Today is the FINAL DAY of our phrasal verbs challenge. We’ve covered a lot this week, but there are still many more phrasal verbs to learn!

You can do that inside my Phrasal Verbs in Conversation Course. The lessons in that course teach phrasal verbs through dialogues, so you can easily see how native English speakers use them when speaking.

Let’s get started with our challenge questions! Try to figure out the meaning of the phrasal verb from the sentence, and after a few seconds, I’ll show you the right answer.

This brings us to the end of our phrasal verbs challenge! I hope you’ve enjoyed it and learned a lot. We covered 50 phrasal verbs in 5 days, so make sure you also go back and review the lessons to help you remember them better.

Your learning doesn’t have to stop here – you can keep going and learn 500 more phrasal verbs by joining my Phrasal Verbs in Conversation Course. Make sure to check that out if you want to master these phrasal verbs that we use so frequently.

Thanks again for joining me for the phrasal verbs challenge – we’ll move on to other topics next week – so I’ll say goodbye for now and I’ll talk to you in the next video.

09 Dec 2020Tips for pronouncing WORLD, WORD, WORK00:05:07

Today I'm going to give you some tips for pronouncing "world" - a lot of students find this very difficult.

We'll also practice work and word, since these are two more that English learners have a hard time pronouncing clearly and correctly.

Remember, you CAN master these difficult words with practice!

If you want to be fluent in English, your pronunciation doesn't have to be "perfect" (there's really no such thing as perfect pronunciation) - but it does need to be CLEAR so that other people can understand you.

I can help you get that nice, clear, confident pronunciation in my Pronunciation & Shadowing Courses. The lessons inside will help you practice and improve fast.

11 Jan 2015010 - 60 Common English Collocations with DO and MAKE00:14:54

These two words can be confusing, but I’ll teach you the difference – and teach you 60 common collocations with example sentences to help you!

  • Use DO for actions, obligations, and repetitive tasks.
  • Use MAKE for creating or producing something, and for actions you choose to do.
  • DO generally refers to the action itself, and MAKE usually implies that there is a result/product. For example, if you “make breakfast,” the result is an omelet! If you “make a suggestion,” you have created a recommendation.

05 Jun 2019217 - How to use the words invaluable, infamous, inflammable00:05:24

Today I'm going to teach you three pairs of confusing words that have the prefix IN-. In many words, IN- means the opposite or "not":

23 Dec 2019246 - Holiday or vacation?00:04:48

It's just a couple days away from Christmas, which is a major holiday in the United States. So in today's lesson I'm going to teach you about the difference between the words holiday and vacation.

English learners often ask me about this, and it's a little tricky!

Now put it into practice!

What’s your favorite holiday? Describe it in English.

What did you do on your last vacation? Write about it in English.

One common expression you’ll often hear in December is “Happy Holidays!” - wishing someone a nice season of celebration, regardless of whether they celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or another special time.

So, happy holidays to you! Make sure to follow Espresso English on YouTubeFacebook, and Twitter so that you don't miss any lessons in the new year.

31 Jan 2018152 - How to pronounce ALLOW, LOW, and other words ending in -OW00:04:26

Today we’re going to practice pronunciation of words ending in -ow.

Make sure to check out my Pronunciation and Shadowing Courses for a lot more pronunciation training, including an evaluation of your English pronunciation.

I noticed a mistake that some of my students are making with this word: ALLOW. They are saying it like “alloe,” but it’s actually pronounced “allow.”

It’s funny, the words low (the opposite of high) and below (which means “under”) have the same “o” sound in “no” – low, below. But the word allow has the ow sound as in the words now and how.

14 Oct 202020 different ways to say NO in English00:06:50

Last week you learned 20 different ways to say "yes" in English, and today you’ll learn 20 different expressions for "no."

These are especially important to learn because we often want to be polite when declining an invitation or request – it sounds a little rude to just say "no."

Or maybe you want to add some additional information to the simple answer of "no" – a lot of today’s expressions include extra meaning.

This is just a very small sample of the many ways we have to say "no" in English – there are many, many more!

As you can see, these different expressions all add slightly different meanings. A lot of them are commonly used in some situations, but don’t sound natural if used in another situation.

This is why it’s so important to learn words and phrases in context, so that you can use them the right way.

The lessons inside the Everyday English Speaking Courses are based on dialogues that help you learn phrases in the real situations where we use them.

It's our most popular and practical course at Espresso English  :-)

09 Mar 2022English words with DISAPPEARING syllables!00:03:51

The pronunciation of many English words sounds different from the way they appear to be written. Some English words have "disappearing or dropped syllables" - reductions or eliminations of sounds in the middle of the word.

One example is the word favorite - we don't pronounce it FAV-o-rit with three syllables. Instead, we say it more like FAV-rit - the "o" syllable disappears.

In today's lesson, you're going to practice pronouncing some of the most common English words that tend to have dropped syllables.

If you're having difficulty with pronunciation, the key is to practice repeatedly and consistently!

You can get that practice inside my Pronunciation & Shadowing Courses. There are lots of exercises for you to listen and repeat, and at the end you get a pronunciation evaluation.

