24 Oct 2023FTF Ep. 58 - Decision Day is Over, So is the Fire00:39:15

MLS Decision Day has come and gone, and once again the Fire are left out. The Men In Red needed a win at NYCFC, but came out disengaged and uninspired. The Pigeons of NYC bested the Men in Red 1-0, but neither team ended up making the MLS Cup Playoffs. Tune in for the recap and the beginning of an off-season long look at the Chicago Fire's players and coaches.

Our host also gives you his picks and predictions for the MLS Cup Playoffs. Listen to the full show to see whether he picks chalk and what upsets he thinks will happen. Be sure to leave a comment with your pick to win it all!

05 Jun 2023FTF Ep. 32 - Open Cup or Bust After Defeat at Cincinnati00:31:48

Hey, Fire fans! We're all in on the US Open Cup, right? After the defeat to FC Cincinnati, the Chicago Fire need to focus on their best opportunity to do something meaningful this season. And from the way they played in Cincinnati, they already were. Interim manager Frank Klopas rolled out a 5-4-1 formation and played for a draw from the opening whistle. He rotated his squad and tried to preserve his defense, but once again, the Men in Red couldn't hold onto points late. Lucho Acosta scored the winner for FCC in the 83rd minute, and the Fire left Ohio with nothing to show for their efforts. Tune in as our host breaks down the stats and the disappointment of the match.

In the 2nd half of the show, Nick looks ahead to the US Open Cup where the Chicago Fire will face the Houston Dynamo. The Dynamo have had a more impressive Cup run than Chicago so far, but a single-elimination tournament can produce many surprises. The Fire will need to create much more on offense than they have in their recent stretch of games to have any chance of claiming their 5th USOC Trophy - which would be an MLS club record.

19 Sep 2023FTF Ep. 53 - Draws That Feel Like Losses, Pt. 2: No Goals in Montreal00:39:56

Hey, soccer fans! Once again the Chicago Fire traveled to the Great White North against what looked to be an inferior opponent, and once again they return to the Windy City with a single point. The Men in Red underwhelmed offensively and relied on young-star goalkeeper Chris Brady to preserve the goalless draw. Tune in as Nick looks at the lineup issues and breaks down the match stats.

In the second half of the show, we preview the Fire's next match: a midweek meeting with the Columbus Crew. Nick explains just how potent the Columbus offense can be, but also what the Fire can do to maybe secure a point on the road. He takes a quick look at the betting odds and gives you his not-so-hopeful prediction.

21 May 2024FTF Ep. 88 - Nothing Works: Chicago Fire lose to Columbus Crew01:23:08

Hey, soccer fans! Over the weekend, the Chicago Fire lost again, this time to reigning MLS Cup Champions, the Columbus Crew, by a score of 3-1. The Carlos Teran goal was the lone highlight for the Men in Red who have nothing working.

Stay tuned as our host looks back at the match, gives his impressions - both positive and negative - and breaks down the stats. He also recaps the post-game interviews with Chris Brady and Fabian Herbers, and does a listen-in on manager Frank Klopas' post-game press conference.

08 Aug 2023FTF Ep. 47 - Fire's Leagues Cup Run Ends and Transfer Updates00:36:31

Hey, Fire fans! What a way to go out in Leagues Cup! Przybylko misses a sitter and moments later Gimenez scores an own goal. The Fire were once again victims of their old habits - playing desperate defense and failing to create anything on offense. While Club America looked frustrated at times during the second half, they were soundly in control of the match. Tune in as we discuss the lineup choices, the stats, and the overall impressions of the match.

In the second half of the show, join our host Nick as he recaps all the big transfers from around Major League Soccer. Several playoff-bound teams have signed players who will help shore up their defense or keep their offense rolling. We cover the latest moves from LAFC, LA Galaxy, San Jose, Dallas, Minnesota, and the Crew.

09 Jun 2023FTF Ep. 33 - MESSI TO MLS!!! ...and the Fire did stuff, too.00:31:02

Hey, soccer fans! Leo Messi has agreed to play for Major League Soccer as part of Inter Miami CF! This is the biggest signing since David Beckham fundamentally changed the way MLS is played and constructed. Messi will undoubtedly force teams to adjust how they think about their clubs in both the business and soccer/sporting aspects. As for fans of the Chicago Fire, they need to see how a team like Inter Miami - who only has been in existence for 3 years and has already been sanctioned for roster violations - goes out and makes a signing of such impact and magnitude.

In this episode, our host also looks back at the Chicago Fire's last match, a 4-1 embarrassment in the US Open Cup to the Houston Dynamo. The Men in Red played their worst game of the season, showing the weaknesses of the players, coaches, and front office.

Nick also looks ahead to the Fire's match against Columbus Crew this weekend. Surprisingly, the Crew are one of the best offensive teams in MLS. They lead the league in goals and assists, and have some of the best passing numbers across all clubs. They are going to be a very difficult test for the Fire, and we here at Glass House Soccer are not optimistic.

What do you think of Messi's announcement?

How do you think the match will play out?

Hear about the Berhalther and Mansueto's vision for the team and the possibility of the new stadium.

22 Aug 2024No Place Like Home: Nick's Back from Vacation, Shaq's Back to Switzerland00:41:23

Hey, soccer fans! There's no place like home - and Nick is back home from vacation to Greece to recap all the Chicago Fire news from the summer transfer window. Most notably, Xerdan Shaqiri parts ways with the Men in Red and returns home to sign with FC Basel in Switzerland. Nick looks back on the tenure of the "Swiss Magician" in Chicago and what it meant for the club. Also, we explore the news of Sporting Director Georg Heitz announcing he's stepping down from the Fire after the season.

In the second half of the show, we look at the Fire's newest acquisition: MLS journeyman Ariel Lassiter. Lassiter could be what Mueller was supposed to be for the club, and Nick breaks down his strengths and how the Fire could use him. We also preview the Fire's next match, an away trip to New York to take on NYCFC. There should be goals in this matchup of teams looking to make a playoff push.

