Thanks for your support!

On the final regular podcast of the year, Patrick, Mike Atkins, and Joe sit down to discuss Everton's expected appointment of Carletto, Serie A's let's say misguided anti-racism campaign, and why no-one should ever join Manchester United unless they've got a mortgage to pay.

Then we roll into our best and worst of the decade, where we don't talk about Brexit. It's pretty good! And when Alex Iwobi makes the team of the year, I expect apologies from all of you in my mentions. Happy Christmas!

20 Feb 202054: Man City Banned - Can They Recover?01:05:15
Zac Djellab, Dougie Critchley, and Patrick van Straaten discuss Man City's Champions League ban, and what it changes for their finances and transfers, as well as the new Premier League top 5 race. We examine the club's insistence that they did nothing wrong, but also that the evidence UEFA has that they did something wrong was stolen, and if they did do anything wrong it probably shouldn't be wrong in the first place, and also that it's a witch hunt. Plus some Pep slander and #UnpopularOpinions about how maybe taking money from slave states might not be totally cool. Enjoy!
27 Feb 202055: Mourinho Already Done at Spurs, Chelsea-Bayern, and Animal Attacks00:59:31

Wash your hands!
20 Mar 202058: Coronavirus Update00:00:51
Hey Extra Timers, it's Patrick van Straaten with an update on the podcast during coronavirus. We're going to try to find a way to get new episodes to you, but we're just working out how to do it and what you might want us to cover while there's no football happening. Hit me up on Twitter or Instagram @Patrickbvs, if you've got any suggestions, but mostly just stay safe and wash your hands.
03 Apr 202059: Summer Transfers Would You Rather & Visiting the Future00:32:15
Welcome to the first quarantine transmission of Extra Time, which is now also available on YouTube! This week Patrick van Straaten and Chris Hamill do some Would You Rather with the summer transfer window, chatting over which players Europe's superclubs should be looking to sign and which they should avoid. We also discuss cutting your own hair, and going back in time.

This episode is sponsored by Harry's. If you'd like to claim your trial set for just £3.95, including a razor handle, 5-blade cartridge, foaming shave gel, and travel cover, just go to Harrys.com/extra.
09 Apr 202060: The Worst Man United Player Ever - Joe's Life In Football00:38:45
This week we bring you a special episode, taking you inside Joe Thomlinson's head (fresh from a haircut he gave himself with a beard trimmer). From his earliest memories of the game to the unexpected players he loves and hates, we talk about his ups and downs as a Man United fan, and I get in a lot of digs about how terrible United are now.

Let us know if you like the format, and who you'd like to see interviewed next.
16 Apr 202061: Ndombele to Barca, Real Madrid go wild, and Sancho out00:25:22
On this week’s episode of Extra Time, Patrick and Dougie discuss some of the biggest transfer rumours to hit the headlines this week.

First, we turn our attention to Real Madrid, who are apparently keen to rebuild their frontline with moves totalling nearly half a billion euros for Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappe. But are those the right moves? Is Pogba right for their midfield? Will they have to sell Asensio or Hazard to make it work? Then we look at how Dortmund might respond to Sancho leaving. Paper talk suggests they’re already targeting Valencia’s Ferran Torres as a replacement, but there are question marks over his experience.

Next up is Barcelona’s interest in Tanguy Ndombele, who could be on his way out of Tottenham after falling out with Jose Mourinho. Could he be the man to complement Frenkie de Jong in the middle of the park?

Finally, we do a quick yes/no round-up of the other major rumours including Kingsley Coman also to Barca, Luka Jovic to Arsenal, Jack Grealish to Everton, and what Atletico, Chelsea, and Man United might do in the market.

21 Apr 202062: The Best Premier League Team of the 2010s Draft01:01:53
On this episode of the Extra Time podcast, Patrick van Straaten is joined by Chris Hamill and Zac Djellab to draft competing teams made up of the best players to appear in the Premier League over the last decade. Zac and Chris didn't understand at first because they didn't read the script, but the idea got clearer after I drafted Luis Suarez. Head to Twitter to vote on which team turned out best (hint: it's not Chris').

