One of the most important parts of reasoning well involves understanding how to change your beliefs in response to new information. Unfortunately, this is something almost none of us does well without training. In this workshop, Anna will walk you through the odds formulation of Bayes’ Theorem in order to identify the three independent components we need to update properly. Since Bayesian updating on the fly can be hard, you’ll practice implementing a bundle of trigger-action plans that studies have shown to be successful in helping people respond more accurately to new evidence.

A key concern of the effective altruism community is the risk that highly engaged community members lose interest in EA (value drift). This might be especially true for those who don’t work for EA-aligned organizations. EA workplace and professional groups might be a potential countermeasure. Promising paths for impact may be strategies to attract and retain highly engaged community members and to offer support for EA allies to continuously transition towards a high impact career. The panel will discuss key uncertainties, paths to impact and some early signs of success focusing on the examples of the EA finance and consulting networks.

Humanity’s survival is at increasing risk of a global catastrophic nuclear event because the dominant strategy for preventing the use of nuclear weapons has not adapted to today’s threats. This talk with Joan Rohlfing and Carl Robichaud explores pathways to a better, safer nuclear future, one where humanity’s existence and flourishing no longer hangs in the balance, and one that relies on an effective system for managing nuclear technology into the long future – a new nuclear paradigm -- that can’t cause a civilizational catastrophe if it fails.  Finally, it makes the case for why the EA community should prioritize reducing global catastrophic nuclear risks and describes how it can contribute to safeguarding the long-term future.

Addressing aquatic animal welfare is important, as it is highly neglected, and tractable. Estimates vary, but there are approximately 100 billion fin fish and 350-400 billion shrimps farmed annually, which is far more than all of the land animals combined (more than 7x as many at the upper estimation). For the most part, farmed aquatic animals are treated like inanimate objects - their suffering is almost unimaginable.

This session covers why aquatic animal welfare is critical to address, and some of the priority interventions that can alleviate vast amounts of suffering.

Ajeya Cotra is a Senior Research Analyst at Open Philanthropy. She’s currently thinking about how difficult it may be to ensure AI systems pursue the right goals. Previously, she worked on a framework for estimating when transformative AI may be developed, as well as various cause prioritization and worldview diversification projects. She joined Open Philanthropy in July 2016 as a Research Analyst. Ajeya received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley, where she co-founded the Effective Altruists of Berkeley student group and taught a course on effective altruism.

Danny discusses the three exponentials driving AI progress: hardware, algorithmic, and spending. We'll consider extrapolating these trends 10–20 years out. We'll translate effective compute progress into GPT-2 to GPT-3 sized jumps and build an intuition for such jumps. We'll use the extrapolations and jump intuition to think about what capabilities normal progress in effective compute are likely to yield. Mushfiq Mobarak and Heidi McAnnally-Linz speak to learning from cutting edge research on the science of scaling using examples from scaling interventions targeted at addressing seasonal poverty and from the NORM model targeted at increasing community-level mask wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic. They will draw on these experiences to make the case for innovation through research as well as working with existing at-scale partners. They will emphasize the importance of using direct evidence from RCTs as well as exploring other complexities of scale such as national impacts, spillovers, etc.

Climate change has long been a difficult problem to approach from an EA perspective. It is far from neglected as a cause area, and yet it is far from solved. It has certain long-term impacts, but their gravity and knock-on implications are fundamentally challenging to quantify. It’s a scientific, political, social, technological problem, woven into every aspect of our way of life, that requires serious effort to address if we are to protect those yet to be born.

Significant progress has been made on food security issues globally over the previous decades. However, significant risks remain, particularly in the form of under analysed tail risks that could reduce food output by between 10-90% globally, placing billions at risk of starvation. The threat here presents an opportunity for EA aligned researchers and funding to make a real difference, and in this talk Michael Hinge lays out some of the research recently completed concerning the most severe food catastrophic risks, what remains to be done and how people can get involved.

In this talk, Joshua Monrad (Future of Humanity Institute) will discuss this question. Borrowing Holden Karnofsky’s analogy of “rowing and steering,” the talk will present arguments in favour of ‘steering’ more than we currently are. "You've probably heard that Elon Musk, Stuart Russell, and Stephen Hawking warn of dangers posed by AI. What are these risks, and what basis do they have in AI practice? Rohin Shah will first describe the more philosophical argument that suggests that a superintelligent AI system pursuing the wrong goal would lead to an existential catastrophe. Then, he'll ground this argument in current AI practice, arguing that it is plausible both that we build superintelligent AI in the coming decades, and that such a system would pursue an incorrect goal.

They’re largely personal, but these choices have an ethical component as well; you value certain principles and ends over others. Joshua Greene discusses two psychological research projects aimed at broadening the scope of human altruism and cooperation. The first (with Lucius Caviola) aims to expand the circle of effective giving. They show that ordinary donors are happy to give effectively, provided that it is part of a bundled donation including a personal favorite charity. They explain the appeal of bundled donations and show that economic incentives can boost their appeal. This research led them to create GivingMultiplier.org, which incentives bundled donations using a self-sustaining system of micro-matching. Since launching in late 2020, Giving Multiplier has raised over 1.6 million USD, mostly from donors who are new to effective giving. The second project (with Evan Defilippis) aims to reduce political animosity using a scalable online quiz game (“RedBrain BlueBrain”). Republicans and Democrats play as partners and succeed by reaching mutually rewarding compromises. Two large-scale, preregistered experiments showed that an hour of game play can produce warmer attitudes toward the political out-group, with effects lasting up to four months. These two projects address different problems, but they are grounded in the same empirically informed conception of human nature: people are reciprocal cooperators, driven by emotions that limit their scope of moral concern. However, people are capable of moral expansion through rationally structured opportunities and experiences.

In this talk, Joel briefly introduces the Happier Lives Institute and explains their recent research comparing the cost-effectiveness of cash transfers to psychotherapy using subjective wellbeing. He finds that psychotherapy is nine times more cost-effective than cash transfers after adjusting for household spillovers. The analysis shows that subjective wellbeing offers a coherent framework for measuring the wellbeing impact of interventions from the micro (charity) to the macro (policy) scale.

Good Food Institute founder and CEO Bruce Friedrich explains GFI’s thesis that our industrial meat production system is a threat to humanity that is even more dangerous than fossil fuel production, with serious jeopardy to humanity across climate change, biodiversity loss, food security, antibiotic resistance, pandemic risk, and more. All forecasts by agricultural economists indicate that meat consumption is going to rise inexorably, by between 70 and more than 100 percent by 2050. We are not going to convince consumers to change their diets, much like we are not going to convince the world to consume less energy or drive less. So, we need to remake meat.

This is Victoria's high-level view of the AI alignment research landscape and the ingredients needed for aligning advanced AI. Most people agree that happiness matters, even if they value other things too. Thanks to the growing field of subjective wellbeing research, it is now possible to work out the best ways to make people happier in a scientifically rigorous way. But such work has only just begun - it is new both to effective altruism and to policymaking more generally. Barry shows how our intuitions about what will make us happy are often wrong and that decades of economic growth have done little to improve average wellbeing. He then describes the pioneering research the Happier Lives Institute has done to compare the cost-effectiveness of different interventions in terms of subjective wellbeing. This has led to the surprising finding that treating depression in low-income countries is 9x more cost-effective than providing direct cash transfers.
