In 1951 under head coach Leonard Rafensburger Iowa won 2 games and was winless in the Big Ten at 0-5-1. Yet a tough, contact loving kid from Iowa City won the Chicago Tribune's Silver Football, symbolic of the league's MVP. Fullback Bill Reichardt ran over most anyone who dared try and tackle him. At a little over 200 pounds, Reichardt was Iowa's MVP, All American and All Big Ten in 1951 after starring at Iowa City High. Today he remains prominently in the Guinness world book of records as the only athlete in any sport to be voted conference most valuable player for a team that didn't win a game. To displace any thought that the candidate pool in 1951 was lacking, among those Reichardt beat out for the award was Ohio State's Vic Janowitz, the 1950 Heisman trophy winner. It was that kind of grit and determination that would propel Bill Reichardt to an amazing career as a businessman, politician and the spark that reignited the Iowa-Iowa State football series in the 1970's. The Hawkeye men with Fran McCaffery beginning his 12th year has revamped his lineup with the departure of player of the year Luka Garza and the gifted Joe Weiskamp. Iowa hosts Slippery Rock in it's exhibition game Friday night at 7 in Iowa City. 6'8 forward Keegan Murray burst onto the scene as a freshman averaging 7 points and a handful of rebounds. While Murray won't sneak up on opponents this winter, we won't have to. Murray is listed among the league's best in a pre season poll of coaches and media. The voice of the Hawkeyes Gary Dolphin is joined by Keegan Murray, Joe Toussaint, Connor McCaffery and Head Coach Fran McCaffery.

The new look Big Ten has officially grown by 4 teams to a total of 18 with the addition of former Pac 12 members Southern Cal, Ucla, Oregon and Washington. Iowa football welcomes the Washington Huskies to Kinnick Stadium October 12th before visiting UCLA on November 9th. The Washington Huskies bring distinguished tradition to the Big Ten including a National runner-up finish to Michigan in last January's CFP title game. College football is a month and a few days out. The Iowa Hawkeyes start their training camp in less than two weeks. Pre season awards and watch lists are rolling off the press for the likes of seniors Jack Campbell at LB and CB Riley Moss. Linebackers Seth Benson and Jestin Jacobs are highly thought of and punter Tory Taylor landed on the Ray Guy award roll call. Offensively the line, the blockers soaked up a valuable year of experience and look to build on a Citrus Bowl performance that saw the running game average 6 yards a carry. George Roddy once set the Finkbine course record, shooting a 72 with nine's of 31-41. Roddy rarely lost over several years of competition starting in 1929. Sadly he couldn't defeat racism. Banned from country clubs where most prominent tournaments were held because he was African American, George Roddy never got to compete for a Big Ten title. He won several in state university meets and all of his head to head duals. Growing up in Keokuk and unable to afford a bus ticket to campus his freshman year, Roddy walked to Iowa City. The amazing story of new Hawkeye Hall of Famer George Roddy is the subject matter for this week's Fight for Iowa, along with Field Hockey's Amy Fowler. Plus, Iowa football in search of a consistent offense, is preparing for cross state rival Iowa State with the Cy Hawk trophy at stake.

Iowa football star Defensive Back Dane Belton saw action as a true freshman in 2019. The Hawks couldn't get him off the field after that. Belton started at outside LB in Iowa's recently completed 10-4 season. Whether nickel or dime, ultimately cash back or hybrid linebacker, Belton makes plays. Now he'll take his talents to the National Football League. Dane Belton joins the huddle on this week's Fight for Iowa podcast.

New Iowa Volleyball coach Jim Barnes grew up in the deep south and has spent most of coaching career in that region but he's well aware of how strong the upper Midwest and Big Ten teams are in this court game. Recently Wisconsin beat Nebraska for the NCAA title. Behind those two come Minnesota, Penn State, Purdue and Michigan as power programs in America's top conference by far. In a sport that now numbers more participants than college basketball, Barnes relishes the chance to move Iowa into that group. Jim Barnes steps to the Microphone on this weeks Fight for Iowa!

There have been only four sports information director's in the history of Iowa athletics, dating back to 1924. Eric Wilson was the first and spent 44 years in the main chair. Wilson was an Iowa track star as a student and qualified for the 1924 Olympic games. Wilson at one time held the world record in the 200 and 400 meters. In between he and Steve Roe were George Wine and Phil Haddy. Three of the four are in the CoSidsa Hall of fame with Roe to be inducted in June. Roe has assisted five student athletes in gaining national awards, he's promoted 16 All Americans, created the all century basketball team in 2002 and has worked over a hundred Big Ten and NCAA championship events. Iowa Gymnastics has vaulted out of the blocks. The 18th ranked Hawkeyes open their Big Ten dual meet schedule at Ohio State on January 22nd with the Gym Hawks home opener January 27th with Minnesota. The season got off to a rousing start last week-end at the Super 16 meet in Las Vegas. Iowa posted a second place finish to 11th ranked Cal. Thats the 2nd highest season opener score in program history. Coach Larissa Libby joins us on this weeks Fight for Iowa podcast, along with Hawkeye football's latest College Football Hall of Famer Robert Gallery.

Since it's release earlier this year, the long anticipated documentary on Iowa football's most famous and significant player, Nile Kinnick, has been performing to near capacity audiences in theatre's and to thousands on social media. The film's creator and Executive producer Scott Seipker just returned from Japan and Nile Kinnick High School where students, faculty and community residents learned about the building's namesake. On this Veteran's week, the Fight for Iowa podcast thanks all members past and present, men and women of the United State Military who've served their country including Navy Ensign Nile Kinnick. A roster of a little more than 40 players reported to Iowa Hawkeye baseball spring training this past week.
