04 Mar 2024Wrong Chord Right | Dharma Talk00:29:03

Originally recorded on March 4, 2023, I share Herbie Hancock’s story of playing a “wrong chord” during a Miles Davis solo, and what Hancock learned about music and life from that experience. For me, Davis’s response is the very essence of creative generosity, and it says something about what it means to bring a spirit creative generosity to ourselves and others in our practice.

22 Nov 2022The More We Hear | Dharma Talk with Josh 00:28:18

In preparation for the winter holiday season, Josh reflects on the Buddha’s insight of conditionality, or karma, and how this helps release ourselves and others from vicious cycles of blame. Learning to listen to the nature of conditionality is at the core of the Buddha’s path of liberation.

20 Nov 2023Oren Jay Sofer | Your Heart Was Made For This01:20:06

Oren Jay Sofer | Your Heart Was Made for This

I welcome Insight Meditation and communication teacher, Oren Jay Sofer, back to Everyday Sublime, to discuss his new book: Your Heart Was Made For This – Contemplative Practices for Meeting a World in Crisis with Courage, Integrity and Love.

In the face of overlapping multiple crises – from personal, to collective, to environmental – it is very easy to feel overwhelmed and despairing. Oren’s new book is a true handbook for the modern contemplative, providing reflections, stories, and practices so that we can meet and face the moment of our times with a wise and compassionate heart.

As he says early in the book, “If we do not shape the heart, the world will do it for us, and the world does not have our highest welfare in mind.”

Note: Your Heart Was Made For This is a wonderful companion for teachers, offering themes, reflections and practices for your mindfully-based classes.

17 Jul 2023The Improvising Duckling | Dharma Story00:36:09

In this talk, I discuss practice as a form of improvisation and suggest ways of working with “forms” of practice as a way of developing one’s skills at improvisation. I conclude with a Sufi story about a duckling, leaving open the question of how improvising in practice reveals our true nature.

Originally recorded on July 8, 2024, Josh offers reflections about how to apply meditation and retreat practice to the fire of everyday life activity. All too often we are told to “be as mindful as possible,” and the Buddha has some better advice for us – advice that he gave to his son Rahula.

05 Feb 2024Anatomy of a Cookie Monster | A Dharma Story00:42:28

Recently, one of my sisters and nieces visited us in Maine from Brooklyn, New York. It was a wonderful visit, but on the second day, Uncle Josh ate his niece’s last chocolate-covered graham cracker and there was a price to pay.

In examining the anatomy of the cookie monster, I expose my own blind-spots and biases and suggest how dharma practice can help bring us to a more balanced relationship to the strong currents of views and opinions that often flood through our minds.

In this talk, I mention a book by Ajahn Sucitto, Parami, which can be downloaded for free here.

28 Apr 2023The "me" That Clings | Dharma Talk00:46:24

The Buddha once said: “Nothing whatsoever should be clung to as ‘I’ or ‘mine’.” In this talk, analyze this statement as an important signpost on the map of practice.

As Georg Feuerstein put it: “The sense that ‘I’ can go beyond where ‘I’ am right now is the place from which to start your practice.”

13 Apr 2023The Mourning Joy of Insight | Dharma Talk00:41:27

In this dharma talk, I reflect on a teaching from my dharma mentor Jack Engler: “the entirety of the spiritual path is a path of mourning.” This talk is an attempt to explore that reflection in light of the practice and experiential dynamics that occur when we let go of grasping at views, perceptions, orientations and practices, etc.

In this episode, I am excited to share an introductory talk about our second module in our Yin Yoga + Qi Cultivation training: Refining Metal | The Wisdom of Qi Cultivation.

In October, we’ll be teaching this module LIVE, exploring the energetic and meditative dimensions of Qi Cultivation. The Chinese word for spirit is “shen.” In Chinese Medicine our spirit resides in our heart. With practice, we gather, channel, flow and settle our spirit within the heart, awakening and deepening our capacity to wake up, grow up and clean up.

14 Jul 2023Clinging in Myanmar | Dharma Story00:44:55

In this talk, I reflect how, on a vipassana meditation retreat in Myanmar, I became compulsively obsessed with finding the perfect height for my meditation cushion; I explore what this behavior reveals about the “clinging” mind.”

