17 Mar 2022Mariama Diallo on 'Eve's Bayou'00:53:02

Mariama Diallo’s new debut feature film, MASTER, may be a horror movie, but just like Kasi Lemmons’ first feature, EVE’S BAYOU, it tackles themes of ritual and the supernatural. Mariama was about the same age as Eve (Jurnee Smollett) when she first saw the film. She and Jordan discuss both films, and the ways in which the promise of progress in ‘90s entertainment have been slow to materialize.

Then, Jordan’s got some really important stuff to say about feeling seen by another title character: The Batman.

20 Years Later, Eve’s Bayou Is Still a Stunning Portrait of Black American Life

05 May 2022Janet Varney on ‘Heavenly Creatures’00:52:13

When MaxFun’s own Janet Varney saw Peter Jackson’s HEAVENLY CREATURES as a teen, she didn’t let the movie’s whole matricide thing keep her from feeling seen. The daydreamy, obsessive devotion of a young Kate Winslet and a young Melanie Lynskey for one another was what really stood out. She and Jordan unpack all of that, plus talk about queer murderers in film, the “danger” of women alone together, the importance of valuing teenage feelings, and much more!

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about Peter Jackson’s (other) early work!

Brianne Tju has starred in series like Light as a Feather, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Scream, and plays the lead in the new Blumhouse movie Unhuman. She’s broken barriers and had several “firsts” under her belt. But for her, seeing the films of Wong Kar-wai was a major first – the first time she saw complex romantic relationships between characters who looked like her.

04 Jan 2024Joey Clift on 'Prey'00:52:21

Growing up on the rez, comedian and writer Joey Clift didn't know that comedy (or TV writing) was an option for him. But a decade in Hollywood has taken him from UCB teams to Emmy nominations, and on the way he's helped create the Native representation he didn't see as a kid.  He's also watched as the industry has begun to make that representation more common -- as with his Feeling Seen movie pick of Naru from Hulu's 2022 hit PREY.

25 Jan 2024Kali Reis on 'Euphoria' [Replay with an Update!]00:56:47

The interview in this episode was originally published in March of 2022.

Before she was the starring alongside Jodie Foster in TRUE DETECTIVE, Kali Reis was a champion boxer. As she shares in this interview, she has always been "boxing for a cause" -- in particular, that of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women. In her feature debut, 'Catch the Fair One' (directed by Josef Kubota Wladyka), she plays a  woman whose world is shaken when her sister goes missing.  Reis, who is of Wampanoag and Cape Verdean heritage, brings us a character with much different problems, but whose physicality, sense of humor, and deeply felt emotions, have been making Kali feel seen: Rue Bennett from HBO's Euphoria.

Then, back in 2024, Jordan has one quick thing to say about the brand new crop of Oscar nominees.

29 Sep 2022Doug Jones on 'The Wizard of Oz'00:56:28

At 62, Doug Jones is as busy as ever, playing The Baron on FX's What We Do in the Shadows, Saru on Star Trek: Discovery, and returning to the role of Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus 2. But you might be most familiar with Doug for his singular roles in heavy prosthetics -- as Abe Sapien in Hellboy and Hellboy II, as The Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water; as Pan and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth. Doug's physical presence -- once something he'd have wished away -- is a huge part of what has made his performances so rich and memorable.  And one early source of inspiration and identification was Ray Bulger's Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz.

03 Aug 2023Carter Smith on 'Nightmare on Elm Street 2'00:55:36

Carter Smith is a queer horror icon, even if all his films aren't highlighting explicitly queer relationships. A master of depicting complex male...friendships?, he continues that trend in his new film, THE PASSENGER. And perhaps that instinct got its start watching Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. Much has been said -- and not all of it in alignment -- about the gay subtext of Freddy's Revenge, and central to that is the performance of Mark Patton as Jesse Walsh, a young man fighting a demon he doesn't understand and can't shake (decades later, Smith would cast Patton in his film  SWALLOWED). Then there's his hunky compatriot, Grady.  All this and more on today's FEELING SEEN.

From her roles in a semi-autobiographical sitcom in 1996 (Life's Work) to The Parent Trap to Abbott Elementary, Lisa Ann Walter has played a lot of different kinds of strong, brassy women. And even though standards of beauty and acceptance in Hollywood are always changing, those winds haven't always blown in her favor. 01 Jun 2023Liz Glazer on 'The Wonder Years'00:54:47

When award-winning comedian Liz Glazer watched The Wonder Years as a kid, she thought she was seeing, for the first time a kid just like her: one who knew even as he lived his life that he'd one day look back on all this wistfully. This simple (mis?)interpretation of the show foreshadowed the type of adult she'd grow into: a comedian who is able to weave tragic experience into comedy with ease.