16 Apr 2024FTF Ep. 83 - Rinse and Repeat: Fire Draw Red Bulls 0-000:47:15

Hey, soccer fans! Tell me if you've heard this one before: The Chicago Fire are unable to get their offense going and take advantage of an opportunity to steal points. Well, it happened again at Red Bull Arena. The Men In Red had a man advantage for almost an hour but were unable to create any offense against a home side that was perfectly content to watch the Fire pass the ball harmlessly around the pitch. Tune in as Nick analyzes the various storylines and stats from another underwhelming performance.

In the second half of the show, Nick examines the Fire's next opponent: Real Salt Lake. The Western Conference foe is having a solid start to the season behind Diego Luna and Chicho Arrango. The Men in Red will have their hands full with the higher line and counterattacking of the Claret Reds. But the Fire have faired well in cross-conference match ups. What do you think the result will be?

Nick also gets caught up on the proposed roster rule changes that may come to MLS this summer - flexibility on Designated Players and U22 Initiative Players, a second buyout option, and increased General Allocation Money (GAM) from transfers. How could the Fire use these new mechanisms to improve this summer? Keep watching to find out!

19 May 2023FTF Ep. 27 - Court Jesters: Fire a Joke in the Queen City00:28:29

Hey, Fire fans! The Men in Red put on another joke of a performance at Charlotte FC during their midweek match. Despite the first half goal from Kacper Przybylko (who nearly turned a breakway into a blunder), the Chicago Fire allowed the opposition two late goals. The club from the Queen City saw Brandon Cambridge announce himself to MLS with a two goal performance. The Fire again showed their mental weakness, their tactical incompetence, and poor defending.

In the show's second half, our host looks at the salaries of the Chicago Fire, as recently released by the MLS Players Association (MLSPA). It's not surprising that Shaqiri is vastly underperforming his contract, but the numbers paint a bigger picture of incompetent spending and clueless roster building. Nick compares the Fire roster salaries to LAFC - a team known for constructing solid rosters year over year - and poses the question: What if we took $4 million from Shaqiri's contract and spent it on better players on the bottom half of the roster?

13 Apr 2023FTF Ep. 17 - Rematch! Previewing Chicago Fire vs. Philadelphia Union00:23:40

Hey, Fire fans, we're back looking at the Chicago Fire's next matchup - a rematch against defending Eastern Conference champions, the Philadelphia Union. In a recent match at Subaru Park, the Fire lost 1-0 but performed better than expected. Will they get the full three points now that they are back home in Soldier Field?

Our host, Nick, previews three big questions for the Fire:

  1. How will they start Brian Gutierrez and Xerdan Shaqiri together?
  2. Who gets the start along the backline?
  3. How will the Union play given their rotated squad from Concacaf Champions League?

How do you think the Men in Red will perform this weekend? Leave a comment and be sure to follow on social media.

23 Jul 2024A Mess in Miami: Fire Lose 2-1 to the Herons00:51:26

Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire took a trip to South Beach to face a Messi-less Inter Miami team but could not come back with a win. The Men in Red continue to play lethargic, uninspiring soccer, and fall to the Herons 2-1. Our host does not hold back in his criticism of the players and coaching staff, and gives his live reactions to Manager Frank Klopas' post-game comments.

In the second half of the show, Nick discusses headlines from the Chicago Fire organization - a Fan-First Guarantee if Messi doesn't play in Chicago and news on the new training center - as well as discussing the latest big MLS outgoing transfer. Caleb Wiley of Atlanta United has been transferred to Chelsea for a reported $11 million transfer fee.

17 Oct 2023FTF Ep. 57 - International Break00:38:51

Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire are on international break, but there's plenty to talk about with Major League Soccer releasing their 22 Under 22 list of the best young players. See where the Fire's young stars Brian Gutierrez and Chris Brady placed, and who could be on the list for the Men In Red's in the future.

Nick also gives his reaction to the fan reactions for the United States Men's National Team friendly vs. Germany - a disappointing 3-1 loss. We must remember that this game was only a friendly, and we must remember that the coaching staff is still developing and evaluating talent and tactics. But there are still further questions to what exactly we should expect from USMNT as it prepares for World Cup Qualifying.

To wrap up the show, Nick reviews the newest MLS Cup Playoff Format, and he talks about some roster moves for the Houston Dynamo and Inter Miami. Tune in for all this and more!

Hey, soccer fans! So you're saying there's a chance? With the Chicago Fire's victory over the New York Red Bulls this weekend, they move one place closer to an Eastern Conference Wild Card spot. Georgios Koutsias provided the game-winner from a surprisingly well placed free kick from Xerdan Shaqiri. Tune in as our host discusses the game winner, breaks down the stats, and examines what kind of striker Koutsias can develop into. We also analyze the play of Wyatt Omsberg and Carlos Teran - and look into the future as to how they can help the Fire succeed in the years to come.

In the second half, Nick looks ahead to your Men in Red's matchup against the Herons of Inter Miami. Without Messi and Alba, we anticipate this to be an ugly matchup that either team could win. And though the Fire are home favorites, Nick is predicting a draw - and predicting the Fire's playoff hopes stay alive for one more week.

31 Oct 2023FTF Ep. 59 - Playoffs Kicked Off, Fire Kicked Back00:32:32

Hey, soccer fans! The 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs are underway, and there's been no shortage of goals and excitement. The home team won every match but one (SKC/STL UPSET ALERT!), and the teams are ramping up for the 2nd match of their best-of-three series. There'll be plenty of action as the playoffs move forward - who's your pick to win?Even through the Fire haven't done any business this young offseason, there's still plenty to talk about. How would you feel if the league folded the club? Orrin Schwarz of the Daily Herald proposed the idea, but see why Nick thinks it's completely unreasonable and should be unmentionable.

Our host also discussed the objectively poor performances of the Men in Red's Designated Players, and he gives the Pros and Cons to hiring Chris Armas as the next manager - a rumor that is generating some buzz.

07 Jan 2025A New Dane: Chicago Fire Sign Philip Zinckernagel00:35:50

Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire gave their fans a late Christmas present, announcing the signing of Danish winger Philip Zinckernagel. Zinckernagel comes to the Fire from Club Brugge, has a winning pedigree across several European leagues, and will be expected to generate offense and opportunities for Hugo Cuypers. Zinckernagel signed a four-year, TAM deal with the Men in Red, allowing them to keep both of their remaining Designated Player (DP) slots open.

