During the height of the Second World War, American shipping to Europe was constantly being attacked by German U-boats.  In an attempt to completely bypass German subs, aviation pioneer Howard Hughes began construction on what would be the world’s largest aircraft.  A plane that was so large it could carry 750 passengers or two full-sized tanks across the Atlantic.  Sadly, it was hampered by wartime rationing of metals and only flew in one memorable test flight. On November 11th, 1918, the first world war came to an end. Or to be more precise, the fighting stopped. For the next eight months, a final peace treaty was hammered out, and hanging over the negotiations was the very real threat that fighting could break out again. When Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act of 1862, there was a rush of people who moved west to claim the free land that was offered.  However, there was a problem. The first world war, known simply as the Great War at that time, was the most horrific war the world had ever seen. When the conflict ended, there was an effort to make sure that such a thing never happened again.  To that end, a deliberative body was created where nations could come together to debate and discuss matters before plunging, once again, into war.  While having some success, this deliberative body ultimately failed at its stated goal of avoiding another world war. The Allied invasion of Normandy was one of the most complex military operations ever conducted. Thousands of ships and planes had to work in conjunction with tens of thousands of soldiers who had to do one of the most difficult things in warfare: an amphibious landing.  In addition to all of the planning that went into the invasion, there were many unknowns. In the Spring of 1846, a group of intrepid pioneers set out from Independence, Missouri, to cross the Oregon Trail to seek a better life in the fertile Oregon Territory.  However, almost nothing went according to plan for this group. Located on the island of La Gomera in the Spanish Canary Islands is one of the most unusual languages on Earth.  For centuries, the people on this island have been able to communicate over vast distances not by shouting, using smoke signals, or drums, but rather by whistling.  This system allowed them to communicate just as easily as if they were talking, and it is still being used today.
