13 Jun 2023 | 021: Finding the leader within with Luke Iorio | 00:51:22
Sometimes it feels like you’re on a hamster wheel chasing the next goal. But as you grow older, what you want out of life changes. You realise that your body is your lie detector. It will let you know when you haven’t processed a feeling or experience because the trauma and hurts gets stored in our bodies and in our nervous system. We often end up repeating patterns or loops because we don’t clear them. Anyone with a pulse has some level of influence or impact on someone. If you help others to show up authentically, they evolve and innovate more quickly. I always thought it was up to somebody else to make a difference until I realized that I’m somebody. We discussed topics such as how to be more present, overcoming burnout and the conscious and awakened ego.

11 Jul 2023 | 025: How to Show Up as Your Most Authentic Self with Sandhya Sudhakar | 00:43:20
Do you feel like you’re fitting into a shoebox at work? Maybe you feel like a chameleon, only showing the colors that blend in with your environment. Take a moment to stop and consider who it is you really are. In this week’s episode of ‘Evolve’, we discuss the difference between being intentional about your decisions, versus either choosing what’s easy, or you’ve been conditioned to think is the best next career move.
In this episode of Evolve I’m joined by special guest, Sandhya Sudhakar, to discuss the inspirational story about how she regained control of her future. Sandhya had a high-flying career in a corporate company, but everything changed when she took a seven-month sabbatical. Having never really felt like the most authentic version of herself, Sandhya took a break to re-discover her motivations. Having cleared out the noise in her own mind, she founded ‘Self at Work’. Now self-employed as a certified leadership and career coach, she helps others to show up as their true self at work.
Also in this week’s episode of ‘Evolve’ with Sandhya Sudhakar: - Why it’s important to use different strengths and talents in the workplace - How social conditioning can teach us to be something we’re not - The importance of taking time to understand your motivations - How to create an environment as a leader, where people feel safe to show up fully - How to build a system around inclusivity and difference - Imposter syndrome and how it’s a false indicator

07 Feb 2023 | 002: Being the Driver of Your Nervous System with Brittany Lynn Wellness | 00:35:09
We spend a lot of time thinking about our physical bodies like which foods are best to eat and how much exercise we should do, but we don’t spend a lot of time talking about our emotional body, and nervous system.

09 May 2023 | 016: Tune into the wisdom of your body with Anakha Coman | 00:47:11
Our nervous systems are always talking to each other. Did you know that? Leadership is under a lot more pressure compared to 10 or 20 years ago. Issues like the cultural trauma of COVID, racial violence and the rise of AI technology affect the workplace in different ways. It has made it increasingly important to become attuned to your emotions. But before you can do this, you need to slow down, pause and become aware of what you’re feeling. It is important for everyone to find their own pathway to themselves. I invite you to start to notice the inner landscape of your experience. Pausing and feeling helps you to embrace inaction. Because inaction is growth, space and a catalyst. Incorporating moments of pause throughout your day is like a bank deposit. You don’t get that instant gratification but it has long-term rewards. Do not freeze yourself in some sort of fixed identity and let yourself continue to grow and evolve. We discuss topics such as the leadership gym, how to attune your emotions and what it means to rehumanize yourself.

11 Apr 2023 | 012: How NLP helped me create Evolve with Leisse Wilcox | 00:41:50
NLP is the user’s manual to your mind. It is a shortcut to help you to truly know yourself - how your mind works, processes information and experiences. Our thoughts and internal dialogue are an extension of the core beliefs that we hold in an unconscious capacity. We cannot access 90% of the iceberg that's hidden below the surface. Perceived blocks or obstacles become ingrained in the fabric or the fiber of our being from unconscious experiences we've had in our very earliest childhood days. Nervous system healing happens at an unconscious level and refers to somebody else's version of reality that they pass on to us until we decide to do things differently. We discussed a range of topics from what NLP stands for, my upcoming book and how we can create our own narrative from a healed and informed place.