We also have international news, as the Mauricio Pochettino and the USMNT announced their January camp roster. 24 players were called in - 23 from MLS rosters - including the Chicago Fire's own Brian Gutierrez. There will be stiff competition for who can impress the new head coach and givce themselves the opportunity to play for the Yanks in major competitions.

18 Jul 2023FTF Ep. 44 - Chicago Fire: For Real or Frauds? and Leagues Cup Preview00:45:08

Hey, Fire and MLS fans! Welcome back as we Feed the Fire talking about the player ratings and the Fotmob/Sofascore effect on the sport. Our host rants about how it's hurting the game - just like fantasy football did to the NFL - but he also takes a deep dive into how it can be useful for certain evaluations, comparisons, and conversations.

Nick also recaps the Chicago Fire's win vs. a reeling Toronto FC squad. Your Men in Red did just enough to take three points - and it took them 90 minutes and a shocking Przybylko header to do it - from the Reds north of the border. Tune in for a stats recap and commentary by our special guest, John Donovan.

After the break, Nick admits the Fire have turned a corner, but doubles down on the fact the team still isn't that good. Favorable matchups are helping them more than they're helping themselves, and the franchise still sits in 8th place (of 15 teams).

Finally, Leagues Cup is upon us! Get your primer on the newest tournament and find out exactly why it's so important for teams to take the event seriously. This ain't the opening rounds of the US Open Cup.

Hey, soccer fans! Nick is back and spittin’ Fire! In this episode, we begin with a recap of the Men in Red’s season opening draw to the Philadelphia Union. Nick questions some of the lineup decisions and the transition defense, but all things considered, is happy with a point on the road to a perennial Eastern Conference power. He also discussed the step forward homegrown attacking midfielder Brian Gutierrez took in this match.

In the second half of the show, we give you and update on Concacaf Champions Cup, the likelihood of a Major League Soccer team winning the tournament, and we recap all the scores from around the league. Our show finishes with Nick’s pre-season predictions for the Eastern Conference (spoiler, he’s not very high on Inter Miami).

14 Jul 2023FTF Ep. 43 - Bizarro Soccer: Fire Good, USMNT Bad00:38:26

Hey, soccer fans! It was a bizarro Wednesday on the American soccer landscape. In Major League Soccer, we saw the Chicago Fire jump out to a quick 3-0 lead vs. conference rival CF Montreal and hold on for the victory. Not to be outdone by young stars Georgios Koutsias and Brian Gutierrez, Xerdan Shaqiri found his finishing touch. Tune in as our host breaks down the team play and goals (including Shaqiri's stunner), and analyzes whether the Chicago Fire - your Men in Red - have turned a corner.

In the second half of the show, Nick previews the Fire's next matchup: a beleaguered and battered Toronto FC. The reds to the north are without Italian star Bernardeschi, and plenty of other players are sidelined with injuries. The Fire's hot streak of catching opponent's at their weakest continues, but can they convert it to another three points? Stay tuned.

To wrap the show, Nick also comments on the play of the USMNT in the Gold Cup, after an upsetting loss to Panama in the semi-finals. Even though the USA brought their "C Team," the expectation was still to win the tournament. Listen in as we discuss the player pool depth and where US Soccer Federation (USSF) needs to continue to build the program.

Hey, soccer fans! Welcome to latest episode of Feed the Fire: A Chicago Fire podcast. In this episode, we preview the Fire's opening match vs. NYCFC, examine the Giorgos Koutsias signing, and take a look at the coaching style of manager Ezra Hendrickson. Nick likes the Fire to draw 1-1 despite what could be a favorable matchup in Week 1 against NYC. He loves the Koutsias signing as having a high-upside from both business and performance standpoints. However, Nick is cautious about Ezra's tactics, formations, and substitutions. Hopefully he's learned from last season and ready to lead the team to three points.

20 Mar 2023FTF Ep. 10 - Fire Collapse vs. Cincinnati00:32:19

Hey, Fire fans! What another late game heart-breaker. (And I'm not talking about the NCAA Tournament.) The Chicago Fire blow a 2 goal lead in the last 10 minutes, and only muster a point at home vs. an FC Cincinnati team that didn't even start their best player-Lucho Acosta!

Our host gives you his thoughts on the first half, how things changed in the second half, and what exactly went wrong on the FCC goals. Not to be too pessimistic, the Fire did get three goals - Przybylko, Czichos, and Mueller all found the back of the net - but defensive woes and offensive consistency are still an issue. Oh yea, and closing games, and preparation, and coaching...

Tune in as Nick breaks down the player performances, coaching blunders, and statistical analysis of the match. He also examines where Fire fans should place the blame for the poor form that's been plaguing the Men in Red for what seems like years.

Our host moves on to preview the Fire's next match-up, a home game against Western Conference opponent Houston Dynamo. They Dynamo come to the Windy City on a three-game win streak, but struggled on offense as much as the Fire. 21 Jan 2025Dancing La Bamba: Chicago Fire sign winger Jonathan Bamba00:33:43

12 Sep 2023FTF Ep. 52 - Seeking 3 Points: Previewing Fire at Montreal00:31:53

Hey, Fire fans! I hope you enjoyed the international break - and I hope the Chicago Fire took advantage of it, too. Will the time off be enough to snap a 4-game losing streak? Tune in as Nick breaks down the players, formations, and tactics he expects to see when the Men in Red travel to their neighbors to the north. The Fire had a great game against CF Montreal in July, but these are two teams that have trended in different directions since then. Who do you think takes the three points?

In the second half of the show, we look at some news surrounding the Fire's players on international duty. We also talk about Alex Monis of CFII being loaned to Rio Grande Valley FC of the USL Championship. This is Klopas' fourth or fifth (who can keep track!?) time as the leader of the team, and the hiring is proof that the Chicago Fire as an organization are not prioritizing winning.

30 Jul 2024Fire in the Hole! Chicago Fire Open Leagues Cup with a Loss00:41:35

Hey, soccer fans! We're back with more Chicago Fire talk as we recap the Men in Red's loss to Sporting KC in their Leagues Cup opener. The Fire went ahead on a sweet strike by Koutsias, only to be beat by Castellanos and Agada of Kansas City later in the match. We analyze what the match can tell us about the remainder of the Chicago Fire's season.

In the second half, Nick reads his favorite quotes from a recent Crain's article that interviewed Fire owner Joe Mansueto and Chicago Red Stars President Karen Leetzow on building a soccer stadium in Chicago. 22 May 2023FTF Ep. 28 - Beware Greeks Bearing Goals: Fire Draw Atlanta00:36:08

Hey, Fire fans! It was unofficially Greek Night at Soldier Field with Chicago’s Georgios Koutsias and Atlanta’s Giorgos Giakoumakis combining for three of the six goals on the night. The Greek strikers lifted their teams to a point each, but it was ultimately another disappointing performance by the Men in Red. An abysmal first half was salvaged by a masterful Xerdan Shaqiri corner kick (scored an own goal against the Five Stripes, but we all know it was an Olimpico), and the Fire showed enough effort to salvage a draw.

In today's show, our host uses the goals as jumping off points to analyze the Fire's defensive lapses, lack of talent, and how relying on effort - and utility player/try-hard-effort-guy Fabian Herbers - will always lose out to superior talent. Nick also looks at the Fire's schedule over the next several weeks, and explains how the season could be over very soon.

30 Aug 2023FTF Ep. 50 - Red, Dead, No Redemption: Fire Lose in LA and Vancouver Preview00:32:25

Hey, soccer fans! Tell me if you've heard this one before...

Yes, the Fire lose again after missing early opportunities, making some boneheaded plays, mentally check out, then spend most of the match chasing the game and the opposing players. This time the Men in Red fell 3-0 to a Los Angeles Galaxy team not know for offense and not known for clean sheets. Tune in to hear how it all went down and how we can confidently say this was the "same ol' Fire."

Stay tuned for the second half of the show where our host previews the Fire's next match, a mid-week home game against Western Conference opponent Vancouver Whitecaps. The 'Caps are coming off a big win against Cascadia rival Portland, and their offense is looking to keep its form in Solder Field. Will star strikers Ryan Gauld and Brian White keep up their great season? Will the Fire have the legs and the mental capacity to earn a point? Nick gives you his analysis, picks, and predictions.

The show concludes with a listener question on substitution rules and strategies in Major League Soccer. Nick recaps the applicable MLS Competition Guidelines and gives his take on good and creative substitution strategies. How do you think the Fire should use their subs?

In the second half, we take a look at the historical season Inter Miami is having. After clinching the Supporters' Shield, can the Herons set the single season point record, win MLS Cup, or both? 20 Jun 2023FTF Ep. 36 - Forest Fire! Chicago vs. Timbers Preview and USMNT Win Nations League00:21:22

Hey, Fire fans and USMNT fans! The Fire are getting ready to re-start their MLS campaign, and the United States are once again the Kings of Concacaf!Tune in as our host previews the strengths and weaknesses of the Men in Red's next opponent: the Portland Timbers. The Timbers defense and home-field advantage should give them the edge. For the Fire to win, they'll have to possess the ball and keep up the pressure - which they've never done yet. Yikes.

Nick also gives us his quick impressions on the USMNT victory over Canada in the Nations League Final. The Yanks played some of the best soccer we've seen in recent memory, and dominated their northern neighbors. Most impressive were the defensive performances by Joe Scally and Antonee Robinson and the offensive performances by Gio Reyna and Folarin Balogun, but every single player did his part and did it well. Congrats to the reigning Kings of Concacaf!

In the second half, we discuss the latest signing for the Men in Red: David Poreba. The MLS Next Pro Golden Boot winner and league MVP is now with the Fire first team. Now let's get some rumors started as to who will be running alongside him on the wings!

02 Jan 2024FTF Ep. 68 - Fire Schedule & Management Tips from BJ Callaghan00:35:27

Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire's 2024 MLS schedule was announced, and Nick takes a dive into the not-so-favorable hand the Men in Red have been dealt. The schedule is front-loaded with top Eastern Conference teams, and the non-conference matchups could be tricky. The Fire do close the season with a softer slate of games, but will they be in any condition to take advantage of it?

In the next segment, Nick shares his notes from a webinar with USMNT assistant BJ Callaghan. Coach Callaghan gives a peek behind the national team curtain as he described management techniques the coaching staff uses.

The show finishes with a recap of all the transfers from around MLS, so stay tuned to the end to see what moves are being made around the league.

26 Mar 2024FTF Ep. 80 - Rainy Road Day: Chicago Fire Draw in New England00:40:41

Hey, soccer fans! Welcome back to Feed the Fire. This week, Nick recaps the Chicago Fire's road draw in New England in what way a rainy, sloppy match. Even with Cuypers' early goal, the Men in Red couldn't complete the road victory, conceding to Nacho Gil in first half stoppage time.

Nick also looks ahead to the Fire's next match: a difficult road test at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the Five Strips of Atlanta United. With Almada and Giakoumakis back from international duty, the Fire backline will have their work cut out for them. If they can match or slow down Atlanta's pace, Chicago might have a chance to come home with another point.

And in honor of the Greek Independence Day and the Feast of the Annunciation, Nick closes his show with a prayer - The MLS Lord's Prayer.

14 Jan 2025Reinforcements Arrive: Chicago Fire Bolster their Defense00:23:06

Hey, soccer fans! Does anyone at the Chicago Fire take a day off? The club recently announced two new signings, both defenders that are sure to bolster the backline for the 2025 season. First, the Men in Red have signed Sam Rogers, a player that Gregg Berhalter gave a USMNT appearance in 2023. He has proven himself a solid player in Norway and USL, and hopefully his game will translate to Major League Soccer. The Fire also signed Portuguese youth international Leonardo Barroso. Barroso has a wealth of youth experience playing for Portugal and Sporting CP B, and will be part of the next generation of great Fire defenders - or the next great Fire transfer.