12 Apr 2024Chas Di Capua | A Practice For Now01:20:22

I am delighted to welcome Insight Meditation teacher Chas DiCapua on the podcast to discuss a wide-range of topics, exploring how the dharma can help us meet the tragedies of our “now” – an interrelated group of crises of ecology, nationalism, racialization, and, in some ways, masculinity.

Chas has been practicing Buddhist meditation for almost 30 years. He has trained with Burmese meditation masters, western monastics of the Thai Forest tradition and senior western vipassana teachers. He has spent over two years in silent, intensive retreat.

Chas has served as the Insight Meditation Society’s Resident Teacher at IMS since 2003. Chas is a graduate of the four year joint Insight Meditation Society / Spirit Rock Teacher Training Program. He teaches retreats at IMS and at various centers and sanghas throughout the country.

As a way to address the wide spread suffering that is endemic in many partnered relationships, Chas explores how the dharma can be practiced in relationship, including how the masculine and feminine energies manifest in relationship, in spiritual practice, and in the world.

If you’re local to Maine, Chas is also the guiding teacher at the Open Door Sangha of Portland, Maine.

04 Apr 2023Voluntary Free Fall | Dharma Talk00:47:15

In this talk, I explore some common views about meditation and thinking, and I encourage bringing inquiry to the views of practice that we may be clinging to. Releasing views is somewhat like voluntarily jumping into free fall. The self will grasp, but in releasing the grasping, we align with the Buddha’s famous teaching: “Nothing whatsoever should be clung to as ‘I’ or ‘mine’.”

18 Apr 2024The Heart's Precept | Dharma Talk00:42:22

Originally recorded on April 15, 2024, in this dharma talk, Josh offers a fresh perspective on how to cultivate an ethical commitment within your meditation practice.

Instead of referencing an orthodox list of do’s and don’ts, Josh uses each of the five training precepts in Buddhism as a way to open to a deeper exploration of your heart’s desire.

Many members of the sangha have expressed ambivalence or uncertainty around what their heart’s deepest desire is, and this talk is an introduction to a way of practicing to really listen in a way that allows your heart’s desire to speak.

FREE Practice Pack: Everyday Vitality – 4 Ways to Feel Better Now.

In this episode, Josh and Miles explore the problem of being somebody and the role of the ego in creating internal conflict and external turmoil. We highlight the importance of addressing the cause of suffering and turmoil rather than focusing on the symptoms. We also touch on the concept of the ego as an avatar or projected image of oneself and the consequences of identifying with this false sense of self, along with the repression of shadow aspects and the process of uncovering and integrating them.

Miles emphasizes the importance of recognizing and healing the shadow, as well as the need to be fully present and aware in order to transcend the ego. We conclude this chat discussing the potential for collective awakening and the role of consciousness in transforming humanity.

06 Feb 2024The Bitter-Sweetness of Waking Up with Greg Burdulis01:16:43

Greg Burdulis, a former Buddhist monk, leads you to be calmer, happier, and kinder. He listens, questions, teaches, and trains. He works with individuals and couples using somatics, Buddhism, and humor.

Greg leads a meditation+discussion session for 60-90 minutes each Monday at noon EST.  As his guest, you can attend the first month for free. Just email Greg@thePowerofPresence.net for the link.

Greg’s website:  https://thepowerofpresence.net/

Note from Josh:

When I practiced in Burma, there was an American monk, U Punnasiri (Greg Burdulis) who struck me as an exemplary role model of practicing with every moment.

I couldn’t help notice the devotional care Greg brought to washing his monk’s bowl, or the deliberate reverence he brought to adjusting his robes, or to the seemingly superhuman way he would sit absolutely still in the afternoon, sometimes upwards of four hours without moving a limb.

In Burma, I knew nothing about Greg other than what I could observe in silence. But he inspired me deeply, illuminating a potential I knew that everyone possessed.

After that two-month retreat, I returned home, and Greg stayed on for a few more years before he disrobed and ultimately returned to the States. Over the years, we’ve kept in touch, and I consider him a real dharma brother.

With great honor, I taped a conversation with Greg for the podcast in which we had a heart to heart about the highs and lows of practice. Greg unflinchingly shares about depression, jealousy and other difficult conditions he has encountered in his life after the monastery. We also talk about the sublime beauty and liberative potential available in every moment of practice.

