13 Jun 2022Chapter 8: Dead London feat. CHUNKS (Richard Brown, David Callaghan, Gabriel Featherstone)01:00:18

Chapter 8! Dead London!

Or should it be, dead? London? Or maybe dead! London. As you'll see, there's a bit of death, but is it the metaphorically beating heart of Victorian Englands beloved capital, or is it the as of yet un-identified hearts of the Martian invasion? There's only one way to find out!*

Basically, there's a lot happening narratively, so what better excuse to have a lot happening on the guest list hey?

We're joined, by not one! Not four! but three guests from the Glasgow comedy collective CHUNKS, a wild night of experimental comedy exhibited in 3 minute bits.

27 Jan 2023Intermission: Victorian Germs! Feat. Kristin Hussey00:39:01

They live in the soil, they live in the air, they'll more or less live anywhere, it's germs!

As we've heard in the last chapter, those invisible assailants have done us a big kindness in the War of the Worlds, but are they always friendly tiny buds helping us out? If 2020 - now have shown us anything, no!

Intentions of the forces of nature aside, in a special none chapter episode, Edy sits down to speak with Historian, Curator and Author Kristen Hussey about the history of germ theory, and what H.G. Wells' would have known whilst writing the novel.

Kristen is author of 'Imperial Bodies in London:Empire, Mobility, and the Making of British Medicine, 1880–1914' a Whitfield prize winning book focussing on the science and political climate at the time of these discoveries, so the perfect guest for an expert insight.

03 Feb 2023Chapter 9: Wreckage00:27:55

After a long journey, we're here, the pen-ultimate chapter of the War of the Worlds, Wreckage.

With the Martians gone the way of the Dodo, what wreckage do they leave behind? And what will our narrator find on his journey home?

Plus we have a song that became more and more like a Johnny Cash tribute the more i wrote it, but with the mental breakdown on the record, as we think about what would be like to be the last man left alive.

02 Jun 2023Chapter 10: Epilogue (feat. Jonathan Ferguson from Royal Armories)00:46:59

Martians? Forget about them! Renunions with family? You better believe it. So obviously all that's left is to go into great detail on the aftermath of an invasion that changed the world, or at least the 70 mile square radius between London and Woking,

With the final chapter, Epilogue, we reach the finale of the novel, and what better way to commemorate than a trip to the site that inspired the story that launched a thousand (ish) remakes?

Plus there's a song about Germs, about time someone said something about them, and we sit down with Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms from the Royal Armories.

This Chapter is a jam packed with conversations, and what better chance to invite some personal comedy friends onto the pod? There is none. NONE.

We invite Pottervision (Lukas Kirkby and Tom Lawrinson), Tom Little to the show and the wonderful return of Bexie Archer for some of the many characters our narrators talks to.

What do you recon you could do in 15 days? Bring all your mates from Mars, take over the earth and accidentally plant some red weeds?

The narrator is leaving the house where he's hunkered down, and checks out the local wildlife. Will he successfully eat a dog? Will the dogs successfully eat him? I doubt it, there's another 4 chapters.

Plus, a deep dive on some of scifi finest deep dives.

28 Jul 2021Chapter 1: Underfoot feat. Tom Burgess00:39:47

We're back! Book 2, Earth under Martians.

Earth (by which in the book we mean the 75 mile radius of London) is well and truly knackered under the Martians. Hampton Court? Barely any visitors. Big Ben? Forget it. London Eye? Not created yet, but if it was, it'd also be knackered.

We return to find the narrator still knocking around with that fair weakness of a man, the Curate, and what better way to celebrate that than with our beloved fair weakness, Tom Burgess?

He's returned as the Curate and also has read through the chapter with us adding asides.

We've also got a short little song for all recovering emos out there, and a deep dive on the many shapes and forms the curate or a religious figure has taken in some of the numerous adaptations.

