09 May 2016Ep 017: I'm an anxious eater.00:24:22

Our world believes food kills us or cures us but information tends to conflict. Eating a "no" food can provoke anxiety in many people. Does this happen to you? Let's dig in to find ways to remove anxiety's wedge and power.

Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds.

Key Points:

  • Thank you students from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro's Nutrition Department for the fun and energizing discussions on weight, eating disorders, and body image. Julie completed her dietetic internship there and thankful for the time there.
  • Even though it may appear to be simple, nutrition science is not an easy science A.
  • Our world believes food kills us or cures us. Stop the dichotomous insanity! Food anxiety exists because nutrition science is a fluid science that cannot be categorized into yes and no boxes.
  • Anxiety can't hurt us yet the things we do to avoid the anxiety harm us.
  • Anxiety from food avoidance keeps us from experiencing joy. It also promotes poor health by increasing stress hormones which can promote heart disease and strokes.
  • Phobia 10 point scales combined with fear food examples can help one move past the anxiety from eating those fear foods. This is long term incredible work that requires a therapist and dietitian. So worth your time and energy!!
  • Let's address that fear of fat. Fat phobia provokes Julie dropped an F bomb because that fear promotes disease, isolation, oppression, and ignorant stereotypes.
  • Size diversity makes us beautiful.
  • Size acceptance helps people of ALL sizes experience more health and better health care.
  • Peel back anxiety layers and find fears based on something old living in our body. Challenge it and you can get back to being you. Which brings you closer to your joy.

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear Food,

The high school version of me would have been the last person on this Earth to ever believe that my relationship with you would end up causing me so much heartache and pain.

I was fine until college. Backtracking to childhood, I always loved you. I was a foodie, never overthought and wasn't obsessed with the idea of what I would eat next. Food was wonderful, especially "treats" or "junk-food" type items that I didn't get to eat often. I know there were times when my eyes were bigger than my stomach, but maybe this is a thing that many young kids also experience?

High school was normal. I was active playing a sport that I loved, busy with school, and spending time with family and friends. Senior year, I found myself with more freedom than ever. A lot of it was spent watching tv or cooking and eating with friends.

Then came college. After a particularly sad and confusing breakup with a boy and betrayal by a friend, my college friend group disintegrated. In retrospect, I think I may have retreated into TV and snacks, and there was no one to tell me to do differently. Then, during Thanksgiving break, I realized that I had been too free with you, food, and my "cute little body" was quickly becoming something I was ashamed of and disgusted by.

I'd never had anything but a small body and lived in a family of small people. I decided I would pay more attention to what and how much I was eating. I figured this would help get myself under control. And from the moment I became aware of your presence and your power in my life, things really have never been the same since.

Fast forward through five months of increasingly difficult and dreadful exercise regimens and an increasingly restricted intake of food, I left school early to move home and enter outpatient treatment.

My junior year, I finally transferred into XYZ College. I was ecstatic, but the restriction started almost right away. This time, though, my body was far more resistant to restriction, and it was increasingly difficult to not give in and binge. I returned home after only 3 months, and didn't return to school until the next summer.

Now, my 4th year of college is almost over. That means I've been binging for a year now. It's hard to believe that I ever was able to restrict at all, because binging is such an everyday part of my life now. Over these past years, I have had consistent therapy, and have also met with dietitians, but it seems like nothing is able to help me. In fact, the binging seems like it's getting worse and worse – in the past two months alone, I have gained X pounds.

I think I've lost hope in ever being normal with food or body image. I feel so abnormal and wrong. In recovery, binging was always my biggest fear, and now it's my constant reality. I have all the tools and resources I should need to help myself and change, but I'm still doing this.

How did we get this far?!

Love,

Secretly Broken

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear Food,

Food controls my daily life.

I think about my next meal every second of every day.

Stress makes me restrict or binge. There’s no in between.

I lost XX pounds in the month of April and May - almost hospitalizing me.

Then I gained XX+ pounds in one month - August.

I binged - cookies, ice cream, anything sugary. Every day sometimes twice a day.

Food controls me. But I am more powerful. I can control this.

Disordered eating is an issue for me.

I want to look like myself again. Not me during restriction. Not me during binging. Normal me. Physically and mentally me.

Love,
Me

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear Food,

You and I have had our ups and our downs.  When I was younger I avoided you.  When I was older, I feared you.  Yet, I could never quite get over you.  You helped me connect with my children through baking and cooking.  Covered with flour in the kitchen, we created some of my favorite memories.  Then I would swear you off and eat 'diet' versions of you, leaving my children confused and looking for an answer.

I realized that something was wrong when my 7 year old twin girls started measuring themselves.  They would tell me proudly how they had said no to the pizza at the cafeteria and had only eaten the small salad for lunch.  I had never talked to them about you, food, but they caught on quickly.  I felt awful.  I didn't want my children to go through the same confusion and disappointment that I felt.  This led me to my journey to finding my own peace with you, food.

After discovering intuitive eating and ellyn satter's books about a year ago, our family has practiced the principles as we eat together each day.  We have learned how to reconnect with both nutritious and fun versions of you.  I have felt so much peace when I've see them eat a cookie with enthusiasm, and then reach for bell peppers with that same enjoyment.  The obsessions with weight are gone for both me and my children.  I thought we had it all figured out!

Then we hit a roadblock with you, food.  My 6 year old son was diagnosed with PANDAS, an autoimmune disorder.  He has an infection in his brain, and his body is confusing his own brain tissue for the infection itself.  After an ineffective round of antibiotics, his doctor is pushing us to go on a 'no sugar diet', so there is nothing to feed the infection.  This means no sugar and very limited fruits and carbohydrates.  The diet could last for months or even years.

I am happy to do anything I can to see my son be healthy again.  But I am concerned, food.  I am worried that by throwing good and bad labels into our families food vocabulary, we will undo all of our hard work. I am worried that even after my son is healthy, he will still have a fear of these versions of you.  I am worried that he will start sneaking you at friends houses or at school and end up eating more sugar than he is now (which isn't a lot).

Yet, I am also worried that if I let him choose, he will never get better.  I have always been good at being extreme with you, food.  It seems easier just to ban everything that might be hurting him.

When I brought up these concerns with our doctor, he just seemed confused.  He said that if I have the discipline to make an extreme change, that could only be helpful to my son.

The holiday season is here and it is time to make a decision.  Is there a way to eat intuitively and follow these dietary restrictions?  If we leave weight out of it, is it still a diet?  I just want to make life a little more simple for my children than it was for me.

Sincerely,
Scared and Hopeful

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear Food,

We’ve had a complicated relationship for as long as I can remember. I have always felt guilty when eating you and blamed you for my oversized body (according to society's standards). My guilt and shame turned into a full fledged eating disorder, which I was entrenched in for years. I was diagnosed with anorexia in 2015 after years of restricting, over exercising, and hating myself. I finally agreed to get help from professionals, which meant having to eat a lot of you food. I was forced to eat what I considered my “bad” foods or “off limit” foods and refrain from exercise. It took years to restore my weight and countless appointments with my dietician, doctor, and therapist. It was and still is the hardest battle I have ever had to fight.

Here I am now, in 2019, and still have a difficult time with you. I still overthink you and I worry that you will always have control over my life. But I have also come a long way in understanding our relationship and the distorted thoughts I have about you. I have recently felt a strong desire to fight against diet culture. You see food, I am about to enter the field of professional counseling and my hope is to help people understand you better and become less fearful of you. I want people to enjoy you and honor the body they live in, without being on a diet. I want that for myself and for others.

Though, as empowered as I feel, I am stuck. I have a hard time listening to people talk about you, diets, and weight. It makes me cringe and I don’t know how to address you in conversations in a respectful and knowledgeable manner. Unfortunately, the conversation of you and weight occur far too often. I usually just ignore what I am hearing and don’t get involved because I am scared of how others will react when I tell them I am on your side and that you are not the real problem. What do I say to them? How do I enter a conversation about you, body image, and scales when I am against the norm? How do we as Food Peace soldiers push back on diet culture on a daily basis? How do we respond to our family and friends when they sit and talk about you and restricting you? How do we help people understand that diets are so harmful to our bodies and that we deserve so much more? How do we help people see that Food Peace is possible and it does not include restriction or being on a diet?

I want so badly to tell the world that everything they have heard and learned about diets and you is a big lie. I want to help people find body acceptance and break free of the shame and guilt they feel around you, but I don’t know how. HELP!

Yours truly,

Stuck and Fed Up.