18 Apr 2023 | 013: Evolving your leadership through a writing practice with Alyssa Burkus | 00:45:51
Writing about trauma isn’t easy. It’s a big, heavy word. But I wanted it to feel more accessible so people can relate it to their own work. Writing a book can feel like your thoughts are a jumble of puzzle pieces and sometimes, you need someone to help you to fit them all together. This is what Alyssa helped me with and I jokingly call her my book doula. We went through alternating levels of confidence when working on the book and experienced deep feeling, thinking and learning together. It helped me realise that writing is not only therapeutic but a way to self-regulate and raise your self-awareness. I invite any leader to introduce writing habits into their work. We discussed topics such as the process of writing my book, how our partnership evolved, the benefits of writing and what habits you can incorporate to self-regulate.

16 Jan 2024 | 050: The Nervous System's Influence on Leadership with Dr. Steve Hotz (RERUN) | 01:01:34
In this episode, previously released in August of 2023, we explore the complex interplay between the nervous system and leadership, revealing the profound impact of past experiences on a leader's style and adaptability with Dr. Steve Hotz. The patterns ingrained in our nervous system are key to how we respond in various situations, significantly influencing decision-making and behavior in leadership roles. This understanding is crucial for leaders seeking to harness their full potential. We also delve into the nuanced way our nervous systems perceive challenges versus threats. This ability to recognize and fine-tune responses to different stimuli is essential in leadership, helping in guiding teams through complex scenarios and making informed decisions. Maintaining a balanced nervous system is another critical aspect discussed, highlighting its importance in accessing higher-level skills and expertise for effective leadership. We touch upon the impact of trauma on this balance, which can significantly affect a leader's ability to handle stress and lead effectively. The conversation then shifts to vulnerability in leadership, emphasizing how understanding and accepting our vulnerabilities can reduce their control over our actions. We explore common reactions to vulnerability, such as defensiveness and emotional numbing, and how they influence our leadership style. We also cover the power of co-regulation and the role of psychological safety and consistency in the workplace. A leader's ability to exhibit a calm and regulated demeanor can significantly influence the team's overall environment and effectiveness. This is complemented by a discussion on the importance of senior leadership understanding and facilitating nervous system regulation. Such awareness is crucial for adapting and responding to various situations, shaped by personal experiences and nervous system reactivity. Drawing insights from 'The Compassionate Mind' by Paul Gilbert, the podcast reflects on his model of three emotional regulation systems – energizing, threat, and contentment – and their influence on leadership styles. Understanding these systems is invaluable for effective leadership and emotional regulation. We also discuss the importance of fostering a culture that supports mutual regulation and secure connections among team members, essential for a productive work environment and beneficial for organizational dynamics. Finally, the episode concludes with practical advice for leaders. This includes techniques for becoming more aware of bodily experiences and staying present in the moment. Such practices are essential for effective leadership and decision-making, helping leaders to be more grounded, responsive, and empathetic. These insights enhance a leader's ability to lead effectively and inspire their teams, embodying the core message of our podcast – the intricate and influential relationship between our nervous system and leadership.

As leaders it is important to recognise that your employees are all unique individuals. By understanding that people perform differently when experiencing either survival or attachment emotions, we can support them accordingly so they feel safe and happy. 24 Apr 2023 | 014: Why it’s time to talk about trauma-informed leadership with Glain Roberts-McCabe | 00:56:03
Trauma-informed leadership is a heavy topic. And while it's something I know incredibly well and have built a career around, I felt edgy and vulnerable at the thought of writing a book about it. But, I saw a gap on the trauma-informed leadership bookshelf. And I knew I had something that would serve people well. So I made that space mine. And that's where my good friend and mentor, Glain, comes in. Glain understood my mission to demystify trauma and was the perfect choice to help me and write the book's foreword. I wanted to remove the stigma and bring it into the context of what we all deal with on a regular basis. Trauma is something every one of us experiences - to varying degrees. And when we declare people to be our most important resource it is important for leaders to be trauma-informed. Leadership has evolved a lot since the military model that was based on hierarchy and command and control. Now we are more invested in self development, we go deeper than the shallow surface level development of the past. This is something we dive into in today’s podcast episode about why it’s time to start talking about trauma-informed leadership.