This is a conversation that sweeps through the messy reality of waking up, growing up and cleaning up.

08 Nov 2024Perdita Finn | A Desert Rose01:13:43

In this very personal episode, I am joined by Perdita Finn. Perdita and her husband Clark’s work with their organization The Way of the Rose has had an enormous impact on my own practice.

Perdita and I both felt we were joined by the presence of my niece, Adelia (8) who left this earth all too soon. (For this reason alone, this is an episode unlike any other I’ve done).

Together we explore the significance of loss, the power of the rosary as a spiritual practice, and the importance of motherhood and collective healing in navigating the complexities of modern life. Perdita emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of spirituality that transcends conventional frameworks, inviting listeners to reconnect with their desires and the mysteries of existence. We delve into the themes of reincarnation, intergenerational healing, the power of prayer, and how listening to children can reveal deep truths about our past and how ancestral connections can guide us in the present. The discussion also touches on the importance of manifesting desires through spiritual practices, the creativity that arises from prayer, and the revolutionary potential of women's voices in shaping new narratives. Ultimately, they emphasize the need for a collective reimagining of our stories and connections to foster healing and transformation in our lives and communities.

Perdita Finn is the co-founder, with her husband Clark Strand, of the feral fellowship The Way of the Rose, which inspired their book The Way of the Rose: The Radical Path of the Divine Feminine Hidden in the Rosary. They are currently at work on their next book together Circles Not Lines: Spiritual Community Beyond Patriarchy.  To find out more about her devotion to “ecology not theology” visit www.wayoftherose.org

03 Feb 2023Robert Wright | On My Cognitive Empathy Struggles01:31:47

In this episode, I republish a conversation I had with Robert Wright on his Nonzero Podcast. Bob and I discuss my struggles with cognitive empathy in everyday life. Not my struggle with the concept, mind you. I know that the ability to imagine another person’s perspective is enormously important in communication and relationships.

We explore my struggles with practicing cognitive empathy – especially when I’m under a lot of stress and/or seeing things through distorted lenses. I talk about how easily distorted perception feeds into cycles of conflict and misunderstanding, even with the ones we love the most.

Bob is now working on a new book loosely tilted, The Radical Power of Cognitive Empathy, and I encourage all globally-minded Yin practitioners to check out his Nonzero Newsletter on Substack.

18 Jul 2023Don Goewey | The Dharma of Anthony De Mello01:30:04

In this episode, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Don Goewey (Executive Director of the De Mello Spirituality Center). We discuss DeMello’s significance as a spiritual figure of the 20th century, and how he offers a unique view of eastern and western spirituality. Don and I reflect on DeMello’s dharma, the experience of seeing one’s shadow, and the rude awakenings that occur when everything falls apart.

27 Jan 2023Linda Modaro + Nelly Kaufer | Reflective Meditation01:07:45

In this episode, I am joined by my friends and colleagues Linda Modaro and Nelly Kaufer to talk about their new book, Reflective Meditation - Cultivating Kindness and Curiosity in the Buddha’s Company.

Linda Modaro’s website: https://satisangha.org/

Nelly Kaufer’s website:  https://pinestreetsangha.org/

What is Reflective Meditation? Nelly begins an answer by saying, “A big difference is that we really mean it when we say you're free to do whatever happens when you meditate; which means let your thoughts in, let your emotions in. if something just feels really awful that's going on internally, you're free to get up, you're free to take a walk; you really have freedom to let it go where it goes. And also to contain it as you need, which is really, as is becoming more known, trauma-informed.” - Nelly Kaufer

11 Jul 2024Miles Sherts | Insight, Intuition + Victimhood of the Ego01:10:16

In this conversation, Miles Sherts and I discuss the relationship between insight meditation and intuition. We explore the distinction between insight meditation's focus on impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and emptiness, and the idea of intuition and clairvoyance. Miles emphasizes the importance of being present and aware of the prompts and intuitions that arise in daily life. We also delve into the illusion of ego and the role of awareness in transcending the ego's influence. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the problem of victim psychology and the need to question and transcend the identity of victimhood.

