24 Feb 2020 | 125: Empathy Week with Ed Kirwan | 00:27:49
The world needs more Empathy– but teaching it is not enough Empathy Week 2020 is an invitation for 200,000 young people to put empathy into action and create a better world. Together, we are building the #EmpathyGeneration. Ed Kirwan is an educator, filmmaker and photographer who works to challenge the status quo of social issues and lead people into tangible action. He studied Biochemistry at the University of Bath and worked as a research scientist for a year before he moved into secondary education where he taught science in North London. In the 2 years since, Ed finished a Masters degree in 'Leadership' from UCL:IOE before going on to highlight the issue of homelessness in the UK., educating the general public on ways they can help through powerful visual storytelling. Ed now runs a community that brings homelessness organisations together in the UK, acting as a key networker for the sector and between grassroots organisations and larger national charities. In addition to his work around homelessness, during the past two years, Ed has volunteered and worked in Uganda and India on international development projects and also documented the Homeless World Cup in Mexico in 2018 and Cardiff in 2019. It is ultimately his experiences in the classroom, at the Homeless World Cup and working alongside Slum Soccer in India that led Ed to create Empathy Week 2020. A free secondary school resource, it invites young people to put empathy into action and create a better world by empowering them to make change in their own communities. Ed believes teaching empathy alone is not enough and that students need to be given the freedom, time and space to develop the leadership and empathic skills that are so vital in everyone's career and life. As a dedicated basketball player, he also recognises the importance of sport in character development and has therefore focused on the theme of 'Sporting Change' for this year's Empathy Week. Ed now continues to work on Empathy Week, enabling its impact to spread across the UK as well as continuing to grow his own production company Both Buckets, which has a long term goal of showing that businesses can exist earning a profit whilst 'doing good' at the same time - fulfilling a life of filling both buckets. 27 Feb 2023 | 332: What is self-efficacy and why should we be paying attention to it in Primary Schools? | 00:39:47
RS Assessment conducted a study among 21,000 key stage 2 pupils in English schools recently. The study was funded by the Nuffield Foundation and aims to better understand the longer-term impacts of the Covid lockdowns on this cohort of kids’ attainment, wellbeing and attitudes to learning. What is self-efficacy and why should we be paying attention to it in Primary Schools? We talk a lot about self-esteem in our children, but what is the connection between self-efficacy and their achievements? Our research shows that the majority of Key Stage 2 pupils report feeling some vulnerability in self-efficacy, with large (greater than 7 Percentage Point, or 14%) drops since the pandemic. Professor Clare Wood and Katie Blainey, Director of Assessment at Hodder Education talk about the role of self-efficacy in improving pupil outcomes and how we can we restore our children’s sense of their ability to achieve – both in the classroom and at home. 27 Jan 2025 | Understanding Left-Handedness in Education: A Conversation with Mark Stewart | 00:45:54
How do we support left-handed children in a predominantly right-handed world? Mark Stewart, founder of Left n Write Ltd, shares his journey and insights on the unique challenges faced by left-handed individuals, particularly in educational settings. With over 1 million left-handed children in schools across England, Mark emphasizes the lack of awareness and training for educators on how to assist these students effectively. Mark started his small business about 30 years ago as a result of trying to find left-handed scissors for his youngest son when he was 4. Mark's wife Heather had no training in helping left-handed children during her Teacher Training so they started to campaign with their left-handed MP, Peter Luff, to change the Education system to be proactive rather than passive. They had meetings with Ministers, questions and a 30 minute adjournment debate in the House of Commons, produced a training video in 1999 (now downloadable/interactive and was updated last year) as well as writing an information/activity book titled "So You Think They're Left Handed?" and 3 books titled "Left Hand Writing Skills". We have also produced other resources specifically for left-handed children in education. Over the years I have run over 200 training workshops. In 2021 Mark co founded and is co-chair of a global group called "LEFT-IN" Left-Handers Education Forum and Training International Network (left-in.org) with the aim to improve the information and education available to the educators of left-handed children around the world. The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on children’s education may be perceived as a justification for narrowing the curriculum at the expense of the arts and the humanities, but this conference will explore the case for preserving young children’s entitlement to as rich and diverse a curriculum as possible. Alex Hatvany is the co-founder of Atom Learning, the UK's largest edtech platform for KS2 children. Using AI, Atom creates gamified exercises tailored to each child's level and learning style and offers 90,000 teacher-written questions. 23 Jan 2023 | 322: Kinesthetic learning in pre-K to 2nd grade with Walkabouts | 00:45:59