This week's episode is brought to you by Beer52. Head to Beer52.com/extra to pick up your first case of 8 craft beers for just £5! It's a lockdown, you might as well drink. That's not their slogan, we made that up.
28 Apr 202063: How To End The Season00:30:12
What's up podheads, welcome back to the 4th or 5th episode of the coronavirus podcasts. How is everyone doing? This week, I (Patrick) am joined on the show by Mike Atkins and Michael McCubbin to talk about the various options for ending the season, what their benefits and difficulties are, and which ones would make Liverpool fans angriest. Remember the podcast is now available on FD's Youtube if you prefer to consume it that way, and if you're over 18 and like beer, why not sign up with Beer52 at beer52.com/extra and bag yourself 8 beers for just £5? Might as well drink through all this.
05 May 202064: Champions League for €50m? The Summer's Best Bargains00:35:40
This week on Extra Time, Patrick and Dougie discuss this summer's transfer market, the financial difficulties facing the big clubs, and then discuss how ambitious teams like Arsenal and Valencia can go about building a CL-ready side for next season. We discuss the best free transfers, the biggest players with expiring contracts, and the release clauses worth triggering across Europe. If you want to know who your team should sign this summer, start here.
13 May 202065: Bundesliga Predictions, Sane to Bayern, and Jorginho to Juventus00:45:24
On this week's Extra Time, Patrick is joined by Mike Atkins and Zac Djellab to discuss the return of the Bundesliga and make predictions for the end of the season. Then we move on to Leroy Sane's cut-price move to Bayern, and Zac gives us the Chelsea perspective on Juve's interest in Jorginho. We also chat over dream international team and manager match-ups, and Patrick complains about Dubai again.
19 May 202066: Has Cancelling Ligue 1 Killed French Football? 00:36:11
This week Patrick is joined by podcast debutant Henry Hill (not from Goodfellas) to discuss the controversy over the end of the French league season, and Lyon taking the French football authorities to court because they finished 7th (lol). They chat over what this means for the division and which players could leave cheaply this summer, before Patrick defends himself against his haters following his review of Joker on Twitter. Henry rounds things off with his movie hot takes, and to everyone's shock, he and Patrick agree that everyone else is stupid and wrong.

By the way, isn't it crazy that there are frozen pizzas called "Goodfella's"? Is that apostrophe enough to flummox copyright law? If you are a lawyer please let us know on Twitter how such a thing is possible. You know what, if you read all this, hit me up on Twitter and I'll give you a shout-out on the next episode (if I remember).
26 May 202067: Premier League Bottom Half XI00:34:49
This week Dougie and Patrick collaborate to build an XI out of the teams in the bottom half of the Premier League, taking time to discuss some of the division's unheralded stars and which lower-half heroes could hope for moves to bigger sides this summer. Then there's a debate over how high the team could finish.
03 Jun 202068: Is van Dijk the Best Premier League Defender Ever?00:40:06
Hello Extra-Timers, and welcome to this week's episode, which features Dave Jackson in his podcast debut and relative veteran Henry Hill, making his second appearance. These West London boys join Patrick van Straaten to discuss the return of the Premier League, Vincent Kompany's claim that VVD is the best PL defender ever, and whether Leon Bailey would be a good Leroy Sane replacement. Then it's onto lockdown past-times, including the now obligatory Cooking Corner (TM) with Patrick van Straaten. Enjoy!
09 Jun 202069: Sancho, Werner, Koulibaly, Partey: Who Clubs Should Sign Instead00:44:08
This week Dougie and Patrick talk about the cheap alternatives to some of the biggest names on the transfer market this summer. We're all bored of Werner, Sancho, Koulibaly, and Partey, so who should your club buy instead of them, if those players prove too expensive? We turn up some interesting gems and some superstars-in-waiting, and do what is basically our recurring told-you-so segment at this point.
16 Jun 202070: Let's Try This Again: The Premier League Returns00:41:44
The Premier League is back, BACK, B A C K! Soon anyway. Patrick, Zac, and Henry look over the remaining fixtures and discuss the Champions League race and relegation battle, as well as the stand-out games and players for the run-in. Then we talk about conspiracy theories and the Moon being hollow.
23 Jun 202071: How Can Football Fight Racism?00:39:06
On this week's episode, Patrick is joined by Sam Obaseki to talk about football's response to the global political protests following the killing of George Floyd. We discuss the contribution of players, clubs, and football authorities to the process of removing racism both from the game and society, and the steps we, as fans, can take to move towards racial justice.