Takeaways:

  • Insight meditation cultivates awareness and insight into the nature of reality, while intuition and clairvoyance are more personal and psychological insights.

  • Being present and aware allows us to receive intuitive prompts and act on them, leading to a more functional and worry-free life.

  • The ego is an illusion that creates the image of a separate self, and its constant maintenance drains our energy and prevents us from experiencing true happiness and effectiveness.

  • The ego's identity as a victim is a common pattern that perpetuates conflicts and oppression. Recognizing and questioning this victim mentality is essential for personal growth and societal change.

  • Setting personal boundaries and protecting oneself is important, but it is crucial to differentiate between setting boundaries and perpetuating a victim identity. Victimization is a substitute for our real power and keeps us trapped in a cycle of disempowerment.

  • Leadership without victimhood is essential for creating positive change.

  • Unplugging from the ego allows us to tap into our innate power and feel a sense of empowerment.

  • Practicing unhooking from thoughts and finding spaciousness within the mind can lead to a deeper understanding of our true nature.

21 Feb 2024The Challenge of Pausing | Dharma Talk + Meditation Prompt00:54:01

On the phone recently, a friend shared a comment from their therapist: “Until you stay in the same place for three years, you’re never going to address and heal your shtuff.” The therapist didn’t say “shtuff,” but the comment is relevant to anyone interested in the fruits of contemplative practice.

But, as a sangha member emailed to me, the challenge of staying in place – physically or metaphorically – is that all too often when we try to pause, we get overwhelmed by the various floods of worry, anxiety, fear or worse. What to do?

In this talk, I speak to ways in which dharma practice attunes us more vividly to this challenge, and how it offers a way through this formidable challenge.

18 Oct 2023Rodney Smith | The Heart's Completion01:26:54

In this special episode, I am honored to be joined by my first – and most significant – dharma teacher, Rodney Smith. Rodney spent several years as a Buddhist monk in Burma and Thailand, working notably with Ajahn Buddhadasa, Krishnamurti and Nisargattada Maharaj. He disrobed as a monk in 1983 and, after returning to the West, started working in hospice care and teaching vipassana meditation throughout the U.S.

For over thirty years, Rodney was a guiding teacher at the Insight Meditation Society as well as founding teacher of the Seattle Insight Meditation Society.

Over the many years of sitting retreats with Rodney at IMS, I found him to be one of the most challenging, provocative and passionate teachers I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting. In our wide-ranging conversation we explore dharma practice and the heart’s completion right now.

08 Oct 2023Cultivating the Spirit of Wisdom | Dharma Talk00:51:04

In this episode, I talk with the Swiss yoga teacher Elisa Malinverni about her wonderful new book, Yoga for Recovering Addicts, Stories of Hope and Ways of Self-Healing. Elisa’s clear and nuanced writing explores an integral path to recovery for all manner of addiction.

“In my book, we’re all addicts. The only difference is, some of us have addictions that society labels as strengths and advantages, such as workaholism, fitness-addiction or orthorexia. Some of us weren’t as lucky and ended up with a coping mechanism that society demonizes. The stigma only causes more pain that begs to be alleviated.” – Elisa Malinverni (Yoga for Recovering Addicts)

In this episode, I speak with Insight Meditation teacher and communication coach, Miles Sherts, about his approach to “conscious communication.” This is one of the most elegant approaches to generative communication that I have found.

We discuss how many people, and especially couples, get into arguments about “what happened” or about “truth.” Putting the “truth trap” aside, Miles explains why he suggests people focus on their feelings and needs, and I share just how difficult that pivot in conversation can be.

We also explore the problem with morality and why Miles advocates a shift from morality to integrity.

Miles and I are planning a series of episodes that will explore a variety of interrelated themes, spanning from Insight Meditation, to Conscious Communication, to the problem of egoic identity, the culture wars and existential collapse. I’m looking forward to sharing this series with you and encourage you to pick up either of Miles’ very helpful books on Conscious Communication.