In the second half, Nick looks at how these signings allowed Wyatt Ombserg to sign with the New England Revolution. We also discuss the financial issues that put the Philadelphia Union on the FIFA transfer ban list. Tune in for all this and more!

19 Mar 2024FTF Ep. 79 - Windy City Victory: Chicago Fire defeat CF Montreal00:42:05

Hey, soccer fans! What a victory from the Chicago Fire! The luck of the Irish was at Soldier Field this St. Patty's Day weekend as the Men in Red came from two goals down to shock their Canadian rivals. Goals from Maren Haile-Selassie, Brian Gutierrez, Hugo Cuypers, and Kellyn Acosta shocked the crowd and their opponents ... despite the poor play of the team for most of the game.

Nick's takes on the game will surely sober up a few fans.In the second half, we look ahead to the Fire's match against New England. The Revolution - terrible tea boxes and all - have zero points on the season. The Fire could be walking into a trap game or walking into an opportunity to start a win-streak. Make sure you listen for what Nick thinks will happen.

We conclude the show with a lighting round style update on all things club news, Chicago Fire II signings, and US Open Cup updates.

10 Apr 2023FTF Ep. 16 - Fire Defeat Loons! Recapping Chicago's Win Over MNUFC00:30:02

Hey, Fire fans! The Fire are unbeaten in four matches, have moved up to 6th in the Eastern Conference standings, and are trending higher. Their latest result - a 2-1 victory over Minnesota United - was the Fire's best match of the season. The attacked cohesively, maintained control of the game, and made the tactical and formational adjustments to preserve the victory.

In this episode, Nick recaps the goals, the coaching moves, and statistics of the Men in Red's latest performance. He also looks at young goalkeeper Chris Brady's performance. Despite the howler, he came up with a number of good saves, and has the right mentality to excel in the future. Brian Gutierrez also continues his performance as the engine driving the Fire's offense, and the attention he receives from opposing defenses is opening up lanes for wingers Haile-Selassie and Mueller, and wing-backs Souquet and Navarro.

Hey, soccer fans! Welcome back to Feed the Fire, where our host is fired up about Frank Klopas' new staff. He bring in new assistant coaches - Paulo Nagamura and Carlos Garcia - two coaches without any success at the MLS level, and sees the need for two video analysts. At least he kept Zach Thornton.

Your Men in Red welcome Nashville SC to Soldier Field and look to steal three points from the 2nd best team in the Eastern Conference. When not watching the Fire, his eyes will be on Atlanta vs. Montreal, LAFC vs. San Jose, and Vancouver vs. Seattle....and the USMNT! The Men In Red quickly turn their attention to the upcoming match against CF Montreal. Nick gives you the players to watch for the visitors and how the Fire can notch their first win of the season. 11 Jul 2023FTF Ep. 42 - Did Someone Say Playoffs? Nashville Win Recap, Montreal Match Preview00:40:26

Hey, soccer fans! Don't say it too loudly, but the Fire are on the verge of being above the playoff line. After an uninspiring win over Nashville SC, the Men in Red sit level with 9th place CF Montreal on points. And would you look at that - who is the next opponent on the schedule: CF Montreal. It's fate! The Fire face off against one of the only teams in Major League Soccer that are worse than they are (at least statistically). Don't expect beautiful soccer, but do expect a hard fought match to try to keep a rival out of a playoff spot.

Do the Fire pull off another victory? Any little bit of offense will go a long way against this Montreal team.

05 Mar 2024FTF Ep. 77 - Chicago Fire Return to Red, Not to Winning01:02:32

Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire have returned to red, but they have not returned to winning. Nick breaks down all the highlights, lowlights, and statistics from the Men in Red’s home opener against FC Cincinnati. The defending Supporters’ Shield winners used a bit of luck, a bit of skill, and a bit of bad officiating to spoil the Fire’s first home match of the season. Nick gives you the glass half full and glass half empty view of all main themes of the match.

In the second half, Nick previews the Fire’s next match against the Columbus Crew. He explains how he’d approach the game and what he expects manager Frank Klopas to do. Our host also breaks down the players to watch for the defending MLS Cup Champions and how the Fire can slow down that potent offense. We close the show looking at the surprising results from around the league and checking in on the latest player moves and transfers.

26 Nov 2024Thanksgiving Appetizer - Pelzer, Tata, and Sartini Out00:27:05

Hey, soccer fans! As we get ready to feast for Thanksgiving, tune in to our appetizer show talking aboutteh front office changes for the Chicago Fire and the coaching changes in Miami and Vancouver. Sebastian Pelzer is out as Technical Director but moves full time to a position with FC Lugano - the Fire's sister club in Switzerland. His tenure in Chicago was anything but a success on the pitch, but some of his scouting and networking benefits can still be realized by the Men in Red.

Meanwhile, we learn that Tata Martino's voluntary resignation may have been anything but voluntary as Inter Miami are looking to take their club in a different direction. And in more shocking news, Vanni Sartini has parted ways with the Vancouver Whitecaps after three-and-a-half seasons. Nick breaks down the developments and discusses where each club could go from here.

03 Apr 2023FTF Ep. 14 - What did we just watch? Fire Flat vs. DC United00:33:13

Hey, Fire fans! What did we just watch? I wish I could say the Chicago Fire's flat play vs. DC United was a bad April Fool's joke, but sadly it's a result of an anemic offense, a defense barely holding it together, and a head coach unable to adjust/adapt over the course of a game...or a season...or his career (TBD).

In today's show, our host looks at the offensive woes and how the team is operating on the slimmest of margins for error. Defensively, the team got lucky that Taxi Fountas and Christian Benteke had off-games, otherwise this could've been a 3-0 route at home. (And defense is supposed to be their strength!) Finally, Nick breaks down Fire manager Ezra Hendrickson's post-game comments, revealing that Ezra literally doesn't have the answers.

13 Dec 2023FTF Ep. 65 - Money, Money, Money, Money ... Muuuh-nay00:29:54

Hey, soccer fans! Tonight's episode is all about the money! The Chicago Fire have renewed their partnership with Magellan, and they even have a new kit sponsor - FINALLY! Tune in for Nick's takes on what the club can do with the money, and what he thinks of Carvana and the Chicago Fire forming a new partnership.