23 May 2023 | 018: Getting Unstuck through Energetic Alignment with Sheevaun Moran | 00:35:21
Your presence is felt five milliseconds before you walk in the door. That’s all energy. We live, breathe and exist from different circles. People think that everything happens in one big ball, but every ball has many layers that we can peel back to see what’s underneath to get to the core. Energetics is at the root of it all. When we send a text, it can come across as rude. But there's no context around it in the energy field, like the piercing arrow. Most leaders tend to use that piercing arrow, even though that's not what they really meant to do. Anything can wonderfully shift in your world if you learn to deal with the energy before you deal with the communication. This prevents negative energy bleeding into your next interaction. When we are in energetic alignment, we can achieve amazing results. At the core of it, we are the most amazing science experiment ever. 02 May 2023 | 015: The Paradox of humility and control with Martin Aldergard | 00:43:14
When an organization goes through complexity of change, it puts a lot of demand on leaders to lead change in a different way than in the past. To show seemingly opposite styles. But humility and confidence are a powerful combination that shift the dynamics of a team. An effective way of incorporating more humility into your leadership style is by listening more than you speak and by being empathetic to someone else’s point of view. Try to take feedback on board without becoming defensive. Reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses and invest in the support of a coach or mentor. Clarify your own personal values and identify what behaviours are aligned with them. Practice appreciation and gratitude by acknowledging individual contributions so everyone feels valued and has a sense of belonging. After all, everyone’s a piece of the puzzle and when it fits together, we can do amazing things as a team.

In this week’s episode, Dan Pontefract and I are challenging the traditional notions of work-life balance and authenticity in the context of leadership. Our conversation is particularly special to me because Dan wrote the forward for my book – you can hear that story at the beginning of our conversation. Dan and I unpack the myths surrounding work/life balance concepts and offer a fresh perspective on what it truly means to thrive both personally and professionally. Through engaging insights, he explains why separating work and life isn't conducive to authentic self-expression and fulfillment in today's interconnected world. The episode takes a fascinating turn as we explore why asking the question "Are you engaged at work?" misses the mark. Dan presents a paradigm shift, encouraging us to rethink the way we view engagement and fulfillment in our careers. Therefore, how do we reverse-engineer work-life balance? Dan introduces a groundbreaking approach that involves understanding the interconnectedness of various life factors. He introduces the concept of "work-life bloom" and delves into the four quadrants that contribute to a holistic sense of thriving. Our conversation takes a critical look at traditional career trajectories versus the concept of a career mosaic. Dan also explores the idea of nonlinear career paths and how embracing a mosaic approach can lead to greater fulfillment and authenticity. Dan Pontefract is a renowned leadership strategist, author, and keynote speaker with over two decades of experience in senior executive roles at companies such as SAP, TELUS, and Business Objects. Since then, he has worked with organizations worldwide, including Salesforce, Amgen, the State of Tennessee, Nestle, Canada Post, Autodesk, BMO, the Government of Canada, Manulife, Nutrien, and the City of Toronto, among others. 30 May 2023 | 019: The Power of a Morning Ritual with Tiffany Lanier | 00:48:35
The morning is your starting place. It is a time to check in with yourself about how you feel and what you need in that moment. If you don’t look after yourself, you feel depleted before you even get to your to-do list of the day. Every day is different so ask yourself what you need today. Some days you need more sleep, to get more hydrated or feel more connected. When you have a busy job, it can be more difficult to incorporate a morning ritual. This often leads to burn-out and feeling drained because you don’t have space for yourself. Finding a morning ritual that works for your company is your collective responsibility. There is no one-size-fits all ritual that works for everyone. We discussed topics such as the importance of morning rituals, what to ask yourself first thing in the morning and how to incorporate it into a workplace environment.

