25 Mar 2023 | Keep asking questions | 00:49:54
Today we are joined by Immy, (a student of EquiScholars) and Claire, Thrive Practitioner and Immy's mentor from the Conquest Centre. 15 year old Immy is one of the original Equischolars and tell us about how she got into horses, how she learnt and then dealt with relearning! As an avid rider, a knowledge in equine behaviour has changed the way in which she looks at common behaviours and now asks what is happening, rather than an interpretation of the situation. Claire give us some great insight into the importance of connecting with our learners (both horse and human) and how this is the first step in being able to do vital equine therapy work. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting and feeling all the positive vibes for our future stewards of the horse!
07 May 2022 | Grief in The Herd | 00:55:30
In this podcast we discuss grief in the herd. Please be aware that we talk about different methods of euthanasia, the ethics of training for euthanasia and our observations of the herds that we live and work with that have witnessed a loss of a herd member. Some listeners may struggle with some content, so please listen in a safe space and when you are ready. We are hoping that this podcast is helpful in some way to our listeners. Preparation is great and important if we have the opportunity but sometimes things happen quickly and/or out of our control, this podcast may offer some help, assistance and guidance with tips on how to support the remaining herd members, remember wherever there is attachment there is loss, this will include you too, so take things easy and be kind to yourself and your animal family. Every individual owns their own thoughts and feelings, healing doesn't happen in a straight line and will be different for everyone, supporting each other and the animals that we interact with can help us and them heal. If you have a professional individual that you trust to help be with you when the time has come and is in an area that we haven't mentioned, please post in the comments, this could be a great help to someone else.

29 Jun 2022 | No such thing as a useless Horse | 00:49:21
Becky's back!! We recap the last few weeks & Kate updates us about her Cat Sage and his antics. We also talk about the recent training weekend and how well everyone did. Then we chat about the un-ridden and/or retired horse. As an Animal Physio and body-worker, Becky works with horses from all different training backgrounds and finds it hard that horses can be seen as "useless" when they aren't fulfilling the need of the human. We should as caregivers (owners) be looking at our horses in a different way, providing a life after "our fun/turn" because no horse is useless and there is so much we can learn from the horse as a horse. Wouldn't it be great if we had a life plan for the horses in our care? We know we have to be realistic, not everyone can afford to keep every horse and sometimes tough decisions have to be made. But let's start talking about this topic, exploring and evolving our thoughts and ideas and keeping horses welfare in the forefront. Kate sets a challenge for Becky, this will be recorded for our Patreons along with all our great training content and so much more!! If you are enjoying our podcast, thank you so much for listening, we would love for you to like, subscribe and share. 08 Feb 2021 | What’s in a Trick! | 00:48:01
Trick training is fun for you and your horse. It engages the equine brain & there are so many tricks to choose from. But what is a trick? To us it maybe teaching the Smile, Bow, Lying down or Fetch! But to the horse everything they learn from us could be seen as a trick. Because trick training in general is fun, it’s a good idea to inject this fun learning together in all the training. In this podcast we discuss our fave tricks and what really is a trick anyway? Follow Kate and Becky on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube: Equilogical Positive Equine Partners and Little Green Stables

20 Jun 2021 | Arousal in our horses | 00:45:04
SEAM stands for: spontaneous erection and masturbation and it’s the topic of today’s podcast. Are horses that are trained using positive reinforcement more likely to SEAM? Is it because of frustration, relaxation, anxiety, contentment or boredom? We love it when questions lead to more questions...The fabulous Maisie Wake shared some research (see the link below) an we are interested in this as Rum does “drop” during training quite a lot, but what does it really mean? Do Mares get aroused with the training and what are the signs....? More questions? As usual we add some silliness and immaturity but it is an interesting topic and more studies are being done and looking for input, so get in touch with them if you and your horse would like to be involved: https://horseport.com/magazine/behaviour/rising-occasion-why-gelding-dropping/amp/? 27 Jan 2023 | Curious Bob | 01:04:07
This week Kate & Becky talk to Ella Bartlett from Bristol University about her recent study into horse training. Ella is currently studying for a PhD at the University of Bristol, where the aim of her project is to better understand how horse owners decide which approach to take when training their horses.
The hope is that this knowledge will mean we’re in a better position to promote the wider use of evidence-based training methods in the future. You may have seen the study on social media, the study has now closed & Ella is collecting data with a fantastic response from all around the world. Ella discusses some of the findings & gives us a few teasers (the full data is still being collected). 28 May 2022 | Are “helpers” helpful? | 00:49:25
This episode went rogue. Apologies for those of you that listened to it at the end of our Grief episode - that wasn't the plan. However feedback tells us that it helped cheer some of you up after listening to the very important but rather sombre episode where we discussed grief in the herd. In this episode we answer a question from one of our valued Patreons and Podcast listeners, all about are helpers - helpful? How having help can be challenging and how it can undermine our training at times but also offer value, help and that important third eye. We chat about our default behaviours as trainers and recognise that we are always the learner too. We try not to be to hard on ourselves when those default behaviours come in and to remember that we can reset, rethink, breathe and move on. It's important to be honest about the times when we struggle, the times when we need some outside help and the times when we don't. We also discuss the importance of testing your training and that this should become the norm but again it's easy not to and to "just know" your learner knows the behaviour and you have trained it perfectly - remember the learner is always right!! Going back and re-checking the basics is vitally important, the saying if you don't use it you lose it is a there for a reason.

15 Jul 2022 | The Oak episode | 00:46:15
Wow we have reached our 80th episode!!
Thank you SO much to all our fabulous listeners and followers, we really appreciate you and hope that we have brought some laughs but also some helpful information for you and your Equines.
In this episode Kate has a grumpy rant. We do try to always be upbeat, positive and bubbly but sometimes changing the world can be hard.
Kate feels she is on a never ending upwards struggle but Becky helps to remind her that we all face similar difficulties and are all trying to do our best with whatever situation we are in.
The Equine world is steeped in tradition and Kate is a trail blazer, it's only natural and sadly inevitable that she will face some troughs, but lets try and focus on the peaks. We have you as listeners and questions about management, environment, nutrition, behaviour and training methods in the Equine community are being asked. Change takes time and some people are more ready than others. Thank you for being part of that change.

09 Feb 2023 | Pain assessment in horses using artificial intelligence with Gabriel Lencioni | 01:00:54
If you haven't heard us talk about Gabriel before then where have you been? :-) He's a vet, IAABC certified (CHBC) and all round awesome person! Gabriel was part of an undergraduate research study in to create an AI system that can be used by vets to recognise if pain in present in the horse; Pain assessment in horses using automatic facial expression recognition through deep learning-based modeling. You can find the study at https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0258672 Gabriel tells us how they gathered information from stallions pre and post castration to build up the comparison profile for the system with brilliant results. There are many signs that horses show when in pain and this study looked at only facial expressions in order to be able to work on an AI system. We also talk about Gabriel's interest in equine behaviour as a vet and how the disconnect between neurology and physiology seems pretty crazy to some of us, his plans for his PhD, his new baby (horse that is :-)), horses in Brazil and much more! 30 Jul 2022 | A circle back to enrichment! | 01:04:11
This week we circle back to one of our very earliest of podcasts on enrichment to look at how effective enrichment is for the stabled horse, what aspects of enrichment seem to be the most effective and how we can apply these findings to our management of horses.
In this episode we are joined by the brilliant Louise Napthine from Why Do Horses? Louise shares a study on housing horses in individual boxes and the challenges towards welfare. The study can be found at https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/9/9/621#:~:text=This%20housing%20system%20is%20reported,%2C%20and%20stress%2Drelated%20behaviours
She discusses some of her thoughts on the study and the effects of enrichment on stereotypies and we all discuss how powerless we can feel when our horses are put on box rest, luckily Louise has a solution to help owners feel like they have some influence over the situation.
Louise is a massive fan of enrichment and she writes articles on the subject as well as running her Happy Horses Workshop where she visits yards and creates bespoke enrichment plans for people and their horses - to find out more visit her website www.whydohorses.com

25 Feb 2023 | Best laid Plans | 01:16:57
In today's podcast we are joined by the ever wonderful Trudi Demspey, Equine Behaviour and Training Consultant. We had decided to talk about planning, which we do at points throughout but there were a few tangents that we just had to discuss, staying motivated in our training, considering emotions during training, what to do if you are finding it difficult to get into your training sessions and so on.
An open and honest conversation with lots of laughter. Enjoy!

04 Apr 2021 | Protected Contact: we can all use it | 00:44:17
In this weeks episode we discuss Protected Contact and how useful it is for all of us. Often we think of protected contact as needed for horses that are considered unsafe, dangerous, untouched or with a severe abuse history and yes, protected contact can help in these situations. But we also look at other ways protected contact can be used and how successful it can be with every day training. We are joined by Becky’s rescue Parrots for this episode so you may hear them in the background. *Warning* this podcast features some sexual references. Kate and Becky discuss their simulator training day with the fabulous Heather Moffett. A discussion taking place in the car on the way home from the simulator day. It was a super day with some of our fabulous Patreons. Heather was so giving with her time and patient with us all. 16 Dec 2022 | Decide to dismount - The discussion | 01:10:18
A different take on todays podcast! After publishing the "decide to dismount" short video on her fb page, Becky received a huge amount of comments both positive and negative. We decided that it was important to answer some of the many questions that arose and address some of the more negative comments. It can be so easy to comment on people's videos but are we being helpful? Are there better ways to express our feelings online?
Trudi clarifies the fundamentals of the training; Did we use reinforcers? Is it actually negative reinforcement on the mat? How was the mat trained? Is the rate or reinforcement too low?
A lot of commenters believe that, if given the choice, their horse would choose not to do the work. The three of us talk about this a little more in depth, is that actually the case? Was it the case for Reg? Is there a compromise when we have to exercise our horses for weight management?
Lots and lots of great discussion, you don't want to miss out on this one! If you are enjoying our podcast please share, like 👍🏻 and subscribe. You can find Kate, Becky and Trudi on social media. For our training content and so much more, join us on Patreon/littlegreenstables

05 Mar 2022 | Interview with Dr Tamsin Furtado | 01:05:43
In today’s podcast we talk to Dr Tamzin Furtado, Post Doctorate Research at Liverpool University.
Tamzin has conducted a variety of research studies throughout her career including Managing Equine Obesity, Equine wellbeing on livery yards and her most recent paper on the use of alternative grazing systems in the UK.
We discuss:
What is the best way to manage obesity in our equines?
How we have become conditioned to seeing overweight horses and dogs as the norm.
We delve into the reality of being a livery yard manager and what a difficult job this can be. Becky shares a story about a livery yard and has her perspective changed after listening to Tamzin.
We also touch on human behaviour change, is there a bright future and how a multi-disciplined approach is needed to affect this change.
We look to the future and chat about sustainability and horse care and how in an ever changing climate we need to seek out new ways of manging our land.
As always there’s an interruption from an animal, a few tangents and Tamzin also “out – analogies” Becky (for our regular listeners you’ll know this is rare!!)
We could have chatted to Tamzin for hours about all the incredible work she has done and her findings but parent duties put a stop to that. We are very much looking forward to having Tamzin with us again to discuss her future projects.

06 Nov 2021 | The Power of the Pause | 00:52:36
In today’s podcast we discuss the power of giving a pause. It’s something both Kate and Becky have been introducing to our training with the horses. Becky uses the pause in a slightly different way when training Squawk her rescue African Grey as he is bonded to her husband and when the daylight changes this can offer hormone challenges. The passive pause is used with the horses at the beginning of the training session and in between each separate behaviour being trained (unless you are chaining ). The passive pause has been so valuable for creating calmness in the training and some valuable processing time for both human learner and horse learner. We have introduced it successfully with Rum, and Kate has been introducing the passive pause successfully with the Conquest Horses, videos of this training can be found on our Patreon members page: Little Green Stables. We recorded this podcast before our interview with the fantastic Trudi Dempsey, and decided to publish after our podcast with Trudi went out, so please bare in mind the time lag. We hope you are enjoying our podcast and if you are, please share, like and subscribe. We would love to meet you in our members club over on Patreon: Little Green Stables.

09 Apr 2022 | Have a real conversation - Part 1 | 01:01:16
In today's podcast we are joined by the brilliant Dr Emily Kieson Director of Research at the MiMer Centre and the equally brilliant Jessie Sams from Animal Behaviour and Trauma Recovery Service and behaviour consultant and research assistant at the MiMer Centre. Kate had the pleasure of hosting Emily and Jessie at Conquest where they explored human - equine interactions in more detail. In this episode we discuss the importance of creating trusting relationships outside of the learning quadrant. Positive reinforcement is an effective tool for training and although we can sometimes believe that we are giving our horses choice, that choice is of our construct. How can we interact with our equines without an agenda, how can we start a conversation based on our horse's way of talking? As always we didn't have enough time but we will be recording more with this fab duo! If you are enjoying our podcast, please feel free to download, like and share. All our behind the scenes training videos can be found when you join us over on: https://www.patreon.com/LittleGreenStables On Patreon we cover: Training, Anatomy, Forage, Behaviour, Multi Species training and more!!!

Shawna and Jessie tell us about a really exciting project they have coming up with a big hotel (don't worry we'll be chatting to them again soon to find out how this went) and the many many other things they are doing to get out there and start really important conversations in a world where +R is either not commonly known or is misunderstood. 26 Mar 2022 | Headcollars, foals and zonkeydonkeys?! | 00:42:13
In this podcast we discuss haltering. Why might an equine find a headcollar aversive? Are some types of halter better than others? How can we train our friends to accept the headcollar in a calm and relaxed manner?
We also briefly touch on a study of halter training foals in New Zealand and some interesting results that came out of it.
As usual a few tangents including an animal fight outside Kate's window that gets her a little distracted! If you are enjoying our podcast please share, like and subscribe. 27 Jun 2021 | Hide and Seek/Recall: Search & Rescue | 00:47:00
Equine Search and Rescue is a thing.... Kate has been inspired by this training as we have been playing Hide & Seek with Rum. Because the horse can access fast and different terrain, follow a scent and the ability to detect movement far away it makes them perfect for the job. Yet again we are in awe of how amazing horses are. So what does that mean for us? Well Hide and Seek is a great recall game, it’s similar to A2B but with a different slant as the horse has to find the human. We have been playing this game with Rum, hiding in different places and in different areas and we will progress with this. Why bother to play Hide and Seek? Why not? Its great fun and you really engage the seeking system in the horse, recall is always an advantage and if you ever needed your horse to find you..... viola the training is already there. 10 Nov 2023 | Talking Agility with Horses: Part 1 | 01:11:02
Welcome back! It's been a while :) In this episode Becky chats to the fabulous Sarah Johnson one of Little Green Stables valued Patreons about horse agility. Sarah lives in Switzerland with Kenda her horse who is of a similar age to Becky's Rum. Becky has just started training agility with Rum and all this training and more can be found over on the Patreon site. Sarah and Becky discuss the obstacles, how beneficial they can be for both humans and horses and how agility training can really suit R+ and clicker trainers. This is just Part 1 and Sarah and Becky wanted it to be an informal chat from lay trainers about how they find adding in Agility for their equines. For Part 2 Becky and Sarah are joined by Kate Blackmore from Equilogical and Equischolars and Trudi Dempsey: Equine Trainer and Behaviour Consultant to help break down the obstacles, chain them, train them, adding stimulus and all the details that we know we need them for. Hope you enjoy and please don't forget to share, like and subscribe.
