18 Jan 202302: Two Mindset Shifts for Successful Marketing00:22:24

First things first, let us all recognize that anyone listening has a true passion for creating and you may very well likely have made creativity part of your job. That is amazing. It is also really hard to create, especially when most of us release what we create into the world for critique, sometimes within minutes of creating it. Instead of seeing a space filled with other creative people who are also sharing art, we start to compare. We start to doubt the very thing that brought us so much joy. We start to doubt the very reason we stuck with our artistic journey in the first place. Let’s acknowledge some truths: social media can be extremely rewarding and has led me to meet some of my very closest friends and grow my business, but it can also be a place that fills us with negativity. We are not generally viewing each other’s art in a coffee shop or on the walls of a museum. Instead we are sending image after image into our social world for immediate approval (or gasp! disapproval!). I cannot think of a a more terrifying way to share what you create!

You must get out of your OWN way in order to market. This episode goes over two important mindset shifts to market your family photography business the way you want to.

Mindset Shifts:
1. Getting over the fear of judgement - tips and tricks to get over judgement of yourself and worry about judgement of others
2. Overcoming comparison so you can market the way you want YOU want to so you can show up authentically.

23 Jan 202303: Three Helpful Marketing Tricks00:14:56

This week we will be chatting about three helpful marketing tricks: patterns, time-chunking and batching.

Often it is the overwhelm of what kind or content to post and how much to post that keeps us quiet. We know what we are tying to book and what we would like potential clients to connect with but when we go to post, we sit back because we don't have a foundation of what to say and where.

These simple tricks can help!

This episode is sponsored by my online class Four Steps to Building a Trusted Family Photography Business. You can learn more HERE.  It takes  place on Feb 16th at 10:30am PST.

08 Feb 202307: Educational Content Ideas for Family Photographers00:17:34

If you are at a place where you have a consistent body of work and you have at least a simple marketing plan, you need to make sure that one of the pillars of that marketing plan is educating potential clients.

First, you need a solid education foundation and often it is built around the wrong theme. The correct theme is “what is my potential client worried about/strugling with/preventing from getting on the calendar”.  Not about you as a photographer. We will go over how to create these content ideas + how to implement them.

11 Apr 202315: You are ALREADY good enough.00:13:50

This idea of being a good enough artist to actually start to market and run this thing like a business holds us all back. And I get it- I have been stuck in this loop where I am just focused on how much "better" everyone else is in the family photography industry.

There are so many photographers are subjectively better at the art of photography than I am. They are more creative. They understand their gear more. But that honestly doesn't matter. Tune in to find out why "goodness" matters so much less than you think.

18 Apr 202316: Writing and Talking About Your Business00:14:11

Writing and talking about yourself  can be a very huge road block to spreading the word about your business. But in the new economy, where in-person connections are more important than ever, you need a way to confidently and descriptively describe what you do because it is more than just family photographer.

The majority of this pushback comes from ourselves as we worry about the judgment of others. But once you decide you aren’t going to let what other people think hold you back, you may just simply not know what to say. So in this episode we are going to talk about two aspects of this important work to give some clarity around how to speak about what you do to draw the right potential customers into your brand

The first is the in person introduction and then we will discuss how we can apply this to a very important website page: the about me.

02 May 202318: Pinterest for Family Photographers00:28:55

Most of us began using Pinterest as a way to plan meals, decorate our homes, save future projects, plan birthday parties... the list goes on. If you have an account from the early days, it might be quite eye-opening to see what you were into back in the day.  :)

Just as with every marketing platform, savvy marketers figured out ways to play the system. Over the last few years, Pinterest started to feel a bit spammy. One reason for this is many marketers were using "looping" to re-pin pins to drive website traffic for lead captures and "make" pins go viral. Even though this was profitable for these marketers, it wasn't as fun to be on the user end.  So Pinterest switched up their algorithm again and now we can use it to market our family photography businesses because what Pinterest wants (original, creative + inspiring content) is exactly what we create!

09 May 202319: Finding Community Amongst Other Photographers00:16:06

Excerpt: "Community over competition to me means that you are confident enough in yourself and your work to build relationships with other creatives even if they ARE your competition. Competition isn’t a bad word. It keeps us innovating. Many of my photographer friends ARE my direct competition. You are in charge of deciding what that means. I know I am the only me, so the competition really lies between 2022 Fiona and 2023 Fiona.

Being “better” turns into being more profitable, being a better communicator, trying a new strategy, attempting new creative ways of shooting. Allllll of that has nothing to do with the photographer down the road. That photographer and I can live in the same city and be “competitors” for business in our town and still be friends."

23 May 202321: Using IG Stories Strategically00:19:37

IG stories are very underutilized by family photographers.  What many people currently use stories for: connection content + trust building. That is great but too often it just becomes noise. 30 May 202322: Repurposing Content (the how + why)00:16:42

One of the main things that stops photographers from marketing is overwhelm.

If everytime you sit down to market, you are starting from scratch you will eventually drown in overwhelm and go quiet- which is the common pattern.  Instead, you can create marketing materials for each Season and repurpose. Tune in to learn how and why it is important.

06 Jun 202323: Productivity for Marketing00:29:23

When I ask family photographers what holds them back from marketing, the most common answer is TIME.

Well, we cannot create more time but we can become more productivity.

People will often drown themselves in endless busyness to feel productive. But as the day slips them by, all of the "work" they have done hasn’t allowed them to actually check anything off the list that produces - or could produce - a direct result. That type of work is effort - but it is not productive effort. And, as a result, the tasks we immerse ourselves in are disguised as real, productive work because they are mentally draining.

When my brain was stuck in a place of comparison and self-doubt, I would take breaks from working (which, at that time mostly consisted of fretting in confusion about what I actually ought to do), to look through Instagram. Doing so felt so heavy and full of effort because the more I scrolled, the more I felt bad, yucky feelings. This feels like WORK. But it is NOT productive work. It is passive effort. It takes effort to scroll and for your mind to work overtime comparing and feeling scarcity, but that effort is not tied to any sort of meaningful result for your business. It is an enormous, painful time-suck.

Learn what results action is and how to get the work done in this episode!

13 Jun 202324: The Ideal Session00:15:14

As an artist, you need to know the elements of your ideal session. You can break these elements down and begin to use those as pillars of you marketing. Instead of saying you are best at photographing families with kids, you are best at photographing playful families. Or snuggly families. Or maybe you target fancy families. When you are looking through your viewfinder (or looking at the back of your camera since you are probably cooler than I am) more often than not you want to be doing so at a session that feels ideal for you as an artist.

This week, I get real with the struggles of keeping up a steady rhythm in content creation and reveal how marketing automation tools like Linktree and savvy internal linking strategies can not only save your sanity but invigorate your photography business during those tough months. Keeping a finger on the pulse of your marketing data ensures your strategies are hitting the mark and your hard work isn't lost in the digital abyss.

Setting deadlines is akin to setting off a flare in the night sky—it beckons action and illuminates the path to momentum in your marketing efforts. In this candid conversation, I walk through the psychological boost that a well-placed deadline can provide, sharing how something as simple as launching a Linktree can act as a self-imposed finish line, pushing you to reach your goals and keep those bookings coming. It's about nurturing trust in yourself as your own marketer and carrying that torch of momentum forward, shining a light on the way to sustained success.