29 Feb 2016Ep 007: Wounded Eater Craving Normal Eating00:32:11

There's no such thing as a perfect eater so making mistakes is a part of normal eating. What if you were raised to believe larger bodies are disgusting or eating is to be controlled? Then what? When the mind and society expect eating perfection, how can someone become a normal eater? This week's letter writer asks food to help direct her to the path toward healing.

Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds.

Key Points:

  • The longest relationship we will have on earth is the relationship with ourselves. How we feed ourselves is important to our health and quality of life. Therefore our relationship with food is important to heal.
  • Nutrition science is a fluid science.
  • Another shout out to Ellyn Satter and her awesomeness. This time, we hear her definition of Normal Eating.
  • Hear how Julie defines Eating Disorder recovery and why she believes you can 100% recover!
  • Our family of origin's belief on size and food behavior can get in the way of normal eating. Normal eating includes mistakes and trusting our body. Teaching size discrimination will keep us from trusting our hunger and fullness cues. It teaches us to rely on dieting and disordered eating.
  • Disordered eating is society's normal eating *Julie pouts*.
  • Picking out 1 or 2 new foods to try each week will help your brain and taste buds get more comfortable with normal eating.
  • The only FDA approved medications for eating disorders are foods.
  • Looking to become a normal eater? Find other normal eaters! And, it may impact your family and friends to also become normal eaters.
  • Patience and acceptance will help you move forward to healthy normal eating.

Dear Food,

I know you and I still have work to do, but I'm writing today to talk to you about your relationship with my dad (hope you don't mind!). He knows so much about you, and he's tried so many diets and plans, but he just can't stick with eating in a healthy way. He's had a number of health problems related to his weight and diet, and has to take about a dozen prescription pills a day to address his GI issues. He says he wants to change, and wants to take better care of himself - but for years now, he and our family have watched helplessly as the motivation wanes after a week or two, disappears for months, and then shows back up full-force. It's been exhausting for everyone to see this cycle over and over again. He even has the self-awareness to see what works for him, what doesn't, why he might be giving up, what psycho-emotional factors are at play - but all that self-reflection doesn't turn into action (and he knows that, too!) He's even joked that he feels "possessed" when he binges on sugar and snacks, or that his brain and his tongue aren't communicating, and that "it's time to go back on that plan again."He and the rest of us thought that after he had to be hospitalized for the GI issue, it would be enough motivation - but he went back to old habits quickly. We've tried cooking together, affirmations, journaling, listing all the great things that will come with healthy eating. He's seen nutritionists and psychologists, he's tried meditating and going to the gym. But even with the support, motivation, experts, and health care professionals, he hasn't been able to make the changes and progress he wants. Now, his first grandchild is on the way. We love him, we don't want to be intrusive - he's asked for us to help. But we feel powerless, and defeated that we can't help. Food - is it time for him (and us?) to work with a professional? How do we know where to start, and what kind of specialist to look for? He hasn't been diagnosed with an eating disorder - will he need a doctor referral? Will this be another expense and ray of hope that goes nowhere? He wants to heal, and we want to see him love himself as much as we love him.

Love, Concerned Daughter

04 Jan 2018I have to diet with PCOS...right?!? Let's explore PCOS + Food Peace.™ {PCOS Bonus Episode}00:24:20

Sign up now to get on the waitlist for the next enrollment period in later this month, and receive my FREE road map: Your First 3 Steps Toward Food Peace™ with PCOS. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how.

Product links may be affiliate. If you click and make a purchase, there's no extra cost to you.

Episode's Key Points:

  • What IS food peace and PCOS anyway? What if we've been told to eat this, not that, in order to manage our PCOS? How do we move away from that kind of thinking?
  • Do some of us end up engaging in anorexia nervosa trying to manage our PCOS? Yes! Especially if we're in larger bodies.
  • People in larger bodies are urged to practice eating behaviors that we diagnose as disordered in smaller bodies... this is a problem! It also points to how fatphobic our society is.
  • Dieting increases inflammation, which is one of the biggest issues with PCOS!
  • At least one in ten women suffer from PCOS, but there's minimal research funding for it. We need to get more information on this condition!
  • So what's food peace? Food peace is coming to terms that diets don't work for you, and understanding that diets are the failure, not you.
  • It's time to find a new way to eat, and listen to your bodies for the answers! Women with PCOS have a different kind of communication with their body, and it's my job to guide you through learning that mode of communication.
  • If you're in a place where you're struggling to manage your PCOS, you may feel like you're ALWAYS hungry. The food peace process is about reconnecting with your intuitive self and learning what that feeling of being always hungry really means.
  • Dieting predicts weight gain and eating disorders, and intuitive eating leads to positive health outcomes. So really, which one is better for our health?
  • Here's my PCOS and Food Peace Manifesto:
    • You didn't cause your PCOS!
    • Diets failed, not you! Diets are a form of restriction, so it's no wonder you feel like you can't control yourself around food.
    • Your weight doesn't define your health or your worth!
    • Your PCOS has its own language!
    • Notice what helps energize you, and what doesn't!
    • Self-care matters, and so does advocacy!
  • 25% of our health is due to behaviors, and 75% of our health are determined by social determinants of health and our genetics... this means that stigma and discrimination have a HUGE impact on our health! Specifically, weight stigma contributes to inflammation and poor health due to the fight or flight response.
  • There are SO many of us out there ready to help you fight weight stigma in PCOS healthcare. Come join us!

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear Food,

As a child, I never thought much about you. You were just the breakfast my mom made in the morning before she went to work. She put my brother and mine’s breakfast on a tray and lay it on her bed as she got ready. Usually you were something easy to make, eggos waffles smothered in syrup or scrambled eggs and ham with milk or orange juice. You were just the lunch my mom packed the night before - a sandwich filled with meat, cheese and mustard, chips, and sometimes a couple of chips ahoy cookies. Since my mom was a single working mother, my abuela would pick my brother and I up from school to take to her house until my mother was off work. We would be given vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup while we did our homework. FYI- my mother’s side is Cuban and if anyone hearing this is Hispanic they will understand that potatoes and rice are our vegetables. My abuela was an incredible cook and would always prepare some sort of meat with rice, black beans, and fried savory plantains she always made. My favorite meal was chicken fricassee- dark chicken meat, potatoes, olives, peas, and onion cooked in a flavorful tomato sauce. Looking back, I didn’t know much about you because I wasn’t able to explore you. You were just something that was put in front of me and I was told to eat. Every now and then we had some alone time when I went out with friends or to a drive through after I got my license. I came from a very frugal family, so our “dinner’s out” would be chick fil a, Panera, or Domino’s pizza.

It wasn’t until freshman year of college where we finally had alone time. Starting college, I was thin and felt good about my body. As the year went on, I was overwhelmed with having free access to all the foods I love on my meal plan. Chick fil a, Au bon pain, panda express, starbucks, and food halls filled with candies, chips, ice cream and more. I stuffed my face with you thinking nothing of it while I went out drinking 4 times a week. Nights out usually ended with late night eating with friends. By the time spring break came, I realized just how much damage you had done to me. My clothes were tighter, my stomach was bigger, and my face had filled out a lot. I didn’t look like myself.

When I went home that summer, I made a pact with myself that I would work out and eat healthy. I wanted to see what my healthiest body would look like. I wanted girls to envy me and boys to desire me. I started to run every day and do a workout video off youtube. I stopped drinking for a month. I did a ton of research on healthy eating. Food, you changed into something I ate to give me the body I became obsessed with having. You changed to a form of rules that has damaged the way I see you even now. I ate cooked chicken and 99% lean turkey with no oil and only cayenne because I feared olive oil would make me fat. I only ate fruit in the morning because I read that the sugars metabolize differently in the afternoon. I only dressed my salads in balsamic vinegar because of the high calorie grocery store dressings. When you became these rules, the way I viewed everything changed. I was addicted to the praise I received when I got results, and didn’t see anything wrong with what I was doing because I was certain it was “healthy”. I had a boyfriend that summer who knew about my obsession with eating healthy. Every now and then, him or his family took me out to nice dinners where I allowed myself to eat and drink whatever I wanted. But that’s when it goes dark. Instead of being present, I would obsess over the food in front of me. I would eat past the point of full because I saw it as my only time to have this “unhealthy” food. I would be having a conversation, but I was really thinking about the eating everything and anything I could get my hands on while I could. Even after dinner, I’d drive out to cvs to get my favorite ice cream or candy. After these episodes I was convinced people could see the food I ate on my body. People noticed this cycle and I’ve received a few comments that my motto seemed to be all or nothing when it came to you, food. The next day after my binge, I’d feel so guilty and ashamed and I would go back to only eating healthy and working out until the next episode. I didn’t realize this cycle would stay with me for the next five years.

