Mariama was about the same age as Eve (Jurnee Smollett) when she first saw the film. She and Jordan discuss both films, and the ways in which the promise of progress in ‘90s entertainment have been slow to materialize.

A master of depicting complex male...friendships?, he continues that trend in his new film, THE PASSENGER. And perhaps that instinct got its start watching Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. Producer's note: When we prepped Jordan's new intro to this amazing interview from April of '22, I had jotted something down like, "who could have dreamed back then that he'd go on to win all the awards." Jordan rightly called this out, because (as she says here) she, and other critics, DID dream that. It's a practical effect-driven spinoff of a horror comedy anthology from a Black director, sprinkled with bare-breasted ladies, centered around a mixed-race cast, set in the Southwest,  and starring Billy Zane as an ooze-filled demon and Jada Pinkett as a quietly brooding Final Girl. When writer/director Justin Simien (Dear White People, Haunted Mansion) first saw William Greaves' groundbreaking 1968 film, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One. He was mad. Not about the film's avant-garde style (part fiction, part documentary, part  performance art) but about the fact that he hadn't seen it sooner -- it might've saved him a lot of trouble as he found his way in a challenging, second-guessing industry. THE SAVAGES (directed by Tamara Jenkins, who also directed SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS, and starrring Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman) is an often poignant comedy about adult siblings trying to get care for their elderly father, who suffers from dementia. Finnish director Hanna Bergholm put her creative spirit into her new body-horror coming-of-age film for IFCMidnight, Hatching. But she's hear today to tell us about feeling seen by another creative spirit: the titular Lucy Muir in Joseph L. Mankiewicz's 1947 classic The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.