09 Mar 2023Daniela Taplin Lundberg on 'Thelma & Louise'00:55:02

Daniela Taplin Lundberg has made her mark in Hollywood doing something that’s become increasingly rare: creating authentic and artful films that are made for adults and appeal to a wide audience. These are movies like The Kids are All Right, Beast of No Nation, Nanny, Harriet, just to name a few. Today she talks with Jordan about Thelma and Louise – and in particular the affinity that she felt with Geena Davis’s Thelma from the first time she saw the movie (in the theaters, as a teenager). The movie was even an early example of her producer’s eye – she knew she’d seen something special before the film became a sensation.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about her old friends and their new (nu?) dance with Ghostface in Scream 6.

16 Mar 2023Ke Huy Quan on Returning to Acting [Replay]00:54:26

Producer's note: When we prepped Jordan's new intro to this amazing interview from April of '22, I had jotted something down like, "who could have dreamed back then that he'd go on to win all the awards." Jordan rightly called this out, because (as she says here) she, and other critics, DID dream that. What I'd meant was: it seemed like one of those performances and films that you hope will be both lauded AND awarded, but you aren't holding your breath for the latter. How thrilling to be wrong sometimes.

Watch Ke Huy Quan accept his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

***

As a kid, he was Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. But as he got older, Ke Huy Quan began to feel that there wasn't really a place for him in front of the camera. After decades of telling himself he didn't miss acting, Crazy Rich  Asians made a splash, and Ke began to think that maybe it was time to get back to acting. Ke opens up about all of that, and landing in the perfect threefold role of Waymond, Alpha Waymond, and CEO Waymond in Everything Everywhere All At Once

12 Jan 2023Akela Cooper on 'Demon Knight'00:55:06

If you needed proof that '90s movies were built different, look no further than TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT. It's a practical effect-driven spinoff of a horror comedy anthology from a Black director, sprinkled with bare-breasted ladies, centered around a mixed-race cast, set in the Southwest,  and starring Billy Zane as an ooze-filled demon and Jada Pinkett as a quietly brooding Final Girl. It's a whole moment in horror history, and a young Akela Cooper -- the same Akela Cooper who would go on to write M3GAN and MALIGNANT -- saved up over $40 to buy it on VHS after her parents missed taking her to see in in theaters.

When writer/director Justin Simien (Dear White People, Haunted Mansion) first saw William Greaves' groundbreaking 1968 film, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One. He was mad. Not about the film's avant-garde style (part fiction, part documentary, part  performance art) but about the fact that he hadn't seen it sooner -- it might've saved him a lot of trouble as he found his way in a challenging, second-guessing industry. Now Justin is introducing more people to the contributions to cinema made by Black creatives like Greaves, through his series Hollywood Black, now streaming from MGM+.

Then Jordan has one quick thing about Brandy and other stars lighting up the late-summer/early-fall horror slate.

10 Mar 2022Hany Abu-Assad on ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’00:52:11

Acclaimed director Hany Abu-Assad is a real standup guy. Randle McMurphy…eh, not so much. But ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST has us rooting for McMurphy nonetheless, and for a young Hany, he offered a glimpse into the nature of oppression, and the power of creativity as a form of resistance. No, really!

After Jordan and Hany have a deep and thoughtful conversation about all that, and about his new film, HUDA’S SALON…Jordan has one quick thing to say about something else deep: the new trailer for DEEP WATER

04 Aug 2022Charlotte Colbert on ‘La Boum’00:48:16

Charlotte Colbert is a multimedia artist fascinated by questions of identity, nature, inheritance, and cultural demands. Her feature debut, SHE WILL, is an ethereal ghost story about healing, witchcraft, and revenge. LA BOUM is a movie from 1980 about a cute 13 year old who goes to a fun party. Where do these paths intersect? In “the Noumenon,” apparently!

After that far-out and philosophical conversation, Jordan has one quick thing about Mia Goth in general, and the forthcoming PEARL in particular.

Jordan quotes this interview with Charlotte from 1883 Magazine.

13 Jan 2022Michael Jai White on 'Rich Man, Poor Man'00:45:34

This week's guest: Michael Jai White. He's an actor, a martial artist. He played the title character in the original live action Spawn movie. He played the title character in Black Dynamite. The title character in Tyson, the Mike Tyson biopic.

Or  maybe you saw him in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? Or Insecure? In those True North inserts?

He's a big deal, a true action hero who's always dreamed of doing comedy, and we're thrilled to talk with Michael about the movies that made him who he is, including the TV miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man.

