, and the first half was a real doozy. Connor McDavid and company ran the Boys-from-the-Burgh straight outta Rogers Place last night, scoring four goals against PIT in the 2nd frame alone, and outshooting the Pens 26-4 in the process - just in that one period. Yeah. And so, heading into tonight’s matchup with Calgary, there’s surely some tightening up and re-committing to be done in the minds and practice of the Penguins.

Before the puck drops tonight, the Penguins will honor the 2009 Conn Smythe Trophy-winning, three time Stanley Cup Champion, Penguin-for-life Evgeni Malkin with a special ceremony. Malkin, who has played his entire career both in Pittsburgh and in the shadow of one of the Hockey-Rushmore caliber Sidney Crosby, is a treasure of this franchise, of this league, and of the sport of hockey. Cherish these, the last years of what has been a magnificent career for 71.

Nordy. It’s not a word. Marc Andre Fleury won’t play tonight, Tristan Jarry will. My head is full of music and actual bagels and pizza, as I play out-of-town gigs with my band in the states Garden and Empire. I’ll be home in the Burgh for Thanksgiving week, and so will the Penguins - kind of. First, though, they’ve got to get through Minnesota (tonight), Winnipeg, and Chicago, none of which sounds easy and each of which seem, after the past few weeks of miserable hockey played by the Pens, almost like a likely L for a team who simply can’t seem to find its game. We pray to the hockey gods tonight, for cohesion among a team stacked with talent, for a W, for …just about any damned thing.

Kris Letang is out, indefinitely, after suffering a second stroke. His first was back in 2014, due in part to a condition relating to his heart. Wishing Kris and his family all the best.

It’s that time again: Sid versus Ovi, eighty-seven versus eight, Penguins versus the Capitals. It’s ALWAYS exciting, isn’t it? And these two teams seem to perennially compete for a playoff spot, destined to at least ‘brush past’ one another en route to a playoff run. In the case of PIT against WSH, the ‘brush-by’ in question is typically of the less-gentle variety, and tempers tend to flare. It’s DeSmith in net tonight and, at least of late, that hasn’t meant wonderful things for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Number one from Rochester, NH looks to steady his side-to-side rocking ship, to stop pucks, to Get A Win. Casey needs a clean W for himself and for his Penguins who, whether due to injury bugs, bad bounces, or off-ice misfortune, have for some time looked a long way off from the back-to-back champs they once were. Rather, the Pens have fairly remade themselves as the club who takes their sweet time establishing a collective identity - until pretty darned deep into each NHL campaign.

It has been a MINUTE since Jeff’s wife, Ashley Taylor joined the podcast. With Jordan DeFigio taking a scheduled maintenance day away from the team, Ashley steps in to chat Penguins hockey, 4 Nations Face-off, Sidney Crosby, and Star Wars… sort of.

Sidney Crosby will, in fact play for Team Canada, despite aggravating one of his wrists in a SO loss to the NJ Devils last week. The hockey world rejoices that Crosby will don the handsome Team Canada sweater and participate in the tournament, but what contribution will he make to the team’s goal of coming out on top in the …sort of best-on-best competition? Don’t ask us, we’re mostly being goofy today.