If you can, please consider signing petitions (for example those seeking justice for Shukri Abdi and Belly Mujinga), and writing to politicians or even your football club to demand specific commitments on tackling these problems. Whatever you've heard, sport has always been political, and governments and businesses can be forced to change their behaviour if we exert enough pressure.
30 Jun 202072: Have Barcelona Made the Worst Transfer of the Summer?00:46:34
This week Chris Hamill returns to the podcast to discuss the Arthur-Pjanic swap, how stupid it is, and what it means for both players, Barcelona, and Juventus. Then we mull over Inter's capture of Achraf Hakimi - one of the best young fullbacks in the game right now - and how the Nerazzurri's long-term future might shape up with the Moroccan in the side.

This episode is brought to you by Harry's. For your £3.95 trial set, head to harrys.com/extra.
07 Jul 202073: Is The Top Four Done For Good? Plus Thiago to Liverpool00:44:23
This week's episode sees Henry Hill and Mike Atkins join Patrick on the podcast to talk about Man United's form and Chelsea's signings, and whether anyone will be able to compete with them for 3rd and 4th spot over the coming years, given the messes at Spurs and Arsenal. Then we roll into the rumours that Thiago Alcantara could swap Munich for Merseyside, and discuss whether Robert Lewandowski should win the Ballon d'Or over Messi.
14 Jul 202074: The Summer's Best Unwanted Stars00:49:37
This week, Patrick and Dougie discuss the big clubs who could be trimming their squads this summer, and the bargains which could be had as a result. We chat over Luka Jovic's season and whether he'd still make sense for Leicester, Arsenal, or Milan; Matteo Guendouzi's fall from grace at the Emirates and a possible switch to PSG, Lyon, or Atletico; and Federico Bernardeschi and Juventus' team of arthritic pensioners who still manage to win Serie A every year. Then some quick transfer hits, including Benrahma to Arsenal (it's my podcast, I'll do as much Arsenal as I like), Aouar, Milik, and Kluivert. Enjoy!
21 Jul 202075: Lampard at Chelsea and Arteta at Arsenal: Year One Review00:58:04
On this week's episode, I am joined by legit Chelsea insider Zac Djellab to discuss Frank Lampard's first season with the Blues: their performances, their issues, their transfer business to date, and what else they need, as well as our predictions for next season.

Then Arsenal outsider George Wright hops on to chat all things Arsenal. We get into the changes under Arteta, the state of the squad, our hopes for the transfer window, and what we can expect from both the FA Cup final and the 2020/21 season. We even find time for some obligatory Unai Emery slander. The man is a clown.

28 Jul 202076: The Best and Worst Players of the Season00:53:53
This week it's a reunion episode as Joe, Chris, and Patrick talk over the Premier League's big six (plus Leicester, or Arsenal, depending on your perspective), and pick each team's best and worst player of the season.

This week's episode is sponsored by Harry's. To claim your trial set for just £3.95, including a razor handle, 5-blade cartridge, foaming shave gel, and travel cover, head to harrys.com/extra.
04 Aug 202077: How To Fix Tottenham Hotspur00:59:03
You asked for it, so we've brought it back! This week Patrick and Dougie look at how Jose Mourinho can rebuild Spurs, what a Jose Mourinho-type player actually is, and whether or not Jose Mourinho will even be at Spurs beyond next summer.

Also, if you haven't already, don't forget to subscribe to our new YouTube channel, Football Daily Podcasts. Even if you won't watch them and will continue to listen on whatever app you're currently on, dropping us a sub on there would still be appreciated. Thanks!
11 Aug 202078: Real Out Of Europe, Sarri Out Of Juventus, and Champions League Predictions!00:44:19
This week, Joe Thomlinson and Dougie Critchley join Patrick van Straaten to chat over the fallout from the Champions League round of 16. A sluggish Real Madrid got brutalised by Man City, Juve were embarrassed by Lyon, while Bayern continue to look unbeatable, and Barca continue to be bailed out by Messi. What did we learn heading into the quarter-finals? Can anyone beat Bayern? And what are Juventus doing hiring Pirlo as their new coach?

