17 Feb 2018John Willis Interview - A-List First Call Session Player over 30 years  - ELG#16301:16:54

Talk about someone who’s decisive! John literally packed up and moved across country and then from Alabama to Nashville, to hustle up some work. But what’s really amazing is the story of how he was recommended for steady session work… by not one, not two, but 3 separate keyboard players who also happened to be producers… in 3 separate towns at 3 different times. Think the Universe was trying to tell him something…?

Great lesson about some changes John made in his life, and the tremendous benefits he’s gotten in return. This was a great conversation with a class guy who’s been an A-List First Call session player for over 30 years, in the most competitive music town in America. Great stories and lessons, and more...

18 Feb 2023Jeff Berlin - Overcoming CHILDHOOD TRAUMA & WHY he DIDN’T JOIN VAN HALEN01:56:26

On this Jeff Berlin interview: his early childhood trauma and how it impacted him, “falling apart” from years of emotional pain and his subsequent recovery… his awkward first meeting with Eddie Van Halen, early lessons learned playing jingles in NYC after Berklee… great story how he hooked up with Bill Bruford and the doors that opened up for him as a result, his Top 3 Musical experiences (VERY cool), funniest things that happened to him in the studio and on stage, backstories to some of the tracks on his new Jack Songs LP & hard-earned lessons he learned from making this record… best decision he ever made, great advice for musicians, and LOADS of stories. Awesome interview, very courageous and sincere

Cool Guitar, Music & ELG T-Shirts!: http://www.GuitarMerch.com

Originally from NYC, Jeff is one of the most highly-regarded jazz and fusion bassists of the modern era, and a well-respected bass educator. He's known for his tone and technique, and has been one of the major figures in firmly establishing the electric bass as a solo instrument. His career took off in 1977 when Yes founding drummer Bill Bruford handpicked him to play in his band. Jeff’s other recording and performance credits include a who’s who of jazz and rock: Larry Coryell, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Yes, Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa & many more.

Just to address this up front, Jeff’s done dozens of interviews on the controversial comments he’s made about bass players learning by academic teaching vs being self- taught. We’re not going to address this issue, because Jeff’s owned a lot of his mistakes here and has made public apologies to the people he needed to. But what we will talk about today is the genesis of what prompted the fairly dramatic shift in his position, and his ongoing emotional recovery from the things that contributed to this situation in the first place.

05 Jan 2021Ian Moore: “It was so ferocious, feral, and visceral...”02:09:09

Ian gets up close and personal during this conversation and talks about the things that allowed him to hang in there during those parts of his journey when it was looking pretty bleak… the tremendous influence of his dad, who was one of the top Buddhist scholars in the country… the backstory to some of his greatest hits, his resiliency, his wife and other close family ties, the power of being vulnerable, some of his amazingly cool vintage guitars… and why his future’s looking bright. One of the most REAL and open people you’ll get to meet, and definitely one of the TOP blues players in the country, who’s equally adept at singing and writing. Talk about a comeback - Ian Moore really has “been there & done that.” A child prodigy on classical violin, Ian slashed all the tendons in his right hand in a bizarre accident… which ultimately led him to guitar. His first album shot to the top of the charts, immediately - suddenly he’s opening for The Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Bob Dylan. Then, through mismanagement on the label’s end, Ian has to spend the next 15 years completely rebuilding his career. Today, he’s back stronger than ever because of this

12 Aug 2023Andy Summers Interview, The Police - Selling ERIC CLAPTON his FIRST LES PAUL01:13:53

On this Andy Summers interview: Mistakes he made along the way, best decision he ever made, playing to an audience of ZERO and how this was a Daunting Experience… how growing up in rural English countryside impacted his life and his passion for music, how Eric Clapton bought his first Les Paul from Andy, having multiple #1 Songs but waiting at least TWO YEARS to get paid by the record company, a critical “very British” pep talk from Sir George Martin, The Trouble in Guitars… the origins of Andy’s effects pedals and how he got good at rhythm guitar, his top 3 guitars (of his collection of 200!), foreign films, why you should “never lose site of the target,” being a good person. Awesome, fun conversation

As a member of The Police, Andy Summers was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. He’s also recorded solo albums, collaborated with other musicians, composed film scores, produced LPs, authored books and short stories, and he’s also exhibited his photography in galleries world-wide. Some fun facts about Andy: He’s released 14 solo LPs... recorded 2 LPs with Robert Fripp, who he’s known since they were kids in the UK... he’s scored major motion picture soundtracks including Weekend at Bernie’s & Down & Out in Beverly Hills... played lead guitar on an Eric Burdon & The Animals LP called Love Is... early in his career, he played with Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band, which was a bluesy psychedelic band - and that band then turned into Dantalian’s Chariot, another psychedelic band. And most of my questions originated from stories I read in Andy’s well-written biography, One Train Later. There’s also a film adaptation of the book, called Can’t Stand Losing You: Surviving The Police. Andy’s sold over 75 million records, world-wide.

One of the most disciplined players I’ve ever met, Jim practices daily - usually arising at 4.30am to do so. Jim is a unique and creative player who crushes it on his 1959 Telecaster. He actually saw Roy Buchanan in concert close to 20 times. The lessons he picked up from Roy, were simply incredible - especially this one thing about vibrato, which I have NEVER heard before. 27 Jul 2020Peter Karp: Dealing with the loss of his wife changed him forever01:58:44

On this Peter Karp interview, Peter discussed the deep musical & personal polar opposite influences of growing up in the NYC area and in the deep south… touring with Mick Taylor and what that experience was like, losing his wife and the profound impact of this loss, trusting your gut, being stubborn & doing things your own way, Italy, basketball, & why you need to always expect the unexpected, LOTS of fun, VERY cool convo

Peter Karp grew up in New Jersey and in rural Alabama, becoming fully immersed in the music scene in both locations. After playing clubs in NYC like CBGBs, he took a 12 year hiatus from the music business. Then, after an intense period of songwriting, he released a record that caught the attention of Mick Taylor. Mick would end up playing on Peter’s next LP, The Turning Point, and shortly thereafter the two toured. Peter also recorded 2 LPs and toured with Sue Foley, charting #5 & #1… and then released a live LP made with Mick Taylor at New York’s Bottom Line. Funds from the project go towards a charity Peter started in his wife’s memory. He new LP is Magnificent Heart, a very cool blues guitar record, filled with some intense songwriting

12 Oct 2020Joe Blanton: “So I’m in the hot tub with Flava Flav, and yes he had the clock…” 02:22:42

On this Joe Blanton Interview, never suspecting his prime years in the music business would start in his 40’s… why getting a record deal isn’t always what you think it is, not sweating the small stuff so much, letting go, running away to Florida (and it turning out to be a great trip), and why Joe plays guitar instead of only singing

Originally an art student, Joe’s band The Royal Court of China signed with A&M. He then wound up writing songs with Warner Hodges, Jason Ringenberg & Dan Baird, after meeting them all in Nashville. Today, Joe owns Underground Treehouse records and is a successful producer, engineer & songwriter. He also plays in The Bluefields (Dan Baird, Warner E. Hodges) & The Hangfires (Jen Gunderman, Dan, Greg Morrow), worked on The Chefs new album with Dan Baird & Stan Lynch and just released his own solo LP, “Good, Bad, Right or Wrong,” which is great