Our host also discusses the latest transfer for the Men in Red: a trade with the Colorado Rapids sending Miguel Navarro and $450,000 in GAM to the Western Conference club, and bringing back former Chicago Fire youth product Andrew Gutman, who is expected to sign a new deal through 2026. This is an immediate upgrade at the left back position for the Fire, and the Rapids couldn't pass up a deal that essentially paid off Gutman's transfer fee and threw in a seasoned, MLS defender.

01 Jul 2023FTF Ep. 39 - Keep the Streak: Previewing Fire at Orlando00:25:14

Hey, Fire fans! Will the Chicago Fire keep their win streak alive in Orlando? Tune in as our host breaks down the Men in Red's next matchup against a difficult Orlando City squad. With the return of three starters from international duty, Orlando City will have a rejuvenated and deeper lineup. If they can keep the Fire on their heels with counter-attacks and transition offense, it'll be a long day at the office for Rafael Czichos and the backline. Fortunately, goalkeeper Chris Brady has proven to be a great shot stopper.

In the second half of the show, Nick looks at some of the transfers from around Major League Soccer. This summer transfer window has teams very active, whether adding depth for a playoff run or re-arranging their rosters for the future. And don't forget the big matchup of this weekend: New England at Cincinnati! The top teams of the Eastern Conference face-off in a game that could impact the playoffs.

24 Mar 2023FTF Ep. 11 - Previewing Chicago Fire at Inter Miami00:28:45

Hey, Fire fans! Our boys from Chicago travel from Solider Field to DRV PNK Stadium to take on Inter Miami in Match Week 5 action. We preview the match for the Chicago Fire, including anticipated lineups, injuries, tactics, and expectations from the match. Nick also looks at the Herons from Miami and how he expects them to play aggressively against a struggling Chicago side.

Despite scoring 3 goals in their last match (a home draw to FC Cincinnati), the Fire still struggle offensively, are susceptible to counter-attacks, and prone to late game collapses. Also, the betting odds are against the away team earning a result. Be optimistic, Fire fans, but don't be surprised with another loss.

15 Nov 2023FTF Ep. 61 - The Nightmare Continues: Heitz, Pelzer Extended00:30:38

Hey, soccer fans! Pinch me, I must be dreaming - or is it a nightmare!? The Chicago Fire have extended the contracts of Sporting Director Georg Heitz and Technical Director Sebastian Pelzer. On the one hand, owner Joe Mansueto must really love the internal developments from Heitz and Pelzer - training facilities, youth investments, corporate culture, Lugano success. On the other hand, the on-the-field product has regressed to point of fan apathy and the sense of tone-deafness from the club. Nick gives his honest and loud opinions on what these executives could have actually done to deserve more responsibility and more money.

In the second half of the show, we also examine the lengthy extension of Brian Gutierrez through 2028 and the MLS 2023 season League Awards. Tune in and take it all in - it's going to be a long off-season, Fire fans.

06 Apr 2023FTF Ep. 15 - The Loons have landed! Previewing Chicago Fire vs. Minnesota United00:19:18

Hey, Fire fans, the Loons have landed! MNUFC is in town to take on the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field. In today's episode, Nick asks three questions about the Men in Red and previews how he expects Minnesota United to play out this match, and whether Ezra Hendrickson or Adrian Heath will get the better of their opponent.

For the Fire:

  1. Who starts at center-mid? Shaqiri or Gutierrez?
  2. Who starts as the outside-backs? Navarro and Souquet or Dean and Aceves?
  3. Will we see new Greek striker Georgios Koutsias? (I certainly hope so!)

Meanwhile on the Loons side of the pitch, I expect a defend-and-counter style. In order for the Fire to break this team down, they'll need to work on their possession and score quickly. Can they do it?

What are your predictions for the match? Leave us a comment or get in touch via social media.

25 Jul 2023FTF Ep. 45 - Fired Up: Leagues Cup, Messi, and Doumbia00:38:52

Hey, Fire fans, are we enjoying the Leagues Cup!? Messi nets his first goal in MLS, American clubs dominate their Mexican counterparts in Liga MX, and we haven't even seen all the clubs play yet! Tune in and listen to our host break down Messi's play, the Fire's chances of advancing, and why he thinks Leagues Cup will start a cycle of new investment and development in American soccer.

Nick also takes a closer look at the Chicago Fire's latest acquisition, defensive midfielder Ousmane Doumbia. The 31 year old Ivorian has spent his career in the Swiss Super League, making a name for himself as a reliable starter and solid defender. How will this translate to MLS? Nick let's us know the stats and how he anticipates his role with the Men in Red.

02 Jun 2023FTF Ep. 31 - Draws That Feel Like Losses: Toronto FC Recap & FC Cincinnati Preview00:23:39

Hey, Fire fans! The Chicago Fire are coming off a mid-week match at BMO Field, and unfortunately are coming off another draw. While a draw at Eastern Conference power New England may have felt like progress, the draw against Toronto FC certainly felt like a loss. The Fire changed up their formation, moved players around (Koutsias to the wing? Never again!) and would have ended up with a much worse result if not for the likes of goalkeepers Chris Brady and Spencer Richey. It looked like the Fire were playing for a draw in the second half and already thinking about their next US Open Cup match.

But they can't overlook FC Cincinnati! The Men in Red travel to the Queen City (yes, another city with that nickname) to take on the top team in Major League Soccer right now. I don't think Brandon Vazquez will miss like he did in the first meeting between these squads, and Lucho Acosta certainly won't be a late sub for the orange and blue. This could be an ugly game for the Fire, who will have to rely on turnovers and quick counter-attacks if they are to have any chance at a result.

18 Apr 2023FTF Ep. 18 - Not Again! Fire Draw Union, Drop Points at Home00:32:39

Hey, Fire fans! Tell me if you've heard this one before: the Chicago Fire look to turn the corner on their season, play a great first half, then blow a lead (at home!). Once again, the Men in Red left Soldier Field with a sense of deja vu.

