15 Mar 2018MLS makes CCL history (hooray!), but Herculez Gomez says there's a caveat01:53:43

Historic. There's no other way to describe MLS's week in the Concacaf Champions League. #CCLFever peaked on Tuesday with Toronto FC and the New York Red Bulls victories over Liga MX, then broke Wednesday as Chivas casually disposed of a beat-up Sounders side. What does it all mean? Has MLS turned the corner against their southern neighbors? What now in the semis, given the free space (disappointment) is still open? ESPN's Herculez Gomez joins the guys to share his infinite Concacaf wisdom.

Also in this episode ... MLSsoccer.com national writer Paul Tenorio on Darwin Quintero and Minnesota United and the TAM effect in MLS, a weekend preview featuring the clubs you said we never talk about and a rip-roaring mailbag featuring Dr. Seuss-inspired MLS rhymes!

28 Jan 2016ExtraTime Radio: Alexi Lalas (Fox Sports) on Matt Miazga, Ashley Cole and Tim Howard01:01:43

Major League Soccer was trending on Twitter on Wednesday. Why? Matt Miazga’s rumored big-money move to Chelsea and the soccer lifeline the LA Galaxy extended Ashley Cole. The guys give their takes on both moves…right after congratulating Landon Donovan on fatherhood. Fox Sports’ Alexi Lalas joins soon after to chime in on Miazga, Bruce Arena’s future in LA, Patrick Vieira, Jermaine Jones, Tim Howard and the role of captains on the field and off.

Meanwhile, Wilmer Cabrera has a lot of work to do, and very little time to get it done. The former Chivas USA and United States youth national team coach is now at the helm of USL expansion team and Houston Dynamo affiliate Rio Grande Valley Toros FC. Cabrera is currently building a roster from scratch, and he joins the guys to lay out his plans, challenges and mandate from the Dynamo.

In the mailbag, a long-time listener takes Andrew to task after some Twitter back and forth, New Jersey gets its soccer due and the guys try to narrow down the field and name the best left back in MLS.

12 Jan 2017ExtraTime Radio: Adrian Heath Minnesota United Special00:29:40

With 24 hours left until Minnesota United FC are on the SuperDraft clock, Adrian Heath joins the guys for a wide-ranging interview that’s a must-listen ahead of the big day.

Which prospects are standing out in the Combine? How close was Heath to returning to England after his time in Orlando ended? What was it like to coach his son in the pros? What’s his new life like in Minnesota? Has he slept at all – not really – as the Loons race to put their first-ever MLS roster together?

As usual, Heath is refreshingly honest, especially when it comes to what makes a good MLS player, how he wants his Minnesota team to play and what fans should expect come March 3 in Portland.

Check back for a full SuperDraft preview later on Thursday, including a sitdown with Atlanta United’s Carlos Bocanegra and Darren Eales, plus more interviews from the Combine!

10 Jul 2017Did Bruce Arena get it wrong vs. Panama? Plus MLS Transfer Window DP Moves ETR Drive by Continental01:04:12

A less than dominant start to the Gold Cup for the US national team leaves a lot of questions about Bruce Arena's decisions and this tournament's roster. Ben Baer and Matt Doyle join David Gass to look at all the good and bad of the US. From Kelyn Rowe's shining performance and Dom Dwyer's goalscoring streak to why Dax McCarty and Kellyn Acosta struggled to control midfield, the guys break it all down. Also, what upgrade is needed defensively and where can they find some attack from the wings? The guys also hit on Canada's big win against French Guyana and why Mexico may not be as exciting as they usually are.

In the second segment, the MLS transfer window is open and the rumors are flying. The guys discuss if Seattle targeted their next Designated Player and what it could mean for Jordan Morris. Plus, are big time moves coming in LA or NY? Could there be a big center forward traded inside MLS? All that plus much more.

In the mailbag the guys debate the state of the USMNT. Is this the most talented group ever? And what should expectations be at next year's World Cup? Plus who outside the playoff field is ready for a second half charge.

04 May 2017Two thumbs up for Sounders' Will Bruin + fake MLS trades01:11:47

If you were watching the games – feel free to fill in the rest on your own – last weekend, you know all about Will Bruin's meme-worthy, two-thumbs up moment. With an MLS Cup rematch on the cards, the guys dial up the Dancing Bear to chat about his new digs in Seattle, the best lock-room characters he's been around and the strikers in MLS he admires.

The guys dig into big games in Minnesota and Atlanta, then take a look at the current standings to determine which teams are favorites, contenders and pretenders before turning to the Hot-Take Hotline. Listeners are split. Some love it, some hate it and some are using it as a way to get through months in the wilderness on the Appalachian Trail. No, really.

Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio!

12 Feb 2015ExtraTime Radio: Amobi Okugo (Orlando City SC)00:58:47

It’s expansion fever on the latest edition hosted by Greg Lalas subbing in for Andrew, who caught more than just a fever. The guys glow about NYCFC’s Barcelona-esqe preseason opener and then talk to Orlando City midfielder Amobi Okugo, who takes us into Kaka-mania, the OCSC locker and more. Plus there’s Landon Donovan’s engagement and Toronto FC’s “armband-gate.”

In the second segment it’s all about FIFA and the US national team. There’s another FIFA controversy and this time it involves the breaking news about the 2026 World Cup TV rights and the Under-20 World Cup draw, as the US learned its opponents. Also would Jurgen Klinsmann leave the USA national team for the Aston Villa job?

We finish off with the mailbag and a dramatic turn of events: Simon is back in the listeners’ good graces. And this time it’s Greg’s turn to give supporting advance to conflicted supporters.

Listen as the Portland boss details his plans for 2017 and explains what makes a successful MLS team. There’s plenty more, too. What’s the best way to teach tactics to pros and youth players alike? MLS veteran and current leading scorer Kei Kamara also chimes in on the CCL discussion before diving into the reasons behind the hot start by Columbus Crew SC. His five goals may be tops in MLS, but Kamara is not content with how they've come about. Plus, find out which conference he thinks is the best in MLS (hint, hint — it's probably not the one you think).

Lastly, Liga MX may have some major Twitter beef on their hands, the celebration police come out of the woodwork again and we discuss when exactly it's appropriate to use "scissors in the ear."

03 Oct 2016ET Radio: Red-line Report + 'Caps' phenom00:51:04

With the holidays and vacation keeping Matt and David from their customary spots in the ETR lineup, Andrew turns to super sub Calen Carr to pick up the slack after an intense MLS weekend that saw Seattle solidify their hold on a playoff spot, D.C. United continue their rapid climb up the Eastern Conference table and Colorado keep pace with their Supporters' Shield dreams. The red line will dictate the rest of the season as teams fight to stay alive or for seeding. Alphonso Davies and the Vancouver Whitecaps are out of the race, but Andrew and Calen can't help but rave about the 15-year-old who is turning heads in British Columbia. He's the truth. So is Dax McCarty, whose return may have solved the Red Bulls' issues.

The latest US national team roster dropped over the weekend, and the guys applaud Jurgen Klinsmann for making timely choices from a deep pool. In bigger US national team news, former manager Bob Bradley became the first American to coach an EPL on Monday morning when Swansea City hired the one-time World Cup boss.

In the mailbag, Calen reveals why this week is bigger than most, and one listener hopes/wishes/prays for Lionel Messi to ATL UTD.

20 Jul 2015ExtraTime Radio: Benny Feilhaber (Sporting KC), and Kemar Lawernce (Jamaica, NY Red Bulls)01:09:43

There was a new DP taking the field (LA’s Steven Gerrard) and a new team atop the Shield standings after Week 20 (FC Dallas), but one thing in MLS remains unchanged: Sporting Kansas City is still statistically the best team in MLS and Benny Feilhaber is their best player and a league MVP candidate. The USMNT veteran joins ETR after an eventful weekend: another goal and assist for SKC and a spot on the MLS All-Star gameday roster … for the first time! What’s responsible for Feilhaber’s resurgence? And is a USMNT return around the corner?

06 Mar 2017ET Radio: Welcoming ATL, MNUFC to MLS00:51:58

MLS is back – no more previews, just the real thing – and the guys jam into one room to break down the Week 1 action. And there was no bigger story than firsts for Minnesota United and Atlanta United, each of which had their party spoiled in very different ways. The Loons absorbed a 5-1 loss in Portland on opening night, but is that really indicative of who'll they'll be in 2017? Meanwhile, Atlanta were Twitter darlings for 75 minutes ... then the Red Bulls reminded them that winning in MLS won't be some easy feat.

Jason Kreis knows a little something about tough expansion seasons, and while he was glad to open Orlando City's sparking new stadium with a win, the Lions boss probably lost sleep over an injury to Kaka that will keep the Brazilian out for six weeks. Can his teammates pick up the slack? It's going to be tough, that's for sure. Any game against FC Dallas is tough, which the LA Galaxy now know from experience after Kellyn Acosta's star continued it's steady rise with a game-winner at StubHub Center.

There's plenty more to chew on from Week 1, too. Should Houston be at the top of your MLS LIVE rankings? Are the Rapids MLS's answer to the binary code? Why aren't you on the Alphonso Davies hype train?

01 Jun 2017The incredible story behind Christos FC's US Open Cup run + US U-20s aim to make history01:07:59

A World Cup knockout run by the United States in South Korea? We've seen that before. This time, though, it's the US U-20s doing the damage, as a parade of MLSers helped Tab Ramos' team advance to the quarterfinals thanks to a 6-0 victory against New Zealand on Wednesday morning. Renaissance man and Top Drawer Soccer' Will Parchman joins the guys to praise Tab Ramos, marvel at Tyler Adams' eye-popping play and look ahead to a massive match against NYCFC's Yangel Herrera and Venezuela.

The second segment is all about the underdog, the soccer David attempting to slay another Goliath. Christos FC are sponsored by a liquor store. Their real jobs come before training. They're on the verge of shocking the world – if they haven't already. Christos FC are the final amateur side remaining in the US Open Cup and booked a Fourth Round date with D.C. United after a big win on Wednesday. Shawn Smith helped found the club two decades ago and calls in to tell their incredible story. Can they knock off the big boys? You've just got to believe.

In the mailbag, the guys rank bar games, wonder why Seattle and Portland fans are looking for plaudits while their teams struggle, debate Hernan Grana's defensive prowess and update everyone on MLS All-Star Fan XI voting (hint: ATLUTD fans are stuffing the ballot box).

In this episode, Andrew Wiebe, David Gass, Susannah Collins and Bobby Warshaw sit down to discuss two massive upsets in the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs. MLS Cup is set, and it’s déjà vu (again): Seattle Sounders vs. Toronto FC. Are you jacked or is it lame that we didn’t get a new matchup? What did the Sounders do to spoil LAFC’s season? More importantly, how will Bobby respond to Seattle head coach Brian Schmetzer’s national TV call out?

Former Sounder Steve Zakuani joins the show to explain the gameplan, take you behind the scenes before and after the match and describe what the next week will be like in the Emerald City. After, the crew wonders what LAFC’s long-term legacy will be without the ultimate prize? Still the best ever or just another great team? Opinions are split.

As for Atlanta United, they’ll have to settle for the double. Should we be surprised the Five Stripes didn’t show up? They’ve been up and down all year. Same for Toronto FC (for two years), so why were they the ones who got it done? Will Jozy be back in time for Cup? Does Greg Vanney get enough credit? 02 May 2019Why are MLS coaches calling their players out? Rapids GM on Hudson firing + Wk 10 preview01:00:09

In this episode, Andrew, David, Bobby and Susannah gather to discuss Major League Soccer’s current trend: coaches calling out their own squads. First up, Andrew’s 2019 MLS All-Star presented by Target XI. Got a chance, says Wiebe! Gonna get rolled by Atletico Madrid, says everyone else. Then it’s on to FC Cincinnati and Alan Koch – with plenty of props for the first-place Union – after comments from the coach that made it clear he believes the current squad isn’t enough to compete.

