Welcome back to Easy Email Marketing, I’m your host Yael Keon and today I’m taking a step back to look at the big picture of how email marketing fits within your overall marketing and business strategy.

 

Often we are just told we need to do email marketing and think it’s just another marketing strategy to add to the to do list but it really is so much more than that.

It’s the backbone.

The lead generation and nurturing machine.

And it’s the way you can show up and serve your customers in the best way possible.

Today I’ll dive deeper into exactly where it plays a role.

Welcome back to Easy Email Marketing, I’m your host Yael Keon and today is a bit of a fun one where we are going to combat the biggest reason why I hear people don’t send emails – they don’t know what to send. In this I’m going to guide you through a process where you can plan all your 2022 emails in about 20 minutes.

Excuse busted!

For this one I recommend you grab a pen & paper (or some post it notes) and get stuck in. If you are listening while driving or walking you can definitely still listen and either come back to revisit this episode while you do the work or just remember the process.

It's pretty simple and takes just 5 steps, outlined below, but explained in detail in the episode:

  1. Frequency of sending
  2. Key dates
  3. Themes
  4. Fill the gaps
  5. Get specific

Boom. Just like that, you’ve got a whole year of emails planned. Of course, this doesn’t mean you are stuck to this plan. I generally actually only do this for about 3 months in advance and even then some things change with the flow.

This week marks 1 year of the Easy Email Marketing podcast and is cause for celebration!

Honestly, I didn’t think I’d make it this far as I consider myself one of the least consistent people out there.

Yes, I have gotten pretty good at writing regular emails but there’s also the obligation since I am the email marketing person.

Truth be told, I avoided creating a podcast for a long time. Even though I loved listening to them and found them the best way to learn new things, get myself thinking or just distract from the day to day.

The idea of having something that needed to be out every single week freaked me out.

And it stopped me for a long time…

But one day I decided to put on my big boss pants and do something about it. And I’m so glad I did!

As I reach this 1 year milestone, I thought I would reflect on some of the things that helped me actually stay consistent.

Things that can probably be applied to all things in life that you want to do – including email.

Now while I don’t think consistency is the be all and end off of business like some profess, it’s still important to be following through on commitments to yourself.

If only to prove you can do it…

The best way to increase your email marketing sales is not just about adding more emails or more automations. Instead the secret is to increase the relevance of your emails and your offers to your subscribers.

It makes sense right? The more relevant an offer or the email content is to me, the more likely I will read it and take action on it.

The challenge of course, is how do you do this when you have a list of subscribers who fit a whole range of scenarios.

This is one of the untapped potential areas of email marketing and something that differentiates it from other marketing channels. Email gives you the ability to send some emails to some subscribers and not others. Or, even better, send different versions of those emails to different groups. In both your campaigns and your automations.

Inside this episode, I’m sharing some of the little-known extra layers that you can put within your emails or automations that take them from stock standard to standout.

You’ll learn 3 different methods of getting the data and information you need about your subscriber and then how to use this information to:

You know it. I know it. There is a lot of information out there when it comes to email marketing, list building and sales funnels. Everyone seems to be saying the same thing – which isn’t surprising considering many online entrepreneurs learnt from the same couple of people or from people who learnt from those people and so on.

 

There is an epidemic out there of misinformation which can make even the most astute business owner confused about what you “should” be doing when it comes to email marketing.

 

There are a lot of well-meaning educators and course creators out there who, yes, some of which have had significant success. But many only understand the online course creation or membership world.

They just don’t understand how to translate these strategies into real life business. Or even online businesses that are selling things other than digital products. How could they? They haven’t had the experience or education to know the difference.

 

If you provide services digitally or in person or if you sell products in a physical store or online, the way you market your business and use email marketing specifically should be different than those online educators.

And we need to understand that distinction.

 

In this episode, I’m sharing some of the most common things those online gurus teach and how it is only part of the picture.

Take this as your permission to think outside of the box of what everyone seems to be teaching and instead think about it through the lens about what you know about your industry, business and audience.

At the time this podcast episode drops, I am someone in lush Ireland - for a full month of quality family time and down time. After 3 long years of separation…

Inside this episode I’m deep-diving into MailerLite.Now back in the day, I used to just write off MailerLite as a very “basic” piece of software. I always thought that if you were going for a free option to start you’d go with MailChimp or if you could pay you’d go with something more advanced.

But over the past few years MailerLite has really improved AND after having worked on many implementations for clients and teaching it inside The Email Experience I can safely say it is one of my favourites.

You really get a lot of bang for your buck (which starts at free for up to 1000 subscribers) and it can do almost anything the more advanced software can do.

But as with anything there are pros and cons and different sorts of businesses so I’m going to break that down first and then conclude with some tips about how to get the most out of it.

It’s the dream that all the online guru’s share – create a signature program, launch it and rake in 6 figures in no time.

While I would love say that this is true, sadly it just isn’t. Not in I’d say 98% of cases.

Launching and online programs might not be the magic bullet to a multi million dollar business in a day a week.  At least not most of the time and that’s ok!

Once we take that expectation out of the picture we can instead focus on building a sustainable and realistic course or membership based business using launches.

Okay, back to goal setting! For this one I recommend, if you can, you head to your computer and open up a spreadsheet. If not, grab a pen & paper and have a go. If you are listening while driving or walking you can definitely still listen and either come back to revisit this episode while you do the work or just remember the process.

 

It's pretty simple and takes just 5 steps, outlined below, but explained in detail in the episode:

Step 1: Come up with your freedom number

Step 2: List out your current offers (and any you want to introduce) then figure out how many of each you need to sell to reach your freedom number

Step 3: Ask yourself – is this achievable given the time you have?

Step 4: Find your conversion rate

Step 5: Calculate your list size needed to reach that goal

 

Now this number may be super scary or feel doable but it is important information to know. This isn’t meant to scare you. Instead it’s meant to empower you.

Welcome back to Easy Email Marketing, I’m your host Yael Keon and today I’m answering one of the most frequently asked questions I get which is “how often should I be sending emails?”

 

I get it. It's a fine balance between wanting to show up consistently for your subscribers but not wanting to “annoy” them, wanting to get more sales but not wanting to be just salesy, and wanting to grow your business in less time but trying to find the time to write emails.

 

With many factors this is why it’s an “it depends” answer.

 

In this episode, I’m going to discuss a few considerations that could influence your email schedule.

 

Consideration #1: How often you are producing core content

Consideration #2: How often you are promoting

Consideration #3: How many automations you have

Consideration #4: How often you are emailing now

 

Is there such a thing as too much?

Yes and no. I believe you can be emailing as much as your audience wants to hear from you.

But it should be done with tact and respect.

 

This means if you want to increase your frequency, look at segmenting your list to see who is interested in receiving what. And give them options to opt out.

So for example, Podcast + content funnel or podcast + updates. Then I also have weekly emails going to EE members.

One trick I use is to send different things on different days:

  • Monday is podcast
  • Tuesday is EE
  • Wednesday is content funnel
  • Thurs or Fri is other updates

That way if by some chance someone is on all lists they aren’t getting multiples a day.

But that’s me – an email expert using email to support my subscribers in different ways. I’m at the extreme end. For you, it’s just starting where you are now.

If I were to boil it down to one recommendation it would be this…

Minimum monthly but probably more than you are doing now.

Already I’m seeing so much content online about how it’s the last 90 days or only 90 days left.

It’s like there is this attitude that we are short of time and we either have to go all in or just wait until next year.

But here’s the thing – it is still a whole spacious 3 months. 3 months.

Don’t buy into this time scarcity, rush energy. You can choose how you perceive it.

And we can also choose any day, any week, any month to start on something that we have said is a priority.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you will have heard something about Google and Yahoo’s Email Authentication Changes which came into effect this month (Feb 2024).

This has sent the internet in a frenzy with people going into panic over what needs to happen. And some creators really haven’t helped with this.

Well first I’m here to reassure you that if you haven’t got it sorted out yet that you are not going to get put into Google or Yahoo spam jail yet.

But it is important so I’m going to step you through a few key things you need to have in place. I cover:

  • What Google and Yahoos requirements actually are
  • How to add the one-click unsubscribe
  • How to keep your spam rate below their threshold of 0.10%
  • What SPF, DKIM and DMARC mean and how to add them
  • Email Tool Testers latest deliverability test results on the most popular email marketing software providers

This is an important episode but my hope is to take away the fear about this overwhelming topic and show you it doesn’t need to be that hard. It may only take you 10 minutes to sort out.

Welcome back to Easy Email Marketing, I’m your host Yael Keon and today we are talking about that inner voice that can often stop you from actually sending those emails.

 

If you are listening to this when the episode is released – we are right at the beginning of 2022 and often I find this is when everyone is super eager with their business planning and saying “this year I will focus on email marketing”.

Welcome back to Easy Email Marketing. 

Everyone says to “segment your audience” and to “add tags”.

Okay thanks – but WTF does that actually mean?

Email marketing is full of industry terminology which can be very confusing.

And this isn’t helped by the fact that different email marketing software uses different terminology for the exact same thing.

So in this episode I’m going to try to explain so that you can actually leverage these powerful audience tools effectively and without too much overlap.

For the purposes of this post, I’m going to stick to more standard definitions and then I’ll explain a few variances from different email software throughout

The most important thing to understand about lists, segments and tags is that they are a hierarchy. So, it goe lists at the top, segments in the middle, and tags at the bottom.

I know that there are many of you out there who struggle with emailing your subscribers regularly. This episode is here to help you break that struggle, and make email marketing a habit.

 

Now I’ll be honest… consistency is not my forte.

I am not someone who can just put something in my schedule to happen on a certain day and trust myself to always follow through with it.

To me there is always the next day or the next week.

So this is definitely not coming from the place of someone who is completely organised and has it all together. Instead, I’m sharing 10 tips that help me, and will hopefully help you to break down that barrier and get in the habit of sending those emails!

 

  1. Have a go to list of ideas
  2. Go for a walk (or drive)
  3. Pair with another piece of content
  4. Prioritise
  5. Commit to a day of the week/month
  6. Make it realistic
  7. Leverage scheduling & automation
  8. Habit stack
  9. Create a nice environment/make it nice
  10. Remove the pressure

I also want to be able to go on long walks, have Netflix binges and hit the gym.

I LOVE what I do but I only want it to take up as much of my life as I want it to.

And that is what Free to Thrive is all about. Helping you grow a thriving business in less than 20 hours a week without sacrificing your profits. My zone of genius is seeing the most efficient way to do this. The best way to create leveraged offers. The easiest way to market. Without burnout.

So it gets delayed. And delayed again.

But not anymore, I have an amazing guest joining us on the pod to help you start creating more time in your business (and your life).They call her The Time Creator. It’s Tash Guthrie is a time management & productivity educator, and the founder of The Time Creator planner, podcast, community and membership.

She believes that everyone has the power within them to live the life they truly desire, free of overwhelm, burden and stress.