23 Jul 2024Joseph Goldstein | Roots and Flowers On the Path01:28:06

In this special episode, I speak with Joseph Goldstein, meditation teacher and co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society. We reminisce about our relationships with Michael Brooks and Jack Engler, two very influential individuals in the dharma world. Joseph shares his experiences working with Michael as a mentor and discusses the integration of spirituality and activism in Michael's life. Joseph also discusses his time with Jack Engler and how Joseph guided Jack through the stages of insight on the very first three-month retreat in North America in Bucksport, Maine. The conversation then shifts to Joseph's experiences in India and Burma, where he studied with his renowned teachers Munindra-ji, Dipa Ma, Mahasi Sayadaw and Sayadaw U Pandita. We compare experiences we had while working with U Pandita and the importance of deepening one's practice in a single method before integrating other practices. We also explore the concept of One Dharma and how to navigate the multitude of Dharma streams available in the West. Our conversation concludes with Joseph’s advice for aspiring meditation teachers.

14 Nov 2023Chasing Phantoms | Dharma Talk00:36:12

In this talk, recorded on November 13, 2023, I share a small collection of personal vignettes in which my senses deceive me, creating emotional convictions that are ultimately inaccurate. I raise the question: What do these experiences suggest about the nature of self, the nature of truth and the nature of conviction?

22 Feb 2024Amiel Handelsman | Meeting the Meta-Crisis01:34:04

Until I spoke with Amiel Handelsman, I had mistakenly thought that the term “meta-crisis” referred to the overarching sense that the world is in a massive crisis of overlapping calamities, all threatening our survival. But after speaking with Amiel, I realized that I was thinking of the poly-crisis. Amiel explained to me that the meta-crisis refers to an underlying crisis of all the crises on fire. The meta-crisis is a crisis of consciousness or being – a root crisis in terms of how individuals and collectives will rise to meet the challenges that besiege the world today.

I was heartened to welcome Amiel Handelsman back on Everyday Sublime to share his thoughts on how personal development, and systems of personal development, like the Enneagram, can help frame a generative response to the metacrisis. In short, we need to grow up, clean up and wake up to deeper capacities of our being to deal with the multi-horrific poly-crisis.

Amiel has a professional background in leadership, management and executive coaching along with a strong foundation in the Integral Theory of Ken Wilber among other frameworks.

Amiel is also launching his own excellent podcast: How My View Grew, which looks at the origin stories of big ideas about humanity's challenges.

I highly recommend subscribing to Amiel’s show. I always learn a LOT from my talks with him.

Here is Amiel’s description of his show, How My View Grew:

“If you’re weary of political polarization, nothing is more refreshing than nuanced thinking: ideas that reveal the complexity of what’s wrong in the world and how to make it better. But where does such thinking come from? Often, it’s from someone changing their mind—letting go of an old perspective and growing into a new one. Join executive coach Amiel Handelsman as he interviews nuanced thinkers about the origin stories of their big ideas. Each story offers a window into one of humanity’s greatest challenges like climate change, democracy, the culture wars, the wealth gap, Ukraine, and Israel. In weeks between interviews, Amiel offers tips for training your mind to navigate complex topics and difficult conversations.”

31 Oct 2023Nancy Van Dyken | Everyday Narcissism01:25:15

In this episode, I am joined by psychotherapist and author Nancy Van Dyken whose book, Everyday Narcissism – Yours, Mine, and Ours, sheds some fascinating light on this ubiquitous condition of the psyche. EN, or everyday narcissism, isn’t clinical Narcissistic Personality Disorder. It’s a fragile psychology that is conditioned by the way so many of us were raised by family and by culture.

If you’re interested in more stable relationships, better boundaries and how to heal shame, I highly recommend Everyday Narcissism.