After a good first half where the Fire controlled possession, gave Maren Haile-Selassie his first goal, and earned a wacky own-goal from an odd Philadelphia Union clearance, defensive lapses and poor discipline once again doomed Chicago. In this show, Nick breaks down the goals, player and coaching performances (Why didn't Ezra sub in Wyatt Omsberg!?), and gives his reactions to the match. He also takes a look at Gaston Gimenez, a now polarizing figure on the Fire's roster, and explains why he'd like to just move on from the inconsistent, hot-headed defensive midfielder.

Good for Jim Curtin and the Philadelphia Union on stealing a point, but the home team played right into their hands and left their supporters saying "Not again" once again.

What do you think of the Fire's latest debacle? Leave a comment below and be sure to follow on social media.

28 May 2024FTF Ep. 89 - Baby Steps: Chicago Fire Draw DC United00:53:49

Hey, soccer fans! It was a road point in the nation's capital for the beleaguered Men in Red. Yes, the Chicago Fire did just enough to earn a 1-1 draw against DC United and give themselves and their fans a sliver of hope. Defender Carlos Teran successfully held star striker Christian Benteke in check, while Andrew Gutman created opportunities for the visitors - including starting the play that led to Kellyn Acosta's equalizer. Can the Fire turn this into a point streak?

They'll have a mid-week game against a similarly struggling Orlando City side and a weekend matchup with Western Conference power LA Galaxy to test their newfound confidence. In what should be a match between equally desperate teams, Chicago will have the home field advantage against The non-Messi, Florida squad. They will hope to take any momentum into their match vs. the stars of the Galaxy. It could be a big week for the Fire, so tune in and hear what Nick thinks will happen.

18 Jun 2023FTF Ep. 35 - International Window: Fire on Break, USMNT on Fire00:31:08

Hey, Fire fans and USMNT fans! The Chicago Fire are on international break, but we've still got news to discuss. Brian Gutierrez is on the radar of Premier League side Manchester United, and out host gives his thoughts on why his transfer to the storied club would be a great move for the both clubs and Guti himself. We also touch on the new ticket package the Fire front office is marketing (it includes the Inter Miami game!), and discuss why Jesse Marsch would be a great fit to be the next manager of the Men in Red.

In the second half, Nick talks about the USMNT's dominant performance vs. its hated rival: Mexico. This was the math that broke El Tri's dominance in North America. And despite USA getting Concacaf'ed (to the tune of two red cards), they showed they won't back down from a challenge. Also in USMNT news, Gregg Berhalther has officially been announced as returning to coach the squad. It's a good hire - despite what your personal opinions are - so tune in to hear ours.

13 Jun 2023FTF Ep. 34 - Finding New Ways to Lose: Fire Stunned by Zelarayan, Crew00:42:09

Hey, Fire fans! Well, we should've predicted the Fire to lose, we could've predicted it'd be a late game stunner ... but we NEVER would've predicted Lucas Zelarayan to win it from past mid-field! The Men in Red found a stunning new way to lose against conference rival Columbus Crew, and continue their residency in the basement of Major League Soccer. Stay tuned as we look at the goals, the statistics, and all the hot-takes from the last match.

In the second half of the show, our host previews the Chicago Fire's upcoming schedule (mercifully they have 9 days off, but then 3 road games), and how points are going to be sparse in the near future. Nick also breaks down the Eastern Conference and Western Conference standings, giving you his surprise teams of the season so far - both the good and the bad.

28 Feb 2025The Messi Rules and Chicago Fire Home Opener Preview00:29:00

Hey, soccer fans! MLS is back at it again, this time with the MLS Disciplinary Committee issuing a fine to Leo Messi and Luis Suarez for their actions against NYCFC - grabbing the neck of an opposing player and coach - but suspending the Chicago Fire's Brian Gutierrez for a match after a hard foul and contact to an opponent's head. Are we seeing The Messi Rules finally coming into plain view? Or do you think these two instances can be reconciled?

In the second half of the show, Nick previews the Men in Red's home opener against DC United. Stay tuned to hear the transfers in and out for DC and how the match is expected to go. The Fire squandered opportunities to take points against bad Eastern Conference teams last season, and if they want to make the playoffs, can't do it again.

07 May 2024FTF Ep. 86 - Rock Bottom: Chicago Fire Lose to New England00:56:29

Hey, soccer fans. Remember all that positivity from last week? Well, it's nearly gone. The Chicago Fire lose 1-0 to the worst team in Major League Soccer, the New England Revolution. There's really nothing new to say about the miserable performance of the team: No offense, no goals, defensive lapses, poor individual play, non-existent tactics and coaching...

In the second half of the show, we preview the Fire's next loss ... er, match against St. Louis City SC. The Western Conference rival is sitting in 9th place and must be looking at this weekend's matchup as an easy three points. Will the Men in Red be able to take advantage of St. Louis' poor goalkeeping and finally get back on the scoreboard?

The show ends with a look at Messi's historic match vs. New York Red Bulls and the Columbus Crew's historic run in Concacaf Champions Cup.

19 Jul 20243 Points to Go! Chicago Fire beat FC Cincinnati 1-000:35:19

Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire pulled off an improbable win against league leading FC Cincinnati during their midweek matchup. Despite a decent start, the Men in Red looked lethargic at times, reminiscent of recent sub-par performances. But a bad back-pass from Kip Keller led to a Hugo Cuypers fast break, and the Belgian DP was able to slide a pass to Brian Gutierrez who scored from 6 yards out. It was all the Fire would need to secure only their 2nd road win of the season.

In the second half of the show, Nick previews the upcoming match against Inter Miami, and how the Fire will have to play in order to salvage a point against the current league leaders. Even without Messi, the Herons are an explosive team on offense and a capable team on defense. We also take a look at the new MLS roster rules and how they could affect teams going forward.

09 Jan 2024Feed the Fire Episode 69 - Incoming Transfers!00:34:48

Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire have started the new year with a number of transfers to solidify their backline. Tune in as Nick gives his take on reported incoming right back Allan Arigoni from FC Lugano and center back Tobias Salquist from Silkeborg IF. These two will certainly help the depth of the squad without breaking the bank, but will they move the needle any closer to making the playoffs and competing for trophies?

