Episode #69: EdTech Solutions and Hybrid Learning Updates

Welcome back to GotTechED the podcast this is episode 69 called “Listener Mail and Hybrid Learning Updates”. In this episode, we’ll provide an update on our remote and hybrid learning experiences as the 2020 school year gets under way. Following that we’ll dive into our mail bag as we read and answer some of the best questions we’ve received over the recent months. This is another episode you don’t want to miss. Check it out.

Segment 1: Remote/Hybrid Learning Update

Segment 2: Mailbag

  1. We’ve been in hybrid learning for 4 weeks and it already seems stale… What can I do to make the classroom interactive and interesting?
  2. I am super frustrated with teaching on zoom when my students have Chromebooks. There are a lot of functions such as annotation, choosing their own breakouts, etc that they can’t use. Do you have any suggestions?
  3. Digital assessments are now my biggest headache. What do you guys recommend?
  4. Now that we are 5 weeks into school and I am feeling better about my teaching situation, what are some edtech tools that you use in your classroom? https://www.nj.gov/education/covid19/teacherresources/virtualproflearning.shtml
  5. What is a good way to digitally “hand out” materials to my students? There are so many options in my LMS, but sometimes I just want to provide a resource that they can edit and save.
  6. I see that you are posting a lot of videos on YouTube about edtech, what projects are you working on now?
  7. From Twitter edumentor chat: What are some ways that students demonstrate mastery after completing a hyperdoc.
  8. Thanks for doing a PD on podcasting! I never knew how many cool resources there are… What are some other podcasts that I should check out?

What is Blended Learning?

  • There are many different ways to define blended learning. The most referenced definition comes from the Christensen Institute:
  • The definition of blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns:

  1. at least in part through online learning, with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace;
  2. at least in part in a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home;
  3. and the modalities along each student’s learning path within a course or subject are connected to provide an integrated learning experience.

What is the PAACC Framework?

  • Personalization: Providing unique learning pathways for individual students
  • Agency: giving learners opportunities to participate in decisions about their learning
  • Authenticity: giving learners the opportunity to create for a real audience both locally and globally
  • Connectivity: giving learners opportunities to experience learning in collaboration with their peers and experts, locally and globally
  • Creativity: giving learners opportunities to make things that matter while building skills for their future

Welcome to the EdTech Throwdown.  This is episode 175 called “The British School Replacing Teachers with AI - Can It Work”  In this episode, we’ll share the story of the british school that is experimenting with a “teacherless” classroom led by AI!  We’ll also talk about why human teachers don’t have to worry as we discuss the best ways that AI can integrate with humans, not get replaced by it.  This is another episode you don’t want to miss.  Check it out.

Segment 1: AI Taking Over Teacher Jobs?

Narrative:  We heard lots of gloom and doom about AI in schools, but this is likely overblown.

There IS however, a school that is experimentally trying to replace teachers with AI.

https://www.inavateonthenet.net/news/article/uk-school-to-replace-teachers-with-ai-programme

The David Game College in London will replace its traditional teaching programme with an AI-enabled ‘adaptive learning’ system, opening a ‘teacherless’ course for 20 students in September.

The students will use a mix of artificial intelligence platforms on their PCs, in conjunction with VR headsets. Dubbed the Sabrewing programme, each student will receive a personalised learning experience with a self-paced approach that is ideal for examination resit students.

More on the  Sabrewing programme …

One important message for teachers - this WILL NOT BE THE NEW NORM

Stay tuned for segment 2 where we’ll talk about the ways AI will continue to incorporate with live human teachers, not replace them.

Segment 2: Mobile Apps for Teachers and Students

Cell Phones in school: yes or no?

Pro phone:

  • Send reminders to students via text with tools like Remind
  • Students used to use school-provided agenda books, but not anymore. Many keep track of things by taking pictures, adding notes, or calendar apps like Google Calendar
  • Ss can access apps that help them keep track of grades, view work via Google Apps, etc
  • Flipped classrooms allow for viewing content anywhere, shouldn’t phones be a part of that?
  • In the real world they will use phones and use them heavily, why not teach them how to do it responsibly? Teach digital literacy
  • They are inevitable. Why keep fighting a battle we can’t win?
  • Increased safety during drills and emergency situations
  • ESL students can use Google Translate and other apps to help learn

Anti-phone:

  • Distractions
  • Do students really use them as learning tools most of the time?
  • Constantly looking things up online doesn’t promote real learning, critical thinking, and an analytical mind

The Tools: all of these can be found on the apple app store and most on android as well

Episode 171: 6 Tools Tips and Tricks to Blast off Your School Year

Welcome to the EdTech Throwdown  This is episode 171 called “6 Tools Tips and Tricks to Blast off Your School Year”  In this episode, we’ll talk about the end of summer time crunch and 6 of our favorite edtech recommendations to help blast off your school year!  This is another episode you don’t want to miss.  Check it out.

Segment 1: Intro

Narrative:  Crunchtime and PD Days are here!

Segment 2:   6 Tools

Nick:

  • Flaticon for AI guideline markers.  Switching from noun project to flaticon.  They have way more stuff.  All my assignments this year will have different icons to indicate to the students how AI can be used on this type of assignment.
  • Using AI as a tutor.  Last night ChatGPT helped my wife learn how to reformat 7000 lines of data and then set up formulas based on that data for a work project.
  • Tables in Google Sheets:  With tables, you can simplify and accelerate spreadsheet building by bringing format and structure to unorganized ranges. By selecting your data range and going to Format > Convert to table, Sheets now does the heavy lifting to format and organize data with a polished design including column types, filters, color coding, dropdown menus and more.

15 Jun 2020A Reflective Episode on Current Events00:13:27

Welcome back to GotTechED the Podcast.  We’re going to take a break from our regular podcast schedule to address the issues regarding race and police violence in the United States. Over the last couple weeks Guise and I have taken a pause from creating content to do some reflecting on recent events.  We are sickened by the path that America has taken and the devastating loss of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many many others that, tragically, are too numerous to name.  This podcast supports all people in their fight for systemic change towards equality, justice and a better America.

Segment 1:

Nick introduces.  We hope your silence on the issues has been mistaken for inaction or lack of caring.

  1. We wanted to make sure that our message was clear and correct.
  2. We are a tech podcast, but mostly we are educators.  As educators we feel that we play a critical role in helping to shape the world and the recent racial issues are

Nick and I both have put a pause on our creation of content to make time to reflect on how we can take action in the movement to make systemic change in America.  As a podcast, we must improve and be more intentional to showcase the works of all genders, races, and backgrounds.  Through reflection and research, we have identified that it is a mistake to think that being a good person and treating others fairly is an actionable step to improve the inequalities of America.  We have identified that words and social media presence is not enough.  Since our content hiatus, we have taken some actionable steps and we challenge everyone to take some too.  Here are some actionable steps that are a part of our plan:

  1. We need to educate ourselves on our political leaders so we can vote for people who stand by principals of equality and believe that #blacklivesmatter
  2. We need to write to our government to ask them to be better and learn from reoccurring mistakes.
  3. We need to continue or start conversations with our schools about race, gender, privilege, and equality.
  4. We need to protest and show up with our voice
  5. We need to support black, small businesses owners

Edtech Throwdown

Episode 169: Edtech for Video Discussions AKA Replacers for Flip (Flipgrid)

Welcome to the EdTech Throwdown  This is episode 169 called “Edtech for Video Discussions - AKA Replacers for Flip”.  In this episode, we’ll talk about the ever popular Flip, formerly known as Flipgrid, as it is set to transition to Microsoft obscurity.  Video discussions are a valuable tool, whether you’ll have access to Flip or not and this episode will teach you about them!  This is another episode you don’t want to miss, check it out!

Segment 1:

Narrative: I recently had a teacher ask “what do you recommend we use in place of Flipgrid next year?  Flip, formerly Flipgrid is going away …kind of

Video discussions is a weird segment of edtech because it doesn’t really exist outside of Flip (flipgrid)

Replacers are tough because there really aren’t any competitors for Flip that do this exact thing.

Segment 2:

Replacer options:

  1. Padlet:  Popular interactive learning space.
  2. Detailed description:  To start posting, double-click anywhere on the board. You can then drag and drop files, paste files, or use the Save As bookmark with Padlet mini. Alternatively, click the plus icon in the lower right corner to add content. You can upload images, videos, audio files, links, or documents. Padlet can be used in many ways, from a brainstorming board to a live question bank, limited only by your imagination. You can even make it collaborative, allowing your students to expand and enhance it with their creativity. Once you're ready, hit publish to share your Padlet. It can be integrated with apps like Google Classroom and various LMS options. Additionally, Padlet can be embedded on blogs or school websites.
  3. Canva Presentations and video insert.  Tell Ss to click Upload and Record Yourself so they can insert their own video.  Use the other presentation space for comments and discussion.
  4. Whiteboards would be great for this, but in Whiteboards, when you click Upload there is not a record yourself option.
  5. Wakelet still incorporates the Flip camera - will this last … hard to say.  There is a free version of Wakelet, but you’ll likely want the paid version.
  6. Low “tech” version: Google Slides!
  7. Book Creators video option
  8. See-Saw video recording options.  Seesaw combines instructional tools, standards-aligned lessons, student portfolios, and inclusive communication features.  Some teachers use Seesaw primarily as a place for students to share their work, and specifically encourage individual reflection and peer feedback. Seesaw becomes a place not only where student work

13 Jan 2025Educational AI Hub Breakdown: finding the best00:50:58

Edtech Throwdown

Episode 181: Educational AI Hub Breakdown

Welcome to the EdTech Throwdown.  This is Episode 181 called, “Educational AI Hub Breakdown”  In this episode, we’ll compare and analyze the mega-AI hubs that are competing for every teacher's attention.  By the end, you’ll know which ones we think are actually worth your time.  This is another episode you don’t want to miss.  Check it out.

Segment 1:

Narrative:  Holy Hubs

Segment 2: AI Hubs for Teachers

What are AI Hubs?

  • We are using the term “hub” a little incorrectly here.  An AI hub is a thing in the tech space where AI models can be trained.
  • When we say hub, we mean AI platforms or workspaces that do LOTS of different teacher related things
  • Most of these use ChatGPT or something similar in the background.  For example, let’s say you wanted to write a lesson plan … you could get the same results if you just went to ChatGPT and put in a very specific prompt, but Magic School’s lesson plan generator has done that for you.
  • Also, Khanmigo uses GPT, but it has been specifically trained on the videos and resources held by Khan Academy.

What are the big ones?

Segment 1: Updates

  1. ISTE Philadelphia

Segment 2: Why or Why not Student Portfolio?

Why Use Student Portfolios vs Traditional Assessments

  • help your students feel proud of their achievements
  • provide students with an opportunity for self-reflection
  • provide a great starting point for goals setting
  • increase and improve home-school communication
  • provide information for evaluation
  • provide information for parent-teacher conferences
  • make student handover easier
  • showcase the efficacy of your school programmes
  • Decreased stress

Why do they get left behind?

  • Very subjective to grade, Ts feel uncomfortable
  • Ts fear Ss will take advantage of the freedom
  • Ts question the effectiveness of the portfolio as an assessment tool (does it really work?)

Our Top Tips

  • Set goals/expectations/the focus early.  Is this for one unit of study?  The whole year?  What specific skills will it assess?  What content will it assess?  Is it to show S progress over time or just showcase S work to parents and admin?
  • Decide how you will grade it.  Rubric?  Completion?  Provide this to the Ss from the beginning.
  • Plan for Feedback … mechanism… when and how feedback will take place
  • Consider having a another T to perform standardization checks on your grading
  • Explain to the Ss from the beginning the purpose of the portfolio.  If they know the benefits they will have more buy-in
  • Provide Ss with enough edtech resources
  • Class website subpage
  • Wakelet
  • Google Sheet List by category

Branding:

Narrative:  Kyle Wagner PD Session through the Teach Better Ambassador Program called “Simple Shifts for Student Centered Environments.

Segment 2:  Student Centered Learning vs Universal Design for Learning

Student-Centered Learning (SCL) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) are both educational approaches that aim to enhance student engagement and success, but they have different focuses and methods. Below is a comparison of their similarities and differences:

Differences:

  1. Primary Focus:

  • Student-Centered Learning: Focuses on student choice and autonomy. The goal is to empower students to take charge of their learning by making decisions about content, goals, and methods.

  1. Goal Setting

  • Universal Design for Learning: Focuses on accessibility and inclusivity. The goal is to design lessons and materials that are accessible to all students, regardless of their abilities, from the outset.

  1. Strengths and Weaknesses
  2. Approach to Curriculum:

  • SCL: In SCL, students have significant input into the curriculum. They may choose topics of interest and set personal learning goals, leading to a more personalized learning experience.
  • UDL: In UDL, the curriculum is designed with all learners in mind from the beginning. It anticipates diverse needs and provides multiple ways for students to access information, demonstrate knowledge, and stay engaged

Edtech Throwdown

Episode 168: Leveraging Social Media for Creative Classroom Projects

Welcome to the EdTech Throwdown  This is episode 168 called “Leveraging Social Media for Creative Classroom Projects”.  In this episode, we’ll talk about how social media inspired projects can put a creative and engaging spin on a variety of classroom projects.  This is another episode you don’t want to miss, check it out!

Segment 1:

Narrative: What are nick and guise’s go-to social media platforms?

Having a class social media account can be a powerful motivator and a great way for some positive PR

Just so you know, Canva can be used as the edtech for ALL of these ideas, but we tried to change it up.

Segment 2:

Project ideas:

  1. Make a meme project
  2. Example: Generate class rules using memes, learn new vocabulary, identify the novel using memes, describe a historical event (thanks NSTA blog!)
  3. Edtech:  Just look them up, there are many.  Meme Creator, Meme Generator and Quick Meme are some to check out.
  4. Gif creation
  5. Example: Create a gif that models a series of exercises for certain parts of the body. Each student gets a different muscle group or body part.
  6. Edtech: Canva animations
  7. Edtech: Lots of video editing platforms let you download the video as a gif
  8. Historical figure instagram post
  9. Example: Create an instagram post that is a series of 4 (minimum) photos of your assigned figure doing something.  One of the 4 must be a “selfie” and they must all be connected to something this person MIGHT post about, were they on Insta today.
  10. Edtech: Adobe Express - A great, free Canva alternative
  11. Mock twitter debate
  12. Example: In this project, students will participate in a mock debate as if they were on the Twitter platform (now known as X). This exercise is designed to improve writing and argumentation skills in Spanish, as well as to encourage the ability to debate respectfully in a public setting. Students will not use real Twitter but will write their posts and comments as if they were on the platform.  Debate Topic: "Should cities implement more bike lanes to encourage bicycle use?"
  13. Edtech: Create a template in Google slides that has images from real X posts with the words remove.  Students insert text boxes on top of those blank spaces.
  14. At home science tik tok video
  15. Example: Create a 1 minute to 3 minute (tiktok times) at-home science video and explain what is going on in the caption.  For example, Slime is popular right now.  Make the slime, film it, write a brief caption that explains the...