Walkabouts are on-demand adventures that transform math, language arts, and reading content into short, movement-rich activities for pre-K to 2nd grade students. Teachers report that Walkabouts help build students’ confidence, improve self-awareness, and enhance self-control. This evidence-based online curriculum supplement makes it easy for teachers and parents to create kinesthetic learning activities — fun lessons that bring key concepts to life through active learning techniques. Walkabouts are even correlated to the state standards (plus Head Start and NAEYC standards) teachers already use. Plus, unlike traditional videos or brain breaks, Walkabouts are dynamic and different each time they play. Watch as a Walkabout is created and played. As a kinesthetic learner, Dr. Julian Reed - Walkabouts co-founder - remembers his active classes in school most fondly. He based Walkabouts on scientific research that proves kids who move more perform better academically. He hopes to kick start a new generation of children who stay active and learn at the same time. 11 May 2020 | 140: The Yoghurt & Juice Network | 00:25:57
Health and nutrition education for teachers and parents. Support your children to learn about their wellbeing in school or online. The Yoghurt & Juice Network was an idea born during a long car journey, where founders and Nutritionists, Yasmin and Jenna, were fed up of listening to the responsibility of the current state of children’s health being passed between parents, schools, industry, government and so on. As a result, they decided to take on some of the responsibility themselves, by creating The Yoghurt & Juice Network and providing credible nutrition education, first hand, to children, parents and teachers in schools and colleges. The network strives to achieve it’s aims through delivering classroom workshops, assemblies, whole school initiatives and teacher and parent talks through innovative and creative means. At The Yoghurt and Juice Network we strongly believe that healthy eating should always be enjoyable, delicious and never a chore. We believe in educating children to allow them to enjoy making healthier choices whilst understanding the benefits to their long term health. We strongly feel that children should be provided with the best chances possible and understanding the relationship between what they eat and their health outcomes is the perfect place to start. www.theyoghurtandjuicenetwork.com Instagram @theyoghurt&juice_network https://www.facebook.com/theyoghurtandjuicenetwork/ https://www.patreon.com/theyoghurtandjuicenetwork 'Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire' Show Sponsor The National Association for Primary Education speaks for young children and all who live and work with them. 21 Feb 2022 | 244: NEO the next generation platform with Graham Glass | 00:37:56
Cypher Learning NEO is the next-generation platform your school has been waiting for. It’s the ideal solution for all learning activities, whether it’s creating content, assessing students, or tracking student achievement. NEO provides a refreshingly new way to teach and learn that boosts student engagement and makes teaching easier. With an intuitive design and powerful features, NEO has all the tools schools and universities need for a great learning and teaching experience. It all started with a young boy named Graham Glass who had a tremendous passion for education. Growing up in the U.K., Graham was lucky to attend schools where he encountered some great teachers. He enjoyed going to school and learning new things. He even thought of choosing teaching as a career. Later on, after finishing university, Graham became a teacher and was a senior lecturer at the University of Texas, where he taught Computer Science. He gained a good reputation for his teaching skills at UTD, and was soon getting offers to teach the same materials at local high-tech companies. Back in those days, Learning Management Systems (LMS) did not exist to help facilitate teaching and engage young learners with their studies. Even then, he was wondering why isn’t there a way to package his instruction materials in a scalable way and make it available to millions of people. Graham built his first company based on his teaching experience and ventured on to corporate training and software products. He founded two more companies related to computer tech and training, but his passion has always remained teaching and education. Even though he spent most of his career in the enterprise software space, there has always been a significant educational component, whether it was teaching at University, writing books, teaching in corporations, or explaining complex topics at seminars. That's why in 2009 he decided to go back to his educational roots by starting a new company called EDU 2.0. The company focused on something that was very close to Graham's heart, which was improving education through an innovative e-learning platform. His mission was to provide a better way of facilitating teaching and learning and have a bigger impact on the way people learn. In 2014 EDU 2.0 rebranded to NEO and EDU 2.0 for Business rebranded to MATRIX. Both products are now under the umbrella of CYPHER LEARNING. In 2017, the company launched a new LMS product for entrepreneurs named INDIE. Over the years, CYPHER LEARNING products have received numerous awards and recognitions, are used by over 20,000 organizations, and are available in 40+ languages. Graham's passion for education and innovation has become the essence of who we are as a company and motivates us as a team to offer the best solutions for each market. CYPHER LEARNING is currently the only company that offers learning management systems in all major e-learning sectors: academic, corporate, and individuals. In this solo show Mark shares his thoughts and experience of what learning has really meant during lockdown. It seems amazing that governments are declaring children need to catchup with missed work. How can there be no allowance for the world shutting down? Why does life have to look the same as before? Surely if nothing else recent events have shown us all that life has to reflect what is happening to and for us? You wouldn't expect someone to run a race with a broken leg you would reframe the expectations and goals. Let's take this opportunity to do the same for education. Simon Antwis is Senior Education Consultant at STEER Education. He has been a headteacher of three schools and a school inspector. STEER Education is a whole-school mental health platform that empowers teachers to measure, track and improve the self regulation and mental wellbeing of young people. It supports being proactive in safeguarding young people’s mental health. STEER Education exists to prepare young people with the human skills they need to thrive in life. Research shows that self-regulation is a critical skill that young people need for that journey. STEER'S mission is to safeguard the mental health of the young people by teaching them to self-regulate. They do that by serving families, schools and young people themselves. STEER provides schools with a standardised, data-driven, impact-focused approach to measure, track, and improve social-emotional health across their schools, and demonstrate a high level of proactive safeguarding. Their tools track how every young person steers four factors of self-regulation: their self-disclosure, trust of themself, trust of others, and seeking change. STEER schools track their young people 3 times a year, year on year, from 8 to 18, providing early mental health risk flags, and personalised action plans to guide teachers’ response. We even provide practical guidance for children’s families. 13 Dec 2021 | 233: Safety 4 Life Foundation with Brian LaBovick | 00:38:00
Brian LaBovick is the CEO and Founder of LaBovick Law Group in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. What most excites Brian these days is ‘Safety 4 Life Foundation’ – his foundation focused on improving youth’s safety regarding the road, the internet, the police, and human trafficking. The Safety 4 Life Foundation creates impactful educational programs designed to change dangerous behavior on and off the road. Their inspirational experiences act as a guide for children and families to make positive choices that save lives. The Safety 4 Life Foundation was created in a year like no other, when the need for impactful safety programs has never been greater! Internet safety and human trafficking became critical subjects to address because our students were attached to their electronic devices prior to the pandemic, but remote learning took this to the next level. These circumstances made many susceptible to predators which can lead to a human trafficking situation. The unrest as a result of law enforcement related tragedies made creating peaceful interactions and offering solutions to the public and the police a priority. And the road safety crisis continues on for everyone who shares the road, especially our young and most vulnerable. Safety 4 Life provides assemblies, safety fairs, on-line information, and events for students and their families. Our dynamic speakers bring real life scenarios to the audience and eliminate any confusion associated with the dangerous subjects being presented. Opportunities for community service are available along with our Student Ambassador program which gives students an introduction into a civic mindset while keeping themselves and their peers safe. Towards a balanced and broadly-based curriculum was the theme of the National Association for Primary Education conference in March 2021. The keynote lecture was given by Dr. Tony Eaude. This is a follow up Q&A that I hosted and taken from a subsequent Facebook live event. NAPE has been a long term supporter of the Education on Fire podcast and I have been involved with the association for over 5 years, the last 18 months as vice chair. I thought this discussion was very insightful and wanted to give you the opportunity to hear it. The original full lecture can be found on the NAPE YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/YI_tiHvKxOk Tony suggested four main arguments for a balanced and broadly-based primary curriculum:
Questions & comments from conference delegates Retired Headteacher
As a student in my final year of an undergraduate course, I am currently working on an assignment about my own educational philosophy which very much aligns with Dr. Eaude’s Schiller speech. Embarking into my NQT year in September I know the best way to change this is starting in my own classroom. However big questions arise with that:

22 Feb 2021 | 189: We Are Next - Community Campaign with Mark White | 00:35:14
At the start of 2020, Your Town launched a community campaign called We Are Next, a national campaign to get the next generation moving and more connected with health, fitness and their community. We Are Next have reached over 1600 kids across 10 schools, in two different towns in Hertfordshire. The original idea was to visit a further 90 schools reaching over 4000 kids across the UK; the restrictions in place due to COVID-19 have resulted in We Are Next adapting their original plan. We Are Next and The Ocado Foundation have created a Key Stage 2 lesson plan, activities and tools, which are all available to download online for FREE. The aim is to help educate children about the importance of health, wellbeing and exercise and the role that community plays in all three. They delved into some stats around fitness, health and wellness and discovered that less than 25% of children aged 9-11 are active for 60 mins a day, that only 1 in 12 young people eat 5 portions of fruit/veg a day and that 1 in 10 young people sometimes feel lonely. Knowing that teachers and parents alike, face challenges every day educating and raising the next generation to be healthy, happy and valuable members of their local community. Providing these resources for free, to use in primary schools or at home, they hope will encourage children to think about where they are from, their local town and its importance. 2020 has been a difficult year and the significance of community has been emphasised, more so than ever. We Are Next and The Ocado Foundation are passionate about the next generation and creating opportunities for them. Despite adapting their strategy, their mission remains the same; to ensure children feel inspired and better connected to where they live and the communities they are from. The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on children’s education may be perceived as a justification for narrowing the curriculum at the expense of the arts and the humanities, but this conference will explore the case for preserving young children’s entitlement to as rich and diverse a curriculum as possible. 22 Jul 2024 | America in Therapy with Phyllis E. Leavitt, MA | 00:51:59
Phyllis Leavitt has worked extensively with abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics, their aftermath, and some of the most important elements for healing. Her focus today is on her latest book, America in Therapy: A New Approach to Hope and Healing for a Nation in Crisis. 'When I became a psychotherapist, I never imagined I would one day be entering a “political” arena. But the more I worked with widespread family dysfunction and its horrifying legacy of pain and violence, the more I realized that the greatest threat to our survival as a country and as a species is our declining mental health. I knew that what we have learned about healing family violence can and must be applied to healing America. I felt compelled to leave the confines of my office and speak to a broader audience. I wanted to share my message of urgency to get ourselves on a path of healing, and I wanted to share a message of Hope that we can restore ourselves to Safety, Peace, and Love by healing the wounds we have suffered and the wounds we have inflicted that keep a cycle of violence going. I wrote America in Therapy for all those hungry for this message.' 07 Mar 2022 | 246: Pupil Learning Experience and Wellbeing Review with Edurio | 01:01:51
Iona Jackson is Head of Research at Edurio, managing a team of survey experts and data analysts through projects relating to stakeholder feedback in schools. New Edurio research reveals half of children feel stressed and a quarter feel lonely. Edurio has published their latest research examining pupil wellbeing, support systems in school and how pupils feel about school. The study drew on responses from 45,000 children of which 15,000 were from primary.
A survey of 45,000 school-aged children conducted by Edurio reveals that less than half (47 per cent) of pupils reported that they had been feeling well in the period leading up to the survey. A similar number (46 per cent) often felt stressed. Added to this, a quarter (24 per cent) of pupils admitted feeling lonely. This is much higher than a previous study by the Office for National Statistics in 2018 which found 11 per cent of 10-15 year olds felt lonely. It suggests that the pandemic has had a significant impact on pupils. The research, which was conducted during the summer term, found that pupils in the latter stages of their schooling fared worst for overall wellness, sleep and overwork. A third (31 per cent) of pupils in their final year of GCSEs reported feeling well; four in 10 (41 per cent) slept badly; two-thirds (66 per cent) felt overworked and over half (63 per cent) of year 11 pupils felt stressed. The research found significant differences in wellbeing between girls and boys, with girls reporting lower wellbeing scores. More than half (55 per cent) of girls feel quite or very often stressed compared to just a third (36 per cent) of boys. Almost half (48 per cent) of girls feel frequently overworked compared to just over a third (38 per cent) of boys. Furthermore, less girls (43 per cent) felt well than boys (54 per cent) and less girls (40 per cent) slept well than boys (47 per cent). Interestingly, the research points to a correlation between pupil wellbeing and a school’s Ofsted rating. Pupils at schools judged ‘outstanding’ have consistently higher stress levels, problems sleeping and feel overworked:
Edurio found that 71 per cent of students feel safe in class. However, eight per cent reported feeling unsafe in class which means, in an average-sized class, two to three pupils feel unsafe. Furthermore, when there is an issue, less than half (41 per cent) feel they have an adult at school whom they can trust and talk to. Similarly, just over a third (37 per cent) feel that they would rarely or never have an adult at school that they can trust and talk to. So, who do pupils turn to when they feel sad or worried? Almost half (48 per cent) choose...

The discussion between Mark Taylor and Douglas Robbins tackles the essential question of what education should truly encompass in the 21st century.Douglas shares his conviction that traditional education systems often fail to address the emotional and psychological needs of students, leaving them ill-prepared for adulthood. He articulates a vision of education that fosters individualism and creativity, suggesting that schools should serve as environments where children can explore their identities and passions. Through personal anecdotes, Robbins illustrates how emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in one's ability to succeed in life, stressing that a well-rounded education must include lessons on handling emotions, relationships, and personal finances. 06 Nov 2023 | 368: More Than A Score with Alison Ali | 00:34:05
Children are More Than A Score More Than A Score is here to change the way children are assessed and schools are judged. Primary school children in England are let down by a system that cares more about measurement than education. It’s damaging, and they deserve better. We want pupils to enjoy an exciting learning experience and then move on to secondary school with a love of learning. We don’t want them spending months cramming for government tests. We believe schools should be judged on the overall quality of education they provide, not the results of a narrow set of standardised tests. Our campaign supports school leaders and teachers who want to stimulate young minds and expand their knowledge and creative problem-solving skills, rather than having to “teach to the test”. It’s time to fundamentally change the high-stakes, high-pressure assessment system in primary schools and make good mental health the basis for good learning. But the evidence against the current system is growing. Parents, teachers and heads are united in calling for change. In 2022, only 3% of heads wanted SATs to go ahead. 89% of parents say they would support an alternative. And 1 in 10 year 6 pupils didn’t sleep well in the run-up to the tests. SATs and other government tests don’t help learning and cause unnecessary stress and pressure. Let’s speak out for children. Alison Ali Director/Owner Can Can Campaigns Alison began her career in journalism, moving into international consumer publishing. Her experience runs from human rights and global finance reporting, to launching premium multilanguage magazines and digital platforms for household brand names. She has run her own successful creative agency Can Can Creative since 2006 and, in 2019, launched sister agency Can Can Campaigns to harness the collective’s exceptional skills for greater good. 01 Mar 2021 | 190: Junior Authors Program with Susie Harder | 00:48:26
Susie Harder, M.A., CCC-SLP is an experienced clinician who devotes much of her passion to working with children who stutter. She works in private practice and the school setting to help support children and provides workshops and consulting-based support to school districts across California. She recently created the Junior Authors Program (a revolutionary literacy-based platform). Susie has a history of designing and building successful programs. During her time in Fresno Unified School District (2011-2015), Susie designed and piloted a framework for 100 elementary schools, where specialty services successfully reduced student speech therapy time up to 5 years. Most recently (2020), when the Central California Creek Fire started and children from her hometown lost their homes, Susie started brainstorming how to best support these kids. When she couldn’t find enough resources, she simply decided to create it. Within a week, she had written a children’s book themed around what these kids had just experienced, found an editor, taken a course on children’s books, and started looking internationally to find the best illustrator. Her child- development skills guided her toward sharing this inspirational knowledge with kids. Thus, she created a unique platform to reinvent how children connect with literacy and books. Through the Junior Authors Program, children across the world vote to decide characters, setting, and story details of a book as it’s being created. Children get to see behind-the-scenes and connect with her through fun video posts and “Ask The Author Live” events, and are empowered by contributing to the content of the book from rough draft to published book on Amazon! The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on children’s education may be perceived as a justification for narrowing the curriculum at the expense of the arts and the humanities, but this conference will explore the case for preserving young children’s entitlement to as rich and diverse a curriculum as possible. Dr. Eaude’s keynote lecture will set the scene, highlighting some key issues and considering some lessons to be learnt from the period of lockdown. The subsequent presentations will focus on classroom practice, providing a spotlight on innovations which have been implemented in school and offering guidance for the future. 29 Jul 2024 | The Adventures of Jelly Bean | 00:51:59
Follow Jelly Bean on her exciting adventures as a fourth-grader facing challenges that resonate with children of her age. From navigating friendships and family dynamics to discovering the complexities of life, Jelly Bean’s journey is filled with valuable life lessons. Amy Meislin Pollack, a retired teacher, parent and grandparent, highlights how to raise happy children, how to talk to them about difficult topics and how to help them face challenges like bullying, low-self esteem, friendship, popularity, death, race, drugs, alcohol, feeling neglected and family issues. Ever since she was in fourth grade – back in 1960 – Amy was writing and telling stories about a character named Jelly Bean. She never stopped telling those stories, sharing them with her students over a teaching career that spanned 40+ years. She shared them with her three children when they were younger – and then with her seven grandchildren. Now her stories have been made available to everyone with the recent publishing of two coming-of-age books intended for middle-graders, The Adventures of Jelly Bean and The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean. The Adventures of Jelly Bean and The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean are the stories of a fourth-grader who faces challenges that just about all children her age can recognize. Her parents don’t approve of her favorite friend in the whole world. She has trouble getting along with the brother who is closest in age to her. The uncle she loves so much is about to marry the most awful woman she could ever imagine, and the girl who used to be her best friend has turned on her. Jelly Bean faces these and other stumbling blocks, including: the difficulties in achieving and maintaining popularity and how important having certain friends should be to her; difficulties inherent in relationships with various friends and family members; and learning how to make decisions on her own. In these first two books of my middle-grade series, Jelly Bean comes to understand that much of life is trial and error, and that the only constant in life is that it is always changing.