18 Aug 202079: Messi Out, Koeman In: The Mess at Barcelona00:56:10
What a week for Barcelona. In the space of a few days, Samuel Umtiti tested positive for Covid, they lost 8-2 to Bayern in the Champions League, Setien was sacked, Koeman targeted, ter Stegen ruled out until November following knee surgery, Messi said he wanted to leave, and Arthur was caught drunk-driving. On today's podcast, Patrick, Joe, and Michael McCubbin discuss Friday's game, the managerial landscape, and the mess which is the squad. Then we disagree about selling Messi.

25 Aug 202080: Coman the Bavarian and Neymar's Tears: UCL Final Review00:41:56
Chris Hamill and Mike Atkins join Patrick on the pod this week to talk about the Champions League final. We talk over the tactics, the disappointing performances from some of the stars on show, and where this Bayern side ranks among the best sides of the last decade. There's also time for beard chat.
01 Sep 202081: How To Fix: European Round-Up00:50:05
This week, Henry Hill and Patrick discuss three clubs with different aims, different budgets, and different problems. First, we look at Atletico Madrid, and how they can add more goals and plan for the possible exit of Thomas Partey. Then it's Southampton, who, as always, are looking for creativity. And finally, to Roma, trying to find long-term heirs for Dzeko, Kolarov, and Chris Smalling I guess.

08 Sep 202082: The Premier League Preview00:46:11
Today, Dougie and Patrick discuss the new Premier League season and what we can expect from the dozens of new additions made over the course of the transfer window. Top 4 and relegation predictions were covered on last week's Sunday Vibes, so instead we talk over our best and worst transfers of the summer so far, which youngsters could make breakthroughs, and our hot takes on the season ahead, which are genuinely spicy.
15 Sep 202083: One Thing We Learnt About Every Premier League Club This Weekend00:55:01
This week, Mike Atkins steps in for Patrick, who is away on holiday, and is joined by Dougie Critchley and self-proclaimed Tim Ream lookalike Henry Hill, where they take a look at every team that played this weekend. For once that means no talk of either of the Manchester clubs, but it's also the most we'll likely speak about Crystal Palace or Sheffield United all season. Enjoy!
22 Sep 202084: Are Liverpool Building Their Next Great Team?00:38:41
This week, Dougie and I (Patrick) look at Liverpool's transfer business, which after a quiet start has exploded in the last few weeks. We dig into the stats to see what attracted the club to Kostas Tsimikas, go all heart-eyes-emoji about Thiago's arrival in the Premier League (and what it means for Wijnaldum), and then discuss Diogo Jota. How good is he right now, and how good can he be? And does this mean Klopp is planning a big sale in 2021? Then we talk One Thing We Learned, with some analysis of PSG's move for Dele Alli.

29 Sep 202085: How Worried Are We About The Premier League's Big Teams?00:49:35
This week, Joe Thomlinson joins me, Patrick, to talk about four of the Prem's traditional powers: Man City, Man United, Chelsea, and Tottenham. All four have endured difficult starts to the season, are bedding in new players, and awaiting the arrival of others, but just how worried should we be by their results to date? Joe and I discuss City's weird squad, United's disappearing defence, Frank Lampard's tinkering, and the early arrival of third-season Mourinho in an attempt to get to the bottom of things.

Then Joe has opinions about the handball situation in One Thing We Learned.
07 Oct 202087: Hot Takes: Why Arsenal Should Have Sold Aubameyang, and Potter > Lampard00:51:53
This week Chris Hamill and Joe Thomlinson join me, Patrick van Straaten, for a throwback to Hot Takes, one of our least popular formats. True to form, we massively overreact to the first four games of the season, with Chris declaring Graham Potter better than Frank Lampard and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Joe claiming Everton will finish in the top 4. Then I have a look at Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's terrible start to the season, and call the entire Arsenal fanbase stupid. Same same really.