26 Mar 2023The Tiger and the Snake Revisited | Dharma Story00:45:56

10 Jul 2017What Is Yin Yoga? (Episode 1)00:12:09
Yin Yoga is an approach to yoga that is meant to be a complementary style of practice to more active styles of postural yoga. The intentions of Yin Yoga are to stimulate, strengthen, and revive tissues of the body that are not emphasized to the same degree as in active styles of yoga, hence its complementary nature.
11 Jul 2017Yin Yoga: Playing The Edge (Episode 2)00:18:12
In Yin Yoga, and increasingly in other styles too, there is an emphasis placed on understanding how your body is uniquely influenced by the pose and then from that, making wiser choices about how to align yourself within the pose. How you feel and adapt to what you're feeling are important elements of Playing Your Edge in Yin Yoga poses.
26 Jun 2017Everyday Sublime: The Podcast (Episode 0)00:10:28
This podcast is intended to be a reflection on and for practice. For many years, I've signed off my monthly newsletter with the phrase, "From my practice to yours." What this attempts to convey is that first and foremost, I'm a practitioner - a Yin yogi, an acupuncturist, a meditator. As a practitioner, I'm committed to a process of learning, refining, unlearning, integrating, and developing. I hope that these reflections on my practice help you with yours.
12 Jul 2017Yin Yoga: Relaxing The Muscles (Episode 3)00:10:45
The second aspect of executing a Yin Yoga posture is to relax the muscles in the area that you are targeting. Confusion tends to arise when students hear this instruction to "relax the muscles." There is a tendency to take this as a global mandate that in Yin Yoga poses ALL muscles everywhere MUST relax, but this is going too far. In practice, you endeavor to relax the muscles primarily in the targeted area that you are influencing. It's this action of relaxing the muscles that shifts the emphasis of the posture's stress into the denser connective tissues in and around the muscles and the joints.
17 Jul 2017Yin Yoga: Staying Still For Time (Episode 4)00:10:53
The third principle of Yin Yoga is to stay still for relatively longer periods of time than you would in an active style of yoga practice, such as Ashtanga or Vinyasa Yoga. The question of how long you should hold the posture often surfaces. By now, you may be anticipating my answer. How long you should stay in a posture depends on a few factors: namely, the tolerance level and strength of the tissue being stressed, and the broader intention behind that stress.
19 Jul 2017Yin Yoga: How to Come Out of a Pose (Episode 5)00:10:28
When it is time to come out of a Yin Posture, you may feel a pronounced disinclination to move quickly. Remember: the tissues in the area that you have targeted will be temporarily weakened as a result of the stresses placed upon them during the hold. As such, these targeted areas tend to feel delicate, fragile, vulnerable, and tender. So, because of these kinds of sensations, it's a good idea to encourage students to also come out of the pose slowly. Or, as I like to cue, "Come out gingerly."
24 Jul 2017Yin Yoga: The Universal Donor of Yoga (Episode 6)00:09:14
All too frequently, someone says to me: "I love how Yin Yoga makes me feel... BUT, I couldn't just do Yin Yoga." Based on their expression as they say this, I can only assume they think they've caught me in some kind of gotcha moment, where they're exposing a blind spot in my understanding of YinYoga. And much to their surprise, I respond, "Of course, you wouldn't ONLY practice Yin Yoga. I would never suggest that."
26 Jul 2017Yin Yoga: Bitter Practice, Sweet Result (Episode 7)00:10:18
I often get the sense that when students come to a Yin Yoga class they want to feel good throughout the class, start to finish, particularly when it's a class that seems on the surface to be "gentle" and "quiet" and "meditative". And yet, that is not the average newcomer's experience. At some point during the second or third pose of the sequence, newcomers often evince a grimace of distaste and concern. And this needs to be acknowledged.
31 Jul 2017What is Meditation? (Episode 8)00:11:41
Simply put, meditation is mental training, and a way to know yourself better. Meditation develops certain qualities of your mind. For thousands of years, this mental training was practiced within spiritual and religious communities, often requiring a fair amount of faith, belief, and superstition on behalf of the student. But now, there is a renaissance underway, ushering in new ways of practicing and thinking about meditation.
02 Aug 2017Yin vs. Yang Meditation (Episode 9)00:14:05
When we look at different mental qualities, Yin qualities of mind tend to include traits like receptivity, allowance, yielding, tolerance, quiescence, reflection, passivity, or non-manipulation. Yang qualities of mind tend to involve traits like doing, manipulating, directing, improving, achieving, controlling, or becoming. From a Chinese perspective, both Yin and Yang qualities are essential. And the value in better understanding the relationship between Yin and Yang qualities is to promote balance and harmony between them.
07 Aug 2017Yin Meditation: Relaxing the Mind (Episode 10)00:11:04
