Holy smokes, on this episode we are celebrating 5 years of fishy podcasting. This was recorded live on Silver Lake with special guests: Dave Kellam, Doc Martin, Nick Hudson-Swogger (from Diana's Bath Salts) and Rich Collins. We also got dozens of calls from listeners who wanted to share congratulations and fishy jokes. On a personal level, I want to thank every listener for being part of this adventure and I hope to keep doing this. I literally weeped with joy while mixing this episode. Fishing Podcast Episode #100 - The Nerds got together with an intrepid group of New England anglers and fishy businesses for the annual Ice Fishing Grudge Match with Tim Moore Outdoors - 0ne of the best ice fishing guides in New England. The teams fishing for bragging rights were Daddymac Lures, Team Wicked Fishah and Get Bent TV. Some of the teams pre-fished Lake Winnipesaukee at 2 a.m. before the official 7 a.m. start of the match. Participants were eager to go after the legendary white perch in the lake, and knew there were also great crappie, sunfish, rock bass, rainbow trout and lake trout swimming in the depths. Clay was excited too because this was the first day he was driving his new snowmobile on the ice. Everyone had a blast and Tim and Chuck put everyone on lots of fish. This episode is full of tips and tricks to catching fish in Lake Winnipesaukee, funny stories from folks on the ice, and some special 100th episode surprises!

Dave from the Fish Nerds chats with Jesse Prunier and Jess Cole, who are making their fishy dreams come true at the Sumner Brook Fish Farm in Ossipee, NH.

In addition to selling trout for stocking, they have a pay-to-fish pond and they sell herbs and smoked trout.   Jess runs the other family business, Sumner Brook Herbals.

The fish farming couple wear their hearts on their sleeves (and on the bumper of their Volvo station wagon)

It seems everything on the farm is fishy.

Teen Arrested For Taping Fish To ATMs: KSL says a Provo, Utah teen was recently charged for taping fish to ATMs around town. The teen's Instagram account, "fish_bandit84," gained a following of 52,000 people. Police believe his fish videos were meant as a joke and to gain followers. The teenager once taped a fish to a Provo police car. He caused minimal damage.

Below is a wikipedia entry about totoaba and why it is an endangered species.  The damming and overuse of the Colorado River has changed the salinity of the totoaba spawning grounds.  That is severely affecting the totoaba population.  They are a slow growing fish that does not spawn until it is 6-7 years old. Also, the Chinese use totoaba bladders in “traditional medicine” which can sell for 20,000 each. Their own related species the bahaba is in very short supply so they have switched to totaba.

The Nerds caught up with Kristen Berube who just wrote a book called "Confessions of a Camo Queen: Living with an Outdoorsman".  She has a great time talking about her crazy life as an outdoorswoman with a husband, three children, six dogs and a pig in Missoula, Montana. A denturist by trade and a graduate of Montana State University and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, she get's in the spirit of the podcast by telling funny stories and doing a spot-on impersonation of English royalty.  This show also includes one of our best "Fish in the News" segments and a report on the Sunapee trout by fellow Fish Nerd Doc Martin.

The Show-We are going to monthly.  We cannot worry about what other podcasts do or what the pundits and experts say is necessary to have a good podcast.  That’s fine for people who want to follow formulas that make money and content is dictated by what sells.  We could do an a-hole POV podcast like that guy joe rogaine or yet another crime podcast but we are hardcore indie. And we are about fish fishing and eating fish.  We do not follow any rules and never have.  We do not have a narrow niche, we do not have a regular format (we do have a loose framework currently) and try as we might we do not have consistent release dates scheduled precisely.  We are punk rock and while our production limitations are not the result of chemicals and ego they are the result of raising families, founding businesses, doing research and dividing our creativity and energy as best we can over any number of projects, in other words doing our thing.  And Fish Nerds is one of our things.  And so it survives and we keep casting pod and rod! Clay and his ever evolving merry band of helpers have broadcast this pod since 2011!