13 Jul 2020Interlude 2: What even is a chance of Mars? feat. Ross Brierley00:29:57

One of the most quotable lines from H.G. Wells The War of the Worlds must be Ogilvy the astronomers famous assertion that:

The Chances of Anything Coming from Mars, are a million to one.

But is it actually a million to one? How likely is that, really?

This episode Edy takes a look at the scientific attempts of putting a number on extraterrestrial life, and talks to Not So Late Show Host Ross Brierley about whether it's worth placing a bet on, and if it's worth being more concerned about the chances of asteroids, sharks or going for a run.

26 Oct 2020Chapter 13: How I fell in with the Curate feat. Tom Burgess and Black Liver (Keith Carter & Ruth Cockburn)00:45:47

When the going gets tough, what do you do? Strip off to the waist and steal a boat in boiling water? If you're the narrator, yes!

Also, we finally see the introduction of the Curate. To listeners of the musical, they may know the character as the Parson played by Phil Lynott. But what the heck is a curate? Where do they fit into the hierarchy of the Anglican Church? Well don't worry, I sit down with Tom Burgess to discuss this as he takes on the famous role.

08 Jun 2020Chapter 1: The Eve of The War00:24:35

Chapter One of Edy Hurst's Comedy Version of the War of the Worlds, an audio-scrap-book into the seminal scifi novel The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells.

In this, our inaugural episode, Edy Hurst ('bursts with comedic joy' The Skinny) reads chapter one, introducing us to our narrator, Ogilvy astronomer, and his hobbies of riding a bike and writing philosophical essays on human morality, in that order.

There's also deep dives into the indigenous people of Tasmania following a flippant comment by Wells, a song about Lemurs and Monkeys, and a quite frankly brooding score.

04 Jan 2021Chapter 16: The Exodus From London feat. Bennet Kavanagh and Jen Ives00:56:28

As the Martians are going, quite frankly, feral, across the South West of England towards London, we continue with the account of the Narrator's Brother (still no name) and his escape from London.

We also take a look at revolvers and the UK gun laws, how come so many folks in the book have 'em willy AND nilly?

Joining us this week is the fantastic Bennet Kavanagh and Jen Ives.

Bennet recently won the Audience Choice award at the Amused Moose New Comedy Award, and has created an ace song inspired by the chapter. He's also voicing the Narrator's Brother for this week.

Jen Ives is a Leicester Mercury Nominated Comedian and is performed Mrs and Ms. Elphinstone.

Chapter Two of Edy Hurst's Podcast Version of The War of the Worlds, an audio-scrap-book into the seminal scifi novel The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells.

In the second episode, we hear more about the falling stars spotting in the sky above Woking, and follow Ogilvy (Voiced by Hannah Platt) as they discover the crash site on Horsell Common. We also meet London journalist Henderson (voiced by Josh Jones) and do a deep dive into the world of news reporting in Victorian times and now.

30 Nov 2020Chapter 15: What Happened in Surrey feat. The Loremen and Amelia Baylor00:44:42

We're back in Surrey after a brief trip to London, but for how long? Not only have the Martians unleashed the heat-ray upon the county, but now they've got a strange new retaliation to earth's firepower. If I didn't know any better, I'd say this was personal.

As well as the chapter, we've got a fantastic guest song from Amelia Bayler, and a talk about all the sounds from monsters past with the Loremen themselves!

16 Nov 2020Chapter 14: In London feat. Frank Foucault00:59:34

London, home of Big Ben, the underground and now the ever growing threat of a Martian invasion.

As refugees from Woking and Surrey arrive, we join the narrator's brother to see his side of the story, and another of H.G. Wells' what's in the papers chapters.

We also take a look at British exceptionalism - what is it? Why is it here? Has it ever led us into terrible decisions that still are unresolved today?

This chapter I'm joined by the hugely talented Frank Foucault, a brilliant comedian and musician who has just released an album only available on facemask. He joins us for a quiz on true or false Victorian headlines, and also provides an absolute jam about wanting to read a book.

07 Sep 2020Chapter 10: In the Storm00:35:32

If you've ever heard/read/seen the War of the Worlds before, you'll know that far and away the tripods are the most memorable part. AND THEY'RE HERE!

One leg is bad, two legs good, three legs? Perfect!

As the Martians ascend out of their pit will the narrator return the rented dog cart back? Will he bump into a bizarrely large amount of people in a war zone?

We've also got a run down on some of history's greatest tripods this episode and this weeks song is all about how great three legs are. Basically, it's a big of tripod celebration, what more could you want?

09 Nov 2021UPDATE ON CHAPTER 7 - 1000:02:57

22 Jun 2020Chapter 3: On Horsell Common00:21:08

Chapter Three of Edy Hurst's Podcast Version of The War of the Worlds, an audio-scrap-book into the seminal scifi novel The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells.

In this episode, news of the crash landed Martians has reached the hustle and bustle of Woking, Chobham and Chertsey with a gathering crowd of people including some gailey dress women!

Whilst the common people frequent the Horsell Common, we take a look at what attractions follow in the wake of Extra Terrestrial sightings across the world, including a whole exhibiton dedicated to crop circles - oh boy!

Also a little ditty about the many folks of Horsell Common.

25 Aug 2021Chapter 3: The Days of Imprisonment00:34:21
In what must be the least relatable part of the book for our entire generation, we find the Narrator and the Curate still stuck unable to leave the house. A sort of lockdown I guess, only it's Martians, and I don't want to cast judgement, but I've not seen a single mask or hand sanitiser in sight.

It's an Edy only episode! We've got a song about peepholes - of course! We've got a deep dive on colonialism and its impact on land - yes please!

Once again, a big thank you to Jason Cooke of the Manchester institution Comedy Balloon for providing the excellent backing music for during the narration - the night returns at the Ape and Apple on the 25th August so why not go say hi? 08 Sep 2021Intermission: Break a Plate00:07:19

We're taking an intermission from the story main this episode, but fear not! Banish fear, like an exorcised ghost or a used tissue, into the bin of courage. For whilst we don't have a chapter, we've got two very special songs.

The first is an ode to carrots, as keen eyed listeners may have seen on Edy's Twitter, Instagram or Facebook

11 Aug 2021Chapter 2: What We saw from the Ruined House feat. Rex Factor00:53:46
Well, they're still stuck in the worst house share either of them have experienced, but don't worry, at least they've got a peephole to steal a glance out of. And what do they see? Well there's only one way to find out (excluding reading the book and all the other adaptations). This week we're joined by Graham and Ali from the British History podcast Rex Factor, a show that looks at every monarch and ranks them. What better guest to help advise on whether Queen Victoria or King Edward would handle a Martian invasion better? Plus we have a song about hiding in the Darkness of the Scullery, something we can all relate to. A big thank you to Jason Cooke of the Manchester institution Comedy Balloon for providing the excellent backing music for during the narration - the night returns at the Ape and Apple on the 25th August so why not go say hi? 18 Jan 2021Chapter 17: The Thunder Child feat. Jen Ives01:00:54

The Final of Book One is nigh! And let's go out of the half way point with a half way bang.

Chapter 17 of The War of the Worlds sees us with the Narrator's Brother and the Ephinstone's at the end of the Country, in a desperate escape from an England invaded by Martians.

We've got the ironclad Thunderchild, with it's sophisticated strategy of ramming 7 shades of shit out of the Martian Tripods. But is it enough to deter the army of Mars from taking down the would be refugees?

Also joining us for a chat about gender in scifi is the fantastic Jen Ives. Jen is a stand up comedian and host of the podcast Peak Trans. She joins us to talk about the weirdness of deciding that it's exclusively men from Mars and that women are boats. We also have a game of Trans terrestrial icons, where we look at some of scifi's top (and not) trans icons.

21 Sep 2020Interlude 3: Justice for Wells feat. Simon Guerrier00:36:48

Was Wells a bad lad? Did he believe in the horrors of colonialism and eugenics? Is he guilty by association?

Regular listeners will remember that in Chapter 1 we took a deep dive into Victorian Racism, a subject that Wells rubbed shoulders with some of the worst proponents of scientific racism.

BUT as it turns, the answer is a fairly solid no, as it turns out, Wells was often outspoken for socially progressive, going so far as to write public letters calling for the abolition of segregation in America, and creating the blue prints for Universal Human Rights.

For this interlude from our telling of the War of the Worlds, I'm joined by writer and producer Simon Guerrier!

Simon has produced a number of documentaries on the life and times of H.G. Wells including the fabulous BBC Radio 3 documentary, HG and the H Bomb which was used as research for the deep dive in Chapter 6!

You can listen to both of them at the links on them - fancy that!

In this chat we talk about H.G. Wells and his response to eugenics, his love life, and his pursuit to always discover new and challenging ideas. We also have a little chat about Doctor Who and the role Wells played in shaping that.

As well as a producer, Simon is best known for his writing work for Doctor Who audio dramas with Big Finish

27 Jul 2020Chapter 6: The Heat-Ray on Chobham Road00:22:45

The power of the Heat-Ray continues to wreak havoc on the South England Municpality of Woking, Chobham and Chertsey in Chapter 6.

We also take a look at the world of Science Fiction future prediction, and there's George Clinton inspired funk song that the Heat Ray has always deserved.

29 Sep 2021Chapter 5: The Stillness feat.The Delightful Sausage (Chris Cantrill & Amy Gledhill)00:29:05

With the curate gone, and only the narrator home, what's the first thing he does? Drink dirty drain water and think about eating a dog? When the cat's away!

This chapter we're joined by Edinburgh Comedy Award Nominated and telly bothering double act The Delightful Sausage. Amy Gledhill & Chris Cantrill are a hilarious grotty duo that you might have seen on Harry Hill's Club Nite on C4, Late Night Mash on Dave, or Alma's Not Normal on the BBC. They're all over the stations! And with a special on BBC Radio 2! Leave some of the senses for the rest of us.

They are also a powerhouse of a live act(s) individually and together, as well as purveyors of the brilliant podcast Tiredness Kills. Amy also has a lovely podcast that is called, a lovely time, you can't write a coincidence like that.

Go see their live shows this October, more info here.

28 Sep 2020Chapter 11: At the Window feat. Tony Wright00:30:04

What would you do if you saw a random army man in your garden? Invite them in for a candlelit dinner and a whisky?

This chapter we see the introduction of the Artillery Man, a character that pops up in some form in nearly every adaptation of the War of the Worlds.

Whether it's David Essex in the Musical Version or Tim Robbins kinda-creepy-conspiracy-theory-guy in the Spielberg version, he's the Martian  war survivor with a heart of gold.

Naturally, I invited personal comedy friend Tony Wright on to play the role. We also talk about growing up near(ish) the Horsell Common, and Diggerland, the UK's premier heavy machinery based theme park.

You can follow Tony on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, and be sure to check out his hilarious sketches with Somali and Me on Youtube

03 Aug 2020Chapter 7: How I got Home feat. Bexie Archer00:28:36

After the destruction of your close friends by some interplanetary mirror jerks, who wouldn't seek comfort at home? In this week's chapter our narrator heads back to his wife, but not before slagging off some locals.

Also, we take a look at what it meant to have PTSD in Victorian times (it didn't exist then) and a quick chat with the wonderful Bexie Archer!

Bexie plays the role of 'the wife' bringing all her experience as a RADA trained actor, a member of the BBC Writersroom 2019/2020, Chortle Student Comedy Award winner, and one half of Your Dad's Mum

20 Jul 2020Chapter 5: The Heat Ray Feat. Hannah Platt & Josh Jones00:26:42

Back to the book, and we find Horsell Common under attack from the Martians advanced weaponry.  As we see a welcome party made up of Ogilvy, Henderson and Stent, we sit down with Hannah and Josh to see how they would make first contact with visitors from out of space.

06 Jul 2020Interlude 1: Jeff Wayne's Podcast Version of the Robot Knee00:17:54

Over the century and a bit since it was published, the War of the Worlds has been adapted into countless formats, from graphic novels to radio shows, but one of the most beloved must be Jeff Wayne's 1978 Musical Version.

Taking a short break from the book proper, this week we take a deep dive into the life of Jeff, as well as hear a song Edy wrote about a robot knee.

29 Jun 2020Chapter 4: The Cylinder Opens Feat. Alasdair Beckett-King00:28:44

Finally! The mysterious cylinder crash landed on Horsell Common Opens, and at last we catch a glimpse of those pesky Martians that'll cause such a ruckus. With the first description of the Martians, I wonder with Alasdair Beckett-King what previous descriptions of aliens might be found in folklore of yore. There's also a banger of a tune about being stuck in a pit, not that anyone knows what it feels like to be stuck in a specific place for an unspecified amount of time right now!

Teaser Trailer for Edy Hurst's Podcast Version of the War of the Worlds, an audio(scrap)book of H.G. Well's Seminal Scifi Novel, the War of the Worlds. 15 Sep 2021Chapter 4: The Death of the Curate feat. Tom Burgess00:29:00

In what's been the biggest spoiler of a chapter title, and there's been a good few so far (I'm looking at you, destruction of Weybridge & Shepperton), we finally say good bye to our favourite frenemy, the Curate.

We've laughed, we've cried, and now it's time to die. But how will it happen? At the hands of the narrator?

Plus we've got a Greek-myth inspired deep dive, and the musical send off our favourite fair weakness deserves.

Thanks to Tom Burgess for all his work as the Curate. You can listen to Tom's Podcast, Into the Archives with Peter Fleming, at the link, and follow Tom on Twitter.

30 Oct 2020HALLOWEEN SPECIAL: The Red Room00:35:16

In this halloween special we read The Red Room, a short ghost Story by H.G. Wells.

What apparition haunts the redroom of an old manor house? Is it the Duke, or is wife who was killed by a bad case of the spooks? Or maybe, the real ghost is the friends we've made along the way?

13 Oct 2021Intermission: Victorian Science Problem Panic Time feat. Subhadra Das00:32:27

If there's one thing from Victorian Science that's aged about as well as a puddle of milk in a rain coat pocket, it's the theory of eugenics. We've talked a bit at the very start of the book about how much these ideas have been involved in H.G. Wells' writing, but to do it a little more justice, the fabulous Subhadra Das zoomed in to chat a little more about the history of these ideas, and how they still permeate through thinking and science (especially science fiction) today.

Subhadra is a broadcaster, writer, historian and curator, focussing on how ideas of race, colonialism and capitalism have affected museums and culture. Basically, the best person for us to chat with about our Martian invasion/ colonialist panic novel.

If you want to find out even more about eugenics, Subhadra's podcast Living with Eugenics has been a massively helpful and enlightening, as well as her series What Does Eugenics Mean to Us?

11 Apr 2022Chapter 7: The Man on Putney Hill Feat. Jack Lewis Evans01:21:25

We're back! The Martians have gone no where! But whose this lurking around Putney Hill? Is it an old friend who we shared a meal with and gave us expert advice on looking for biscuits? I won't insult your ignorance with such leading questions.

Alongside the ropiest cockernee accent this side of Dick Van Dyke, we're joined by the polymath comedian, producer and podcast Jack Evans to finally put to rest the age old question "is a sewer with a Nintendo Switch better than an Orwellian Dystopia?"

10 Aug 2020Chapter 8: Friday Night00:19:58

You know how it is, it's Friday night, a bunch of Martians have killed your friends and all you want to do is find out what's shakin' at the railway station.

At least that's where we find our narrator in this weeks episode of Edy Hurst's Podcast Version of the War of the Worlds. Plus, we take a look at Germany's status as a growing military power in later 1800s Europe, what makin' love meant in the day, and also a song about Men from Mars.