Of course,  our relationship has slightly changed over those years- I’m 24 and in my first two years of the working world. When my nutrition journey first started, I did grow to love fitness but now that I’m not active throughout the day at a desk job- my body is a little heavier than it was in college. I constantly aim to go back to the super skinny and fit shape I used to be in. I do my best to eat healthy and meal prep every week. I think about food constantly and often create meal plans and recreate them when I’m at work. Every now and then I try to convince myself I’m okay and I can have that piece of chocolate if I want it. But everytime I have a bite of something “unhealthy” it triggers a binge cycle and I find myself checking out at the grocery with sweedish fish, sour patch kids, and oreos. I kill myself at the gym six times a week. I’m constantly buying meal plans and fitness plans that promise amazing results. I stick with it a few weeks and then get frustrated when I don’t see immediate results. I go from having faith in myself to do it on my own to finding a new and shiner plan that will get me there. My binge episodes have become more frequent in a week and I’m sick of it. Now I have the same feeling I did my freshman year- I don’t recognize this body and I’m constantly torturing it.

Food, you’re taking over my life. When will this end? Aren’t you sick of this like I am? How can we get to a point where I feel safe with you no matter what?

Sincerely,

Exhasted

25 Sep 2018(128) I'm afraid of relapse while raising my kids.00:25:20

Are you caught up in the mania that is motherhood? Do you find yourself feeling fatigued when it comes to making decisions regarding your kids' food choices? Does it feel as if your own relationship with food is being challenged? You're in the right place. Julie Duffy Dillon provides a heart-to-heart on this rewarding, but often exhausting stage.

Episode's Key Points:

  • Parenting often triggers many forms of stress.
  • Finding ways to complete tasks in more efficient ways can help relieve some of this anxiety.
  • If you have a history of an eating disorder or disordered eating, you may find these old behaviors and ways of coping return as you are dealing with the challenges of parenthood.
  • Eating for comfort and emotional eating are both very normal human ways of coping.
  • It is not the food choices that are concerning but rather the self-shaming thoughts and feelings we have around the choices we make. When these thoughts come up, call them out for what they are and provide self-compassion.
  • Connecting with a therapist provides a safe space to process your concerns.
  • Gather support from fellow mothers and intuitive eating mom experts.

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear food,

I’m 32 and I’ve only just started listening to my thoughts/emotions and how my eating patterns are effected.

If I’m not feeling good enough, when I’m dumped by a boyfriend, ignored or shut out by a person then I binge eat. I’m so sad that I go straight for the whole tub of ice cream and a whole bag of chips etc...

If I’m worried or stressed then I have no appetite and forget, or just cannot physically eat.

I would love to take charge of my emotional eating as it causes me to feel sluggish, heavy, I don’t know why I do it because it doesn’t make me feel better. I would really like to take control of my emotional eating. As I understand it I have to tackle my emotional connection to food which is triggered by not being good enough.

I’m early in this and looking forward to learning more about other people’s journeys which will support me on my own.

Many thanks,

Trapped Emotional Eater

21 Aug 2017I can't get rid of the urge to binge eat {Ep 084 with Isabel Foxen Duke}00:31:23

Do you feel like you've done everything to tackle your struggle with binge eating? Is there a constant battle in your head over cravings? Listen now to hear some solutions on how to overcome this food peace struggle.

Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds.

This episode is brought to you by my FREE roadmap: Your First 3 Steps Towards Food Peace with PCOS. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how. Join our Facebook group to get extra support!

Episode's Key Points:

  • The recovery process is NOT linear, and it takes TIME.
  • Isabel Foxen Duke joins to talk about dieting, bingeing, and more!
  • Physical restriction is NOT THE SAME as emotional and psychological restriction... even if you're eating "enough," bingeing can still occur if you feel mental restriction. Diet mentality is the bigger thing to break down when trying to break free from bingeing!
  • Cravings are neutral things!! We don't need to feel shame about them.
  • Emotional eating and binge eating are two different things! Emotional eating is when we eat something in order to make ourselves feel better. It's a coping mechanism to distract, comfort, soothe or avoid a feeling. Binge eating, on the other hand, is a reaction to the diet mentality. Isabel calls is reactionary eating! For example, when you tell yourself you can't have "x" food, all you want is "x" food, and then it results in a binge.
  • Food is never black and white!
  • Just because we think we're eating "enough," we actually may not be because we live in a restrictive, diet-culture world.
  • Diet mentality tells us that there's a right and wrong way to eat. Giving up dieting is giving up an attitude around food that categorizes certain food behaviors as safe and others as unsafe.
  • "The Don't Binge Eat Diet:" when you're desperately trying to avoid and overcome the urge to binge, which only perpetuates a binge. Think about a bow and arrow... the farther back you pull the bow and the more tension your build, the farther that bow will fly in the other direction when you inevitably let go!
  • There's NOTHING wrong with emotional eating!! The only reason why people fear emotional eating is because we fear getting fat.
  • Emotional eating turns into a binge when we decide that the action we're doing is not okay and feel shameful about it.
  • Quitting dieting doesn't just mean you've put down the calorie counts and the weight loss goals... it means we leave behind the "right" and "wrong" with food.
  • When we struggle with food, we have to ask, where is the restriction happening?? Where is the diet mentality hiding?
  • Not dieting is a physical AND emotional issue! 90% of recovering from dieting is about the diet mentality and diet attitudes, and only 10% of it is about the physical.
  • If you are clinging to ANY kind of wagon, you will inevitably fall off!
  • Permission to binge is step one!!
  • It's time to overcome emotional restriction.
  • You have permission to be where you are right now, and to meet your needs in however you need to.

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear Food,

I have battled with you for almost three years now. This weekend actually marks one year of choosing recovery. Choosing to fight Anorexia Nervosa was the best decision I have made, but I did not realize it was going to be so hard and long. I was a senior in high school when I began recovery, but I knew no matter what I HAD to go to college. My parents talked about me taking a gap year in between high school and college to focus on my relationship with you, but that is not the usual in my small town. Thankfully, I am in college now at a university just down the road from my house. I thought my battle with you would be completely over once I left home, but honestly it has just gotten worse. Living on my own means making my own meals and keeping myself accountable. Diet culture is so loud here; I feel like I find you to be a part of every single conversation. It makes me feel hopeless in such a challenging and lonely environment. The school gym is just steps from my dorm—I usually find myself there after a bad meal with you or a hard exam. Why do you attack specifically college students? College is already difficult and adding fear of food and fatphobia makes it even harder. I know it is not just me too that has this struggle, but no one speaks out about it. I am at a loss of how to keep motivation and pushing forward in such a challenging community.

Sincerely,

Confused College Freshman

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear Food,

I am not sure if you and I can ever have a peaceful relationship. Lately, I am exhausted with recovery and the daily struggles of trying to eat intuitively, feeling like I am failing, and wanting to change my body. It feels like there is too much stress in my life that I do not have any energy left to try to go against the mainstream's ideas on food and dieting that on bad days I wish that I had never heard of intuitive eating and embarked on this journey.

I realized that we had a complicated relationship after reading Intuitive Eating for the first time. I bought it on a whim, looking for an end to the food and exercise tracking madness, but still desperately wanting to change my body. I wanted to teach myself the "right" way to eat. I thought I was doing well, eating intuitively, and generally feeling at peace. This was until it was pointed out to me that I was following the "intuitive eating" diet, and this realization launched a pretty steep decline in my recovery. I know that the behaviors I had were not healthy and that at one time I realized that I needed help with them. But since I am not able to separate Intuitive Eating with the "intuitive eating" diet, I am so confused and apprehensive to try to re-learn it. Was everything I had learned the last 3 years completely wrong and how could I have missed the mark so much? Part of me wants recovery and the other part of me knows it will continue to be very challenging and I do not feel like I have it in me to stay on this path. I don't think I can go back to how I was before, but I continue to be in what feels like a half-recovered space. Working through my disordered food behaviors illuminated that I have a lot of personal trauma and feelings that I was using disordered behaviors to cover up and deal with. As I work through those, I notice the disordered food behaviors creeping back in like an old friend, wanting to help me cope.

I realize diet culture is everywhere. And because it is everywhere, I feel exhausted by constantly defending my position to people and not giving in to the allure of what I know now to be another diet. My extended family gatherings that involve food consist of comments about amounts of food, "good/bad" food, needing to "work off" the food, or some special ingredient that will save us all from disease. Yoga has been a refuge but walking into the studio I might read a flyer for a weight loss cleanse, overhear conversations about diets, hear body negativity from other yogis and even some of the teachers. I attended a yoga teacher training informational session, thinking it would be a good challenge for myself to take my yoga practice to a new level and left feeling completely defeated after learning that one of the training modules was around "how to eat like a yogi". Sharing my own baked treats with co-workers inevitably invites a litany of body and diet comments as well as their own personal justifications for eating or not eating the food I brought. I created an Instagram account for my dog because I thought it would be a fun way to share the funny things he does. Do you know how much diet culture permeates instagrams about dogs? A lot. I cannot shut off the continuous diet culture that is everywhere in my life. Something has to change.

Perhaps I am not fully on board with Intuitive Eating and HAES and that there are still pieces of diet culture I am hanging on to. All I know right now, food, is that I am mad. I am mad that I know that my food behaviors aren't healthy for me but that I want to keep doing them because it felt like I was in control. I have so much shame for having this problem at all that I can hardly admit it to myself. I justify this by fully embracing that I hate my body and that, of course, then the disordered eating makes sense. I am so tired of starting over with different therapists, finding yet another book that I put my salvation into, hoping that, yes, maybe this one will click and I will magically love my body and I will become a true Intuitive Eater. Will I ever feel normal around you, food? Will I ever want to take care of my body instead of punishing myself for making a mistake at work, getting into an argument with a loved one, or accidentally reading a diet message on a magazine cover and feeling self-loathing? Can I enjoy you, food, without feeling an intense desire to want to exercise or restrict later? Can I trust you, food, knowing that my IBS may cause days or weeks of intense intestinal pain and fear of you, food? Will I be able to go to my doctor and not be completely obsessed for weeks after accidentally seeing my weight (and shame for feeling good that it was lower than what I thought)? It all feels too much, and I feel entirely un-grounded. I realize that this letter is even contradictory, stating that I wish I could have my old food behaviors back and also knowing that I have learned and made progress. I am just not sure, food, that I am on the right path, or even what the right path is.

Sincerely,
Wanting to Check Out

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear food.

I am so happy to be embracing you again. After months, years even, of tight, stifling restriction I have welcomed you back with much more open arms. I have defined and then found 'healthy enough' for me. The thing is, I am concerned now with something completely different. My partner of 10 years who on the outside looks the picture of health is choosing types of you that I can't help but worry about.

He sends me to the shop most days to buy cartons and packages of you that I know, while they have a place in a balanced diet, aren't the best for him when eating so regularly and without the fruit and veggies, etc.

This puts me in a tricky place, food. The very last thing I want to do is restrict him in any way or be even a little bit judgemental. I don't think he's got disordered eating of any kind. I simply think he doesn't prioritize his health as much as I do. Which is fine. Bodily autonomy. But I can't help worrying. He has a family history of diabetes and I think because he is in a socially accepted body, I think he thinks he's protected.

This letter makes me sound like a horrible girlfriend. Maybe I am. What I really crave is a long and happy and healthy life together. How can I approach you, food, in relation to my relationship? Is it possible for someone to feel so much peace with food - too much peace - that they just don't care? How do I help him care? Can I help him? Should I mind my own business?

Love, Dreaming of his health.

NEW PODCAST ALERT

Be sure to check out, support, and SUBSCRIBE to the Demystifying Diversity Podcast with hosts Daralyse Lyons and AnnaMarie Jones. The trailer has me hooked and can't wait to hear more. I have a feeling you'll love this podcast too.

Dear Food:

I’ve been a listener to this podcast for a while now and it has been a helpful resource as I’ve worked on my own recovery from bingeing and restricting along with repairing my own body image. This year I began teaching at a new school and a teacher on my team has been a big trigger for me. She’s a former gymnast/power lifter and she often talks about her body and fat people in a really disparaging way. It started in the beginning of the year when she wouldn’t eat meals. Then it continued as she would talk about how disgusting she thought her body was. This year she had a miscarriage and later shared her PCOS diagnosis with me and how frustrating it is for her that she gains weight so easily.
Since quarantine has begun she’s been heavily into weight loss and has dropped 25lbs in the 3 months we’ve been in quarantine. I unfollowed her on social media but I still have to attend video calls with her where she tends to bring up her weight loss and about how disgusting she was before in her already thin body. I mentioned my concern to work friends that have worked with her before, and it sounds like she’s lost weight really rapidly before using diet pills and not eating consistently. They did not seem as concerned as I was.
I recognize that I cannot change anything she does, and truthfully I consider her a friend outside of this issue. We’re all on a team together so it would be far more difficult to not get along with her. That said, being around her and having to do video calls with her where all she talks about is weight loss and dieting (even after I’ve  asked her not to) has been really triggering for me.
At this point, I don’t think she’d be receptive to anything I have to say especially because I do have a fat body and I’m worried she’s going to only hear my concerns as jealousy of her thinness. At one point i asked her to not send me her weight loss updates anymore and she gave me a not so sincere sorry.
How can I continue my own journey of recovery while I have to be in close contact with someone who hasn’t even begun to realize they might have a problem? Over the summer I can hopefully take a break but I’m still worried about maintaining the friendship I have with my team while also trying to avoid her? I see an eating disorder dietitian and I used to work with an eating disorder therapist, but this has been a new problem.
I know I don’t need to be thin to be healthy. I’m really proud of the healthy relationship I’ve built with food and permission and I have made strides in finding non-weight related motivation to consistently exercise. I just worry continued exposure to her fat phobia and rapid weight loss will cause me to spiral back only focusing on losing weight.
Thanks for reading.
Sincerely,
Don’t Want to Go Back

23 Oct 2017My health keeps me from Food Peace {Ep 93 with Anna Sweeney}00:25:55

This episode is brought to you by my online course, PCOS and Food Peace. Sign up now to get on the waitlist for the next enrollment period in January 2018, and receive my FREE road map: Your First 3 Steps Toward Food Peace with PCOS. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how.

Episode's Key Points:

  • Come find me at FNCE!
  • Trying to heal our relationship with food while struggling with a health condition can be SO hard! Too many health conditions tangle up weight with health, and this can make food peace EVEN HARDER to achieve.
  • Anna Sweeney joins us to talk about finding food peace with a chronic health condition!
  • We're allowed to love food!! Food is AWESOME, and we're supposed to love it!
  • Watch kids eat to see a purely intuitive, blissful experience with food.
  • Having a positive experience with food is often met with concern, and THAT is the problem, NOT your love of food!
  • We're told that we shouldn't trust our body from a young age... but that isn't true! Our body WANTS us to be successful humans, and it's NOT trying to sabotage us.
  • We need to move away from this fear mongering space around food and body.
  • It's time to unlearn diet culture in order to recover from disordered eating!
  • ANY body that's not being appropriately nourished (including satisfaction!) is super likely to have difficult gastric experiences. So it isn't about changing our diet... it's about making peace with food! The only way to heal our gut is with appropriate nutrition.
  • Following any sort of diet DISCONNECTS us from our internal wisdom. The body lets us know what feels good and what doesn't!
  • Choose your un-teachers wisely.

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear food,

I’ve loved the last 8 months after finding intuitive eating and going on my non diet ‘adventure’, it’s helped me find peace with myself and explore food in a different way. I still am working on it and am not perfect, I’m learning every day and slowly learning to love my body and treat it with the compassion it deserves.

My partner and I have been trying to have a baby for the last two plus years and have been doing fertility treatments (including ivf) for the last year.

My fertility issues really started my journey into non- dieting after my quest to have a baby sent me trying every weird and wonderful diet and ultimately I hit diet rock bottom.

I’ve been a dieter most of my life but feel like it really spiralled when trying to conceive, I found intuitive eating after not feeling like I could embark on yet another diet.

Reading everything  online about what you should and shouldn’t eat when trying to conceive was a downward spiral, I tried everything and anything (all which didn’t work!). Infertility really is an emotional mind fuck (excuse the language).

Now that I’ve found the non diet approach I try to treat myself with love and compassion, but all of the ‘research’ out there tells you to go keto or dairy free or eat pineapple or [focus on weight loss] etc how do I nurture myself when tying to conceive while following the non diet approach?

Thanks

Struggling with infertility

Dear Food,

This is a much needed conversation... I know exactly when our story started to get a little... complicated.

It all started a little bit more than a year ago, I was only 14 (yes, right now I am just 15 and a half ). I know exactly why it started: I compared myself to one girl in my class... She was a gymnast, and really muscular. I was just getting to high school and I admired her body. I've always been considered as a "skinny girl", but at the time I started hating my thighs (by the way, I still do...). That same year, I started being more active and I thought that my thighs needed to be slimmer.

Then, I started to do some research on my own by listening to podcasts, watching youtube videos, reading... I did abs every mornings.
I also decided that I wanted to eat "healthy" and I thought that I had to reduce you Food a little bit... I didn't starve myself, I was too scared and too aware for this, but I had some "rules": no bread, no dairy, no dessert everyday, no snacks.

At the same period of time, I lost my period, to this day we (doctors, my mother and I) still don't know what caused it because I didn't lose a lot of weight, just X kilos.

I didn't restrict but something else started: bingeing. And here is my problem, sweetie. I found, and I still do, get so much comfort through you. I was thinking about you all the time, even in holidays, in school, wherever. It gets a little better when I am busy but I still love you so much...

Now, I am much more aware about nutrition, especially gentle nutrition... I eat when I am hungry but sometimes, and it is still very often, I just don't want to stop eating. And I know exactly why: when I am with you, this is my break from school, or a moment with a friend and family and I don't want to get back to reality and to face my "responsibilities" (as a 15 years old teenager, of course). That's why I binge on you. To be honest, I have only felt a few times the real feeling of "I cannot stop eating": I couldn't do anything and I would eat and eat and eat (processed sweet food that I usually don't eat) and then feel so bloated, having heart palpitations and being mentally down. I really don't know how to heal from bingeing on you... The most stupid thing in all of that is that I know why I binge on you and I am aware a lot of things about nutrition but I feel so trapped.. I know you don't want to hurt me but I don't know how to behave with you.

With love, hope it will get better between us

(I apologize by advance if there are some mistakes: I am french :))

13 Mar 2017LF 061: I feel stuck choosing between recovery and healthy eating.00:22:48

Listen now for some answers on how to overcome this difficult hurdle to making peace with food and your body.

Episode's Key Points:

  • Part of recovery and healing our relationship with food and our bodies is making peace with our body shape and size, no matter where it may fall. This can be a super difficult part of the process, especially for people who end up in fat bodies because we live in an extremely fat-phobic society!!
  • Prescribing diets for long-term weight loss just DOESN'T work!
  • How do we learn to accept and respect our body in a world that doesn't treat all bodies with kindness?
  • Food peace means learning to be flexible, compassionate, and accepting.
  • We have to learn to trust our hunger and fullness cues, along with our satisfaction levels. But when we learn to let go and trust out internal regulation to tell us how much food we need to eat, we also have to let go of our hopes to control our body size.
  • Sometimes intuitive eating results in a body size that is larger than the culturally "accepted" standard. This whole idea of "too large" and subscribing to the thin ideal is a huge no-no, as we can all achieve health at any size, but this judgment from others can be a huge barrier to food and body peace!
  • Pursuing weight loss and a smaller body is part of what leads to eating disorders.
  • Eating disorders kill someone every 23 hours.
  • You don't have to experience an eating disorder in order to be given permission to trust your body's hunger and fullness cues!
  • Unfortunately, trusting our bodies and having a peaceful relationship with food is NOT a normal occurrence these days.
  • Dieting is disordered eating!!
  • PCOS and disordered eating go hand in hand... some people with PCOS end up in a larger body due to insulin levels, and part of the common "treatment" involves weight loss. BUT not everyone with PCOS is in a fat body, so why do we use weight loss as a primary treatment??
  • If you're trying to deal with doctors while in a fat body, a great question to ask is, "What would you tell a thin person suffering with the condition I've come in here to talk about?" This way you won't just get the standard "lose weight" directive, and you may actually get some quality healthcare that doesn't focus on weight!
  • Pursuing weight loss is one of the most unhealthy mindsets we can have. The more we pursue weight loss, the more we will weigh, and the more at risk we are for an eating disorder.
  • It's time we challenge our weight bias!! It's easier for us to change the culture than to ask fat people to lose weight.
  • Focusing on recovery, rather than weight loss, will help with people dealing with PCOS.
  • I will be launching a special PCOS, food peace course in September!!!
  • Did you know that on average it takes meeting with five different counselors before you meet your perfect therapeutic match?? Keep looking for your best therapist!
  • Online courses can also be a great supplementary support resource, and there are a ton popping up!
  • Can we pursue body and food respect for our children?? So often we pass body hate onto our kids.
  • Over 70 studies show that intuitive eaters have healthier bodies and remain at more stable weights than dieters. Intuitive eating helps people come back to health!
  • If we work towards respecting our bodies, our size will level out at a place that is most comfortable for the individual.
  • Our next episode of the Love, Food Podcast will feature Evelyn Tribole, co-author of Intuitive Eating!
  • Surround yourself with more people who will support your body peace journey!!
  • All bodies are good bodies, and all bodies deserve to feel at home in their skin.

16 Oct 2017I'm recovering yet fat so why do I have to eat so much? {Ep 92}00:19:19

Does the journey to food peace just feel too long? Have you been struggling to the point that it feels like it's time to give up? Does thinking about food just make you tired? Are you struggling to make sure you eat enough every day? Listen now for some insight into this part of the food peace journey.

This episode is brought to you by my online course, PCOS and Food Peace. Sign up now to get on the waitlist for the next enrollment period, and receive my FREE road map: Your First 3 Steps Toward Food Peace with PCOS. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how.

Episode's Key Points:

  • Food can be boring. Sometimes eating can be a chore, and eating decisions can be exhausting, especially in recovery.
  • Permission, self-care, and just "being" are things that the recovery journey forces us to get familiar with. But they can be challenging, and this boredom and exhaustion around food can be a sign that you are struggling with those parts of food peace.
  • Recovery is like an upward spiral... it can sometimes feel like you're going backwards, but that just means you're about to make a breakthrough.
  • Continue to work on grounding yourself in ALL aspects our your life, not just with food! Use a barometer check to check in with your body throughout the day. Do you feel tired, anxious, or unhappy?
  • Remember, eating disorders are NOT about the food! It's an indicator to us that a need isn't being met.
  • What is our body trying to tell us???
  • Our brains have neuroplasticity!! This means we can change our brains to alter our habits.
  • Remember self-compassion in this process! Eventually, your mind and body will reconnect on its own.
  • Sometimes the exhaustion is related to decision fatigue. Try to conserve your energy for the important, life altering questions!
  • How are our experiences with food replicating our experience in other areas of our lives?
  • Try CBT in conjunction with this embodiment practice!
  • Remember, you may not always have the answer... and that's okay!!

Thank you for you supporting the Love Food Podcast!

Dear Food,

Dear food,

You have been a big part of my life for more than 50 years, comforting me in pain , sharing life successes with me .  I grew to love and hate you as a child and adolescent, and my struggles with restricting you have continued throughout my life. I have tried to control  you to have a smaller body and yet it has never been maintainable as I have always eaten more of you to end up at a higher weight  and larger clothing  size. The last 2-3 years the up and down body size roller coaster we have been on has slowed down and this body that I have now has been more or less the same size , but I am not happy with it and still long to walk into a clothing store and find a variety of clothes that fit me.

Instead I hate shopping and always end up eating more of you or  comfort versions of you to stop the pain and shame I feel not being able to find clothes that fit.  It doesn’t help to live in Spain as I find larger sized clothing is even harder to find. I have gained and lost the same number of  lbs over and over but always come back to this weight, and body size, and I still deal with choices of you daily . I must eat too much of you which I think contributes to my maintaining this larger  body and yet the portions of you and the exercise I do should add up to having a smaller body.

This year I found the intuitive eating book and am working through the workbook. I am also finding more and more health at any size websites and support groups. I am learning to stop eating when I am full and I am not binging anymore for years now, and I exercise regularly . For my 61 years I am in pretty good shape but I just struggle with finding clothes I feel comfortable in and wish for a smaller sized body , and not the hard to find size that I wear now.

I also feel that the aches and pains I have daily with this body would be less with a smaller body and I would have more energy, and my doctors have told me repeatedly to drop weight  every time I go to an appointment . I am having knee replacement surgery soon and this body size concerns me.

Anyway Food, I seem to be stuck here and not sure how to work with you so I can lower my body size, I don’t have visions anymore of being a super model or an unrealistic size. I just want to be able to buy clothes easier and feel better in what I wear, and have a healthier body image.

I am  not obsessed with your details and watching your calories anymore or tracking you as I have been for  years but instead trying to eat just enough of you, enjoying your taste and not restricting myself . I know I need you to give me nutrients and keep me alive, so this relationship is lifelong,

I would just like to find a balance with you and this larger body I have.

love

Still Dreaming to be Smaller

13 Feb 2017LF 057: I had gastric bypass surgery + food is still complicated. It's worse.00:18:15

057 Image

Do you live with so much body shame that you've contemplated stomach surgeries such as gastric bypass? Are you someone who has already undergone this surgery? Has this surgery only made things with your body more confusing? Do you also deal with PCOS or other complicated health conditions that push weight loss for health? Are you a professional within the dietetics field who also deals with food and body issues? Listen now for some solutions on how to navigate with these various challenges.

Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds.

Key Points:

  • Exciting announcement! In September I will be launching my very first online course, dedicated to people who are trying to find food peace while living with PCOS. Sign up for my newsletter to get updates!! And if you deal with PCOS and struggle with food and your body, I want to hear from you! Send me an email at LoveFoodPodcast@gmail.com, and let me know what you'd love to see in the course.
  • Dealing with all of these issues related to food is exhausting! Struggling with shame, acceptance, an eating disorder, and much more takes so much energy.
  • You are not a sham, but bariatric surgery as a solution to food peace is a sham.
  • Bariatric surgery is a stomach amputation. It does not have any documented long-term health outcomes, and we do NOT have enough data at this time to suggest that this surgery is a choice that will enhance personal wellness.
  • In any health profession it's important to have size diversity! Fat dietitians, fat gym teachers, and fat healthcare providers are important. If you want to hear more about this topic, check out Love, Food Episode 8 with Glenys Oyston.
  • Many people who choose to study nutrition that have an eating disorder background pursue it because they hope it will help them learn more about food for the sake of their eating disorder, not because they actually want to be dietitians.
  • Recovery from an eating disorder requires a great recovery team!
  • It is so, so common for dietitians and dietitians in training to seek out their own dietitian. If privacy is an issue, many practitioners work online now as well!
  • Question whether or not being a dietitian is for you! It's possible that when you find recovery, it may not be something that speaks to you anymore. This can be a hard decision, but you will get through it!
  • Research and data on how to help people who have had bariatric surgery recover from an eating disorder is sparse because it's a new experience, but it is becoming more common, and there are definitely practitioners out there who can help.
  • REJECTING weight loss is going to be an essential part of the healing process! One cannot heal from an eating disorder while they pursue weight loss!!! When you seek out treatment, make sure your support team is weight neutral. You may even be able to find a Health at Every Size practitioner!
  • People are more likely to experience an eating disorder if they have PCOS.
  • It really isn't about food... it's about stigma, shame, and food lies.
  • Don't give body hate more power!!

11 Sep 2024[Interview] Ozempic and other GLP-1 Practical Understanding: How do they work? With Megan Hadley00:11:21

In this conversation, Julie interviews Megan Hadley, a former pharmaceutical sales representative, about GLP-1 receptor agonists and their function in the body. Megan explains that GLP-1 receptor agonists work by increasing levels of GLP-1, a hormone that helps with insulin secretion and delays gastric emptying. She clarifies that these medications do not directly target fat cells and do not cause weight loss by melting fat away. Instead, they reduce appetite and food intake, leading to weight loss. Megan also discusses the potential side effects and challenges of using GLP-1 receptor agonists for weight management.

24 Sep 2024[Letter] Is food freedom even possible?00:29:56

Julie addresses the complexities of dieting, weight management, and the emotional turmoil associated with food relationships. She emphasizes the importance of understanding the dichotomy in how individuals perceive food, the impact of diet trauma, and the need for unconditional permission to eat. Julie introduces the concept of the pendulum to illustrate the chaotic nature of eating behaviors and encourages listeners to explore their own food voices as a means to achieve a healthier relationship with food. Ultimately, she advocates for a shift away from traditional notions of food freedom towards a more nuanced understanding of self-acceptance and joy in eating.

04 Sep 2018(125) I feel guilty when I eat (with Amanda Martinez Beck)00:29:32

Do you ever feel guilt for eating certain foods? Do you fear judgement about what other people will think about your body or food choices? Do you ever catch yourself labeling food "good" or bad?" Are you finding it difficult to feel at home in your aging body? Listen along to this week's episode as Amanda Martinez Beck helps provide meaningful reflection.

Episode's Key Points:

  • Special guest: Amanda Martinez Beck, co-host of the Fat and Faithful podcast
  • Typically, we feel shame when we feel as though we have failed at meeting some type of expectations.
  • When processing body shame, it is often helpful to turn the conversation to, "What is the purpose of my body?" and being able to shift our understanding of its purpose from being a means to control life's uncertainties to being a bridge of connection to other people.
  • Quote to live by: "All bodies are good bodies"--because all types of bodies can form connections with others.
  • Our aging bodies tell our stories and reflect ours and our ancestors' journeys.

Episode's Key Points:

*Content Warning: discussion of sexual abuse

  • Special guest Amy Pershing, licensed clinical social worker and founder of the Body Wise binge eating disorder recovery program and the Hunger Wise program as well as author of Binge Eating Disorder-The Journey to Recovery and Beyond.
  • Many individuals who experience eating disorders have a history of trauma.
  • Our culture has not recovered from its own eating disorder. When we are capable of making some steps forward in our culture's recovery from its eating disorder (and acceptance of all bodies), we can begin creating space to process our individual trauma so that healing can happen.
  • Trauma, particularly sexual trauma, makes an individual feel as though their physical being is not okay.
  • We must begin challenging cultural narratives that perpetuate body hate/fat phobia, such as that an individual's size predicts their health (spoiler alert: NOT true), in order to allow this trauma work to be able to take place.
  • Additionally, filter your environment/social media: "If an image makes you feel bad, don't consume it." ~Amy Pershing
  • Healing from an eating disorder includes honoring what the eating disorder/food behaviors has done for an individual's survival as well as adding tools, in addition to food, to one's toolbox for coping.

23 May 2016Ep 019: I work with food yet can't make peace with it.00:20:31

Making peace with food and body is tough work yet what if you work in the food industry? Is there a way to have a career that is food related AND learn how to heal? Julie thinks the struggle with food begins with the struggle with weight. Dive in and listen now for solutions for you.

Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds.

Key Points:

  • Julie and Jennifer McGurk will be speaking at FNCE 2016 on the Hidden Faces of Eating Disorders. Rebecca Scritchfield RD will be introducing us. Will you be there?? Stop by and say hi!
  • Having a job in the food industry, Julie included, can be taxing on our relationship with food. Julie calls it an occupational hazard. Be sure to enjoy time outside of activities around food. A therapist and dietitian can also help.
  • Struggle with accepting weight is fueling the obsession.
  • Julie was not shocked by the Biggest Loser New York Times study. The research results indicate we need to stop pursuing weight loss. Does that mean we let ourselves go? No. It means we let ourselves be.
  • What if your weight is not a problem??
  • "Weight becomes a problem because it is viewed as one." ⇠Julie LOVES this quote from Jonah Soolman.
  • What if you don't want to stay at your certain size? Unfortunately, we don't have a diet, plan, lifestyle change that promotes long-term safe weight loss for the majority. More exception than the rule. There isn't anything that will promote weight loss long-term.
  • Continuing to "work on it" or dieting will only harm health.
  • Those who work in the food industry, Julie is curious if your struggle with food and bad body thoughts brought you to this career choice. Body respect work may alter one's career choices??
  • How do you stop thinking about food? You can't since we need it as humans. First, make peace with the struggle and your current body size.

Summary

Food noise refers to constant food thoughts and the compulsion to eat, which may or may not be associated with physical hunger. 18 Sep 2017My chronic illness keeps me from making peace with food. {Ep 88 with Elyse Resch}00:31:15

Are you trying to find food peace, while also struggling with a chronic illness that requires food restriction of some kind? Do you have fear around certain foods making you sick? Have you struggled with the deprivation and binge cycle? Listen now for some strategies to tackle these food peace challenges.

This episode is brought to you by my FREE PCOS video training. Get connected now and be the first to get it when it releases in mid-September. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how. Join our Facebook group to get extra support!

Episode's Key Points:

  • Elyse Resch joins to talk about intuitive eating!
  • We all are the experts of our own bodies.
  • Feelings of betrayal from food and your body can make finding body trust and connecting with your internal wisdom that much harder.
  • Have self-compassion and gratitude for what our bodies CAN do!
  • Let's shift our thinking... instead of listing all the foods you CAN'T eat when you struggle with something like celiac disease, figure out all the foods you CAN eat.
  • Intuitive eating isn't JUST about flavor (Elyse calls it "the tongue")! It's also about tuning into how we FEEL when we eat certain foods.
  • Intuitive eating is a combination of instinct, feeling, and thought!
  • How do we use our body, education, taste, and intellect to help guide us in our choices?
  • Healthy eating includes pleasure and satisfaction!!
  • If we don't honor our hunger, we'll put ourselves in a situation where we're ravenous, and then we can't find satisfaction in our food. Likewise, if we eat without hunger present, food just doesn't taste as good! It's all about finding the middle ground with hunger.
  • Feelings of deprivation lead directly to bingeing!
  • Shifting our mentality can open the door to profound healing.
  • Dieting doesn't work!!
  • Lean into compassion... whatever we've done, we've done it because it's what we thought we needed to do at the time. It was a way to cope! We can't get mad at ourselves for doing our very best, even if it didn't turn out to be a sustainable path for progress.
  • Come from a place of curiosity, rather than judgment.

28 Nov 2016Ep 046: I'm convinced nothing will help me stop emotionally eating (with Ellen Shuman).00:31:05

ep-046-image

Are you someone who identifies with the emotional eating experience? Have you tried everything to work through emotional eating and bingeing, but still lean on food when things feel intolerable? Do the tools that everyone suggests to you to overcome these problems always seem to fall short? Listen now to get a new perspective and begin to find some relief from emotional eating.

Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds.

Key Points:

  • Sometimes we get convinced that nothing will work as good as food in allowing us to cope with our emotional issues.
  • How do we incorporate tools that just don't work with our lifestyle?
  • Eating for emotional comfort just doesn't make us happy in the long run!
  • Ellen Shuman, a therapist who does work specifically with people who struggle with emotional eating, joins us to help answer today's letter! She tells us about her journey to becoming involved in the eating disorder and emotional eating worlds.
  • "The Oprah Effect"
  • Ellen's "Emotional Handrails:" something to attach our mind to in order to tolerate the emotions long enough to figure out what is driving us to emotional eating.
  • It's not about food behavior, it's about being able to internally emotionally regulate!
  • "I've learned how to neutralize the things I'm saying to myself that really are distortions, and not really the truth." - Ellen
  • The whole point of eating emotionally is to be mindLESS, which is why mindFULL eating is such a hard goal for people who deal with emotional eating.
  • "First we learn how to tolerate our thoughts and feelings and to feel more empowered to manage those so [that] we're not so scared they're gonna overwhelm us." - Ellen
  • There are so many tools out there that work better!! It's about intervening BEFORE the food thought hits.
  • Conscious positive behavior replaces conscious negative behavior.
  • Ellen's "To Hell With it Switch:" that moment in which we abandon our promises to "do better" and instead engage in emotional eating to numb out.
  • What's the brain chemistry going on here?? What are the patterns of thinking that trigger our emotional eating?
  • Top brain (pre-frontal cortex) vs. bottom brain (primitive brain).
  • Use self-compassion and self-care to quiet your negative thoughts (middle-brain self-critical statements) that lead to emotional overeating!
  • "I am not my thoughts! Just 'cause I have a food thought doesn't mean I have to act on it." - Ellen
  • "Don't believe everything you think." - Dr. Wayne W Dyer
  • Ellen chats about her program, A Weigh Out which focuses on an end to emotional eating and weight obsession, her free phone seminar session, and the Weigh Out free 3-week membership.
  • If we work on the underlying issues and learn new tools to support our emotional management, then the food issues begin to resolve themselves.
  • Happiness and freedom from food obsession comes from being who we truly are, and working on our emotional coping tools.
  • You are WORTH putting in the effort and figuring this out. Stop blaming yourself... you haven't found the tools yet that work for you!
  • RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE!!

You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how. Join our Facebook group to get extra support!

Episode's Key Points:

  • Diets don't work for ANYONE! "Success" with diets is not the typical experience. So, now what?
  • Body image coach Summer Innanen joins to give us her insight!
  • Summer's body image coaching program, You, On Fire
  • Leaving the food rules behind can be really hard when you haven't built up your intuitive skills to know what you need to eat and how you need to move to feel good in your body.
  • Breaking out of the diet box can be scary!!
  • The transition from dieting to intuitive eating can be long and hard and awkward!
  • What are your next steps? Get rid of the scale and any trackers that make you hyper aware of your body size. You need to tune into what your body needs, not what your body looks like!
  • Go out and find clothes that help you to NOT think about your body and to help you to not fixate on any physical changes that might happen during this process.
  • When you start eating in a non-restricted way, you will probably start eating A LOT more than you think you should! You've been undernourished for so long, and your body needs to catch up. Plus, our perception of how much food we need to function like a normal human is SO skewed! Give yourself permission to eat as much as your body tells you to, even if it feels like too much, and be as compassionate as possible during the process.
  • You can't force balance!! It's about mental and physical wellbeing, and should be measured throughout your lifetime, rather than in short time spans. You can only see it in hindsight!
  • This is a process of UNLEARNING diet culture, and learning the language of body trust and intuition.
  • The whole world reinforces diet culture, and that makes this process even harder!
  • Food is food, and it doesn't deserve the power that we give it.
  • Body acceptance and exploring what your body size means to you is key! Still not liking your body is okay, but coming to a place of body neutrality can be so healing. The goal is just to not think about our body on a consistent basis!
  • We are untamable! Live your life outside of the diet cage.

  • Don't forget to subscribe to the show, and leave a rating and review. It's so important to leave a rating and review, as it helps people who are struggling with their relationship with food and body to find the podcast.
  • “A culture fixated on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty, but an obsession about female obedience. Dieting is the most potent political sedative in women’s history; a quietly mad population is a tractable one.” - Namoi Wolf, The Beauty Myth
  • We should all be raising our children as feminists.
  • Food IS political, and dieting IS political. We HAVE to talk about politics and feminism if we hope to dismantle diet culture and the patriarchy for good.
  • Diets have condemned certain body sizes, and they have distracted all of us from experiencing true joy in our lives and with food. Diets keep us from experiencing connection and joy with others! Diets tell us we aren't worthy of love until we're the "right" size. But none of the things diets tell us are true.
  • Diet culture pretends to be about health, and even has begun to feel like a religion. Diets have gone way too far.
  • Diets predict weight gain and eating disorders!
  • People who oppose diets, and the damage that they do, are coming together. The next generation of psychologists, dietitians, and health professionals will take diet culture down!!
  • We need to teach health professionals about weight bias and weight stigma. It's harmful to our health, even more-so than eating that french fry.
  • Diets are sneaky manipulators, so smart that sometimes we don't even know we're being manipulated.
  • It's time to engage in our politics, understand our privilege, and stand up to diet and body oppression. It's time for us all to feel more at home in our own skin, and to end the normalization of diets and fatphobia. See you in 2018!

This episode's Dear Food letter:

{CW: trauma, ED behaviors}

Dear Food,

I don't really know exactly when my relationship became complicated with you, or quite how it came to control my life. I remember when I was in my early teens, being the one to say diets are bullshit, and not thinking about what I ate. Being anti-diet culture was practically a part of my identity, and such is where my values sit today, but I live in complete contradiction.
At some point in my teens, I started restricted and using my vegetarianism to always choose the salad option at school. But it wasn't controlling, it wasn't overwhelming; it felt more like a natural reaction to being at an all girls school in the society that we live in - an image-based thing. Sometimes, it was reactionary, in spite of my (well-meaning) mother who would always tell me that 'soup is a starter not a meal', and check if I was eating enough despite her smaller portions. (I later learned she had a struggled with anorexia for years, and would still struggle to eat in times of stress.)

I developed anxiety and depression by age 16, which ruled and ruined my sixth-form life. Perhaps it was the exam stress, the family troubles - growing up with a drug abusing brother who was in and out of school, in and out of home, in and out of hospital (not that I was always told straight away). We had a complex relationship with my father, who always vied for my brother's attention and allegiance against my mother. I tried to be always neutral, always loving of all parties - because I was, and couldn't not be. But with this came a lot of pain, a lot of confusion, and the earnest desire to always tread this precarious, and often punishing line.  Of course, when I couldn't - and can't today - there is guilt. I was a straight A* student until the slump during my sixth form years, when my energy broke, and I scraped my way through the last 2 years. I used to be, and still feel like I should be, the person who was able to succeed at anything and everything without dropping the ball - but suddenly I could do nothing, and have struggled ever since. Around this time I realised there was probably something wrong - a cause. Through an explosive conversation with my mother, I was pushed to a consultation with a therapist and given the diagnosis - anxiety and depression - but didn't receive further help.

In my first year of uni I tried to access help myself, but was turned away by the uni counselling services after a few sessions, saying they didn't know how to help me as I had already thought everything through so much myself. It was in this year I had a few episodes of bingeing and purging. This continued around occasional periods of stress, such as exams, but not as a regular method of coping.

In second year, my mental health worsened. Restricting, binging and purging became a secret indulgence, but never something I saw as a problem as it was so sporadic. I had difficult relationships with my flatmates, though I had stronger friendships elsewhere, I felt alone. I became so ill I had to defer my exams. I worked towards the summer session, hoping I could somehow manage. But two weeks before I was due to take them, I was raped.

Utterly broken, I moved back in with my parents for a few months, during which time I tried to use food to console myself while I tried to process what happened. But when a close family member was admitted to hospital with terminal cancer, I began majorly restricting. When they passed away and my family fell apart, I moved back to my uni town and started a new job, trying to get my life back on track. Pretty much all the friends I thought I had were no longer there for me. I managed to access CBT for 9 weeks, but developed bulimia in an dramatic way, binging and purging at least 3 times in a day, at one time losing a stone in a month. This continued through another exam deferral, and another.

I fought for a year to access treatment, being passed from waiting list to waiting list, rejected for being too symptomatic, too complicated or not fitting criteria. Along the way, I met someone who truly loves me and cares for men and helps me through these struggles. When I am with him, I eat normally and don't purge, but will find myself in tears most evenings because of food. My weight is stable at a healthy BMI, but I am miserable in my skin, mentally exhausted, and absolutely terrified: of this relationship with food that dominates my life. I cannot have food around me and resist it, regardless of whether I am hungry - I am so anxious about when I might need to eat, that I am constantly aware of a hunger, and I cannot discern the emotional from the physical. I know I use bingeing and purging as both a means of occupying myself when I am alone, as an emotional control and as a form of self-harm. And what started as a tool has grown like a weed to something that I am constantly aware of, and bothers me even when I am happiest. I love to cook, and often cook with my boyfriend, but cannot enjoy a meal without resenting myself and being overwhelmed with frustration as a result.

In a month, I will finally be starting treatment (psychotherapy with a trauma focus), but I am worried about managing my relationship with food during this time, as I know it will be a gradual process, and not the focus of my treatment. Additional private treatment isn't easily an option for me. I am also worried about the strain I place on my boyfriend, who is always there for me, but who cannot fight the battle for me, no matter how much he may want to try.

I am trying to keep the willpower to fight for myself, to maintain the relationships I have left and succeed in my final chance to pass these exams in just a few months. I desperately need peace with you food, so that I can have more energy to make peace elsewhere in my life.

Yours,

Terrified & pleading for a truce

21 Mar 2016Ep 10 Bonus: Clean eating update00:13:51

I had to tape a bonus episode after some brand spanking new content became available for Episode 10's Guilty Clean Eater. If you identified with Episode 10's letter writer, know that we clinicians now have more to go on to help you feel more at peace with food.

Key Points:

  • Julie and Jennifer met up at the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals Symposium. They felt privileged to hear Dr. Steven Bratman speak on Orthorexia Nervosa with dietitians Amanda Mellowspring and Jessica Setnick. Dr. Bratman was the first person to describe the eating disorder obsessed with healthy eating. Yet, until now, it wasn't officially considered an eating disorder.
  • The presentation included the first official unveiling of the diagnostic criteria for Orthorexia Nervosa. Why does this matter? Julie and Jennifer discuss how this helps clinicians better treat this experience, promotes insurance coverage, and increases research funding.
  • Julie and Jennifer had a tough time getting technology to cooperate to make this bonus episode happen PLUS Julie knocked over a bottle of water on her chair just as taping started...so she had to sit in it the whole time. Gotta listen after all that!

29 Jan 2018I'm stressed and dieting. Help! {Ep 104 with Laura Thomas}00:29:56

Do you know dieting doesn't work, and yet you're finding yourself feeling drawn to dieting during times of stress? Are certain necessary food restrictions pushing you towards a deprivation mindset? Listen now while I discuss some strategies with Laura Thomas on how to manage this part of the Food Peace™ journey.

Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds.

This episode is brought to you by my online course, Your Step-by-Step Guide to PCOS and Food Peace™. Enrollment open until January 31st 2018. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how.

Product links may be affiliate. If you click and make a purchase, there's no extra cost to you.

Episode's Key Points:

  • You're not the failure... the DIET is the failure!
  • During stressful times, we may find ourselves drawn back to dieting, even though we know that it doesn't work long-term.
  • Laura Thomas joins us to break down this letter and to help the writer find some solutions!
  • Honor how far you've come! All progress is good progress, so be compassionate about how much work you've already done. Do your best not to be hard on yourself if you're not exactly where you want to be in this moment.
  • Remember, there's no way to do intuitive eating perfectly, and in fact, intuitive eating is about moving away from perfection around eating altogether.
  • Diet culture is deeper than food!
  • Kristin Neff's work around self-compassion might be really helpful in being kind to yourself in this process.
  • We can't eat mindfully at all times!! We can only be mindful of so many things at once, and we're busy people. We have lots to think about, so don't get down on yourself if some of your eating occurs when you're distracted.
  • Stress happens, and sometimes we have to make eating choices that don't add to our stress. Sometimes that means you might be grabbing convenience foods, and they might not make your body feel at 100%, but you have to prioritize things! You're doing the best you can. Take a multivitamin if you're concerned that you aren't going to get your nutrients through your current food choices.
  • In the long-term, work on the self-judgment and perfectionistic tendencies. In the short-term, go out and get convenient and filling snacks that fit in your budget (think peanut butter, granola, or hummus!).
  • Processed, frozen food is a tool in your food arsenal! Work on the judgment around those foods, and embrace them as an option in your life.
  • The most important thing to remember is that there's no such thing as a perfect intuitive eater! Having flexibility in your eating behavior will protect you against diet mentality, so embrace it. Take care of yourself the best you can.
  • Online community is important! In-person folks might not be on board with the anti-diet movement, but Instagram, podcasts, and other social media platforms can act as valuable support.

This episode's Dear Food letter:

Dear Food,

I've been obsessed with clean food in the past and always distinguish between "bad food and good food" Because of that I found myself in a binge and purge cycle all of the time. Now I have lost my control I gained XX in 5 months, and I feel anxiety, depression, I feel body dysmorphia. I'm sick with all of this. People around me don't understand and don't support me.

No support makes it so hard to recover and I don't know how and what I should do to recover. I have watched and read everything about eating disorders but they don't tell me specifically what to do.
I hope that you can help me to figure this out.

Sincerely,

Stuck and no where to go

Episode's Key Points:

  • Special guest Victoria Welsby from BamPowLife.
  • Dieting and making strides to lose weight and change your body in an effort to get the things you want in life (or to just simply be accepted) is the rule in our society rather than the exception
  • Research shows that those who embark on a dieting journey regain a significant amount of the weight lost within the first year and all or most of the weight back at year five. So what does this mean? Diets don't work.
  • Additionally, dieting frequently induces shame. Shame that isn't yours to carry as you don't fail at diets. Rather, the diets fail you and this shame burden belongs to our oppressive society.
  • Sometimes alcohol dependence coincides with one's eating concerns. However, it is important to separate these as while you can be addicted to alcohol, you cannot be addicted to food. You need food to live whereas your survival isn't dependent on alcohol. In addition, while you can have a "normal" physical and emotional relationship with food as you recover from disordered eating, you may not be able to have the same relationship with alcohol moving forward.
  • As you begin to heal, it is important to make space to honor how you've been coping and keeping yourself alive.
  • As you explore Intuitive Eating, it is common to feel like you are constantly battling your brain in the beginning. This is because your body has to learn to trust you again and know food is unconditionally accessible.
  • Be kind to yourself, be patient with yourself, and remove the shame as you begin your Intuitive Eating journey. It is challenging work and takes time.
  • Healing from internalized fat phobia is a huge part of this journey as well and means learning to feel at home in your body as it is now as there are no body size guarantees.
  • Fat bodies are "normal" bodies too. Connecting with those who live in fat bodies is an important step in healing your relationship with food and your body.