Michael Jai White's latest film is called The Commando, you can check out the trailer here, watch it on VOD or maybe even in a theater near you.

Plus, before we go: Critics loved Birds of Prey, the Harley Quinn movie. At the box office, though, the movie was cursed with a release just before the pandemic made its way around the world. Jordan makes the case for why it's time for this bisexual catastrophe to get a sequel.

THE SAVAGES (directed by Tamara Jenkins, who also directed SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS, and starrring Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman) is an often poignant comedy about adult siblings trying to get care for their elderly father, who suffers from dementia. That might not be the most expected pick from a director whose new horror film, IMMACULATE, now has  the distinction of being NEON's highest grossing opening weekend ever. But it's the movie that speaks most directly to an all-to-common, yet rarely depicted phase of life -- one that Michael found himself in right at the moment his Hollywood career hit its stride.

The creative force behind the documentary ‘The Problem with Apu,’ comedian Hari Kondabolu, is on the show this week. Hari discusses a composite of media in which he saw parts of himself in growing up, but never the full picture. Here are just a few of the titles mentioned – Harold & Kumar, Office Space, the comedian Stewart Lee, and the BBC show Goodness Gracious Me. But that only scratches the surface. Plus, at the end of the program, Jordan elaborates on the need for better video game movies like ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.’

15 Dec 2022David Bruckner on 'Broadcast News'00:53:02

Today, director David Bruckner talks with Jordan about feeling seen by Holly Hunter's character, Jane Craig, in the 1987 classic, BROADCAST NEWS. Directed by James L. Brooks, it's a journalism....satire? rom-com? dramedy?... starring Hunter, Albert Brooks, and William Hurt. It's one of those movies that is so prescient about what news media would become. And for David Bruckner -- whose latest film is this year's HELLRAISER -- saw in it some parallels with what it feels like to be a creator in any medium.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the new trailer for 65.

The movie CLUE may not have been an instant hit, but it has an enduring legacy. And maybe everyone has a favorite character.  But for Adam Goldman, creator and writer of The Outs and Hot White Heist, Mr. Green (Michael McKean) is more than just a fave. He's a first example of what it means to be a "gay dipshit" (his words, we promise).

02 Jan 2025Mamoudou Athie on ‘Monkey Man’ [REPLAY]00:57:08

As we all emerge from our holiday slumber, we are turning back the clock to one of our favorite interviews from 2024. Whether he’s starring in major movies like ELEMENTAL or JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION, or sinking his teeth into roles like Yorgos Lanthimos’ KINDS OF KINDNESS, actor Mamoudou Athie follows his gut and ignores the algorithms. When Dev Patel’s directorial debut, MONKEY MAN hit theaters, Mamoudou found new depths of admiration for Patel as an actor and director — and he also found a character he could deeply relate to in the determined Bobby/The Kid. It's an amazing conversation. So good, we had to play it twice!

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the January slate of films just around the corner.

A New Jersey native like Smith (and like the film's characters), Glen didn't just see himself on screen -- he also saw a style of creative expression that felt achievably close-to-home. 07 Dec 2023William Brent Bell on 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'00:54:00

When the director of some of the juiciest modern horror films came to us with Ferris Bueller as his "feeling seen" pick, we were surprised and intrigued. John Hughes' fun-loving and beloved (except by the principal) truant, as played by Matthew Broderick, is the ultimate main character. And while William Brent Bell might not crave the spotlight, he has a surprising amount in common with young Ferris.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about books from the authors who we've had on the show this year: Manuel Betancourt (THE MALE GAZED), Anna Bogutskaya (UNLIKEABLE FEMALE CHARACTERS), Kyle Turner (THE QUEER FILM GUIDE), Malachi Moore (HAUNTED REELS).

"All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be. It has potential. But your taste -- your taste is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you.  A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting creative work went through years of this. Our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this." - Ira Glass

07 Jul 2022Kristen Meinzer on 'Anne of Green Gables'00:53:44

As Kristen Meinzer (Movie Therapy, By the Book, Romance Road Test) observes, Anne of Green Gables does something relatively rare in media: it centers the story of an adopted heroine. Growing up in Minnesota, there were many aspects of Anne Shirley’s character than Kristen saw in herself, for better and worse. She and Jordan unpack that, get meta about podcasts (Kristen did, after all, write the book on podcasting), and put an end to the myth that happy people don’t have trauma (and traumatized people can’t be happy).

Then, honest to god, in honor of Tom Cruise’s 60th, Jordan rhapsodizes about Cruise’s turn as Stacee Jaxx in the ROCK OF AGES movie.