Nick also analyzes the depth chart for the Men in Red proposed by MLS pundit Matt Doyle. The addition of Arigoni and Salquist shake things up in the back, but the Fire still have a stable of midfielders to move around and are in need of a superior striker. We'll also review all the transfers and moves from around the league.

09 Jul 2024Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: Chicago Fire Lose to San Jose Quakes00:31:51

Hey, soccer fans! Ever think Simon & Garfunkel would apply to Major League Soccer? Well, Chicago Fire fans understand the darkness the club is in currently. They Fire have now lost to the worst team in both conferences, recently falling 1-0 in an uninspiring and lazy game in San Jose. The Earthquakes were the worst defensive team in the league, and the Fire - through a combination of lazy play, bad tactics, and lack of talent - couldn't find the back of the net. Tune in as Nick breaks down the goal, the moments of the match, and the stats.

In the second half of the show, Nick discusses some of the headlines from around MLS. Thiago Almada's record-setting transfer to Botafogo is completed. DC United sign forward Dom Badji. We finally break down the MLS All-Star roster.

Hey, Fire fans! Did this weekend feel familiar? Was it deja vu all over again? The Chicago Fire lost to Orlando City SC 3-1 for the second time this season, and their same offensive and defensive woes were on full display. In today's episode, we look at how Brian Gutierrez and Georgos Koutsias need to play better and diagnose some of their poor, individual moments. In the second half of the show, we explore the matchup between the Men in Red and their next opponent: the struggling LA Galaxy. 09 Apr 2024FTF Ep. 82 - Sweet Home Chicago: Fire defeat Dynamo at Soldier Field00:49:48

Hey, soccer fans! Are things heating up in Chicago? The weather is improving and so is the play from the Men in Red. This weekend we saw Xerdan Shaqiri and Brian Gutierrez score to give the home team a much needed three points. Head coach Frank Klopas tweaked the lineup, and it seemed to work against a Houston Dynamo team playing on the road, in a 4-3-3 formation, without start midfielder Hector Herrera. Tune in as we break down the goals, the stats, and whether the Fire can keep the good times rolling.

Next week, they face the best team in MLS so far: the New York Red Bulls. The Red Bulls are in fine form this season, and they boast an attacking duo that lead the league in goals (Lewis Morgan) and assists (Dante Vanzier). How will the Fire approach this difficult road test? Stay tuned to hear how Nick thinks the Fire can snatch a result on the road.

We also review the latest transfer news from around the league and recap the Concacaf Champions Cup.

03 Jan 2025New Year House Cleaning: Fire Transfer Salquist00:20:04

Hey, soccer fans! The Chicago Fire house cleaning continues under new Director of Sport and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. This time, defense Tobias Salquist is on the outs, being transferred to FC Nordsjaelland of the Danish Superliga. Salquist will likely not be missed - he only appeared in 14 matches due to injuries - and when he played, looked like he could not keep up with the pace and physicality of MLS.

In this episode, Nick also discusses the Philadelphia Union hiring new head coach Bradley Carnell. The former St. Louis City manager will likely play a high pressing style on the pitch, and off the pitch will likely agree with everything General Manager Ernst Tanner does. This hiring puts all the pressure on Tanner to get things right, or he'll likely be the next employee shown the door for the Union's failure.

30 May 2023FTF Ep. 30 - Away Day Draw vs. New England and TFC Preview00:34:45

Hey, Fire fans! Your Men in Red, the Chicago Fire, played the New England Revolution to a 3-3 draw at Gillette Stadium, behind goals from Georgios Koutsias, Maren Haile-Selassie, and an own goal from the Revs defense. However - and as per usual - the Fire were unable to hold the lead, giving up equalizing goals off of corner kicks to Bobby Wood and Jozy Altidore. (And that was after Noel Buck opened things up for New England with a banger.)

In the second half of the show, Nick looks forward to the mid-week matchup against Eastern Conference rival Toronto FC. TFC is coming off a solid win, but internal struggles between manager Bob Bradley and Italian star Federico Bernardeschi could undermine their chances of a win streak. If the Fire continue to play counter-attacking football, and Lorenzo Insigne and Richie Laryea can't pick up the slack, maybe the Men in Red from the States take the three points.

01 Aug 2023FTF Ep. 46 - Clipped Wings: Fire Down Loons in Leagues Cup00:42:03

Hey, Fire fans and MLS fans! What a way for the Chicago Fire to open up their history in Leagues Cup! Their improbably victory at Minnesota United marks a real turning point in the club this season. Through a combination of better team play, coaching, and catching some lucky breaks, the Men in Red look poised for a successful Leagues Cup run and a positive second half of the Major League Soccer regular season.

And for the second half of our show, our host breaks down all the biggest transfers of the Eastern Conference during the summer transfer window. Inter Miami added two Under 22 Initiative signings to compliment Messi, Busquets, and Alba. New York City finalize the transfer of Taty Castellanos to Lazio and obtain Perea on loan from Philadelphia. Columbus Crew make headlines by transferring star Lucas Zelarayan to Saudi Arabia club Al Fateh. There is some consolation for Crew fans as they also add Julian Gressel. Tune in for so much more from the transfer window.

Nick concludes the show with a quick word on the United States Women's National Team. He still has confidence in the team to win the World Cup ... again. But he cautions you to make sure you're getting you news and opinions from those "in the know." That is, not from self-educated internet accounts.

26 Dec 2023FTF Ep. 67 - Open Cup Update and Major Transfers00:37:29

Ho ho ho, soccer fans! Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and are looking forward to the New Year! The soccer news certainly hasn't slowed down during the holidays.

US Soccer responded to the MLS' sending of MLS Next Pro teams to the US Open Cup with a simple rejection, and MLS had to issue a rebuttal to save face. The back-and-forth is encouraging for fans and soccer purists, and hopefully will serve to better the working relationship between the two soccer powers in the United States. Tune in as our host gives his thoughts and introduces you to the people who make up the US Soccer Federation committees charged with overseeing the historic tournament.

Nick also discusses three Chicago Fire players to build on and goes over all the latest transfers in the league. Here about the impact Luis Suarez, Emil Forsberg, and others will make for Inter Miami, New York Red Bulls, and the rest of the league.