When you buy both these courses together, you get a discount, so you can get a lot of pronunciation training for a great price :-)

13 Apr 202220 vocabulary words for LIGHTS00:05:28

Today let's expand your vocabulary by learning 20 different words for lights - from lamps to lighthouses to lightning (which you shouldn't get confused with lighting).

As you learn each word, repeat it after me to practice your pronunciation.

Do you ever have trouble remembering the English vocabulary words you learn?

It's very common. In fact, lots of students write to me asking what to do about this problem. I have several tips, but one important thing to think about is how you originally learn the word.

Is it from a word list, textbook, or dictionary? Well, that's a good start... but your memory will be even more powerful if there's an image - a picture - associated with the new word.

That's how we learn vocabulary as children. We don't yet know how to read, but we learn to associate new words with the objects we see.

That's why there are lots of pictures and illustrations in my Vocabulary Builder Courses!

Each level of the course will teach you more than 1,000 useful words in a simple, efficient way.

04 Nov 202016 super-confusing words in English00:11:26

Do you ever use the wrong word in English?

It's a very common problem - and it affects students at all levels, from beginner to intermediate to advanced.

These mistakes are especially common when the two words appear very similar - like "interfere" and "intervene" or "relation" and "relationship" - or when they seem to have the same meaning, like "problem" and "trouble" or "staff" and "employees."

Today I'm going to teach you the differences between all these super-confusing words I just mentioned, as well as a few more.

I hope this lesson has helped clarify these super-confusing words! If you have any words that confuse you, let me know and I'll add them to my list for a future lesson.

But you might find many of your questions answered inside my 600+ Confusing Words E-Book. You can see exactly what's covered in that e-book when you click on this list of all 600 words you'll learn.

22 Sep 202111 word pairs with CONFUSING pronunciation00:05:21

Let's practice pronunciation together!

We'll work on pairs of words with confusing pronunciation - in which the same combinations of letters are pronounced differently.

One very frustrating thing about the English language is that the pronunciation is irregular. There aren’t strict pronunciation rules that you could memorize and always know exactly how words are pronounced – it’s just not possible.

There ARE some pronunciation patterns… but there are also exceptions to those patterns! Some letters and combinations of letters have multiple different pronunciations, and you can’t know which one to use just by reading the word; you need to hear the word. That’s why listening and repeating is so important.

You can improve your pronunciation fast inside my American English Pronunciation Course – we’ll learn and practice all the sounds of the language, helping you to make the differences between similar sounds and avoid pronunciation mistakes.

This course will help you speak English more clearly, confidently, and correctly!

09 Oct 2019235 - English phrases explained: Good grief & For goodness' sake00:05:32

When you're studying English, I recommend focusing on learning phrases and not just individual words. When you only study individual words, it's hard to put them together into a phrase - but when you study phrases, then it's much easier for you to use the whole phrase when speaking.

The problem is that sometimes you might hear or see a phrase that doesn't seem to make sense. This often happens with idioms and informal expressions.

My students ask me about phrases all the time, and today I’ll explain two expressions – "good grief" and "for goodness' sake."

If you’re interested in learning more phrases that native English speakers use in daily life - and especially learning these phrases inside the context of conversations - come check out my Everyday English Speaking Courses.

05 Sep 2022Don't focus on words or grammar rules (do this instead...)00:04:02

Over the next four days, I'm going to share with you my best tips for improving your English speaking. Let's get started!

Here's one reason it can be hard to speak English.

You might know a good number of English words... but then it's difficult to put them together into sentences when you speak.

First of all, it's a LOT of work to put together an entire sentence word by word. It takes a lot of time, and it makes your speaking slow.

Second, a lot of questions come into your mind:

  • Am I using the right words?
  • Is the grammar in this phrase correct?
  • What if I make a mistake? Will the other person laugh at me or not understand what I'm trying to say?

These doubts and worries can STOP you from speaking, or make you nervous to try!

So my first tip that will help you speak English fluently and confidently is NOT to focus on memorizing words or grammar rules.

Instead, focus on learning phrases.

26 Mar 2018163 - Learn 10 expressions with the word KNOW00:04:52

"Know" is one of the most common verbs in English, and I know that you know what it means! But what you might not know is that we use this word in many idiomatic expressions, such as:

  • for all I know
  • know the drill
  • not know what hit you
  • you don't know the half of it

You can learn these expressions with "know" in today's lesson!

19 Jan 2022"Right" and "wrong" expressions00:07:44

You know that "right" and "wrong" are the same as "correct" and "incorrect" respectively. These words are also used in a lot of informal expressions and idioms in English - let's learn 10 of them!

One of the hardest things about learning English is not being sure if what you're saying and writing is right or wrong...

And one of the great things about many Espresso English courses is that they include opportunities for feedback and correction from our teaching team!

Feedback on short answers:

  • Vocabulary Builder Courses
  • Phrasal Verbs Course
  • Idioms Course
  • Advanced Vocabulary & Collocations Course

Feedback on paragraph writing:

  • Reading Course
  • Advanced Grammar Course

Feedback on recorded speaking:

  • Everyday English Speaking Courses
  • Pronunciation Course & Shadowing Course (end-of-course evaluation)

This way you can put your English into practice and find out what you're doing well, and what needs improvement.
