Over the many years I've worked as a childcare educator, I've seen a lot of change in how we do things and in the family unit. Being of an age where I knew life before the likes of mobile phones, computers and other devices, I'm often concerned with how they are used in this modern, fast-paced world of ours!


Increasingly I'm seeing a generation of children who expect to be entertained and who are clearly lacking creative imagination. This is of course hardly surprising when so many are raised from their beginnings knowing little more than instant gratification and a dopamine hit from pressing a button or viewing content.

I've always been a big believer in getting into a regular routine of reading to children as soon as possible after they are born. This benefits their future development in many ways, and I've discussed this in a number of earlier episodes with some wonderful guests.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to meet a wonderful woman on Instagram whose handle is Nanny Miss Monique. I was intrigued after listening to Miss Monique participate in a live titled 'It's Never Too Early To Start Reading To Your Baby'. I loved her passion, and I asked her if I could talk with her on First Time Mums Chat.

I'm sure you'll find her passion as enthralling as I do and during our chat, I asked her what sort of books she would recommend to a mum with a baby aged from 0 - 6 months.

There are lots of myths surrounding the terrible twos that I am constantly reminded of by parents. Many of the parents that I meet view the terrible twos as some sort of stage or milestone that they will inevitably face and be challenged with!


I've worked with numerous babies and toddlers over many years and I can assure you there is no magical behaviour change that occurs when that clock strikes midnight and their second birthday begins!


Every child develops at their own pace and what may be true for some may not apply to others. Why should we expect every child to be the same?


Children are learning all the time and there are going to be challenging times no matter what their temperament.


Perhaps a more positive way to look at the terrible twos is part of your child's learning journey where they are experimenting and learning about their boundaries for the first time!