Matt Smead, a business psychologist recognized as a leading thinker by HR Magazine in 2023, shares his insights on wellbeing, engagement, and resilience in a corporate setting.
🌟 We get into the significance of promoting health and wellbeing in the workplace, focusing on the balance between productivity and work-life balance. He emphasizes the importance of addressing psychosocial risks, promoting psychological health and safety, and adopting a risk-based approach in addressing potential hazards.
The discussion also touches on the need for flexibility and innovation in the workplace environment, in line with addressing the growing concern for employee burnout. Lastly, Smead shares the advantage of co-creating solutions with the workforce to effectively address these concerns. 🔑 Key Themes & Takeaways: Optimizing Well-Being for Sustainable Success: 🌟 Matt Smeed introduces a paradigm shift, emphasizing that true, long-term excellence in the workplace hinges on optimizing well-being. This approach views both well-being and productivity as outcomes of effectively managing workplace pressures. The Causal Link between Well-Being and Business Metrics: 📈 Matt discusses the correlation, and potentially causal relationship, between employee well-being and key business outcomes, such as retention, reduced sickness absence, and a stronger employer brand. He suggests that organizations can foster well-being by granting autonomy, ensuring positive leadership, and preventing overload. In our latest episode of "Evolve: A New Era of Leadership," we had the incredible opportunity to dive deep with Wendy Ryan, a seasoned HR and organizational development expert, CEO, and author of "Learn, Lead, Lift."
📘 Wendy shared her journey of writing the book she wished she had at 22. "Learn, Lead, Lift" is not just a guide for fresh graduates but a lifelong companion for anyone on a leadership path. It's about mindset, leadership, and making impactful changes at every career stage.
💡 The conversation was illuminating, especially around how our mindsets shape our reality. Wendy highlighted the importance of being aware of our mental lenses and how they filter our perceptions, emphasizing that understanding our mindsets can help us choose how we think about things.
🧠 But it's not just about mindset. Wendy and Carolyn discussed the critical role of emotions in leadership. Gone are the days when leaders were told to leave their feelings at the door. Emotions are data, and understanding them is crucial for making informed decisions.
🌍 Wendy's insights into leadership in a VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity) world were particularly striking. She talked about the need for leaders to be constantly attentive, both to their own actions and the needs of those around them.
🏆 The "3T model" - Tolerate, Transform, Transcend - Wendy discussed is a powerful tool for decision-making. This framework helps leaders assess situations and decide whether to maintain the status quo, make changes, or completely overhaul their approach.
🙌 But perhaps most importantly, Wendy's work in recognizing and addressing systemic oppression and power dynamics in leadership is pivotal. She encourages leaders to be more intentional and aware of their privilege and how it impacts others.
This episode is a goldmine for leaders seeking to evolve and adapt in an ever-changing world. Wendy Ryan's insights provide practical tools and profound wisdom for anyone looking to lead with more awareness, empathy, and effectiveness.

16 May 2023 | 017: Choosing heart-centred leadership with Sesil Pir | 00:50:59
I don’t believe in the concept of bad leadership. No one comes to work to have a bad day. But people still struggle and it made me wonder why. It made me delve into authentic leadership. Authenticity is not a process of discovery but a process of acceptance. Human beings as a primate have three core motivations: self-interest, our need for connection and having a purpose that is greater than ourselves. Human-centred leadership means we create individuals or a state of being that honors not only the whole of an individual but also the core of an individual, which is unique for everyone. When studying organizations with sustainable growth and longer tenure, we identified eight core attributes or behaviours. Without these core attributes, your performance suffers and people might not feel heard and leave. It is not the great exit but the great awakening. We discussed the four dimensions, eight core attributes or behaviors and how living your purpose as a leader allows you to create a shared story.