13 Oct 202088: How Worried Are We About Juventus, PSG, and Bayern?00:51:56
We follow up our episode from a fortnight ago by examining the start big European clubs have made, and asking whether there's anything seriously wrong with them. PSG have picked up four red cards and some poor results already; Bayern lost their 32-match unbeaten streak; and Juve remain a big fat question mark as Pirlo works out whether he can play himself in midfield. Are there major causes for concern, or just early teething issues? Michael McCubbin and Dougie Critchley join me to find out.
21 Oct 202089: What Is Going On With Arsenal?00:53:54
This week, I'm joined by George Wright to discuss all things Arsenal. Though currently riding high in the table, the Gunners are still pretty dull and had an odd window, with the much-heralded arrivals of Partey and Gabriel offset by the weird acquisition of Willian and departures for Torreira and Guendouzi. Just what sort of rebuild starts with shipping out young players? Then we get into the problems with the team, Arteta's (presumed) long-term plans, and the exciting crop of teenagers coming through the academy.

27 Oct 202090: Should Man City Replace Pep with Pochettino?00:46:06
This week, Joe Thomlinson and Chris Hamill join me on the podcast for what is meant to be a round-up episode, but quickly turns into yet another Arsenal conversation. Then we eventually get round to Man City, who have tried to cure their defensive woes by becoming boring. Has it worked? Is Pep done? Should the club try a non-bald manager? We answer basically none of these questions.

Then it's on to what we learned this week, which features Ajax pummelling Venlo and now regular segment Joe Apologises For His Previous Terrible Opinions.

03 Nov 202091: Hit or Miss? Rating 2020's Biggest Transfers00:47:43
This week's podcast guest is Dougie Critchley, who joins me, Patrick van Straaten, to see how the 10 most expensive players of the summer are faring so far this campaign. Chelsea and Man City both splashed out huge sums for quick fixes, but are they working out so far? Is Thomas Partey enough to sort out Arsenal's issues? And what is going on with Juventus and Barcelona, whose ridiculous Arthur-Pjanic swap only looks stranger after a few weeks of the season?

Support this week comes from Beer52. Head to beer52.com/extra to claim your crate of 8 beers for just £5.95, the cost of delivery.
10 Nov 202092: Who Will Lose the Relegation Battle?00:47:30
Joe Thomlinson and Chris Hamill join me this week to chew over the Premier League's relegation race, which has almost been forgotten amid the chaos at the top of the table. Just what exactly is going on, with Brighton playing like European challengers but struggling for points, and previously solid sides Burnley and Sheffield United propping up the table? Is there any hope for Fulham and West Brom? And could clubs like Newcastle get sucked in? We discuss.

17 Nov 202093: Why Atletico Madrid Will Win La Liga00:41:54
We've barely paid attention to Spanish football so far this campaign, but with Real Madrid and Barcelona underwhelming, Joe Thomlinson and Dougie Critchley join me this week to discuss the title race in La Liga, and why this could be Atletico Madrid's Year™. We dig into the dysfunction at the big sides, Zidane's inflexibility and Messi's possible decline, and even find time to shine a light on Real Sociedad, who might just be the best team in the league.

24 Nov 202094: Spurs Masterclass, Arsenal Disasterclass and Some Ibra Love00:55:31
On this week's episode, Patrick van Straaten and Henry Hill sit down to talk about the biggest news from the weekend. They start with Spurs' victory over a bereft Manchester City, before Henry backs Ibrahimovic to lead AC Milan to a long overdue Serie A crown. Then, when given the choice of talking about Barcelona or Arsenal, Henry allows Patrick to go on a 20 minute rant about whether or not Mikel Arteta is a good manager and how he never wanted to sign Thomas Partey at all. What else would you expect?

01 Dec 202096: Transfer Mailbag: January Transfers To Fix Your Club00:51:50
Chris Hamill joins me, Patrick, this week to go through a listener mailbag of transfer requests. We try to find a striker for Leicester, a winger for Brighton, and a Digne replacement for Everton, talking over some of Europe's statistical outliers along the way, before giving up when asked to fix Sheffield United and Fulham. Enjoy!
08 Dec 202097: Barca Bad, Bruno Brilliant, and Young Stars to Loan in January00:52:17
This week Joe Thomlinson joins me, Patrick van Straaten, for a roundup of all the big stories from the weekend (except Spurs beating Arsenal, because we've talked about Arsenal too much and was anyone really surprised by that result?). First, we've got Bruno Fernandes who is so good he sort of makes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer look worse, then Barca, who look terrible all by themselves right now. We also discuss Harry Kane's latest contribution to the world of fouling, and then chew over possible January destinations for three youngsters not getting minutes: Riqui Puig, Martin Odegaard, and William Saliba.

15 Dec 202098: Dortmund Sack Favre, and Are Sheffield United the Worst PL Team Ever?00:36:25
On this week's episode Dougie and I chat about Lucien Favre's exit from Dortmund and what's next for BVB. Did their performances really merit him losing his job? Who can they target to replace him?

Then we get into the situation at Sheffield United, where the wheels have fallen off in spectacular fashion. Is there any way back (no)? Is there any point sacking Wilder?

Finally we touch on the Madrid derby, Liverpool's draw with Fulham, and I probably mention Arsenal, I don't even remember. Who cares, they lost.

29 Dec 202099: The End of Year Awards Show01:07:16
Chris Hamill joins me this week to hand out our awards for the year in football. We cover all the usual, from best player to best manager, trying to talk about some of the overperformers as well as the superstars, before ending with a few special awards for the heroes and villains of 2020. Along the way I complain about Arsenal fans and we both express our love for Marcus Rashford and hatred of the Tories. Thanks to everyone for listening this year, we appreciated your support in a tough time.
22 Dec 2020100: Predicting 2021 in Football00:47:40
For our penultimate show of the year, Joe Thomlinson joins me, Patrick van Straaten, to predict 2021 in football. We cover the obvious stuff - the title race, the Champions League, the Euros - but also get into some potential shocks, from Arteta being sacked to Barcelona missing out on a UCL spot. Joe gets over-excited about Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and I make a bold call on what I hope is the Euro 2021 final. It's a fun one.
05 Jan 2021101: Lampard In Trouble, United's Title Challenge, and Arsenal's Resurgence00:57:42
This week Joe Thomlinson and Patrick van Straaten chew over the Christmas fixtures to discuss which teams, managers, and players have enhanced or damaged their reputations over the festive period. We discuss the crisis at Chelsea and criticism of Timo Werner, Wolves' quiet decline, Man United's potential title charge, and the impact of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe on a directionless Arsenal side. Could Frank be sacked? Is Kieran Tierney better than Roberto Carlos? It's all here.
12 Jan 2021102: Was Özil a Failure at Arsenal? Plus Serie A Title Race & Dembele00:45:09
Two guests for you this week, as I welcome Dave Jackson and Dougie Critchley to the show, to discuss Mesut Özil's impending departure from Arsenal, and the Italian title race plus Moussa Dembele's move to Atletico Madrid respectively. Dave and I talk over what Özil's signing meant to Arsenal, the myth and reality of his performances at the club, how fans fell out of love with him, and our issues with Arteta's treatment of him. Then Dougie and I chew over Milan-Juventus and Roma-Inter for clues to the destination of this season's Scudetto, have a chat about Conte's weirdly attacking tactics so far, and finish up with an analysis of what Moussa Dembele will bring to Atleti and the transfer's effects on the Spanish and French title races.
19 Jan 2021103: Where Next for Europe's Unemployed Managers?00:45:54
We're approaching sacking season in European football, and this week Chris Hamill joins me, Patrick van Straaten, to discuss possible destinations for the continent's best out-of-work coaches. Max Allegri is now approaching two years without a job, and it's hard to tell where a defensive coach - even an elite one - could go next. I out forward my case for Allegri as England manager. Then we talk over Thomas Tuchel as a candidate for Chelsea or Juventus, as well the squad issues and expectations facing rookie bosses Lampard and Pirlo. Finally, we whip through some other intriguing managers, from Sarri to Jardim, and Chris runs the rule over possible Neil Lennon replacements at Celtic.
26 Jan 2021104: Havertz, Partey, Thiago: the Best and Worst Big Transfers So Far00:54:59
This week, Henry Hill joins me to examine the performances of the most expensive summer signings so far this season. Inevitably, that takes us to Stamford Bridge, where Frank Lampard's failure to get the best out of Werner and Havertz cost him his job. How good (or bad) have they actually been? Then we move on to Arsenal, where Thomas Partey is both very good and hasn't actually made a difference to the team as a whole, and Liverpool, who seem to have found a Thiago-shaped scapegoat for all their problems. Also there's some Donny van de Beek chat, and continued confusion over what exactly the Arthur-Pjanic swap was meant to accomplish.