In a Yin approach to meditation, the main emphasis is to develop a relaxed and receptive attitude towards the experiences you have while meditating - you're not trying to control or overly manage those experiences; you're developing gentleness and tolerance to yourself and the variety of experiences you have while meditating.
09 Aug 2017Yin Meditation: Playing Your Mental Edge (Episode 11)00:11:31
The general "mental posture" within a Yin approach to meditation is for your mind to be receptive and open to the full range of your inner experience. But with such an open-ended approach, it's not uncommon for challenging emotions and themes to arise within your practice. I suggest handling these strong mental/emotional energies in the same manner that you might negotiate strong sensation in the body during a Yin Yoga posture.
14 Aug 2017Yin Meditation: The Art of Releasing Conflict in Meditation (Episode 12)00:14:45
When your mind is given permission to be receptive to the total spectrum of experience and to relax within that process -- and to not try and push unpleasant things away -- one of the things that relaxes is the resistance to conflict. I'm sure you've heard the old aphorism: "That which you resist, persists?" Well, it's true in meditation, too. If you resist conflict, it tends to just push back and kick its heels in deeper. But if you are receptive and allowing of it, the conflict tends to shift and move, change and flow; it comes and goes more fluidly.
21 Aug 2017Yin Meditation: Staying Still in Meditation (Episode 13)00:12:23
By committing to a fixed time, you will inevitably go through phases of calm, agitation, boredom, restlessness; periods of wondering when it will end, and possibly periods of time of not wanting it to end. And in sitting through all these experiences -- riding these internal waves -- you will start to get to know your inner world better.
28 Aug 2017Yin Meditation: Exploring Stillness (Episode 14)00:11:04
The peace in the heart of these still states provides a balm to stress and anxiety. There is a profound relief and well-being that often accompanies these states. And frequently, when you experience them, there is a blooming of faith that something significant and important is developing in your meditation practice. And one of the truly wonderful aspects of a Yin approach to meditation is that internal stillness happens rather frequently on its own.
11 Sep 2017Yin Meditation: Absorption Au Naturel (Episode 15)00:12:33
In this Yin approach to meditation that I'm describing, when you dial back any effort to try and control your mind, you're giving your mind space to explore things that it finds naturally engaging. For example, while relaxing and being receptive to your experience in meditation, you might find that you start to think about about a dynamic at work, or an unfinished project at home, or a disagreement with someone, or a holiday you'd like to take. In allowing your mind to get absorbed into these kinds of themes and topics, certain qualities of focus and calm - often listed in meditation texts - do start to come together.
18 Sep 2017Yin Meditation: Relaxing Within the Hindrances (Episode 16)00:16:28
In contrast to more active and Yang ways of working with the hindrances, I've found it incredibly fruitful to adopt a more Yin approach. Rather than deploying any prescribed technique or strategy for dealing with them, I've found that bringing a relaxed, receptive, tolerant, and curious energy towards the hindrances is a really good first step. These qualities reframe the energy that my mind tends to have in approaching each hindrance. I'm not so much in attack mode any longer. I'm a bit softer and friendlier, encouraging a broader exploration of their energy.
25 Sep 2017Yin Meditation: How To Fail At Meditation (Episode 17)00:14:29
What I'm about to suggest as a way of working with sleepiness will likely cause you to question my sanity. But, for me, and many that I've spoken to and worked with, allowing sleepiness to be, i.e. letting it go on, is the most effective strategy for working with it. And, in the context of this lesson, by doing so, you might find yourself inadvertently entering deep states of stillness by specifically not fighting sleepiness.
02 Oct 2017Yin Meditation: A Creative And Functional Approach To Meditation (Episode 18)00:16:34
In a Yin approach to meditation, you encounter the raw materials of your life: sensations of the body, perceptions, ideas, thoughts, views, and opinions. And in coming to know these elements more directly, you can shape and make of them what you will. How you act, think, speak, work, and rest are all of one process that you examine and develop in the workshop of your meditation practice. You are both the artist and the creative subject.
09 Oct 2017The Jazz Session: Ode to Aaron Goldberg (Episode 19)00:16:58
I find Aaron's trios are the settings where his personality and voice shine brightest. In my interview Aaron, he talked about the depth of connection that forms between jazz musicians when they've played together for years and years and years, and it's that level of connection and interpersonal knowing that facilitates the kind of expression and improvisation that is so charged and captivating. It's that depth of familiarity which facilitates the sublime.