02 Jan 2024 | 048: Mitigating Workplace Burnout with Dr. Jacqueline Kerr | 00:54:28
In an era where employment-related stress and burnout are increasingly prevalent, it’s essential to understand and address these highly damaging issues at the corporate level. In the first episode of the year, Dr. Jacqueline Kerr, a globally recognized behavior change scientist, community advocate, and TEDx speaker joins me for a conversation about burnout, public health, and the role of organizations in mitigating burnout. Dr. Kerr deeply resonates with the intersection of public health and personal behaviour change, particularly with respect to the effects of workplace burnout. Burnout can affect every facet of a person's life and might be induced by pressures from multiple areas of life in its myriad versions. Dr. Kerr emphasized the value of intervention, noting the vital role that organizations can play in learning from and adopting community-based approaches to prevent burnout. Driving home the importance of collective efforts in combating burnout, Dr. Kerr highlighted the pivotal role of leaders. Leaders are encouraged to forge a healthier atmosphere in the workplace, thus decreasing the possibility of burnout. Flexible work hours, limiting non-essential meetings, and fostering a culture of appreciation can all contribute to a more engaged and less stressed workforce. Furthermore, a thriving culture of inclusiveness is essential along with recognizing the link between bias and burnout. The approach must be comprehensive, considering individual, family, organizational, and societal level factors. Workplace culture is often linked to changes in behavior patterns. As with managing any change, understanding where people stand in relation to the concept of change is crucial in bringing about effective behavioral adjustments. The key is to create a safe environment where employees feel comfortable discussing changes they'd like to see in the workplace. Dr. Kerr highlighted the importance of reducing unnecessary meetings and encouraging more focused work time to boost productivity and reduce burnout. She recommended considering the reduction of meeting hours and introduced the concept of a "meeting-free week” as a productive approach to address the perceived need for continuous meetings within teams. Moreover, job crafting, cases of biased promotion systems, and other nuanced aspects of workplace practices can significantly impact burnout levels. Encouraging transparency, promoting flexibility, and valuing employee contributions can significantly ameliorate these effects. As much as organizational changes are vital, individual mental habit changes also play a critical role in mitigating burnout. Acknowledging that behavior change is tough and requires support, Dr. Kerr emphasized the importance of setting realistic daily behavior plans. It is our aim to provide practical inputs and insights on mitigating workplace burnout, emphasizing collective responsibility and action. Through strategic implementation of behavioral sciences, workplaces can become more vibrant, engaging, and less stressful environments, where every individual can truly thrive.
Dr Jacqueline Kerr is a mom, behavior scientist and burnout survivor. She is in the Top 1% of Most Cited Scientists worldwide and her work has informed the US Center for Disease Control Community Prevention Guide. Dr. Kerr left her position as a public health professor in 2018. This holiday note is an annual tradition that has become a part of our shared journey in the Evolve Community. This isn't just any message, though—it's a beacon of celebration and reflection, a moment to pause and appreciate the whirlwind of the year we've navigated together. Amidst the flurry of wrapping paper, the scent of spiced cider, and the echoes of carols, I am reminded of the incredible connections we've made, the stories we've told, and the growth we've witnessed within our vibrant community. This year, inspired by the wisdom of Britt Frank, a remarkable guest on my podcast and author of The Science of Stuck, I find myself contemplating the notion of being 'stuck'—a feeling all too familiar to many of us. Whether it's in our careers, our relationships, or the inner workings of our minds and souls, it seems to be a recurring theme. But here's the holiday twist: staying 'stuck' isn't where our story ends this year. As we raise our glasses to the year that's been, my holiday wish for you is to embrace the journey of self-awareness and hope. With each small, purposeful step—finding small moments of gratitude, igniting curiosity to understand new perspectives, and striving to move through life with grace and intention—we can all venture towards a future not limited by the past. Let's carry this spirit of transformation into the New Year, fostering health, happiness, and a sense of renewal for ourselves and our communities. Here's to a 2024 filled with moments that move us, experiences that elevate us, and the collective hope that we will emerge, together, joyously unstuck. 04 Apr 2023 | 011: What’s a trauma informed system with Snjezana Pruginic | 00:48:51
You can approach trauma in different ways. The somatic approach through body based therapies, through training, wellness or through the mind. If we want to create change, we need to heal together, we can’t heal alone. We are all interconnected but are also impacted by our environment. Wellness examines the relationship between one's own journey and inner work and the external space that one is in. Most of us create our identities around the work that we do so it is paramount that we feel safe and empowered at work. A lack of engagement in the workplace is often a lack of empowerment. People feel empowered when there’s an element of choice, which provides a sense of autonomy. Introduce a habit of collaborative processes because it feels different to feel safe or cared for for everyone. If a workplace is trauma informed, your job becomes easier so you can make the money you need and go home and focus on supporting your family. We discuss a range of topics from trauma informed systems, breathing spaces and different ways to tackle performance management.
We discuss:
