/Film Daily is Back! Five Nights at Freddy's Box Office, Looking Ahead to The Marvels, and More
00:33:01
On the November 6, 2023 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film staff writer and box office analyst Ryan Scott to talk about the latest film and TV news.
Opening Banter: Thanks to the support of you all, the listeners, The /Film Show is once again /Film Daily! Starting today, we are immediately jumping back to doing the podcast five days a week. We’re going to try to stick to a loose pattern of talking about box office on Mondays, news on Tuesdays, doing a water cooler on Wednesdays, a group conversation/debate/list on Thursdays, and Fridays will be a floating day where we may feature an interview or talk about more big news that dropped throughout the week. I also want to get back into doing big spoiler conversations about major movie releases, so we’ll try to introduce those back into the mix as well and may shift the schedule around to accommodate those as needed. There’s a chance we might miss an episode here or there due to holidays or sickness or just life stuff happening, but we’re ramping back up in a major way.
The reason we’re able to increase the frequency of the show again is because of our ad partners, and because of listeners like you. So if you hear about a product or service that you’re interested in, it’s important to use the specialized web addresses that we provide, because it’s your way of telling our partners “/Film Daily sent me” and it keeps them interested in working with us, which will keep us able to continue making the show. So thank you all very much for listening, and I look forward to getting back in the groove with all of you.

On the November 7, 2023 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film editor BJ Colangelo to talk about the latest film and TV news, including the Echo trailer, Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, and the new Peanuts movie.
Any other R-rated properties you think Marvel should tackle? Thunderbolts, Armor Wars, Avengers sequels - they won’t do it with X-Men proper or Fantastic Four - maybe a new Punisher?
I saw a comment on an old Reddit thread where someone was arguing that there shouldn’t be any R-rated MCU movies aside from something like Deadpool, which doesn’t impact the ongoing narrative, because that rating makes it inaccessible to the kids who love these stories. Do you have any thoughts about that? (HP example)

Spoiler Discussion: The Mandalorian Chapter 21 "The Pirate"
01:29:43
On the March 29, 2023 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editorial director Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film editor Brad Oman and Star Wars expert Bryan Young get together for a spoiler-filled conversation about The Mandalorian Chapter 21, “The Pirate”
Feedback
Manuel:
One thing that always bothered me with Star wars, movie and tv shows alike, planets seems to always be one city basically. In the case of nevarro, about 30 people. But fans never seem to be bothered by this?
Cade in Iowa and Aaron Leicestershire, UK had the same thought, im gonna read Aaron’s email:
Big fan of the spoiler discussions. I listen to every one of them, much to my children's chagrin.. I just had a thought with regards to Grogu's escape from Coruscant. Bryan wrote up a great theory about Jar Jar Binks. I love this theory. … However, I did have another thought. A key part of Bryan's theory was that Jar Jar and Padme are the only 2 people that we've come across from Naboo with the means to help in this way and that were on Coruscant at the time. Padme was discounted for some very good reasons but.. there is another.. Could Sheev Palpatine, former Naboo senator, be behind this "escape"? It's feasible to me that most of the Jedi would not yet be aware of Palpatine's betrayal or that he was behind Order 66. It's conceivable then that Kelleran Beq might have reached out to him for help and, seeing an opportunity to ensnare this Jedi, Palpatine offers him a ship. Will we see in the next flash back we get that Beq has been betrayed by the person he thought was helping him? This would also put Grogu in the Empire's hands very early on which would explain how, when we meet him in the first episode of The Mandalorian, the Empire are aware of his existence and are actively hunting him and how he is able to be tracked with a tracking fob. It would stand to reason that the Empire had possession of him before he was either stolen or escaped hence why they enlisted Din to get him back.

Immaculate And Late Night With The Devil Both Set Indie Horror Records At The Box Office
E-mail: Phil from Germany wrote in a couple of weeks ago, and mentioned something in his email that I wanted to highlight here. He says: “The podcast keeps mentioning physical media and its recent bigger relevance than expected. Keep in mind that both DVDs and Blu-rays decay over time. Many of my untouched or barely touched DVDs from 20 years ago do not play completely anymore. My “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (still sealed) and “Veronica Mars” (played once before) collections only played half the episodes when I revisited these TV shows last year, and those were not the only ones. Blu-rays decay slower than DVDs, so going for those and creating backups seems to be the best way to keep the favorites available.

Listener e-mail: Lorenzo from Sarasota, FL, wrote in about our recent episode where we talked about our favorite vampire films. Lorenzo says “both of my favorite live-action vampire movies were mentioned, but my number 1 favorite vampire movie is actually an animated movie, and I wanted to give it a shout out: The Batman vs. Dracula.” He calls it “underseen and underrated,” and explains that though it’s set in the continuity of an animated series called The Batman that debuted in 2004, “the film is a standalone story that can easily also be enjoyed even without the context of the show.” He says it’s “atmospheric and creepy,” it stars Peter Stormare as the voice of Dracula, and it even gives us Vampire Joker, with Tom Kenny’s Penguin basically filling the Renfield role and delivering comedy gold throughout.”

Universal
First footage from Wicked looked expensive - huge scale with some of the biggest practical sets. Jon M. Chu said they planted 9 million real multi-colored tulips in one set.
Fast X: Part Two will hit theaters sometime in 2025. Vin Diesel claims Fast franchise is the longest running franchise with the same actors?
Kung Fu Panda 4 will be directed by Mike Mitchell (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Trolls, Shrek Forever). The plot was revealed: Po receives a promotion and has to decide who will be the next Dragon Warrior. Po meets a female Fox warrior named Chen to possibly be his successor. The pair don’t get along at first but must learn how to put their differences aside to battle the Chameleon, a sorceress who can summon every single villain from past films back from the dead.
The cast was announced for Illumination’s next movie Migration. Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Keegan-Michael Key, Awkwafina and Danny DeVito. This is written by The White Lotus creator Mike White. Its a road trip family comedy but with ducks.
Disney
Gareth Edwards next movie True Love has been retitled The Creator. John David Washington plays a man who has to protects a non-human child (android?) during an apocalyptic war between humans and Artificial intelligence. Very visually stunning, District 9 comparisons.

Revisiting The Fugitive, Plus An Interview With Director Andrew Davis
00:32:29
On the December 28, 2023 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film editor Jacob Hall and editor and chief film critic Chris Evangelista to talk about the 1993 action movie The Fugitive.
Opening Banter:
In Our Feature Presentation: An Appreciation of Andrew Davis’ The Fugitive
General thoughts?
Harrison Ford - where does this rank for you as a Ford movie?
Tommy Lee Jones
The Fugitive was nominated for Best Picture, but Jurassic Park was not.
Original script: Twist revealed in which Gerard had hired the one-armed man to kill Kimble after Kimble had screwed up an operation on Gerard’s wife. Also a romantic subplot with Julianne Moore’s character, but they rightly took a step back and remembered Kimble is supposed to be in mourning for his wife, so they cut that part out.
Are there any lessons modern Hollywood can take from The Fugitive, or was that such a different era that the parallels are meaningless?