It’s a risky move, as Anthony Hudson found out. The Rapids parted ways with their head coach this week, and GM Padraig Smith called in to Extratime to explain the firing, lay out what comes next and take some responsibility himself. Who are the best candidates for the job? Bobby has a list, but we want to know what you think. In the Week 10 preview, planning for Baby Cameron’s first-ever MLS game at Red Bull Arena, the state of the Texas Derby (and Austin’s place in a few years), Sporting KC’s injury crisis and our ESPN+ games of the week featuring the Ozzie Alonso game, Crew struggles, Toronto FC rumors and Whitecaps-Rapids.

Can you take anything from Portland’s 2-1 regular season win in Columbus?

In the second segment, Liam Ridgewell makes his first ETR appearance to preview a historic game for the Timbers. 30 Mar 2017Jonathan Spector (ORL), Petke to RSL, USMNT reaction and the Fire's WCup dreams01:03:15

The MLS news machine never stops! After listening to the first-ever Hot-Take Hotline submission, the guys dive into Mike Petke's appointment as the fourth head coach in Real Salt Lake history, discuss the long-term implications of Oscar Pareja's contract extension in Dallas and then ponder how exactly the Chicago Fire might qualify for the World Cup. Confused? So was Bastian Schweinsteiger. There's plenty of weekend action to break down as well. You won't want to miss a marquee matchup between Seattle and Atlanta on a rare Friday night MLS doubleheader.

After the break, those pesky transfer rumors around Cyle Larin just won't go away. Doyle gives his take on the young striker's future, then veteran defender Jonathan Spector calls in to give Larin his vote of confidence, explain why moving to MLS now made sense and what it's like to make the move to Manchester United at 17 years of age. Spector is also high on Christian Pulisic (duh) and says he'd love to get his national career going again under Bruce Arena. Speaking of, the US got a 1-1 draw on Tuesday in Panama City, and David takes Andrew to task for expecting more. Doyle also got taken to task ... on Twitter ... by Jermaine Jones ... and shares the full story and the opinion that annoyed the LA Galaxy man.

In the mailbag, there's breaking news as the Whitecaps trade Kekuta Manneh to Columbus for Tony Tchani and an allocation money grab bag. What's going on with Vancouver? How does affect the Crew SC XI ... and could there be another trade in the works? Once that's out of the way, the guys listen to the inaugural crop of Hot-Take Hotline voicemails. You won't want to miss history being made!

Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio!

Leslie Jones was the breakout star of Sunday night’s 2016 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs action, as the SNL star-turned-MLS fan was treated to four sterling home performances by the lower seeds as the Conference Semifinals got things rolling back-to-back-to-back-to-back. Seattle Times reporter Matt Pentz joins the guys to dish on the roller coaster ride that is the Sounders, Brian Schmetzer’s future and the club’s MLS Cup ambitions. Then it’s out to LA, where Colorado ought to be feel fine about a 1-0 loss to the Galaxy.

The Eastern Conference was just as tight, with Toronto FC held in check in the late going by New York City FC. Those two goals hurt, though, and now Patrick Vieira and the boys from the Bronx have an uphill battle to climb that could have been avoided had they stuck to their guns from the regular season. Meanwhile, the Impact know who they are, and they aren’t ashamed to bunker and counter, a strategy that gave Montreal a 1-0 lead over the Red Bulls heading back to New York. Former Impact player and RDS commentator Patrick Leduc calls in the dish on the pragmatic Mauro Biello, Drogba-gate and Matteo Mancosu’s emergence.

In the mailbag, a New York metro area conundrum, a new MLS Cup champion, payroll vs. home-field advantage and more Ben ‘The Research’ Baer gloating by Sounders fans.
